Arvin wasn’t one to offer help to people, much less a stranger, but you had caught his eye. He stood by his car after filling his tank with gas and watched you stare at the gas pumps with a puzzled look on your face. He had seen you pull into the gas station with such confidence, but that was all gone now that you had to pick the right pump to put in your car. Arvin debated driving away and letting you figure it out by yourself since after all, he didn’t even know you. But after watching you hesitantly reaching for the diesel for the third time, he decided to speak up.
“Need help miss?” He asked as he approached you. You stiffened up at the sound of his voice and took an instinctive step away from him.
“No. I’m fine, thanks.” You replied without looking at him.
“You sure about that?” Arvin asked as he watched you hesitantly pick up the diesel pump.
“Said I don’t need any help from the likes of you, all right?” You said again. “Just leave me alone and go on your way.”
“Sorry miss. Didn’t mean to trouble you. Just noticed you was putting diesel in your car, is all.” Arvin said and raised his hands in defense.
“Diesel?” You paused and looked down at the pump in your hands.
“Yeah, darling. That right there is diesel.”
“Psh. I knew that. I like diesel.” You lied and brought the pump over to your car.
“Oh, my bad. Didn’t know that. Can I ask if you also like your car blowing up?” Arvin asked sarcastically.
“Excuse me?”
“Diesel will clog your fuel system and keep the car from startin. If you push the gas pedal too much, whole car will burst in flames. Seen it happen right in front of me once. The guy barely made it out alive.”
“Oh.” You froze and looked down at the pump in your hands.
“Could help you out, if you like.” He offered again.
“No thank you. I said I was fine.” You repeated, in a kinder tone this time. Arvin nodded and took a step back as he watched you put the diesel pump back. You looked between the other two pumps for a minute before hesitantly grabbing the one in the middle.
“Um….” You hesitatingly looked to Arvin to see if you were about to make another fatal mistake. He shook his head and held up one finger to let you know you needed pump number one. You gave him a tight smile before putting back the pump in your hand and picking up the first one. You put the pump in your car and just stood there until Arvin put his hand over yours to squeeze the pump. You felt the gas flow out and looked at Arvin with an embarrassed smile.
“Thanks.” You said quietly.
“No problem, doll.” He chuckled and felt his face flush from how close you were.
“Sorry I was short with you before. I have a hard time trusting men sometimes.” You admitted without looking into his eyes.
“Yeah? Seems we have that in common.”
“I just didn’t know if you were gonna fill my car up and then try to get me to repay you or something.”
“Repay me?”
“You know. With a kiss or something.”
“Darling, I’m no gentlemen, but I’m no villain either. I’d never try and get you to do something you didn’t want to do. Just saw a pretty lady struggling and wanted to offer my help. That’s all.” Arvin assured you, and you felt yourself believing him.
“Oh. Well thats very nice of you. Sorry I was rude.”
“No need to be sorry. Got a sister back home and I hope she’s half as vigilant as you are. Can’t trust nobody in this town. Especially not the men.” Arvin said and looked around the gas station.
“Don’t I know it.” You sighed. Arvin noticed the sadness in your voice and gave you a long look. He hadn’t seen you around before, which was strange since he thought he knew everyone in town. You were awfully pretty and the fact that you were a little mean to him made him like you even more.
“My names Arvin, by the way.” He told you.
“Y/n.” You smiled warmly at him.
“Nice to meet you, Y/n.” He returned the smile.
“You too, Arvin. Thanks again for the lesson.” You replied. You finished pumping the gas in your car and watched as Arvin returned the pump so you would know what to do next time.
“I’m really smart, by the way.” You said after a beat of silence.
“Huh?” He laughed in surprise.
“I’m really smart. I’m a school teacher down by the church. I went to college too. And I was the top of my class.” You told him, adding something every time you thought of a different example of your intelligence.
“Is that so?” Arvin asked, still confused what point you were making.
“I’m just telling you this so you don’t think I’m some dumb damsel in distress. I’m usually very smart but my daddy used to fill my car for me and never taught me how. He said it wasn’t a lady’s job to do it.”
“Well where’s your daddy now? Cause somebody needs to stop you from blowing yourself up.” Arvin chuckled.
“He don’t speak to me no more.” You said quietly, making Arvin feel guilty for poking fun at you.
“Oh. Sorry to hear that.” He said sincerely.
“It’s fine. I know what to do now thanks to you.“
“It was no trouble, darling. And next time, use this pump. Stay away from the diesel.” Arvin said and tapped the correct pump.
“I will. Thank you.” You smiled at him before looking over his shoulder. Arvin watched the way your smile dropped and the color drained from your face.
“Oh shoot.” You whispered.
“What’s wrong? Look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Arvin frowned and looked over his shoulder to try to find what you were looking at.
“My ex boyfriends just pulled up.” You gulped and pointed. Arvin immediately felt curious to see what kind of guy you used to date to see if he had a chance with you. When he saw a man in a red and white pinstripe shirt and white pants coming out of a flashy car, he cracked an amused smile.
“That candy ass used to be your boyfriend?” Arvin couldn’t help but laugh.
“Hush. He’ll hear you.” You whispered desperately and tugged on Arvins shirt to get him to stand in front of you.
“How come he’s dressed like a candy cane?” Arvin genuinely asked as he used his body to block you from your ex boyfriends view.
“I mean it, Arvin. Hush up.” You whispered harshly.
“Whats got you so wound up, baby doll? Did he take the breakup hard or something?”
“Truth is, he used to beat up on me.” You admitted. “It took all the strength I had to leave him. If he sees me right now, I’m scared of what he might do to get me back.”
“He beat on you?” Arvin looked over his shoulder again and felt his hands ball into fists. He found your unwillingness to be seen funny before, but was furious now. He looked at your ex with a clenched jaw and took a protective step in front of you.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be telling all this to a stranger.” You apologized, making Arvin look at you like you were crazy. He put his hands on your shoulders and rubbed up and down to try and calm you down.
“No, no it’s okay, darling. I don’t mind the story. Just mind the characters.” Arvin assured you before giving your ex another angry look. He didn’t want to lose his temper in front of you, but the thought of this pretentious guy beating up a school teacher was making his blood boil. He could feel his face getting hotter the longer he looked at your ex and the urge to beat him up got stronger.
“I know this is a little crazy to ask, but would you mind…” You started to ask but trailed off.
“Mind what?”
“Nothing. Forget it. Never mind.” You shook your head.
“Just ask me, darling. Worst I’ll say is no.”
“Would you mind doing something to make him think we’re together? Like kissing me or something?” You whispered through an embarrassed smile.
“Oh, so now you do want me to kiss you? I thought you were mean to me because you didn’t want me to try and kiss you.” Arvin smiled teasingly. He knew the gravity of the situation and was trying to calm you down a little so you wouldn’t be freaked out.
“I know what I said before.” You rolled your eyes. “But this is important. If he thinks I got a boyfriend, he’ll leave me alone.”
“I see. And you want me to pretend to be your boyfriend?”
“Just until he’s gone.”
“I think I can manage that.” Arvin shrugged before pulling you into a kiss. He slipped and arm around your waist and pressed you against your car to kiss you, taking your breath away in the process. You didn’t feel time moving as you kissed him but did feel the fear leaving your body. After spending the last eight months thinking all love ever did was break and burn and end, you felt it begin again. When you pulled away, you looked into Arvins eyes, no longer feeling like he was a stranger.
“Well I’ll be. Didn’t think I’d be seeing you ever again, toots. What are you doing here?” Your ex asked, making you and Arvin jump in surprise. You’d been so engrossed in each other that you hadn’t heard him walk up. Arvin could feel you shaking so he tightened his grip on your waist and shifted his body weight forward in a threatening way.
“What are we doing here? At the gas station? Take a fat fucking guess, dip shit. We’re putting gas in her car.” Arvin scoffed and looked at your ex like it was ridiculous to ask. You let out a shocked laugh and turned your face to the side to try and hide it. Your ex noticed the way Arvins arm was around you and his eyes darkened.
“I’m sorry, who the hell is this?” He asked you, the anger in his voice giving you flashbacks to worse times.
“Arvin Russel. Y/n’s boyfriend. And you are?” Arvin asked and held out a hand. You could tell this bothered your ex to hear you had a new boyfriend and felt your power come back to you. His face turned white as he looked at Arvin in shock. You tightened your grip on Arvin and looked up at him with a loving smile to really sell your story.
“Chuck Greenwood.” Chuck said and hesitantly shook Arvins hand. Arvin made sure to squeeze Chucks hand hard enough to make it hurt as he shook it.
“I didn’t realize you had a boyfriend.” Chuck said to you as he pulled his hand away from Arvin.
“Well I do.” You shrugged and leaned in Arvin. Chucks eyes brewed with jealousy as he watched the two of you.
“I guess I would’ve known that if you ever answered my calls. Must be too busy moving on. Which you did pretty fast, one might say. Didn’t realize you were such a quick girl.” Chuck said in a condescending tone.
“Fuck you, Chuck.” You scoffed, taking everyone by surprise.
“What did you just say to me?” Chuck raised his voice.
“Believe she said fuck you, Chuck.” Arvin repeated with a shrug.
“Yeah. I did. I don’t answer your calls cause I don’t want to hear your nasty, agitating voice no more. And I moved on fast because I knew the entire time that I was with you that I wanted something better for myself. So as soon as I got away from you, I went and found better. And you don’t get to be mad about that.” You stated. You weren’t shaking anymore but Arvin still kept his arm securely around your waist.
“Who do you think you’re talking to?” Chuck growled and stepped up to you.
“You.” You said and shoved him back. Chuck stumbled back in surprise before clenching his fist. Arvin got ready to fight, but you were one step ahead of him. You grabbed the diesel pump and aimed it at Chuck like it was a gun. Chuck was immediately disarmed and held up his hands.
“You don’t scare me no more. Especially not when you’re dressed like a candy cane.” You said in a low voice. Arvin smiled proudly that you used his insult and leaned against your car to watch you.
“Now get lost before I spray you.” You added and held the pump up higher. Chuck ran away from you, tripping over his own feet before getting into his car to drive away.
“Where did that come from?” Arvin laughed in surprise once you were alone again.
“I have no idea. But it felt really good.” You smiled in excitement as you put the pump back.
“I bet it did. I’m proud of you, darlin. I hope you’re proud of yourself too.” Arvin smiled fondly at you.
“You know, I am. Thanks for your help, Arvin. I couldn’t have done that without you.”
“You’re very welcome, miss. But I think you could’ve gotten along without me just fine. What’s the story with him anyway?”
“He works at the mechanic shop my daddy owns. I don’t have any brothers so Chuck was like a son to him. Was even gonna pass down the family business to him. When I finally told my parents how he’d been treating me…”
“They took his side?” Arvin asked, hoping the answer was no. Instead, you gave him a sad smile and nodded your head.
“My parents said all men were like that. Told me to suck it up and marry him anyway so that we’d have someone to give the family business to once my daddy was gone.”
“I’m sorry, darling. That’s no fair. No fair at all.”
“I know. And that wasn’t even the end of it. When I told my daddy I broke up with Chuck, he told me he never wanted to see me again. Haven’t spoken to him since.” You said with a sad shrug. Arvin frowned and felt the urge to pull you into a hug and tell you everything would be okay. Since you were still pretty much strangers, he just put a hand on your shoulder and gave it a squeeze.
“My daddy wasn’t a good man either. I know it hurts.” He said in a soft tone. You looked into Arvins eyes and could tell this was not an emotion he was used to exhibiting. You gave him an appreciative smile and put your hand over his.
“Something else we have in common then.” You smiled coyly.
“Maybe we should go out sometime. You know, see what else we have in common.” Arvin suggested as a blush painted his cheeks. You noticed this and felt your heart flutter in your chest. For the first time in a long time, you trusted someone new. You took a pen out of your pocketbook before taking Arvins hand and writing your number on his wrist.
“This is my number. I promise I’ll pick up.”
“I promise I’ll call.” He grinned as he read over the number.
“I should really get going. But it was very nice to meet you, Arvin.” You smiled warmly at him and unlocked your car. Arvin opened the door for you so that you could get in, convincing you further that giving him a chance was the right thing to do.
“Was nice to meet you too, doll.” Arvin smirked as he shut your car door for you. You gave him a wave and started your car before pulling away.
“Wait a minute.” Arvin called out and jogged after your car. You stopped the car and rolled down your window to look at him.
“Aren’t you gonna kiss your boyfriend goodbye?” He smiled coyly as he leaned down to your window. You playfully rolled your eyes at him before leaning out the window to kiss him. You knew it was crazy to be kissing a man you just met, even for the second time, but it felt right.
“Goodbye. I mean it this time.” You laughed and pulled away.
When you got home that night, your phone rang before you even had a chance to set your bag down. Your heart skipped a beat as you went over to answer it.
“Hello?” You said into the phone, hoping to hear Arvins voice again.
“Hey.” Arvin replied. “So am I gonna have to wait until the next time you need gas to see you or are you free tomorrow night?”

“Momma’s taking me to get my hair done again tomorrow.” Betty bragged, earning ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhh’ from the small group of girls that sat with her, all except you. You were hardly paying attention to the bratty girl who you hardly considered a close friend of yours. You hung out with the clique at school, participated in most of the conversations, but you weren’t close enough with any of them to see them anywhere else besides during school. In fact, there were many times when you would sit or walk with them, but not be entirely there, this being one of them as you glanced at the boy across the lunch yard from you.
Arvin Russell, to many a quiet boy who made no difference in the course of their life, but to you, he was everything. You two were certainly a pair, nothing official in the eyes of others, but together you shared a connection so strong, you couldn’t imagine any sort of realistic future without him. You kept your relationship on the down low, preferring to meet up in private and only steal quick glances in public when others were around, especially your small girl crew. Even Arvin’s sister Lenora had no idea about you two, though she had her suspicions Arvin was with someone while he was out all evening doing what he played off as ‘studying’ or ‘partner work.’
Your secrecy wasn’t that you were ashamed of him, the complete opposite actually. The girls you hung around were considered quite popular in your small town high school, all stupid rich with the finest clothes and nothing, but the best cuisine for lunch (how they got such fancy food in a rural town was beyond you). From past drama, you also knew them to have a nasty habit of stealing one another’s partners, especially Betty who claimed she was better off alone, but had a different fling every month that she always ended up dumping. Though you weren’t completely sure, you knew that the news of your relationship with Arvin would put you both at risk of breaking up due to pressure and the chance for him to score someone better off than you, financially. Your insecurities had come up in conversation before with the boy you loved so dearly, but even after he had assured you that he would never do such a thing, you took no chances. Arvin was yours and you were forever his.
Your heart fluttered as you saw Arvin turn his head, meeting your stare as he grinned and winked at you. You blushed, hiding your smile by covering your mouth with your hand and subtly waving for him to turn back around in an attempt to get your head back into the conversation. You wouldn’t have succeeded if it weren’t for Ivy, another girl in the group who was seated next to you.
“Whatcha looking at y/n?”
You turned to her, eyes wide as you quickly regained composure and shrugged it off.
“Oh you know me! Always gawking off.” you awkwardly laughed, hoping to play it off. To your dismay, all the girls turned to look where you had been staring, seeing the back of Arvin’s hat covered head as he  obeyed your command to turn away, hiding his own grin.
“Hey, isn’t he that Russell boy?” one of the other girls asked, pointing him out. Your stomach dropped as conversation erupted around the boy who had your heart, something you definitely did not mean to happen.
“I hear he’s fucking his sister.”
“Oh don’t be silly Majorie! That boy couldn’t fuck a sock of he tried! He’s a virgin.”
“I don’t know about that. I’m betting you he has a whole six pack hidden under all that denim. Just look at those thighs!”
“You’re right. I bet he fucks better than half the actors in those rom-coms they keep coming out with.”
“None of those people are actually fucking, you idiot. That’s why it’s called acting.”
“Oh right, acting.”
You had heard enough. As if listening to them insult your beloved wasn’t enough to make you rage, the remarks they made about his body almost caused you to erupt. They were no better than the boys who harassed you all, sexualizing him in such a way, but you said nothing as you dusted off your skirt and packed up the rest of your lunch to leave. Betty, the unofficial ring leader, noticed as she perked up.
“Where ya going y/n?”
You smiled at her, hoping to not give away your anger.
“I just need to visit the ladies room before next period. I’ll see y’all later.”
“Do you want someone to go with you?” she offered, likely to send someone else instead of going herself. You shook your head. No way were you taking one of them with you.
