Watchers - Evo, ATUS and Fandom
It's very common to see people blame ATUS for the way the fandom sees the watchers now but... How much did it actually come from there?
Wings (and statues):
Although the depiction of Watchers specifically having wings does exist in ATUS it's very clearly originated from Evo itself as Grian was once left a statue of what Grian called at the time "an angel lady" who had wings Grian was tasked with burning down (they represented his greed)
Tumblr media
You can see the EVO symbol in glass above the statue.
Even though the statue isn't exactly stated as representing a Watcher it's not really stretch, specially since the statue appears to have a obsidian staff, the same obsidian the Watchers used to cover Grian's chests.
Puzzles and riddles
Evo originated. All it's presence in ATUS comes directly from Evo. The only change might be the inclusion of stained glass windows depicting Watchers. Although I wouldn't jump to conclusions if someone right now decided to draw Watcher Grian stained glass art as it's a very common trope in general with God-like beings. Very much brought by Catholic representations if angels, saints, Jesus and the likes.
Masks
This one is one I can safely say, if you see fanart like this with a mask that isn't see through with the Evo symbol it almost certainly came from ATUS. Variants with a blindfold instead of mask might be inspired by this too. Even if the artist isn't exactly aware.
Eyes
Very nuanced topic. For startersthe name Watchers automatically inspires the idea of eyes. Of being watched too. But there's more options.
Evo never explicitly represents the Watchers with eyes.
ATUS does it a little bit. At one time when one of the masks is taken from a Watcher (that isn't Grian) they're face is shown to have a lot of eyes. However this isn't the full "wings and whole body are full of wings". Not even "Void with eyes" you now see a lot too in fandom.
I have multiple theories. The most obvious is Biblical accurate angels. Lots of wings, circles, eyes in the whole body, these are almost certainly angel originated.
Now the idea of being able to watch everything could've come from a lot of places. Even some Magnus Archives influence can be here (even if some minimal)
I will say the Watcher in ATUS are a bit disappointing in the "all seeing" department. They can sense some things but they aren't that powerful or at least scary with that.
Controlling worlds
Evo originated as the Watchers gave clues to the players so they find portals to the next updates + the puzzles + gifts and punishments. They were very much in control
Purple
Evo. From the literal Minecraft portals to the Evo icon it was very much present the whole time.
Tumblr media
Powers
ATUS makes use of some powers like telekinesis and the like. There is even some mention to being able to use blocks that aren't allowed/present.
The telekinesis part is very much an ATUS thing even though again - if someone is going to give powers the ability to magically move objects would be the first choice.
The part of bloks that aren't accessable to a normal player are more nuanced. In Evo the Watcher did build structures with obsidian and bedrock which are either extremely tasking to get or impossible so the grounds for that are very much there.
The ability to show up in dreams is present in ATUS but considering Taurtis' lore in Evo I'm not surprised it was inspired by that. It's not the same as the Watchers never appeared in Taurtis' dreams but Taurtis did miss going through the portal because he was sleeping and woke up to seeing everything purple with a portal animationor even more likely: the ATUS part came from the angels showing in people's dreams in the bible so again - might be in ATUS but it doesn't mean the people who write / draw stuff with it took it from there.
The Watchers destroyed Evo
Surprisingly, Evo based. As someone reminded me well, after Grian left the Watchers threw a meteor at the Property Police I believe. This leads to
Watchers are Evil
Depends of who you watch. Grian's playthings gives room for doubt. They give gifts and punish. They seem neutral at least. You could argue though that a lot of Grian's punishments were deserved. They were because Grian basically liked to prak and blow up other people's stuff.
They can be about platful as I saw someone describe them once.
Also the modification of the end poem, the one that reveals Grian turns into a Watcher himself, is quite fond.
Martyn and Jimmy on the other hand play the Watchers as more evil even in Evo. As they are more connected with the Listeners and the Listeners oppose the Watchers.
In ATUS they are shown as feigning compassion and being very manipulative.
But if you follow Last Life canon they are also shown as manipulators.
+ In Grian's lore specifically they are canonically a representation of the viwers (you and me) but this has seemed to change in Jimmy and Martyn's lore.
So I'd say ATUS made popular the "Grian was taken by the Watchers and they were awful" but the truth is that there was some ground to that already.
Watchers came from the void
Not specific stated in either Evo or ATUS actually. I don't think we ever really know where the Watchers exist in Evo but in ATUS they are from (a special kind of) the End... But there's also a logical reason for it.
Elytras and all the obsidian. And in Evo Grian got turned into a Watcher after he fought the ender dragon and used the end portal.
The idea of the void most likely comes from the void that surrounds the End.
