Arvin wasn’t one to offer help to people, much less a stranger, but you had caught his eye. He stood by his car after filling his tank with gas and watched you stare at the gas pumps with a puzzled look on your face. He had seen you pull into the gas station with such confidence, but that was all gone now that you had to pick the right pump to put in your car. Arvin debated driving away and letting you figure it out by yourself since after all, he didn’t even know you. But after watching you hesitantly reaching for the diesel for the third time, he decided to speak up.
“Need help miss?” He asked as he approached you. You stiffened up at the sound of his voice and took an instinctive step away from him.
“No. I’m fine, thanks.” You replied without looking at him.
“You sure about that?” Arvin asked as he watched you hesitantly pick up the diesel pump.
“Said I don’t need any help from the likes of you, all right?” You said again. “Just leave me alone and go on your way.”
“Sorry miss. Didn’t mean to trouble you. Just noticed you was putting diesel in your car, is all.” Arvin said and raised his hands in defense.
“Diesel?” You paused and looked down at the pump in your hands.
“Yeah, darling. That right there is diesel.”
“Psh. I knew that. I like diesel.” You lied and brought the pump over to your car.
“Oh, my bad. Didn’t know that. Can I ask if you also like your car blowing up?” Arvin asked sarcastically.
“Excuse me?”
“Diesel will clog your fuel system and keep the car from startin. If you push the gas pedal too much, whole car will burst in flames. Seen it happen right in front of me once. The guy barely made it out alive.”
“Oh.” You froze and looked down at the pump in your hands.
“Could help you out, if you like.” He offered again.
“No thank you. I said I was fine.” You repeated, in a kinder tone this time. Arvin nodded and took a step back as he watched you put the diesel pump back. You looked between the other two pumps for a minute before hesitantly grabbing the one in the middle.
“Um….” You hesitatingly looked to Arvin to see if you were about to make another fatal mistake. He shook his head and held up one finger to let you know you needed pump number one. You gave him a tight smile before putting back the pump in your hand and picking up the first one. You put the pump in your car and just stood there until Arvin put his hand over yours to squeeze the pump. You felt the gas flow out and looked at Arvin with an embarrassed smile.
“Thanks.” You said quietly.
“No problem, doll.” He chuckled and felt his face flush from how close you were.
“Sorry I was short with you before. I have a hard time trusting men sometimes.” You admitted without looking into his eyes.
“Yeah? Seems we have that in common.”
“I just didn’t know if you were gonna fill my car up and then try to get me to repay you or something.”
“Repay me?”
“You know. With a kiss or something.”
“Darling, I’m no gentlemen, but I’m no villain either. I’d never try and get you to do something you didn’t want to do. Just saw a pretty lady struggling and wanted to offer my help. That’s all.” Arvin assured you, and you felt yourself believing him.
“Oh. Well thats very nice of you. Sorry I was rude.”
“No need to be sorry. Got a sister back home and I hope she’s half as vigilant as you are. Can’t trust nobody in this town. Especially not the men.” Arvin said and looked around the gas station.
“Don’t I know it.” You sighed. Arvin noticed the sadness in your voice and gave you a long look. He hadn’t seen you around before, which was strange since he thought he knew everyone in town. You were awfully pretty and the fact that you were a little mean to him made him like you even more.
“My names Arvin, by the way.” He told you.
“Y/n.” You smiled warmly at him.
“Nice to meet you, Y/n.” He returned the smile.
“You too, Arvin. Thanks again for the lesson.” You replied. You finished pumping the gas in your car and watched as Arvin returned the pump so you would know what to do next time.
“I’m really smart, by the way.” You said after a beat of silence.
“Huh?” He laughed in surprise.
“I’m really smart. I’m a school teacher down by the church. I went to college too. And I was the top of my class.” You told him, adding something every time you thought of a different example of your intelligence.
“Is that so?” Arvin asked, still confused what point you were making.
“I’m just telling you this so you don’t think I’m some dumb damsel in distress. I’m usually very smart but my daddy used to fill my car for me and never taught me how. He said it wasn’t a lady’s job to do it.”
“Well where’s your daddy now? Cause somebody needs to stop you from blowing yourself up.” Arvin chuckled.
“He don’t speak to me no more.” You said quietly, making Arvin feel guilty for poking fun at you.
“Oh. Sorry to hear that.” He said sincerely.
“It’s fine. I know what to do now thanks to you.“
“It was no trouble, darling. And next time, use this pump. Stay away from the diesel.” Arvin said and tapped the correct pump.
“I will. Thank you.” You smiled at him before looking over his shoulder. Arvin watched the way your smile dropped and the color drained from your face.
“Oh shoot.” You whispered.
“What’s wrong? Look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Arvin frowned and looked over his shoulder to try to find what you were looking at.
“My ex boyfriends just pulled up.” You gulped and pointed. Arvin immediately felt curious to see what kind of guy you used to date to see if he had a chance with you. When he saw a man in a red and white pinstripe shirt and white pants coming out of a flashy car, he cracked an amused smile.
“That candy ass used to be your boyfriend?” Arvin couldn’t help but laugh.
“Hush. He’ll hear you.” You whispered desperately and tugged on Arvins shirt to get him to stand in front of you.
“How come he’s dressed like a candy cane?” Arvin genuinely asked as he used his body to block you from your ex boyfriends view.
“I mean it, Arvin. Hush up.” You whispered harshly.
“Whats got you so wound up, baby doll? Did he take the breakup hard or something?”
“Truth is, he used to beat up on me.” You admitted. “It took all the strength I had to leave him. If he sees me right now, I’m scared of what he might do to get me back.”
“He beat on you?” Arvin looked over his shoulder again and felt his hands ball into fists. He found your unwillingness to be seen funny before, but was furious now. He looked at your ex with a clenched jaw and took a protective step in front of you.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be telling all this to a stranger.” You apologized, making Arvin look at you like you were crazy. He put his hands on your shoulders and rubbed up and down to try and calm you down.
“No, no it’s okay, darling. I don’t mind the story. Just mind the characters.” Arvin assured you before giving your ex another angry look. He didn’t want to lose his temper in front of you, but the thought of this pretentious guy beating up a school teacher was making his blood boil. He could feel his face getting hotter the longer he looked at your ex and the urge to beat him up got stronger.
“I know this is a little crazy to ask, but would you mind…” You started to ask but trailed off.
“Mind what?”
“Nothing. Forget it. Never mind.” You shook your head.
“Just ask me, darling. Worst I’ll say is no.”
“Would you mind doing something to make him think we’re together? Like kissing me or something?” You whispered through an embarrassed smile.
“Oh, so now you do want me to kiss you? I thought you were mean to me because you didn’t want me to try and kiss you.” Arvin smiled teasingly. He knew the gravity of the situation and was trying to calm you down a little so you wouldn’t be freaked out.
“I know what I said before.” You rolled your eyes. “But this is important. If he thinks I got a boyfriend, he’ll leave me alone.”
“I see. And you want me to pretend to be your boyfriend?”
“Just until he’s gone.”
“I think I can manage that.” Arvin shrugged before pulling you into a kiss. He slipped and arm around your waist and pressed you against your car to kiss you, taking your breath away in the process. You didn’t feel time moving as you kissed him but did feel the fear leaving your body. After spending the last eight months thinking all love ever did was break and burn and end, you felt it begin again. When you pulled away, you looked into Arvins eyes, no longer feeling like he was a stranger.
“Well I’ll be. Didn’t think I’d be seeing you ever again, toots. What are you doing here?” Your ex asked, making you and Arvin jump in surprise. You’d been so engrossed in each other that you hadn’t heard him walk up. Arvin could feel you shaking so he tightened his grip on your waist and shifted his body weight forward in a threatening way.
“What are we doing here? At the gas station? Take a fat fucking guess, dip shit. We’re putting gas in her car.” Arvin scoffed and looked at your ex like it was ridiculous to ask. You let out a shocked laugh and turned your face to the side to try and hide it. Your ex noticed the way Arvins arm was around you and his eyes darkened.
“I’m sorry, who the hell is this?” He asked you, the anger in his voice giving you flashbacks to worse times.
“Arvin Russel. Y/n’s boyfriend. And you are?” Arvin asked and held out a hand. You could tell this bothered your ex to hear you had a new boyfriend and felt your power come back to you. His face turned white as he looked at Arvin in shock. You tightened your grip on Arvin and looked up at him with a loving smile to really sell your story.
“Chuck Greenwood.” Chuck said and hesitantly shook Arvins hand. Arvin made sure to squeeze Chucks hand hard enough to make it hurt as he shook it.
“I didn’t realize you had a boyfriend.” Chuck said to you as he pulled his hand away from Arvin.
“Well I do.” You shrugged and leaned in Arvin. Chucks eyes brewed with jealousy as he watched the two of you.
“I guess I would’ve known that if you ever answered my calls. Must be too busy moving on. Which you did pretty fast, one might say. Didn’t realize you were such a quick girl.” Chuck said in a condescending tone.
“Fuck you, Chuck.” You scoffed, taking everyone by surprise.
“What did you just say to me?” Chuck raised his voice.
“Believe she said fuck you, Chuck.” Arvin repeated with a shrug.
“Yeah. I did. I don’t answer your calls cause I don’t want to hear your nasty, agitating voice no more. And I moved on fast because I knew the entire time that I was with you that I wanted something better for myself. So as soon as I got away from you, I went and found better. And you don’t get to be mad about that.” You stated. You weren’t shaking anymore but Arvin still kept his arm securely around your waist.
“Who do you think you’re talking to?” Chuck growled and stepped up to you.
“You.” You said and shoved him back. Chuck stumbled back in surprise before clenching his fist. Arvin got ready to fight, but you were one step ahead of him. You grabbed the diesel pump and aimed it at Chuck like it was a gun. Chuck was immediately disarmed and held up his hands.
“You don’t scare me no more. Especially not when you’re dressed like a candy cane.” You said in a low voice. Arvin smiled proudly that you used his insult and leaned against your car to watch you.
“Now get lost before I spray you.” You added and held the pump up higher. Chuck ran away from you, tripping over his own feet before getting into his car to drive away.
“Where did that come from?” Arvin laughed in surprise once you were alone again.
“I have no idea. But it felt really good.” You smiled in excitement as you put the pump back.
“I bet it did. I’m proud of you, darlin. I hope you’re proud of yourself too.” Arvin smiled fondly at you.
“You know, I am. Thanks for your help, Arvin. I couldn’t have done that without you.”
“You’re very welcome, miss. But I think you could’ve gotten along without me just fine. What’s the story with him anyway?”
“He works at the mechanic shop my daddy owns. I don’t have any brothers so Chuck was like a son to him. Was even gonna pass down the family business to him. When I finally told my parents how he’d been treating me…”
“They took his side?” Arvin asked, hoping the answer was no. Instead, you gave him a sad smile and nodded your head.
“My parents said all men were like that. Told me to suck it up and marry him anyway so that we’d have someone to give the family business to once my daddy was gone.”
“I’m sorry, darling. That’s no fair. No fair at all.”
“I know. And that wasn’t even the end of it. When I told my daddy I broke up with Chuck, he told me he never wanted to see me again. Haven’t spoken to him since.” You said with a sad shrug. Arvin frowned and felt the urge to pull you into a hug and tell you everything would be okay. Since you were still pretty much strangers, he just put a hand on your shoulder and gave it a squeeze.
“My daddy wasn’t a good man either. I know it hurts.” He said in a soft tone. You looked into Arvins eyes and could tell this was not an emotion he was used to exhibiting. You gave him an appreciative smile and put your hand over his.
“Something else we have in common then.” You smiled coyly.
“Maybe we should go out sometime. You know, see what else we have in common.” Arvin suggested as a blush painted his cheeks. You noticed this and felt your heart flutter in your chest. For the first time in a long time, you trusted someone new. You took a pen out of your pocketbook before taking Arvins hand and writing your number on his wrist.
“This is my number. I promise I’ll pick up.”
“I promise I’ll call.” He grinned as he read over the number.
“I should really get going. But it was very nice to meet you, Arvin.” You smiled warmly at him and unlocked your car. Arvin opened the door for you so that you could get in, convincing you further that giving him a chance was the right thing to do.
“Was nice to meet you too, doll.” Arvin smirked as he shut your car door for you. You gave him a wave and started your car before pulling away.
“Wait a minute.” Arvin called out and jogged after your car. You stopped the car and rolled down your window to look at him.
“Aren’t you gonna kiss your boyfriend goodbye?” He smiled coyly as he leaned down to your window. You playfully rolled your eyes at him before leaning out the window to kiss him. You knew it was crazy to be kissing a man you just met, even for the second time, but it felt right.
“Goodbye. I mean it this time.” You laughed and pulled away.
When you got home that night, your phone rang before you even had a chance to set your bag down. Your heart skipped a beat as you went over to answer it.
“Hello?” You said into the phone, hoping to hear Arvins voice again.
“Hey.” Arvin replied. “So am I gonna have to wait until the next time you need gas to see you or are you free tomorrow night?”

You couldn’t quite remember how long you and Arvin had been sneaking off together. It was a plan agreed on by the both of you. Rules you both made to make your lives easier. Nothing was ever going to be easy…so long as Arvin’s heart beat for yours. The thought alone always made you shake your head. Two halves that met under rather difficult circumstances. Arvin told you it was destiny, the way you met, the way you fell, the way you loved each other. Yet in your mind your love for each other was due for a reckoning. A doomed love story in the making. The love was a blessing, but the hate and the judgment you didn’t want to receive was the dooming. Questions and doubts clouded your thoughts every evening while you lay in bed. The ‘what ifs’ and ‘we can't’ bellowed in your head like a train on tracks. Roaring loudly. Telling you to get out before your life was over. You didn’t want to get out though…You wanted to stay, stay with Arvin, stay for the love, stay for the reckoning, stay for the change. You wanted to stay for the long run. That was the making you wanted to create. Not whatever every white man or woman had to say for it in this town. These folks didn’t know the way you had to live, how you had to think about everything you did when you left your house. They had it easy, they could live easy, get married easy, love easy. Everything was so damn easy for them it made you mad.
You pulled back the curtain keeping a lookout for the familiar roar of the engine of Arvin’s car you spent so much time in. You stepped back from the window and smoothed out your dress. Your mother would kill you if she caught you leaving her home with a wrinkle. No daughter of hers was going to look like she didn’t at least try.
“Y/n, tell me you’re not leaving with that boy again?” Your mother walked in the living room area with a hand on her hip.
“I am mama.” You looked up at her.
She sucked her teeth, shaking her head. “All he’s gonna do is bring you trouble.” Your mother wasn’t always so fond of the idea of you being with Arvin. She didn’t need a boy like Arvin messing up your lives.
“No he’s not. Arvin is good, mama, he always means well. He goes to church!” You tried defending him.
“Everybody goes to church, girl!” Your mother chuckled. You smiled then glanced down at your shoes.
Arvin’s car could be heard outside. You glanced up at your mother with a nervous look, just like you did every time he came to pick you up in the middle of the night. If it was daytime, that would have been riskier, too much sunlight, too many people with judgmental eyes. You wouldn’t be able to handle it all.
Your mother sighed sensing your anxiousness. “Just be careful alright, don’t be home late.” She walked up to you to adjust the collar of your dress. “Tell Arvin I say hello.” She pressed a kiss to your temple and gripped your hands tightly.
“I will mama.” You smiled at her to reassure her worries, her concerns. She watched as you opened the door and walked out. You gave her one last glance and descended down the three steps on your porch and onto the dirt.
Noticing you approaching the car, Arvin quickly put out his cigarette and got out of the car walking over to your side. You squealed as he spun you around a bit in his arms. Arvin’s favorite time was affection time. Any given moment or chance to shower you with kisses and physical contact, he’d take it. Nothing was going to stop him from denying you his love.
“Hi darlin’.“ He chuckled as he dug his face into the side of your neck. “I missed ya.” He sighed deeply, tightening his embrace on you.
“Missyatoo…Arvin,” You mumble out as you let your hands rest on his back. “Arvin.” You looked up, staying still. “Arvin, I can die if I don’t breathe ya know?” You chuckled as he instantly loosened his grip on you.
“Can’t have ya dying on me. Too darn pretty to be in a casket.” Arvin caressed the side of your face. You could feel your cheeks get warm.
“You always say that.”
“Cause it’s true.” Arvin smiled. “Darlin’ ain’t nobody in this world that is as pretty as ya.” He leaned in to press a tender kiss to your lips.
“And there ain’t nobody in this world that says it like you do.” You giggle. “Let’s get going.” You began looking around you watching out for any onlookers or night walkers. You relaxed your shoulders when you saw no one. “Oh and my mama says hi.” You smiled.
Arvin quickly opened the door for you and waited till you got in and situated to close it. “Hello.” He grinned.
Then he got in himself.
The engine roared to life waiting to get its gas going to start the fifteen minute ride to the woods.
The only place where you and Arvin could be. Where no racist soul was bound to find you two showing your devotion for each other.
-
Once Arvin reached your spot. He quickly rolled up the windows and took the keys out of the hole. You smiled when he beckoned you over to him. Finding your place on his lap. Nothing sexual ever, only the tenderness of the pads of his fingers slowly tracing invisible designs across your skin. You closed your eyes as he printed kisses on you. Leaving behind that lingering feeling of his lips.
You opened them back up to stare at the man you’ve grown to love. To call yours, your partner.
“Do you ever get tired of it?” You broke the silence.
“Spending time with ya? No.” Arvin chuckled as he leaned forward pecking your cheek causing you to smile.
“Not that.” You playfully hit his shoulder pad covered by that jean jacket you loved on him.
“The hiding…” You trailed off.
