I suppose its a couple of things. Mostly, if I can see clearly how the scene might continue, even if there are multiple paths it could take. If there is something for each muse to react to or talk about. As long as there is something moving the action along, and they're not just floating in some undefined space talking about the weather when they don't know each other, then it should be fine! Even then, if our muses have an interesting dynamic, or i enjoy the opposing muse, i feel like i can be interested no matter what!

Hello there DM! I am a (very new) DM, and I have a question. I am running a oneshot, and designing the PCs for my players (mostly inexperienced) to pick from. I haven't designed the monsters yet (waiting on the monster manual from the library) so I'm trying to decide if I should put all the PCs at level 5 or so (instead of level 1) to make sure they have a fighting chance against the monsters I send them. Would you raise their level a bit, or leave them at level 1? Or does it depend heavily on what I choose with the monsters?

Hello! Thank you so much for your ask and welcome to the wonderful world of DMing!

Starting with your question on levels, I personally recommend tapping the starting level out at level 3 with brand new players. It's not so simple that your players could get bored but also not so complicated that they could get confused and overwhelmed.

When it comes to encounters, you'll want to consider 3 things:

What story do you want to tell?

What monsters and/obstacles do you want to put in to tell that story?

What level do your players need to be in order to overcome those obstacles?

The first two are pretty self explanatory. Do you want to run a Gothic adventure? Then your players might encounter spooky mansions and vampires. Sci-fi? Spaceships and robots. Classic Fantasy? Dungeons and Dragons 😆. When you have a direction, what to fill it with becomes easy. And when you know what level your players are, then the catalog to choose from narrows down even more.

Monsters have what's called a CR level. This is their relative power level in relation to the player's level. For example, a giant rat has a CR of 1/8, a vampire has a CR of 5, and a young red dragon has a CR of 10. A level 5 party could easily handle themselves against quite a few giant rats. Likewise, they could take on one vampire, giving them a fun challenge that is easily beatable. However, put a level 5 party against a young red dragon and they very well could turn into a crispy appetizer. You don't want to run a Level 20 adventure and have your players fighting little rats in the basement nor do you want to put some bright-eyed level 1s against Tiamat herself. (I'm looking at you, Animated Cartoon.)

All in all, it's up to you! Craft an adventure that you think will be fun and more than likely your players will have fun to. Happy gaming and may the dice gods be ever in your favor!

21. Do you prefer writing chaptered fics or one-shots?

This is a tough one! I probably prefer writing one-shots generally speaking, mostly because I'm a completionist at heart and I love being able to knock something out and throw it into the world, but chaptered fics really are a whole different experience as a writer and having people follow along with your story in real time etc is, just, wildly validating.

30. How much do you edit your fics? Do you edit as you write or wait until you finish the first draft?

I honestly don't edit much at all. Any editing I do I do as I go, and if I'm writing long chaptered stuff I might have a few changes to make after beta notes, but for the most part I just write annoyingly clean copy lol.

Sorry I put this off for ages, you asked so many and every time I remembered up until now I just didn't have the time! For anyone else who wanted to ask anything and missed the original post, it's here.

Books, but she's fairly proactive about having a clear-out every few years.

4. What is their favorite music genre?

She mostly listens to popular pop/rock stuff but she does tend to buy albums rather than just listening to the top 40 singles going around. She also still likes all the pop/soft rock stuff her Dad listened to when she was little.

7. What is their shoe size?

Whatever size I drew her feet that day I'm still working on being good at those.

8. Do they have a favorite fabric or texture?

Not really, but she likes cosy blankies and big soft cushions etc.

13. Did they have a favorite comfort item as a child?

Nah, she was always running from one thing to the next and is very people-oriented. Whatever family member she was with she'd probably be sitting on the lap of or cuddling up to with whatever they were doing.

28. What sound do they hate the most?

No unique/fun answer coming to me on this one, probably standard annoying sounds!

29. What video game would appeal to them the best?

For single player she would only ever really play casual stuff like mobile games, the Sims, etc, but she enjoys playing multiplayer games with friends and will do her best to understand whatever genre you throw at her if she can.

30. How would they relax on a day off/rainy day?

She likes to hang out with friends whatever the weather, but otherwise you can find her reading, watching TV or looking at fashion stuff online.

33. What is their personal style? Favorite outfit?

She has a lot of confidence about her appearance and likes to look good. She's not necessarily into runway fashion that much but is happy when she can look in the mirror and think "yep this could be a poster in a clothes shop window".

37. Do they prefer to be really cold or really warm?

She likes summer weather better than winter but like most of us prefers it mild.

43. What do they think is their worst quality? What is their actual worst quality?

She thinks she's annoying to some people due to the reactions of folks like Vienna etc, but literally doesn't know what to do about it so just carries on and rolls with the punches. Some might say her worst quality is that she tends to act/speak upon the first thought that pops into her head, manifesting in what feels to most like a lack of common sense. But just as often this can lead to situations that endear her to others due to her sincerity and honesty, so like, sure it's her "worst trait" but by who's standard?

48. What are they most afraid of?

She's completely incapable of dealing with jumpscares. While she worries about being seen as annoying, she's hopeful that people still like or tolerate her in spite of that. She fears being truly hated, even by someone who she actively doesn't care about. A friend saying "who cares, that guy's a jerk anyway..." might help some people out of that funk, but not her.

"Okay! So here's the plan. Step 1: Find God. Step 2: Usurp and take Its throne. Step 3: Make It send me back in time. Step 4: Find Ingo. Step 5: Find and defeat God again! Step 6: Make It send us home. Step 7: Party!" Elesa stared at Emmet for a very long moment. "Are you SURE that this is a good idea."

Aka I saw that one and immediately thought, you know what's easier said than done? Fighting and usurping God. Cue a montage of Emmet trying to tackle and go fisticuffs against Arceus, only to bounce off if it like a tic tac.

On Thin Ice

It's the dead of winter in Hisui and Lake Acuity has frozen over. Gaeric decides to head out over the ice (why, I haven't figured out yet), but it's thinner than he expected. Aka a story in which Gaeric almost drowns. It's fine though! Uxie (or something like that) saves him!

Alternatively... Like... It's still winter in Hisui and Party A and Party B are fighting. They're walking out over a frozen lake or river. Somehow one of them breaks through the ice and the other has to dive in and save the other. After the two get back to safety, they chill out, reconcile, and agree to not fight any more. For some reason my first instinct was for this to be Ingo and Gaeric...? It's when Ingo is still very new to the Pearl Clan and Gaeric is suspicious of him. Either of them could have fallen through the ice with the other saving them. Afterwards Gaeric chills out a bit and decides that Ingo's not too bad after all. I just think that Ingo would make for a great straight man to Gaeric and seeing them bounce off of one another would be fun. Second instinct was Melli and Ingo. Because OF COURSE Melli would pick a fight, and OF COURSE Melli would break through the ice and not be able to save himself! Of course Melli is a tsundere about it afterwards. Third instinct is Adaman and irida with Adaman breaking through the ice and Irida saving him. That's probably the best option tbh. Makes the most sense... But is also probably the least funny. >.>