Watchers are eldritch abominations:
Well, the Watchers in Evo don't have a canon physical appearance and in ATUS they are quite tame. A bit taller than maybe the average human, have wings, use robes... But nothing too monstrous. They use staffs and magic weapons to fight.
The idea if cryptic abomination comes from somewhere else. Probably a mixture of Biblical accurate angels and maybe some other pop culture monsters.
Bird features
100% neither Evo nor ATUS. Recent development that came from the wings and Grian's association with birds in Hermitcraft.
Grian's Watcher name is Xelqua
Surprisingly not ATUS! And not Evo either! The name is from Grian's old YouTube name but I don't know where the idea was first introduced. It wasn't in ATUS though.
Conclusion:
Except maybe the masks almost all stuff, even if more elaborated in ATUS, all the stuff as either came from Evo itself or even been inspired from something else (most likely biblical accurate angels). In fact I believe the stiff in ATUS mostly came from biical accurate angels too or just normal angels (long robes, stained glass windows)
So I think accusing all fandom depictions of the Watchers as all coming from ATUS is very silly. ATUS might have popularised the appearance of Watchers in Hermitcraft and in a way to have some Grian angst but it definitely isn't all there is to Watcher depictions. Besides that other fics have come and did things differently.
For exemple I have already read two fivs where Grian (a watcher) is a monster in the boaten hole. Yes. The idea he was like transformed into whatever he is by the Watchers might be very loosely be based on ATUS (although Watcher Grian in ATUS was never an eldritch being. He was just like a person with wings and a mask and he was still himself and capable of communicating) which in turn came from Evo but it's already very far removed from it.
Fandom changes. You might want people to watch Evo to take their own conclusions and you might ask for more variety but saying ATUS is the sole responsible for the state of fanon Watcher Grian is just false.

Okay OC stuff under the cut (KingTumu, possession stuff)
There is a period in the KingTumu timeline where King gets possessed by an evil spirit who draws energy from suffering and it's kind of a heartbreaking thing bc Atumu doesn't realize it's not his Master, so he just thinks that King is being really violent and cruel for no reason (or maybe Atumu did something wrong? Or this is the new norm?)
It starts as like really small random things. Only 5-15 minutes at a time. Maybe once a day or something. Moments of uncharacteristic violence and cruelty. And it's never explained, so Atumu never really figures out what's going on. He just figures maybe...idk this is a thing now.
Whenever King is back to his normal self, he'd ask Atumu what was wrong (Atumu would flinch from his touch bc he wouldn't know if King would hurt him or not) but Atumu would have nothing to say. He didn't know if anything was wrong. Nothing was wrong?
Ofc this was worrisome for King bc all he could see from his perspective was that Atumu seemed more reticent for some reason, but he had no idea why
Eventually King finds Atumu injured and Atumu won't tell him how he got injured. He's increasingly worried and concerned for Atumu, wondering why Atumu is hiding something from him. What is he hiding and why? King doesn't push Atumu though bc Atumu must have a reason for not telling him...but he's worried. But it only gets worse
As the spirit gets stronger, it is more active and increasingly violent. Also manifests more. More often, for longer periods, and this takes a toll on King's body as well. King finds himself vomiting black gook whenever he comes back to. He never had memory of the possessions, but his body feels the weariness.
One day King wakes up from a blackout to find Atumu basically in a pool of his own blood, bleeding out from multiple festering stab wounds, one hand pinned to the ground by a dagger through the back of the hand. This is it. This is the limit. He has to know what happened to Atumu and why Atumu is keeping information from him. Who did this? Did someone attack them?
Atumu finally admits that it was King himself, which King finds really hard to believe, but there is no one else out there in the desert besides them.
Atumu of course never blames King - he thinks he must have done something to deserve this.
King is afraid of hurting Atumu so he seeks to resolve this. He needs to leave Atumu and stay far away until he gets this solved. He leaves Atumu, and it sadly gets worse for Atumu.
King goes on a mission to find a shaman, alone. Atumu doesn't know when King will return. If King will return? If this is a continued punishment for something he did wrong? He's not sure.
Atumu doesn't move from their tent that they had set up. He doesn't have much in terms of supplies (they usually get supplies when they travel and go into towns/from natural features) But not moving, Atumu doesn't have much for food and water. He also doesn't dare move from the tent lest King return and he not be there. Weeks go by in King's mission and Atumu wastes away in the tent, not knowing if or when King will ever return
Eventually King does find a shaman, who convinces him that it is indeed Atumu who is the one possessed and they must exorcise the spirit. I think the spirit had actually left by then bc I don't recall any other mention of it henceforth. Perhaps it was the weeks away from any interaction with any other being. Perhaps it was sated by that last violent attack? Anyhow the shaman has these complex rituals they need to gather supplies for, and the supplies can be hard to come by
The two of them eventually do make it back to the tent where King finds Atumu in such a bad state, but the Shaman does not want King to nurse him back to health, as the Shaman believes the spirit resides within Atumu, and Atumu's body in its weakened state also weakens the spirit. They want his body as close to death as possible to rid the spirit for good. It hurts King to see Atumu like this but he follows the Shaman's orders
This is a sad sad period for Atumu bc he has no idea what's going on at all. He doesn't know what he did or why any of this is happening. Honestly he just longs for King's company, as much as he longs for food or water. Or more.
