#2103 - Ceraon vitta
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One more from the top of Mt. Ainsley, where like so many of the other insects I saw, was making a meal of the Acacias.
Originally described as Centrotus vitta in 1851, from a badly damaged holotype from an unknown location. 5 years latter the same entomologist described it as Oxyrhachus contorta, and a bit latter on in 1907 another entomologst named it Zanophara albovittata in the Bulletin of the Hawaiian Sugar Planters' Association Experimental Station Entomological Series 3.
Ceraon was a demigod responsible for the mixing of wine in Greek myth, but I have no idea if that was relevent when they named the genus.
A Membracid from the wetter parts of SE Australia and Tasmania, where it's usually found on Acacia. Reasonably common.
Mt. Ainsley, ACT

Australian common garden katydid, Caedicia simplex, Tettigoniidae
Although normally green, erythrism (a condition causing excessive production of red pigments) is not incredibly uncommon in this species or in grasshoppers and katydids in general.

Major shelf shuffle! I decided to swap the long standing Dino Zone with my Australian animal collection, giving them more space to spread out, and changed a lot of displays on this half of the room.
Really happy to see the Aussie animals more on display, and it's nice to have them right under the thylacine shelves! It's funny how the Tassie devil corner is just a dark shadowy place too lol. Synapsid space is down below them! You may spot that one dinosaur managed to stay on this shelf, because she is Australian too.

Since I also decided to get rid of my fish tank (don't worry, all fish had lived full lives and it was vacant for a while) I had more free space to the left side too. So I decided to move the little set of drawers up there (full of bones and such...) and make a nice skully naturey display on top. Not much of a theme to the animal figures in front, just a few I like!
Tumblr media
And off to the left of that, Pawface is getting to hang out by my galaxy projector light and some tiny drawers of rocks and trinkets. Ink (the black, one eyed creature) is out to play for the first time in a while too!
Tumblr media
The dinosaurs and other prehistoric guys are doing fine and only a few needed to be put away! They've got the two lower left shelves, and the lowest shelf even has a bit of a rainbow going on.

Hi! I was wondering, have you posted about the Saunders’ Case Moth yet? I just think it’s a cool-looking moth.
Moth Of The Day #246
Saunders' Case Moth / Large Bagworm
Metura elongatus
From the psychidae family. The males have a wingspan of 30 mm, the females do not have wings and remain in the larval case. They can be found in the eastern half of Australia.

#2157 - Subf. Podopinae, Tribe Deroploini - Turtle Bugs
Tumblr media
The Turtle Bugs might not be the biggest subfamily of the Pentatomidae, but they have their charm. Assuming they're actualy monophyletic - there's some evidence the subfamily needs to be split up. The adults usually have highly domed backs, hence the common hame. Most species suck plant juices - some kind of eucalyptus in this case, at a wetland constructed over the site of Wagga Wagga's former sewerage works.

thought I would share some of the incredible amphibian diversity we see in our garden. all of these creatures are from the same genus of treefrogs, Litoria (excepting Green Tree frogs, which are also often described as genus Ranoidea).
Tumblr media
a Broad-palmed Rocket Frog (Litoria latopalmata), who we have spotted in the bog cave the past few nights! this species has proven to be highly variable in colour and patterning, so always interesting to encounter.
Tumblr media
the pebble-shaped Desert Tree Frog (Litoria rubella), who hunt insects on my car in multitudes.
Tumblr media
one of my favourites, the Peron's Laughing Tree Frog (Litoria peronii). at a distance they appear a uniform beige, but a closer look reveals flecks of emerald green across textured skin. this species tends to be a bit larger than the other frogs, but is still dwarfed by the Green Tree Frog.
Tumblr media
a Slender Bleating Tree Frog (Litoria balatus), who I have posted before. one of the smallest of the frogs we see, but nonetheless intriguing with their yellow toes, and vibrant red eye.
Tumblr media
last, and largest, is the conspicuous Green Tree Frog (Litoria/Ranoidea caerulea), a species found across much of the continent, and frequently found around human dwellings.
that's 5 species of tree frog all found within our relatively small garden, which is pretty amazing. we've also recently encountered a pair of Striped Marsh Frogs (Lymnodynastes sp.) around the pond (hopefully I can get a good photo soon), and of course there are the ever-present Cane Toads (Rhinella marina).