“I’m alright thanks. Y’all can stay here and keep chatting, I don’t mind.”
Betty eyed you suspiciously, wondering what exactly you were hiding, but she didn’t voice her suspicions as she waved you off.
“Ok then, see ya.”
You walked back into the building and to your locker, spinning the lock dial to unlock it so you could put your lunch away and grab your books. As you opened the door, a folded piece of blue-lined paper fell from one of the aeration holes, fluttering down as it traveled to the floor, light as a feather. Once your hands were emptied, you bent over to pick it up and unfolded it. There were words written upon it, scribbled out in familiar handwriting that had you smiling at as you read through it.
Movie tonight? -A
You held it against your chest, closest to your heart as butterflies flew through your gut. You felt like flying right out of your shoes. As if it couldn’t get better, a voice sounded from behind you, low and slightly southern accented as the very person who wrote the note called out.
“So, what do ya say?” Arvin asked.
You turned around to find him stalking closer, noticing his hat slightly askew on his head as he neared you.
“I don’t know, that depends. Will there be … popcorn?” You asked, popping the p in a sultry tone and pausing for effect as you crossed your arms.
“Sure will.” he affirmed.
“And what about … soda?”
He leaned against the locker next to yours,  inches away as he smirked at you.
“All different kinds.”
You leaned against your open locker door, facing him as you wore your own smirk. You reached out to fix his hat, turning it so that it lay straight in his head as it should.
“But will there be … candy?”
He chuckled, reaching for the hand that you had used to fix his hat and entwining his fingers with yours.
“Why ya tryna be difficult darling? Of course there’d be candy.”
You giggled as he placed a chaste kiss on the back of your hand.
“We’ll in the case, I don’t see why I shouldn’t go.” you agreed, knowing both of you were very well aware that your answer would be yes all along. Arvin beamed at you.
“Great. I’ll pick ya up at 8:00 then and we’ll head over to the drive-in.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
Arvin leaned in, looking into your eyes and down at your lips. You didn’t pull away as he planted a kiss on them, pulling away for a second before going back in to kiss you again, really kiss you as his lips met yours. You almost gave in, never having gotten over the indescribable feeling of kissing him, but you knew better than to let him do that in public. You pulled away and scrunched your eyebrows in disapproval, a habit you had that Arvin loved. He thought you were extremely cute.
“Arvin,” you scolded. “Not in public. You know that.”
He shrugged, sliding a hand up to your face to cup your cheek, caressing it with his thumb.
“I’m sorry darling. Couldn’t help myself. You’re just so goddamn gorgeous.”
You blushed, turning to look at the floor and you pulled from his grasp and turned to walk the other way, the direction of your next class. You hoped he hadn’t seen your cheeks redden, but you knew he had.
“Later.” you called back to him, turning to smile at him as he smirked at you.
“Later then. I’ll pick you up tonight.”
“Don’t be late.” you teased, in a warning tone.
“Wouldn’t dream of it.”
He closed your locker door for you, turning the opposite directions to head to his own class.
As promised, Arvin picked you up on time, even a few minutes early to give you plenty of time to pick out your snacks. You held his hand the whole way there, his thumb tracing soothing circles on the back of your hand, the car ride silent save for the light radio playing. You didn’t talk, but you were both perfectly happy. Comfortable in each other’s presence and thankful for one another.
Arvin found a nice parking spot near the back of the drive-in, making sure it was still in view of the movie screen and yet out of the way of the projector to avoid being illuminated by it.
After the sun had set and the cool darkness of the new night blew in, the movie began playing and you two watched the beginning. As the night went on, you had eaten through a third of your popcorn and drank most of your soda as Arvin snacked on a some candy, but your snacks were tossed aside halfway through the film as you two got less involved in the movie and more involved in each other, caught up in a heated kiss. You couldn’t exactly recall how it started, who initiated it, any of the details really. All you knew was that he smelled like the cologne you knew him to wear since the day you two met and he tasted like red vines.
Your arms were wrapped around his neck, holding you closer to him as he had his own around your waist, supporting you so you could do just that. You felt sparks as your lips moved against one another, slow turning to passionate in mere moments. You felt his tongue against your lower lip, seeking entrance which you denied playfully, grinning against his mouth. Arvin moved one of his hands down and lightly pinched your bum, causing you to gasp in surprise and giving him the opportunity to explore your mouth as he wished. You gave in, pulling on the roots of his hair as payback while simultaneously never wanting the moment to end as you moved your tongue in sync with his. There were no leaders, no one followed the other. It was a bond, simple as that, a bond that you shared and you personally never wanted to break.
As the movie continued on, you found yourself moving more and more onto Arvin’s lap until you were straddling him, your hands tangled in his hair as he fondled with your bum, feeling you all over, anywhere he could reach. Your lungs burned as they longed for air, your breathing heavy as you and Arvin’s lips finally left each other’s. You looked at him through your lashes, you head tilted down as you sat a little higher above him than you would at your usual height, his lap giving you a small boost. He eyed you in front of him, breathing heavily as his left hand moved up your body to cup your face, his thumb tugging at your now puffy and red bottom lip. He leaned in closer, your noses touching as he mumbled against your lips.
“You’re beautiful, you know that?”
You chuckled, nuzzling your nose against his. It was now that heat would have flushed out your cheeks, but they were already rosy from kissing him.
“No more sweet talk, Russell. Kiss me again.”
“I only said one thing.”
“Mmm, I know, but it was too much.”
You pecked his lips, ready for it to get as intense as it was again until Arvin smirked and pulled away, fake glaring at you after you rejected his compliment. You were the one who cupped his chin this time, smiling at him.
“Hey. You know I’m just joking.”
You leaned into him, resting your forehead against his as he helped adjust you so that you sat comfortably against him, his arms wrapping back around you.
“I love you Arvin Russell.” you confessed.
It wasn’t the first time, you had already said your firsts months ago, but the effect you had on him, especially when you said those words, it never wore off. It was the same for him. Those three little words and he would have you melting, effortlessly, every damn time. Like a weakness, they got you at your most vulnerable. He pecked your lips again, this time with a little more force, his lips lingering on yours for a little longer. He picked up his head to break it, only for a second as he told you sincerely, “I love you, y/n y/l/n.” and before you knew it, his lips were back on your and you started making out again, intertwined and not to be unwound until at least the end of the movie.
School the next day felt long, nothing out of the norm, but you didn’t like it regardless. Not when you could be away from it all in the passenger's side of Arvin’s car as he drove you two to your special picnic spot. But alas, you were stuck with your cliché girl clique, dreaming of a weekend picnic. You had to remember to tell Arvin.
After your morning classes, you walked with one of the girls, Ivy, to your usual lunch spot when you noticed the other girls weren’t sitting down at your table like they normally would be. Instead you were horrified to see them all gathered around a table that was the usual lunch spot of a certain someone. You were stunned as Ivy dragged you towards them, listening as you heard them giggle and flirt with your boyfriend. There was no way they could have known, no way they found out about him so easily.
“I love that hat on you, Arvin.”
“Whatcha eating for lunch Arvin? How’s the taste?”
“Been working loads, Arvin? Doing some heavy lifting? I can tell.”
As you neared you noticed Betty sipping on what appeared to be a drive-in bag of gummy peach rings, eyeing you with a conniving look. That’s when it hit you. They must have seen you together at the drive in, they had to. One little mistake and now the wolves were after your love.
To your surprise, as you joined the crowd, the girls welcomed you with giggles.
“Lovely to see you y/n.”
“Is your lunch as good as your dinner from last night, y/n?”
“Come say hi to Arvin y/n! I’m sure you two know each other.”
You were red in the face, angry as you eyed Arvin who looked at you worriedly and glared at the girls.
“Ladies, I think we should give poor Arvin some space.” you suggested, hoping they’d take the hint and scram. Betty shook her head and placed her candy down on the lunch table.
“But we’ve only just started talking to him. I haven’t even gotten a chance to show him my new cut.”
She crossed a line as she bent down, her elbows squeezing her chest together to make her cleavage more obvious as she gave Arvin a seductive look. Arvin shifted in his seat, uncomfortably.
“So Arvin, how ya like my new hair? I just got it done this morning, missed first period. Go on, you can touch it if you’d like.”
You couldn’t believe it as your eyes watered, close to tears as you almost cried. But luckily, Arvin noted the lack of respect of boundaries as he stood and rolled his eyes. He made his way through the crowd of girls, scoffing as he reached for you and pulled you to him by your shoulder.
“Now, I’ve been tryna be nice and listen to y’all, but I can’t take another word. If this is how you react when you find out a girl that’s supposed to be your friend has a boyfriend, then I don’t want her to be friends with y’all no more. I’ve had it! Ya hear?!” The girls backed away, from you and Arvin as he moved his hand to grip your waist, a subtle message that he was here for you. They all nodded.
“Good. Now me an’ my girl are gonna go enjoy our lunch without all this nonsense. I don’t want to see any of y’all come near her again.” he started to walk off with you, the girls still shocked, but before you left, he turned back to one of the girls.
“And Betty, you best take care of that rat's nest on your head cuz it ain’t doing no one any favors.”
Betty looked appalled as you turned away from her and laughed with your lover, waiting until you were far enough away from the crowd to thank him at what was your new lunch spot.
You should never have doubted him, his loyalty to you. He’d never leave you for money, he’d never leave you for anything. Girls with centuries of financial stability had offered them up to him in your very presence and he never questioned being with you for a second. There was no hesitation as he rejected them. You were his soulmate, his forever partner, his best friend and all you could think as you stared at him is that you couldn’t have asked for a better one to call yours.
“Thanks baby. I think they needed that.” you expressed your gratitude, reaching for Arvin’s hand. He took yours in his and squeezed it briefly, sending his love for you through his touch. “Anything for my girl.”

ೃ࿐ Bambi Eyes ೃ༄
Lee Bodecker x Reader (pt 1)
Summary: Lee knows he’s a bad man. It only makes it easier doing bad things to make her his good girl. 18+ minors scurry off!!
Warnings: Dark Lee, Stalking, toxic relationships, age gap (reader 20, lee 40s), southern people (yes it’s a warning), mentions of death. Future smut: daddy kink, degradation kink, praise kink, spit kink
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lee knew he wasn’t a good man, but he had to pretend to be. Some knew of his dirty deeds, most didn’t but you…..it was as if you could see through his perfectly crafted image. As if those Bambi eyes saw into his guilty soul. Maybe you couldn’t see the bad man in him. Maybe he was just paranoid at the possibility of scaring you away. Either way though, Lee wanted you.
He wanted to hear your pretty laugh, he wanted your perfect baking, and he wanted to see you fall apart for him. You were always so sweet and graceful. Almost swanlike. But Lee desperately wanted to see your pretty eyes spill with tears of pleasure. Tears that he caused. See your cute mouth struggle to find words as he forces orgasm after orgasm out of your pretty body.
Lee knew pretty things like you didn’t last long in knockemstiff, women either raising babies, workin’ the street, or found dead. He wondered what you’d look like as his little housewife. You standing at the door with his meal ready and a baby in your belly, though something about your focus being on a child rubbed him the wrong way. No, Lee knew you were meant for more than the three types of women that this town allowed. No babies, no men ready to pay, and definitely not dead in an unsolved case file.
No, you were meant to be his. His to love, his to fuck, and his to spoil. Lee may not be a good man but you, one way or another, were gonna be his good girl.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
- “is there a reason you’re blushin’ like that?” Sandy had questioned in an attempt to draw you out of your dreamy haze. - “just hot is all San” you lied. No truth was you found yourself eyeing your coworker and friends older brother. Way older.
Lee often came into the dinner on Thursday, always an hour after closing, but today he was thirty minutes late. You’d felt disappointed thinking he wouldn’t come in tonight until you heard the little ding from the door and his heavy sigh. Immediately you felt relaxed, as if all worry had left as soon as those blue eyes connected with yours.
Yes you’d had a little crush on the older man for reasons you couldn’t understand. Aunt Gill said the law of this town was corrupt and had always wanted you to stay away from the politics surrounding it, always telling you of how those men payed good money and even killed just for a little taste of power. Why would anyone kill for any kinda position in this town? Though even with her warnings you couldn’t look away. What if he was an exception? He rarely ever smiled but he always spoke to you with more respect than any other man and he tipped well too.
You watched as he made his way to his usual spot, you already cutting a piece of his favorite cherry pie. - “ just take Lee his pie and head home, girly. Don’t want ya to be late for Arvin tomorrow” Sandy said with a wink.
Oh. Oh yeah, Arvin. You’d been so consumed with what could possibly have kept Lee busy that you’d completely forgotten about your plans with Arvin tomorrow. He was a sweet boy who’d shown interest in your for a while now and he was actually your age, so when he’d nervously asked you on a date, of course you said yes.
You brushed off your hands onto the apron around your waist as you made your way over to Lee as a nervous quirk.
- “ Evening’ Sheriff. I’m glad you could still make it tonight” you said with a little smile. Genuinely happy to see him.
God that angelic smile almost broke Lee right there. - “ Sorry angel, got held back with a case. Preacher was found shot dead.”
Lee didn’t often tell you the dark things he worked with. He didn’t want to hurt your little heart…but sometimes he found a sick joy in seeing your babydoll eyes widen with fear. Fear of the dark world surrounding you. Lee wouldn’t let that world hurt you, no he did everything in his power to keep that darkness out, with the exception of himself.
- “oh gosh, Sheriff. The pie ain’t good enough for you to come by after something as exhausting as that!”
The pie? Surely you didn’t think he came here every day for the pie you didn’t even make? - “what makes you think i come here for the pie, babydoll?” Lee smirked as he watched your face heat up at his tone.
- “I-I just figured….figured ya know cause Sandy m-makes the pie and ya know…” he watched you mumble as you played with the hem of your uniform. Cute he thought. So fucking cute.
- “no, sweetheart. Gotta make sure my sis is treating my best girl right, don’t i?”
Your swear you heart beat broke some kind of record at his comment. You weren’t sure what to say but you knew you wanted him to continue.
- “ Lee let the girl go home!” His sister shouted as she made her way around the counter. - “you’ve kept her long enough. Y/n, honey you head home now, alright?” Sandy said as she handed you your little bag, almost pushing you out the door.
- “o-oh of course. Good night San. Good night Sheriff!” You called as you made your way out but not without hearing him say a ‘goodnight babydoll’ back.
You found yourself thinking about his comment the whole walk home and even into the night.
His best girl.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
- “you stay away from that girl, Lee.” His sister hissed with a finger pointed in his direction. - “ she’s got a good life ahead of her and she doesn’t need your issues gettin’ In the way.”
- “my issues” he scoffed. “My issue is the fact that rumor says my sister is out there whorin’ around! I don’t need you fuckin’ up this election for me Sandy.” He said standing up obviously pissed at her mentioning you.
- “their just rumors lee…and of course you’d bring that up when we’re talking about you. You’ve been drinkin’ again haven’t you? That why you’re obsessed with this girl?” She pushed.
- “ M’not obsessed. She’s sweet and why can’t I be interested in her? I deserve a life outside of pickin’ up your messes, Sandy!”
Sandy loved her brother. But she knew. She knew of his control issues. She knew of his drives past your little house and that he only showed up to the diner on nights you worked.
- “Well it doesn’t matter what you think you deserve when it comes to her Lee. You know why? Cause shes got a date with that Russell boy tomorrow. So you stay away and let her live free from your bullshit” Sandy snarled as she poked his chest.
Lee saw red. Arvin Russel? She thought he was more fucked up than that kid? Hell he figured the man behind the murder of that shifty preacher was Arvin. Like hell he’d let his angel go on a date with that kid. Lee was sure that kid wouldn’t even know how to please you right. He wouldn’t treat you like a princess and definitely wouldn’t make you cum as hard as he could.
Lee knew his sister and Arvin were just obstacles in his way. They wouldn’t be able to stop him from making you his.
- “ go home lee. It’s way past closing and I’m tired” Sandy mumbled as she pulled at her face.
- “Fine…just keep whatever shit you’re doin’…just keep it down. This rumor is the last thing I need.” He said as he laid down her change.
Lee made his way out to his car, still seething at the thought of his girl going out with someone who wasn’t him. He’d make his usual stop by your house tonight, make sure his angel was okay and safe even if he was slightly frustrated with your stupid decision.
No this is my fault.