“Yea darlin’ but you know what will happen if-”
“If everyone finds out, I know, I know.” You frowned, you smoothed out the edges of your dress, trying to remove any wrinkles. Arvin tilted his head to try and catch your eyes. “I…I just wanna be able to hold your hand. In public ya know…not in the woods, Arvin.” You sniffled. “I get…I get that people will have their own opinions, or do terrible things, but….” Arvin frowned, reaching up to wipe away your tears. “How long can we keep this up?” You shook your head.
“Hey now, none of that sad talkin’ now.” He cupped your face. “Darlin’ fuck what any of those no good sons of bitches have to say.” He pressed his head against yours. “And if they do say somethin’, well then I’ll find the right time, and set em’ straight.” Arvin jokes.
“Arvin…” You halfheartedly laughed, shaking your head. “Violence isn’t the right way to go about this.” You touched his hand on your cheeks. “What would your sister say, or even your grandma?”
“I’ll set them straight to….” He paused then smiled, causing you to relax.
“It ain’t funny!” You exclaimed, punching his arm.
“Ouch.” He furrowed his brows then chuckled. “Alright, I’m only kidding darlin’.” He turned your chin to look at him. “But I’m serious, I’ll beat the crap out of them assholes who got somethin’ to say about you...about us.”
“Wouldn’t do you any good beating someone up for nothing…” You smirked.
He raised his brow confused. “They don’t know about us silly…” You chuckled when he rolled his eyes. “You’d look like a fool.”
“That does it, come here.” Arvin grunted playfully as he turned you over on your back, you thought that was all he was going to do, but the surprise came when he started tickling you.
“Arvin…no stop!” You laughed trying to remove his hands off you.
“It ain’t funny, eh?” He teased as he continued running his fingertips across your sides.
“No…” You laughed. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.” Your laughter filled his ears like music. Arvin stopped his tickle assault and hovered over you. You took a deep breath trying to control your heavy breathing.
“I love you, Y/n.” He leaned down and pressed his lips against yours. You smiled tugging at the nape of his curls.
“I love you too Arvin.”
You savored the moment of being with Arvin. There would be days where you two would go a few days without seeing one another. That was torture enough.
It had been bad enough that his grandmother set him up with a girl from his church. She was a cute little thing, as Arvin would say, but not his type. He didn’t take a liking to the poor brunette. He couldn’t find it in himself to enjoy being with her. Not when his heart soared for yours. However, to keep you two a secret, he continued to go on dates with the girl. Much to your dislike.
No world was worth living without Arvin. He understood you like no other person did. Not even at school were they as loving as Arvin was. They’d call you names, tell you how you didn’t belong there. Telling you that dating a white man was gonna do you no good. Not that they’d tell anybody, which you were grateful for. Arvin could recall the times where he’d find you crying behind your school when he’d go and pick you up.
He’d find Lenora in a similar state at his school, but that’s another story for another time. The boys at least learned their lessons. They wouldn’t bother Lenora anymore, but the bullies at yours still bothered you. Yet unlike the way he got back at the boys for Lenora, you’d beg him not to hurt anyone for you, no matter how much they had emotionally hurt you. Although the second any of them laid their hands on you, he’d go back on his word, his promise he made, and hurt them.
“Darlin’ you know…I’d love to tell everyone you’re my girl, but it’d be too risky.” Arvin peered down at you. “There are people who ain’t right in the head, who won’t understand us.” Arvin sighed. “They won’t have it. They’ll…They’ll kill you, kill me.” Arvin sighed.
“All the more to stay a secret huh…” You smiled sadly. “I wish we didn’t have to hide. Do you ever think they’ll be a future where this will be okay?” You stared up at Arvin. He furrowed his brows at your question. Was there really gonna be a future where he could love you in public? Out in the open for everyone to see. He moved his head down to place his lips on yours.
“I think so darlin’, I really do, but we might be too old when it finally becomes okay. We’d have lived a happy long life together in secret. We’d be sittin’ in rocking chairs by then. Whether it became okay or not wouldn’t matter to us by then.” Arvin smiled sadly letting his thoughts be the answer to your question.
“I’m okay with that Arvin, just as long as I got you.” You nodded as your eyes gleamed with tears. You arched your back to press a sweet kiss to his lips.
You knew nothing good would come of this. Not as long as you and Arvin stayed together. It was a cruel world you lived in. One where no one could see two people in love, and instead see two different skin colors. One who’d have no harm come their way, and the other to receive hatred and hostility just for being who they were.
Arvin always asked you what was so wrong with loving you. Nothing was wrong about it. In fact his love for you wasn’t the problem, loving someone wasn’t going to get his ass beaten by anyone. It was the racial discrimination that you had to battle. A battle, that’s what it was…
You liked to joke around with Arvin sometimes. Laughing’ over the idea of being these warriors in love in the midst of a war. You could recall a story you read in one of your books at the library, once, about two gods. One named Venus and one named Mars. Not so much about planets but more so about two people. Two people in love with a secret.
The tale of the two was rather interesting. There was Venus, the Goddess of Love, and Mars, the God of War, but the story seemed to have relevance to your and Arvin’s situation.
Venus, who was betrothed to Vulcan, Roman God of Fire, found him to be quite dull and ordinary, which led to her having an affair with Mars. He was different. You felt that Venus pertained more to Arvin’s situation with that Anna girl, who he was pretending to be with. From what he liked to tell you, she fit the ideal image of what Vulcan was like. Although you could argue that you and Arvin could relate to the gods based on their characteristics.
Mars, son of Jupiter and Juno, was unpopular with everyone. He liked to fight, although whether he won or lost mattered little to none. He just liked trouble and wreaking havoc. Arvin felt a lot like this, struggling with his own internal battles, and finding the right time to pick a fight with someone who did him or his family wrong. He’d get a black eye for it sometimes, but he’d make sure those who wronged him would get what was coming to them. There was no doubt he was beginning to be the talk of the town.
Venus was an entirely different story. She was born in the sea. Unlike Mars, she was not into creating havoc, but caused it if someone scorned her vanity. You remembered on multiple accounts where you had begged Arvin not to pick a fight over you, or for you. Violence was the last thing you wanted in a place like West Virginia. Nothing right about it. There was no use for it, but others seemed to want violence to occur. Someone wanting to start and wreak havoc somewhere. You surely weren’t about to take part in any of it, but if you had to…you would. You didn’t think you could have something to relate to.
Multiple love stories filled with unrealistic outcomes, unrealistic people. You strived to find a story that you could see yourself in. Venus and Mars’ story happened to be it. The idea of Vulcan wanting to expose Venus and Mars then both humiliating them in front of the other gods on Mount Olympus, stirred something within you. If you and Arvin were to be exposed or outed by someone, everything would fall down hill. The reckoning of all reckonings would occur and lead to more problems you didn’t need nor have the time for.
It was only a matter of time before something happened…before someone found out.
-
After a night of fooling around. Arvin dropped you back home and made his way back home. The drive back with the radio playing some familiar tune was nice to enjoy. It was hard to enjoy the little things. He had taken up responsibilities as he got older. He made it his sole purpose to look after Lenora, to look after you. He cared so much, he found it hard to see past his inner demons that haunted him. His childhood haunting him like a second hand slap to the face. It always came back. Thoughts and memories he couldn’t forget would come back. He wanted them to go away. You didn’t go away though. He could recall the first couple times he found himself being allured by your beauty, by your quick wit and intelligence. You were a rare beautiful sight to see. He felt as though it was illegal to look at you with his own eyes. You made him nervous, Arvin was hardly the nervous type. You understood him like no one else. When he had to scream you yelled along with him. When he had to cry, you shed tears too. You were meant for each other. Despite the way things were and how things existed, he knew, in his heart, that the universe made no mistake introducing you two.
Arvin cut the engine when he made it back home. He stayed in the car for a bit longer trying to conjure up a new lie to tell his grandma, sister and uncle this time. Though they never really worried about where he was just as long as he didn’t go stirring up trouble. Though his grandma did worry occasionally.
He released a big breath and turned the engine off and headed inside. His work boots thumping against the ground of his porch. The creeks made noise below him with each step he took. Almost like the anticipation was building up slowly as he opened the front door and walked through the threshold.
When he had closed the door behind him he noticed that some of the lights were turned on. He hadn’t thought much of it, but he did notice how his uncle wasn’t asleep on the sofa bed like he usually was. He stepped deeper into the house trying to find anyone. Arvin had made a move to go to his room. He removed his cap and was going to toss it onto his bed when he halted as he had passed the kitchen. He stepped back and turned at the opening of the kitchen. All three of them lifted their heads to stare at the boy. Arvin gulped as he realized their expressions read anything but happy to see him.
“W-What are ya doin’ up?” He eyed the two women who had appeared to be looking at something on the table. “It’s pretty late ain’t it?”
His uncle was smoking a joint not giving the boy another glance.
“Arvin, come here please.”
“Something the matter, grandma?” He slowly stepped forward to the end of the table.
“Yes Arvin, something is wrong.” Grandma Emma casted her gaze down to the picture that lay on the table. She hesitated touching it, then quickly pushed it away towards Arvin. She grabbed a hold onto Lenora’s hands who hadn’t said a word. “Care to explain that?” She gestured to the picture.
Arvin finally understood what all the fuss was about. He could feel his heart pumping loudly in his ears as he slowly reached down to pick up the picture. The one picture of you he had that he took care of so much.
“Grandma-” He began but she cut him off.
“You’re seeing a-” She tried saying it but she couldn’t find it in herself. “How could you do this to us? Do you know what will happen if word gets out.” She exclaimed.
“That’s probably why he’s been goin’ out so much, he’s probably sneaking-” Lenora pointed out.
“Shut up Lenora!” Arvin clenched his jaw.
“Have you been seeing that girl all this time?” Emma looked hurt.
“Grandma please listen-” Arvin pleaded.
“I just don’t understand how this could-”
“Grandma I can explain-”
“-happen. What about Anna, huh? That poor girl…Have I taught you nothing boy because-”
“I LOVE HER!” Arvin shouted over his grandma.
She gasped as she looked at him with wide eyes. This time his uncle finally looked at him. He removed the cigar from his mouth and put it out.
“Excuse me?”
“I love her grandma.” Arvin could feel water build up in his eyes. “This girl right here.” He lifted the picture and made it face his family. “I love her so much and this is exactly why I didn’t tell anybody.” Arvin began crying as he explained himself. “Y/n and I are so scared that something terrible will happen, and I don’t know what I’d do if anything happened to her, grandma. I love her…and I don’t care if you like it or not.” He let his arms fall to his side. He was tired. The three of them shared a look then stared up at Arvin.
“Alright then…” Grandma Emma nodded.
“Alright then?” Arvin furrowed his brows. “That’s it…”
“Alright then.” Grandma Emma nodded her head.
“You’re okay with this?”
“We’re not happy with that fact you didn’t tell us.” His uncle finally spoke up. “But this is your life boy, do what ya want with it, and if this Y/n girl makes ya happy then alright then.” His uncle slapped the side of his forearm.
“What’d ya think we were gonna do Arvin?” Lenora asked.
“I don’t know…” Arvin breathed out.
“Don’t think too low of us boy, we ain’t bad people here. We’re ya family, remember that.” His uncle eyed him.
“Yeah.” Arvin was slowly letting his guard down again. He finally looked up to eye his grandma who was having a hard time looking at him. “Grandma?” He lifted his eyebrows at her.
“Tell us things next time, Arvin.” Grandma Emma finally looked up at him. “Your momma raised you well boy.” A smile slowly making its way to her lips. “Do you know if Y/n likes homemade Beef Bourguignon or fudge cake?” She stared up at the boy nervously. This caused Arvin to smile.
“As a matter of fact she does, Grandma.” Arvin let out a breathy laugh. “Why’d ya ask?”
“I’d like to meet the girl who makes my grandson smile so much?” Grandma Emma shrugged.
“I’ll ask her.” He nodded.
“Does Y/n like books?” Lenora seemed to ask out of nowhere. It wasn’t a secret that Lenora had a hard time making friends. Maybe this could be her chance at making one who didn’t pick on her for being Arvin’s step-sister.
“She loves them, Lenora.” Arvin smiled fondly at the thought of you reading to him on one of your nightly dates in the woods. Lenora gently smiled and nodded.
Silence fell over the four of them as they all came to a middle ground. No more arguing, no more secrets. They knew and he could relax a little more. They were going to meet you and that’s all he wanted. He was so scared of them being against the idea of him being with you, but they weren’t and it made him so happy.
“You guys will love her.” Arvin smiled nodding.
“If you do Arvin, then I know we will too.” His uncle smiled up at the boy.

winter blurbs 2.0 ❄️ | 2.0 masterlist ❄️
Tumblr media
it had been a week of you living at the russell house after your parents decided to split up. lenora, your best friend had been kind enough to provide you with a roof over your head. emma was a very supportive lady and you needed that sort of environment to overcome the fact that your parents were going to legally part ways. sometimes she would hold you when you cried because the pain of seperation was nothing new to her. it reminded the old lady of the time her son went to war and she longed for any information of his whereabouts.
sometimes you cried at nights alone in bed while everyone was asleep. you stayed in under your blankets and pressed a hand over your mouth to muffle your own sobs.
on monday you finally went to school with lenora. after a whole week of missing school, your friends were happy to see you but gene dinwoodie and his gang were constantly teasing you about your parents’ situation.
you couldn’t face the humiliation as you rushed out of the school halfway. you walked the whole way back, sobbing and wiping the trail of tears that covered your face every once in a while.
you assumed no one would be home because emma mentioned that earskell would be driving her to the grocery store across town to get some stuff for her special meal on lenora’s upcoming birthday.
but you were proven wrong when you saw arvin standing on the porch next to his uncle’s rocking chair, smoking a cigarette.
he stood up straighter, putting out his cigarette as soon as he saw you.
you never really saw arvin around the house, just carrying groceries for emma and helping repair something around the house but you were almost sure you had spent more time in the house in a week that you stayed there than he did in eight years.
“what’s wrong?” he pointed to your tear stained cheeks and red eyes.
“nothing.” you replied, walking inside the house to avoid a conversation.
you thought he wouldn’t care any further but he followed you inside, “kids at school bothering you?”
“it doesn’t matter really.” you said, placing the books you were carrying on the dining table. you saw arvin disappear into the kitchen and felt bad about talking to him rudely. he was just being nice.
you were about to follow him into the kitchen but he came back with a glass of water. you took it from his hands, flashing him a little smile, and took a sip of water.
“if you want i can beat ‘em up for you.” he shrugged so casually it made you laugh.
after that day arvin and you became friends too and you noticed a lot more of him in the house. you noticed him helping lenora and you with homework, being in kitchen– even if he didn’t work much– with the three of you, eating at the table with everyone. you also noticed his room was right next to the one you were staying in.
after almost three weeks of living with the russell’s, you found a letter in the mailbox addressed to you. it was your mom’s. it was quite early in the morning, you hadn’t gone to school with lenora and you were sure no one was home so you carried the letter to your room, got under your covers and tore it open, reading it.
she had apologised for their constant bickering in that letter and asked you to stay with her once the divorce was settled. you sniffled, placing the letter at your bedside table.
the sudden knock at your door caught you off guard. arvin’s cap was the first thing you noticed as he entered the room partially, “everything okay?” he asked, voice deeper than his usual pitch. you probably woke him up.
“y-yeah, everything is fine.” you wiped your face with your sleeves.
“we got thin walls.” he said, entering the room fully now, “is everything okay?”
you nod your head, “mama sent me a letter, calling me back.”
“you don’t want that?” he rubbed his eyes, walking closer and sitting at the edge of your bed, close to your feet.
“what?”
“to leave here?”
you weren’t sure how to answer that. you wanted to go stay with your mother but something was holding you back too. you wondered if it was emma’s sweet nature, or getting to stay with lenora, or if it was arvin. the possibility made your heard flutter.
instead of saying any of that, you just chose to go with, “it won’t be the same without him there. my daddy.”
arvin placed a hand over yours, which was nervously fidgeting in your lap. he held it and looked into your eyes, “it’s gonna be alright.”
those words felt like everything you needed to hear. you nodded, giving him a smile. the two of you sat there in solitude until arvin’s words cut through the silence, “can i sleep with you?”
you could feel the drowsiness in his voice. instead of wording an answer, you simply lifted your blanket, inviting him to lay with you.
you two laid down, arvin hesitantly placing an arm around your waist. you shuffled closer to him, wrapping your arm around his shoulder until his head chin was resting over your head and your face was nestled into his chest.
you were enveloped in arvin, “oh, you’re so warm, don’t even let go of me.” the brunette mumbled, reading your thoughts. his eyes were closed and expressions the definition of calm when you looked up to read his face.
maybe arvin russell was the only reason you wanted to stay.

On the run after shooting Bodecker and fleeing Knockemstiff, Arvin finds himself in Bowling Green, Ohio. It’s nothing but flat fields and corn as far as the eye can see.
The town’s small but not too small, with the added bonus of the local university being a great cover story. All he has to say is he’s a student, and any probing questions resolve themselves.
Before long he sets himself up as a part-time laborer on a dairy farm while working towards his ‘degree.’ The thing is… the farmer has the prettiest little wife he’s ever seen. Always greets him with soft hands, tender eyes and a honey-sweet smile. How could he not want you all to himself?
It’s also clear there’s no love lost between your husband and you, the air always rippling with tension. A marriage that’s over before either party’s realized it.
Maybe it’s the baby, maybe it’s the farm, maybe it’s just two people who were never right for each other in the first place. Regardless of the reason, Arvin knows you’re not being treated the way you deserve.
