when I read good omens I fully interpreted ineffable husbands as an asexual couple because like.... they're supernatural beings that don't really jibe with human sex
but in the show they have so much sexual tension and I think that's because Michael Sheen always looks like he's ready to jump David Tennent's bones at any given moment and he's so real for that

it makes me a bit sad to see the asexual ineffable husbands fading into the background of the fandom. don't get me wrong, i actively enjoy and have no problem with content + headcanons that portray them as allosexual or allo-adjacent. it's fun and there are HELLA talented people literally everywhere you look!
but when i discovered good omens about a year before season 2 came out, it was the first time i had felt represented onscreen and within a fandom. here was an asexual love story widely accepted by the fandom, and it was beautiful! but i don't really get that vibe anymore for some reason? people who headcanon aziraphale and crowley as asexual (i personally headcanon aziraphale as a sex-favourable orchidsexual and crowley as a sex-ambivalent ace) have sorta been pushed into the corners of most online fandom spaces, and while i don't think it's intentional i do think it reflects a lot of the effects that amatonormativity has on the way we consume media.
we've been trained to favour depictions of sexual relationships in media because society tells us that they're more valid than non-conventional ones (think qprs, non-sexual romantic relationships, fwbs, etc). we're conditioned to view asexual romantic relationships as "boring" (steven moffat you're not part of this but i'm looking at you). when we see a relationship like aziraphale and crowley's, which doesn't outwardly appear like a traditional romantic relationship, we're left wanting more and passing over the people who have already found everything they want in the ineffable husbands' relationship. i think the theories and fanart and writing are gorgeous and i'll never not love seeing a fandom (especially one so unbelievably close to my heart) thrive, but i miss seeing myself so wholly represented by the fandom's general treatment of its characters
(sorry if this was poorly worded i am. very tired right now and wanted to talk about my little guys /gn)

crowley and aziraphale being sexy is not mutually exclusive from them being asexual. y’all do realize that, right?
i’ve seen people say “i just want them to be ace icons, they’re an old gay couple they’re not meant to be sexy!!” and while that’s well intentioned and i can see where you’re coming from, i have to disagree.
don’t get me wrong, i don’t necessarily want a sex scene in canon. i did and still do read both of them as ace. the wanting them to be ace is not the issue.
i take issue with the reasoning some people are providing. let me put this bluntly: old people can and do have sex. old straight couples have sex, old queer couples have sex. being old is not synonymous with someone not being sexually active. and it says a lot about how you all view aging and old people when you act like old people can’t get it on.
secondly, aziraphale and crowley can be sexy and also never have sex. ANYBODY can be sexy and never actually have sex. because sexy is vibe, it’s a state of mind, it’s about your physicality and the way you carry yourself. you can think someone is sexy and never want to fuck them, you can think you yourself are sexy and not go any further than that.
so yeah, crowley can look hot and sexy in his turtlenecks and waistcoats. and aziraphale can look sexy in his waistcoats and button downs. you can look at david tennant’s jawline and be enamored and you can look at michael sheen’s nose and think it’s beautiful. and they never have to actually have sex with each other for any of that to be true. sexiness does not necessitate sex.
not to mention, every time i see the “they’re an old gay couple they don’t need to be sexy!!” argument it feels very much like sanitizing queer relationships and love for the sake of cishet comfortability. too often queer people are not allowed to be sexual, or for fucks sake, not just sexual but physical with their significant others. because physical manifestations and displays of queer love make the cishet world uncomfortable. and not allowing that kind of physical love to exist in media only serves to further perpetuate the issue.
queer love and queer people don’t have to be palatable to a cishet audience. queer love should get to exist authentically and queer people should get to exist and present in however way they see fit.
and in the context of good omens i think that means letting aziraphale and crowley be sexy even if they never have sex. that means letting them be physical in their love. because queer people deserve that, especially old queer people

Ok but Crowleys reaction to Aziraphale explaining what sex is
Tumblr media
Look at him. Confused, perplexed, stunted, puzzled, bewildered, baffled. Girlie has NO idea what he's talking about. Truly an ace icon

If you don't mind a bit of self-promo, I just finished posting what may be one of my favorite fics I've written. It made me incredibly happy to write and share. It's called "It’s Not Too Bad When You Get Used to It" and is about Aziraphale and Crowley having to wear each other's corporations for much longer than one day at the end of season one. It's aroace, queerplatonic, and full of fluff and humor!
Here's a link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/52127296
Thank you to all the mods for all you do, this page is such an incredible resource and it always makes my day to see one of my own fics recced here. <3
Of course we do not mind, my dear! I hope you're proud of your hard work!
It’s Not Too Bad When You Get Used to It by IneffableDoll [Rated T, 28K words]
Following Armageddon’s failure, Aziraphale and Crowley perform the bodyswap, prepared to be captured by Heaven and Hell. But after both factions fail to show up the next day, the angel and demon must pretend to be the other for much longer than anticipated… Hilarity ensues, feelings are felt, and no one anticipated so much breakfast being involved. But that’s ineffability for you.

