More reasons why Zuko being the Firelord is objectively the funniest thing on earth:
HES SEVENTEEN
He hasn’t been civilised in 4 years, his entire teenage experience consists of living on a boat and sleeping rough. The most stable bed he has was probably in Ba Sing Se he probably will just nap anywhere.
He has customer service experience which means he probably uses his customer service voice on his minsters.
Additionally he probably just wanders into to kitchen to get his own snacks and tea because he forgets what servants do.
He probably has no idea why he can’t just chase after an assassin he used to hunt the avatar for Agnis sake why is the captain of the guard demanding he stay in his room he’ll find the guy first (he’s probably right)
Katara probably has a free pass on Eco terrorism because what’s he going to do challenge her, she’ll beat his ass.
If he saw a minster doing something shady he will either invite lady Beifong to detect their BS or commit B&E and look for evidence himself.
He somehow found a baby dragon and raises it.
He will be far to willing to give Kyoshi island anything they want cause he feels bad and Suki scares him.
He randomly insisted on giving some earth kingdom village 100 ostrich horses.
The Avatar will just show up call him Hotman and demand the go on adventures and the Firelord will just dip because he’s been confined to long and has the Zoomies.
He takes far to much advice from Sokka and will genuinely believe if someone doesn’t get Sokkas plans they must be an idiot because Sokka is 16.
Sokka and Zuko also get into a lot of teenage rebellion phases by accident.
Toph just walks in breaks a wall of his palace and demands a field trip that always involves the Firelord having to explain himself to the cops.
He somehow knows every dangerous teen in the world and they all come for tea uninvited.
He has broken into both the NWT and Ba Sing Se.
He has a really well documented facial scar and official portraits but still disappears to be Lee the tea guy like no one knows.
HES SEVENTEEN.

Ok can we talk about how toph held up a huge ass building? I feel like this is never addressed.
Tumblr media
The Gaang is in the sand, which is already hard for Toph to see/feel, and then she holds up this giant library?? While trying to protect Appa.
Also, can we talk about how its not one mass of rock-it's made of bricks, and being held together by gravity. She really said "Every one of you blocks, pillars, tiles, boards, and the rest of you are going to stay in your exact spots and not sink to the spirit world BECAUSE I SAID SO!" while she was fighting super mystical spirit magic. While fighting and actual spirits power. For who knows how long, because Sokka and Aang had time to check every date till Sozins comet would hit at least a few months away.
Can we also talk about how Toph was so upset and ashamed about loosing Appa due to sand bending skill that she practiced hard to perfect it.

Loved this scene in the atla live action because right. Zuko could easily beat that woman. He could drop her without thinking about it. But she’s not who he’s after, it’s Aang that he wants, and despite denying it, Zuko still has compassion for innocent lives. So even when it would be easier to just punch her in the face and move on, Zuko lets her beat him back because he doesn’t really want to hurt people, he just wants to go home

so, watched ep 1 of the atla live action and uhm, imagine not wanting one of your main characters to depict sexism because you believe it doesn’t read well in Current Times, so instead you double down on the character’s obsession towards leadership in order to give him that extra edge. but in order to make that work u have to make his sister quietly obedient instead of an outspoken leading presence that has the potential to overshadow him. because silencing a female character in order to write out a male character’s story arc of unlearning sexism is obviously a better and less sexist outcome.

Always remember this is the one and only time I will ever speak about this Netflix live action adaptation of Avatar the Last Airbender.
The sexism elements are a very important part of the show. Sokka being a sexist at the beginning is important because it’s a part of his character development. He has this delusional view point of masculinity all while being ignorant about women and what they are capable of doing. He gets humbled hard by the Kyoshi warriors, especially by Suki, who mostly did all of the humbling, and that is where their relationship starts.
The sexist interactions between the water tribe water benders and Katara is in the show not just to have Katara gain a win over a man, but to prove her biggest point, which is simple: she is just as capable as the male water benders in the tribe, and she doesn’t care if she loses or wins, she is there to prove her case.
So removing the sexism in the live action show shoots Sokka’s character development in the foot, and it takes away the biggest character highlight for Katara. It would be just like them removing the genocide elements from the show because it would be too scary or too dark for kids, which would declaw the Fire Nation, especially Azula, who is the best female villain in the series.

I just keep thinking how genuinely stupid it is to already explain why you left out certain stories or changed certain aspects BEFORE the show is even out. Fans are now deciding whether or not they'll watch based on this. Talk about shooting your own foot

I love you shows with planned & definitive endings, I love you epilogues that prove the happy ending lasts, I love you finales that feature direct parallels to earlier seasons, I love you cast members that left years ago but came back to say goodbye, I love you well crafted & impactful final lines, I love you fitting send offs for the characters I love

Sokka wants to study Zuko under a microscope not even in a gay way (though yes that too) but more how is your dumbass not dead? It breaks all laws of physics? What do you mean you swam in the northern sea waters and didn’t get hyperthermia? How do you leap like 30 ft of exploding buildings? How are you this dumb while doing all this shit? How many concussions have you had and at what point did they grant immortality?

Rewatched Sokka’s Master today and while I’ve always known that episode was impeccable, what stood out to me this time was the subplot about Aang, Katara, and Toph missing Sokka, which I find absolutely wonderful because it has nothing to do with how “useful” he is in terms of his skill set. It’s not that they go on a mission and realize they’re lost without Sokka’s tactical abilities. It’s not that they’re in a situation where none of them can bend and they need Sokka to teach them how to fight in other ways. It’s genuinely just them being lost without Sokka because he’s funny. It’s not showing that Sokka’s indispensable as a warrior, but that he’s indispensable as the friend they can count on to lighten the mood, and that that’s just as important

Excuse my Zutara fangirlism but I’m on my hundredth ATLA rewatch and I just noticed another one of those scenes that could have made for PERFECT foreshadowing… it’s really crazy how this ship wrote itself in the show!
Anyways notice how Katara reacts to Jet seemingly wanting to join the gaang and Toph calling her out on it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Excuse the bad quality Netflix didn’t allow me to take screenshots bahah)
And then:
Tumblr media
She’s blushing because she obviously had feelings for Jet, a canonical love interest of hers.
But doesn’t this scene strike you as familiar in any way…..?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She reacted the same way with Zuko, these scenes are so identical it’s INSANE! The subtext!! *screams*
Tumblr media
But this time Zuko is genuine and works to gain her trust back!! And then we see him risk his life for her like a couple episodes later…. AHHHHH
How are they not a canon couple again??

The ATLA live-action changing a core part of Sokka's character arc because sexism is "iffy" is just the latest example of showrunners/writers treating the audience like they're stupid. We all knew growing up watching the animated show that Sokka's sexism was bad. The show showed how wrong he was at every turn and he grew from it. Ask anyone who watched it and they'll say that by the end of the first season, Sokka is their BOY. Sokka is like all of us in that we may be products of our environments but we also never stop growing and learning as people. That's important to show. Honestly I'm constantly torn between how showrunners are afraid to take "bolder" swings because they're afraid of the audience not getting it, and how some people genuinely seem to be losing media literacy.

listen I might not know much about atla, but I finally watched the show and my current favorite theory is that Zuko was Sokka's bi awakening because all of the hot men had left when he was like, twelve
