Why is Gakushu Asano Bad At Debating?

One thing that surprised me about Gakushu's character, is that he appears to be lacking in his debating abilities, as the picture above suggests. All of his stats are perfect, except for debate.

At first, I thought it was strange for Matsui to write that sort of flaw for Gakushu to have. Like, he excelled in everything. Why is this one subject so difficult for him? I thought it was a bit random but after some re-reading and digging, I think I've figured it out.

Now, debating involves an organized argument or contest of ideas in which the participants discuss a topic from two opposing sides. Gakushu is extremely well-educated, so no matter what side he is on, he should be able to win with no problems, right?

Well... no...

I'm sure some of you guys know that sometimes debating can lead to heated arguments. Whether it's an organized event, or just among friends, some people can lose their cool. I believe Gakushu is one of those people. The first time we see Gakushu debating with anyone is Princess Lea from the Light Novels.

The princess was the first to present her argument. She educated the students on the importance of peace and how awful war is. When it was Gakushu's turn, he squarely denied it. According to him, there are some benefits to war and points out the flaw in Princess Lea's argument.

This led to... well... a heated argument to the point their English was so fast, that most of the students there couldn't keep up.

Most of the time, Gakushu is rather composed and able to keep up a facade, just like his father. Here, though, he lost his cool. I gotta say, it's funny to see him so angry. Lol anyway. It makes sense that Gakushu would lose his cool far more easily than his father. Remember, the guy is still a teenager and hasn't gone through many life experiences yet.

Not only is he far more hot-headed than his dad, but he is an arrogant guy who thinks he is right about everything. So, when someone has a different opinion of him and believes he's wrong, he can't take it. Keep in mind that this guy is constantly being put on a pedestal. The school adores him and treats him like a prince.

No one would dare to argue against him.

So, when someone does, it messes with his emotions.

My AC headcanon is that Gakushuu and Karma are both depressed/suicidals but Akabane is in a "I don't care about anything and I don't value life since it's all temporary so what's the point ?" way while Asano is more a "I'm trying so hard to live as a human being but the universe (my dad) won't let me and this is the only way to take control" person.

Like Karma keep living by curiosity and spite but doesn't really mind if he'd find himslef in a fatal situation. He'd welcome Death with a hug and a smile. Yet he won't try since he still has things that interest him but if he's bored he'd totally attempt suicide (or put himself in a situation where his life is in danger). He knows that everyone will eventually die and like the idea of deciding the day and the way to leave. He just can't fathom out why people are so attached to their life.

Meanwhile Gakushuu deeply wants to live, he even has plans for his future. But he doesn't have the freedom to choose what he can do or say and it hurt him so much. He's desesperate and afraid and he tried everything but it doesn't work. His love for Life slowly become Hate, every single thing he used to enjoy is now a chore or a burden, and it's insuferrable. So he becomes revengeful. If Life doesn't let him be then he'll quit and see what'll happen. He will make his death everyone else's problem. He'll create chaos in a world that used to control him. He simply wants to live too much to accept being a puppet, this is not a life and he can and will end it. He doesn't really believe in reincarnation he would take the bet of a next life being more peacefull.

he just thinks it's so funny that he has something asano wants and has no way to obtain. you!! there's not a chance karma's gonna let asano off so easily.

he's going to show off at the worst moments. kissing you in the library in front of asano's study group, on the way home, in class (although not nearly as show-offy. that would give him many detentions!!)

karma loves to see the look on asano's face when he sees you both together. asano definitely has a lot of jealousy in him!!

but, you spend enough time with asano—he had to have fallen for you somehow. so—obviously, karma's also got some jealousy. not that he doesn't trust you, it's just that he's not there to show you off to asano.

sometimes, when karma's not with you and he sees asano, karma'll loudly talk to his friends about your most recent date together. or, maybe, the one he's planning on taking you on.

obviously, though—if you tell karma to stop testing asano like he is, he'll tone it down. but he's also doing this to prevent his actual jealousy from getting to him, so he's going to continue at least a little bit.

karma does keep his eye on you, though. he wants to make sure asano isn't getting too hopeful. but, just in case he does, he'll always be around to steal you away with some stupid excuse.