If he’d have just claimed you as his already than this wouldn’t have happened. But he needed things to be perfect. He needed to get past this election and get Sandy off his back. Then you’d be his. His to love, his to fuck, and his to spoil. You’d be his, and only his. You be his perfect good little girl.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
- “Darlin’ here please take my jacket” Arvin pleaded. You were shaking like a leaf and it was killing him. -“ you’ll get sick and I’ll no choice but to nurse you myself”
Arvin taking care of you didn’t sound too bad. He’d been nothing but a gentleman so far. You’d wanted something simple, so you both had decided on getting some shakes. Well…something simple just wasn’t enough as the two of you had ended up getting lost in conversation. He told you about his mother and father and you told him about your life in the city. - “I don’t think that stigma is true ya know? Of city girls bein’ hard to please. You’re truly the sweetest thing I’ve ever met y/n.”
Hard to please.
- “I think you’re a real sweetheart too, Arvin.” You’d said and meant it. You enjoyed your time with the boy but couldn’t shake off that he was hiding something. He had a harsh life, his father had exposed him to traumatic things early on and with his Sisters passing recently, you bet you’d be a bit standoffish too.
The stars had already made an appearance in the sky, signaling it was time for you to head home to Gill.
- “y/n I was thinkn’…..well I’m askn’ if I could kiss you?” Arvin mumbled as he played with your smaller hands.
Did you want him to kiss you? Did you have romantic feelings for Arvin? There couldn’t be much harm in kissing him, you decided. So without an answer you stood on the tips of your toes and kissed him. He tasted nice, like the birthday cake shake he’d had not long ago. He seemed stunned at first, but after a few seconds he started to kiss back. His hands slowly rubbed down your arms and you found yourself wanting more.
Though just as the pace picked up, Arvin stiffened.
- “Arvin, honey what’s wrong?” You pulled away, searching his eyes. He was looking behind you, hands tightly gripping your arms.
Confused as to what could possibly cause him to stop, you turned only to see what looked to be trees and an empty cop car. It frustrated you. Why was he being so odd?
- “well….uh..t-thank you for the evening, Arvin. I really enjoyed it.” You mumbled as you pulled away from him. Arvin still continued to stare, as if a ghost had stolen his attention, until it finally allowed him to place his eyes back on you.
- “good night y/n.” He muttered already turning back to head to his truck. Did he not enjoy the kiss? Had you done something wrong? His odd response had caused you to question yourself.
And he wasn’t even willing to drive you home.
You watched his back as he disappeared down the dark street. Willing the tears in your eyes to not make it down your face. Though you must’ve not tried hard enough.
- “asshole” you sobbed. You felt pathetic as you stood in the middle of your empty town. Gill was going to kill him when you explained to her why you came home with tears in your eyes and dirt staining your pretty white heals.
Be a big girl y/n.
You wiped the salty tears on the sleeve of his jacket that you still had on. The realization only made you cry harder. You didn’t even care that you were scuffing the shoes you’d saved up for, as you trudged your way home.
Lost in your pool of self loath, you’d yet to hear the car making its way past you as you neared the edge of the downtown street.
- “Sweetheart? Whatcha doin’ out here so late?“
Oh god.
The sound of his voice only caused you to burst into tears again. Of course your luck would have it were Lee Bodecker saw you as a crying mess right after you had your heart broken.
You’d heard the slam of his door but couldn’t see anything through your cloud of tears. Not until you felt his hands grab your face and gently do his best to rub them away. - “babydoll ima need you to tell me what happen- and who’s jacket is this? He cut himself off with his own question as he harshly pulled the jacket off your arms. You didn’t mind though, as the leather jacket rubbing against your skin only reminded you of the odd encounter you just had.
- “lee..please…” you mumbled as you looked up into his furious blue eyes - “ please just take me home…”
Lee knew he was selfish…but you’d asked him to take you home. You just didn’t know it would be your new home. You would forgive him eventually. He’d have to figure out a way to keep your disappearance quiet, maybe turn it on that fucking Russell kid, but he’d sort that out later.
For now all he needed to do was take his girl home…to her rightful home.

it had been a week of you living at the russell house after your parents decided to split up. lenora, your best friend had been kind enough to provide you with a roof over your head. emma was a very supportive lady and you needed that sort of environment to overcome the fact that your parents were going to legally part ways. sometimes she would hold you when you cried because the pain of seperation was nothing new to her. it reminded the old lady of the time her son went to war and she longed for any information of his whereabouts.
sometimes you cried at nights alone in bed while everyone was asleep. you stayed in under your blankets and pressed a hand over your mouth to muffle your own sobs.
on monday you finally went to school with lenora. after a whole week of missing school, your friends were happy to see you but gene dinwoodie and his gang were constantly teasing you about your parents’ situation.
you couldn’t face the humiliation as you rushed out of the school halfway. you walked the whole way back, sobbing and wiping the trail of tears that covered your face every once in a while.
you assumed no one would be home because emma mentioned that earskell would be driving her to the grocery store across town to get some stuff for her special meal on lenora’s upcoming birthday.
but you were proven wrong when you saw arvin standing on the porch next to his uncle’s rocking chair, smoking a cigarette.
he stood up straighter, putting out his cigarette as soon as he saw you.
you never really saw arvin around the house, just carrying groceries for emma and helping repair something around the house but you were almost sure you had spent more time in the house in a week that you stayed there than he did in eight years.
“what’s wrong?” he pointed to your tear stained cheeks and red eyes.
“nothing.” you replied, walking inside the house to avoid a conversation.
you thought he wouldn’t care any further but he followed you inside, “kids at school bothering you?”
“it doesn’t matter really.” you said, placing the books you were carrying on the dining table. you saw arvin disappear into the kitchen and felt bad about talking to him rudely. he was just being nice.
you were about to follow him into the kitchen but he came back with a glass of water. you took it from his hands, flashing him a little smile, and took a sip of water.
“if you want i can beat ‘em up for you.” he shrugged so casually it made you laugh.
after that day arvin and you became friends too and you noticed a lot more of him in the house. you noticed him helping lenora and you with homework, being in kitchen– even if he didn’t work much– with the three of you, eating at the table with everyone. you also noticed his room was right next to the one you were staying in.
after almost three weeks of living with the russell’s, you found a letter in the mailbox addressed to you. it was your mom’s. it was quite early in the morning, you hadn’t gone to school with lenora and you were sure no one was home so you carried the letter to your room, got under your covers and tore it open, reading it.
she had apologised for their constant bickering in that letter and asked you to stay with her once the divorce was settled. you sniffled, placing the letter at your bedside table.
the sudden knock at your door caught you off guard. arvin’s cap was the first thing you noticed as he entered the room partially, “everything okay?” he asked, voice deeper than his usual pitch. you probably woke him up.
“y-yeah, everything is fine.” you wiped your face with your sleeves.
“we got thin walls.” he said, entering the room fully now, “is everything okay?”
you nod your head, “mama sent me a letter, calling me back.”
“you don’t want that?” he rubbed his eyes, walking closer and sitting at the edge of your bed, close to your feet.
“what?”
“to leave here?”
you weren’t sure how to answer that. you wanted to go stay with your mother but something was holding you back too. you wondered if it was emma’s sweet nature, or getting to stay with lenora, or if it was arvin. the possibility made your heard flutter.
instead of saying any of that, you just chose to go with, “it won’t be the same without him there. my daddy.”
arvin placed a hand over yours, which was nervously fidgeting in your lap. he held it and looked into your eyes, “it’s gonna be alright.”
those words felt like everything you needed to hear. you nodded, giving him a smile. the two of you sat there in solitude until arvin’s words cut through the silence, “can i sleep with you?”
you could feel the drowsiness in his voice. instead of wording an answer, you simply lifted your blanket, inviting him to lay with you.
you two laid down, arvin hesitantly placing an arm around your waist. you shuffled closer to him, wrapping your arm around his shoulder until his head chin was resting over your head and your face was nestled into his chest.
you were enveloped in arvin, “oh, you’re so warm, don’t even let go of me.” the brunette mumbled, reading your thoughts. his eyes were closed and expressions the definition of calm when you looked up to read his face.
maybe arvin russell was the only reason you wanted to stay.

Arvin watched as you paced down the driveway towards his car, it was obvious already that you were exhausted. You were slouched over, your hair, which had been down when he dropped you off, was now tied in a messy ponytail. Arvin leaned over to open the door for you as you approached the car.
“Hey sunshine,” he smiled, “Why the sour face?”
You shot him the dirtiest look he’d ever seen as you climbed into the passenger seat, “We are never, ever having kids.”
He laughed, “That bad?”
You nodded, “You have no idea. They were acting crazy all day, Jonathan started screaming if I put him down for even a second, and I couldn’t get Henry to sit down for anything. I mean even during lunch he kept getting up and running around.”
“I’m sorry darlin’,” he frowned and kissed the back of your hand, “Why don’t we skip the river today? We can just head back to mine or yours so you can rest for a while.”
“No, no, I still wanna go,” you insisted, “I’m sure you already packed food up and everything…”
“I did, but we still don’t have to go.”
“I want to, I’m sure I’ll feel better after I eat and sit down for a while,” you scooted into the middle seat of his truck and kissed his cheek.
“Alright,” he grinned, “But let me know if you change your mind.”
“Yay,” you cheered, snuggling into his side as he pulled onto the road.
Arvin set his hand on your leg but almost instantly retracted it, his face contorting to disgust, “Why are you sticky?”
“Oh god,” you groaned and looked down at your legs, they looked fine but when you touched them they were sticky, “I let the boys have some popsicles, I thought I got it all off of me,” you cringed as you poked your leg, “That’s disgusting.”
Arvin started to laugh, “Don’t worry, you can rinse off in the river.”
You sighed and leaned back against the car seat, “You better have packed some good food.”
“Don’t worry, I made us some sandwiches, and I went to that bakery downtown and got some of those little cakes you like,” he reached over for you again, running the back of his fingers down your cheek, “You could close your eyes for a minute pretty girl.”
“I’m okay,” you assured, turning lazily towards him, “You’re the best boyfriend in the world, you know that?”
“I try my best,” he lifted his arm, giving you room to snuggle up underneath it, “Now come here, sticky or not, I like having you close.”
“Aw,” you cooed as he wrapped his arm around you.
You turned your attention to the road ahead of you. The town started to fade away, being replaced with dense trees and only the occasional home as you krept closer and closer to the river. Arvin was driving out further than he usually he did, wanting to make sure that you two wouldn’t run into anyone while you were out. It was a special day, he wanted to keep it just the two of you.
“Here we are,” he grinned as he pulled into a small dirt parking lot. A large sign advertised some kind of hiking trail, “Looks like it’s just us.”
“Yay,” you grinned.
Arvin passed you the picnic blanket as he climbed out of the car. He took the basket of food and your hand and led you down a thin dirt trail. It was hot, and you were tired, but Arvin promised you it wasn’t a far walk. He half jokingly offered you a piggyback ride, but you had a little too much pride to accept it.
“Here we are,” he grinned as you two stumbled into a small alcove.
The river bank was all rock and grass, it was much more serene than the dirt banks closer to your home. You spread the blanket out on the grass and happily fell down on top of it. You kicked off your shoes and spread your arms out over the blanket. Arvin laughed and set the basket down beside you. You watched with a smile as he lifted his shirt over his head, leaving him in just his swim trunks.
“I would whistle if I wasn’t so tired,” you grinned up at him.
He smiled and tossed his shirt at your face, “There, you can have a souvenir.”
You rolled your eyes and pushed his shirt off you, “Come on, I already have a million of those.”
“Cause you’re a thief,” he pinched your chin and opened up the basket, “You still hungry sweetheart?”
“I’m starved,” you rubbed your grumbling stomach with a smile, “Sandwiches right?”
He nodded and set a paper plate in your lap, “Yeah, I put a lot of hard work into them so you better enjoy.”
Your eyes widened excitedly as he presented the sandwich to you, “Don’t worry, I plan on it.”
The sandwich tasted divine after the long day you’d had. You were eternally grateful that you had a boyfriend who didn’t mind sitting quietly while you ate. Arvin was always happy just to be near you, and he didn’t mind at all if you wanted to sit in silence after a long day. He would just sit beside you and peck at his food, watching you watch the river.
“This is nice,” you hummed, “The river’s beautiful.”
“You’re beautiful,” Arvin pecked your cheek.
You flushed and turned to him, “You don’t have to be so sweet all the time Arvin.”
“Well sure I do, it’s what you deserve,” he nuzzled his nose against your cheek, “How’s the sandwich?”
“Amazing,” you groaned before shoving the last bite into your mouth.
“Save room for dessert,” he laughed, “You really were starving huh?”
You nodded, “You have no idea, I had no time to eat while I was chasing the kids, I thought I was about to wither away.”
“My poor girl,” he flashed a pout, “You know when we have kids I’m sure they’ll be much sweeter to you than the boys are. They’ll save all the screaming and running around for me.”
“The boys are sweet Arvin, they’re just kids,” you cracked a small smile, “And I’m sure our kids will terrorize us equally.”
“Well probably, but I was trying to make you feel better,” he chuckled and peeked into the basket beside him, “You want your cake now sweetheart?”
You hummed and nodded, “Yeah, I think I do.”
“Great, just one thing first,” his cheeks dusted pink, “I know you said you didn’t want to do gifts but I couldn’t help myself…”
“Arvin,” you scolded.
“Yeah, yeah, I know,” he waved his hand at you and reached into the basket, pulling out a small black, velvet box, “It’s small, don’t worry.”
You tried to fight your smile as he placed the box in your lap, “Now I feel bad, I should have got you something.”
“I don’t need anything sweetheart, I just like seeing you happy,” he kissed your cheek, “Go ahead and open it.”
“I am, have some patience,” you giggled and pulled the box open.
Inside was a simple silver chain with a small heart charm hanging off of it. The charm had been delicately carved with both of your initials. It was absolutely gorgeous, your mouth fell open in disbelief.
“You like it?” he questioned.
You quickly nodded, “I love it Arvin, this is so beautiful.”
He let out a relieved breath, “Thank goodness. You have no clue how nervous I was.”
“I love it,” you repeated, pulling him in for a quick kiss, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” he set both his hands over yours, “Can I help you put it on?”
“Yes, please,” you nodded eagerly.
Arvin crawled behind you and swept your hair to the side. He took the necklace from the box and wrapped it around your neck. He carefully clasped it behind you and pressed his lips to your neck.
“There,” he pulled away with a content hum, “I think it looks pretty, silver looks good on you.”
You nodded in agreement, “It’s perfect.”
“I’m glad you like it,” he ran his hand over your collar with a smile, “Happy anniversary sweetheart.”
“Happy anniversary,” you cooed back and wrapped your arms around his neck, “Have I ever told you how handsome you are?”
“A few times,” he nuzzled his nose against your cheek and started trailing kisses up your jaw, “How about we head in the water? It’s hot out here.”
“You can head in, I think I’m gonna lay down for a minute,” you patted his chest and flattened out the blanket, “Just a minute though, don’t let me fall asleep.”
“Why are you laying down if you don’t wanna fall asleep?” he laughed.
“I just wanna rest a minute,” you laid your head in his lap, “You can get in if you want.”
“No, no, I’ll stay here,” he ran his hand through your hair, “You rest.”
Your eyes fell heavy as you watched the river in front of you. The soothing sound of the water and Arvin’s hand in your hair were urging you to sleep, but you were determined to stay awake. You wanted to enjoy the river and actually get in the water for a while, you could sleep later, when you were curled up in bed with your boyfriend.
“You still wanna stay awake pretty girl?” Arvin cooed, noticing you starting to drift off in his lap.
“Yeah,” you mumbled, “I’m gonna get up and we’re gonna go swim.”
He smiled to himself, “Why don’t you get up then?”
“I will, I will,” you promised, “It’s only been a minute.”
“No,” he peaked at his watch, “It’s been almost an hour.”
You looked up at him, “No it hasn’t.”
“Yes, it has,” he chuckled, “You keep drifting off and waking up. You know we can always go home if you’re that tired, the river will still be here tomorrow.”
“I want to swim,” you insisted, slowly pushing yourself off his lap, “I gotta get my dress off.”
Arvin’s lips tugged to a smirked as you attempted to reach back and unzip your dress, “Let me help,” he gently tugged your zipper down to free you from the dress, “There you go.”
“Thank you,” you pulled the dress up and over your head and folded it up in your lap.
Arvin stood, taking just a moment to admire you in your swimsuit, “You coming?”
You yawned and nodded, “Yeah, just a sec.”
“I told you, we can always go home,” he offered again.