But it’s gonna be alright because he’s here. You won’t have to cry yourself to sleep anymore. He’s more than willing to give you everything a woman wants - ready to cherish every inch of you he can.
And once the both of you are ready to move on, he’ll find a nice place to settle down and start a family of your own.
The only hiccup is that he has to convince you of how good it’ll be first. Change is scary but he’s patient. You’ll see it was all for the best in the end. There’s no need to cling to your old life when he’s offering something so much better.
Which is how you find yourself ambushed in the middle of the night by your deceptively sweet farmhand. He seemed like such a charmer, albeit sullen. Now he’s been here for months and refuses to leave you be. Always chasing after you with boundless passion and heady desire.
You’ve learned that once he gets his hands on you, there’s no getting free until he’s satisfied.
“Mm, yeah, that’s it, darlin’. Been wantin’ to do this all afternoon. Fuck - ya looked so pretty in that sundress.”
Teeth sink into the meat of your thumb, blood bursting iron sharp across your tastebuds. You whimper, muffled and needy as your back arches, your shoulder blades grinding into the oceanic wallpaper your husband helped pick out when you moved into the farmhouse.
Arvin presses you into the wall so hard it’s difficult to catch a breath, his chest a firm line of heat against your front. Weak hands shove at his broad shoulders but he doesn’t even flinch, his frame solid and unyielding.
“Always smell so good for me.” He looms over you, his head tucked into the curve of your throat as his teeth work at the flutter of your pulse. “My pretty, pretty baby.”
“Arvin, I said no marks…” Your hips jerk against his, a flush of shame heating your belly when you feel how wet your pussy is against his thigh. “I’m running out of makeup. Won’t be able to hide them.”
“Good.”
His words are a rumbled growl in your ear, his breath puffing over the sensitive shell. His hands capture the curves of your waist when you try to squirm away, steel bands that shackle you in place.
“Let ‘im see, let ‘im know his pretty little wife’s pussy belongs to me.”
A flare of heat kindles to life low in your belly, liquid desire settling between your thighs. You hate how much his words get to you, how desperate you get for his touch. He never takes no for an answer, just bulldozes right on in as he pleases.
The initiative shouldn’t be as flattering as you find it. But between juggling your baby, your husband, and the farm, your needs have fallen by the wayside. You can’t even remember the last time your husband touched you willingly.
“Arvin, please, I…”
If it’s a plea to stop or a plea to keep pushing you to your limits, you don’t know. This persistent young man has seen fit to invade every aspect of your life in such a short amount of time. You’re not sure you recognize the person you’re becoming under him.
A kneecap grinds into your aching clit.
“Arv-hhn…” you pant, burying your head in his shoulder. The fabric of his t-shirt is soft against your lips. “Can’t - can’t…”
“Shh,” he says, rocking up into the cradle of your thighs, his voice a low croon that hooks behind your navel and tugs. “Ya can, I know ya can, darlin’. Doin’ so good for me.”
The tidal wave of pleasure crashes through you, ebbing flows that tease at your nerve endings until you’re sobbing in his arms. Muffled sounds ring out through the empty hall, shattering the midnight silence. Your legs tremble with the effort of holding your weight, your hips flexing with aborted thrusts.
He plasters your bodies together from hip to sternum, the momentum of his teasing grinds never faltering. So firm and warm and right where you want it…
“Better be quiet if you’re so worried,” Arvin says.“They’ll hear ya and then what’ll ya do? Your precious husband’ll see his slut of a wife hanging off another man’s cock.”
You swallow, the filthy works sparking a shiver of delight. You clench, a rush of slick wetting the seat of your panties. And that’s perhaps the worst thing about all of this - how much your body craves his touch.
Ashamed, your eyes slam closed but not before you catch Arvin’s gaze, his eyes half-lidded and impossibly dark with hunger.
“Oh, is that what you’ve been hidin’ from me, darlin’?”
He breathes, his long fingers reaching up to caress the soft swell of your breast. He drops kisses along the curve of your jaw with a pleased little hum, and circles the peak of your nipple through the thin camisole.
“Ya want ‘im to see, ya want ‘im to know how wet ya get for me - don’t ya?”
Your answer sounds in the form of a moan.
He smirks, a devilish curve to his lips, “Mm, why don’t we show ‘im then?”
Your eyes snap open, immediately desperate for an altogether different reason. Your stomach drops at the look of utter satisfaction on Arvin’s face. Before you can beg and plead, two fingers wrap around your nipple and squeeze hard. Try as you might, you can’t bite back the utterly wrecked noise that claws its way out of your throat, echoing loud.
Wetness trickles from your breast, dribbles down your skin and sticks your sleep shirt to you. The colour of your areola peeks through the milk-soaked fabric. But you don’t have time to worry about leaking through another shirt because there’s no way your husband didn’t hear that. You’re in the hall right outside the master bedroom.
The bed creaks. “You all right out there?” your husband calls.
“Arvin, get out of here.” He doesn’t budge. You smack his chest with a hollow thump. “Damnit, Arvin, go!”
Another rough tug of his fingers, and you’re weak-kneed. Fuzzy-headed. More milk dribbles from your tender nipple. You hiss at the overstimulation, little sparks of pain in the pleasure.
Devil black, and delicious.
About to cry, you can’t help jerking over his thigh one last time just to feel the drag of your slick folds. And then you’re trying to squirm out of his ironclad hold. You both know it’s in vain - if he doesn’t want you to go anywhere, you won’t - but you put up a fight all the same.
“Please, go.”
His breath stutters from him, his eyes burning into yours as he sucks off the milk clinging to his fingertips. You always look the prettiest to him when you cry, your eyes glassy and desperate for something only he can give you. He grinds close so he can feel every inch of your softness.
“Just as sweet as always.”
“Arvin,” you say with a shake of your head. “He can’t see you.”
“I will this time,” his eyes are shards of flint when he holds your gaze, his mouth a set line of tension, “But ya can’t run from me. I’m gettin’ real tired of hidin’ an’  of sharin’. You’re mine, he just doesn’t know it yet.”
Before any more can be said, the pressure of Arvin’s body against yours disappears in a great rush of air. You shiver, reaching up to fix your strap just as the door to the bedroom swings open and your husband pokes his head out. He calls your name, his eyes squinting through the dark.
“Woman, the hell you doin’ out here?”
“Nothing, just,” you start, off-kilter, “just getting something to drink.”
You’ve never been more thankful you married a man with poor eyesight. If he saw the evidence of your indiscretion… your trembling thighs, the dampened crotch of your shorts, nipples peeking through the ruined tank top… there’d be no saving it.
“Ya sure? Thought I heard a yelp.”
The words taste like ash when you smile and say, “Mhm… kicked that side table again.”
His chuckle sounds, the shape of his body turning back into the room. “Maybe we should get a damn nightlight for the hall then.” He turns back to look at you. “Ya comin’?”
“Y-Yeah, be there in a minute, sweetie.” You don’t hear his response, too focused on the phantom hands gliding along your thighs, cupping your cunt and playing with your dripping folds. “I need to go to the bathroom.”
Smoke and faded cologne tease your senses, moist lips skimming the side of your face as Arvin whispers a promise into your skin, “See ya tomorrow, darlin’.”

Arvin watched as you paced down the driveway towards his car, it was obvious already that you were exhausted. You were slouched over, your hair, which had been down when he dropped you off, was now tied in a messy ponytail. Arvin leaned over to open the door for you as you approached the car.
“Hey sunshine,” he smiled, “Why the sour face?”
You shot him the dirtiest look he’d ever seen as you climbed into the passenger seat, “We are never, ever having kids.”
He laughed, “That bad?”
You nodded, “You have no idea. They were acting crazy all day, Jonathan started screaming if I put him down for even a second, and I couldn’t get Henry to sit down for anything. I mean even during lunch he kept getting up and running around.”
“I’m sorry darlin’,” he frowned and kissed the back of your hand, “Why don’t we skip the river today? We can just head back to mine or yours so you can rest for a while.”
“No, no, I still wanna go,” you insisted, “I’m sure you already packed food up and everything…”
“I did, but we still don’t have to go.”
“I want to, I’m sure I’ll feel better after I eat and sit down for a while,” you scooted into the middle seat of his truck and kissed his cheek.
“Alright,” he grinned, “But let me know if you change your mind.”
“Yay,” you cheered, snuggling into his side as he pulled onto the road.
Arvin set his hand on your leg but almost instantly retracted it, his face contorting to disgust, “Why are you sticky?”
“Oh god,” you groaned and looked down at your legs, they looked fine but when you touched them they were sticky, “I let the boys have some popsicles, I thought I got it all off of me,” you cringed as you poked your leg, “That’s disgusting.”
Arvin started to laugh, “Don’t worry, you can rinse off in the river.”
You sighed and leaned back against the car seat, “You better have packed some good food.”
“Don’t worry, I made us some sandwiches, and I went to that bakery downtown and got some of those little cakes you like,” he reached over for you again, running the back of his fingers down your cheek, “You could close your eyes for a minute pretty girl.”
“I’m okay,” you assured, turning lazily towards him, “You’re the best boyfriend in the world, you know that?”
“I try my best,” he lifted his arm, giving you room to snuggle up underneath it, “Now come here, sticky or not, I like having you close.”
“Aw,” you cooed as he wrapped his arm around you.
You turned your attention to the road ahead of you. The town started to fade away, being replaced with dense trees and only the occasional home as you krept closer and closer to the river. Arvin was driving out further than he usually he did, wanting to make sure that you two wouldn’t run into anyone while you were out. It was a special day, he wanted to keep it just the two of you.
“Here we are,” he grinned as he pulled into a small dirt parking lot. A large sign advertised some kind of hiking trail, “Looks like it’s just us.”
“Yay,” you grinned.
Arvin passed you the picnic blanket as he climbed out of the car. He took the basket of food and your hand and led you down a thin dirt trail. It was hot, and you were tired, but Arvin promised you it wasn’t a far walk. He half jokingly offered you a piggyback ride, but you had a little too much pride to accept it.
“Here we are,” he grinned as you two stumbled into a small alcove.
The river bank was all rock and grass, it was much more serene than the dirt banks closer to your home. You spread the blanket out on the grass and happily fell down on top of it. You kicked off your shoes and spread your arms out over the blanket. Arvin laughed and set the basket down beside you. You watched with a smile as he lifted his shirt over his head, leaving him in just his swim trunks.
“I would whistle if I wasn’t so tired,” you grinned up at him.
He smiled and tossed his shirt at your face, “There, you can have a souvenir.”
You rolled your eyes and pushed his shirt off you, “Come on, I already have a million of those.”
“Cause you’re a thief,” he pinched your chin and opened up the basket, “You still hungry sweetheart?”
“I’m starved,” you rubbed your grumbling stomach with a smile, “Sandwiches right?”
He nodded and set a paper plate in your lap, “Yeah, I put a lot of hard work into them so you better enjoy.”
Your eyes widened excitedly as he presented the sandwich to you, “Don’t worry, I plan on it.”
The sandwich tasted divine after the long day you’d had. You were eternally grateful that you had a boyfriend who didn’t mind sitting quietly while you ate. Arvin was always happy just to be near you, and he didn’t mind at all if you wanted to sit in silence after a long day. He would just sit beside you and peck at his food, watching you watch the river.
“This is nice,” you hummed, “The river’s beautiful.”
“You’re beautiful,” Arvin pecked your cheek.
You flushed and turned to him, “You don’t have to be so sweet all the time Arvin.”
“Well sure I do, it’s what you deserve,” he nuzzled his nose against your cheek, “How’s the sandwich?”
“Amazing,” you groaned before shoving the last bite into your mouth.
“Save room for dessert,” he laughed, “You really were starving huh?”
You nodded, “You have no idea, I had no time to eat while I was chasing the kids, I thought I was about to wither away.”
“My poor girl,” he flashed a pout, “You know when we have kids I’m sure they’ll be much sweeter to you than the boys are. They’ll save all the screaming and running around for me.”
“The boys are sweet Arvin, they’re just kids,” you cracked a small smile, “And I’m sure our kids will terrorize us equally.”
“Well probably, but I was trying to make you feel better,” he chuckled and peeked into the basket beside him, “You want your cake now sweetheart?”
You hummed and nodded, “Yeah, I think I do.”
“Great, just one thing first,” his cheeks dusted pink, “I know you said you didn’t want to do gifts but I couldn’t help myself…”
“Arvin,” you scolded.
“Yeah, yeah, I know,” he waved his hand at you and reached into the basket, pulling out a small black, velvet box, “It’s small, don’t worry.”
You tried to fight your smile as he placed the box in your lap, “Now I feel bad, I should have got you something.”
“I don’t need anything sweetheart, I just like seeing you happy,” he kissed your cheek, “Go ahead and open it.”
“I am, have some patience,” you giggled and pulled the box open.
Inside was a simple silver chain with a small heart charm hanging off of it. The charm had been delicately carved with both of your initials. It was absolutely gorgeous, your mouth fell open in disbelief.
“You like it?” he questioned.
You quickly nodded, “I love it Arvin, this is so beautiful.”
He let out a relieved breath, “Thank goodness. You have no clue how nervous I was.”
“I love it,” you repeated, pulling him in for a quick kiss, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he set both his hands over yours, “Can I help you put it on?”
“Yes, please,” you nodded eagerly.
Arvin crawled behind you and swept your hair to the side. He took the necklace from the box and wrapped it around your neck. He carefully clasped it behind you and pressed his lips to your neck.
“There,” he pulled away with a content hum, “I think it looks pretty, silver looks good on you.”
You nodded in agreement, “It’s perfect.”
“I’m glad you like it,” he ran his hand over your collar with a smile, “Happy anniversary sweetheart.”
“Happy anniversary,” you cooed back and wrapped your arms around his neck, “Have I ever told you how handsome you are?”
“A few times,” he nuzzled his nose against your cheek and started trailing kisses up your jaw, “How about we head in the water? It’s hot out here.”
“You can head in, I think I’m gonna lay down for a minute,” you patted his chest and flattened out the blanket, “Just a minute though, don’t let me fall asleep.”
“Why are you laying down if you don’t wanna fall asleep?” he laughed.
“I just wanna rest a minute,” you laid your head in his lap, “You can get in if you want.”
“No, no, I’ll stay here,” he ran his hand through your hair, “You rest.”
Your eyes fell heavy as you watched the river in front of you. The soothing sound of the water and Arvin’s hand in your hair were urging you to sleep, but you were determined to stay awake. You wanted to enjoy the river and actually get in the water for a while, you could sleep later, when you were curled up in bed with your boyfriend.
“You still wanna stay awake pretty girl?” Arvin cooed, noticing you starting to drift off in his lap.
“Yeah,” you mumbled, “I’m gonna get up and we’re gonna go swim.”
He smiled to himself, “Why don’t you get up then?”
“I will, I will,” you promised, “It’s only been a minute.”
“No,” he peaked at his watch, “It’s been almost an hour.”
You looked up at him, “No it hasn’t.”
“Yes, it has,” he chuckled, “You keep drifting off and waking up. You know we can always go home if you’re that tired, the river will still be here tomorrow.”
“I want to swim,” you insisted, slowly pushing yourself off his lap, “I gotta get my dress off.”
Arvin’s lips tugged to a smirked as you attempted to reach back and unzip your dress, “Let me help,” he gently tugged your zipper down to free you from the dress, “There you go.”
“Thank you,” you pulled the dress up and over your head and folded it up in your lap.
Arvin stood, taking just a moment to admire you in your swimsuit, “You coming?”
You yawned and nodded, “Yeah, just a sec.”
“I told you, we can always go home,” he offered again.
“I’m coming,” you tried to push yourself up, only for you to fall back down. Your left leg, which you’d been laying on top of, was totally numb, “Ouch,” you grunted as you fell back down.
Arvin started laughing, “Forget how to stand sweetheart?”
“No,” you groaned, “Help me, my leg is asleep,” you extended your arms towards him, expecting him to help you stand back up.
“Poor girl,” he clicked his tongue and bent down in front of you, “Let me help.”
He hoisted you into the air suddenly, pulling you in close to his chest as he stood. You squealed and clung to his neck, “Arvin put me down!” you demanded through a fit of giggles.
“You asked for help, I’m helping,” he laughed in response as he approached the water.
“You know that’s not what I meant,” you continued giggling as he entered the water.
“The water feels nice,” he dipped you down so your feet grazed the water.
You shivered at the sensation and stretched to try and dip your legs the rest of the way in, “Come on, let me get in.”
“Oh you mean put you down?” Arvin cocked his head, pretending not to know what you wanted as he waded deeper.
“Yes dork, so I can swim.”
“Ah,” he hummed, “I could do that, but I sort of like having you close,” he kissed your cheek, “You know you might be able to convince me to let you go though.”
“And how would I do that?” you smiled as he pulled you into the water with him, “A kiss maybe?”
“A kiss might do it,” he nodded.
“Okay,” you cupped his face in your hands, running your thumbs over his cheeks before you pressed his lips to his.
He smiled into the kiss, gently squeezing your body against his. His grip on you loosened and he let you slip out of his arms. Slowly you pulled away, looking up at him with a big smile. He pressed a kiss to the tip of your nose, then to your forehead.
“You know you’re too cute for your own good sunshine,” he purred.
“Well you’re too handsome for your own good,” you hummed in response.
“As long as I’m handsome enough for you to stick around that’s all I care about,” he ran his thumb over your bottom lip, “You better start swimming if that’s what you wanna do sweetheart, otherwise I’m gonna start kissing you again.”
“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” you took his hand and leaned back into the water, “I think we’ve got time for both.”

