Underrated Gems - Amends by Them Are Us Too

Amends - Them Are Us Too

Main Genres: Ethereal Wave, Dream Pop, Minimal Wave

A decent sampling of: Goth Rock, Art Rock, Ambient Pop, Shoegaze, Synth Pop

Covering the Cocteau Twins’ discography recently got me thinking about writing a review for this record.

Them Are Us Too were a dream pop / ethereal wave duo in the 2010s, comprised of vocalist Kennedy Ashlyn and the late guitarist Cash Askew, both of whom also programmed and played synthesizers.

Ashlyn and Askew were active members of both the goth scene and the prominent queer arts culture of the San Francisco Bay Area. The band had a modest following of fans, mostly immersed in those aforementioned niches, along with some online dream pop enthusiasts like myself (though I was sadly late to the discovery).

While the band wore their influences on their sleeves (particularly Cocteau Twins), the duo set themselves apart by the out-of-body magnitude of their sound, and Ashlyn’s powerful, soaring falsetto, making their voice a more resonant counterpart to the wispy soprano vocals of their idol Elizabeth Fraser.

While I never got the chance to see them live, the videos that are up on YouTube demonstrate just how exceptional Them Are Us Too were as a band when it came to reproducing their studio sound in a live performance setting. Suffice to say, Them Are Us Too were truly one of the few acts breathing new life into the mostly out-of-fashion ethereal wave sound.

All of this came to an end, however, when Cash Askew’s life was cut tragically short by the horrible 2016 Ghost Ship Warehouse fire. Cash Askew would go on to join the ranks of other musical and queer legends who were unfortunately taken all too soon from this life.

In the aftermath of Askew’s tragic death, Kennedy Ashlyn took the material they had been working on together and finished the project. This would become their sophomore album and final record released under the band’s name. This was their farewell tribute, beautifully titled Amends.

Amends is a delicate undertaking. An album bedridden by its grief, while also restless from its own waking nightmares. And yet, despite its ghostly apparitions and perpetual darkness, the music is tender, soothing, and utterly human. There is a profound contrast between the warm reminder of a loved one, and the cold emptiness left in their absence, that permeates throughout this record.

The album’s lyrical processing of grief is beautifully mirrored by its musical accompaniment. Iridescent synthesizers create echoing soundscapes with minimalist accents that are then painted over by electric guitar reverb, like crashing waves that wash over painful broken shards of glass bottles to produce smooth, refined sea glass.

“Grey Water” is a dream pop ballad submerged in an ocean of tears. With a heavy heart, this track sways back and forth until eventually spilling over into an unforgettable outro, featuring the grief-striken vocalization from Kennedy Ashlyn reaching impossible highs. As the song closes, it feels as though an entire lifetime of memories has dissipated, dissolving into the sea.

The album takes on a more intense and bitter tone for “Floor”, a relentless ethereal goth rave filled with sorrowful regret, as Ashlyn laments “I should have asked for more” again and again. The drum machine on this track feels as if it’s grinding everything in its path into dust, which becomes the hazy atmosphere that obscures Ashlyn’s vocals as they practically shout into the void.

The nine minute penultimate piece “Could Deepen” is Amend’s most heavenly offering, providing a sense of deliverance from the despair that permeates other songs on the record. The song is in two distinct movements: the opening part is an ambient ascent through what feels like trials of the soul, while the closing part is a dreamy free fall through descending synthesizer scales and a monsoon of echo effects.

The record finishes with the immaculate title track “Amends”, the song most explicitly written to be about Cash Askew. A delicate square wave synthesizer motif repeats in little intervals, pitter-pattering over glossy dream pop guitars, synthesizers, and dejected drum machine kicks and snares. The artistic expression of emotional loss on this song (and record) is already breath-taking as is, but nearly everything that needed to be said is conveyed perfectly in just that final verse where it is made agonizingly clear through lyric and through performance that Askew truly meant the entire world to Ashlyn.