King does break and give him just a touch of honey from his fingertip to give him strength and Atumu begs him not to leave
But there are more ingredients to gather for the ritual so leave again King must. The Shaman admonishes King for giving into the evil spirit's temptations (giving Atumu water and honey)
I don't think this episode ever gets a nice conclusion. There really was no conclusion to be had bc there was never an evil spirit within Atumu in the first place and the one in King seemed to have left of its own accord, maybe after the really really horrible last taxing possession.
This is the only time I can think of that Atumu ever begs King, and it's heartbreaking to King that he has to do this as well. He doesn't want to leave Atumu and he doesn't want to starve and dehydrate Atumu, but he is trying to follow the Shaman's orders bc he wants to be rid of the spirit. It's also a really hard time for King because Atumu is the only living being he really truly cares about more than anything, and he is responsible for Atumu's life, as his Master.
King does have a lot of internal turmoil about keeping Atumu in general. A lot of times, he fears that being with him exposes Atumu to more dangers than if they had never met. It feels selfish of him to endanger Atumu's life like this. Just being with King is a risk. Atumu passes more as human, and King draws unwanted attention and violence from humans. And when they are with supernatural creatures, Atumu is also at increased risk because of his humanness. But Atumu wants nothing more than to be with King
-
It escalates pretty bad once the spirit starts needing more and develops a taste for blood - it was the final possession which left Atumu as a used pile of bloody flesh.
Also after every possession beforehand, King would care for Atumu's wounds and Atumu would be trembling from gratitude and feel undeserving of King's kindness towards him bc he still thought he'd done something wrong to merit the abuse in the first place. Like he did something wrong and was punished for it? And then King helps to patch him up afterwards? He felt so apologetic and grateful for King's kindness. But he didn't know what he did wrong so he couldn't take steps to not repeat it. And the same thing would happen over and over, getting worse and worse
At some point, I think Atumu normalizes it in his head as maybe this is a kink thing? He's unsure. Bc the spirit clearly gained pleasure from causing pain, and Atumu doesn't realise the spirit is not King. He just finds King acting uncharacteristic. The spirit is clearly sadistic and gaining pleasure, and if doing this to Atumu is something pleasurable to King, Atumu wants to abide best he can.
It's also bc of this that the spirit needs to push harder because it is clearly not causing as much suffering as it wants. If Atumu is permitting this - not fighting back - it satisfies less of the need.
The thing that Atumu has a hard time understanding in all of this is King's confusion, asking him what is going on, what Atumu is hiding from him. Is this also part of the game? Why would his Master do this and half an hour later ask him what happened? He's not even sure what happened. He's not sure what is happening. Why is this happening? Is it a punishment? Is it a kink thing? He doesn't know. So he keeps quiet. He doesn't want to say the wrong thing and trigger another violent attack.
But also it's really really really out of the blue when these possessions happen. So they can just be like...they are walking around in the desert quietly as they always do, and King just turns around and backhands Atumu's face or slams him into the ground. It's so out of the blue that it's bewildering and he doesn't know what to make of it
The first possessions were like that. Just random outbursts of violence lasting only a few seconds or minutes at most. And then King would be confused, a little dazed, and surprised. He'd help Atumu back up or patch him up. And it'd be like this, but the violence would escalate. The violence would last longer. And the outbursts would be more frequent.
Anyhow during that whole time, the worst thing for Atumu was the period when King was gone. He would rather King's erratic violence and care afterwards than King's absence.
-
What also makes me think of this moment is when Atumu dies (oh spoiler alert I guess) and finally comes back hundreds of years later and King is in tears and says "I killed you!" And Atumu says "That cannot be true. I know you would never cause me harm, and here I am before you, alive and well." And King just responds, sobbing "it was an accident " Like he's begging the universe for forgiveness.
Knowing what Atumu has experienced, Atumu is still able to confidently say that King would never hurt him.

