Summer went away Still, the yearning stays
8 years old.
There was something so beautiful about the first day of summer break. Maybe it was the fact that the alarm clock didn’t go off and that the sun-soaked curtains were the ones that woke you up, softly letting the warm sunlight hit your face as a reminder that the best twelve weeks of the year were going to start.
Or maybe it was the smile that was immediately drawn upon your face as you heard your best friend call from downstairs:
“Oi, Y/N! What are you waiting for, you bugger?!”
Your barefoot feet touched the floor of your room as you ran to your window, watching with bright eyes and an excited smile as your next-door neighbor and best friend, Ashton, was already waiting for you, all dressed up in his bathers.
“C’mon! We don’t have all day!” He yelled again. You rolled your eyes.
“I’ll be there in 5 minutes!”
You closed your window and headed to the bathroom where you carefully prepared your bathing suit the night before when Anne-Marie came to ask your mother if you and Ash could have a playdate today. More specifically, Ashton was really excited to play with the sprinkler they just got to water the plants, and since neither of them got a swimming pool, he thought it’d be the best idea to combat the Australian heat that way.
Once your teeth were brushed, your hair combed, and your bathing suit on, you were ready to take on summer with your best friend. You ran downstairs to the kitchen, putting on your flip-flops and grabbing your strawberry shortcake backpack before grabbing a cookie from the counter.
“Bye mum!” You called, before heading toward the backyard door.
“Not so fast, young lady!” Your mother’s voice could be heard from the other side of the kitchen.
You sighed as you turned around. Looking defeatedly at the ground as you made your way to her. She stood tall with a crooked brow upon her face, pursing her lips as if she asked you a question even though she never did.
“What’d you got there, sweetie?” She asked, pointing her head toward you but to nothing in particular.
“Uh…”
“Didn’t we talk already about making healthier choices from now on?” She sighed, grabbing the cookie from your hand and giving you an orange instead. “Last year we let it go because of everything that was going on, but you need to start thinking about taking care of yourself, okay?” You nodded.
It wasn’t difficult to understand what she meant. You ate your vegetables and fruits, except bananas and the weird food grandma made that had seeds in it. But it was summer, and she made those cookies yesterday so, who was going to eat them, then?
“Good.” She smiled, cupping your face and placing a small kiss on your forehead “You’ll look so pretty when you grow up, I promise. Now, go play! But be back before sunset!”
“Alright!”
Your smile came back to your face as you walked and peeled the orange, crossing the backyard and opening the fence’s gate that connected your house to Ash’s. There, he was sitting on the ground looking attentively at the gate.
“Finally!” He groaned “I don’t know if you know what 5 minutes are but those were not it”
You chuckled “Sorry! Orange slice?”
“Thanks,” He smiled, getting a whole one in his mouth as he spoke, or tried to, at least “Nough checkth thith outh!”
He walked to the side of the house where he connected the sprinkler to the hose. And suddenly it was like a cascade of rain was falling over you. You squeaked in delight and giggled as you got completely soaked in under a second, watching in awe as the water rose to incredible heights for an eight-year-old and drew shapes in the sky before it fell down over you.
Ashton came running, jumping over the sprinkler and laughing as it moved around, creating new shapes that would soon cover the whole yard in water. You joined him immediately, allowing the water to soak away the heat of the first of many memorable summer days that year.
You played all day and all afternoon. Anne-Marie brought you sandwiches for lunch and stayed with you for a while, even playing with you as she held a small, baby Lauren in her arms, letting her enjoy the water as well. You and Ash would create the most bizarre adventures, imagining you were pirates having a final battle at a waterfall (his idea), pretending you were water fairies (your idea), and trying to see who could outrun the water (both your ideas, neither of you could win).
By the end of the day, you were both exhausted laying on the grass, giggling.
“I don’t want summer to be over!” He said, exaggeratingly throwing his arms to the sky to let them drop to the ground.
“Today’s the first day,”
“But that means one day less!”
“True…” You sighed “Maybe one day we can live on a permanent vacation. Where we don’t have to go to school or work”
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Ashton asked, turning toward you.
“Like a real job or my dream job?”
“Aren’t those the same?”
“My mom doesn’t think so. At least she says my dream job is not a real job here so it won’t work”
“Your dream job, then”
“I want to be a singer,” You said, smiling.
Ashton looked confused “But that’s a real job!”
“My mom says it’s not” You shrugged “And I haven’t thought about my real job yet. So what about you?”
“I want to be in a band,” Ashton said with a confident nod “And I’m going to make it my real job”
“Can I be in your band?” You asked.
“Sure! You’re my best friend, of course, you can be in it! Now we only need someone who can play the guitar”
That day you went to bed with a smile on your face.
* I hear it in your voice You're smoking with your boys I touch my phone as if it's your face
17 years old
You halt at the door, take off one of your headphones, and turning back.
“What?”
Your mother, already huffing her way out to meet you halfway, rolled her eyes.
“I said, what are you wearing?”
“Clothes, mom” You answered, tiredly “I’m going to school, you know? The one I’m going to be late to if I don’t catch the bus?”
“Are you sure you don’t want to change?” She tilted her head, “It looks like that’s one of my shirts and-”
“It’s my shirt, mom. We bought it last week” She seemed to have something else to say but you just didn’t have the energy to hear it “I’m gonna be late, bye”
You put back your headphones again, letting Paramore silence the outside world as you walked in the opposite direction to the bus stop. No, you were not going to skip, but the words your mother didn’t say were clinging to the back of your heads like nails, so what if the normal fifteen-minute ride turned into a forty-minute walk? You had time, and plus, the windy morning could really help dry the tears that were already gathering in your eyes.
Crying is not something you did and you were not about to start now. You just got to toughen up, take her words with a grain of salt and keep going. It's not like you’re not making an effort. Is just that for her it is hard to see it since there’s no progress to be shown as fast as she would like.
You’re not in bad shape at all; you’re not a bad kid; your grades are good. It’s just that perfection has a standard in her eyes that you just haven't met yet.
Brick by Brick played for the third time in a loop before you got to school with a few minutes to spare. You smiled at a few of your classmates that you saw in the hallway and went to your locker, opening it to get the things you needed for your first class.
“Hey, you!” A familiar voice said next to you.
You smiled softly as you mindlessly handed Ashton your bag.
“Hey, Ash. Just one moment, please?”
He shrugged as he leaned against the lockers, watching as you put an oversized sweater over your clothes.
“We’re in Australia in April”
“I’m cold”
“Well, it is the year of the end of the world…” You rolled your eyes as you grabbed your bag from him and started to walk together to your first class “Icebergs will melt, the desert will freeze, kangaroos will take over the world-”
“Oh, I would be long dead before a kangaroo tried to fight me” You laughed.
“I’ll defend you!”
“So that our mothers could bury us next to one another? How charming”
The bell rang just in time for the two of you to take your seats. Biology would be the only class you’d share that day and you won’t be seeing each other again until lunchtime rolled around. By that time you were used to losing yourself in thought, especially on days like these where somehow nothing seemed to fit. Or was it because you felt misplaced? You would watch your classmates, smile at them, and make idle talk. You would take notes for your classes and answer the questions the teachers make. But there wasn’t a future here, nothing that seemed to last or that would make you want to stay.
Weekdays were routine that you would soon forget come the weekend. And now the desolated two-day break felt more like the same futile attempt to make something meaningful without succeeding at it. Looking at the window from your room made no sense anymore knowing that Ashton was most likely somewhere else entirely.
At the end of last year, some boy from another school messaged him on facebook asking him to play a gig with them. Since then, Ashton has joined their little band called 5 seconds of summer. A playful name for a band of high schoolers.
You’ve met them a few times and have watched them play whenever they had a gig near town. They were good and were rapidly growing a loyal fanbase with their youtube videos. But their ambition was bigger than just a hobby, and you could see it not just in the way Ashton talked about them, but in the gleam in their eyes every time they hung out or when they played. They were something else and they were ready for more.
However, that didn’t take away the fact that you missed your best friend.
“Earth to Y/N?”
“Huh?” You woke up from your thoughts in the middle of the cafeteria.
Ashton was sitting next to you, a concerned look in his eyes.
“Are you going to finish your lunch?” He said, pointing to your barely touched tray.
“Uh, no. You can have it”
“You’ve barely eaten”
“I’m not hungry” You shook your head, already sliding the tray to him “And you didn’t bring anything again”
He sighed “I forgot… No, I think I put my lunch in Harry’s lunch box again”
“Lucky him, then” You smiled “You’re still driving me home after school and to Mulligan’s later tonight, right?”
Ashton stopped chewing, closing his eyes as he swallowed thickly. Your smile fell.
“Ash-”
“I’m sorry!”
“Ash, you promised-”
“I know! I know, I’m a dickhead!” He said with regret the moment he saw how sad you looked. “But I promised Calum that I would sneak him out of soccer practice to go rehearse at Michael’s for our gig on Saturday and I completely forgot! I’m so, so sorry Y/N”
A sharp pain went through your heart as you took a deep breath before nodding. You looked down to avoid looking him in the eye, knowing that those puppy, hazel eyes would make you weak in an instant. Your thumbs twiddled with each other under the table, trying to take some of the tension away and distract you from the moment. It was no big deal. It was okay.
“It’s okay”
Ashton was not fooled by the whisper in your voice. “Y/N-”
“It’s okay, Ash. Really” You said more firmly this time, looking at him but not directly at his eyes “I can walk myself home, I need the sunlight anyway. And we can do Mulligan’s another day if you’d-”
“No,” Ash shook his head, “I said I’d be there and I will. I can cut the rehearsal short and I’ll meet you guys there! I will not miss it, alright? After all, you can’t wait for the midnight of your birthday another day, silly”
You smiled as you rolled your eyes, letting his arms wrap around your shoulders and bringing you closer to him, wondering if he can feel just how fast is beating.
* (9:25 PM) me: Ash, I’m already at the bar. I was late lol. So it’s okay if you wanted to stay longer with the boys
(9:55 PM) me: are you on ur way? I ordered us some beers ;) I finally got to use my ID
(10:30 PM) me: I drank ur beer
(11:30 PM) me: you’re not coming, are you?
*
There were two rings before he picked up the call.
“Ash, where are you?” You said into the night air and into the phone. Your classmates were inside the bar, waiting for you to sing happy birthday. But there were still five minutes to go and the person that said would be there was nowhere to be found.
“I- I am Ash,” He said before he exploded in giggles, followed by a fading chorus of familiar laughs at the other side of the line.
Then it hit you. He was still at Michael’s. He never left.
“Ashton, are you- are you high?”
Another explosive set of laughter hit you as an answer. You ended the call. The picture you took at the beginning of the year, with Ashton carrying you on his back as you both wink and make peace signs at the camera, mocks you as you try your hardest to be stoic for yourself.
You looked up to the moon and took a deep breath before coming back to the bar, an already perfect fake smile plastered all over your face as your classmates sang happy birthday at the top of their lungs, half of them already drunk. You didn’t know smiling could hurt that much till then.
By the end of the night, you tried your hardest to ignore the random comments that you happened to hear.
“Where’s Ash?” Someone would ask
“I heard he simply didn’t want to come,” Someone else answered. You didn’t know if to believe them.
The next day you woke up with a thousand messages of apologies and a notebook wrapped in wooden paper.
“For all the songs you’re gonna write”
Anyway
* I wait patiently He's gonna notice me It's okay, we're the best of friends
21 years old
To put it simply, L. A was a fucking nightmare.