“I’m coming,” you tried to push yourself up, only for you to fall back down. Your left leg, which you’d been laying on top of, was totally numb, “Ouch,” you grunted as you fell back down.
Arvin started laughing, “Forget how to stand sweetheart?”
“No,” you groaned, “Help me, my leg is asleep,” you extended your arms towards him, expecting him to help you stand back up.
“Poor girl,” he clicked his tongue and bent down in front of you, “Let me help.”
He hoisted you into the air suddenly, pulling you in close to his chest as he stood. You squealed and clung to his neck, “Arvin put me down!” you demanded through a fit of giggles.
“You asked for help, I’m helping,” he laughed in response as he approached the water.
“You know that’s not what I meant,” you continued giggling as he entered the water.
“The water feels nice,” he dipped you down so your feet grazed the water.
You shivered at the sensation and stretched to try and dip your legs the rest of the way in, “Come on, let me get in.”
“Oh you mean put you down?” Arvin cocked his head, pretending not to know what you wanted as he waded deeper.
“Yes dork, so I can swim.”
“Ah,” he hummed, “I could do that, but I sort of like having you close,” he kissed your cheek, “You know you might be able to convince me to let you go though.”
“And how would I do that?” you smiled as he pulled you into the water with him, “A kiss maybe?”
“A kiss might do it,” he nodded.
“Okay,” you cupped his face in your hands, running your thumbs over his cheeks before you pressed his lips to his.
He smiled into the kiss, gently squeezing your body against his. His grip on you loosened and he let you slip out of his arms. Slowly you pulled away, looking up at him with a big smile. He pressed a kiss to the tip of your nose, then to your forehead.
“You know you’re too cute for your own good sunshine,” he purred.
“Well you’re too handsome for your own good,” you hummed in response.
“As long as I’m handsome enough for you to stick around that’s all I care about,” he ran his thumb over your bottom lip, “You better start swimming if that’s what you wanna do sweetheart, otherwise I’m gonna start kissing you again.”
“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” you took his hand and leaned back into the water, “I think we’ve got time for both.”

Your walking through the hallways after school to get to your locker, Arvin Russel normally picks you and his sister, Lenora up but running late because of work.
As you collect your books into your bag, it seems strange because usually Lenora comes running at you beaming with some particular interest of hers.
Maybe she had to go to the bathroom? Or left something in a classroom? That girl is awfully forgetful with her belongings you thought giggling.
Meanwhile, Lenora had some trouble on her hands as usual (a group of no good sons of Bitches as Arvin likes to call them) decided that it was a great idea to bully an innocent girl.
Lenora is sweet and kind, humble at what she has got. You don’t need no big, fancy things when you got a lot of love in the house. Unfortunately, people normally stay away from her because apparently rumour has it, she is a curse.
That is a far from the truth that is why, when you came to town you immediately, friends with the sweet girl! Thinking so much of her, being best friends is great. Especially when you help each other out and talk all day.
“Oh, look who it is boys,” Tommy Matson smirked, he stood from leaning to walking over to Lenora, “Hey, pretty girl,” he teased.
“Disgusting, don’t call me that from your vile mouth,” Lenora whispers the last part, too shy to stand up to her bullies.
“Walking away, are we?” Tommy whistles, “You know you would be pretty, if you weren’t such a freak!” He slams his hand against a garbage can, making Lenora scared she tryed to run off but it was no use.
“Get off me,” Lenora screeched, kicking her legs at the boy, “What is your momma going to say?”
Tommy, still holding her wrist, “hurts, let go!” Lenora whimpers at his strong grip.
“My momma ain’t gonna say shit, I don’t need to answer to you!” Tommy scowled, pulling her closer to his face to hush in her face, “hush now because Your a freak,”
“Properly made a pack with the devil,” Another boy joked, all his “friends” laughing along.
Just as things could be more abusive, you come rushing out the doors. You was looking around where Lenora could of been because your worried at how you haven’t seen her yet.
You gasped, as you open the large, brown doors to see stupid Tommy bullying her with other boys.
“Hey, get off her! You no good son of a bitch,” You storm your way over, Tommy didn’t even have a chance to speak before you grabbed his wrist from Lenora’s, “You don’t touch her, You should know better with that dumb brain of yours!”
“Y/N, another pretty girl! Why hang around with that freak if you can have all this,” Tommy explained trying to flirt, smirking.
you ignored him scoffing, kicking his knee. He dropped on the floor as he cried out.
“You slut, you will pay for this,” He shouted, pointing at you.
Paying your attention to the frighten Lenora, poor girl you step closer to her. “Come, let’s get out of here before they try something worse.” You whisper, as Tommy is dumbfounded by his so called “friends” laughing at him.
You and Lenora try to make a run for it without them noticing it but luck isn’t on your side today.
“You got your ass kicked by a girl,” Billy laughed, Chucky coming up behind him slapping Tommy’s back, “Yh, you definitely did! It was hilarious,”
“Hey, they’re trying to run away!” Billy told, “Well, what are you waiting for! Get them, you Idiots,” Tommy, grumbled out very loudly getting up as quick as he can.
“Lenora, it’s going to be ok! Let’s just keep running,” You tried to comfort her, she had a few tears in her eyes, until you feel a boy grab your wrist pushing you on the floor.
“Thinking you can get away from me, S/N,” Tommy tutted, Lenora wrists were grabbed by Billy and Chuck, “Yh we got you now!”
You quickly, stood up Tommy grabbed your waist squeezing it. Most likely leaving a mark of his attack, “Let go, or else!” You threatened hissing at him and the pain, looking pasted his head to see Lenora being pushed around by the other two boys.
You had to help Lenora so you had to be strong, plan this out carefully. “What is a weak girl like you? Going to do to me, HUH?” he chuckled, throwing you back to the floor. You hissed at your side, probably going to leave another bruise.
“A lot more than you think, you bitch!” You grunted, Tommy was going to make his way over to Lenora. You hopped on your feet again, running right into Him and pushing him really hard on the floor.
You grabbed Billy yanking him on the floor too, with a big crash sound of dirt. “Ow, you Bitch,”
Chuck being a pussy, running off in the other direction just before you had time to yank him on the floor. You may be in pain but you had to help Lenora out, first!
“Oh, My! Are you ok,” You help Lenora up, her knee was a bit bruised, “Yh, I’m fine thanks,”
“Oh, for fuck sake!” You see Tommy standing up, “Lenora you need to run, right now! I don’t care about me, I’ll handle him but RUN!” You look her in the eye, deadly serious.
Luckily, Billy is still on the ground yelping. Lenora nodded and ran, seeing Arvin’s car just about to pull up.
You quickly, grabbed Tommy’s fist that he was about to punch you with. You kick him in the stomach, taking off your bag and swinging it so that as it hits him he falls down, you fell down too hitting your knee.
“Son of a bitch,” you mumble.
seeing Tommy hovering over on the floor, you grab your bag and make a run for it with your bleeding knee. You couldn’t really see it because of your tights but you could definitely feel the blood trickling down.
Running for her dear life to her brother’s car, Arvin let out smoke from his mouth. Having Scolding hot, mean face on him as he sees Lenora running and You right behind her.
“Fuck,” Arvin let go as Lenora opened the back door, breathing heavily, “Are you ok, what happened!” He questioned just as you got in with her too.
“Never mind that just drive, Arvin,” You breathed out, looking at Tommy still on the floor but mostly going to move any moment.
Arvin actually listened Stepping on the Gas, “I bet it’s those no good sons of bitches isn’t it?” He scowled as he drags his cigarette out.
“Lenora,” You whisper, “it’s ok, they are gone!” You comforted her as she leans into you for a hug, “Yh, but we are fine! I hope,” you talking to Arvin pausing to think, “They we’re bullying Lenora. I stepped in to help her,”
“Yh, without Y/N I properly be beaten up,” Lenora whimpers out of fear, “Thank you,” she whispers, with tears in her eyes again giving you a small smile.
“It’s ok, no need to say thank you! Lenora, I’m your best friend, friends are there to protect friends!” You smile at her, she giggles, “Yh your the best!”
“Hush, I’m not that great! Your better,” You wink teasing her, lightening up the mood.
“Tch, those no good Hillbilly’s I’ll get the lot of them! They think it’s alright to bully people, especially women!” Arvin muttered, mostly to himself gripping the wheel tighter but you heard it giving him a sweet, toothy smile.
Arvin Russel the boy who was they call a devil, apparently cursed too! He acted tough but actually he had a sweet spot for you and his sister. That is all he ever want in life, to protect you and her.
“I appreciate you looking out for Lenora, Y/N,” Arvin actually gives you a smile, it was sweet never seen before to you until today. He admired you from a far, since the first time you protected his sister, he admires you more always.
“It was no, big deal Arvin,” You shyly said, putting your hair behind your ear, he nodded adjusting his cap.
“Why are you shy now! Mm,” Lenora shifted her shoulders towards you as she teases, “You had no trouble speaking clearly to those bullies, unless…”
You squinted your eyes at her, luckily Arvin isn’t taking any notice of her attics towards you.
“Lenora, no,” You hissed at her to cover up the pain you was in because you couldn’t say you were in pain.
“Well, I’m just telling! I can see it,” Lenora takes her hand, pointing to Arvin. You take her hand down and slapped your forehead, “Are you gonna stop, if I admit it?” You questioned, giggling.
Your side really hurts but you can’t let them know because that’s embarrassing. The bully threw you a bit too hard on the floor as you hoped.
“Maybe,” Lenora smirked, waving as she wiggles her fingers, “Oh, my right well change of subject! Are you hurt anywhere?”
Arvin pulled up at their drive way, going take you home after dropping off Lenora is the usual plan after school.
“My side hurts a bit,” You nodded, “Oh, I remember I packed cool patches,” you give a couple of Lenora, “Here, for your side,” You smile.
“Thanks, wouldn’t know what I do without you,” Lenora smiled back, “Are you hurt too?” She worried about you too? You thought, how sweet! “No, no, it’s fine I’m not,” You smile hiding the pain, you could just clean yourself up after you get home anyway.
“I’m honestly ok, now you rested up poppet over the weekend,” You lie as you smile, hugging her a good bye as she waved getting out the car, “bye,” Lenora waved at Arvin too, one last time going into her house.
It’s easier if people don’t know your in the pain, you had to learn that the hard way in the past few years of living in the other town.
You breathed out slowly as you feel slightly dizzy, nothing much out of the ordinary you suppose.
You wonder why Arvin hasn’t started the car back up as you open your eyes you see Arvin right next to you on the back seat.
He is looking at you, there is something in his eyes.. worry? Maybe, I doubt it you thought.
“Hey, Are you ok? Darlin’,” Arvin softly asked, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you love,”
How did you not hear the door going? On the car as he left the front to the back. You must of been so hazy, only focusing on Arvin now.
You take a deep breath “I’m ok,” you shakily whispered, gulping as your heart beat going faster of how Arvin is so close to you.
Your lips could actually meet!
“No, please don’t lie, sweetheart,” Arvin shook is head, taking your soft hand into his slightly rough yet soft one making your breath hitch at the sudden contact, “A pretty girl like you shouldn’t have to hide their true feelings and I can tell you got hurt, Darlin’,”
You sigh looking up into Arvin’s chocolate, warm brown eyes they were normally, cold full of dark tones of brown.
“Your eyes are gorgeous,” You stutter, blinking tilting your head.
“Not as gorgeous as yours, Pretty girl!” He winks, Pretty girl came much better from his perfect, soft lips.
“May I,” Arvin asked suggesting to touch you, “yes,” you nodded, almost forgetting the pain.
Arvin brushes your hair behind your ear, cupping your jaw gently into his hand as he brings your face closer to his.
“You need help, I’m going to help you! Not only you protected my sister, your strong and beautiful girl, who I want to get to know because I already…” He cuts himself off, looking the other way as he ruffles his hair stilling holding your jaw gently.
You reached out your hand cupping his jaw gentle, making him look into you this time. Bringing him closer, you heard his breath hitch just like yours a moment ago.
“Arvin, you already what?” You whisper, giving a curious look to him, you lick your lips, “Fine, I will let you help me but what is it your going to say?” You gave him a real, genuine smile this time.
“I, I love you, Y/N,” Arvin smiled, “Please let me help you,” You can’t believe what your hearing, the boy that you been crushing on since you moved in town just confessed his feelings.
You are quite starstruck completely forgetting about your bruise sides or your bleeding knee. Never the less, you pull him into a sweet kiss to answer his question.
“I love you too, Arvin,” You look into his eyes again, smiling. He kisses you with his soft, delicious lips again drifting off into the clouds.
“I think we should go into the house and clean you up, Darlin’,” He whispers through kisses, you nod.
Arvin gets out of his car, opening your door and carefully standing you up. You wince at your side because of the bruises, they are quite fresh.
“It’s ok, love,” Arvin, steadies you as you stumble upon on your feet as you walk, “I got you, I got you,”
“Do you want me to lift you up? Sweetheart,” Arvin suggests, you shook your head, “I’m too heavy,” you mumble,
“No, your not love! Who put that stupid, crap into your head,” Arvin scoffed, “You are perfect, now please let me pick you up because you can hardly walk,”
You nod agreeing, Arvin wraps his arms around your waist to lift you up as you put your legs around him too.
“See not heavy,” He smiles, kissing your forehead.
You bury your head into the crook of his neck, smelling his delicious scent. Even if he has a hint of smokes on him, he still smells like vanilla and pine wood.
Luckily, Lenora is in her room and Arvin’s grandmother is in the kitchen too busy repairing dinner to hear the door going.
Arvin went upstairs with you, very quietly to make sure no one notice to keep things at least now private between you. He pop you down on his bed, “This is more comfortable than my bed,” you giggle, Arvin put your bag down near his draws.
“Oh is it?” Arvin nodded, “Im going to get the band aid kit for you love,” you nodded as he went. You sink down more into his bed, loving how soft it is, still your knee is bleeding but at least your getting a handsome guy to fix it.
Those pet names that Arvin gives you sends butterflies right down your stomach! Making you day dream to the clouds again, you look around his room. It’s actually pretty cosy, nice room to be in.
“Can you sit up, Darlin?” Arvin asked, closing the door, you nodded propping yourself up. You realised that you had tights on, “Can I take them off? To get to your knee, I can see it’s been bleeding under the material,” you loved how he explained himself, acting tough but in reality being shy around you.
“Yes, Arvin!” You smiled as he slides them off showing your bare legs, “This may sting love, you can squeeze my hand if it gets too much,” you take his other hand.
Your shirt rises a little bit, Just enough for Arvin to see your side bruises.
“Those god Damn Hillbilly’s are gonna be 12ft underground,” Arvin mumbles under his breath as he goes through the first aid box.
“Ouch,” you hiss, “Your doing so well, Darling” Arvin praised as he wipes your Graze with the aesthetic wipe.
Arvin places a plaster on your knee after he kisses it, “Do you feel better?” He asked, “Wait, you need a cooler pack for your bruises,” he remembered going back through the first aid box.
“Your too sweet,” You gasped at the coldness, “It’s cold,” You giggle, holding Arvin’s hand a bit tighter.
“Only sweet for you sweetheart,” Arvin winked at you, “I have something to ask you,”
“ok, shoot,” You smile, rubbing his hand looking into his eyes.
“Will you officially be my girl,” Arvin scratches the back of his neck, shyly as he asked you.
“Of course Arvin,” Arvin pulled you into a passionate kiss before you could say anything else, “Like sugar aren’t you!” You Smiled.
Arvin licks his lips, “Mm, not as much as you, Doll,” he stands up laying down on the bed with you.
“Thank you for cleaning me up,” You snuggle into him more as he wraps his arms around you, “Anytime, My love,” Arvin kisses your cheek, stroking your head.
“Sleep beautiful,” You hear him whisper into your ear as you drift off, too tired to keep your eyes open any longer.
Arvin pulls the covers over you, kissing you on the forehead just before he drifts off with you.

Ain’t So Hard
Tumblr media
Summary: You aren’t one for driving, your best friend Arvin decides to take lessons into his own hands.
Pairing: Arvin Russell x Reader
Warnings: None? There’s usually a little language but I don’t believe there’s any in here 😲 this is very much fluff
Authors Note: Until I can figure out why my laptop won’t update since that’s what I prefer to write on, I’ll just be posting this little imagine I wrote ❤️
  Driving had never been your strong suit, it freaked you out. You couldn’t help the way your hands shook, and your head spun each time you sat behind the wheel. It’s a lot of pressure, to hurl a giant metal object at high speeds and hope for the best. Though not everyone thought of it that way. Your childhood best friend was quite the opposite, Arvin loved to drive, especially when you rode with him. You aren’t his sweetheart or nothin’, but you are at the time. Everybody and their momma knew that, and it was odd to see one of you going around town without the other.