Re: your winged!Grian origin post
I joined the HC fandom circa early s7, and I just want to say that I think we as a fandom are sort of retroactively putting importance onto the whole bird symbolism. Yes, it's important and does make some sense, but back then it definitely felt like probably 80% of winged Grians were Watcher Grian (inspired by ATUS) and parrot or chicken or any other wing was the outlier. I understand not wanting to place too much importance on any one particular fic, but it's hard to overstate just how much ATUS was THE watcher fic. No one except the most niche fans had watched Evo, but suddenly this was The One Thing About Grian (the most popular hermit) so everyone in the fandom had to read that to understand any fanworks, basically. And a huge amount of Watcher knowledge that became fanon, especially back then, was extrapolated from ATUS, full stop.
TLDR. yes it's good not to raise one fic on a pedestal but I also think we shouldn't be trying to erase ATUS influence after the fact. Feels like a weird attempt to change history
(Also I swear this isn't ATUS propaganda I only read it the once. I just legitimately think it's an important part of hermit history and am trying to help, so sorry if this comes off mean or anything!)
so, disclaimer, i wasn't there in the fandom at the time, but my own like, editorialized thoughts on this, as opposed to informative (which means my own opinions are in here and you may not agree with them, this isn't meant to be a factual accounting of fandom history anymore):
i don't think you're entirely wrong, which is why i went out of my way to include it; at least on tumblr, i think that fic probably had an outsized influence on how people write watchers and the winged grian stuff. as someone who wasn't around, the main way i know that is "people still discourse about it", "specific design elements that weren't super present in canon (or present at all in hermitcraft canon) are really present in fanworks", and "i know full well that, while people claim cleo said she read atus, she only said that she read a fic where grian had wings and something about how he was sad a lot if i remember right, and the fact that people extrapolated that to mean atus says some pretty strong things to me". like, all of these things together is why i think atus clearly had a lot of influence here.
that being said, i do have people in my comments like "oh yeah i realized he liked flying so i drew him with an elytra a lot, and then i saw people adding feathers so i started doing that". that seems especially common with people who were, say, on the reddit at the time - they didn't have the fandom context that was causing it on tumblr, so they either A) originated giving him wings on their own or B) picked it up from other artists and made assumptions about where it came from.
the thing is that while atus clearly had a huge influence on the older fandom... i bet, show of hands, most of the newer fandom members who joined late season 7 and beyond? have not actually read atus. or, if they have, that isn't their main influence for the winged grian art - other winged grian art is. that's how stuff like this ends up spreading in the fandom. hell, that's what we're seeing with things like xb's fish properties - one or two people who were big in the fandom liked it, and other artists picked it up from them, and it wouldn't surprise me if it really does become a ubiquitous character trait of his that people are baffled by at this rate. the hermitcraft fandom does that a lot.
that newer grian artists don't have that fandom context so they are drawing him with wings because they know he is meant to have them, and are making up the reason they think he should have them. atus has, at this point, been mostly removed from the wings equation. the watcher thing hasn't - he's never losing that association - but specifically atus's influence isn't really a major factor so much anymore. besides, as i said: i see him with parrot wings far more often than i see him with purple ones these days, and it's a little silly to say that that's not because of season 7, when it absolutely is.
all of this is to say that when it comes to the wing stuff atus is absolutely important which is why i included it but i sort of get the sense grian would have ended up with wings even without atus, if only because of the parrot stuff in season 7 when combined with the fandom's specific love of non-humaning people.
as for the watcher stuff... so here's the thing. i think fanon watcher stuff is absolutely heavily influenced by atus and it wouldn't be an inescapable part of grian's character without it, if only because evo just is not that popular compared to hermitcraft and people wouldn't be dragging all the evo stuff up in the specific way hermitcraft fans do if atus hadn't happened. so many of the watcher tropes people use originate clearly from that fic.
and like. okay. i agree with people when they say a lot of those tropes would have cropped up around watchers anyway. i know the "the watchers are evil" thing is a massively debated plot point but it's such low-hanging fruit people would have grabbed it. i have seen the watcher statues, people would have grabbed the angel imagery. people would have grabbed the purple. it's more the specific confluence of ideas that seems to have originated with atus, and more specifically, the popularity of doing watcher stuff in the first place.
once again, to be clear: the watcher stuff has undergone a LOT of fandom mutation. i think most new fans hear about it and don't know about atus, and even maybe watch evo themselves, which is neat. but evo... is not as big as hermitcraft! evo is an old series! and like. yhs or even vault hunters don't get as integrated into the characters as evo does, and that's almost certainly because it blew up at one point. and while i think most current watcher people do their own thing, i think it would be disingenuous to say that atus didn't have an influence on the fact that the fandom does not let go of the watcher thing for grian, just like trying to claim that the superhero fic trend in dsmp didn't come from tommy's unbeatable method. like, yes, the people doing it now aren't necessarily doing it because of that fic, or using the tropes because of that fic; they've picked them up themselves. at the same time, it's hard to say the popularity didn't start there.
i also know it sucks to say that, since a lot of people have some shitty memories related to atus, which i won't comment on because i was really not there for that discourse and i don't want to put words in people's mouths. it also sucks because people hear that and think people are saying they aren't being original/they're making things up, or that it's bad that they do the watcher things, and they want to defend it. i get that. like i said, a lot of the tropes that we attribute to atus probably would have been associated with watcher stuff anyway. its just that watcher!grian would have been a lot more niche without it, i think.