Nowhere in the world have you seen such hypocrites smiling at each other like they were best friends all their lives. People were getting high in the backyard by the pool; couples cheating on each other in the same house; every up and coming having their realities shatter in front of their eyes as they realize what their dream industry actually is. And all of that is happening inside your own house in Beverly hills. Yes, you left the outbacks of Australia behind to chase the dreams you fought bravely to make come true. And without anyone’s help, you made it.
You went to college to please your mom, but finding your joy after Ashton had left soon after graduating high school was not easy. However, in order to pay some of your debts, you started working at the same bar you and your classmates used to hang out at. Cleaning tables and serving drinks was not as exciting as it sounded, but what really made it worth it was the open mic nights where anyone could come and present a bit of stand-up comedy or original songs to the public. That’s where you found your escape. Quite literally.
Soon, you were discovered, signed, and shipped off to Los Angeles where success has been modest but impressive for someone with such a short career. But dreams are not easy to maintain.
To have a dream in the city of dreamers is to be a fish in an ocean. Not rare and not exceptional either. It was intimidating and scary, all the more doing it all by yourself in a country where no one seemed to be your friend. People here knew of you, but they didn’t know you at all. Not really.
Maybe you don’t know yourself either.
“Y/N!”
Once again, a voice pulled you from your own thoughts and into your party again. From afar you noticed Calum’s wide smile as he headed toward you, pushing through the sea of people.
The only ones you know here in L.A are the ones that got away years before you did and were creating havoc among the younger fans. 5 Seconds of Summer was an absolute hit, and they were barely staying at the same place for more than four weeks straight, but you were thankful anytime they did. They were your friends or at least acquaintances except for Ash. They reminded you of home, and one person, in particular, reminded you that there was more than that to hang on to.
“Cal!” You called, hugging him as soon as he came close “I’m so glad you could make it. I have no idea who any of these people are! Where are the others?”
Calum shrugged “Michael got dragged by someone already. Luke… is complicated”
“And Ash?”
You didn’t want to sound hopeful. You didn’t want to give anything away with the tone of your voice or the way your eyes begged you to look around for him, see if he just got lost among the crowd.
“He said he’d come” Calum said, pretending not to know how you feel “You know how he is. Sometimes he says one thing…”
“To change it at the last minute.” You sighed “I hate that about him”
“It’s Ashton”
“I asked him to come and help me with the recording of some drums at the studio last week, did he tell you?” He shook his head “He said that what I was doing “wasn’t really his thing” so maybe I should just call someone else”
“He said that to you?” Calum said in disbelief.
You nodded “He’s been a real asshole lately. And I did get someone else in the end, but…”
“Yeah, I get it. It’s the principle”
But it was not just that. The Ashton you met at school was not the same Ashton you found as an adult. And yes, people are bound to change and you have changed a lot as well, but looking back it makes you question whether this person made changes to keep themselves in your life or to make themselves a memory of what once was a good old time. And you were scared Ashton could become the latter.
For many years, Ashton was the only one by your side, or at least that’s what you knew of. When he left for London all those years ago, you were happy that he could chase all those dreams he once shared with you in your backyard as little kids. But once you caught on with life and fate decided that it was time to meet again, it was like there were already so many people beside him that you felt out of frame. You were his friend first. But maybe he forgot.
“Ooop, he just texted” Calum chimed in, sipping on his drink “He’s right outside, I told him we’re hiding in the kitchen”
You chuckled as your fingers drummed nervously on top of the counter, trying your hardest not to look at the door. Not yet, don’t let him see you waiting for him. Just one moment more-
“What the fuck?”
Calum’s whisper made your eyebrows turn into a frown as you followed his gaze. Oh, how you wish you didn’t.
Entering your kitchen filled with people was Ashton, a smile so shy and welcoming at the same time, hand in hand with one of the most gorgeous girls you’ve ever seen in your life. Your smile flattered for one second.
“I guess he’s not with Jess anymore…” Muttered Calum. Jess? Who was Jess? And who was this girl if Calum didn’t know?
Your heart grew heavy as the air around you thickened, yet you couldn’t tear your eyes away from them. From afar, Ashton noticed you - or he noticed Calum, you didn’t know - and raised his hand to say hi and kept walking into another room with his new girl following him.
That’s it? Not even a proper hello? This is your house, your party… A sunken feeling enveloped you as you excused yourself to the bathroom, ignoring the pointed look Calum gave you as he let you go without asking questions.
The music was muffled inside the tiled walls. You locked the doors and went to the sink, leaning over it with your hands on either side of the counter. A shaky breath escaped your lips as you counted to ten over and over again, repeating to yourself that you were okay. You were okay, or you would be. You had to be.
As you raised your head, the mirror showed the reflection of a girl whose eyes beat red from tears she refused to shed. You could not be that girl tonight.
So you smiled at your reflection, practicing what muscle memory taught you good girls do when things don’t go their way. You smiled and fixed your hair, and smiled again. It didn’t matter that the image that kept playing inside your head was his hands tangled in hers. It didn’t matter that he didn’t even say hello. This was not about him nor your broken heart. You had to keep going so you had to smile. It’s not the first time it happened, you should be used to it by now.
One last deep breath and you opened the door, going back to the party. But as you made your way back into the kitchen, you bumped into someone going in the opposite direction.
“Woah! Hey, Y/N!” He said, smiling as he hugged you like he used to do.
For a moment you let yourself forget where you were and be hugged by him, letting the smell of his cologne be tattooed somewhere in your brain.
“Hi, Ash”
“How- hey, are you crying?”
“What?” You blinked a couple of times “Oh, no! One eyelash fell into my eye and I had to get it out, you know how that makes me-”
“Yeah, you get weirded out by eyes” He cringed.
An awkward silence set between the two of you, not knowing what to say now that is just the two of them. But you… Oh, you could say so much, you just didn’t know where to start. You wanted to ask about the tour, how it went and what was his favorite place to visit. You were dying to mention their new songs and how they made you feel. You wanted to ask about his family, how is Anne-Marie? Is Harry doing well in school? Has Lauren started high school yet and how does she like it? Do they still live in the same house you grew up with? Do they know the memories you shared? Do they even remember you?
Does Ash?
But standing in front of him you felt as if you had no right to ask those questions anymore. Ashton was not looking at you anymore, but at his phone, even when you were right there. Does he not have any curiosity toward you as much as you have about him? Does he not care?
You used to be best friends. You still were, right?
Yet, those questions were never asked as you just turned and kept walking. And when you looked back you noticed that Ashton hadn’t moved, hadn't noticed you were gone.
And if while you were looking you noticed some freshly made hickeys on the back of his neck, then you decided to ignore that as well.
(3:07 PM) me: saw two kids in a backyard playing mermaids with a sprinkler today. we never had that idea before (6:20 PM) ash 😜: i would've never consented to mermaids, mind you (6:30 PM) me: are you sure? (6:32 PM) ash 😜: nah, i would end up with a tail in the end (6:40 PM) me: do you miss it?
* From sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes I waited ages to see you there I search the party of better bodies Just to learn that you never cared
25 years old
“Why am I not surprised?” Ashton laughed.
You didn’t notice his presence until he was standing in between you and the firepit in the backyard. He was wearing a shirt and a trenchcoat, lightly mocking your shivering figure as you sat outside on the last night of 2019.
“I don’t like parties” You answered.
“You never did,” Ashton said, sitting next to you “But that doesn’t give you the right to catch hypothermia”
“We live in L.A”
“Still,”
“I’m practicing”
“For what?” Ashton chuckled.
“Scotland,” You said, turning to look at him.
“Scotland? You’re gonna visit someone there, or?” He smiled, nervously.
“I’m moving there”
Ashton laughed loudly, “Bullshit!”
But you didn’t laugh along with him. Instead, you looked at him as the penny dropped and then moved your gaze to the fire again, finding comfort in the chaos. The only constant thing in your life.
Ashton blinked at you, elbowing you “You’re bullshiting me, Y/N”
You didn’t move, instead, you answered him in a monotone voice “Why would I?”
“What the fuck are you going to do in Scotland?!”
“The same, I guess?” You shrugged “I bought a house with a studio, my label has a branch there, I don’t do much touring so-”
“Were you going to tell me?!”
At this, you turn to him, almost as if to ask if he was serious.
“It’s not funny, Ash”
“The fuck is not! Of course not!” He shouted, getting up from his seat. The frown on his face deepened “You’re fucking moving away and you didn’t tell me?!”
“Why would I tell you?”
“Because we’re friends!”
At this, you couldn’t help but laugh. Like, actually, wholeheartedly laugh. Tears were at the corners of your eyes by the end of the laughing fit, even more so when you saw Ashton’s confused face standing in front of you.
Once you composed yourself, you shook your head.
“You can’t be serious right now”
“Y/N-”
“Honestly, Ashton. This- this is not funny, at all” You said, smile still on your face but your eyes getting redder as the tears gathered “You can’t- You can’t just come around every two years or so with a conversation and then yell at me and say that we’re friends as if you know what that means. No. Not with me, I- I won’t let it happen anymore”
You shook your head as a chuckle escaped your lips. “Ashton, tell me, right now. What’s the name of my cat?” He parted his lips but no words came out “What’s the name of my latest single?” Again, no answer “What’s the career I studied in uni before I came to the states?” By now, Ashton was looking down in shame “Ash, when is my birthday?”
That last answer broke your heart completely. You were hoping, wishing that at least that one he would get right. But his silence only confirmed what your heart knew. You closed your eyes as the tears finally slid down your cheeks, tired of being kept hidden all those years.
“Y/N-”
“No,” You raised your hand to stop him from saying anything else, “If it’s an apology I don’t want to hear it because it’s a little too late for that. Ashton, you have no idea what is like to have no one in your corner, and I pray that you never get to experience that. But all my life- all my life I’ve been waiting to be someone’s priority and when I finally put myself first, you come and try to berate me for it. I hate L.A. I had since the moment I came here. You had Calum, Luke and Michael, and countless other people to make you feel welcomed! but me? I had no one!”
All the feelings that were silenced over the years came crashing through. Unfiltered and uncensored. Like the fire in front of you, ready to spread out.
“And I tried to fit in. When I invited you and the guys and all of your friends, I wanted to make you feel that maybe I can still be part of this life as well! But they aren’t my friends, they’re yours. And you made no effort to even include me in your life as if I was someone that you tolerated from the past that’s long dead and gone. You have my memories, Ash. You have the same scars that I do, the same laughs, and the same tears from when we were kids till we were out of high school. We shared the same dreams and even though I knew you would make them more easily I prayed to god to take me where you would go because I knew that my place was with you, it didn’t matter where or how. I just wanted to be with my best friend, even if with time my best friend didn’t want to be my best friend anymore”
“Y/N,” His voice was small, fragile “That’s not true”
“Don’t lie!” You yelled through the tears “You’re being mean, Ash! You left me behind. You left me! And I’m still here, I was always here and you couldn’t see me, or you didn’t want to see me. You didn’t care! Could you look me in the eyes and tell me you didn’t know everything that was going on when we were kids?”
Ashton tried to keep his gaze up with yours but couldn’t, quickly looking away with guilt. You pressed your lips in a thin line as you nodded.
“I loved you, so so much. And I hate you for making me feel so unloved, so small and unimportant. I don’t think I can shake this now, and I don’t know if I can forgive you for making me hate myself this much when I did nothing to you”
You knew your words hurt him, but there was nothing you could say to take them back. You didn’t want to take them back.