crowley and aziraphale being asexual does not automatically mean they are sex-repulsed, please
if you headcanon them as such then all the more power to you! obviously this is not the problem here, all headcanons are equally valid. but acting like it's disgusting whenever someone mentions them having sex or doing something sexual is... kinda weird.
acting like there is something inherently wrong with them having a sexual relationship isn't that great of a take. "their relationship is so pure because there is nothing sexual" their relationship can be pure and include sex, who are you the church???!
I personally like to believe they are completely neutral and they would decide to try and proceed to have the most asexual sex ever and enjoy it simply because it makes them feel good and they like making each other feel good. but everyone is entitled to their own headcanons - none of them are inherently disgusting!
(unless you only tie their asexuality to the fact that they're not human and decide that they would be having sex because they're more "human" - which is weird towards asexual people because why are you dehumanizing us)

I like to think that all angles and demons are asexual and they don’t see the need for sex (they are all immortal beings so they don’t see the need to reproduce like humans do) but they know a lot about sex because of humans and I feel like Aziraphale and Crowley would probably try stuff out together just because they can

Asexual Crowley is my favorite hc ever because sometimes they'll do things that are romantic for Az like saving his books or defending him but literally if i had to bet on what their reaction would be to sex i'd bet on them being so confused about sexual attraction like ???
idk that just makes so much sense to me
id love to have Az sometime post-aziracrow-confirmed describing how he always liked them and found them hot and Crowley would just be like wait? thats real?

We all know that Crowley doesn’t know how people/animals/beings reproduce, he might not even know what the process is in general. We are all aware of this.
But did we ever consider why?
I think it’s because Crowley is a plant person. He’s lived in a garden all his life at the beginning of the series and really all he knows are plants and demons and angels.
And what do we know about plants?
Quite a lot of them reproduce asexually. Crowley probably assumes that, like everything he’s familiar with, humans do that too. And personally, I don’t think Aziraphale has the heart to tell him at this point. I mean, it’s been six thousand years, let Crowley believe humans are plants.

maybe it’s because i’m VERY ace, but i really don’t want azi and crowley to fuck. and not in a “sex is gross and shouldn’t be in media” way more in a “azi and crowley are ace icons and i really don’t want sex thrown into their relationship because i don’t think it adds to their story and also i want Good Omens to be an ace love story” way.
and not to say ace people can’t have or enjoy sex, ace people can have sex and they are still ace. i just think that part of what makes azi and crowley so special is that they don’t need that kind of physical touch for their love to be so strong. i love the idea of the them hugging and cuddling and maybe sharing tender kisses. but sex? it just feels off to me.
i think part of this is because when i read the book i viewed them as queer platonic more than anything else, let alone romantic. they felt like the kind of in love that everyone can see without ever seeing overt pda. i didn’t really get the romantic angle until season 2.
and obviously them being ace is my headcanon and yours can be completely different. i understand people thinking sex is in store and i don’t think anything’s wrong with that or with writing smutty fic about them.
i think i’d just love to see a love story like theirs play out without sex. i want more ace love stories in mainstream media. i selfishly want to see my kind of love on screen.
(also please please please don’t take this in the wrong direction purity culture wise. i think sex is a natural part of the human condition and if it’s part of how you show love that’s fucking wonderful for you. i just don’t see the appeal and am kind of repulsed by the idea of me having sex, but good for you if you like it! this post is just me being wishful on main lol)

hey hey guess what it’s ace week and i’m still obsessed with good omens, so it’s aspec ineffable husbands time babeyyyy
crowley is a demon who works for hell. temptation is the name of the game, especially sexual, and lust is one of the seven deadly sins. crowley is also a sex-repulsed asexual, and wants no part in that side of things. he does definitely experience romantic attraction (though it’s really only happened with aziraphale). aziraphale, who as an angel is supposed to love everyone but also to abstain from earthly things, is a romance-favorable aromantic. he adores the performative and dramatic aspect of romance, the human aspect of love, but doesn’t actually feel the attraction associated with it. he is, however, allosexual, and occasionally has sex and enjoys it.
anyway yeah they subvert both of their sides’ expectations yet again and they are together. they’re married your honor. their relationship is so utterly confusing to literally everyone but they care each other.

I doubt that when Aziraphale said “there must be something I can do for you” he had giving road head in mind, but lots of people ran with that and I still think it’s funny. On the plus side, now I can imagine Crowley finally understanding that interaction the better part of a century later and tearfully streaming Blow by Beyoncé whenever they think about that moment.

not loving the blatant erasure of asexual ppl in the good omens fandom rn
it feels like everything is seen as either being black and white platonic or sexual without anything being able to be romantic. the main example i think is the kiss, given that kissing isn't a solely sexual act at all. it can be of course but i would argue that it really isn't in that scene.
i really couldn't care less about fanfiction here i'm fine with people writing what they want as long as its not sexualising anything literally illegal etc. aziraphale and crowley are, in canon, asexual and a lot of this is feeling like just yelling at ppl that men can't be ace because if men are ace it's just because neil gaiman 'views gay sex as inherently disgusting' and without his apparent 'homophobic beliefs' there is no way they would ever be asexual
ace people exist, they aren't a choice to make a show more palatable, or a cheap cop out to to deal with whatever people are saying neil gaiman has against allosexual gay men.
being asexual doesn't make a character any less queer, and i'm tired of the cycle of accepting ace people for a bit then completely turning on them again on this site