(with the possible exception of if martyn had still done his thing at the end of last life; we have no way to know how much he was influenced by fanon or not on that, given that he and grian were the actual writers for evo lore and all that. that's a different can of worms though we're talking about hermitcraft here.)
this also comes from me as an outsider, someone who really only entered the hermitcraft fandom early season 8, and only started watching mid season 7 (after the turf war, even). this is my observation of the trends as i've seen them. it probably feels different when you're an insider, as well, and were there at the time this stuff came about. and i admit some of this comes from being someone who joined the fandom late and has had trouble picking up the why for the watcher stuff. i get it with the "grian has wings", that's constantly reaffirmed as a headcanon, but a lot of the weird specifics of watcher tropes continue to baffle me as someone who isn't really interested in watching evo and mostly just wants to do hermitcraft stuff. (i use the watcher stuff sometimes as it suits me, as i do with basically all the fanon. i'm mostly neutral to it i actually have stronger opinions about hels stuff than i do watcher stuff when it comes to 'things that are largely fanon', lol.)
anyway atus is also fascinating to me because it's like. reading it now it's like, okay? it isn't bad, i'm not saying that, but it's also not a masterpiece, and it very heavily reads to me as "this fic got lucky to be in the right place at the right time to have the influence it had, by being the first to do a trope other people would latch onto later", and i think that kind of way fics work is interesting as someone who writes fics myself. (for the record, that's kind of how i consider black box too - it's fine, it does what i wanted it to do, but also it is as popular as it is because it happened to be in the right place at the right time and was the first decently-written thing to do a trope other people would latch onto later.) i can see why people would be annoyed to have the stuff they do that they consider unrelated to it constantly attributed to it, especially given the amount that it's just become established fanon by now that people don't have to know any of the original context to be able to use.
uhhh that was long the tl;dr is that the wing stuff almost certainly would have happened eventually anyway from what i can tell and a lot of the tropes we use for watchers probably would have also shown up anyway, but it's also silly to pretend that atus isn't a huge part of why it's as popular of a set of tropes as it is, because it is a part of that. that doesn't make any of the tropes bad or unoriginal though and i think people should keep doing them they're cool

An Exploration of Various Dimensions
a comic of Grian remembering a few things.
(Based on the April Fools snapshot that was released in Minecraft back at the start of the month. some ramblings below the cut.)
heyo! i spent like 3 weeks on this and there were more panels planned but i went “scratch that, we’re posting this”. i also found a way to put the long image ids in the alt text of each pic
I’d hardly call this an AU since I just used Grian as an excuse to draw the dimensions hahahaskfdj. honestly, I was going to make this an AU of an already existing AU (and technically, it can still be! with headcanons! asdfh) (edit: yooo this isn’t an ATUS thing but i made it with ATUS in mind! andy if u are reading this, thank you for your impact to the fandom via your fic)
this took so much time that i’m calling it a love letter to Minecraft for continuing to make the wildest stuff as the years go by. but also, it’s just that. an exploration of various dimension :]
dimensions shown: (1) just a custom/random one from a yt comment i saw; (2) pillars; (3) spiral; (4) missing; (5) isolation

can i ask why you dont want ppl tagging your posts with #atus? im just wondering :O
It’s just that the fic personally makes me uncomfortable lmao. and also that im not drawing atus, im drawing evo smp stuff, and theres so much cross tagging of atus in the evo smp tag even though the fic is completely different than evo smp canon.

beauty and the beast (1740) draws from animal bridegroom variants (atu 425a folktales) - or rather, the french salon fairy tales and literary folk tales did, and they created the culture around beauty and the beast - but it is not one. it was a novel. not folklore, not oral, not passed down from person to person before it was finally written down.
but the original version is also not what most people are familiar with!! or what they tend to mean when they talk about “the original” beauty and the beast! for the most part, people who know the story pre-disneyfication are familiar with beaumont’s (heavily abridged and didactic) children’s version published in 1756, or sometimes lang’s. personally i prefer lang’s as a starter, but it was published almost 150 years after villeneuve’s novel.
interesting stuff to keep in mind when anyone, including myself, makes broad claims about beauty and the beast’s core themes or purpose.