Goth Farmer
Tumblr media
Goth: horror themes, mysterious and dark, mysterious Farmer: rural, tractors and machinery, animals, traditional
Here is my submission for @the-slumberparty's What's Your Aesthetic graphic challenge. I can't believe the slumber party is slowly coming to an end 🥺🥺 I've been having such a blast connecting with so many kind and talented creators while getting back in the writing groove. I am already looking forward to the next slumber party 😊😊
For this challenge, I got goth farmer and immediately thought of Arvin Russel. It was easy since The Devil All the Time already has southern gothic themes.

Arvin x Reader One shot
Tumblr media
A/n: back again and most likely disappear had this in one of my drafts hehe hope you enjoy!! before you read there are mentions of a person unaliving themselves so slight trigger warning ‼️
You met Lenora at school sitting in the lunchroom all lonesome, you walked over to her and had stares like daggers when you made your way to her. She looked up and all she could do was stare at you and your bows in your hair with your nice smile as you placed your things on the table and sat across from her, “hi, im y/n, what's your name?” she asked as Lenora was in awe of your kindness, “im Lenora…you sure you wanna sit here?” she asked as you nodded, “yeah, is it okay if i sit here?” you asked as she smiled, “yes, it's very nice to have someone here,” she said as you two talked about anything. Lenora loved how she would spend time with you and she had even explained as to why she was all alone. Her family was such a talk around here, they had gone through so much. The time you had with her was nice. In the beginning you only saw her in the lunchroom, after school you never got sight of her. As time went on you found out why she sped on home, there was this group of boys who would tease her about herself and how her brother arvin had a special relationship according to them and no evidence at all of what was going on.
“They just got nothin better to do,” she explained and you fully believed in her word, “i believe you, those dumbasses probably have it worse that's why they say words that aren't true,” you said as she nodded as you and her walked out of school, “the good thing is they stopped, but it really scares me sometime,”
Out of nowhere this boy walked up to you two, “lenora i thought i told you to book it once the bell rings,” he spoke looking at you then her, “i know, but- oh god where are my manners, y/n this is arvin my brother and arvin this is probably my only friend in this whole school,” she said as you nodded, “hi, sorry for taking her away for a little, just wanted to make sure she was getting home fine,” you explained to arvin as he just couldn't keep his eye off you, “i-its okay sorry, its just i get real worried, it's nice to meet you y/n,” he said still stern as he was he walked back to his car as he looked over at you two talked, “well i'll see you later yeah?” lenora said, “yeah don't worry i'll probably see you at church at latest,” you suggested as she nodded having a better idea, “you know what, what if you come for dinner saturday, that way you can sleep over and we can go to church on sunday,” as you nodded, “Really? You sure?” you asked knowing her momma was strict about it. She was more sure than anything, her momma knew that she had no friends, but after hearing so much about you she was more than happy to have you over and spend time with them.
The time you had with the Russell family was like having another family. You only had your aunt who took you after your daddy died in the war. You didn't have a mother, she left you with your daddy after having you, so you had more in common with Lenora and her folks than people thought. This also gave you time with arvin on a personal level, he liked you since the minute he saw you, he felt what his daddy felt when he saw his momma.
“Now come on, lenora wont mind, if anything she will be happy we got together,” arvin said as you walked along the sidewalk reading your book, “oh arvin you are such a tease, you do realize when she sees us together she seeing those damn bells ringing,” you smirked as he smiled, “oh honey you ain't seen nothin yet, you will hear those bells ringing i will be marrying you,” which made you look up, “you are one crazy boy,” he said placing a kiss on your cheek, “only for you sweetheart,”
When Lenora killed herself, you found her in the closet looking for her, she wasn't feeling too good for church so you brought her medicine to feel all better, “now where could she be? Lenora! Girl, where are you-” you opened the door and saw her hanging by the rope, your heart was clenching and it only took you a moment to react, “Oh my…Arvin! Help! Please!” you repeated over and over, arvin ran as quick as he could and saw you screaming for his sister, took him a moment to react too and help you get her off the rope. All you remember was there was so much screaming. Lenora was the last person you would think to do this.
Which leads you to where you are now, you and arvin got married even after everything that happened to arvin you stuck with him. You two both had terrible lives, but now you were given the chance to live the way you deserved after everything. In a new town where no one knew yall. You bought a house together and worked jobs for the time being and just saw how life would treat you.
You weren't feeling too good lately so you called out of work for a couple days, “you sure you're feeling good? Why don't I take you to the doctor, even better call him here hon,” you nodded, “im okay it's probably the flu arv, just go to work, i'll call you if anything happens, yeah?” you assured him as he nodded, he kissed you goodbye and headed to work hoping you were okay. He hated when you got sick he worried so much it had reminded him of his momma and especially Lenora. He knew you were not capable of doing such, but being sick just reminded him of awful memories.
He hurried on home with some medicine and some soup hoping it made you feel better, he walked in and started calling your name, “y/n honey i got some soup and some stuff that will-” he was cut off seeing you laid out on the floor, he was quickly to panic trying to wake you up as you got out of the state you were in, “arvin, what happened,” you said looking around your surrounding seeing you had been on the ground, “you were just on the ground like you was dead, what- did someone do something? What happend?” he said, still quite panicked, " I was just getting water, that's it,” you said as he picked you up and he called the doctor.
The doctor ran all the tests insisted by arvin wanting to make sure everything was okay, once the doctor walked toward arvin he was quick to stand, the news he had just heard was far from his mind than anything he expected.
He walked back to your room as you sat in bed reading your book, once you saw Arvin you were quick to put it down, “so? What is it arvin? Do we have to start praying,” you stood up as he was quick to hold you sitting you down, “no honey, well maybe, it's all good were havin a baby,” he spat very happy, “you serious, oh my arvin, were havin a baby, oh arv,” you said tearing up, “hey hey, it's all good news, i married you for a reason, i ain't going nowhere, we are havin this baby,” he said as you looked over at him as you shook your head, “oh arv it's nothing like that, it's just…lenora, she would be here,” you said as he hugged you, “i know honey, but hey, if we have a girl we can name her lenora,” you nodded very happy, “we can oh god we can,” you both were over the moon and emotional all in the same boat not wanting this moment to be over. You worked so hard to be where you are, you were both thanking god, even arvin.

Your walking through the hallways after school to get to your locker, Arvin Russel normally picks you and his sister, Lenora up but running late because of work.
As you collect your books into your bag, it seems strange because usually Lenora comes running at you beaming with some particular interest of hers.
Maybe she had to go to the bathroom? Or left something in a classroom? That girl is awfully forgetful with her belongings you thought giggling.
Meanwhile, Lenora had some trouble on her hands as usual (a group of no good sons of Bitches as Arvin likes to call them) decided that it was a great idea to bully an innocent girl.
Lenora is sweet and kind, humble at what she has got. You don’t need no big, fancy things when you got a lot of love in the house. Unfortunately, people normally stay away from her because apparently rumour has it, she is a curse.
That is a far from the truth that is why, when you came to town you immediately, friends with the sweet girl! Thinking so much of her, being best friends is great. Especially when you help each other out and talk all day.
“Oh, look who it is boys,” Tommy Matson smirked, he stood from leaning to walking over to Lenora, “Hey, pretty girl,” he teased.
“Disgusting, don’t call me that from your vile mouth,” Lenora whispers the last part, too shy to stand up to her bullies.
“Walking away, are we?” Tommy whistles, “You know you would be pretty, if you weren’t such a freak!” He slams his hand against a garbage can, making Lenora scared she tryed to run off but it was no use.
“Get off me,” Lenora screeched, kicking her legs at the boy, “What is your momma going to say?”
Tommy, still holding her wrist, “hurts, let go!” Lenora whimpers at his strong grip.
“My momma ain’t gonna say shit, I don’t need to answer to you!” Tommy scowled, pulling her closer to his face to hush in her face, “hush now because Your a freak,”
“Properly made a pack with the devil,” Another boy joked, all his “friends” laughing along.
Just as things could be more abusive, you come rushing out the doors. You was looking around where Lenora could of been because your worried at how you haven’t seen her yet.
You gasped, as you open the large, brown doors to see stupid Tommy bullying her with other boys.
“Hey, get off her! You no good son of a bitch,” You storm your way over, Tommy didn’t even have a chance to speak before you grabbed his wrist from Lenora’s, “You don’t touch her, You should know better with that dumb brain of yours!”
“Y/N, another pretty girl! Why hang around with that freak if you can have all this,” Tommy explained trying to flirt, smirking.
you ignored him scoffing, kicking his knee. He dropped on the floor as he cried out.
“You slut, you will pay for this,” He shouted, pointing at you.
Paying your attention to the frighten Lenora, poor girl you step closer to her. “Come, let’s get out of here before they try something worse.” You whisper, as Tommy is dumbfounded by his so called “friends” laughing at him.
You and Lenora try to make a run for it without them noticing it but luck isn’t on your side today.
“You got your ass kicked by a girl,” Billy laughed, Chucky coming up behind him slapping Tommy’s back, “Yh, you definitely did! It was hilarious,”
“Hey, they’re trying to run away!” Billy told, “Well, what are you waiting for! Get them, you Idiots,” Tommy, grumbled out very loudly getting up as quick as he can.
“Lenora, it’s going to be ok! Let’s just keep running,” You tried to comfort her, she had a few tears in her eyes, until you feel a boy grab your wrist pushing you on the floor.
“Thinking you can get away from me, S/N,” Tommy tutted, Lenora wrists were grabbed by Billy and Chuck, “Yh we got you now!”
You quickly, stood up Tommy grabbed your waist squeezing it. Most likely leaving a mark of his attack, “Let go, or else!” You threatened hissing at him and the pain, looking pasted his head to see Lenora being pushed around by the other two boys.
You had to help Lenora so you had to be strong, plan this out carefully. “What is a weak girl like you? Going to do to me, HUH?” he chuckled, throwing you back to the floor. You hissed at your side, probably going to leave another bruise.
“A lot more than you think, you bitch!” You grunted, Tommy was going to make his way over to Lenora. You hopped on your feet again, running right into Him and pushing him really hard on the floor.
You grabbed Billy yanking him on the floor too, with a big crash sound of dirt. “Ow, you Bitch,”
Chuck being a pussy, running off in the other direction just before you had time to yank him on the floor. You may be in pain but you had to help Lenora out, first!
“Oh, My! Are you ok,” You help Lenora up, her knee was a bit bruised, “Yh, I’m fine thanks,”
“Oh, for fuck sake!” You see Tommy standing up, “Lenora you need to run, right now! I don’t care about me, I’ll handle him but RUN!” You look her in the eye, deadly serious.
Luckily, Billy is still on the ground yelping. Lenora nodded and ran, seeing Arvin’s car just about to pull up.
You quickly, grabbed Tommy’s fist that he was about to punch you with. You kick him in the stomach, taking off your bag and swinging it so that as it hits him he falls down, you fell down too hitting your knee.
“Son of a bitch,” you mumble.
seeing Tommy hovering over on the floor, you grab your bag and make a run for it with your bleeding knee. You couldn’t really see it because of your tights but you could definitely feel the blood trickling down.
Running for her dear life to her brother’s car, Arvin let out smoke from his mouth. Having Scolding hot, mean face on him as he sees Lenora running and You right behind her.
“Fuck,” Arvin let go as Lenora opened the back door, breathing heavily, “Are you ok, what happened!” He questioned just as you got in with her too.
“Never mind that just drive, Arvin,” You breathed out, looking at Tommy still on the floor but mostly going to move any moment.
Arvin actually listened Stepping on the Gas, “I bet it’s those no good sons of bitches isn’t it?” He scowled as he drags his cigarette out.
“Lenora,” You whisper, “it’s ok, they are gone!” You comforted her as she leans into you for a hug, “Yh, but we are fine! I hope,” you talking to Arvin pausing to think, “They we’re bullying Lenora. I stepped in to help her,”
“Yh, without Y/N I properly be beaten up,” Lenora whimpers out of fear, “Thank you,” she whispers, with tears in her eyes again giving you a small smile.
“It’s ok, no need to say thank you! Lenora, I’m your best friend, friends are there to protect friends!” You smile at her, she giggles, “Yh your the best!”
“Hush, I’m not that great! Your better,” You wink teasing her, lightening up the mood.
“Tch, those no good Hillbilly’s I’ll get the lot of them! They think it’s alright to bully people, especially women!” Arvin muttered, mostly to himself gripping the wheel tighter but you heard it giving him a sweet, toothy smile.
Arvin Russel the boy who was they call a devil, apparently cursed too! He acted tough but actually he had a sweet spot for you and his sister. That is all he ever want in life, to protect you and her.
“I appreciate you looking out for Lenora, Y/N,” Arvin actually gives you a smile, it was sweet never seen before to you until today. He admired you from a far, since the first time you protected his sister, he admires you more always.
“It was no, big deal Arvin,” You shyly said, putting your hair behind your ear, he nodded adjusting his cap.
“Why are you shy now! Mm,” Lenora shifted her shoulders towards you as she teases, “You had no trouble speaking clearly to those bullies, unless…”
You squinted your eyes at her, luckily Arvin isn’t taking any notice of her attics towards you.
“Lenora, no,” You hissed at her to cover up the pain you was in because you couldn’t say you were in pain.
“Well, I’m just telling! I can see it,” Lenora takes her hand, pointing to Arvin. You take her hand down and slapped your forehead, “Are you gonna stop, if I admit it?” You questioned, giggling.
Your side really hurts but you can’t let them know because that’s embarrassing. The bully threw you a bit too hard on the floor as you hoped.
“Maybe,” Lenora smirked, waving as she wiggles her fingers, “Oh, my right well change of subject! Are you hurt anywhere?”
Arvin pulled up at their drive way, going take you home after dropping off Lenora is the usual plan after school.
“My side hurts a bit,” You nodded, “Oh, I remember I packed cool patches,” you give a couple of Lenora, “Here, for your side,” You smile.
“Thanks, wouldn’t know what I do without you,” Lenora smiled back, “Are you hurt too?” She worried about you too? You thought, how sweet! “No, no, it’s fine I’m not,” You smile hiding the pain, you could just clean yourself up after you get home anyway.
“I’m honestly ok, now you rested up poppet over the weekend,” You lie as you smile, hugging her a good bye as she waved getting out the car, “bye,” Lenora waved at Arvin too, one last time going into her house.
It’s easier if people don’t know your in the pain, you had to learn that the hard way in the past few years of living in the other town.
You breathed out slowly as you feel slightly dizzy, nothing much out of the ordinary you suppose.
You wonder why Arvin hasn’t started the car back up as you open your eyes you see Arvin right next to you on the back seat.
He is looking at you, there is something in his eyes.. worry? Maybe, I doubt it you thought.
“Hey, Are you ok? Darlin’,” Arvin softly asked, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you love,”
How did you not hear the door going? On the car as he left the front to the back. You must of been so hazy, only focusing on Arvin now.
You take a deep breath “I’m ok,” you shakily whispered, gulping as your heart beat going faster of how Arvin is so close to you.
Your lips could actually meet!
“No, please don’t lie, sweetheart,” Arvin shook is head, taking your soft hand into his slightly rough yet soft one making your breath hitch at the sudden contact, “A pretty girl like you shouldn’t have to hide their true feelings and I can tell you got hurt, Darlin’,”
You sigh looking up into Arvin’s chocolate, warm brown eyes they were normally, cold full of dark tones of brown.
“Your eyes are gorgeous,” You stutter, blinking tilting your head.
“Not as gorgeous as yours, Pretty girl!” He winks, Pretty girl came much better from his perfect, soft lips.
“May I,” Arvin asked suggesting to touch you, “yes,” you nodded, almost forgetting the pain.
Arvin brushes your hair behind your ear, cupping your jaw gently into his hand as he brings your face closer to his.
“You need help, I’m going to help you! Not only you protected my sister, your strong and beautiful girl, who I want to get to know because I already…” He cuts himself off, looking the other way as he ruffles his hair stilling holding your jaw gently.
You reached out your hand cupping his jaw gentle, making him look into you this time. Bringing him closer, you heard his breath hitch just like yours a moment ago.
“Arvin, you already what?” You whisper, giving a curious look to him, you lick your lips, “Fine, I will let you help me but what is it your going to say?” You gave him a real, genuine smile this time.
“I, I love you, Y/N,” Arvin smiled, “Please let me help you,” You can’t believe what your hearing, the boy that you been crushing on since you moved in town just confessed his feelings.
You are quite starstruck completely forgetting about your bruise sides or your bleeding knee. Never the less, you pull him into a sweet kiss to answer his question.
“I love you too, Arvin,” You look into his eyes again, smiling. He kisses you with his soft, delicious lips again drifting off into the clouds.
“I think we should go into the house and clean you up, Darlin’,” He whispers through kisses, you nod.
Arvin gets out of his car, opening your door and carefully standing you up. You wince at your side because of the bruises, they are quite fresh.
“It’s ok, love,” Arvin, steadies you as you stumble upon on your feet as you walk, “I got you, I got you,”
“Do you want me to lift you up? Sweetheart,” Arvin suggests, you shook your head, “I’m too heavy,” you mumble,
“No, your not love! Who put that stupid, crap into your head,” Arvin scoffed, “You are perfect, now please let me pick you up because you can hardly walk,”
You nod agreeing, Arvin wraps his arms around your waist to lift you up as you put your legs around him too.
“See not heavy,” He smiles, kissing your forehead.
You bury your head into the crook of his neck, smelling his delicious scent. Even if he has a hint of smokes on him, he still smells like vanilla and pine wood.
Luckily, Lenora is in her room and Arvin’s grandmother is in the kitchen too busy repairing dinner to hear the door going.