You wiped your tears with the back of your hand and started walking back to the party, ready to ask an uber to drive you home.
Ashton didn’t follow, you knew he wouldn’t. And for the first time in years, you were glad he didn’t.
* (05:25 AM) Ashton Irwin: can we talk, please?

“You’re on your own kid, you always have been” You sang the last part of the acoustic set of your last album as the crowd went wild. You smiled at the small room, just a small acoustic session to start off the new era of songs about growth and finding yourself again after years of learning how to heal.
“There are many things in life that leave scars, things that we automatically assume about ourselves like muscle memory,” You said into the mic “For years we look for who to blame, and most of the time we carry that blame within ourselves and make ourselves believe that we are not worthy of beautiful things in the world. But I learned that even though these wounds and scars are mine, they don't own me as a person, they do not define me nor who I will become later in life. None of us are less deserving of love or the beautiful things in life just because we’ve struggled. And I-”
The words are stuck inside your throat for a moment, just a moment as your eyes make contact with the person standing in the corner of the room.
His arms are crossed over his chest, his smile is timid and a bit scared. But his eyes, although mature, kept that hazel glow that you’ve recognized anywhere. Even when years have passed.

for the title game: kiss me like a stranger
It’s with (one of) our favorite Cancer guy: Ashton😌
This is longer than a few paragraphs….🤭
•••
You’re a singer and we’re swept off your feet by a certain Aussie drummer. It was a whirlwind romance that blossomed before your own feet were planted firmly in the ground of stardom. He shared your songs, went to your shows, and you met on a carpet at a charity event.
You were seated a few rows behind him but he unashamedly craned his neck to look at you because you were so pretty. He stood and cheered when you performed your single that has been on the billboards top ten for a month.
At the after party he walked up to you with an air of confidence that immediately piqued your interest. Small talk turned into a whole evening of talking which transcended to a moonlit beach stroll. Your heels in your hand as you walked along the shoreline, not even minding the end of your dress was getting saltwater and sand embedded onto it.
After that you were inseparable. Coffee dates. Day trips. Music writing sessions. Art museum dates. Road trips.
But like all great, fantastical romances, it has an expiration date. Distance made you grow fonder but made your hearts break a bit more with each mile apart. You both agreed to take a break for a while until things slowed down or you were both on the same continents.
A month turned into three then turned into eight. By the fifteenth month, while you remained single and watched him be tied to other women, you wrote a song.
A song about a last time, a last chance, a do over. It was simple and melodic but full of such emotion and longing it brought tears to your eyes. Every word and note sang Ashton. Little tidbits of him were hidden inside and you knew he’d know it was about him. You fought with yourself not to release it but after you shared it with your team—and they all cried—the begged you to share it.
Because that’s what we all want, right? A do over with the one great love we lost?
It wasn’t long until you had another top hit, it was used as a trend on tiktok of people sharing their own lost love stories. You loved seeing the reaction but you were guilty of only being concerned by one specific person’s opinion.
Nearly a year and a half after your breakup, you were at an awards show again. You’d be singing your song. He was there and you were there and you felt his presence in the room as soon as you sat down. It was the first time you’d be performing the song and you had butterflies because: had he listened to it beforehand? Are you totally blindsiding him by performing a song written about him, for him?
You took the stage, closed your eyes and sang until your heart bled. Memories of him and you replayed in your mind. When you were finished, there was silence then an abrupt applause that made your body shake onstage.
When you were gathering yourself in the dressing room, there was a knock. You told your assistant you’d be out in a moment but then the door opened. I’m the mirror behind you, stood Ashton. His hair was longer but he looked handsome as ever in his suit.
“Is that what it felt like for you too at the end? Our last kiss?” He asked referencing a line in the song.
“Yes. It felt detached,” you admitted.
“Me too. It really was like kissing a stranger…” he rubbed at his chin in thought. “What if…we tried again?”
“Tried what?”
“Us. You. Me. But don’t kiss me like a stranger.” He shook his head and stepped closer to you. His familiar aftershave tickled your nose and made your mouth water.
“How should I kiss you?”
“Like you love me,” he cups your cheek and rubs his thumb over a tear, “cause I never stopped loving you.”
You meet in the middle; sparks and fireworks go off and then is calmed by the familiarity, the home you’ve been missing.

A/N: hi everyone!! this is my first fanfic that i’m posting on here and the first ever oneshot that i’ve written! as it’s coming up to christmas I decided to write a festive themed oneshot as my first post! i hope you enjoy :)
pairing: ashton x reader
summary: reader has worries about meeting ashton’s family in person for the first time
warnings: a small amount of anxiety
word count: 1k
✩ ✩ ✩
Usually, you were always excited for the Christmas season. Celebrating with loved ones and giving out gifts had always been your favourite thing to do.
This year was slightly different.
Ashton had suggested spending Christmas in Australia with his family this year. After many video calls had gone well with them, he assumed it wouldn’t be a big deal for you. Of course, it wasn’t at first. You were over the moon about getting to go to his home country for the first time.
With your flight there coming up in a few days time, you’d both been packing your bags in preparation. Including any gifts that had been bought for his family.
When you decided on taking a break from packing, Ashton offered to pick up some food. Expecting you to be ready to eat once he returned. Instead, he found you sitting out on his back porch, staring out at the darkening sky above.
He considered leaving you to your thoughts, thinking that you’d been okay all day. Something inside him told him that he couldn’t leave you alone. Something was wrong.
The back door opening caught your attention, glancing back to see Ashton walking outside. You sighed, leaning your head against the back of the chair you were sat on. He joined you, sitting down, waiting until you were ready to talk.
You cuddled into Ashton’s side, slipping your arms around his torso with your head against his shoulder. His arm draped around your shoulders.
“Everything okay, baby?” Ashton asked.
You shrugged, not sure how to tell him that you were freaking out about meeting his family in person for the first time.
“Is it about Australia?” He tried to answer for you if you didn’t want to speak. You nodded. “You’re worried for the flight? I know you’re concerned about how long it’ll be.”
“No, it’s not that,” you closed your eyes, trying to figure out how to explain your feelings. “I’m anxious… about meeting your family.”
“Oh,” he said. Not expecting you to say that. “You’ve been alright talking to them on our calls though, haven’t you?”
“This is different though, a lot different,” you sat up again, crossing your legs in front of you as you faced Ashton. “It’s not talking to them through a screen this time, I’ll be seeing your mum, your siblings, your grandparents, it’s a lot, Ash.”
With the way your voice almost broke at the end, Ashton couldn’t believe he hadn’t seen a hint of your anxiety to meet them sooner. You’d talked many times since agreeing, and none of those times had you expressed how worried you were becoming.
“You’re good at talking to people you haven’t met before,” Ashton tried to remind you. “You were fine talking with the guys the first time you met them.”
You looked away from Ashton after he said that, seeing the sun getting lower and lower. With how you were sat, Ashton moved to rest his hand on your knee, caressing his thumb back and fourth to comfort you.
“I’m not worried about talking to them,” you finally admitted. “I’m worried that they won’t like me.”
“Baby…” Ashton looked at you with a sad expression, the same way he always looked when you said things like that. “They like you already, they’ve seen the way you are on call, or when we’ve posted together.”
“How can you say that when they haven’t met me? Yes, we’ve talked, but over a video call.” You slouched in your seat, running one hand frustratedly through your hair. “I’m different in person than over the phone, you know that better than anyone. I’m quiet if someone calls me, but I can be the loudest person in the room when I hang out with our friends.”
“You’re my girlfriend, they’ll like you, baby.”
“just because I’m your girlfriend doesn’t mean they’ll like me.” You replied stubbornly.
Ashton figured he’d have to take a different approach to how you were thinking. He moved to face you more, patting his lap for you to sit on, which you could never say no to. Now sat comfortably with your hands in his, he continued talking.
“They haven’t chosen whether to like you or not depending on if you’re quiet in one setting or loud in another,” he placed his hands on your waist, rubbing up and down softly. “They liked you even before they saw your face. They liked you as soon as they realised how happy you make me. All they’re worried about is that you care for me and love me.”
You nodded, listening to what he said to you. What he was saying was true in every sense. Your parents were the same with him. As long as you’re happy, and as long as he takes care of you, they couldn’t not like him.
“and you do care for me. Every day you care for me, and love me, I feel it every second we’re together.” He cupped your cheek in his palm as you leaned into his grip. “They like you because I’ve told them about the real you, the you that I fell in love with, the you that I want to be with forever.”
“What if I mess up or say something wrong as soon as we get there?”
“I’ll be there to jump in,” He reassured. “If you get too anxious, I’ll start talking. If you aren’t sure what to say, I’ll talk for you. Until you’re more comfortable with my family I’m more than happy to do whatever you need to feel okay.”
You took a breath as you nodded at him. Feeling slightly better about this whole situation. All you needed was a little reassurance from Ashton, and that’s exactly what you got.
“I love you, you know that right?” You chuckled softly.
“And I love you,” Ashton leaned in, pressing a delicate kiss to your lips. “You’ll talk to me next time you have any worries?”
“Yea, I will.” You promised, looping your arms around his neck as he hugged you closer to him.
For now, everything had turned out okay in the end. You’d admitted how you felt, Ashton understood and didn’t mind at all. He was going to suggest going inside when you spoke again.
“What if your sister doesn’t like me?” You asked.
“Don’t give me that! You two are practically best friends already.” Ashton laughed. “Now, come on, we should eat before the food’s completely cold.”

Monday
10:45 am
My professors words were jumbled into incoherent mumbles, I bit my thumbnail relentlessly as my foot tapped the floor with anticipation. I had 15 minutes left of class before going in blind to my lunch session with Luke.
My eyes stared blankly ahead of me, every few moments glancing to the clock. The simple knowledge that Luke was present on campus turned my stomach. I had no recollection of what my professor had been speaking about, my mind had been swiped blank by the intimidating company of the blond close by.
I counted every second as the minutes passed, unconsciously ripping the skin from around my thumbnail with my teeth as I was growing more and more antsy in my seat. The classroom was filled with a soft hum of the air conditioner, accompanied with the occasional cough or sneeze from another student. I had no preparation for my meeting with Luke, as his demeanor and tone over text was difficult to read. I didn't know if this was going to be a regular, back to normal session, or something unexpected. My breath shook, I tried my best to calm my nerves as the class came to an end.
My professor offered Luke's tutoring to the class once more before dismissal, grabbing his own belongings for his lunch hour. I watched absentmindedly as students exited the classroom, my professor stopping at my seat.
"Luke seems to be running a bit late. You're free to go get yourself some lunch and come back," He began warmly, "Or you can wait here. Up to you." He smiled, giving my chair a light tap before making his way out of the classroom. My legs felt like jelly, I wasn't confident that I wouldn't tip right over if I stood up. I stayed glued in my seat, burning my eyes into the table in front of me awaiting Luke's arrival.
I bit my cheek, checking the time which was now 11:15. My anxieties began to turn to frustration, as I selfishly started to overthink he was late on purpose. I let out a heavy sigh, my tapping foot emitting a fast thumping sound. I knew that my frustration stemmed from the anxiety of suspense, but I stubbornly blamed it on his lack of time management. I swiftly whipped out my from my bag on the floor beside me, impulsively sending Luke an anxious text.
"Where are you? I'm waiting."
I sent the message with a huff, sliding my phone on the table. I leaned back in my chair with crossed arms, glaring at my phone as I sat silently in the empty room.