Hermitcraft ask thing
1 - when and how did you get into hermitcraft? - I had just finished watching Grian’s Evo series and saw his first Hermitcraft episode. I followed from there.
2 - what was the first hermit you watched? was it hermitcraft or another series of theirs? - Lol, pretty much the same answer as the one above. I watched Grian originally, and I actually found Grian just through his build tutorials
3 - watched any past seasons? - I have not, not in their entirety at least. I did go back and watch all of Xisuma’s evilXisuma episodes though, just for fun.
4 - favourite hermit? - I don’t have a single favorite, but right now my top 3 are Doc, Grian, and Impulse.
5 - favourite duo, trio or group? - Oof, uh... I guess I’d have to go with Architechs, since they’re the ones I’ve seen the most of, but I also adore ZIT and the ConVex
6 - favourite server event? - Demise by far. That was so incredibly fun to watch, also, it got me to branch out and watch at least one episode for a bunch of hermits I’d never watched before.
7 - favourite build? - That’s a tough one, but I think it would be Scar’s volcano island base. That thing is incredible.
8 - what hermit’s building style do you like most? and does it influence/resemble yours? - I have to go with Grian, and yeah, I’ve definitely been improving my building based on his stuff.
9 - since watching hermitcraft have you started saying things the hermits say? if so, what are they? (ex. “core concept”, “-ificate”, “- of doom”) - Lol, I can’t say I have
10 - how do you go about watching hermitcraft? (do you wait until the end of the week and binge everyone’s eps? do you use youtube’s speed settings? do you listen while doing something else? etc.) - Hm, well, pretty much, I wake up and check my youtube notifications to see who posted while I was asleep, then go through them based on who I’m most excited to watch. So, say if Grian, Iskall, Mumbo, and Zedaph all posted, I’d watch them in that order. And generally speaking I like to just sit and watch, maybe while eating, but sometimes if they start getting into long-winded redstone things (especially Iskall or Mumbo) then sometimes I’ll scroll through tumblr while listening.
11 - favourite hermit to listen to? - Doc. 100%. I can listen to his voice all day every day. Impulse is a close second though, I’ve recently found I really like his voice.
12 - favourite inactive hermit? - I don’t think I have one, since I haven’t really watched any of the hermits that are currently inactive.
13 - do you watch the recap? - Yup, even though I watch most of the hermits, the recap is still hilarious.
14 - favourite intro/outro? (whether just a spoken one or an edited one) - Zedaph’s intro. I love the music and the editing and just, everything. It always makes me dance in my seat a little bit.
15 - watch any hermit streams? if so, who’s? - I try to catch any streams I can, particularly Impulse, Tango, Cub, and Doc.
16 - favourite hardcore hermits season/team? - I don’t think I have a favorite, but I’ve only watched 1 season of it, lol.
17 - have any episodes you constantly go back to? which ones? - Uh... Not really, if I re-watch things it’s usually in order, or because I’m looking for something specific.
18 - what’s your favourite thing about the fandom? - The fanart and fanfics. I’ve been following fanartists like crazy over the last few days, and spending tons of time reading fanfics. My favorite fics so far are ATUS and TWOL
19 - favourite hermit design? (whether yours or someone else’s) - Maci’s Tango (I mean, everything Maci draws, but right now, specifically Tango)
20 - favourite hermit skin? - Uuuuuhhh Ren? I guess?
21 - favourite hermit interaction? - All of it.
22 - know any cursed things about the hermits you wish you didn’t know? - I mean, I have a video compilation of Grian swearing? But I loving having that knowledge. XD
23 - what was your original opinion on hermitcraft/a hermit? did it change? - I learned about Hermitcraft through Grian, and I’ve loved it since he started. A specific hermit... I guess Keralis took some getting used to. I had a hard time with his accent at first, but now I watch him all the time so *shrug*
24 - favourite honorary hermit? (ex. scicraft dudes, zloy and pix, etc.) - I don’t have a favorite
25 - any hermit quotes that have stuck with you? -  "I mean if you wanna do me, I don't know... then I guess that's a deal we could make too." - VintageBeef to Keralis

Songs For The Hermits/Jukeboxes
Yeah, I have a lot of thoughts about songs, what of it? Anyway:
Dear Wormwood [The Oh Hellos] for the scene in And The Universe Shifts where Mumbo confronts Grian and they hug (I plan on drawing this)
Second Child, Restless Child [The Oh Hellos] for Grian or EX existing
Particle Man [They Might Be Giants] for reasons stated earlier
Can’t Stand The Rain [The Recues] and Change Your Mind [Steven Universe] but also Distant Shore [Steven Universe] like Andy said
I Have Made Mistakes [The Oh Hellos] because yeah that’s just kinda the general vibe from ATUS
Little Lion Man [Mumford & Sons] for ATUS, Doc being upset about the nHo, and maybe a bit of The Red Sun Never Sets (also my AU stuff but that doesn’t count right now)
Family [Mother Mother] have you HEARD that song??? That is found family in a nutshell my friend. It also just generally raidiates hermit energies tbh
Okay, so I ran out here but I will have more eventually (also, sorry Andy, I just have a lot to say about ATUS)

Well I drew Grian and I hate empty white space so bunch of random stuff. I gave him Elytra that look like parrot wings, but I'll draw Elytra diffrently. This is actually my first time drawing him because drawing fanart makes me panic. Also I finished reading ATUS by @ayapcraft . It's really good.

