I've gotten about half way through TGCF now (part way through book five), and there is a fandom thing that's confusing the heck out of me. Maybe you can offer some insight.
I keep seeing posts saying Liu Qingge is like Mu Qing. Other then martial talent, they've got nothing in common as far as I can tell. Did I miss something? Does MQ start acting more like LQG after book five?
Honestly it's Feng Xin that gives me major Liu Qingge vibes. They're not identical (Feng Xin is certainly more prone to cursing fits, and he's had at least one female lover), but they're both loyal, protective, a bit curt, nervous around women, etc. All around pretty similar in attitude and behavior. Mu Qing though? That comparison throws me.
Liu Qingge and Mu Qing are not alike at all. You’re not missing anything, anon, and nothing in the latter half of the novel (I’m assuming you’re reading the officials) will change about Mu Qing’s character or actions to make this comparison more accurate. Mu Qing stans—much like antagonist stans from other mxtx novel fandoms—like to compare him to Liu Qingge because most everyone agrees that Liu Qingge is a likable, non-controversial character that is explicitly written to be a good person. The comparison isn’t a true comparison i.e. “these characters share these traits, therefore they are alike,” but rather, a redemption-by-comparison whereby stans are trying to build an association to other characters from other novels to “redeem” Mu Qing’s character where he fails in his own story, a la “character x is a good person, so if I say character y is like character x, then character y must also be a good person.”
I do find the comparison between Liu Qingge and Feng Xin an interesting one to make, but on behalf of Liu Qingge’s reputation as an infallibly loyal friend and shidi, he is 1000x a better friend to Shen Qingqiu than Feng Xin was to Xie Lian 😤

one of the things I think about in tgcf is how the characters' friend circles actually function. like as it is in the novels, everything circles around xl (main character, duh) but we do get glimpses of other cliques (3 tumors, ghost city, banyue) and I'm so interested in whatever else they might have going on. do the martial gods hang out with each other (especially during the rebuilding since they're all stuck in a palace)? what's lqq's situation. does qyz have any friends?? what are the dynamics there. do either mq or fx hang out with other people?? because if they don't that seems like just such a terribly lonely godhood for all of them

Hua Cheng must be guarding his old sketchbooks with his afterlife cause he’d die if Xie Lian saw his old work. His art in his pining arc must be amazing.
I mean he kept a lot of it in that big cave that only opens once every few centuries and even that wasn’t safe so really anything he made in the centuries since can never truly be guarded completely against prying eyes.
Luckily his husband thinks he’s sweet for it 🥰

YALL!!!
If Feng Xin “bought” Jian Lan just to TALK and for companionship, then doesn’t that mean that Mu Qing served that purpose enough times for it to be considered such???? How many times do you think Mu Qing fell asleep humouring Feng Xin’s want to just chat (and we all know he wouldn’t have become a chatterbox at his precious prince).
Like their relationship couldn’t have been *that* bad until the whole fracture situation which was inevitable bc kids-young adults and stress etc.

may have to come out as a hua cheng disliker after this reread I'm following, and it may be because I'm biased towards mq but like. okay I have a lot to say actually
it's nice that hc is always on xl's side and defends xl when he's not as powerful as the people around him but like...mq and fx really love xl. they really want to look out for him and protect him. they WERE loyal in the past and it was only under extraordinarily desperate and miserable circumstances that mq left - mq who has his own mother to take care of, and who freely admitted to making mistakes, and still tried to come back and give xl and fx food!
and fx who literally NEVER LEFT and was in fact TOLD to leave by xl. mqfx were more loyal than most people would be expected to be under the circumstances, and still for mistakes and things they did literally 800 years ago hc treats them with such contempt and cruelty. like there were many many reasons that the events of book 2/4 happened, mqfx aren't the people to blame. not everyone can be expected to be as single-mindedly devoted as hc, something the narrative actually points out. and it kind of necessitates hc having literally no other responsibilities, relationships, or even interests besides xl. like, mqfx's lives didn't revolve around xl, they still had their own things going on and that's normal. And it's kind of depressing that this is the only avenue for a romantic relationship bc its so unfeasible and cuts out so many people
I would get it if hc was angry on his own behalf since mq was very cruel to him as a child but he only seems to hate him bc of him leaving xl…and seeing hc now in this powerful position sneering at people and wishing death on them honestly kind of makes him look like a bully. but then again a lot of these people looked down on him as a kid so it's KIND of justified?? idk it just all seems so immature for him to constantly be so unkind esp when mq is practically being imprisoned or at risk of being forced to descend.
and yeah I get that I'm reading a fantastical romance and it's not supposed to be "realistic" but goddammit those are xl's friends and it feels weird to see xl laugh at hc openly mocking them. I feel like I'm too old to enjoy that kind of dynamic. I laugh once but when I actually start to think about it, it's quite unpleasant

Yeah yeah Mu Qing loves watching Feng Xin work out, we all know that, but Feng Xin?? Feng Xin goes weak in the fucking knees anytime Mu Qing is anywhere near physical activity. Naturally this manifests in anger because, well, it’s Feng Xin, but fuck if the resulting sparring match isn’t the most homoerotic thing to ever exist
#fx: sees mq working out#fx: has the overwhelming urge to push mq against a wall and ki- kill him?#punch him in the face? (with his hand definitely not his mouth no way)#mq: lightly jogging with the wind in his hair a bead of sweat running down his face#fx: trips him#obviously mq trips fx too and fx ends up pinned to the ground which he’s not entirely sure is better than before#he also has a bloody nose and black eye but to be fair he did punch mq first#don’t judge him he’s really not good with feelings and physically could not handle that#two weeks later he once again baited mq into fighting him after running into him working out (not that it was hard mq is easy to bait)#next thing he knows fx is pinned against a wall mq’s sword to his throat and then they’re kissing#inevitably every fight they have after that ends in them kissing until they forgo the fighting entirely and just go straight to kissing#800+ years late is better than never as i always say (and as xl always says probably)#hc would be SUCH a bitch about it though#‘lol you guys are so stupid. it took you 800+ years to get together?’#‘it you 800+ years too’#‘yeah but i wasn’t friends with gege for 800 years’#‘we weren’t friends’#‘keep telling yourself that’#‘we WEREN’T’#‘i don’t know I like to think we were all friends even if we didn’t show it very well’#‘…’#‘….’#*begruding agreement from fengqing because they don’t have it in them to disagree when xl says it*#fengqing#tgcf

Mu Qing stopped caring and let everything go, thoroughly ripping things out into the open. “Of course it has to do with everything. At the time, life by His Highness’ side was staggeringly difficult, and you also hated me, the one who had returned to the Middle Court, to the bone. You love digging through my history to berate my wrongs, and since she’s your bedmate, how could she not hate me by this subliminal influence? Who knows, maybe she also started hating His Highness because, in the end, you still didn’t take her away, and instead chose to continue your wretched loyalty, it was practically abandoneme…”
Feng Xin couldn’t bear this anymore, and roared, “STOP YOUR BULLSHIT!!”
His fist flew out and Mu Qing raised his own to return the blow. Jian Lan went up to stop them but that fetus spirit started cackling weirdly, much like the chaotic cries of old crows, exceedingly horrifying. Pei Ming and Yin Yu both pulled Feng Xin and Mu Qing back separately while Quan Yizhen was standing on the side staring, seeming to be contemplating who’d win if they started a fight. In any case, it was a mess in the hall.