"Impatient?". I swung my head around abruptly as I heard the door creak open, a deep voice emerging from behind me. Luke entered the classroom leisurely, his face plastered with a smug smile and two coffees in hand.
"You're late." I muttered, turning back around in my chair with a straight face. I heard him chuckle from behind me, his large frame pulling up a chair beside mine. He set one iced coffee on the table in front of me, scooting it closer to my body. I glanced at him from the corner of my eye, he flashed me an apologetic smile.
"I could've been late with no coffee." He tilted his head. His playful demeanor uncontrollably making me crack a smile. I gave in, taking the coffee from Luke with a small giggle. I took a sip from the iced drink, Luke remembering my order perfectly. He let out a small sigh before speaking.
"I'm really sorry, Y/n." He spoke softly. I turned my head slightly to look at him, his eyes burning deeply into mine. "I should've explained myself better for you.". I looked down to my drink, toying with the straw as I took in his words.
"Yeah." I spoke quietly.
"You understand my dilemma, right?" He asked, moving his seat closer. "You know I'm not doing this to you 'cause I want to?". I glanced to him briefly before back down to my drink, his gaze was intimidating. I nodded slightly.
"It just sucks, Luke." I began, "You expect me to just come to tutoring all normal again? Like nothing?" I narrowed my eyes, turning my head to look at him. Luke sighed.
"I know. I'm sorry." He muttered, "You think it'll be easy for me to just be your tutor when I want every single part of you?" He urged. I looked away swiftly at words. "This isn't any easier for me than it is for you."
I felt his body move closer to mine, his knee brushing my outer thigh. His face was only inches from mine. We both could feel the tension in the air rising by the second, becoming desperate. I looked back up to him, his blue eyes looking into mine deeply. I wanted nothing more than for him to take me over completely. He placed a hand on my thigh gently as he spoke.
"You're all I want, Y/n." He spoke deeply. We were lost in each others gaze, our faces only inches apart. It felt as though there was a magnet pulling the two of us closer together, slowly.
Inch by inch, Luke inevitably connected our lips gently, his hand on my thigh tightening its grip. I shivered at the promiscuity of our kiss in the very accessible classroom. The kiss quickly got deeper, Luke moving his lips against mine passionately. He moved a hand up to the side of my face, our breathing slowly beginning to pick up. Luke shifted in his seat at the growing hard-on forming in his tight slacks, whimpering slightly into my mouth.
He pulled away quickly, looking at me with heavy breaths.
"We can't." He lazily shook his head, wiping his mouth with his thumb as he stood up from his seat swiftly. I stood up from mine after him, moving into him closer.
"Can't we?" I spoke softly as I looked up at him, just above a whisper while I trailed my hands down his chest, running my fingers alone his waistline. My hands shook and heart beat fast as I boldly chose my next actions, but the desperation over powered my rationality. Luke let out a shaky breath, looking to the unlocked door just a few feet away.
"Y/n..." He breathed deeply, watching my hands toy with his pants button and zipper.
"No one will be in here for another hour." I smiled, looking down at my hands. I swiftly undid the button on Luke's slacks, the zipper right after, before I dropped to my knees in front of him slowly.
"You're crazy. You're so fuckin' crazy." Luke repetitively rambled at a whisper, anxiously running his hands through his hair as he watched me in awe.
"Just be quiet." I giggled. I palmed his already hard member over his pants, emitting a groan from his lips before pulling his pants down just enough to reveal his shaft. I looked up at Luke through my eyelashes, meeting his eyes as I swiped my tongue under his tip once. He let out a heavy sigh, placing a hand on my head, stroking my hair. I opened my mouth wider, taking Luke inside my mouth fully. He brought the back of his hand up to his mouth, concealing a moan as he tossed his head back. His hand rested lazily on my head, gripping my hair slightly as I picked up a steady rhythm with my neck, taking Luke down my throat.
"Fuck, Y/n, you're so good." He whimpered, his mouth dropping to an "O". I brought a hand up, pumping and sucking Luke at the same time.
I watched him as I trembled above me, glancing to the door behind him every few seconds. Luke abruptly pulled himself out of my mouth, grabbing me from under my arms.
"Get up here." He growled. He swiftly lifted me from the ground, placing me on top of my desk facing him. Luke leaned in vigorously and connected our lips, bringing his hands down to my waistband and pulling my jeans down just to my knees. He effortlessly propped my feet up, leaving my knees against my chest and eager heat exposed. Both of us shook with adrenaline, trying to quickly get our deed done in the public classroom.
"Can you stay quiet for me, sweetheart?" He cooed, lining himself up with my folds. I wiggled my hips eagerly, his tip prodding against my hole. Wasting no time, Luke slipped himself inside of me, letting out a breath as my slick walls wrapped around him. Immediately, a loud squeal escaped my lips, making Luke's hand fly to my mouth to silence me. His other hand held my leg up underneath my thigh as he let out a chuckle.
"Quiet, doll. You don't wanna get caught, do you?" He spoke deeply, picking up his pace. I looked down to where Luke and I connected, my toes curled at the sigh of him finally inside of me. I let out another muffled whine into Luke's hands as he kept up his vigorous pounding. I quickly glanced up to the clock, then to the door behind Luke, still cautious of our surroundings in the open classroom. Luke noted my concerns, moving my face with his hand to look back at him.
"Don't worry about anyone else, doll. Focus on me." He spoke deeply, looking into my eyes as he made me focus solely on his member pumping in and out of me euphorically.
"You like being fucked where anyone can see?" Luke chuckled, moving in closer and connecting his forehead to mine, "You like being my slut, doll?". I nodded frantically, my whimpers continued to be muffled my Luke's hands.
"Fuck, doll, you're so tight around my cock." He groaned, watching himself pumping into me vigorously.
Luke quickly glanced to the clock, noting we had 10 minutes until the next class would begin to arrive.
"How fast can you cum for me, baby?" He cooed, bringing a hand up to my sensitive bud, rubbing fast circles into my clit. I dug my teeth into Luke's hands, looking up at him. My walls began to clench around his member, my climax rising quickly.
"That's a good girl. C'mon, doll, cum for me." He growled, keeping a steady rhythm with his thumb and pounding. I tossed my head back, shaking under Luke as I released about his throbbing member. My climax bringing him to his on my thigh quickly after.
With no time for catching a breath, Luke quickly retreated any tissue box he could find and cleaned his mess from my leg, assisting me in standing up and putting my pants back on. We silently slumped back into our chairs, breathing heavy as we collected our thoughts. Beads of sweat collected at Luke's forehead, his blond curls sticking to his skin. My hair laid messy down my back.
"That's not what I meant by we'll talk on Monday." Luke half joked, giving me a side eye. Giving us no time to debrief, the clock ticking to 12:15 and my clueless professor bursting through the door made us quickly adjust ourselves in our seats, trying to act nonchalant.
"Afternoon, Luke." He greeted with a smile, making his way to his desk. Luke smiled with a nod, his ability to act like he wasn't jack hammering me into the table just a couple minutes ago bewildered me. "You're real sweaty. Good session?". My professor raised his eyebrows, still completely clueless. Luke glanced to me briefly with wide eyes, then back to the professor.
"Definitely. Getting better every session." He smiled smugly, turning to look at me. My professors eyes flashed to me, my eyes now meeting his. I smiled with a nod at confirmation.
"That's right." I spoke. My professor nodded, placing his books onto his desk enthusiastically.
"That's great to hear, Y/n.". Luke and I shared a glance, unsure of our next move as I had a class I was now late to. Luke stood up with an uneasy sigh, meeting my eyes once more before turning to the door.
"Uhm. I'll see you tomorrow.". He gave me a look as if to say something which was unsaid. I watched as he exited the room, left to my own devices until I heard from him next, which was too left unknown.

Fang Duobing wakes up with the dawn on the five thousandth morning since his life fractured, then restarted, and there is silver in Di Feisheng's hair.
"Go back to sleep," he feels Di Feisheng rumble, where Fang Duobing's chest is pressed to his back. His hand doesn't pause, continuing to feel through the long river of Di Feisheng's hair. He can't help it, that it's still striking even after these years since the first hint of grey appeared. Early light glows through the window, glinting off the streak woven in through the dark strands. Vein of precious metal set in stone.
Di Feisheng has survived four decades of defiant existence in this world, and now he wears something proud to show for it.
"You're getting old," Fang Duobing says, and smiles into the back of Di Feisheng's neck. "What happened to rising with the sun to train every morning?"
"You and your sleeping in happened, you spoiled brat." The words are softened by the fact that Di Feisheng doesn't counter the hand Fang Duobing moves from his hair to his waist, only letting out a deep sigh. "And now you won't even let me do that."
"It's called having variation. Keeps you sharp."
"Keeps me tired."
"You'll start getting slow next if you settle into your ways like this, lao-lang."
"If you insist on calling me old, then you should have some respect for your elders," Di Feisheng declares, and now Fang Duobing can hear the glare in his voice. "Be quiet."
Fang Duobing has cheerfully never listened to this particular request, and isn't about to start now. "I show my respect for you nearly every day. Maybe you'd even call it appreciation." He lets his hand on Di Feisheng's waist drift lower, under the blanket thrown over both of them. "I could demonstrate again though, if you'd like?"
This time Di Feisheng catches him, gently dragging his hand away before Fang Duobing can reach for his trousers. "Later," he says, and the words are low enough to be a growl. "Go. Back. To. Sleep."
"Fine." Fang Duobing replaces his hand, arm reaching over Di Feisheng's torso instead. Di Feisheng's own hand stays curled overtop his, stilling as Fang Duobing settles down again behind him, sword calluses rough against his knuckles. "But I'll hold you to it."
It's impulse that causes Fang Duobing to brush at Di Feisheng's hair one last time, sweeping the silver aside to touch his lips to his neck.
Di Feisheng is, seemingly, by the fall of his breath and the curve of his body into Fang Duobing's, already asleep once more.

“hey, it’s y/n. sorry, i missed your call. leave a message after the beep. bye!”
“hey, uh, it’s me, just been thinking about everything tonight and i don’t know… i just miss you so much. call me when you can. bye.”
ashton removes the phone from his ear and ends the call, followed by a long, drawn-out sigh as he stares at your contact photo.
you were standing on the harbour bridge with him, kissing his cheek. it was taken on his first tour, when the band was opening for one direction, and he had just asked you to be his girlfriend, to which you of course said yes. he was your best friend and the person you had fallen in love with years before.
you've been by his side since the beginning of the band till today. you helped him throughout his most difficult times, and he did the same for you. at one point you considered him your soulmate and imagined spending the rest of your life by his side.
that was, until the parties.
it wasn't horrible at first. you'd join him at a few parties here and there. it was fun at first but then things got out of hand. ashton would party practically every night, and the parties eventually moved to his house, where you also lived. and it was well into the morning before the nights ended. so, you'd just hide out in your bedroom or at a friend's house.
it was exhausting. you could never get anything done because your house was always filled with strangers. and you couldn’t talk to ashton about it because he was always hungover and told you he’d talk to you later.
eventually, it got to the point where you just couldn’t take it anymore. so, you left him.
ashton was a disaster. every night, he'd be out partying or at a bar, hoping to drown out the haunting thoughts of you.
his partying addiction had gotten worse since you left. he couldn't even remember what he done the previous week since he had been partying so hard that it was killing him.
sometimes he’d call you when he was blackout drunk, professing undying love for you and how he regrets everything. other nights, when he isn’t so drunk, he’d still call you and apologize for the drunk calls.
he was spiraling down a deep dark alley, and if he didn’t fix himself now, he’d never see the light again.
ashton didn’t know why he continued to party and drink so much. but, he continued without thinking about the consequences. even if he knew how bad he was while under the influence.
some nights were worse than others.
one night it got very out of hand.
it was nearing five in the morning and ashton had one too many like he usually does but tonight was different. he was angry. angry at himself for letting you slip from his hands, angry he treated you like gum on the bottom of his shoe when instead of the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
ashton sat on his sofa staring at the wall with a red solo cup in hand, occasionally looking towards the door hoping you’d walk through and come back to him. but of course, you never did, and you wouldn’t because you don’t go to parties anymore.
luke sat with his head hung, rubbing his temples. “ashton, you’ve had too much. cmon man. just go to bed and we will clean up. it’s almost five a.m”
but ashton doesn’t say anything, he just sits there and down the rest of the liquid in his cup before tossing it to the floor
“yeah, no wonder y/n left you.” ashton hears michael say under his breath which was just enough to send ashton over the edge.
now it was getting out of hand, ashton was screaming his lungs out at michael while he just stood there with his hands up, signaling he didn’t want to fight ashton.
finally luke called the one person he knew who would help. you.