Arvin went upstairs with you, very quietly to make sure no one notice to keep things at least now private between you. He pop you down on his bed, “This is more comfortable than my bed,” you giggle, Arvin put your bag down near his draws.
“Oh is it?” Arvin nodded, “Im going to get the band aid kit for you love,” you nodded as he went. You sink down more into his bed, loving how soft it is, still your knee is bleeding but at least your getting a handsome guy to fix it.
Those pet names that Arvin gives you sends butterflies right down your stomach! Making you day dream to the clouds again, you look around his room. It’s actually pretty cosy, nice room to be in.
“Can you sit up, Darlin?” Arvin asked, closing the door, you nodded propping yourself up. You realised that you had tights on, “Can I take them off? To get to your knee, I can see it’s been bleeding under the material,” you loved how he explained himself, acting tough but in reality being shy around you.
“Yes, Arvin!” You smiled as he slides them off showing your bare legs, “This may sting love, you can squeeze my hand if it gets too much,” you take his other hand.
Your shirt rises a little bit, Just enough for Arvin to see your side bruises.
“Those god Damn Hillbilly’s are gonna be 12ft underground,” Arvin mumbles under his breath as he goes through the first aid box.
“Ouch,” you hiss, “Your doing so well, Darling” Arvin praised as he wipes your Graze with the aesthetic wipe.
Arvin places a plaster on your knee after he kisses it, “Do you feel better?” He asked, “Wait, you need a cooler pack for your bruises,” he remembered going back through the first aid box.
“Your too sweet,” You gasped at the coldness, “It’s cold,” You giggle, holding Arvin’s hand a bit tighter.
“Only sweet for you sweetheart,” Arvin winked at you, “I have something to ask you,”
“ok, shoot,” You smile, rubbing his hand looking into his eyes.
“Will you officially be my girl,” Arvin scratches the back of his neck, shyly as he asked you.
“Of course Arvin,” Arvin pulled you into a passionate kiss before you could say anything else, “Like sugar aren’t you!” You Smiled.
Arvin licks his lips, “Mm, not as much as you, Doll,” he stands up laying down on the bed with you.
“Thank you for cleaning me up,” You snuggle into him more as he wraps his arms around you, “Anytime, My love,” Arvin kisses your cheek, stroking your head.
“Sleep beautiful,” You hear him whisper into your ear as you drift off, too tired to keep your eyes open any longer.
Arvin pulls the covers over you, kissing you on the forehead just before he drifts off with you.

Cause You Had A Bad Day
Pairing: Arvin Russell x Reader
Synopsis: Arvin snaps at you after a bad day for the both of you
Masterlist
Tumblr media
Arvin came home after a rough day and just wanted to be alone. Nothing particularly horrible happened, just a bunch of little annoyances that left him irritable and tired. He hung up his jacket with a heavy sigh and went to the kitchen to get some water. You had been looking at a slip of paper with a deep frown but folded it up and set it down when you saw Arvin come in.
“Hi, honey. How was your day?” You asked as you put on a smile for him.
“Not great.” He mumbled as he took a seat at the kitchen table and poured himself some water. You immediately went over to him and put your hands on his shoulders.
“Oh, I’m sorry. What happened?” You asked as you rubbed small circles on his back.
“Don’t wanna talk about it.” Arvin mumbled and pulled away from your touch. He was feeling overstimulated already and didn’t want to be touched at the moment, but you didn’t realize that yet.
“Was it because of the heat? I was thinking bout you all day. You must’ve been sweating like a pig out there at the tar pits. Bet it was real hot, huh?”
“No. Wasn’t the heat. Just had a bad day, is all.” Arvin said and gave you a tired look. He hoped you’d see how exhausted he was and just leave him alone.
“Oh.” You nodded in understanding. “It was that one worker, wasn’t it? What was his name again? Sal? No. Was is James? Or is his name Joe? I can’t remember. But you said something bout him once after he-“
“Wasn’t a worker either. Just had a bad day, okay?” Arvin repeated, starting to get frustrated with you. For some reason, your simple questions were making his blood boil under his skin.
“I’m sorry you had a bad day, honey. Would it make you feel better if I fixed you something to eat?” You asked and tried to rub his back again. Arvin clenched his hands into fists and took a deep breath before letting them go.
“I’m not hungry. Don’t worry bout me. I just wanna be alone right now.” He told you and started to walk towards your shared bedroom.
“What about a bath? I bet that would make you feel better. Don’t you want to sit down in a nice, hot bath? I’ll draw one for you. I could even join you.” You offered as you followed him to the room. He was so annoyed from his day at work that he wasn’t even listened to what you were saying, he only knew that you were talking when he wanted silence.
“No, that’s okay. I’ll probably just take a nap or something.” He gave you a tight smile and took a seat on your bed.
“Okay. Good idea. Get some rest, honey. I’ll get started on dinner.” You told him. You took his hat off his head and kissed his forehead before leaving the room. Arvin sighed in a relief and laid down, finally getting the silence he wanted. The silence lasted about three minutes before you knocked on the doorframe.
“Hey Arvin?” You asked, making Arvins eyes fly open and remain on the ceiling.
“Do you want chicken tonight or stew? Cause I was thinking I could use the leftover chicken stock from yesterday to make a-“
“God damn it!” He cut you off and sat up in bed as he loudly slammed his fist down on the dresser beside him. You jumped a little and looked at him in confusion.
“Can you shut the fuck up for two seconds? I cannot stand the sound of your voice right now. How many god damn questions are you gonna ask me? I don’t care if you do chicken or stew or if you were hot today and I definitely don’t care about baths. I asked you to leave me alone. Why can’t you just to that? Just leave me the fuck alone!”
A silence fell between the two of you as you stared at each other across the bed room. You blinked a few times and Arvin saw your eyes well with tears before you looked down at the ground. He immediately felt guilty for yelling at you and wanted to apologize, but you started speaking first.
“Okay.” You said after a minute as you kept your eyes on your fingers while you nervously toyed with them.
“Okay?” Arvin asked in confusion. He didn’t expect such a short response after screaming so loud at you that the house shook.
“Okay, I’ll leave you alone.” You said quietly.
“Oh. All right. Thank you.” Arvin eyed you curiously, wondering why you weren’t shouting back.
“Um, I’ll just make dinner then. Sorry.” You said and quickly left the room.
Arvin tried to lay back down again but couldn’t stop thinking about what he had said. He was known to lose his temper, he had just never lost it at you like that. You’d been there to patch him up every time he let his anger get the better of him but this time, you had been the one on the receiving end. Arvin twiddled his thumb for a minute before laying down again. He tossed and turned it a few minutes before getting out of bed. He padded into the kitchen and saw you chopping vegetables on the counter.
“Baby doll?” He asked as he knocked on the doorframe to alert you to his presence. He saw you stiffen at the sound of his voice but you didn’t stop chopping up vegetables.
“What?” You asked without turning around. Arvin gulped a little, hearing that you write upset from the tone of your voice. He walked over to you and wrapped his arms around you from behind as he rested his chin on your shoulder.
“I’m sorry I shouted at you.” Arvin mumbled against the skin of your neck before placing a kiss there. You didn’t respond that time and continued with that you were doing. Arvin frowned and tried again.
“I wasn’t mad at you, darling. I was mad about everything else. I had a bad day-“
“I know.” You cut him off before moving out of his arms and going over to the sink. He watched as you filled a pot with water before slamming it down on the stove.
“I had a bad day and I snapped at you. I’m sorry.” He finished his sentence and hoped you would hear the sincerity in his voice. You stopped what you were doing suddenly and turned around the look at him.
“You know, I had a bad day too.” You told him as you folded your arms.
“What happened?” Arvin asked as his eyebrows knit together. You rolled your eyes a little before looking back down at the ground.
“Well, I went into work and found at that my boss’s son got the promotion that I’ve been working towards for months. But that’s fine. I almost expected that more them I expected the promotion. To make myself feel better, I stopped at the market on my way home. I thought I might bake something to surprise you. I accidentally bumped into this man with my cart and he screamed in my face. I got scared so I just left my cart there and walked back to my car. He followed me to scream at me some more. I just wanted to get home after that but I guess I was in too much of a hurry because Officer Bodecker pulled me over and gave me a ticket. Not before me mumbled something about how women shouldn’t be allowed on the road, of course. Then I came home. And I was so excited to to see you to tell you about my awful day. Because after everything that happened, I truly didn’t think my day could get any worse.” You said as you looked up at Arvin. He was looking at you with pity in his eyes, his guilt only doubling now that he knew the full story. You looked him up and down before shaking your head a little.
“And then my boyfriend yelled at me.” You said with a sad smile. Arvin shut his eyes and leg out a little sigh before going over to you. He put his hand on your shoulder but you didn’t look into his eyes.
“Baby doll, I am so sorry. I had no idea what kinda day you had.” He said in a soft voice.
“Would that have changed anything? Would you really have been able to control your temper?” You asked as you looked up at him. Arvin opened his mouth to respond, then shut it when he realized he didn’t have an answer. He wanted to think the answer was yes, but he couldn’t confidently tell you that. You noticed Arvins lost expression and sighed a little.
“Arvin, I know you’re tired. But I’m tired too. I’m tired of men getting to act however they want, and expect us not to react. I’ve been screamed at, purposely scared, and put down so many times just because a man near me had a bad day. Well I wanna scream too. I have bad days too.”
“I know you do, baby doll.” Arvin said and cupped your face. This time, you let him and rested your cheek in his hand.
“I’m sorry I shouted at you. I’m sorry I made your day worse. I wish I wasn’t so angry all the time. I don’t know why I’m like that. I wish I were different.”
The sadness in Arvins eyes, coupled with the genuine remorse in his voice, made you give him a sad smile. You thought about the childhood he had endured and all the reasons he had to be a perpetually angry person. You reached up and cupped Arvins face, taking him by surprise.
“I don’t wish you were different. I love you the way you are.” You told him, making his eyes soften. He wrapped his hand around your wrist and leaned into your palm.
“Please, let me make it up to you. How can I make your day better?” Arvin asked you. You thought about it for a second before a coy smile tugged at your lips.
“I can still draw that bath.”
“No, please, I don’t deserve it. You don’t have to do anything for me.” Arvin shook his head.
“I didn’t say it was just for you.” You told him as you pulled him by the shirt towards the bathroom.
A few minutes, you were sitting between Arvins legs in a warm bath with candles lit around you. Arvin scooped up some of the bubbles you had put into the tub and used them to give himself a bubble heard. You looked over your shoulder at him and laughed at what he had done.
“Do you feel better?” He asked now that he had you smiling again.
“‘Much.” You sighed happily and sunk deeper into the bath.
“I tell ya, that officer Bodecker don’t know what he’s talking about. I’m gonna go down to that station tomorrow and get that ticket cleared up.” Arvin declared.
“Aw, Arvie warvy.” You gushed. “Thanks, honey. I would appreciate that.”
“Yup. And after that, I’m gonna go to the market and get you all your favorite baking goods. You can make all the cookies and pies that can fit in our house.”
“That would be something, wouldn’t it? A whole house full of baked goods. Bet it would smell mighty fine in here.” You said as you looked over your shoulder with a smile.
“It would. And while you bake, I’m gonna make you the best damn dinner you ever did have. You won’t have to lift a finger.”
“Can you even cook, mister?” You raised an eyebrow at him.
“I’m gonna learn. I’ll hit the books right after this bath.” Arvin stated, malign you laugh again. He smiled and felt relieved to know you had forgiven him.
“What’s the rush? We can stay here all night if we want.”
“Suppose we could. But we’d get all pruny.” Arvin reminded you.
“I like prunes.” You shrugged and snuggled closer to his body. Arvin happily wrapped his arms around you and rested his chin on your head.
“You know what?” Arvin smiled. “So do I.”

School had been like any other regular day. You’d wait for the bell to dismiss all of you. Then you would start making your way towards your locker to put up or get the books you’d need to use for homework. By then you’d turn around and be welcomed by the gorgeous face that was your boyfriends. However this time when you turned around you were faced with the emptiness of the hallways. Everyone had gone home by now.
You never thought much of it since Arvin was always on time, but this time you couldn’t help but feel uneasy. Your gut was screaming at you to start walking. Not exactly towards home just towards the exit. Once you pushed open the double doors you stood still. Taking in the air. Breathing it in…making yourself aware of the noises. What you were hearing specifically. Your head turned towards the corner of the building, then after another yell was heard you dropped your bag and took off towards the sound.
When you finally rounded the corner you were met with a sight you never wanted to witness again. Being held down by a bunch of jocks was Arvin. His arms were being held back so he couldn’t defend himself. You knew he could, but even then he couldn’t do anything as they were hitting him.
“Hey!” You yelled as you ran towards them. “Get off of him!” You shoved the one that was about to land another blow to his face, and made him hit the pavement. “Arvin!”
“Y/n, stay out of this!” Arvin groaned.
“I’d listen to him baby doll!” One of them warned you.
“And if I don’t? You gonna hit a girl Travis?” You raised an eyebrow at him. “Or would you rather I tell your daddy you’ve been stashing your weed behind the school’s garbage cans.” Travis grew quiet. “Oh, no then? That’s what I thought. Get lost Travis!”
“Let’s ditch this lot boys. I’ve had nuff of this broad and this idiot.” He ran his hand under his nose and snuffed. His boys shoved Arvin to the ground as they left. You ran by his side and helped him up.
“You’re done for, Travis!” Arvin tried throwing himself at him but you held him back. “Done for!”
“Hey! He’s not worth it, Arvin.” You pleaded as you pressed your hand into his shoulder blade. “Hey look at me. He’s not worth it.”
“The next time I see em-”
You stopped him short and pressed your lips against his. He tensed up and then relaxed as he melted against your lips.
“Not worth it, okay.”
“Not worth it.” He hummed as he pulled you closer by the waist.

winter blurbs 2.0 ❄️ | 2.0 masterlist ❄️
Tumblr media
it had been snowing constantly since last night and you were bored out of your mind flipping through channels until the dish went out. arvin, your husband, still wasn’t home from work but an idea sprung to your mind.
you pulled out your winter gear and boots and went to the grocery store just down the hill. it was the one closest to your home. you were a usual customer there so the lady at the cashier gave you a smile and helped you pick out the stuff you needed.
you brought everything you needed back home and found the door slightly opened indicating that arvin was back.
“arvy! i’m home!” you called out to him, closing the door behind you.
“hey, darlin’!” the brunette walked out of your bedroom, “where’d you go?”
“just got some stuff from the grocery.” you said, making your way towards the kitchen and arvin following you in search of hugs and kisses he didn’t receive.
two arms wrapped around your waist from behind as you srart to empty the contents of your bag onto the counter. arvin pressed little pecks over your shoulder and neck. you smiled at his loving nature, turning around to give him a kiss.
“here’s my idea.” you mumbled against his lips, “let’s bake some christmas cookies.”
“i’ve a better idea.” he said, pressing his lips against yours once again. he bit your bottom lip gently before moving back, giving you space to breathe, “i ain’t know nothing about baking, sweetie.”
“come on, i wanna bake some cookies.” you insisted, giving him your best pleading eyes.
arvin eyed the ingredients occupying the counter, “i think that’s enough stuff for the whole county.”
you both chuckled but arvin knew he’d have to go through with your plan because who was he to deny your proposal. lord, he would have jumped down an active volcano if you asked him to.
“okay, so we’ll start with the classic chocolate chip cookies.” you said as you poured the ingredients for the dough into a bowl. arvin helped you in adding the chocolate chips and kneading until it was firm enough to start making little balls of dough.
once they were into the oven, you instantly moved on to making a new batch, clapping your hands together, “now chocolate crinkle cookies!”
“someone’s excited.” arvin chuckled.
“i sure am!” you chirped.
the two of you spent the evening making several batches of cookies and by the time you were done, you probably did have enough cookies for the county.
“told you.” arvin said, making both of you laugh.
you both tried one from each batch, “i think the meringue kisses are the best. what d’you think?”
arvin seemed to think for a moment before he replied, “let me give a chance to change your opinion.”
“you can’t change my-”
you couldn’t complete your sentence because arvin had pulled you on his lap, wrapping an arm around your waist and kissing you. his tongue swiped against your lip, sliding into your mouth subtly.
“alright, opinion changed. your kisses are the best.”

Yandere Arvin Russell (3/5)
Tumblr media
Word count ; 3.8k
*Edited
I strolled out of the school doors, a noticeable pep in my step. Arvin and I had gotten into a habit of joining Lenora down at the cemetery. During the lovely - but terribly awkward - family dinner I had gotten to know her better. She was a sweet girl.
And Arvin and I, we took the chance to see each other whenever possible. A month or so had passed since our first meeting, and we were still going steady. My heart still fluttered when he held my hand, and he was still mystified with everything going out of my mouth.
It was easy to be in love with a man like him.
I was so caught up in my daydreams, that while wrapping around the side of the school building to dispose of some of my school trash, I failed to notice the group of boys trailing after me.
I tossed the plastic bag of scraps and leftover food before wiping my hands on my pants. I hummed a happy little tune to myself before turning around, ready to head back.
But instead, anxiety washed over me instantly when I realized three lanky and robust boys had surrounded me only a few feet away. I took a step back, pressing myself against the side of the dumpster.
“Well, hello, boys,” I greeted, giggling nervously as my nails dug into the green plastic. “What can I do for you’s?”
“There’s a lot you can do for us,” the main bully, who was hovering but a foot in front of me, chuckled. “I’m feeling nice, so how about you give me a kiss?”
I heard his counterparts laugh impishly. Fear consumed me, and when he took a step closer, I pushed at his chest. However, he grabbed my wrists and pulled me forward. I lost my footing, my face colliding with his chest.