I’d call it heart-wrenching, but that doesn’t really do it justice. What “Amends” does to the listener is it uses a musical tourniquet to squeeze the entirety of the human soul. It captures the immense vulnerability you would feel if someone you loved deeply, someone who emotionally anchors you, was suddenly gone in an instant. The lyrics also brilliantly deconstruct themselves, with Ashlyn openly questioning how it is even possible to write a tribute to someone so important to them as part of lyrics written for their tribute song. “Amends” was my song of the year at the end of 2018, and quite possibly still is my choice for that year.

I think that now is a good time to acknowledge that albums with a primary subject matter of grief are most often exceptionally personal works of art, and should therefore be approached with higher degrees of tact and sensitivity by anyone planning to write a review or assign a rating to such albums.

Likewise I should also say that, while I find this album very beautiful and moving, and have even used it to process my own feelings of grief in the past, that this album ultimately belongs to Kennedy Ashlyn. I never personally met or knew Cash Askew, nor did I even know who she was until after she had already passed away and the album was written.

We may be invited to remember Cash Askew through this wonderful record, and feel some of the weight of her departure in the music, but the many of us who didn’t know her personally will never be able to fully appreciate its depths, and my ability to write a review of the album is inherently limited to an outsider’s perspective. Such is the nature of listening to projects like Amends, Psychopomp, A Crow Looked At Me, and Carrie and Lowell that are primarily focused on the death of a loved one.

But for what it’s worth, I love and cherish this record. Amends is a far too unknown and underappreciated modern classic of the dream pop and ethereal wave genres. Hopefully a day will come when this gets properly rediscovered by the alternative music sphere at large, and Cash Askew will be rightfully honoured as having been one of the most dedicated architects of her craft.

More Random SBG headcanons

Taylor loves any form of photo opportunity, but her favorite would be photo booths. If she sees one she will drag anyone, mainly Tyler, into one to take pictures. She has an album somewhere full of these photos, and the first photo in the book is of her, Tyler, her mom, and her dad when they were little at an aquarium.

Aiden is great at video games. Since he was left home alone often, he probably turned to video games for entertainment. Considering Aiden’s tendency to seek out thrills, he would probably turn to horror or timed games.

It is 2016 I’m allowed to say this, Aiden was a FNAF kid, and I feel like the twins might have been as well. Taylor watched a lot of playthroughs as a kid and got Tyler into it so they would watch it together. Tyler was freaked out by it and refused to watch it in full screen, he probably went to the comments to look for a jump scare list. Aiden is a lore freak, if given an opportunity he would give a several-hour-long spiel about the entire timeline.

Firm believer that Logan’s glasses have Coke bottle lenses. This is probably not true, I just think it would be funny if his lenses went out of the frames.

Baron is terrified of Tyler. Not in the way that Tyler would beat him in a fight, but because the baseball coach would be fond of him. Tyler already puts a lot of his effort toward his sport, so he probably has a closer relationship with the coach than the other players. So if Tyler were to tell the coach the shit this guy does, I feel like he could do some damage to Barron. The only reason Tyler hasn’t told the coach about everything that Barron has done is because Barron is a valuable player for him. After all, if the team looks good, then he’ll look good for scholarships.

Ashlyn gets cold pretty easily. In the winter she has to look like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man so she can be somewhat comfortable. I thought that the it was called the State-Puff Marshmallow Man my life is a lie

Ashlyn is also pretty muscular because she does ballet— lean muscle. Ballet requires so much control and strength to pull off, so it would only make sense. Have you seen how buff ballerinas are?

Both Aiden and Taylor were scary movie and scary game fans. Aiden loves the thrill of the stories, and Taylor loves creepy/eerie things as we saw with her enthusiasm in a haunted tour of the Sorrel Weed House. When they hang out, they either watch a recent horror movie that came out or a new game that Aiden had gotten.

Ben, Logan, and Tyler, however, can not handle horror and they get jumpy around it. Ben and Logan openly express that they don’t care for the genre, but Tyler just kind of avoids it/does not want to admit he is scared by it. If they have to watch a horror movie, Logan will be curled up in a blanket near Ashlyn covering his eyes to avoid the jump scares(he fails miserably), and Ben is huddled up around Taylor and Aiden because their presence comforts him. Tyler is either sitting somewhat apart from the group or on the other side of Ashlyn trying to act tough, he is failing miserably, resulting in Aiden, Taylor, and Ashlyn teasing him.