  Arvin always loved watching you smile while climbing into his old clunker of a truck. The way you’d point at random things with joy like you didn’t see them yesterday, perks of a small town he’d suppose. When the day came that you didn’t carry the same shine when going for a drive like you usually did, Arvin decided to take a detour to try and ease your mind. “What’s wrong darlin’?” He slowed the truck down to look over at you, a cool summers breeze finding its way through the open windows. His heart sank watching you shrug “I-I’m just a bit embarrassed...That I don’t know how to drive. It makes me feel childish.” you sighed running a finger along the dust gathered on the dash.
  The fact that you didn’t drive hadn’t ever come to Arvin’s mind. “No, that don’t make you childish y/n.” He furrowed his brow turning his body towards you, stopping the truck after pulling into a field clearing. “You swear it?” Your hand placed itself gently on Arvin’s shoulder causing a light tinge to spread across his pale cheeks. “I do, I do.” He chuckled picking up your hand to place a kiss to your knuckles making you swoon. “You wanna drive?” He grinned quirking a brow at your shocked expression. “Arvin- I no! Are you crazy? You wanna die? I’ll crash your truck so fast I-I mean-” “I was just foolin’ with ya y/n... but you could give it a try?” it was Arvin’s turn to shrug a little.
  “I tell you what, I’ll stay right here, you can sit in my lap. I’ll control the pedals and all you gotta do is steer.” He peddled his feet and moved the wheel around for emphasis making you giggle. “I guess trying wouldn’t hurt? Unless we crash like I said.” You teased sliding across the bench seat into Arvins lap. “Well, we’ll get to that when it happens but out of anybody who could wreck my truck and get away with it, it’d be you.” He joked back making you swat his arm. “Thanks for the encouragement, Russell.” “Oh, anytime sweetheart.” He winked while cranking the truck back up. Immediately your body stiffened, and your heavy breathing became apparent to Arvin.
  Letting one of his arms wrap around your middle he placed his chin gently on your shoulder. “Hey.” He hummed looking up at you. “I-I’m scared.” You whimpered gripping the steering wheel tight. “I know, it’s alright. I’m right here and I ain’t gonna let nothin’ happen to ya Darlin’ we’ll go slow.” Arvin reassured you, glad to feel you lighten up and take a deep breath. “M’ready.” You smiled nervously, but Arvin nodded with confidence for you and pressed down on the gas a little while you steered. You were driving. You smiled widely taking a moment to look at Arvin “I’m doing it! We’re moving!” You laughed trying not to jerk the steering wheel too much. “I told you! It ain’t so hard.” Arvin smiled back loving every second of your excitement.
  As the two of you drove around the empty field a little faster, joking back and forth, Arvin decided that everybody was right. You’re his sweetheart. Watching the wind whip through your hair every now and then, listening to you laugh or squeak when you messed up a little, or the subtle way you held his eyes in a prideful gaze, though his held pride and a little bit of something else. Arvin let go of the gas and let the truck come to a stop making you turn and give your friend a concerned look. “What happened? Did we run outta gas? Oh my goodness what a walk home that’ll b-” Your rant had been interrupted by a chapped set of lips pressing into your much softer ones. Arvin’s eyes slid shut while yours blew wide, but you aren’t insane, so you kiss back.
 The air between the two of you remained sweet as you separated. “I like you.” Arvin grinned. “I like you too.” You said matter o’ factly. “Alright...how bout’ I love you.” He tested leaning his head against the headrest “I love you too” you rolled your eyes smiling. There was a comfortable silence as you just sat with one another for a bit. “I guess I ought to get you home before dark.” Arvin grumbled cranking the truck back up making you look at him socked. “We ain’t outta gas?” You said wholeheartedly. “Oh my- bless your heart y/n. You’ll get there one day darlin’.” He teased making you fake pout, only giving in as he kissed your neck, driving you home.
My first Arvie boy story! I think it’s super cute, I hope y’all agree! Thank you so much for reading loves <3 -Snax

Yandere Arvin Russell (1/5)

*Edited
*Dedicated to @lovehoneypotto.
I grinned expectantly as I threw open the church doors with two jars tucked under my arm. All attention landed on me as I interrupted the congregation - including the glowering eyes of my mother. The priest, who was new, young, and recently graduated from… Bible college, halted his preach. My mother publicly apologized, rising to her feet, but it was too late.
I opened the jars and released the hoard of butterflies and mother into the church. Some elderly women let out screeches, the young children rose from their seat and began chasing them joyously, and some adults just laughed. The members were generally used to my harmless antics; I presumed that some old timers were so used to it that it wasn’t a normal Sunday without a prank of some sort.
A laugh bubbled in my throat as a lovely Easter Tiger Swallowtail, with its black on yellow stripes, landed on my lower arm. I raised it to me. My mother was still attempting to reach me amidst the chaos. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a handsome church boy staring at me.
“Friends,” the priest suddenly boomed, "this young child has given us a gift from the Lord. The Lord gave us nature, and this young, brilliant child has brought one of nature’s gifts to the Lord’s doorstep. Calm yourselves, and let us pray!”
I met the priest’s eyes. How surprising. The old priest always lost his temper and berated me. Embarrassed me. However… the priest would learn. It was his first time around. He was just trying to cover up for his embarrassment.
I finally stirred so that I could set the jars on an empty bench. The butterfly departed, joining the rest of the flock. A small child came up and grabbed my skirt. I smiled and patted his head.
“Y/n, Y/n! How did you catch them?”
I crouched down to his height amidst the depleting chaos. “Well, you just sit really, rally still around flowers and they land on you. Then you put them in the jar.”
“Can you give me one —"
His mother suddenly yanked him back. “Young lady! Is it not enough for you to disrupt the congregation every Sunday? How dare you speak to my son —“
I was suddenly grabbed by the collar of my shirt. I let out a yelp of pain, coming face to face with my mother. Her face was beet red. “You told me you got a job. You told me that, for once, you were making yourself useful! How f - how dare you disrupt the Lord’s house! Ten - no, twenty lashes are in store!”
The priest pushed his way through the crowd. “Friend," he spoke smoothly. “Are the butterflies not beautiful?”
Tears stung the creases of my eyes. But I didn’t want to let her see me cry. My mother suddenly collapsed on her hands and knees She clasped her hands together and began praying furiously. “Dear Lord, please forgive my heinous child. She knows not what she’s done. Please, hear my prayers, and release her from the devil that holds her captive —“
The priest crouched down as well, praying. I could barely hear him over my crying mother. I took a few steps away. “My Lord, thank you for sending this child with gifts from heaven. Please, bless her and her mother with all of earth’s riches —“
I began to sneer. I couldn’t take it anymore. These snide assholes and their god would not listen, and I had no devil within me. I grabbed my jars and was about to make my exit. I peered over my shoulder one last time.
That handsome church boy was still looking at me.
I sent him a smirk.
~~~
“It… it’s you.”
I raised my head from my spot in the parking lot. I was surprised, when, instead of those ruthless bullies, it was the handsome church boy. He looked nervous. He was wearing his crush on his sleeves.
I took in his figure. He had large arms and callous hands, indicating that he was a working man. His face was pleasant to look at. It was full of youth and demure, with prominent dimples and curly brown hair. He had brilliant blue eyes and his Southern accent was thick.
“Why, hello there, handsome,” I giggled. “Finally worked up the courage to talk to me, huh? I’ve seen you around. We have history together, you know.”
His cheeks reddened and his foot shuffled, digging into the plot of grass. I was leaning against the lamp post while sitting in the thin strip of grass that separated the parking lot and the front of the school. “I… I noticed. A while ago, actually.”
I sent him a grin and patted the grass in front of him for him to sit. “Spare me a moment of your time, handsome. You must have some if you’re talkin’ to little ol’ me. Does that face of your’s have a name?”
I loved the affect I had on him. Many a time I’ve had confused, shy schoolboys who convinced themselves a girl like me was either worth fixing or worth pursuing. But… this one was worth my time. He was handsome,, after all. I’d certainly noticed him before and how he stared at me in class.
“I’m Arvin. Arvin Russell. Your ma and my grandma and sister go to church together,” he introduced, jutting his hand out.
I took it slyly, firmly shaking. “Pleasure to meet ya, Arvin Russell. You’re funny. Don’t you also go to church with your grandma and sister?”
His cheeks flushed further. “Well, uh, I mean, yes, ma’am. But I don’t really want to. Especially with that new priest. I’m not a god-worshipping man, and attending church is a god-worshipping activity,” he explained.
My eyebrows raised. “Well ain’t that something special. I ain’t ever met a man who isn’t god-worshipping or god-fearin’. You’re something special, Arvin Russell. Something special indeed.”
An impish smile stretched across his face. “I take it you’re not much of a godly woman yourself.”
“Can you tell?” I laughed. “Well… Ain’t that your sister coming out of the front? I’ve noticed that you drive her home every day.”
He perked up and peered over his shoulder. He stumbled to his feet, and I mimicked his movements, grabbing his upper arm. The plush cotton shirt was soft under my skin and his aged overalls suited him well. He turned back to me, staring at my hand.
“I didn’t realize you… noticed me,” he stuttered. “I really have to go now. There’s some nasty men out there that go around hurting my baby sister —“
“I know, I know. But before ya go… Are ya busy tonight?”
He gave me a peculiar stare. “Well - no, most people wouldn’t be.”
“Great!” I interrupted. “That means you can join me tonight. Meet me in the forest tonight. I’ll show you how to really live life to the fullest, Arvin Russell. You’re something special.”
“Where?”
“You go to the church. Go through the grave yard to your immediate left. Once you come across my pa’s grave, F/n L/n, go right into the forest there. Got it?”
“Y - yes, ma’am.”
“You’re a polite boy, Arvin Russell. Now, go take care of your baby sister.” He began pulling away, but as he did so, I grabbed his jaw and turned his head, placing a kiss on his soft cheek. He was absolutely stunned, and I swore that I’ve never made a man redder in my life.
I pulled away, sending him one last grin. I crossed my arm ad sent him a flirtatious wave. His jaw dropped and he nodded and waved, but he took off like the wind. My gaze followed him as he went to a red car. His sister, who had apparently seen the scene, was giggling and teasing the boy viciously.
I had never seen a man drive off faster than he did.
When he’d left, my excitement died. I returned to my sitting position. And I continued to wait for my mother. She always put off picking me up because she hated me. She’d never said it to my face, but… it was clear. She said that ‘it slipped her mind.’ But I knew better.
So, I waited.
I skidded down the base of the tree and hopped onto the ground. The grass and shrubbery crunched under my bare feet. My shoes had been abandoned by my father’s grave, where I kept my belongings while I went wild. It was habit.
In the distance, I recognized Arvin’s red car’s headlights pulling up to the church. The car stopped and the man stepped out. As soon as the headlights went out, a small speck turned on. Arvin had clearly brought a flashlight with him. Silly boy.
His pace was quick as he dashed across the graveyard. He was quite clumsy, tripping over plots of land on occasion. The flashlight jostled in his grasp as he approached.
Suddenly, the flashlight was on me. His pace slowed. There had been a previous panic to his movements, as though he expected me to make a fool out of him by not showing up at all. I shielded my eyes from the light boring onto me. He stopped in front of me, finally realizing to pull the flashlight away.
“Hello there,” I silkily greeted, sending him a reassuring smile.
I was wearing loose clothes; a skirt with no leggings underneath - my mother would have a hissy fit if she found out -, men’s boots which I had stolen from the previous priest, and my father’s old suit shirt, which was dirty and thin from usage. I crossed my arms and leaned toward him as he stumbled over his own greeting.
“Hello there, ma’am.”
“As cute as you are, Arvin Russell, it’s Y/n L/n to you. We’re friends, aren’t we? No need for such politeness,” I giggled.
“Yes, m - Y/n.” He shifted his weight. “So what are we doing here?”
I snatched the flashlight from him and turned it off, letting us use only the moonlight as our guide. “I’m goin’ to show you how to really live,” I started. “All you folk who stay inside all day unless you’re working… you aren’t really appreciating nature like you should. I’m going to show you what it’s like to live without societal pressures.” My fingers ghosted over his wrist. “No rules.” I grabbed his wrist. “You’re completely free, boy.”
Even in the darkness, I could tell he was blushing from how he tensed under my hold. I dropped the flashlight by the base of the tree. “Wait, we can’t see —“
“Yes we can,” I insisted. “The moon and her stars are out.”
Before he could reply, I took off, pulling him with me. I maneuvered around dense trees. He let out a shout of shock. I recognized his reluctance and let go. But I still ran. I ran like the wind.
“Hey, wait!” he called after me.
I finally heard his footsteps thudding to follow. I let out a laugh as I weaved around another oak. I knew the woods like the back of my hand. I knew where I was going, and Arvin Russell knew I was going somewhere.
I heard him laugh, too, as he panted to keep up. The forest was silent and asleep except for out footsteps as the forest expanded. I knew where I was going. And I couldn’t wait to show Arvin.
His footsteps were right behind me, and I heard him gasp out a plea to slow down. His fingers wrapped around my arm. I laughed and suddenly swerved to him, recognizing the puddle of mud beneath us. His chest collided with me and I burst into giggles as we tumbled to the grassy terrain.
I let out an ‘oof’ as his weight rested against me. He immediately scrambled to remove himself from me. He was still panicked, and I couldn’t have that. Instead, I pushed his right arm and pushed him to the muddy ground. Mud splashed on his overall person and me as I straddled him. I grabbed his shoulders and leaned over him.
For a moment, I wondered if I was making a mistake by inviting him. But when the moonlight illuminated his exhausted features and I saw that twinkle in his eyes, I knew I did not.
He burst out into laughter, playfully pushing at my arm. “You’re batshit crazy, woman! Why, I’ve never met someone like you and I never well! Why, hell…”
I leaned closer to his face. His eyes crinkled out of joy and he turned his head, spitting out some mud-filled saliva. A smile graced his handsome features and I pressed a bold kiss to his forehead. “Damn right you won’t ever meet another person like me. I’m as real as they get, Arvin Russell. You should feel honored that you’re here, covered head to toe in mother nature’s shit.”
He snickered. All of his demureness had washed away. His hand reached up and he slipped a strand of hair behind my ear. I hummed and leaned into his hair. When he pulled away, I did the same, combing his soft brown locks out of his face.
“Nature’s shit,” he repeated. “Never gonna see mud the same again.”
“Good. That’s exactly what I wanted. After tonight, tomorrow… After you’ve met me, you ain’t her gonna see the world the same again. You got it, Arvin Russell?”
“Yes, ma’am,” he hummed. “And I hope I never do.”
I swooped my head closer. A silence fell over us and all that indicated we were even here was our labored pants. I noticed his gaze sweeping across my face and he was staring at my lips with a hunger. As tempting as it was to kiss the handsome boy, he had to earn his keep once and for all. He had to earn his worth.
I suddenly pulled away and rolled off him. Arvin propped himself up on his elbows. “Where are we, anyways?” he inquired as I offered him a hand and pulled him to his feet. He dusted off the larger mud clots on his pants off, and they splattered on the ground.
I tilted my head. “Wouldn’t you like to know, handsome? I’ll have you know, I know these woods like the back of my hand. So don’t you worry for even a second that I don’t know the path.” I pursed my lips, observing both of our filthy attire. “Now, we’re covered head to toe in mother nature’s shit, and I intend to do something about it. Come along, Arvin Russell. We’ll get cleaned up right away.”
I grabbed his wrist and began pulling him along. He laughed again, much more at ease. He tugged at his arm so that my hand fell into his. He interweaved our fingers, squeezing tightly. “Do ya live around here?”
“No. We’re solving this issue the old-fashioned way. Or, at least, my way,” I answered, rubbing my thumb over his callous hand.
We held hands, walking side by side. Ahead was a clearing that led to the river. The rushing water sang. It was oh-so very tempting. I pulled him into the clearing and down to the dirt edge. He suddenly pulled his hand away. “Wait, isn’t it freezing?”
“What, are ya scared, Arvin Russell?” I said, turning to face him as I backed into the rushing water.