“Or, if you insist, we can take things further, whore.”
I let out a shriek of fear, trying to beat him. But just as I struggled free, the other two bullies grabbed two of my arms and pulled them out, leaving me to struggle in between them. “Please,” I begged. “I don’t know what you’re thinkin’, trying to violate me like this, but I swear I ain’t done nothing wrong to you’s.”
“Oh, but you did,” the bully in front of me hummed, grabbing my jaw hardly and making me face him, even though I kicked and squirmed. “On the contrary, whore,” he hissed. “You go prancing around like ya own the place. You refuse to go loving us poor boys that deserve a little touchin’. And that’s cute for a while, whore, but we’re getting tired.”
“Not to fuckin’ mention,” the one to my right interrupted, "you finally stop being such a prude and you go sucking that Russell boy’s dick when you owe us some of that pretty little mouth of yours.”
“ We - we ain’t done nothing but kissin’,” I insisted. “Don’t do anything, please. All I ask is that ya spare me. I ain’t doing nothin’ wrong, boys.”
The one in front of me didn’t look pleased. His grip became frighteningly strong, and I could’ve sworn I heard my jaw cracking. I let out another gasp of pain. He suddenly looked bored. He yanked me forward and tried kissing up on me. I wasn’t able to avoid it, but I kicked him in the groin suddenly.
I yanked my arms free, having caught all three of them off guard. I pushed past them and tried to make a run for it, but a hand grabbed my shoulder and pulled me back. I was about to scream, but a hand flew to my mouth, muffling my cries. The other two bullies, taking advantage of my cloddish movement, began tugging at my pants.
Tears stung the edges of my eyes as I flailed in the bully’s arm. My pants were pulled down, the clod wind hitting my bare legs. I knew I was burning red from shame as they greedily pawed at my legs.
“Let’s fuckin’ hurry this up,” the bully which was holding me gruffly demanded. “I’m too fuckin’ horny to be wastin’ more time.”
His minions chuckled cruelly. Fear coursed through my veins as one of their fingers looped into the side of my panties, about to pull down and reveal myself completely. I was trembling to the core, trying to wrangle myself free and escape, but I knew I was outnumbered.
The bully began to pull down —
A fist suddenly collided with his face. I shrieked as I tumbled on top of him, but I was quick to roll off and reach for my pants. The other two bullies shouted, turning their attention to my savior, embarrassment betraying their expressions.
I watched as someone - which I quickly identified as my Arvin - darted past me and tried punching another one of them, but the two overpowered him. The leader also scrambled to his feet and jerked him back by his collar, throwing him against the dumpster.
A screech escapade my lungs as I pulled up my pants, my attention on my poor Arvin, who was getting the shit kicked out of him. I dashed over, trying to pull one of the three’s shoulders, but they pushed me away. Once again I was sent sprawling on the ground, my hands chaffing against the pavement.
“Please, stop!” I screamed, watching as they kicked him to the ground.
Arvin’s face was a bloody mess as he rolled on the ground. The leader and his compadres laughed, finally stepping away. I trembled on the ground as they turned toward me. I shut my eyes, fearing for the worst.
But they walked right past me, only shooting a few final slurs my way.
I peered over my shoulder, seeing they had abandoned the scene. I crawled over to Arvin, who was still groaning and clutching his stomach. Blood slid down his nose and already there was a bruise developing around his eye.
I tired off a piece of my shirt and applied it to his nose. I cradled his head in my lap. “Blow,” I instructed shakily.
He coughed and did so, the rest of the blood spewing from his nose. I finished wiping it off and discarded it in the wind. Arvin coughed one more time, finally propping himself up on his elbows. There was a dominating fury in his eyes, even now, and I could tell he still wanted a piece of those bastards.
He finally sat up, to which I rose to my feet and offered a hand to pull him up, he took it, grunting as he finally stood. One arm was still hugging his waist and he ws hunched over in pain. I cupped his cheeks and placed a distressed kiss on his nose.
He chuckled dryly, pushing me away. His arm finally detached, and instead he cupped my cheeks. He wiped away my tears, to which I snorted up the snot back into my nose. Distress still consumed my every being.
“They’re not goin’ to stop,” I stated.
He sent me an impish, knowing grin. “Oh, they will,” he insisted. “My daddy taught me that it’s all about pickin’ the right time. And that wasn’t the right time. But no way in hell could I let them be touchin’ up on my woman.”
A small smile Ade its way to my face. I kissed the tip of his nose. “…I need to bandage you up. Your everything must be hurtin’ like hell.”
“Yeah, but Lenora’s waiting for us in the car and I have some shit I got ta do while you two are there,” he sighed.
My eyes widened. “But you never leave Lenora to herself.”
“I won’t be leaving her to herself. I’ll be leaving her with you.”
I nodded in agreement. I then slung a gentle arm around his waist and we started walking. Arvin had a slight limp, but I knew that was the least of his worries. We fell silent on the walk back to the car.
~~~
“What do ya mean you have somethin’ to do?” Lenora prodded with scrunched brows and a confused expression.
As the trheee of us stood outside the car, Lenora had taken her bible. She was about to visit her mother’s grave and I… well, I was hoping to meet with the priest. I’d been visiting behind Arvin’s back because the one time I mentioned it he was very against it. And I didn’t want to make him mad, even if I knew he had my best interest at heart, but I also longed to fix myself and only the priest could help me find God again.
“I meant what I said,” Arvin spoke tensely. “It’s something I can’t put off. You’ll be fine on your own, right? It’s just for one afternoon.”
Lenora bit her lip. I leaned against Arvin, one of his hands wrapped around my waist on instinct. We watched her intently, although for different reasons. “…I guess so. You’ve just… never done something like that before. Nothing’s wrong, right, brother?”
Arvin grinned reassuringly. “Nothin’ at all, Lenora. I just have some work I got ta get done, is all. I’ll be back to pick you two up later, don’t you worry.”
I giggled, pressing a loving kiss to his cheek. Lenora’s shoulders slumped as she caved. “…Right. That’s okay, Arvin. You go on and do what you have to do. I’m going to go talk to my mother now.”
Arvin detached from my side and wound around to the driver’s seat. I wanted to watch him go, but Lenora sped off toward her mother’s grave. I sent one last wave to the car before trailing after her. She didn’t seem upset. But with Lenora, I could never tell because of how much of a sweetheart she was.
I hovered behind her as she kneeled on the ground. She began skimming through her bible, finding where she left off. Mustering my courage, I tapped her shoulder. “Lenora?”
With doe eyes, she peered up at me. “Yes, Y/n?”
“I hate to be like Arvin, but I have something to do, too. I want to go see the priest.”
Instead of disappointment, her eyes sparkled and she clasped. Her hands together excitedly. “Really? Are you starting to go down the path of righteousness?”
I nodded. “I’m tryin’ like hell. I guess it’s alright with you, but… don’t tell Arvin. I know he doesn’t like the new priest at all.”
Lenora’s mouth twitched before fully forming into a frown. “…But lying is a sin, Y/n.”
“It’s not lying if I don’t tell him. Besides, I’ll let him know eventually. But I just need to be the one to let him know, not anyone else. So, on that note - it’s alright if I leave you here for a bit, right?”
Lenora nodded eagerly. “You’re right. Yes, go serve the Lord, Y/n. I’m proud of you.”
Courage fluttered in my chest and I nodded. I turned tail and began strolling toward the church. Even though I was trying to worship God and be more faithful, I knew that even I had a hard time understand why the priest was sitting in the church every day of the week, just waiting for people to stroll in. But I knew that was something to take advantage of.
I gently pushed the wooden door open. It squeaked, alerting the man in the pews of my entrance. When the young man spotted me, a boyish grin snuck up to his face.
“Y/n. I’m glad that you’ve decided to join me for a chat,” he greeted smoothly, sliding down the pew and motioning for me to join him.
I was surprised by his friendliness, and a smile graced my lips. I walked down the aisle until I was able to slide into the seat, my discomfort washing off me as my soul was flooded with the spirit. The priest reciprocated my joy, a handsome smile stretching across his features.
“What brings ya here on this fine Thursday? I sense something is wracking your soul,” he inquired.
I pursed my lips. “…Yes. I guess so. Today at school, these three boys tried to force lovin’ on me and I was so scared. My man, Arvin Russell, came and saves me, but the bullies hurt us both a lot. I’m still recoverin’.”
He pursed his lips, brows furrowing. He seemed caught off guard by that confession. “…That… that’s not your fault. The devil was in ‘em boys,” he conceded. “But you got ta clean your soul now. Only God’s touch can fix you of your filth.” He placed his hand on my leg, giving it a squeeze.
“But… why would I be dirty if I wasn’t at fault, sir?” I croaked, betrayal coursing through my veins.
“Because the devil used ‘em boys to sully your spirit. The devil has touched you, and only a man of god can cleanse your soul now.”
“But… I don’t mean to argue with you, sir, but why can’t I cleanse the devil myself?”
“As strong as God is with you, everyone needs help time to time,” he explained, his fingers ghosting further up my leg. “And now is when you need the help of God. Now, God can’t touch you. But a priest can, and a priest like me can cleanse you of the devil’s touch.”
“R - really?”
“Yes. But… it cannot be now.”
“Why not?”
“For the sake of pr - the spirit, it is best to be with God. And to be even closer to God than in his own house, is to be amongst his gift of nature.”
“I… guess that makes sense,” I meekly agreed. “But… I have my lover boy waiting for me so he can pick me and Lenora up.”
“Yes. And we will need much more time than this fleeting moment.” His  hand withdrew from my leg, and he clasped his hands together. With a charming yet soulful smirk, he continued, "Perhaps this weekend I can pick you up and we can go down into the woods. We can pray together and banish the devil from your soul together.”
I clasped my hands together and my eyes widened. “Oh, thank you, sir. Nothing would make me happier than to banish the devil from me. Thank you for this opportunity.”
He chuckled brazenly. “Don’t thank me, my child. Thank the Lord, for he is blessing you with someone to guide you to righteousness.”
I nodded in agreement, abruptly standing. “Thank you, Lord. I must be going now. Arvin will be back any minute.”
He gave a small wave, not saying anything else. Instead, he picked up the Bible sitting next to me and began flipping through the pages. I walked out, not looking back. But my spirit was uplifted and I felt better. A part of me wanted to tell Arvin as soon as I could so that I could show him God’s love, too.
Lenora waited. And waited. At some point, it started to rain, so I showed her how to glue leaves together to make an umbrella, which she exclaimed was a great bonding activity. Despite Arvin’s disappearance - and possibly getting sick - it was a nice afternoon.
Eventually, though, he showed up, profusely apologizing. But we thought it was fine.
~~~
I tugged the boy up into the bulky branch, laughing when a branch plopped on his head when he pulled himself up. Arvin confessed prior to the activity that he had a fear of heights, so I made sure we didn’t climb too high off the ground. Just enough to feel the thrilling sensation of wind beating against you and having nothing under one’s feet, like a baby in a highchair.
Arvin panted slightly and readjusted his weight on the thick, bulky branch. He finally felt comfortable enough to intertwine our fingers. He let out a shaky breath before leaning his head on my shoulder.
My composure was casual; I was used to sitting on trees. Sometimes, I found one comfortable enough to catch a quick nap in. I giggled, reaching to his cheek and stroking it.
“Are ya finally going ta tell me why ya can’t take me on a date tomorrow afternoon?” he prodded, quirking his brow. His grip on my hand tightened, but not painfully so.
I sighed, leaning against his head. “Well, you’re not going to like it. I put it off until now.”
“…Yes, darlin’?”
“Believe it or not, the young new priest isn’t half bad. I swear it, Arvin. He’s been helping me find God and I’ve never felt better about the Lord. I told him about the problem with them boys the other day, and he told me the devil had touched me when those boys did. And he said he could help me pray an cleanse my soul with God’s touch out in the wilderness.”
Arvin pulled away form me, staring with bewilderment. “That’s bull shit! The devil ain’t touched any pat of ya, Y/n. The guy just gets a kick out of making people feel bad.”
I sent him a reassuring smile, cupping his cheeks as I swung my legs. “Trust me, lover boy. I asked the same thing, and he said the devil was in them boys. That I ain’t done nothing wrong, but it was good to cleanse the devil’s touch.”
His face scrunched up, including the purplish bruise around his left eye. A stubborn scowl appeared on his handsome face. However, I silenced what I knew would come next with a kiss.
I felt him cave, but only for a moment. He then gently pushed me away by the shoulders, his glower weakening. “I trust you,” he insisted. “I just don’t like that new priest. He insulted my grandma’s cookin’ when he first showed up. Made a whole scene about her chicken liver dish and ate it all himself in the name of God.”
I laughed. “Maybe that’s a little rude, Arvin,” I admitted. “But he’s a nice man. When my mother made me talk to him, he was so very kind.” My expression faltered for a moment, and I cleared my throat. “…Well, he sympathized with me about my life and told me nature was God’s gift. That God loved me and my mother was wrong.”
He furrowed his brows and his jaw tensed. “You and your ma don’t get along too good, do ya?”
“She makes it rather obvious,” I chuckled dryly. “She hates me more and more every day. I don’t really know why, but I don’t care either.I think she’s pretty darn glad I’m with ya. She hopes I get married and leave the house as soon as possible. Or, to quote her, ‘the devil will give you your match’.”
Arvin sighed, pressing his forehead against mine. “I’m sorry. I guess… I should’ve connected the dots a lot sooner, huh?”
“It’s fine, Arvin. When I’m with you, I ain’t got any other worries in the world. You know…” A tsunami of mourning crashed into me, and my voice felt strained. “I see myself growing old with ya. Wish I met you earlier. Maybe then you could’ve met my brother. He was… like you. You two would’ve gotten along well.”
“Why can’t I meet him now? Is ‘e moved out?”
“No. He was in prison and then he killed himself. Couldn’t take not having his wife. The county priest, when he moved out with his wife, raped ‘er. She killed herself from shame. And so, he killed her.” Arvin fell silent, and I didn’t even feel his breath fanning across my face. “I agree with what he did, though. My mother said the devil was in the two of ‘em. I never told her that he died, though. I hope she dies alone, wondering why she let her only son and daughter leave her.”
One of his hands gripped my waist and the other skimmed over my upper thigh. “I’m sorry. If anythin’, the devil’s in your ma.”
I sighed. “Well, enough about me, lover boy. Why ain’t you a God-worshipper anymore? I’ve heard rumors of your past, but I tend not to listen to sthem absurd people.”
“My ma caught somethin’ called cancer and she died. My dad killed himself after the funeral. I found the body. The Sheriff drove me here. Lived ‘ere ever since.”
“Have you… forgiven your pa?” I suddenly asked, grasping at his upper arm.
He frowned. “Lenora asked me the same thing the other day.” He thought for a moment. “What is there to forgive? He’s dead.”
“I… know how hard dealing with suicide is. It’s heartbreakin’. I remember when my brother died, I was angry and sad that he left me all alone in this world. But… I knew he could not live without his wife. I learned to forgive him and be glad they were reunited in heaven.”
Arvin tensed. “I… don’t know how ta answer. I never think about it. Grandma and Lenora and Uncle… they all helped me forget about it. I still remember the day like it was yesterday, but I never think about it.”
I nodded, understanding. “I have a feeling you haven’t let go of ‘em yet, Arvin.”
“Of course I have,” he snapped defensively. “Life moves on. I ain’t got time to waste on thinking about ma and pa.”
“If you have enough time to waste on me, I’m sure you mind finds the time.”
“When I’m with you, time ain’t ever bein’ wasted.”
I chuckled, melting from his words. I pressed a kiss to his lips. “Sure, lover boy. We’re being really productive up here in this tree.”
“I love ya, Y/n. Ain’t nothing you could do that would drive me away.”
“Good. I don’t plan on testing that,” I giggled. “I love ya too, Arvin Russell. I love ya to bits. You’re the cherry fillin’ to my empty pie crust, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.”

Arvin didn’t care much about his birthday, he never bothered planning any sort of celebration or party, he found it all unnecessary. He loved to celebrate your birthday though, and your anniversary, and Christmas, any opportunity to spoil you really. You liked spoiling him too, but he always appreciated the gesture much more than he cared about any of the actual gifts. He just wasn’t a very materialistic person, which is why this year you’d decided to give him an experience for this birthday instead of any physical object.
You would have loved to fly him to some exotic location and have some big romantic weekend, but you couldn’t afford anything like that. So you went with something much simpler, camping. One of your friends offered the perfect spot for a romantic getaway, it was secluded in the woods, perked on top of a large hill with a great view, and less than a mile from a massive lake. You were overjoyed with the find, and the same friend helped you make a list of everything you would need. You proposed the idea to Arvin and he was excited, spending the weekend alone with you was his ideal birthday really.
Although he was a little reluctant to let you plan the trip and pay for it, you wouldn’t budge on the matter, and he was forced to concede eventually. He did double check your packing list though, just to make sure you hadn’t missed anything essential. Once you were both sure you had everything you’d need you loaded it all into his car and headed out. It was about an hour drive, and it was a bit difficult to navigate the truck to the campsite, but the view was worth the effort. You were surrounded by a circle of trees, the forest was buzzing and everything smelled fresh. Below your campsite you could see the corner of the lake, and in the middle of the campsite there was a makeshift fire pit born from the hundreds of campers who had been there before you.
You attempted at first to unload the car and set up the tent yourself, insisting Arvin relax, but there was no way he’d let you do it all yourself. So you two put up your tent and piled your things inside. By the time you had your campsite all set up the sun was starting to set, and both of you were getting hungry. For your first night you’d decided to pre pack some sandwiches for dinner, so all you had to do was gather a bit of wood and start a fire. You two snuggled up next to each other in some folding lawn chairs while you ate and watched the sun go down.