Mike and Emma treat all of the kids as if they were their own. At first, I think they were mainly fond of them because they were Ashlyn’s first and only friends as well as them always being at their house. I think it also has something to do with the fact that they spent at least a month teaching them self-defense to protect themselves and each other. Finding out about everyone’s situation, I think they just want to protect them.

Speaking of the previous headcanon, Tyler sees Mike as a father figure, and it kind of just eats at him/leaves him with some conflicting feelings. He is a bit envious of Ashlyn for having such caring parents, and it comes with a bit of guilt when he looks at her for a while. I think Mike realizes this and tries to be there for him. I don’t think it is the same for Taylor because Tyler stepped up to that role, similar to the relationship between Katara and Sokka in Avatar the Last Airbender.

What’s significant about the Lemonade album?

I love being the elder millennial y’all trust for your pop culture history lessons 😌

In 2014 Solange (Beyoncé’s younger sister), Beyonce and Jay Z were leaving a Met Gala after party in NYC and leaked surveillance footage shows Solange hitting and yelling at Jay Z in the elevator of the hotel

This is all the world cared about for DAYS. Like, CNN, MSNBC and Fox News were covering it during prime time. We talked about it ferociously. Because most public security cameras don’t have audio so we had no idea what was said. Everyone and their MOTHERS were speculating about what happened in that damn elevator.

Flash forward to April 2016, Beyoncé releases her 6th album, Lemonade, a concept album that covers Beyoncé’s emotional journey after learning about Jay Z’s infidelity. (Which, as we all found out, was the reason Solange was dead set on beating that man’s ass in that elevator.) And if you really haven’t listened to it I literally couldn’t recommend it more. It’s one of the greatest albums released in our lifetimes.

Now, there are approximately 1,000 break up albums and Ali wouldn’t have referenced that album specifically (given the content) unless she was subtly confirming that Ashlyn did in fact cheat on her.

rival bands au ashlyn not knowing how to make it up to maddox so for years they don't talk. they both try to move on and date others but no one is comparing to what they were.

every song thats released by miko and the losers written by maddox has a bitter undertone to it that always leads back to ashlyn. back when maddie was still with ash, the songs she wrote were more upbeat and fun. she doesn't know whether she should believe the last texts that ash ever sent saying that she had no idea about the paparazzi. she doesn't know the difference between the truth and the lies that the internet is telling. she's questioning everything she hears about the tercet and her own band now. does she even like the music she's putting out or is she just releasing it because it's what the fans expect to hear from her? is this her new look now? the girl that dated the enemy and is now left heartbroken forever?

there's an award show coming up and the losers have been nominated for album of the year, along with maddie's song as song of the year. she doesn't know if she wants to even be there. ashlyn will be there, and the whole world know that song is for her. it's been played on every radio station and streamed in what feels like every corner of the world. she's just left here, not knowing what to do.

Hello!

I have not said a word about Freya since making that initial post (which may need some updating), so these questions are fun in the way that I have not thought about most of these things before.

✨

I named her after the Norse goddess associated with love, beauty, fertility, and gold, who rides a chariot pulled by two cats.

I also chose the name Freya because I am a big fan of Freya Rowley who was in CATS (2019) as Jellylorum, Tantomile in the UK Tour 2014, and a Swing in the UK Tour 2013.

The name may be seen as better suited for a OC that is a Norwegian Forest Cat or similar breed, but I think it fits well with the character I created.

I know this is probably more angled towards written works, but I want to take a different approach instead and talk about musical genres.

Since I made her more closely related to Griddlebone is the sense of vocal abilities, and that one of her three words is operatic, it would be fairly obvious that Freya could be a classically trained opera singer. I would not want to tie her down to one specific (and perhaps stereotypical) genre, and I think she would enjoy anything that allows her to flex her vocal prowess. Most importantly though, it should carry emotional weight! Vocal talents are not necessarily about who can be the most extreme.