“Well, no —“
“Then get the hell in here, ya pussy!” I exclaimed cheerfully as I stepped ankle-deep into the water. Out of habit, I felt the world floating above me and I fell back. I splashed, the world enveloping me completely. I let the water hug my entire body, only my fingers and toes above water. I closed my arms and smiled as the mud drifted from my clothes.
Although it was muffled, I heard more splashes as Arvin entered the river as well. My body began drifting and I finally started floating down the stream. I finally emerged, floating on my back as I tried to plant my feet on the ground. I let out a gasp as my foot slipped, but Arvin grabbed my arm, pulling me to his chest.
I planted my arms around his waist and met his panicked, nervous expression. He still had yet to submerge his upper chest and face, so as we gazed into one another’s eyes, a mischievous idea crossed my mind. His eyes widened at my smirk, as though he immediately detected that I was thinking something.
“Why are ya looking at me like that, Y/n?”
I stroked his cheek. “Well… You may be no god-worshipper, but you still show up, don’t ya? I’m thinking. You’ve been baptized in the name of god. But I think, to truly initiate you into this one-person club of mine, I need to baptize you in the name of yourself. Of nature. Of the flow energy around us,” I remarked in anticipation.
His cheeks reddened. “Are you serious?”
“Never been more so.”
I pushed at his chest and stepped away. I replaced my hand on the small this back, holding him at a side-angle. He didn’t think anything of it, succumbing to my madness. His knees buckled enough so that only his head was above water.
“In the name of me and you and mother nature’s holy ghost, I bless you with a lifetime of freedom and joy and beauty. A lifetime where you flourish in a way that nobody else ever will. You, Arvin Russell, will blossom into a beautiful person with this gift. I bestow upon you the holy ghost of free spirit,” I improved loudly.
I paused for a moment before starting to pull his head and upper chest underwater. His eyes were closed. I held him there for a minute, admiring his handsomeness. His spirit. And then I pulled him up again.
His strong hand grabbed my arm and used my body to stand upright once more. That sparkle in his eyes had never been so prominent. We were chest to chest, the water rushing past our bodies. I held onto his shirt, as the pull was strong. But, in this moment, I knew.
“Arvin Russell, you’re something special. Something special indeed.”
He seemed bewitched. Enchanted. Our faces grew closer. And this time, I let the kiss happen. I led him into the kiss. He was sloppy and inexperienced; just how I liked it. He was so naive. So sweet. So innocent. And yet, there was that fire in him that I’ve been searching for my whole life.
Arvin Russell, you fascinated me.
I suddenly lost my footing. My body submerged in the water, and I pulled Arvin down with me. Water swarmed into my lungs, but I paid it no heed. The water began to pull our bodies down the stream. Both of us were completely submerged, but our eye contact remained.
He was panicked. Scared. But, as I gazed into his eyes, it all seemed to vanish. He was letting me lead him without question.
Our bodies washed up on the shore. Both of our bodies immediate reaction was to throw up the water. However, we both broke out into a fit of laughter. Him, laying on top of me, and me, breathless from his beauty. When we finally caught our breath, I broke my attention away from him, observing our surroundings.
We had washed upon shore. However, the river raged even louder; we were almost at the waterfall. The moon was our lamppost and our surroundings were oh-so clear. We were already soaked to the bone, so of course a certain something came to mind.
Arvin stumbled to his feet and helped me up. The smooth, light stones crunched under my bare feet. It felt like marbles massaging my toes. Arvin held my hand. There wasn’t an ounce of fear or regret in his eyes. He didn’t have to tell me. I already knew he was living.
“Where next?” he gasped, spitting out some more water.
I didn’t reply, pulling him along the shore bank. The roaring grew louder until we came face to face with waves crashing off a cliff. The terrain was jagged and rocky, having a natural wall built, only letting the water through. His eyes widened, as though connecting the dots.
I looked at him expectantly. “Care to voice your concerns?”
Surprisingly, he shook his head. “I trust you. You’re crazy, but god… you’re a genius.”
My heart skipped a beat and butterflies swarmed in my stomach. Not wanting to allow my thoughts to get all muddled, I jumped into the ravine. My feet wee planted against the dirt and rock floor. My legs were strong. Many a day I had jumped from the waterfall and plunged into nature’s tears below.
Arvin stood beside me. He grabbed my hand. He was nervous, but he trusted me. We stared over the edge, the water glimmering and reflecting the sky above. It was still, unmoving. The small lake below called to us like a mother to her newborn baby.
“One,” I counted, "two… three!”
Our feet lifted off the edge. The wind rebelled and fought against us, a fiery cushion against our faces. For a moment, the adrenaline left me paralyzed. But as I gained control of my body, I tightened my grip of Arvin’s hand and I pulled my knees to my chest. Arvin let out a terrified, guttural holler. A tribal escaped from my throat as well as the water grew nearer.
As we were about to collide, we shut our mouths and buried our heads in our chest. The water hurt for but a moment, but it was quickly soothed as our bodies sunk into the water. Our fingers almost drifted apart, but Arvin’s arm shot out and grabbed my wrist.
I let my legs disconnect from my stomach and I opened my eyes. The water was murky and dark. I began kicking my feet, and the moment my head emerged from the water, I pulled Arvin up with me. His head emerged and he panted heavily, the fear slowly escaping his expression. My heart thudded, pounded, in my chest. I swore that, if I didn’t have a rib cage, it would’ve jumped from my chest.
I rotated my body so that I could float on my back. Arvin mirrored my movements, floating beside me effortlessly. Peace and comfort washed over me as I stared at the star-lit sky. The waterfall echoed around us, waves crashing over the cliff. The moon twinkled in the sky, as though it was congratulating us on our bravery.
“That was…” he trailed off, kicking his foot.
“Yes, it was,” I finished. “But it’s only just begun, Arvin Russell. The first day of the rest of your life starts now.”
“If it’s with you, I can’t wait.”
Silence fell over us. Unanimously, we mustered the strength to swim to shore. When we walked out, the weight of the water dripping from my bodice weighed me down. I felt no anxiety as I unbuttoned my soaked shirt and let my skirt fall to the ground. At the same time, Arvin kicked off his boots and pulled off his shirt, revealing his toned chest.
It was tense, but in a good way. We plopped on the rocky ground and held hands. His hands were soft with wrinkles. I leaned my head on his firm shoulder. I often spent my days and nights like this; but never with someone else. Never with him. And that made all the difference.
We fell back on the grass.
“Do you… have places to be tomorrow?” he asked, finally breaking the silence.
“Never. This, here, with you, is my home.”
“Then… can we stay here the rest of the night?”
“Of course, Arvin Russell. ‘Was already planning on it, boy.”
“Hi I’m y/n l/n!”
“I’m Tom Holland! And today we are with Allure!”
“We will be doing 9 things we’ve never tried before!”
“Cut!”
Both Tom and I laughed as we stood behind a little podium for the intro, the white background illuminating the studio.
“Why am I nervous?” I looked at Tom as my hands fanned my face.
“Don’t be.” he gripped my shoulder, giving a light rub of his thumb.
“Starting in 3, 2, 1… Action!“ the studio assistant quickly walked off of camera, nodding to us to get started.
The studio workers hold up a sign saying Load laundromat machine in 10 seconds.
“What the heck is a laundromat?” I say, looking at Tom with a confused face.
“No way!” His mouth is wide open, looking at the camera in awe.
He tosses the coins in his hand as he is still looking to see if I am joking.
“Cut!”
“Sorry.” I apologized to the team. “Seriously though, what is a laundromat machine?”
“Okay, it’s a washing machine that you have to pay for every use.” Tom said as he demonstrated with the coins.
“This is so cool, usually we just toss our clothes in the tube that goes down to the laundry room” I looked closely at the buttons.
“This is absolutely wild. Can you believe this?” Tom looks at his brothers who are behind the camera with the crew.
The boys just laughed and shrugged their shoulders.
“Y/n, please tell me you’re joking.” the direction held their hands together as if they were praying.
“No, seriously I didn’t know what that was.”
Tom just began hysterically laughing, tears forming at his eyes, and his hands grabbing at his abdomen.
“I feel so stupid.” I brought my hands up to my face, covering to show that i’m embarrassed.
“It makes perfect sense why you don’t know what it is, y/n” Daya said as she walked up to me from backstage.
She comforted me and made sure I didn’t hate on myself for it.
“Okay i’m good.” I smiled at the director.
“Perfect. Filming in 3, 2, 1 … Action!”
Arvin blurb where maybe him and the reader are trying for a baby and then end up having a darling baby girl named Lenora and Arvin being absolutely in love and always kissing his little girl's cheeks
Ded
You smile as you watch your husband coddle your little girl through the screen door. He points out the monarchs and the blue jays, showing her the clouds. He bounces her up and down. He's so infatuated with her and you know why.
It was so hard to get your little baby girl here. She was the first of your little loves to make it earth side, two brothers and a sister preceding her. Arvin’s heart broke a little more each time you'd lost a baby, so he couldn't get too excited until he was holding that sweet little babe who looked just like him. And the first time he'd called her Lenora, you couldn't take that away from him, so that's what you'd named her. And now here she was, four months old and the light of her daddy's life.
He brings her down and kisses her cheeks noisily, her gurggly giggles filling the air around you. You giggle yourself as Arvin cradles her to his hip. He sits beside you, leaning in to kiss your cheek,
"I don't know how you did it but goddamn she's perfect." He murmurs. You watch, smile etched into your features as he lays her down across the blanket the two of you sit on. You lean on his shoulder,
"She is, isn't she? Everything you expected?" You ask. He nods,
"Better. She's everything I've ever dreamed about and more." He murmurs, watching Lenora take one of her feet and drag it up to her mouth, chewing on her little toes. He smiles as you dampen a paper towel and dab at her feet, paranoid of something happening to her. Anything.
"You're everything and more I've ever hoped for, ya know?" He poses. You glance at him, smiling softly,
"Yeah, you tell me every once in a while. But it's nice to hear." He chuckles,
"I love you. And our baby girl." He growls, lifting her and kissing her pudgy cheeks again. She giggles, squealing as he tickles her neck. And you can't help but think that you're the one that's lucky. You have a gorgeous, loving husband, and the cutest little girl with all of her daddy's features you love. You really have the best life.
Your eyes flicked to the clock every few seconds as you waited for Arvin to come home from work. You busied yourself by watering your plants, sighing deeply as another shriveled leaf fell off and crumpled to the door. Finally, the front door opened.
“Hi, doll. I’m home.” Arvin said as he came through the door. You put your watering can down and practically ran to hug him. You wrapped your arms around his neck and kissed his face all over to greet him.
“Hi, honey. I missed you. How was work?”
“Same old. How was your day?” He shrugged and placed his hands on your waist, absentmindedly drumming his fingers on your dress.
“Same old for me too. I can’t get these damn plants to grow.” You sighed and looked over your shoulder at your shriveled potted plant.
“They just need time, baby girl. They’ll grow.”
“I hope so. Are you hungry? I was just starting dinner.” You told him as he took his cap off and hung it up on a hook beside him. You started to comb his messy hair out of his face with your fingernails in the way you knew he liked.
“I could eat.” He nodded, smiling a little at the feeling of your hands in his hair.
“Good. Because I made your favorite.” You smirked and leaned in a little.
“You’re the best, sweetheart.” Arvin squeezed your hip and walked away. You watched him disappear into the living room and frowned a little. He never picked up on your signals for when you wanted a kiss and it was starting to bum you out. You always had to initiate the kisses and just once, you would like for him to kiss you to show his gratitude.
“Arvin? Why don’t I draw you a bath so you could clean up before supper? I’m sure you’re awfully dirty from being out in the tar pits all day.” You said as you followed him into the living room.
“You don’t have to do that, baby doll. You’ve done enough.” Arvin replied as he gave you a soft smile.
What you wanted to say was, “yeah, I have. So get over here and and kiss me” ,but you just smiled instead.
“It’s no problem. That’s just how I show my love for you. I like to do things that help you out.” You told him, trying to hint at how you were feeling. You walked into the bathroom and left the door open as you turned the bathtub faucet on.
“I appreciate that, sweetheart. I appreciate everything you do for me.” Arvin smiled softly at you through the open door. You sighed when he didn’t get the hint but refused to give up.
“You know how else I like to show my love? Affection. I could kiss you all day if you let me.” You shouted over the sound of the running water.
“Aw. That’s sweet.” Arvin chuckled, still not catching on.
“What about you?” You asked innocently. “How do you like to show your love?”
“I don’t know. Guess I just do it without thinking about it.” Arvin shrugged and leaves against the doorway of the bathroom.
“Right.” You sighed and stood up, wiping your wet hands off on your dress. You went to leave the bathroom but Arvin stopped you by gently grabbing your arm.
“Wait, sweetheart?”
“Yes?” You asked, hoping he would ask you to join him in the bath.
“You got a cobweb in your hair.” He chuckled and tilted your head down so he could pull the cobweb out of your hair.
“Oh. Thanks.” You smiled tightly and left the bathroom. You stopped to water your ever dying plants before going to the kitchen. Arvin wandered in a little while later just as you were putting dinner on the table.
“Thanks again for running the bath for me, baby doll.” He said as he gave you a soft smile.
“No problem.” You returned the smile and shut the oven door with your hip. You placed a plate down in front of Arvin before running your fingers through his wet hair to get it off his forehead. He smiled as you tilted his face to kiss his cheek.
“Eat up. You got another long day of work tomorrow. You need your energy.” You said as you put some mashed potatoes on his plate.
“I will. Thank you for making dinner, sweetheart. You’re the best.” Arvin said as he gave you a grateful smile. As much as you loved that smile, you couldn’t help but wish for more.
“Of course, honey. I love you.” You said as you put your hand on top of Arvins.
“You too.” He gave your hand a squeeze before pulling it away from you to pick up his fork. You let out a little sigh before picking up your fork as well. In your opinion, “You too” wasn’t as good as “I love you too”, but Arvin didn’t seem to know that.
That night, you climbed into your shared bed as Arvin blew out the candle lighting the room.
“Goodnight, sweetheart.”
“Goodnight, Arvie.” You said as you wrapped your arms around him. You rested your head against his back and listened to the soft sound of his breathing until you fell asleep.
The next day, you got your uniform on and prepared to go to work. Arvin was working out in the shed on something, so you went outside to see him.
“I’m leaving for work now.” You told him.
“Okay. Bye, baby girl.” Arvin said as he smiled at you over his shoulder. You couldn’t see what he was doing but you doubted it was so important that he couldn’t say goodbye to you.
“I’m going.” You said again.
“Okay. I’ll see you when you get home.” He replied, still not stopping what he was doing.
“Can I have a kiss?” You asked, feeling silly for even having to ask.
“I’m kinda busy right now, sweetheart.” He said in a kind tone.
“Oh. Okay.” You said quietly. You walked over to him and placed a quick kiss on his cheek.
“See you later.” You said softly before leaving the shed.
After a particularly crummy day at work, all you wanted to do was go home and cry. You hoped Arvin would be a source of comfort for you, the way you always were for him when he needed you to be.
“Hey, baby doll. How was it?” Arvin asked from his seat on the couch when you walked through the front door.
“I had a bad day.” You said as you climbed into his lap and wrapped your arms around his neck.
“Aw. I’m sorry, honey. Do you want to talk about it?” He asked as he rubbed his hand up and down your back.
“Some customers are just so rude.” You sighed. “I accidentally spilled a little water on this lady and she screamed at me in front of the whole restaurant.”
“That sounds really touch. But I bet I could make you feel better.” Arvin smirked as he cupped your face and made you look at him.
“Yeah?” You raised an eyebrow. “What did you have in mind?”
“Let me show you.” He said before connecting your lips in a kiss. The kiss got heated quickly and he picked you up to carry you to the bedroom. He managed to take your mind off your troubles for a little while but when you were done, your mind was at war again. You rolled over onto Arvins chest and looked up at him in the lighting of the setting Sun.
“Arvie? Can we talk?”
“Yeah, baby girl. What’s on your mind?”
“It’s just, I know you love me. But sometimes I feel like you don’t like it when I touch you. You don’t really respond to physical affection. I’m always trying to kiss you and hold your hand but you don’t do the same to me. Its starting to make me feel unwanted by you. Is that true? Do you not want me?” You asked as you looked up at him. Arvin didn’t respond, so you propped yourself up on your elbow to look at him.
“Arvin?” You asked and shook him a little. You titled his face towards your own, only to see that he was fast asleep. You let out a sigh and flopped back onto the bed. It was starting to seem like you’d never get through to him.