“This is incredible,” Arvin hummed contently before he looked over at you, “You know I think this is already my best birthday ever.”
You flushed, “Well it’s not actually your birthday until tomorrow, but thank you. It’s really nice out here.”
“Yeah it is,” he agreed, tracing his hand over one of yours, “We should get out the s’mores before it gets too dark.”
“Don’t you wanna save those for tomorrow?” you frowned, “I mean I didn’t bring a cake or anything so that’s kind of our only dessert.”
“I’m sure we’ll have enough for tonight and tomorrow,” he hummed, “Plus it’s my birthday trip, I think I’m entitled to some s’mores if I want them.”
You rolled your eyes and pushed yourself out of your chair, “I’ll be right back.”
You returned with graham crackers, a bag of marshmallows, several Hershey’s bars, and some metal skewers you thought would be perfect to roast the marshmallows on.
“Yummy,” Arvin hummed, ripping into the marshmallows and throwing one into his mouth.
You carefully placed one of them on your skewer and dipped it into the fire, “They’re so much better roasted.”
“They’re delicious either way,” he said with a mouthful of marshmallow, making you crinkle your nose.
“It’s rude to speak with your mouth full Arvin,” you scolded playfully.
He laughed, “Oh I forgot, you fell in love with me for my good manners,” he placed another marshmallow onto his skewer and shoved it into the fire, “Did you ever tell ghost stories when you were little?”
You knit your brows as you tried to remember, “No, I don’t think so. There was rumor that one of the houses in town was haunted, but that’s the closest I can remember.”
He nodded, “Lenora and I used to tell them to each other,” his hand slipped over your leg, squeezing your thigh before he continued, “Not just when we were camping, but that always made them scarier. They’re so cheesy, I can’t believe I used to be scared of that shit…”
“That’s cute Arvin,” you laughed, “Do you remember any of them?”
He rubbed the back of his neck, “Uh, I don’t know, I haven’t thought about them in a long time.”
You pulled your marshmallow from the fire and began assembling your s’more, “Could you try and tell me one?”
“You wanna hear a cheesy ghost story?” he chuckled.
You nodded, “Of course, I like it well you tell stories, your voice is nice.”
He blushed and bit his cheek, “I suppose I probably remember enough…”
“Yay!” you cheered and leaned back in your chair, “Well get on with it.”
He let out a low hum as he pulled his burning marshmallow away from the fire. He blew it out, the marshmallow was nearly black, “It starts with this criminal, a murderer I think. I don’t remember exactly what happened to him but basically he loses his hand and it gets replaced with a hook. So he’s this hook handed killer, and he was always going after pretty young girls,” he glanced over at you, “It took years to catch him, and when they finally did they hung him. So he dies, but since his soul was so twisted it couldn’t rest properly, and he came back as a ghost. Now he wanders all over the country looking for more pretty young girls to kill. Oh!” he cracked a big smile, “And he especially likes girls with (y/h/c).”
You rolled your eyes, “I can’t believe that used to scare you.”
“That one didn’t scare me, it scared Lenora,” he defended, “I used to tell it better.”
Arvin kept trying to recall more and more details about the story while you finished your s’mores. You were almost certain that he was making it up just to try and scare you. You humored him, nodding along with whatever new details he added, laying your head on his shoulder while he talked. You two continued like that until the fire started to sizzle out. Arvin volunteered to fully extinguish it so you could get comfy in your makeshift bed.. Inside the tent you’d laid your sleeping bags on top of each other to provide a bit of padding and brought a pile of blankets to keep yourselves warm. You wanted the tent to be as comfortable as possible so you’d brought more than a fair share of blankets and pillows.
“Fires good,” Arvin promised as he crawled into the tent, zipping it closed behind him, “You look comfy.”
You smiled, “I’ll be comfier once you’re in here with me.”
“I’m coming,” he promised as he began stripping his clothes.
He got down to his boxers and crawled under the blankets beside you, “Ready for bed kitten?”
“I’m pretty tired,” you snuggled up to his chest.
“Me too,” he wrapped his arms around you and pressed his lips to the top of your head, “Thank you for planning this, I love you.”
“I love you too,” you cooed back.
He held you close to him until you fell asleep. Admittedly it was more difficult than normal, it was harder to drift off without your comfy mattress under you. Snuggling up to Arvin helped, but you already knew you wouldn’t be sleeping as deep as you normally would. Sure enough you found yourself waking up shortly after you drifted off, Arvin was already deep asleep, but you were suddenly uncomfortable. You rolled over so your back was against Arvin’s chest. He scooted closer to you and you closed your eyes in hopes of drifting off again.
When you fell asleep the second time you were able to fall deep enough into sleep that you started to dream. You would have hoped to have some sort of sweet dream about you and Arvin, instead you were struck with the hook man. In your dream he came stalking up to your tent, ripping it open and yanking you from the inside. Luckily you were woken up before anything too gruesome could happen, the sounds of the wind grazing your tent had drawn you back to reality. Arvin was still sleeping soundly, his face buried in your neck, his lips placed against your bare skin. His tight grip helped to relax you after the bad dream. You took a deep breath and closed your eyes, sinking back into him with a smile. The adrenaline started to die down and your pounding heart relaxed.
Until the wind picked up again. This time it was more than just the wind, you heard some sort of awful, high pitched screeching that made your skin crawl. Arvin stirred but didn’t wake up. You sank under the blankets, pulling them up to your eyes, which were darting rapidly around the tent. The screeching sounded again, you tried to calm yourself but your mind was already getting irrational. Really you knew it was just a stray branch or the car, but you couldn’t help picturing the hook man from your dreams. Stalking you outside the tent, running his hook over the car, getting ready to tear you away from Arvin and murder you.
With a small squeal you flipped to face Arvin again, “Arvin,” at first your voice was quiet, still unsure if you wanted to wake him, “Arvin,” this time you were a little louder, pushing against his chest, “Arvin!” you snapped suddenly, just in time for the wind to pick up once more.
He groaned, reaching up to rub one of his eyes before he opened it, “Something wrong baby?”
Your cheeks flushed, suddenly feeling embarrassed that you’d woken him up, “I, uh, I had this kind of weird dream.”
His lips tugged to a frown, “What about?”
“The hookman…” you uttered shamefully.
He smiled and started to chuckle, “Really?”
“Yes!” you fell onto your back dramatically, “Then I woke up and I started hearing this screechy sound, it's freaking me out.”
“I’m sorry baby, I’m sure it was just a tree or something though,” he wrapped his arm around your middle and pressed his lips to your ear, “Or an owl, or anything. We’re in the woods, there are weird noises sometimes.”
“I know,” you groaned, “It’s just nerves.”
He nodded and moved right up next to you, “Well just come here. I promise it was normal forest noises, but if it was a hookman, I would protect you. You’ve got nothing to worry about, you’re always safe with me.”
You snuggled back to his chest, wanting to feel him close again, “Promise?”
“Course, I don’t care if it’s the hookman or the devil himself,” he mumbled against your forehead, “I wouldn’t let anyone hurt you, I love you too much for that.”
“I love you too Arvin,” your cheeks flushed and you smiled, “It’s probably after midnight now.”
“You think so?”
You nodded, “Yeah, so happy birthday.”
“Mmm, thank you baby,” he yawned and leaned in for a quick kiss, “I’m about to pass out again, but you can wake me up if you need me.”
“Of course, thank you hunny,” you cooed sweetly, “You always know just what to say.”
He said nothing, simply pressing his lips to your head again before sleep overtook him.

It had always felt like time moved a little slower in Knockemstiff. Like the seasons seemed to pass by a little slower, the trees took more time to drift from one shade to the next, the sun lingering way into the Autumn and the snow layering the ground until way into the Spring. The town's people seemed to adapt to this molasse-type attitude, moving from one mundane task to the other, trying desperately to keep up with their neighbours, keeping their lawn freshly mowed and hedges neatly trimmed. All this not to cause a stir or be the subject of small-town gossip, working hard during the week and then Church on the weekend to ensure that no one saw them slipping away from their faith.
Of course, your family had always been a little different. Your momma had the dark demons that she fought daily, working a sinful job to make enough money to support those awful habits, moving from one man to the next and trying to fill that void deep within her. Your daddy had taken off when you were young, leaving you with no lasting memories, no pictures, no guidance or paternal figure. You never understood how he could have left his family the way he did, and those answers would remain unanswered as your momma refused to speak about him.
All that had left you with this dull and numb ache in your chest, growing up in a typical family had been all you ever wanted, but each year that passed, it felt like you grew further away from that being a possibility. Now grown as you were, it looked like the only sense of an ordinary family you would ever get would be from the one you created on your own and creating one in Knockemstiff wasn’t something you wanted.
Until you could get away, hopefully towards a better and better job. This bitter pit of guilt swirled in your chest whenever you thought about leaving Knockemstiff, a sour reminder that you were abandoning your momma and leaving her to a life of whoring and drugs. There had been times when you had tried to help her away from these addictions, but each time it left you with a busted lip or hurt from her venomous words. It never took much backtalk for your momma to remind you that you were nothing more than a mistake, a spiteful little reminder of the man that had left her in this awful town and of the beauty you had sapped from her very soul.
You needed to get away. You needed a fresh start somewhere else. You needed to venture forth, find new people, conjure a story about your past and never allow anyone to lead you back home.
In the little spare time between shifts, you took the time to complete the job application, assuring that you were putting your best self forward for your potential employers. There was nobody in your life that you could use to read over your application; there was a part of you that wondered if your momma had basic literacy skills, never seen her pick up a book or even glance at a menu from the diner before. Whilst far too scared to take it back to work again and ask Gillian, if you were to be found out by Jeremiah, then you’d be out on your ass before you knew it. No, instead, you just sealed away the application securely and took it to the local post office.
Daintily you passed the envelope over to Jessie Kingsgate behind the counter. Never one for making many conversations, she simply inspected the address for a moment, chewing on a wad of pink gum in her mouth and raising her brows, almost surprised by a letter going out of town. Then she dropped it into the bucket beside her, accepting the payment and handing back your change.
The second you saw that letter slip away was like a wave of relief washed across your entire frame. This was going to be the first step toward a fresh start. A new job meant you could find a tiny home, start attending the local Church, maybe find a good and honest husband and start a little family. Nothing too big, just a couple of kids running around that would keep you busy. They would never have to know about Knockemstiff, about your life before, about your lack of a family. No, you could just be their family.
As you pulled open the door to the post office, you practically skipped into the fresh morning air. The warm sun sank into your exposed skin as the worn sneakers you wore found the cracked sidewalk. It seemed like a lot of work needed to be done in this town. It had been like this since you were a kid, and it didn’t seem like they would be repairing anything soon.
“We jus’ keep runnin’ into each other, don’t we?” A low drawl came from beside you, turning your head to catch the Sheriff approaching with a stack of magazines in his arms and a smirk tugging at his lips. It wasn’t that you were shocked to see him, but somewhat surprised to see him dress in more casual clothes, a tan set of slacks with a pearly white button-down tucked into them. Seeing him dressed in something apart from his uniform was such a strange sensation; you supposed there was a naïve part of you who was reminded that he had a life outside his demanding job. “How’re you feelin’, girl?”
“O-oh, I-I’m well, Sheriff.” You spluttered back in his direction, eyes cast downwards, only focusing on those cracks and only then hearing his chortle in response. “Eyes up…” He commanded; your body obliged, finding those dangerously alluring eyes. “D’you see me wearin’ a uniform, sweetness? There ain’t no need t’call me Sheriff if I ain’t in one…” Calloused fingers reaching out to pinch your chin. Not a moment later, tugging away from his grip, weary of those eagle eyes and loose lips around town that might have mentioned the Sheriff's lingering touches. “Go ahead an’ answer my question again the way I like…”
“Oh-okay…” Then clearing your throat as if to cough away the heavy nervous stutters on your tongue. “I, uh… I’m good, Mr Bodecker…” Even now, trying to find a way to keep things formal, hesitantly, you met his eyeline again, observing how he squinted shortly. Lee wanted you to relax in his presence, but you appeared anxious around him. He wondered if it was because he was a figure of authority or just a man vying for your attention.
As if to put you at ease, a hearty chuckle tumbled from Lee. “S’pose it’s better…” He noted, eyes flickering across your frame and continuing. “It’ll be somethin’ we can work on together, hmm?” Then following with a wink that sent a shock of electricity directly down your spine. “You headin’ over t’the diner, sweetheart?” Quirking a brow as he drew his arms across his chest, waiting for you to compose yourself before answering.
It was clear you were heading into work, wearing your sweet little sunflower yellow waitressing dress with your nametag clearly displayed on your chest. It certainly wasn’t something you’d choose to wear outside of work. “Th-that’s right, Mr Bodecker.” You replied, brushing your hands down your dress, trying to smooth out the rough material, then adding. “I-I need t’be goin’ or else I’mma be late, and Mr Henley is gonna be mighty mad.” At this, Lee displayed a tempered look. “Then let me give ya a ride there…”
An unsettling feeling swirled in your stomach, making you want to refuse, but as you found his eyeline, it became clear that wasn’t an option. “Don’t wanna be disturbin’ your day-off, sir.” “Y’ain’t…” His response was far too quick, placing his hand on your lower back and leading you toward the parking lot. Your eyes scanned the spaces in search for his cruiser, but instead, you were greeted by his shiny Pontiac GTO. There was no disguising the surprised look that pressed onto your face as you both approached. “Y’best wipe that look from ya face, or else it’ll get stuck that way once the wind changes.” You’d never felt more like a child at that moment, climbing into the car as Lee popped open the passenger door for you.
Sliding into the plush leather seats, you were utterly speechless. The entire vehicle was pristine like it hadn’t been driven often. Maybe he kept it under a cover in his garage but actively cleaned and kept it well-tuned. The driver’s door opened, and Lee climbed in, too; it didn’t look like the car could belong to someone like him. Perhaps you were used to seeing him in the cruiser. This Pontiac was much too stylish for him. “Y’got somethin’ y’wanna say?” Quirking a brow at you. “N-no, sir. No.” You hiccupped in response, watching him observe you for a moment longer, smirking a second later and igniting the ignition with a thunderous engine roar; the entire car shook violently as it tore to life.
It was bizarre. It was the type of car you expected to be pulled over by the cops, certainly not driven by one or the Sheriff. The drive through the small town drew attention, heads casting in the direction of the noisy muscle car that rolled by. It made you duck your head down to avoid their inquisitive gaze; it couldn’t be a good look to be seen being driven to work by the Sheriff again. It didn’t feel as intimate when in the cruiser, but now his personal car was very different.
With a jerking turn, Lee turned into the diner's parking lot, tugging his car over two spaces greedily and then tilting his head in your direction. “Y’remember what we talked ‘bout, girl?” Your brows scrunched in confusion. “Y’remember the type a’things this town’ll talk ‘bout?” He pressed again, tutting as that dumb little look stayed pushed to your expression. “Forgetful bunny…” He muttered coldly. “If they see ya hangin’ ‘round with the likes a’Arvin Russel or Ari Levinson, then they’re gonna start thinkin’ your jus’ as much a delinquent as they are…” Lee spelt out for you. “Now, y’don’t want people thinkin’ the worst a’you, do ya? These townsfolk might start thinkin’ you’re spreadin’ them pretty legs and becomin’ a no-good whore… Now, that ain’t very godly, is it? Ain’t a good look for a look girl like yourself…”
As he brought your religion into question, it made a hard shudder course down your spine, hands clenched into little fists on your lap and too scared to break eye contact with the man.  No, you didn’t want people speaking about you behind your back and spreading all sinful, untrue rumours. A small part of you wondered if that was something that could even be avoided with Lee spending all this time around you. That could be something that they would speak about…
It wasn’t like Lee was a particularly liked or respected man in this town. Sure, he was feared, but most people spoke awful behind his back. He had a reputation for not being very law-abiding for being a lawman. Not to mention the rumours that had stirred after his wife had left him. Of course, you didn’t know the true story, nobody did apart from Lee and his wife, but it didn’t stop the rumours from floating around town. Rumours about infidelity, infertility and then the darker ones that were spun too. You had only been in High School when these rumours were floating around, truly paying them no mind, choosing to keep your head down and focus on your studies. You did know that it had almost cost the Sheriff the election; the whole situation painted him badly. Not much of a family man without a family around him.
“Y’jus’ need t’make sure y’keep that precious nose clean, hmm?” His finger pressed delicately against the tip of your nose, dragging you back to the present. “Stay away from them boys who ain’t gonna do ya any good…” Lee’s final comment came with a teasing smirk. “Now, go on and get t’work. I got things I need to be doing that don’t involve your pretty behind followin’ me all day.” A defiant little part wanted to remind him that it was his idea to give you a ride and to have this conversation. Still, the submissive role simply nodded, hastily gathering your things and clambering from the Pontiac. “Ain’t you got somethin’ t’say?” His voice caused your entire frame to freeze.
“Oh…” Turning on your heel to duck your head back into the vehicle, mouth completely dry as you continued. “Th-thank you, sir-Mr… Mr Bodecker…” Your spluttering and stuttering only caused that same smug smile to twitch onto his lips, sensing the way his eyes admired every dip and curve of your body whilst you rushed across the parking lot into the diner. Never had your simple work dress felt so revealing.