“hey, y/n, i’m sorry it’s so late…well early but ash is drunk, very drunk. can you come get him? he’s causing a scene.”
"what? oh, christ. yeah, I'll be there in ten," you said as you jumped out of bed, grabbed the nearest sweater and sweatpants, and ran out of your apartment.
your heart felt like it was beating out of your chest. the drive was a blur, trying to get there as quickly as possible in order to avoid another fight.
you knew most people would never do this for their ex, but you still loved him. you were still madly in love with him at the time. you listen to every message he's ever left on your phone.
your inbox was overflowing with them.
you heard every sincere confession, every drunken apology, and every sober apology.
of course, you still had feelings for him.
you never stopped.
“thank you for coming.” luke swung the door open letting you slip inside, then walked through the trashed house. “he’s in the living room” you looked through the kitchen archway to see where luke was pointing, and then you saw him.
you pushed the door open and walked across smashed cans and cups to his side. "ashton?" your voice was soft, as if you were unsure how he would react to your sudden appearance. maybe he'll lash out at you, or he'll remain mute and go away.
he raised his head, his gaze meeting yours. ashton comes to a halt from whatever nonsense he was doing, which was probably another drunken rage. was this really happening? he asks, as he stares at you in bewilderment. are you standing directly in front of him? was he dreaming?
"y/n?" he calls your name, and you question, "ash, what's going on?" and his eyes glaze over merely hearing your concern.he only blinks in response, trying to figure out the situation.
he can't believe you're at his party after swearing them off, and it's for HIM. not anywhere else but his house. he says "y/n" a few times before wrapping his arms around your stomach and tightening his grip. he couldn't let you go away again.
you just let it happen and hug him back as he sits on the sofa, saying, "hey, I'm here, it'll be okay" and attempting to calm him down. despite your best attempts, he pulls away, taking everything in.
you noticed luke about to say something, so you put your hand out to stop him, silently shaking your head.
you knew ashton was in pain, so you took him upstairs. "hey why don't we get you upstairs and into bed?" you gently held his arm, which calmed him down. he allowed you to take him upstairs and away from the party. you pull over to chat to one of the boys on the way, saying that you're going to take him to bed.
"I appreciate you calling. I'll get him settled and then return to assist you with the cleanup." you say to luke before leaving.
you help him upstairs, doing your best to keep him upright. as you led ashton to the bed, he was babbling incomprehensible words. and after completing your normal cleaning and care for him, you took a step back. anxiety and confusion consume your body. thank goodness, his luke called you.
You've read the articles about his constant parties and the drunken scenes he created. he was a mess. but it was how he was dealing with the break up. you, on the other hand, have stayed home every night, watching sad movies, weeping yourself to sleep most nights, losing your appetite, and creating excuses not to see sierra or crystal. Isolation was your only option for coping.
you begin to rub the bridge of your nose as you stand by the side of the bed, looking down at ashton, who was in and out of consciousness. your heart was beating, and you were at a loss for what to do. when ashton opens his eyes and sees this, he becomes upset once more. he’s sorry you had to go to another party for him, and he rubs his eyes before saying, "you shouldn't have come." "y’hate parties." "i had to," you say, dropping your hands. "i was worried." he could see it in your eyes that you were sincere. "you're scaring me, ash" you took a pause to attempt to calm yourself as tears began to pool in your eyes.
you try to get him to bed without confessing anything or saying anything you don't genuinely mean, knowing he's incredibly inebriated and emotional. "scaring you?" he took a deep breath as he watched you toss his shoes to the floor. "yes. you’re killing yourself. i’m not going to sit by and let you do that." maybe you were getting a little emotional right now, so you looked away to gather your thoughts and finish getting him ready for bed. if he chooses to sleep.
you left the room once he was settled for a bottle of water. he probably won't know you're gone. only luke and calum remained, clearing up the garbage from the party. they all glanced up at you, waiting for news, but you just shook your head and said nothing.
you returned, half-opening the bottle and placing it next to the bed. ashton is staring at you in awe. "you're always the one taking care of me and i never deserved it," he says. “you deserved so much better than me." you didn't let the fact that he was incredibly intoxicated and emotional get to you.
you lower your head, nibbling on the inside of your cheek. don’t let him hurt you like this, y/n. you kept thinking to yourself, he was intoxicated and didn't mean anything. you get up to leave, eager to go home and cry into your pillow about how much he misses you. he reached for your hand, carefully gripping it, and said, "stay with me." you freeze, tilt your head, and appear torn, so he adds "please? just tonight." while staring into your eyes, desperate.
so, you stayed. laying on the opposite side of ashton, you heard his breath steady assuming he was finally going to sleep. until you heard “i love you.” you had only hoped that if you were still he’d leave it alone and would just go to sleep. but he continued. “when i left that morning, i didn’t stop. i never did. you’re my whole world, and i hate the person i’ve become. i wanted to spend the rest of my life with you, but i screwed it up.” your heart was racing, picking at your nails you felt him shuffle next to you. “you were the best thing i’ve ever had and i let you go. ‘m sorry. you can hate me. i understand.” you waited a bit, but that was the last thing he said for the night.
you ended up leaving before he woke up because it was now daylight and you didn't want to be there when he did. you stood above him before leaving, and he looked so calm. naturally, you bowed down and kissed his brow softly before exiting the room. so, you were gone by eight a.m. you had a minor breakdown on the drive home, knowing that the love is still there, and seeing him so vulnerable makes your heart ache. but you kept reminding yourself that he was drunk. he most likely didn't mean half of what he stated.
right?
you had just finished your meeting the next day and were standing in your kitchen preparing a cup of coffee when you were stopped by a rhythmic knock. you walked over leaving the cup on your counter. as you answered the door, you saw ashton.
“hey.” he said, stuffing his hands into his jacket. you stepped back, then saying “why are you here?” ashton looked around, spitting a few framed pictures of the two of you which he thought was odd. he thought you hated him. he shrugged, “i just wanted to thank you for last night, and everything.” you sighed, “come in” you stepped to the side and let him enter, then closed the door behind him. “do you want some coffee?” he sat down on the sofa.
“sure.” he answered, looking around the room. you came back with a black mug and handed it to him, and took your seat across from him.
there was a moment of silence, the two of you would steal glances at each other but didn’t want to say anything, wondering how to approach the conversation waiting to be held.
his comment was abrupt. “i meant what i said, you know.” you looked up from your coffee, to meet with his eyes already looking at you. “what?” you blinked, placing the mug on the table. “last night. everything, i meant it. from me still loving you, to wanting to spend the rest of my life with you. i meant every word.” he was being sincere, he held eye contact as he spoke and didn’t break it once.
truthfully, you didn’t know what to say. the situation wasn’t ideal, and to be honest with yourself, you knew you still loved him. “ashton..” you finally spoke, followed by a long sigh and dropping your head into your hands.
“then why do you continue to do this? you’re drinking yourself to death, ash. how can i trust that you won’t do it all over again, even if i want to work this out?” ashton stands up from his spot and moves in front of you, on his knees as he holds your hands. "i get drunk to forget the color of your eyes and the way your hair falls and how soft your skin is and the way your smile makes me feel; but it seems like the alcohol can't change my memory of you." he had been waiting to tell you this for the longest, “i do it because it’s the only way i know how to cope and i know it isn’t the best way, but it’s all i know.”
ashton runs his thumb over your knuckles. you look down at his calloused hands feeling your lip quiver “and if that isn’t enough just tell me, and i’ll leave for good.”
you shake your head letting the tears fall, “ash..i just want you to stop..all this drinking isn’t good for you, i can’t just let that happen.” you say, and he nods. “i know, i know.” he hushes your tears, raising up to hug you. “i’ll do better, i promise.” he says into your hair while wiping your tears.
“how can i trust you?” you ask
“because, i love you. and i’ll be damned if i lose you again.”

you don’t go to parties || calum hood
Tumblr media Tumblr media
word count: 2.3k+
warnings: ALCOHOL!!!! pls continue with caution if triggering. + swearing, and a fuck ton of angst. like a stupid amount. calum x she/her reader, lowercase intended!
a/n: guess what my fav song off 5sos5 is lol. i am so in love with this album so i quickly wrote this up xoxo
i still think about the times we were heavy
racehorse trippin' on the dirt that you got on me
vultures spinnin' up above of what's left of me
we go stupid every night, what a tragedy
“you are not about to take another shot,” calum’s slurred voice laughs at the girl beside him, as she attempts to make a clean pour into the small glass in front of her. needless to say, she didn’t do such a good job. that’s what happens when you’re one too many drinks in.
“you smoked four joints outside. i’m allowed to take as many shots as i want!” she responds, tilting her head back as the liquid runs down her throat, resulting in a sour face from y/n as she reaches for the closest bottle of coke.
a red, puffy eyed calum stumbles closer towards y/n and embraces her in a hug, kissing her temple. “we do this too much, don’t we?” he asks, as he sways their bodies back and forth.
“yeah, way too much..” she trails off, as the two get lost in the moment of each other, standing in the middle of the overcrowded kitchen.
the music is loud, the room is hot, there’s too many people, and there’s too many coloured lights flashing everywhere.
but calum and y/n didn’t care. staring into each others eyes with the widest grins plastered across their faces, they both knew that they wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
when you’re young, the number one rule you’re always told is have fun, you’re never gonna get these years back.
the pair made sure to do everything possible to make sure they wouldn’t regret it.
but being young doesn’t last forever.
in the blink of an eye, life changes and the real world is in front of you.
no more college parties getting absolutely shitfaced every weekend. no more spontaneous adventures in the middle of the night because you have nothing else to do. no more doing things that you shouldn’t be doing. no more distractions.
no more young love.
calum and y/n couldn’t have seen it coming at all.
but when you’re having as much fun as them two, who would’ve?
calum realized that school wasn’t for him, and started pursuing a music career with him and his friends that he met in college, who felt the same way as he did.
y/n on the other hand, was determined to earn her degree and make her family proud.
despite their differences, they had no doubts about keeping each other around. they loved one another, and that’s what truly matters, right?
so calum didn’t think too much of it when he started going to parties alone, when y/n declined because of her loads of homework piling up on top of another.
he always made sure to come back to her at the end of the night, holding her tight while she slept, burnt out from the thousands of words she read just hours before he came back to her dorm — he had practically moved in, although he wasn’t even in school anymore.
and it worked for them.
until they got older.
still so in love, they managed to get a place together after y/n graduated. and while y/n was out and about hunting for jobs, calum was in the studio with his band.
and whenever calum was in the studio with his band, it led to a party at the end of it. and he always made sure that his y/n was on his hip, as they drank and danced the night away together.