You had off the next day so you decided to make some food and bring it to Arvin. You packed a sandwich and an apple into a brown paper bag before driving out to the tar pits.
“Hey, sweetheart. What are you doing here?” Arvin smiled in surprise when you ran up to him. You hugged him tightly before kissing him hello.
“I had the day off so I thought I’d bring you lunch.” You said as you handed him the paper bag. Arvin removed his arms from around your waist to accept the bag, ending the hug sooner then you would’ve wanted.
“Aw, thank you baby doll. You didn’t have to do that.”
“I thought you might be hungry. Plus, I missed you.” You said as you wrapped your arms around his neck.
“I missed you too, baby girl.” He smiled. You leaned in to kiss him but before you could, he turned his head.
“Let me introduce you to my boys.” Arvin said as he let go of you and walked over to his crew of men. You smiled sadly at the rejection and walked with him to the group of workers.
“This is George.” Arvin said as he gestured to a dust covered man.
“Why, hello gorgeous. You must be Arvins little lady.” George said as he took your hand.
“I am.” You smiled as George kissed the back of your hand.
“Well it’s a pleasure to meet you. Arvin never shuts up about you. But I can see why.” George said, making Arvin turn a rosy red.
“Shut up. Do not.” Arvin mumbled shyly as he looked down at the ground.
“Russell! We need you over here, boy.” The boss yelled from somewhere in the distance.
“I’ll be right back, baby girl.” Arvin told you before running towards his boss.
“He’s lucky to have you. I know if you were my girl, I’d never be able to keep my hands off of you.” George told you, making you chuckle at the irony.
“I appreciate that. But Arvins a little more reserved. He’s not into all the lovey dovey stuff.” You smiled sadly.
“Really? I never understood people like that. If I could kiss my lover in public, I’d do it ever chance I got.” George sighed as he wistfully looked at one of the men on the crew. The man noticed George staring and gave him a shy smile.
“Why can’t you?” You wondered.
“People don’t always agree with my kind of love. Better safe then sorry.” George said with a tight smile. You gave him a sympathetic smile in return before looking over at the man he had been staring at.
“I’m sorry.” You sighed. “Everyone should be able to kiss the one they love. No matter who’s watching.”
“I agree. Nothing more beautiful then kissing your beloved without a care in the world about who’s watching.” George smiled as he looked over at the man again. You looked past him and saw Arvin talking to his boss, making you sigh a little.
“Yeah. I think so too.”
Arvin finished talking to his boss and walked over to you. You wanted to pull him into a hug, but you restrained yourself.
“Thanks for coming to see me, sweetheart. ” Arvin smiled warmly at you. You returned the smile and slipped your hand into his.
“No problem.” You told him and gave his hand a squeeze. A couple of the other guys came over and Arvin pulled his hand out of yours and pretended to cough.
“Sorry, sweetheart. You know I don’t like that public affection kinda stuff.” He leaned down to say into your ear.
“Right. Sorry. I forgot.” You gave him a fake smile and folded your arms. Your eyes flicked back to George before falling to the ground. The men around you chatted as you silently came to a decision. If Arvin didn’t want your affection, then you were no longer going to give it to him.
The next day, you tied your apron around your waist and got ready for your shift at the restaurant.
“All right. I’m heading to work.” You called from the front door.
“Okay. Bye, sweetheart.” Arvin said from the kitchen. He absentmindedly tilted his head to the side, awaiting your kiss. Instead, he heard the front door close. Arvin stopped what he was doing and curiously went out to the front room.
“No kiss?” He said to himself as he scratched his head. He shrugged it off and went out to the shed, but he couldn’t shake how much it bothered him. As the hours passed by, Arvin couldn’t stop thinking about it. He figured if you were mad at him, he could make it up to you by being helpful. He left the shed and started to boil some water to get started on dinner.
When you came home that evening, Arvin was sitting on the couch with some tools in his lap.
“I’m home.” You said as you hung up your jacket.
“Hi, baby doll. I’m in here.”
Arvin watched as you went over to your plants and watered them. You then walked into the living room and sat on the couch, but not beside him. Arvin frowned, having grown used to you sitting on his lap or right next to him whenever you were on the couch together.
“I’m glad you’re home. I missed you.” Arvin said as he tilted his head to the side a little, expecting a kiss.
“I missed you too. Hungry?” You asked as you got off the couch. Arvin frowned again and followed you into the kitchen.
“I am. And I figured you would be too. I got started on dinner.” Arvin said as he showed you the soup he had been making.
“Aw. Thanks, hon. I appreciate that.” You said with a grateful smile. You didn’t seem mad, but you also didn’t seem like yourself. Arvin took his hat off and placed it on the table, hoping you’d scratch his head like you usually did. When you didn’t get the hint, he ran his hand through his hair and cleared his throat to get your attention.
“Are you okay?” You asked. “Does your throat hurt?”
“Yeah, yeah I’m fine. Just been wearing this hat too long. My head needs a rest.” Arvin said said as he ran his fingers through his hair again. He tried to scratch his head the way you always did, but his fingernails were too short.
“Are you itchy or something?” You asked him.
“No. I’m okay.” Arvin said and stopped trying.
“Okay.” You chuckled and gave him a strange look. You finished making dinner together and ate it in the dining room. You still didn’t seem mad at Arvin, but you also didn’t put your hand on top of his like you usually did. It bothered him, but he didn’t say anything.
That night, you climbed into bed as Arvin blew out the light.
“Goodnight, my dear.” He said as he got into bed beside you.
“Goodnight.” You said through a yawn. Arvin laid down and expected to feel your arms around him like usual, but he felt nothing. Arvin frown and backed up until his back touched yours.
“Arvie? Are you okay?” You asked him.
“I’m fine. Just a little cold.” He lied and hoped you would get the hint.
“Aw, baby. Here.” You said and sat up. Arvin got excited, thinking you were gonna cuddle him like your normally did. Instead, he felt a blanket being draped over his body.
“Take an extra blanket.” You said and flopped down on the bed. Arvin let out a sad sigh and pulled the blanket tighter around his body. He didn’t know what he did, but he was determined to get to the bottom of it.
As the week went on, your usual behavior continued. You acted the way you always acted around Arvin, just without the affection. When seven days had gone by and he hadn’t gotten a single kiss, Arvin knew he needed to say something. He found you on the couch one day and stood in front of you.
“Baby doll? Can we talk?” Arvin asked as he nervously toyed with the hem of his white t shirt.
“Of course. What’s on your mind?”
“Are you mad at me?”
“What? I’m not mad. Not at all.”
“Well have I done something to upset you?” Arvin asked as he sat beside you.
“No. Why do you ask?” You wondered. Arvin looked down at his lap and mumbled something under his breath.
“What was that?” You asked.
“You don’t kiss me no more.” Arvin whined a little. “Or hold me at night. And you haven’t played with my hair in days.”
“Oh. You noticed that, huh?” You asked in surprised.
“Yeah. I just feel like you used to always be touching me in some way and you don’t no more. I just miss it is all.” Arvin said softly as he avoided eye contact with you.
“You miss it?”
“Course I do. I love all the lovey dovey stuff you do. I don’t know why you stopped. I thought I did something wrong. I’m sorry if I did.”
“Oh. No, no.” You said as you cupped Arvins face between your hands. “You didn’t do anything wrong., baby. I just thought you didn’t like that stuff. I felt like I was bothering you or something.”
“You weren’t bothering me, sweetheart. Not at all.” Arvin assured you as he leaned his cheek against your palm.
“Then how come you never kissed me or held my hand? How come I always had to be the one to initiate it?”
“Let me show you something.” Arvin said and took your hand. He brought you out to the shed he was always working in and opened the door. You watched him curiously as he picked up a wooden plank with three wide holes cut out in it. It had a chain attached to either side and a hook in the center.
“I been working on this for you. It’s for your plants.” Arvin explained as he held the device up by the hook.
“You made this for me?” You asked as a smile tugged at your lips.
“Yeah. Look.” Arvin said as he walked over to a hook on the wall. He hung the device up and put three flower pots in the holes.
“You’re always saying your plants don’t grow. I thought if we hang this up by the window, they could get some more sunlight. Plus, the water can drain out of the pots at the bottom.” Arvin explained. You looked between him and the device in awe, unsure what to say. Arvin noticed you staring and sheepishly looked down at the ground.
“I’m not like you.” He said quietly. “I’m not soft. I don’t know always how to say or do the right thing to make you feel my love. Nobody ever taught me how.”
“Oh. Honey.” You pouted and went to wrap your arms around Arvin. He wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you closer.
“I may not know how to show love the way you do, but I know how to build things. So I built this for you. Because I love you. And this is how I show that.”
“I love it, honey. And I love you. I’m sorry I’ve been withholding affection. I honestly thought you didn’t want it.”
“I always want it. I always want you.” Arvin said as he tilted your chin up. “And if you need me to hold your hand and kiss you to make you feel my love, then I can do that.”
“I don’t want you to change for me, baby. It’s okay that we show our love in different ways. That’s what makes us work as a couple.”
“So you’ll keep kissing me? And playing with my hair?” Arvin asked hopefully.
“Of course I will. I missed it too.” You said as you reached up to run your fingers through his hair. He sighed happily before resting his forehead against yours. You tilted your head to the side so you could kiss him. He cupped your face with his hands to deepen the kiss, making up for the lost time.
When you pulled away, you slipped your hand into Arvins and led him back into the house. He thought the device he made and hung your plants up while you watched from the couch. He turned around when he was finished and you clapped for him. Arvin got a deviously look on his face all the sudden and before you could ask what was wrong, he ran towards you and tackled you on the couch. He pinned you down and kissed every part of your face that he could reach.
“I love you. I love you. I love you.” He said between each kiss as you laughed in delight. Finally, he kissed your lips and let it linger. When he pulled away, you gazed into each other’s eyes for a while with dreamy smiles.
“I really do love you, sweetheart.” He said softly. “More than anything. I know I don’t say it enough. But I’m trying.”
“I love you too. And I appreciate that you try. And so do my plants.” You smiled as you looked over at your hanging plants. Arvin returned the smile and moved your face back towards his with his pinky. He leaned down to kiss you again before looking at you with a soft smile.
“You’re worth trying for.”
Idk if anybody had this idea before but well here it goes: Arvin Russell having a smaller wife -in size- and they are both awkward bcz the marriage was sorta out of business but they are both getting along some fluff will be great (add filth if u want :3 )
P.S: srry rly for being awkward it's my first time to request smth😅
Hi! I hope you don't mind, I'm gonna answer this as a black!reader(bc I don't see a lot of black readers).
TW: Business partners to lovers, mentions of Lenora's death and the serial killer couple, Spoilers for tdatt, slow burn(ish).
Your daddy disapproved of Arvin and so did your momma but you knew this was the only way. See, you had always wanted a house and business of your own but being a young small black girl, you often were looked down upon and often times, given the classic talk of "well, maybe this is outta your league little girl." and told to just go find a black man and stay in your "neck of the woods". When you got away from the person who made these comments, you just rolled your eyes and said,
"Well what does he know? That old shit has nary a business bone in his body. Old hick."
Arvin overheard your personal pep talk and said,
"Umm little girl?"
"JESUS CHRIST." you said, startled.
"I'm so sorry it's just you were yelling and I thought you were hurt, my apologies" Arvin said.
You looked him up and down and immediately knew he would be a perfect pawn to get what you need.
"It's okay." You said with a smirk on your face.
Arvin began to walk away when suddenly, you blurted out:
"Hey listen. How would you like an opportunity to make money and get out of this shit town?"
Arvin stopped dead in his tracks but he didn't turn around:
"And how would I do that? Selling Girl Scout Cookies?" Arvin asked. You could hear the bemusement mixed with genuine interest in his voice.
You chuckled. This wasn't the first time you had been underestimated because of your size.
"Not quite. See I'm fixing to start a business and buy a house but I can't do that since I'm-" you pointed to your skin.
"I don't know little girl sounds like a big ask for someone so small." Arvin chuckled
"Listen here Mister, I am 20 and a LEGAL adult just like you. I may sure as hell be damn small but these dreams and the money I'll cut you will be bigger than the fattest man alive, so what do you say?" you said.
"What are we selling? Arvin said, interested.
"Teas, coffee, specialized refreshments." You smiled.
"You really think people want that?" Arvin said.
"Well not these people, that's why I said we're getting out of here. Now come on, I'll let you taste the product." You said pulling Arvin's arm.
6 months later:
"It says here, we need to be married in order to get the house and the storefront." Arvin said.
"Nice try, pal." You said, believing it but not wanting it to be true.
"Business partners don't lie to each other, darlin' " Arvin said with a smirk.
Over the past 6 months, Arvin had taken a liking to you. You were ambitious, pretty, outspoken, goal driven and not a bad cook either. You two always had moments where it felt like you would kiss but you never did. So Arvin convinced himself that you were off limits.
"Alright fine, I know a chapel we can go to." You said begrudgingly.
"Actually?" Arvin didn't think you'd go this far for what you wanted but in a way, he was kind of happy you did go this far.
"Yes Actually now stop wasting time and get dressed." You said.
"Yes ma'am" Arvin called.
When you two arrived at the chapel, You saw your preacher. It was nice to know that this man who had known you since you were in diapers, is marrying you off. Admittedly, you wished it was with someone whom you had loved for years.
Once he married you off, the next stop was your parents house:
"ABSOLUTLEY NOT. UNDER NO SURCOMSTANCES WILL I ALLOW THIS. HOW DARE THIS THING COME IN MY HOUSE AND TELL ME THAT HE WANTS TO MARRY MY Y/N." Your dad said.
"Daddy I'm sorry, It's all for the house and store. I promise."
"FIND ANOTHER WAY." Your dad said.
"Daddy, this is the way. I'll finally be able to take care of you and momma." you said almost tearing up. You haded when he would yell at you.
"I just don't want you to be unhappy." Your dad said.'
"Than let me marry Arvin and get us out of this place." you said through tears.
"Okay baby. If this is what you need to do then do it." Your dad said begrudgingly.
You hugged your momma and oveheard your dad telling Arvin that he would kill him if he tried anything. You went upstairs, packed a bag, and left. Arvin did the same and both of you were off to New York.
1 year later
You and Arvin had just gotten the title to the store and you couldn't be happier. Arvin was falling more and more in love with you as the days went on. You found out a lot about him too, like he had shot a preacher that drove his sister to suicide, how he almost became a victim of these serial killers, and so forth. You were still sleeping in different "beds"(Arvin sleeping on a sofa):
"You sure, country boy? I don't mind sleeping on the couch. I could fit a lot better." You asked genuinely concerned for his wellbeing on that sofa.
"Ladies get the better bed. Besides, It's comfy enough." Arvin said. You realized that Arvin would never tell you if he was in pain or sick or anything about himself really. You had to pry into him to figure out the serial killer story.
You caught yourself staring at Arvin more and more. You never noticed how veiny his arms were or how big his biceps were. He was incredibly protective over you(even though you didn't need it) and he was incredibly strong, like he lifted a 100lb bag of coffee beans over his shoulder like it was nothing. It was safe to say you were starting to fall for him but this is what made you 100% head-over-heels for him:
One cold night in December, you were shivering in the bed. You had woken up from a nightmare and desperately needed to go back to sleep because you had a meeting the next day. You saw Arvin tossing on the couch and decided you couldn't take it anymore:
"Hey Arvin?" you asked as gently as possible
"What's the matter, Y/n?" he asked groggily.
"Uhm, I'm cold." You said sheepishly.
"What do you want me to do about that?" Arvin asked with a smirk on his face. He knew exactly what you wanted, he just wanted to hear you say it.
"You're really gonna make me say it?" you said half embarrassed, half jokingly.
"Mhm. If you want it that badly." Arvin said smugly.
"Arvin can you sleep with me?" You said regretfully.
"What's the magic word?" He said now with a full grin.
"Pleeeeaaaassseeee?" You said.
"Good Girl." He said. This sent butterflies through your body.
You two got in the bed and he brought the blanket from the couch. You snuggled up to him and he planted your face in his neck.
"Is this gonna become a daily thing, darlin'?" Arvin asked.
"I don't know. Do you want it to become a daily thing?" You replied.
"I don't mind." He said.
Arvin didn’t care much about his birthday, he never bothered planning any sort of celebration or party, he found it all unnecessary. He loved to celebrate your birthday though, and your anniversary, and Christmas, any opportunity to spoil you really. You liked spoiling him too, but he always appreciated the gesture much more than he cared about any of the actual gifts. He just wasn’t a very materialistic person, which is why this year you’d decided to give him an experience for this birthday instead of any physical object.