As you enter the diner, allow a heavy breath to escape your lips. The door to Jeremiah’s office swung open with a resounding squeak, head popping around and perturbed gaze in your direction. It wasn’t difficult to see that Jeremiah was frustrated, jet black eyes narrowed whilst his cheeks were a blotchy shade of red from his frustration. “I-I-…” Eyes casting towards the clock, only a few minutes late for your shift, but that was enough to put you into the warpath of your quick-tempered boss. “My office. Now.” Jeremiah ground out, listening to how the customers began talking in hush whispers. It was no secret that Jeremiah treated his staff like trash, he thought he was a little sneakier, but the town knew.
Never would you have dreamed about saying the type of things that Jeremiah had growled at you. It truly made you feel worthless the way he informed you that you were a waste of oxygen, hissing that he should never had given you a job, reminding you of all the ways you continued to make mistakes, all the money you had cost him to the very penny like he kept a ledger. If you weren’t desperate for the money, you probably would have quit on the spot, but you needed to keep a roof over your head and food in your belly. “Now, get t’fuckin’ work before I send ya home without pay.” You turned on your heel at that final threat and dashed towards the door, hearing his barking threat continue. “Consider y’self fuckin’ lucky t’still be workin’ here…” No part of you felt lucky.
It was humiliating, and this wasn’t the first time. Then you had sobbed for an hour in the bathrooms, earning another rage-filled talk about wasting more time. It was such an abusive and hostile environment to have to work in. The day when you could finally quit would be the best day ever.
Tumblr media
To try and smooth things with Jeremiah, you proceeded to pick up a few extra shifts. All morning you happily worked alongside Gillian, but around midday, her shift ended, and she left with her latest fling. It wasn’t hard to see that Bobby was clearly smitten with Gill, and that was the type of love you wanted, to have someone so enamoured and adoring you. The way that Bobby fawned over her didn’t faze Gillian; watching how he nervously fluttered around her only made her huff and roll her eyes, merely bored or bothered by his presence.
It was a gruelling day of working until closing, feet aching terribly in your sneakers, arms weak from carrying trays of plates and pots of coffee. All you wanted to do was crawl into your bed and sleep for the next week. There was that little reminder if your head that in eight hours, you’d have to do this entire dance all over again. It felt like you were stuck in this endless cycle of work and then home and then back to work to only come back home. Something inside of you begged for something new, something different.
The door opened with a delightful jingle; gazing over your shoulder, a bright smile caught your lips as Ari approached the counter, hands dug deep into his pocket to capture a loose cigarette and place it between his lips. “Hi…” You squeaked sweetly, rounding the counter to be stood on the other side of him, playing anxiously with the strings of your coffee-stained apron. “Ah, hey…” A cloud of smoke emerged from his lips with his greeting. “Y’seen Gill?”
“Did she not tell ya that Bobby was takin’ her out?” Brows shot up in surprise that Gillian wouldn’t have mentioned it to Ari. He simply smirked and shook his head as if this was some regular occurrence. “Bobby LeRoe?” You just nodded in confirmation. “Jeez, the poor guy had no idea what he’s getting’ into…” The notion that Gillian would eat him alive was a sentiment you shared, giggling at his words and leaning onto the counter, feeling comfortable in Ari’s warm, sunshine-like presence, genuinely basking in his glow. “Jus’ wish she’d told me, so I didn’t waste a trip here on my way home…”
“Oh, right…” You echoed sympathetically, tapping your fingers quietly against the wooden counter. “Um, did you wanna coffee or beer before y’leave, Ari?” You quizzed politely, observing him take another drag of his cigarette and then nodding, confirming that he wanted a coffee. “Sure, I can get that…” Then fluttering across to collect a freshly cleaned cup and a pot of coffee, flitting back to place it down and pouring whilst quizzing. “Ya had a long day?” You wouldn’t often attempt to make small talk with the customers, but with Ari, it was different. Whilst growing up, you had the biggest crush on him. It was difficult with Gillian being your best friend and his little sister. Not like that was the reason that had held you back. No, just being too shy to ever act in those situations.
“Had a long year…” Ari chortled cynically, rubbing his hand over his face. “It ain’t so bad when m’around you, though…” Lifting his tired gaze to meet your own, feeling the way your heart leapt to your throat, eyes sparkling with happiness from his little compliment. “Y’got home safe and sound after the party, right? Felt rotten ‘bout bailin’ on y’both like that…”
Your mind sank back to the night of the party, remembering how Ari had sprinted past you to evade the cops that had crashed the event. “Oh… Oh, it ain’t nothin’ t’worry ‘bout, Ari.” You assured him lightly. “I, uh… I got home safely…” Part of you wanted to end the sentence there, but Ari’s urged you on. “Um, I got a ride home with Sh-Sheriff Bodecker…” Your eyes quickly shot down to your hands on the counter, not wanting to see the judgement on his face.
A moment passed. “Bodecker?” You could feel the way his eyes bore into your delicate skin, trying to find if you were telling the truth or just yanking his chain. “You two goin’ steady or somethin’?” Instantly your head whipped up, eyes wide and mouth open. “What?” Your voice was a pitch higher than usual. “What? N-no, where’d y’get an idea like that?” You pressed, no hiding that you were appalled by the accusation alone.
“Dunno…” He shrugged. “Jus’ didn’t seem all that drunk when I last saw ya…” Slowly you blinked at him. “For him to be escortin’ y’home is jus’ a little strange.” Both your eyes met then, sharing a look. “Anyone would think the Sheriff was givin’ it t’ya…” Ari announced without caring about his surroundings; this late, the diner was almost empty apart from a couple of truckers passing through town and drunks that had been kicked from the local dive.
“Givin’ it…” You echoed his sentiment, a naïve mind not following what this could mean. Ari couldn’t hold the smirk that tugged at his lips. “Yeah…” He muttered almost to himself. “Somethin’ tells me y’ain’t that type a’girl…” A brief comment to himself again made you almost feel humiliated. “Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that… You’re a good girl…” The words of Sheriff Bodecker’s fluttered through your mind, constantly reminding you that you were a good girl and needed to continue to be one.
Awkwardly you shuffled from one foot to the other, rubbing your damp hands against your apron as you attempted to build the courage to speak again. “Y’really don’t like Sheriff Bodecker…” He refused to meet your gaze then, focusing on his almost empty coffee mug. “He ain’t all that bad, is he?”
His gaze finally met your own, eyes filled with disgust and anger. “You ain’t heard the rumours ‘bout his wife?” Your shoulders simply shrugged, and he let out a low huff, like a bear that had been disturbed from his slumber. “That pig is rotten t’the fuckin’ core. There ain’t a good damn thing ‘bout him.” There was no ignoring the anger that was beginning to bubble inside of Ari. “That fucker knew the situation we were in after losin’ our parents, and still he made it hell f’me to make any money. All whilst takin’ backhands from people doin’ way worse things…” The notion made your face scrunch in sympathy.
It was difficult for Ari and Gillian after losing their parents. Ari had been working in construction for a few years, but Gillian was only fresh out of High School. They worked hard to make enough to get by, and you knew that Ari had some dodgy side business just to make a little more. From what Gillian had told you, Ari sold some tame drugs to college students and rich folks the next town over. Of course, that all paled in comparison to the rumours about the type of dealings that Lee had been involved with, from rigging the town election to stay Sheriff to taking bribes from mafia types so they could go about their business in peace.
The cruel way that Ari spoke about the Sheriff made your insides clench anxiously. “D’you.. d’you really believe that… them rumours though? ‘Bout his wife?” They were the types of rumours held very heavily against Lee. Finishing his coffee with one final gulp, Ari shrugged. “There ain’t no smoke without fire, right?” He offered in response. To think that Lee was a bad person because of his professional actions was one thing, but to believe that he could kill his wife was something else entirely; you remembered the first time you’d heard that rumour, his wife’s best friend Annie was almost in tears in the Salon speaking about it had been such a long time since she had heard from her, theorising that Lee had buried her in the backyard to avoid any difficulties with the divorce, that rumour spread faster than any others and stuck harder too.
“Besides, I’m sick of speakin’ ‘bout that pig fuck…” He commented it was such a contradiction to his usual warm and kind self to hear him speak about someone with such visceral hate painted him in a very different light. “Did y’wanna a ride home? S’awful late for you t’be walkin’ on your own…” He commented that was the Ari you recognised, taking safety into account.
The warnings from this morning from the Sheriff sat like a lump in your throat, warning that you’d be seen as just as much of a delinquent as the people around you. It wasn’t like Ari was a bad person, you had known him for such a long time and it was simply a ride home. It wasn’t like the Sheriff was going to find out. No, you could convince yourself that it was sensible to ride with Ari, then you wouldn’t be tempted to walk through the forest to get home quicker. All these rules were tying you up in knots; too many different and specific things you found yourself worrying about. “If it ain’t too much trouble for ya…”
“Nah. It ain’t trouble.” Ari chuckled then, filling you with warmth and tenderness once again. He stood and stepped aside, waiting for you to get yourself ready to leave. Hastily you cleaned away and nabbed your personal effects from your locker, then rushed back to Ari. His hand found your lower back, guiding you from the diner towards his beat-up truck, tugging open the door and assisting you into the seat. “Thanks~” You quipped sweetly, focusing on popping in the seat strap as Ari climbed in beside you, lighting up a cigarette before asking. “You good?”
Simply nodding in response, Ari began the ride home. You could remember in High School all the stories that swirled the school yard from the pretty girls his year who would talk about being with Ari in his truck. The stories were enough to leave you blushing, whilst Gillian would just scoff and mutter insults under her breath. Now all the girls had left town or found a good man to marry, starting their own families, and their time with Ari Levinson was probably a distant memory. It didn’t mean that Ari had slowed down when it came to female attention, finding new women to spend time with, real women, older than you with real experience, knowing how to please him and keep his attention. They were all beautiful women, like something from a high-end fashion catalogue, all long legs, quaint figures and silky tresses. You were his sister’s best friend, nothing more than a hopeless little girl with no experience.
The drive back to your home was quiet; Ari’s eyes drifted from the road to where you sat, then back again. Humming along with the radio before finally deciding to say. “Y’seem like you got a lot on y’mind…” He mentioned thoughtfully, causing you to quirk a brow. “Like, y’always seem t’be thinkin’ ‘bout somethin’… like, somethin’ is botherin’ you.” For a moment, you remained very quiet; your anxious mind's inner workings were not something you opted to explain to many people. “You know, I got a lil’ somethin’ that might be able t’help with all them noisy thoughts. It’s somethin’ that might bring you a couple hours of jus’ nothin’…” Reaching into the breast pocket of his flannel shirt Ari pulled out a tin and from within a cigarette to drop into your waiting pam. “What is it?”
“Jus’ somethin’ y’smoke…” He replied quickly, sensing your apprehension; Ari continued. “It has a special herb mixed in, and it’ll make y’feel real nice. Promise. I’d never do anythin’ t’hurt ya…” There was such assurance in his voice that you broke into a smile, placing it away safely in your purse before watching as Ari pulled the truck down the dirt road towards your home. “When you’re feelin’ like s’all too much jus’ light that sucker up…” He directed with ease.
The further up the dirt path, the more you moved around on the bench, jostling as the suspension fought against the uneven ground. “Y’momma got herself a friend for the evenin’?” A knowing smirk drew across his lips, and anxiously you caught sight of the stylish car parked outside your rundown little home. It was one that you recognised the moment it came further into view.
Before you could even warn Ari, the door to your home opened with an unnaturally whack against the wooden wall, almost knocking the old porch light away from the rusted screws that kept it in place. Lee emerged with a perturbed look present on his features. Instantly your heart leapt to your throat, lodging there uncomfortably whilst Ari muttered harsh curses from beside you. His hands hurried to tidy away any suspicious objects from view inside his truck. “What the fuck?” He hissed in your direction. “What the fuck is he doin’ here?”
Stalking off the porch, Lee glared through the windshield at you and commanded lowly. “Out. Now.” Your apologetic gaze caught Ari’s before slipping from his truck, holding your purse tightly to your chest as the Sheriff approached, keeping his voice low but full of a strict authority. “Y’must have one short memory. We spoke ‘bout this not 12 hours ago.” He grumbled, making you flinch at the aggression in his tone. “Whilst you’re fuckin’ ‘round with all these boys…” You opened your mouth to argue then, but Lee just continued. “Y’momma was in a real bad way. Beaten bloody by one of her regulars. Luckily one of my deputies called me, and I made sure she didn’t spend the night in the cells for whorin’ herself…” Your heart thudded hard in your chest, squeezing your purse tight and shaking your head. “That what you been doin’ too? Whorin’ y’self out for Levinson?” Tears stung your eyes horribly. “N-no, sir. No, no…”
The pop of the truck door opened, and Lee’s anger was instantly turned towards Ari. “Son, get back in the fuckin’ car.” He grumbled at him lowly. “There a problem here, Sheriff?” Ari quirked a brow as he’s eyes found your own, seeing those little tears lining your lower lid, lower lip trembling as you fought to keep yourself composed. “Ari…” “I was jus’ givin’ my sister's friend a ride home. It’s real late and ain’t safe to be walkin’ these streets alone so late…” He commented; Lee’s jaw seemed to tick with anger, teeth clenched so hard you thought they might break. “S’pose wouldn’t be so bad if the fuckin’ cops did anythin’ in this town instead of jus’ stuffin’ their faces, drinkin’ themselves stupid and visitin’ the whore house…”
“Ari, please…” You whimpered into the compressed air. “Hands against the hood,” Lee commanded suddenly, and Ari looked at him a little perplexed. “I said, hands against the hood.” He slammed his hand against the warm metal; Ari turned reluctantly and squeezed his eyes closed, prepared for Lee to find some illicit paraphernalia on his person. “Need t’start watchin’ that mouth ‘round me, Levinson. Could a’let that attitude slide after y’parents…” Ari visibly tensed at the mention of them. “But I ain’t gonna have you disrespectin’ me no more.” Lee was patting him down, pulling out lighters, cartons of cigarettes and then suddenly, you yelped. “Please, stop this…” Lee looked at you, and Ari made a breathy noise. “Please… you… you said my-my momma was in a bad way… please…” At that moment, Ari knew that you’d saved him from a night in the cells or possibly worse.
Again, you see that Lee’s jaw is tight, taking a step backwards from Ari and pushing him back towards the driver’s seat of his truck. “Go home, Levinson. Don’t come ‘round here again.” The threat lingered between you three before Lee’s dark gaze found your own. “Inside. Now.” He commanded, and again you followed without hesitation, unable to move quickly enough away from the firm hand that pressed into your lower back, guiding you away from Ari. “Silly little girl.” He muttered under his breath as he pushed you into the house. “Ain’t listenin’ t’me. How many times do I need t'say it, bunny?” Suddenly your back was pressed against the wall and Lee looking into your eyes, anger bubbling onto his face. “Keep thinkin’ you’re a good girl, but y’keep tryin’ t’prove me wrong.”
“I-I am… am good…” You tell him, voice jumping and squeaking horribly in your throat. “Then fuckin’ act like it…” He spat out. “Ain’t no one gonna wanna make a wife out of a whore.” He growled, leaning down, his face so close to your own that you could feel his whiskey-soaked breath drawing waves over your features. “You need t’get it into your head, bunny. You need a ride. You need someone t’talk with. You need someone t’fix your sink. You need anythin’ then you jus’ call me. I’ll look after you. I’ll fix anythin’. I’ll make the bad things go away.” His voice was nothing more than a growl. “Jus’ don’t talk… Jus’ nod you head ‘cause that little brain understands.” You did. “Good girl.” He let out a shallow breath. “Give daddy a little kiss.” Your body froze completely. “Jus’ to… t’say that you’re sorry… Jus’ a little… little kiss.”
Part of you wanted to push Lee away; you didn’t want to kiss him, you just wanted to check that your momma was alright, but it didn’t seem like Lee was going to let you free anytime soon. Leaning up onto the tips of your toes, you carefully brushed your lips against his own, pecking his lips just gently, a quick peck. “Good girl.” He breathed out, and suddenly you had room to breathe again, able to escape his tight grasp and rush to your momma’s aid.
Lee hadn’t been lying when he said your momma was in a bad way; laying out across the couch, Mable was littered with these discoloured bruises and deep cuts, the sight of finger marks across her arms, her nose looked like it might’ve been broken too, especially sounding like her breathing was different, it was real deep and almost wheezing. Tears sting your eyes as you slip down to her side and take her hand, squeezing it between your fingers. “I gave her somethin’ for the pain,” Lee explained from where he stood in the doorway. “Y’need me t’stay tonight?”
“No.” The answer flew from your mouth much quicker than you intended. “Uh, no… no, sir.” You retconned, keeping your voice smaller and sweeter, not wanting to infer his wrath again. “No, jus’ wanna look after her…” Then standing, brushing down your dress and looking towards Lee. “Th-thank you for… for bringin’ her home, Mr Bodecker. Dunno what I would’a done if you’d ended up in the cells.” You explained, wrapping your arms around yourself and gifting Lee a kind glance. “That’s better…” He muttered softly, crossing the room to be standing in front of you, reaching out to place his hands on your hips. “You’re welcome. Like I said, I jus’ wanna look after you… that extends t’your family too…” His voice was tender; you could only nod in response. “Ya need anythin’ jus’ call my number or the station, and they’ll patch you through right away.” For a moment, you expected Lee to steal another kiss, but instead, he took a step back, receding down the hallway and out of your home.
When Lee was gone, you felt like you could finally breathe again, dropping down and covering your face with your hands. How had you gotten yourself into this situation? How had you been caught in the Sheriff’s sight? How were you gonna explain any of this to Ari? How would Gillian react once he told her everything that had happened? The questions spun around your mind wildly, leaving you almost hyperventilating on the ground. Tonight, you could just focus on fixing up your momma, but eventually, you would have to face each of those questions.