This spread is for @kaerunotame Who is wonderful and I will miss and I hate all gamers on this shitty site for making her feel like she should leave. Y’all are assholes and this woman is the best.
Your spread is a 5 card Pyramid spread with two crossed cards in the center. In this spread the triangle represents the first formulation of an object or a second dimension in space. There is a sort of beginning, middle and end. When you draw a single dot for 1 and if you add another dot for the number 2, you can create a straight line but add a third dot and now you have a triangle, a shape, an object in two dimensional space. The center card on the bottom of the two represents the internal or emotional central idea of the spread. The top center card represents the external central idea or what action is crucial to what you’re set to do.
Now imagine that you’re looking at one side of a pyramid dead on.
The first and uppermost point of your pyramid is the 10 of Wands, Oppression.
This is the peak of action, hella stuff going down and it’s goddamn back breaking. This is trying to herd kittens. The actions that you’re taking in your life or thing things you’re doing are becoming overwhelming. The structure and order of Saturn is trying to pin down the fiery moving arrow of Sagittarius. There is a lot on your plate and the plate is heavy.
So, shit is hard and frustrating and well, oppressive, but 10s are the peak, the end! Prepare for the come down.
The second point, the first to connect to the earth is ALL OF IT ATU XXI The Universe, Saturn, Tau.
The Universe is the totality of what we can sense and know. The dance of the Woman with the cosmic serpent and the Eye destroying while everything constantly recreates. We see the Universe only from our position in it. You may send out your satellites to explore unknown areas but you can only process what they might mean from your place. The more we try to take into our restrictive minds and spirits, the more we know about the whole and ourselves and our place in the Universe.
Step back and look at the connections and totality of everything you know and experience. It’s quite a view.
The last point and the corner that then connects again to the top completing the geometry is the Princess of Wands, the earthy part of Fire.
This is the material substance that comes from fuels action. Think of this: you have to make a fire because it is cold. You have a set amount of wood. You can make a big ass, bright ass fire that will leave you cold later that night when you’re out of wood, but jazzed while it’s happening. Or you can make a smaller, less exciting fire that will keep you warm all night.
There is also a message about the last step in any action is really to become the actions and to let them become you. When your very Earthly substance is in it, you are no longer doing you just are.
Don’t burn yourself out and exhaust your resources on what you’re tackling in life right now. Do this and you shall live to dance and party another night.
The heart of the pyramid holds the base, the Acof Disks, the root power of Earth or the material.
This is the foundation which all your solid structures are and will be built on. This is the very root of your real world/material life situation. While this doesn’t mean you must tear everything down or that there is nothing in your material world that you've built, it does mean you must look at the source from which you've built your material and everyday world. If you have no foundation you can have no structure. If you have a shoddy foundation, you'll have a shoddy structure. Look to what things were like where you are before you began building. Is there sand beneath you? Are you in a swamp, building castles of stone that will bind to the mud and be pulled down much sooner than later? Did you account for the raise in elevation when you laid your foundation? Look down to the base of what you've made and what you've made it upon.
This is an engineering job, you’ll need tools to measure and level everything out. The occult might not be the best place to find these tools and it is possible that you have issue much more base than you're willing to cop to. There are many tools you can use to look at your foundation provided in psychology and meditation from other sources. The Universe throws us extreme situations and more often than not, this is the only way people see their basest of instincts and behaviors really act out. If you can, take a look at what connects you and what you’re building to the Earth before an earthquake, tornado, volcano, or other act of G-D forces you to pray everything was fine. Check the strength of your foundations before the strength of your foundations are checked.
Get down to the base fundamentals of what is going on in your material (things, money, living situation, literal stuff) and build from the ground up if you must.
And the limestone surface of the pyramid is marked with (friend of the blog) ATU XV The Devil OR The Lord of the Gates of Matter, Ayin, Capricorn.