“they’re so cute,” luke chuckled as michael was pouring himself another drink, as they watched the two hold each other as they drunkenly sang the words to some old chris brown r&b love song — of course calum knew every word.
michael turns his head to the couple standing in the middle of the living room, and even though there’s a countless amount of people beside them, it feels like they’re the only two people in the room. “they’re forever. no doubt about it.” michael responds to the blonde boy sitting next to him, a little smile curved on his face.
i’m still here in the darkness
back where we started
you made me a heartless monster
i’m caught up in distractions
fatal attractions
i’m starting to come undone
it was so good.
it was so good, until it wasn’t.
when y/n started working full time, calum and his band still had nothing else to do. i mean, an album release and a world tour just before, you need some sort of a break.
y/n started working 9-5’s and calum was still showing up to functions without his plus one. one party turned into fifty parties, and next thing you know, it’s a surprise it calum makes it home before y/n goes to bed. y/n was so busy, she couldn’t even tell that calum had been going out so frequently until her first day off rolled around the corner.
and there she was, sitting in the middle of their shared apartment, watching tv and waiting for her boyfriend to come home.
she knew that she should go to bed; she had work the next day. but she’s never spent a day without at least knowing where he was. at least that’s what she thought.
calum rolls in around 3:00 am, stumbling into their home and kicking off his shoes. y/n rushes towards him to make sure he doesn’t fall, her arms wrapping around his body as he clutches onto her shoulders. “baby, you’re awake. it’s so late!” he slurs, kissing her on the cheek.
“i was waiting for you,” she whispers in response, assisting him in going upstairs. “does this happen every night?”
“only the nights you don’t come with me.”
“so… every night.”
calum’s never felt more pain in his life. yeah, he’s felt like shit when he’s throwing up outside some random person’s backyard, or when he loses his balance and falls face first into the pavement, but nothing could’ve prepared him for the moment that y/n walked out on him.
coincidentally, calum had no intentions of staying out past his studio session today. walking into their abode before midnight was now a rare occurrence, and it felt refreshing to calum as he drives home, the sky painted a pink and orange shade as the sun started to go down.
walking into his apartment and being greeted by duke — which hadn’t happened in quite a minute — the house was quiet.
i mean, when calum goes home, it’s always quiet. y/n’s always sleeping. but this silence felt eerie. from what calum was aware of, y/n had always liked to keep some music on throughout the house while she did her activities — work, cooking, showering, anything.
“y’know where mama is, duke?” calum asks the little dog in front of him, getting up from his knees and making his way up the stairs, duke following behind him as he opens the door to their bedroom.
there y/n is, sitting at her desk, with her laptop and various notebooks spread out. but her laptop isn’t turned on, and it doesn’t look like she’s doing anything. she’s just sitting there.
walking towards his girlfriend, he takes notice of a suitcase placed beside her desk, he dismisses it, and greets her with a kiss on the cheek. “hey baby, how’s your day been?”
she turns her chair to face him, getting a clear look of him before she starts to speak. “you’re here early.”
“yeah, nothing to do after the sesh today.”
“hey calum, let me ask you something.”
calum should’ve known something was off the moment she called him by his first name.
“yeah, what’s up?” he responds, throwing himself onto the bed and getting into a comfy position.
“when was the last time you actually bothered to have a conversation with me?”
“what?” he confusedly asked in response. “where is this coming from? i literally had one with you yesterday morning.”
“you said good morning to me, and proceeded to tell me that you were going to be home late. that’s not a conversation. in fact, that’s all you’ve been saying to me for the past four months.”
it's safe to say that y/n wasn't in the picture anymore.
after countless of apologies and promises from calum's side, she knew what was best for her – she knew that he was too late. so a few days after what y/n felt like the hardest, but at the same time, easiest breakup that she'd ever have to do, she gathered all her things. from the bedroom, to the bedroom, to the fucking kitchen, and left.
the fact that breaking up with him felt easy broke her heart in two.
she loved him. she loved him so fucking much. and he let her down. he disappointed her to a depth she would've never thought he would reach.
so she said her goodbyes to the fluffy little dog following her, kissing his soft head and whispering, "take care of him, okay?" with duke barking in response as she made her way towards the front door.
"goodbye, cal."
when calum came home to dead silence, he knew what had happened. doesn't mean he liked it, though.
rushing up the stairs to see an empty half of a bedroom and a cleaner, less product filled bathroom, he knew what she had done.
and there's nobody else to blame but himself.
and now it’s 5 am clinging to my couch
and everyone i ever knew is standing in my house
oh, i’m wondering who i’m looking for
cause you don’t go to parties anymore
i got the last five years running out my mouth
always stay too late, i should kick me out
oh, i'm wondering who i'm looking for
cause you don't go to parties anymore
describing calum as a fucking wreck was an understatement. all that man did was party, after all. but this was getting out of hand.
luke, ashton, michael, and even their fucking partners tried talking to calum to try and get him out of this excessive phase. "there's better ways to handle this," michael would tell calum when he catches him in a sober state.
"she's gone because this was all i did," calum would respond. "i have no reason to stop now."
and everyday, you would catch calum at some random los angeles party. it could be a distant mutuals, a random person's, or even his own.
sometimes it would be his own house a little too much – he couldn't handle the loneliness.
which explains calum's extreme lack of sobriety in his backyard, going on a tangent about the mistakes he's made.
the poor, unlucky guy taking a seat next to calum on the couch was not prepared for calum's behaviour.
"is she here?"
"who's here?"
"y/n, my ex."
"sorry dude. don't think so."
"we were together for five fucking years. five years and i fucked it all up. it's all my fault, and i'm never gonna get her back. i miss her so much, i'm never gonna be the same without her," calum pours his heart out to the complete stranger sat beside him, taking another swig from the bottle of tequila he was holding.
the backyard is filled with so many people, and it's almost a challenge to walk around, yet his eyes are still looking for the girl that got away, while he continues to talk about her.
luke walks over to the couch that calum and the unfamiliar person are seated on. "hey, is he bothering you?" luke asks, earning a chuckle from the guy. "nah, at least not yet. he's just been.. talking about his ex."
luke sighs, rubbing his forehead. "yeah man, i'm sorry you had to hear all that. he's been like this for way too long now, doing the same shit every night. i've had to drag him out of people's houses in the middle of the night a couple times 'cause he had no other way home."
"damn.. she really did a number on him, huh?" stranger responds, luke nodding. "i understand why she left, and i think he does too," he points to calum. "he's just having a hard time accepting it."
calum turns towards both boys sitting beside him with an upset expression plastered all over his face. "of course i'm having a hard time accepting it! it's all my fault! i drove away the only girl i'd ever been in love with and i'll never be able to get her back!" the drunk, heartbroken boy explains, finishing the last of his bottle before kicking it onto the ground, away from him.
as the early morning creeped up and his house got more and more empty, the three boys decided to stay back and help him clean up, knowing that the host himself won't be able to.
"feels like we've been cleaning forever." luke mindlessly says, checking the time. "holy shit. 5 am."
"we need to do something about this, he can't keep doing this to himself." ashton frustratedly stats, picking up what felt like the 500th solo cup on the ground.
"what's it gonna take for him to listen? we've tried so hard." michael says, gathering all the empty bottles of alcohol and throwing them into his recycling bin.
"we all know who he's gonna listen to. but i doubt that she'll ever want to speak to him again."
as the trio take a look at the man currently sprawled against the now empty couch, he begisn to stir, and slowly opens his eyes.
"this," ashton points to the situation in his backyard, "needs to fucking stop. i don't know how many times we have to tell you this."
"i know man, i know. i'm sorry. thank you for helping me clean." calum sheepishly says, now feeling embarrassed at his three best friends stand in front of him in disappointment.
"did, did she show?" calum speaks up again, the tiniest glimmer of hope laced in his voice.
"no. you should know this. she doesn't go to parties anymore."

My masterlist // taglist in bio!
Tumblr media
There is a moment in movies where everything just seems to go in slow motion. The main character would look around the crowded room, smiling as they see their friends laugh, drink, chat… they reflect on their life, how lucky they are to be in that exact moment to just enjoy everything that happens around them, even if they exclude themselves for a second.
But then, the smile they held would start to fade. Maybe they realized that the moment is already gone, or maybe they saw something they shouldn’t have that broke their hearts into a million pieces. You were in the second part of that predicament.
For a moment, you were that main character as you looked around the room where everything seemed to stop. Your friends were all laughing, sitting on the couch with a drink in hand, chatting about the recent events that led you all there. Others were standing near the kitchen, making drinks as their conversation became deeper with strangers they just met. And you? You were standing in the middle of it all, feeling proud that the party was a total success.
It wasn’t your party, though, it never really was. You are much happier to celebrate others than yourself. And you knew that no one else deserved to be more celebrated than Ashton.
The planning started weeks ago, an impulsive call to Calum
“On a scale of one to ten, how badly would it be to give Ash a surprise party?”
He answered ten. He knew his friend was not very fond of surprises “But if you’re the one throwing the party, it’ll become a 3. You know he has a weakness for you”
It started as a small get-together, just your closest friends gathered in one of the cabins in the desert he loved so much. A getaway to the place that seemed to make him the happiest as of recently. But fifteen guests soon turned into thirty and then into fifty… Suddenly, Ashton was opening the door to the unexpected shout of “Surprise!” from people he knew all his life and people he met just once.
He didn’t seem mad, though. The first thing he did when he saw you was wrap you in a warm hug, giggling into your ear as he kissed your cheek and whispered a small “Thank you” before other people swept him away. And if his smile was anything to go by, you knew he was just as excited as you.
And, as the party continued to go smoothly, you knew you’ve won the best friend award of the season.
But you weren’t just a best friend, were you?
The intrusive thoughts took a hold of you again. It was easy to forget all of it while you were in the middle of a conversation with a stranger, or when you were doing shots with Michael and Luke in the kitchen trying to prove who could hold the poker face longer. But it was in the rare moments where you were standing alone, looking from the outside, that everything fell upon you.
It was the empty feeling in your heart that came first as you looked for Ashton in the crowd, not being able to find him at first glance. It’s not like you were attached to the hip either, you both respected your space and allowed yourselves to evolve in different aspects of life.
“Like a cat, you know?” He said one day.
“Ash, you’re allergic to cats” You reminded him, lifting your gaze from the book you were reading.
“But I respect them!” He giggled, poking your leg as he sat next to you on the couch “They do their thing, they let you do yours. But in the end, the bond is still there, even stronger. You and me? We’re like cats”
You put that as one of the top ten weirdest things Ashton has ever told you on a Friday afternoon, but the more you thought about it, the more sense it made.
But lately, you’ve been feeling as if something was missing if he wasn’t there. Or if for some weird reason he didn’t text or call you throughout the day. His presence has been such a constant in your life ever since you met years ago and it felt… wrong. It felt wrong not to have him around as much lately.
Yes, he was busy. Yes, you understood why. But you missed him more than a friend would.