What I have in mind is an artist such as Kennedy Ashlyn whose musical projects SRSQ (who released my album of the year in 2022 with Ever Crashing) or Them Are Us Too match (in my opinion) what I have in mind for less traditional classical format vocals.

I do not think Freya would really have a rival or arch-nemesis, and would be widely appreciated by everyone in the Tribe. She does have a tinge of competitiveness, but not enough to make her view anyone as a rival. There is the obvious wariness towards Macavity and his henchcats, but that is shared throughout the Tribe.

With her drive for perfection, I think her biggest enemy would be herself. She wants everything to be perfect and tries as hard as possible to achieve it, but that is not always possible and that can bother her. She also wants to try and please everyone as best as she can, which feeds into the perfectionism she strives for. It can all lead to never feeling quite happy with her efforts and make her unhappy. Trying to spread happiness can be a draining affair if no one reciprocates it.

Her worst memories are definitely realizing that she would not be around to see her Kittens grow up. She tries to plan ahead and make sure they are in the best care (and who better than with Jellylorum), but there is only so much that she can do. There are not many Cats that she would confide in to share her struggles, as she is one to internalize her emotions.

At one point towards her end, she would reach the conclusion that while she was not always perfect, she did as best as she could with everything, and find a fleeting comfort in that.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

Oof! Remember how People‘s first confirmation of Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris dating — after both of their marriages went busto — made sure to say there was nothing “salacious”? And also that it was brand new??

Yeah, pretty quickly we got hints that might not be the case. Besides that flirty video from Cannes, we also noticed Ashlyn’s wife (and longtime USWNT teammate) Ali Krieger mentioned entering her “Beyoncé lemonade era” on Instagram. That’s as heavy a hint of cheating as we’ve ever heard! We mean, the entire Lemonade album is about Bey finding out hubby Jay-Z has been cheating on her. What other way could one read into that???

Well, late last week, someone finally spilled what might be the real story behind both their breakups. A source told DeuxMoi it wasn’t some sudden thing they both experienced while in France over the summer — they say the One Tree Hill star had been pursuing Ashlyn for WAY longer than that! And Ali found out!

“Sophia Bush has been flirting with Ashlyn for almost a whole year. Ali has the messages. She threw her out the moment she confirmed that there was cheating.”

If that happened this summer, when sources have said the split between the soccer stars began, would that explain why it seemed so sudden that Sophia was leaving her marriage to Grant Hughes? Once she and Ashlyn got caught, she had to abandon ship, too? Hmm…

In any case, Ali learning about this from seeing messages is BRUTAL! What’s worse? The source says some of the couple’s friends knew about it — and were helping to cover for Ashlyn’s cheating!

This source also claimed Ashlyn was leaving the marriage with NUTHIN:

Obvi this source is totally anonymous, so there’s no way any of this is verifiable. But it fits better than anything else we’ve heard! Until someone decides to come clean — or air dirty laundry — this may be the closest we get to the truth!

Oh. This is a fun beat with very ouch lyrics.

In fact; I feel very called out by this song.

Would've loved a bit more sadness in the melody (well... I got what I wanted with the rest of this album?)

There's a theme happening with this album, and I love that. But I really need a happy song on here.

Oh, it's a sad self love song? I like that.

The melody is kind of childish? I'm not too sure if I like that.

Would've loved for the violin in Always to go over into this song more fluidly.

OH MY GOD. VERY MUCH NOT A CALL-OUT SONG

It's about grief.

Very vulnerable.

I'm near tears. This hurt a lot.

The ending absolutely broke me and I had to take a break because I was sobbing so hard.

Kansas: 4/10

The bass is nice, the build-up is really cool. But the drop is very disappointing :(

I keep waiting for that "Oh heck yes!" moment.

There is no "Oh heck yes!" moment.

This album is Sad. I kind of knew that already, but Whoa.

I love her voice, and the songs are great, but I would've loved to have a happy song somewhere in the middle of this? There were a couple of songs that could've been so much more (Kansas), but in general it's a great album.