The Goat-Fish who is half in the mountains and half in the deeps of the oceans, high places and the deep. This guy gets a REALLY bad rap that is very unwarranted. All The Devil is trying to do is Incarnate or materialize by Higher methods.
The card is a giant cock with faceless little white people in the balls looking like they want out, again, possibility trying to take hold and become a physical thing. The Devil IS a trickster (“you little devil” and assorted shit sayings like that) so that worries some people. Those people are squares and probably have bad taste in music.
Manifest your potential and figure it out when it’s “real” and not just a passing thought or whim.
So, you’re coming to the end of a real hard project or task that’s got you feeling overwhelmed and just “over” so chill. It’s over and then the come down will come. Finishing this mess is going to give you a much bigger perspective on what you’re doing and how that fits in with everything, but keeping this all together is going to require you to pace yourself and not burn up all at once in a rush to finish everything. Take your time, it’ll all be there in the morning, you don’t have to proverbially “stay up all night” to finish everything.
All of this is about getting back to the foundations of who you are and how you do things in this life. And what I’d say is holding it all together is the need to manifest what YOU have lurking below the surface, what YOU desire in this life and what YOU need to bring into the world through a specific ritual of creation only YOU know. Invoke the devil (metaphorically, or literally if you’d like), They have something to tell you.
TA DA! Hope that helps and thank you again and I’ll miss you! Dea’s spread is coming up shortly!
Thank you for donating and please get at me with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Helluuu! New Hermitcraft watcher here. Speaking of Watchers, would you be so kind as to explain what they are, and what they have to do with Grian? I keep seeing this word in fanfics, and it thoroughly confuses me. Love and thanks!
don't worry about not knowing what watchers are! they are - and this is key - not remotely canon to hermitcraft. they're popular in fanon but they are not at all canon to hermitcraft and not a requirement to know in order to enjoy hermitcraft and grian in general.
but, okay - the watchers come from an old series grian was in, called evo. i have not watched evo so take my statements with a grain of salt. in evo, the watchers were a few things. they were ambiguous figures who would challenge the players, punish them when they were being bad (grian was often a target here), and left cryptic angel-looking statues places. at the end of grian's own run of evo, the evolutionists fought the ender dragon. grian ended up alone, fighting the dragon, and at the end of the fight, became a watcher himself.
this is where the important fact of "watchers were intended in many ways to be an audience stand-in, and grian leaving the series and becoming a watcher is a very on-the-nose statement about the fact that he was no longer a part of evo, and was joining the audience" comes in. (you'll note that when i do stuff with watchers i mostly play with this meta aspect, because that's the part i personally find interesting.)
there is some further thing about the listeners, which appear to be some faction in rebellion against the watchers i think, that happens in jimmy's evo series.
for a while, that's what the fandom had. a fic got very popular in 2019-ish called "and the universe shifts", which played with the watcher concept, and invented a lot of the fanon the fandom uses. in that fic, grian escaped the watchers, who are explicitly evil, and the watchers come back to get him. that's also where the common fanon design of "purple wings and the mask with the evo symbol on it" comes from. it's also where the most common incarnation of "the watchers are evil and grian had to escape from them and is very traumatized" comes from. the fandom has since expanded and iterated on that a lot, and not every version of this has its roots in atus! but a lot of common watcher fanon comes from there.
then for a while watchers were still just fanon, until the end of last life. in third life and last life, martyn's series featured a mysterious, malicious voice that was trying to help him win/get him to do things that were wrong. at the end, it was revealed that, in martyn's canon, this voice was some kind of watcher. it made reference to grian being a watcher, as well as martyn and jimmy's listener thing. it also stated that third life/last life was basically a trap, so that the watchers could feed off the suffering of the players. (i think, this is another thing i haven't actually watched in full yet. i mained joel and cleo in last life i mostly just heard about martyn's whole thing second hand,)
its worth noting, however, that martyn did this on his own, and the hermits have long had a history of "what is canon for one of us isn't necessarily canon for all of us". see, that clip of cleo basically saying "yeah the hermatrix stuff isn't canon for me" (not in those words but that was the intent). so it's kind of mostly... semi-canon to last life/third life?
and this is where i remind everyone that last life/third life is also only semi-canon to hermitcraft - they've made references but no really strong ones and not everyone has made references to it.
so, yes, anyway: that's what watchers are and how they relate to grian! here's my final statement that this is fanon, not canon (although, rather like a lot of the hels hermits stuff, people treat it as fully canon in a way it is not). which isn't like, a way to say its bad, i like doing stuff with the watcher stuff too, i just like drawing that line because sometimes i very much DON'T want to do stuff with the watcher stuff, so clarifying that its fanon is helpful to me in that regard.
i hope this helps!