But you weren’t just a best friend, were you?
There it was again. The question that wouldn’t let you sleep for more than a few hours before popping in your head. The scene seemed to change as you found yourself sitting on one of the couches, normality playing its act on your skin as you remembered you had to laugh about something Calum said.
A group of lively people was gathered around the coffee table. Red cups and empty cans served as the decoration while Calum continued his story next to you, always moving his arms to make his point across. You giggled absentmindedly as you got lost in your drink, flattering your eyes across the couch to the set of armchairs.
Ashton raised his eyebrow, asking in the middle of a laugh if everything was okay. You nodded slightly, smiling reassurance at him. He didn’t believe you, of course, but now wasn’t the time to ask. So he fell back into the conversation as if that small glimpse of worry never happened.
You, however, kept staring. His relaxed pose, button-down showing his chest, curls framing his face perfectly with his new haircut, the sound of his laughter that tinted his cheeks the softest shades of pink. It was impossible to keep your eyes from such a sight. As if he was the sun and you were the sunflower that chased for him, always looking with admiration for such a powerful energy.
The same feeling in your stomach grew stronger. The same feeling you were carrying for more nights than you would like to admit.
“He cares for you,” Said Calum a few moments later when you were both standing in the kitchen, not really remembering how you got there in the first place “He’s just not great at showing it”
The night found one of your small smiles again. Eyes diverting toward the bowl of snacks that lay there, you nodded as you grabbed a few. You didn’t know where this sudden sadness came from, but it was clear that in the party filled with people, you were the one miserable soul.
“Hey,” Calum interjected again, pulling you out of your thoughts as his hand came to cover yours over the table “I mean it, Y/N. I’ve never seen him look at someone like that, only you”
“Like what?”
“Like you gave him the world in the palm of your hand”
As if sensing someone was looking, you raised your head and looked across the room. Hazel eyes staring back, a flash of hurt crossing his expression as his gaze rests on your hand occupied with someone else's. Or maybe that was what it seemed, for he retreated his eyes immediately, not fast enough to notice how Calum pulled his hand away to give your shoulder a gentle pat.
“He’ll come around,”
“That’s what I’m afraid of” But he didn’t hear you. No one did. Sometimes you wonder if you said that out loud or just let your semblance do the talking for you.
Calum shook his head “C’mon,” He said, pulling on your hand “You need new things to think about”
Anything. Think of anything other than him. Think of anything but the way his hand feels intertwined with yours or the way the slow rising of his chest lures you to sleep more than once. Think of anything but the way his eyes crinkle when he smiles or the way he fidgets with his hands when he’s nervous. Think about the way his hugs feel, or how he always seems to know what you’re thinking before you even know it yourself. Think about the soft strings of his guitar as he sings your favorite song, accompanying your voice in a sweet melody that would belong only to the two of you. Think about how much you love him and how it never feels like enough. Think about how you will always love him, even when he doesn’t feel the same. Even when he was just your best-
But you weren’t just best friends, were you?
The world stopped again, but you were moving normally. The party around you grew louder as the breaking of your heart became stronger.
You watched as everyone just stopped. Freezing in place as you moved swiftly through them, looking for the one that could make everything normal again. You walked around, careful not to step on anyone’s toes or to trip on an empty beer can. Your eyes examined every single person there, enjoying their happiness and careless souls. Couldn’t they feel the same as you? Couldn’t they see how broken you were?
No, of course not. You were selfish just to think about that. Not everything is about you nor do they have to be aware of your emotional state. It was a stupid idea anyway, to think that they would care as much as he would. But it was unfair as well. It was unfair to the others how the host of this party couldn’t even pull on a happy face. It was not their fault but yours. And you knew that. You knew these moments might be the last, you should’ve taken a picture. At least you would remember their smiles.
The room even in slow motion seemed to be never-ending. Stretching itself as you found your way toward confetti-filled floors, looking over everyone’s shoulder to find him. Maybe if you found him- maybe it’ll be okay again.
But the room didn’t want you to find him. That much was obvious. You should’ve listened. Should’ve retreated. Should’ve gone back to the party and looked the other way.
Anything to avoid the sight of the man you love hugging another person on his lap. Anything to avoid looking at the way his eyes seemed to shine brighter. Anything to avoid the broken sigh that escaped your lips when you saw him kiss her neck.
The world kept going but yours just stopped. Silently and broken, like the steps you traced back. Like the heart that once belonged to a best friend, even if it wanted to be more.
But you weren’t just a best friend, were you?
The night was cold, even more so in the middle of the desert in July, but you didn’t mind. You welcomed the cold as you sat down on the steps that led to the patio. Breathing deeply as your closed eyes turn to the sky. How did you end up here? At what moment did it become too much?
You couldn’t pinpoint the time and place where you fell in love with him. It just happened. One day you woke up and you knew he’d be the man who’d break your heart. And you let it happen. You knew it would happen. So why does it hurt so much?
“I knew I’d find you here,”
You heard his voice before you felt his warmth next to you. Silk shirt graced your bare arms as he sat to your right. You kept your eyes on the sky.
“You were always a sucker for stars” He chuckled.
“No moon tonight, though,” You said, smiling at the sound of his voice.
“What do you think it means?”
“That there can only be one Astro illuminating the night”
You turned to him with a smile, nudging him teasingly as his pout became a giggle. Eyes filled with fondness as he scrunched his nose, you doing the same in return.
“I missed you tonight,” He said, eyes drifting back to the dark sky
“I never left,”
“You know what I mean” You did.
“You didn’t seem to miss me much,”
“Then look again,”
But you didn’t. You couldn’t.
“Look!” He said, one arm pointing at the sky “A shooting star!” The childlike innocence made you smile “I haven’t seen one in years”
“Are you going to make a wish?”
“I’d rather give my wish to you,” Ashton said softly, turning to you.
You looked at him with parted lips but soon smiled as you closed your eyes and wished.
When you opened them again, you saw him smiling widely at you.
“What’d you wish for?”
“For something I can’t have”
“Aw, c’mon! You can’t know that!” He laughed, but one look at you made his laughter die down. He sighed as he smiled softly “But you do know it, don’t you?”
“I do,”
“Because you never made that wish in the first place”
“I missed the star the first time.” You said “My eyes were closed and my head was fuzzy. And-”
“And I wasn’t here to point it out” Ashton continued, eyes never leaving yours “I’m still at the party”
“You could’ve been anywhere, I wouldn’t know”
“And what if I tell you I was at the door? Looking over at you hoping you’d turn back”
“But I didn’t turn back,” You said, standing up and walking toward the patio. Ashton followed closely “In fact, I never came back to the party after that. I couldn’t. Not when you-”
The silence enveloped the two of you. Stars shining bright as the stillness of the night let time pass by.
“Where are you?” He asked.
“Not where I’m supposed to be,” You said “I keep coming back here, hoping it would be different”
“But it can’t be different. It already happened”
You nodded “And where are you, right now?”
“Not where I want to be” He kept walking with you, going nowhere “Where were you when I called the next day?”
“I ignored your calls for the following weeks. I wanted you to hate me, to make it easier”
“I could never hate you, even if I tried” He smiled “And when I came into your house? Banging on the doors and calling your name?”
“I pretended I wasn’t there”
“I looked for you,”
“I wasn’t ready to be found and face the music”
“But it was our music, our song, our melody…” He smiled sadly “It was us”
“Guess I was scared,” You sighed “I wasn’t ready for a broken heart, and you-”
“I’m not real, Y/N. I can’t give you an answer you think you know”
“I should’ve told you then”
“What difference would it make?”
“I guess we will never know,” You said, looking back at the cabin and not finding it through the dark “I only know that-”
“Yes,” Ashton smiled “We were always more than best friends”

4:00 AM. That’s what the clock said when you woke up.
It was the same dream, the same conversation. The same emptiness on your bed.
A year has passed, or at least that’s what you think. Time became irrelevant when the world became in slow motion now that there was no one to make it turn again.
A sigh escaped your lips as your hands looked for your phone. Maybe a mindless scroll would lure you back to sleep. Maybe into another dream.
Yet, a message that wasn’t there suddenly caught your eye.
Ash:
[4:01]: I had a dream about you
[4:01]: I know you’ll probably ignore this but… It was the best dream I had in a while.
[4:02]: Good night, Y/N.
Y/N:
[4:04]: Maybe it was a shooting star.
And five seconds later, a call flashes through your screen.
“Hello?” You said, curling the sheets with your hands.
“What would you wish on a shooting star?” He asked
“For something I can’t have”

You had a terrible sleep - you'd just woken up and you already felt dreadful. Luke had spent the whole night hogging the blankets and pressing his icy feet against your legs - no matter how far you moved away, they seemed to drift back to you.
He fell asleep a lot quicker than you, and the first time he tugged the blankets off of you, you took them back rather easily. But the more it happened, the harder it was to get any for yourself.
After multiple failed hours of sleep, you were sick of it. You went down stairs and stole the two blankets off the sofa and brought them back to bed. You wrapped them around you, folding the corners into your chest so Luke had no way of stealing it. And you finally managed to sleep.
You woke up an hour later to your whole body frozen. Luke had wrapped himself in both the duvet and the blankets, leaving one leg stuck out which happened to be pressed against yours. He was snoring incredibly loudly which irritated you more and more. You began trying to lift just one of the blankets away from him to no avail. He was wrapped in them so tightly; you didn't understand how he wasn't overheating.
After that, you couldn't sleep whatsoever. You gone and borrowed one of Luke's hoodies, and a pair of his joggers, from his wardrobe yet the cold was still numbing. You'd be able to slip your feet and a small portion of one of your legs under the duvet which gave you a little comfort until Luke's legs found them and froze them again. He wasn't ill so you had no idea how he could feel so cold.
You tricked yourself into falling asleep not long later but it felt like minutes until Luke was waking you up again. He'd wanted to get up early because he knew this weekend, you'd promised each other to spend as much time with the other as possible. However, you made him swear he wouldn't get you up too early as you'd never been much of a morning person.
He'd woken you up rather nicely, shaking you a little, then pressing kisses all around your face. As sweet as that was, you were having none of it - you turned around and spoke, "piss off."
Luke was slightly taken aback, but figured you'd just had a bad sleep. He tried to latch onto your waist and wrap his arms around you but you just pushed him off and grabbed the duvet. If you couldn't sleep last night, you were going to make it up now and not let Luke distract you.
"You okay, angel? Did you not sleep okay?" His hand was on your head, trying to comfort you without annoying you.
As much as you liked talking to him, you'd wake yourself up and have no chance at sleeping again if you did. You tried to murmur something back - with was unintelligible to both you and Luke. Instead, you answered him again, "no, let me sleep."
Luke could tell you were not happy and needed this so he just carried on trying to comfort you. Nothing was working; you still couldn't sleep and had spent the last five minutes wriggling around trying to find a comfy position.
You felt Luke move away from behind you and figured he must've been bothered by the squirming around. Instead he gently flipped you around and placed your head on his chest.
As usual, he knew exactly what you needed and you felt a lot more comfortable, "you're so cute when you're irritable and sleepy."
You chose to ignore him, "you're so warm. How are you so warm? You were so cold earlier."
You felt him chuckle against you, pausing to wrap his arms more tightly around you. You moved your hands under his shirt, letting them rest on his stomach and steal his heat.
"Are you wearing my clothes? I swear you weren't wearing them when we went to bed." He moved his hands to your shoulders, gently massaging them, keeping you relaxed.
"You spent the whole night hogging the blankets and duvet, snoring in my ear, and pressing your frozen feet into me, I think this is the least you can do."
He kept one hand on your shoulders whilst letting the other one move up and down your back. "m'not complaining, you look very pretty in my clothes. And I'm sorry about that, angel, I didn't mean to, let me make it up now, yeah?"
You nodded, trying to relax yourself again, cuddling into him more and more. Luke hadn't once removed his eyes from you. He was looking down at you fondly the whole time, trying his best to make sure you're okay. He was grinning slightly at the sight of you - he was so grateful to wake up with someone like you and wanted you to spend every moment tucked in his arms.
"Will you sing to me, Lu? Anything you'd like."
He gripped you tighter, moving one of his hands to intertwine with yours. He pressed a kiss to it, then placed another on your head, pausing for a moment to remember it, "of course i will."
You were mostly asleep already, so when he began to sing something you didn't recognise, but had a feeling Luke wrote, you fell asleep almost instantly, His voice was so soothing you wanted to listen to it forever. No matter how hard you wanted to keep listening, you fell asleep, the last thing you remember being another kiss to your face, an, "I love you, sweetheart," and the end of the song.

"Y/n, who said you could look so sexy tonight?" My best friend sitting on an adjacent couch teased playfully. She had invited me to a Halloween party she was hosting, encouraging me to bring Luke as well. Unsure of a creative outfit for the last minute plans, I had thrown together the classic cat costume, as most of clothing was black. I did the best I could, throwing on a black corset top, with black shorts. Improvising my face with black eyeliner for whiskers and a nose.
I giggled at my friends words, throwing her energy back to her.
"If you wanna kiss you just have to ask." I rolled my eyes dramatically. Our flirtatious banter was nothing new and nothing more than playful, though could be misleading to anyone not in the loop.
Music pumped loudly, as well as incoherent voices of other party goers. I glanced to Luke beside me, who was slumped back into the couch, briefly looking at me through his eyebrows. I quickly noted his odd behavior before brushing it off, continuing to my conversation with my friends.
"I'm gonna go get another drink. Do you want something?" I spoke loudly over the music to the 3 girls in front of me. I quickly took their drink orders before standing up and walking past my friends, my rear side eye level to them. I felt a quick smack against my lower half as I began to walk away, making me turn around with an open jaw before laughing.
"Bitch." I scoffed playfully. I saw Luke from the corner of my eye stand up swiftly, making his way to the other side of the room. I bit my cheek as I went to retrieve the drinks, now beginning to understand the reason for Luke's mood.
Returning to the couch, Luke no where to be seen, I handed my friends their drinks as I spoke.
"I'll be right back." I brushed off nonchalantly, heading in the same direction I saw Luke storm off.
I ducked and weaved through bodies and unfamiliar faces, scanning the rooms as I searched for Luke. I headed back into the kitchen, finding him standing against the counter, looking down at his drink.
I immediately noted his serious expression, my nerves began to rise. Letting out a deep breath, I paced my way towards Luke, his eyes staying glued to his drink the whole time.
I looked up at him once I reached the counter, picking my fingers anxiously. He looked at me once deeply before leaning inti my ear to speak.
"We're going home." He spoke lowly with a deep tone. I shivered at his voice against my skin, I was thankful for our departure—as we've been here for 3 hours—, yet my stomach turned for I was unsure of what I was going home to.
I looked back up to him, thinking frantically for my words.
"I- I'll go say bye-"
"No." He cut me off, "Let's go." He motioned with his head. Though Luke's intimidating behavior shook me to my core, I couldn't help but let my need for him grow by the second. His dominate energy took my breath as we swiftly made our way through the house, avoiding my friends, and out of the front door.
The car ride was deafeningly silent, what would normally be a 10 minute drive felt like an hour. Luke's eyes stayed glued on the road in front of him, making me shift nervously in my seat. My eyes shifted to his hands which were furiously gripping the steering wheel, his knuckles turning white. I glanced to his face, his jaw clenched tightly, every few a seconds his eye would twitch ever so slightly. I settled into my seat with a deep sigh, my body filled with both fear and excitement.
Arriving to our house silently, I dropped my bag and kicked off my shoes at the entrance, heading to our room to change. I heard the heavy footsteps of Luke entering our room behind me as I approached our bathroom, Immediately reaching for the makeup wipes on the counter.
The silence around me was suspicious, I cautiously wiped off the whiskers and nose from my face, listening carefully to the room beside me. I tossed the dirty wipes into the trash, exiting the bathroom to Luke sitting on the edge of the bed, making me stop in my tracks. He sat with his hands clasped, elbows resting on his knees. His jaw clenched tightly as he turned his head to look at me.
"You think your friends are funny?" He spoke smugly, tilting his head. I took in a shaky breath, thinking of my next words carefully. He slowly began to stand up as I stuttered.
"Th-That's just how w-we talk," I stumbled over my words, Luke's tall frame making his way towards me slowly. I chill ran through me at his intimidating size, finding myself under his spell.
"Yeah?" He mocked, bringing his hands around me down to my barely covered rear, looking down at me, "They just talk by putting their hands all over you?" He growled, groping roughly. I impulsively placed my hands on Luke's ribs as he squeezed me tightly, his touch arousing me more and more by the second. I looked into his eyes deeply.
"Luke." I breathed softly, unable to argue my case, as well as my mind becoming numb to Luke's dominance, wanting him to take me over completely.
"Who's ass is this?" He spoke deeply, squeezing me roughly once more.
"Yours." I spoke just above a whisper, the wetness pooling in my underwear fogged my mind. Without warning, Luke swiftly pushed me to the side and against the wall by my hips, earning a light gasp from me.
"You think it's okay to let everyone put their hands on you?" He growled into my ear, grabbing my wrists with a hand and placing them above my head. My breath hitched as he roughly pushed his leg between mine, his thigh pressing against my eager heat. I shook my head quickly, too flustered to find my voice.
"Use your words." He spoke deeply, pushing his thigh harder between my legs. I rolled my head onto the side of his, letting out a small whine of desperation.
"No. I don't." I shook my head, speaking between small breaths. Luke chuckled.
"Y'get all pretty, get all flirty with your friends..." Luke spoke slowly, trailing a patient hand down my chest and torso leisurely. He effortlessly undid the button of my shorts, along with the zipper. My hips bucked slightly at his touch so close to where I needed him.
"You like getting me angry?" He tilted his head, sliding a hand under my waistband, hovering two fingers over my slit.
"N-No." I whimpered, squirming under his touch. I throbbed and ached desperately as Luke's fingers would gently caress my folds every few seconds. I whined at Luke's painfully intentional string of questions as he taunted my heat.
"Are you my good girl?" He growled as he swiftly pushed two fingers into my dripping hole, making me gasp and buckle at my knees as I nodded frantically. He slowly pulled out and pushed back in before speaking.
"Words, doll." He smirked.
"Yes..Luke. I'm y-your good girl." I whimpered between breaths as he pumped two fingers in and out of me at an intentionally agonizing pace.
A smug look plastered his face as he pulled his fingers out abruptly, emitting a whine from me. He released his grip from my wrists, taking a step back.
"On your knees." He spoke bluntly, motioning with his head. I mindlessly obliged, lowering to my knees with shaking legs. I looked up at look through my lashes, mascara beginning to smudge under my eyes.
He brought a hand down to the side of my face caressing me gently, unbuckling his belt with the other. I felt myself grow wetter as Luke revealed his throbbing member, pulling his pants down only enough to reveal himself. I looked at Luke deeply as he ran a thumb over my lips.
"Who's mouth is this?" He spoke deeply, tapping his thumb on my lips indicating to open them.
"Yours." I said softly before opening my mouth lightly, inviting his thumb inside.
"That's a good girl." He briefly ran a thumb around my mouth before placing his tip at my lips, putting bis hands at the back of my head. I let out a small cough as Luke pushed his shaft all the way in, hitting the back of my throat. He let out a small groan as I wrapped my lips around him, swirling my tongue around his shaft.
"Fuck, your throat is so good, princess." He growled, slowly picking up a rhythm with his hips, thrusting himself in and out of my throat. I reached a hand up and gripped his thigh tightly, gagging around his size.
"That's a good girl, taking my cock like a good slut." He groaned deeply, looking down at me intensely as I took his shaft in my throat. Saliva began to drool from the sides of my mouth, as well as mascara tearing on my cheeks. Luke's fingers wrapped around my hair tightly, holding my head still slightly as he fucked my throat.
He pulled me off of him by my hair abruptly, tilting my head up at look at him as I coughed and choked while catching my breath.
"My pretty girl." He cooed gently before bringing me to me feet, guiding me to the bed. He swiftly pushed me onto the end of the bed, leaving me face down. My body trembled as I caught my breath, my cheek against the cold sheets. Suddenly, Luke's hands connected with my hips, propping my rear up. With quick hands, he yanked my shorts down my the waistband, my underwear accompanying them. I shivered at the cold air hitting my dripping heat.
Luke lined himself up behind me, running his tip along my slick folds. He leaned down closer to me as he spoke.
"You think they could fuck you like I can?" He teased lowly in my ear, pushing his tip gently against my hole. Before I had a chance to answer, Luke pushed himself inside me swiftly, leaning back up and grabbing my hips. I let out a loud whine and gripped the sheets beside me.
"You like getting fucked like a slut, don't you baby?" He growled, placing a hand at the side of my head and picking up his pace quickly.
"Y-yes. Lu.. Fuck." I moaned between thrusts and breaths. Luke chucked, placing a hard smack against my bare cheek, earning another squeal from my lips.
"Tell me you're mine." Luke spoke deeply, leaning down again toward my ear. He kept his face pace, making finding my words difficult.
"I'm y-yours, Luke." I whimpered. Luke abruptly pulled out, flipping me on my back before sliding back in. He connected his hand to my throat tightly as he began his vigorous pounding again. My hands flew to his wrist, gripping into anything I could as he rammed my lower half.
"You look so pretty taking my cock." He spoke lazily, bringing a thumb down and rubbing small circles on my sensitive bud. My back arched at the added sensation, emitting a whine from me.
My walls began to convulse around Luke's shaft, signaling to him my climax.
"Fuck, Luke. I- I'm gonna-"
"You wanna cum, doll?" He mocked, quickening his pace. I bit my lip eagerly, my body trembled with pleasure as I nodded frantically.
"Beg." He spat. I let out a heavy breath of frustration as I struggled with my words.
"Luke... Please. Let me cum, please." I pleaded between whimpers and thrusts, I curled my toes aggressively holding in my climax. Luke looked at me for a brief moment, as if he was grading my begging. I whined desperately before he spoke.
"Cum for me, baby." He finally spoke, he kept up his rhythm and working thumb, working me through my orgasm. My body shook under him, my mouth releasing a loud whine. Luke watched as I melted under him, bringing him to his finish. He emptied his warm load onto my stomach with a series of curses, collapsing onto his hands overhead of me.
He ultimately found his place beside me after cleaning his mess, the two of us laying together in silence as we caught our breath.
"You okay?" Luke turned his head to look at me with a warm expression, moving a piece of hair from my face. I nodded at his routine question with a content sigh, turning to face him. I giggled before speaking.
"You really think I want to fuck my friends?" I asked half sarcastically, Luke letting out a chuckle.
"Just saying." He threw his hands up in defense, "I don't like to share." He smirked, leaning in for a gentle kiss.