You would have loved to fly him to some exotic location and have some big romantic weekend, but you couldn’t afford anything like that. So you went with something much simpler, camping. One of your friends offered the perfect spot for a romantic getaway, it was secluded in the woods, perked on top of a large hill with a great view, and less than a mile from a massive lake. You were overjoyed with the find, and the same friend helped you make a list of everything you would need. You proposed the idea to Arvin and he was excited, spending the weekend alone with you was his ideal birthday really.
Although he was a little reluctant to let you plan the trip and pay for it, you wouldn’t budge on the matter, and he was forced to concede eventually. He did double check your packing list though, just to make sure you hadn’t missed anything essential. Once you were both sure you had everything you’d need you loaded it all into his car and headed out. It was about an hour drive, and it was a bit difficult to navigate the truck to the campsite, but the view was worth the effort. You were surrounded by a circle of trees, the forest was buzzing and everything smelled fresh. Below your campsite you could see the corner of the lake, and in the middle of the campsite there was a makeshift fire pit born from the hundreds of campers who had been there before you.
You attempted at first to unload the car and set up the tent yourself, insisting Arvin relax, but there was no way he’d let you do it all yourself. So you two put up your tent and piled your things inside. By the time you had your campsite all set up the sun was starting to set, and both of you were getting hungry. For your first night you’d decided to pre pack some sandwiches for dinner, so all you had to do was gather a bit of wood and start a fire. You two snuggled up next to each other in some folding lawn chairs while you ate and watched the sun go down.
“This is incredible,” Arvin hummed contently before he looked over at you, “You know I think this is already my best birthday ever.”
You flushed, “Well it’s not actually your birthday until tomorrow, but thank you. It’s really nice out here.”
“Yeah it is,” he agreed, tracing his hand over one of yours, “We should get out the s’mores before it gets too dark.”
“Don’t you wanna save those for tomorrow?” you frowned, “I mean I didn’t bring a cake or anything so that’s kind of our only dessert.”
“I’m sure we’ll have enough for tonight and tomorrow,” he hummed, “Plus it’s my birthday trip, I think I’m entitled to some s’mores if I want them.”
You rolled your eyes and pushed yourself out of your chair, “I’ll be right back.”
You returned with graham crackers, a bag of marshmallows, several Hershey’s bars, and some metal skewers you thought would be perfect to roast the marshmallows on.
“Yummy,” Arvin hummed, ripping into the marshmallows and throwing one into his mouth.
You carefully placed one of them on your skewer and dipped it into the fire, “They’re so much better roasted.”
“They’re delicious either way,” he said with a mouthful of marshmallow, making you crinkle your nose.
“It’s rude to speak with your mouth full Arvin,” you scolded playfully.
He laughed, “Oh I forgot, you fell in love with me for my good manners,” he placed another marshmallow onto his skewer and shoved it into the fire, “Did you ever tell ghost stories when you were little?”
You knit your brows as you tried to remember, “No, I don’t think so. There was rumor that one of the houses in town was haunted, but that’s the closest I can remember.”
He nodded, “Lenora and I used to tell them to each other,” his hand slipped over your leg, squeezing your thigh before he continued, “Not just when we were camping, but that always made them scarier. They’re so cheesy, I can’t believe I used to be scared of that shit…”
“That’s cute Arvin,” you laughed, “Do you remember any of them?”
He rubbed the back of his neck, “Uh, I don’t know, I haven’t thought about them in a long time.”
You pulled your marshmallow from the fire and began assembling your s’more, “Could you try and tell me one?”
“You wanna hear a cheesy ghost story?” he chuckled.
You nodded, “Of course, I like it well you tell stories, your voice is nice.”
He blushed and bit his cheek, “I suppose I probably remember enough…”
“Yay!” you cheered and leaned back in your chair, “Well get on with it.”
He let out a low hum as he pulled his burning marshmallow away from the fire. He blew it out, the marshmallow was nearly black, “It starts with this criminal, a murderer I think. I don’t remember exactly what happened to him but basically he loses his hand and it gets replaced with a hook. So he’s this hook handed killer, and he was always going after pretty young girls,” he glanced over at you, “It took years to catch him, and when they finally did they hung him. So he dies, but since his soul was so twisted it couldn’t rest properly, and he came back as a ghost. Now he wanders all over the country looking for more pretty young girls to kill. Oh!” he cracked a big smile, “And he especially likes girls with (y/h/c).”
You rolled your eyes, “I can’t believe that used to scare you.”
“That one didn’t scare me, it scared Lenora,” he defended, “I used to tell it better.”
Arvin kept trying to recall more and more details about the story while you finished your s’mores. You were almost certain that he was making it up just to try and scare you. You humored him, nodding along with whatever new details he added, laying your head on his shoulder while he talked. You two continued like that until the fire started to sizzle out. Arvin volunteered to fully extinguish it so you could get comfy in your makeshift bed.. Inside the tent you’d laid your sleeping bags on top of each other to provide a bit of padding and brought a pile of blankets to keep yourselves warm. You wanted the tent to be as comfortable as possible so you’d brought more than a fair share of blankets and pillows.
“Fires good,” Arvin promised as he crawled into the tent, zipping it closed behind him, “You look comfy.”
You smiled, “I’ll be comfier once you’re in here with me.”
“I’m coming,” he promised as he began stripping his clothes.
He got down to his boxers and crawled under the blankets beside you, “Ready for bed kitten?”
“I’m pretty tired,” you snuggled up to his chest.
“Me too,” he wrapped his arms around you and pressed his lips to the top of your head, “Thank you for planning this, I love you.”
“I love you too,” you cooed back.
He held you close to him until you fell asleep. Admittedly it was more difficult than normal, it was harder to drift off without your comfy mattress under you. Snuggling up to Arvin helped, but you already knew you wouldn’t be sleeping as deep as you normally would. Sure enough you found yourself waking up shortly after you drifted off, Arvin was already deep asleep, but you were suddenly uncomfortable. You rolled over so your back was against Arvin’s chest. He scooted closer to you and you closed your eyes in hopes of drifting off again.
When you fell asleep the second time you were able to fall deep enough into sleep that you started to dream. You would have hoped to have some sort of sweet dream about you and Arvin, instead you were struck with the hook man. In your dream he came stalking up to your tent, ripping it open and yanking you from the inside. Luckily you were woken up before anything too gruesome could happen, the sounds of the wind grazing your tent had drawn you back to reality. Arvin was still sleeping soundly, his face buried in your neck, his lips placed against your bare skin. His tight grip helped to relax you after the bad dream. You took a deep breath and closed your eyes, sinking back into him with a smile. The adrenaline started to die down and your pounding heart relaxed.
Until the wind picked up again. This time it was more than just the wind, you heard some sort of awful, high pitched screeching that made your skin crawl. Arvin stirred but didn’t wake up. You sank under the blankets, pulling them up to your eyes, which were darting rapidly around the tent. The screeching sounded again, you tried to calm yourself but your mind was already getting irrational. Really you knew it was just a stray branch or the car, but you couldn’t help picturing the hook man from your dreams. Stalking you outside the tent, running his hook over the car, getting ready to tear you away from Arvin and murder you.
With a small squeal you flipped to face Arvin again, “Arvin,” at first your voice was quiet, still unsure if you wanted to wake him, “Arvin,” this time you were a little louder, pushing against his chest, “Arvin!” you snapped suddenly, just in time for the wind to pick up once more.
He groaned, reaching up to rub one of his eyes before he opened it, “Something wrong baby?”
Your cheeks flushed, suddenly feeling embarrassed that you’d woken him up, “I, uh, I had this kind of weird dream.”
His lips tugged to a frown, “What about?”
“The hookman…” you uttered shamefully.
He smiled and started to chuckle, “Really?”
“Yes!” you fell onto your back dramatically, “Then I woke up and I started hearing this screechy sound, it's freaking me out.”
“I’m sorry baby, I’m sure it was just a tree or something though,” he wrapped his arm around your middle and pressed his lips to your ear, “Or an owl, or anything. We’re in the woods, there are weird noises sometimes.”
“I know,” you groaned, “It’s just nerves.”
He nodded and moved right up next to you, “Well just come here. I promise it was normal forest noises, but if it was a hookman, I would protect you. You’ve got nothing to worry about, you’re always safe with me.”
You snuggled back to his chest, wanting to feel him close again, “Promise?”
“Course, I don’t care if it’s the hookman or the devil himself,” he mumbled against your forehead, “I wouldn’t let anyone hurt you, I love you too much for that.”
“I love you too Arvin,” your cheeks flushed and you smiled, “It’s probably after midnight now.”
“You think so?”
You nodded, “Yeah, so happy birthday.”
“Mmm, thank you baby,” he yawned and leaned in for a quick kiss, “I’m about to pass out again, but you can wake me up if you need me.”
“Of course, thank you hunny,” you cooed sweetly, “You always know just what to say.”
He said nothing, simply pressing his lips to your head again before sleep overtook him.
Arvin gets riled up when you come to him upset, “Those God Damn, no good sons of Bitches! Always picking on you,” he breathes out gripping the wheel tighter as he drove pass the school.
Arvin just dropped you off home, knowing that your safe. He can start to mean business. He parked up out front at some old, rusty garage.
Arvin took out a smoke, lightening it up as he took a puff he sees those hillbillies. Not even thinking that those boys, who seem to bully you. Actually, work there! Which is a coincidence.
“Fucking, thinking they can mess with my girl! Well they got another thing coming,” Arvin scoffed, taking a last drag out of the smoke. Stepping out his truck, Arvin threw away the cigarette as he walks inside the garage.
Seeing that one of them is fixing a hood, he grabs him.
“What the fuck!” Chuck, screeched noticing it’s Arvin!
“You son of a bitch,” Arvin lowly, spoke as he punched the boy’s face. Definitely, giving him a red mark as Arvin leaves him on the floor.
“Oh, Fuck,” Chuck groaned, loudly still hazed by the attack. He was a weaker one out of the three.
“What’s all the commotion,” Tommy comes out scoffing with Nick giving Chuck a raise eyebrow.
Arvin crouched down by the car, so the other two couldn’t see him. He planned his attack carefully, seeing that Chuck distracted them for a minute.
“Arvin,” Chuck breathes out, “What Arvin Russel?” Tommy smirked with Nick.
“Yh,” Chuck muttered, rolling his eyes, “He just punched me,”
“No shit,” Tommy laughed, “That devil will have it, come to beat us up over your little girlfriend,” Tommy shouted out teasing Arvin, “She don’t deserve a man like you, Russel! She deserves better,” he scoffs.
Arvin tighten his jaw line as he listens to Tommy’s filthy, dirty, lairing words. He shook his head, trying not to become mad and blow his cover.
Proceeding to take a base ball bat off of the wall, Arvin smacked Nick right around the waist.
“Fuck,” Nick hissed, holding his side, he charged at Arvin but he tripped Nick up. “As you was saying Watford!” Arvin grins, throwing the bat away.
“Fucking, Russel,” Tommy grumbles, “Leave,”
“I don’t think so,” Arvin coming closer, he punched him. Tommy, punched him back In the face.
“How do you like that Russel,” Tommy smirks, “Bet your girl would be better if she opened her pretty, little legs to me,”
“Not a chance in hell, Watford,” Arvin wiped the blood from his nose, Nick is still on the ground just recovering.
Chuck is just staying out of it for obvious reasons.
Tommy grabs Arvin and they push and shove each other until Arvin goes into a car, Tommy punches Arvin’s face.
“Fuck,” Arvin hisses, Tommy was going to give another blow to his face but he gripped his wrist. Bending it backwards as Arvin pushes Tommy off of him, he punches him into the face this time.
Pushing him down on the floor, kicking him until he is black and blue.
“Don’t,” punch, “You” punch, Ever,” punch, “Bully,” punch, “My Girl,” Punch, “Again!”
“You understand, me,” Arvin growls gripping Tommy’s shirt really tight, ”You no good soon of a bitch,” Tommy just smirks as Arvin threw him down on the floor.
Nick scrambled off of the floor, throwing a punch Arvin’s way. Arvin had his nose bleeding again but punched Nick right in the jaw.
“Stay away from Y/N, I swear Damn you ain’t gonna see light again,” Arvin grunts walking away back to his truck, Tommy and Nick holding their faces as Chuck gets the ice.
It’s not really Chuck that causes problems, it’s just that he follows those boys. What a coward he is! Arvin thought.
Arvin is now bruised up with red marks across his face including his jaw and nose.
“Fuck, Y/N gonna kill me,” Arvin breathe out looking at his knuckles as he drives off. picking up a cigarette and puffing out smoke is only when he sighs in relief.
You didn’t mind Arvin smoking but he knew that you much rather, for him to kiss your face off. Arvin dose just that, when he is with you. Grabbing your face, when you least expect it because Arvin may not like much but he cherishes you like his momma.
If only she was alive, momma would of loved Y/N Arvin thought as he pulled up to your face place. Arvin didn’t get sad very often, seeing that he needs to be tough. Especially, in this world around him and to definitely, protect you.
Arvin grumbles shutting his car to knock on your door, only smiling when he sees your face.
“Arvin?” You furrowed your eyebrows as he said see you tomorrow to you, earlier But none the less you pulled him into a bone crushing hug.
“Sweet girl,” Arvin kisses your forehead, looking into your eyes as he puts your hair behind your ear. He softly, strokes your cheek with his thumbs as he licks his lips at you.
“Arvin, why are you here?” You giggle, still not noticing at what bruises and cuts he has because it’s dark out since it is night time.
Arvin hugged you tighter as your question came out. Nuzzling his face into your shoulder, “Can we go inside,” he whispers in your ear. You nod taking his hand leading him to your room.
You sat on the bed with him, looking up to his face properly. “Arvin Russel, what happened to your face and hands?” You gasped, holding up his hand into yours.
“Um, well,” Arvin gulped, looking the other way. He knew that you wasn’t going to take this lightly but only wanting to protect his girl.
“Silly boy aren’t you,” You sigh, “You stay there! I’m going to get the first aid box, MR,” You walk off swaying your hips just a little bit, enough to tease Arvin.
Luckily, you had the house all for yourself. Your parents are out on a business occasion and well your sibling is out at a friends.
Arvin adjusted his cap as you came back, being quite nervous around you. He’s just a love sick, cute little puppy around you. May act tough and rough but with you he melts like chocolate.
“You going to enlighten me on how you got these injures?” You softly asked, dapping some cotton onto Arvin’s scratch marks on his face.
“Fuck,” Arvin hissed, pouting. You shook your head kissing him on the lips.
Secretly, making him feel 10x better. As you thought, such a sucker for you being a love sick puppy and all!
“I went to a garage, turns out Tommy and his gang work there,” Arvin winced at the pain, you kissed him again.
“Oh right,” You narrowed your eyes at him, playfully. Arvin looked down, feeling ashamed.
“Arvin, don’t look down. Look at me, Baby,” You gently, kissed his lips when he winced at one of the cuts being cleaned.
“I’m not mad,” You give him Adorable, puppy eyes, “I just don’t like seeing you hurt because I care and love you,” you breath out.
“I know, Y/N. I care and love you, Darlin!” Arvin tried to smile, “Sorry, I really need to clean them up, Pretty boy!” You kiss him passionately.
“I had enough of those no good sons of bitches bullying, my girl,” Arvin scoffed, “I wanted to teach them a lesson, they got it worse than me,” referring to the injuries.
You move onto his hands next, damping the bruises with some cotton and water. Looking at his chest you see blood marks on them.
Your heart swelled at the mention of being his girl, “Arvin I’m not saying it’s ok to beat the shit out of them because you got yourself hurt! But..” you paused, looking him into his eyes breathing out slowly.
“Thank you for protecting me because I really do appreciate all your hard work and love for me,” You smile, Arvin actually smiling back as you move down to his chest, side area.
“May I?” You ask giggling, seeing that his flannel is kinda bloody. You giggled because you had to take it off to fix him.
“Yes, sweet girl,” Arvin, kissed your forehead. “You really did yourself this time! Didn’t you,” You sigh as you see you need to get a needle to stitch him back up.
“Yh, sorry,” Arvin pouts towards you, hissing at the pain straight after, “Its ok, Oops! I should of gave you a warning,” You mentioned, kissing his lips.
“No, need I’ve been through worse,” Arvin chuckled, shaking his head. You put three stitches in securely, giving a kiss to his skin where it is marked you use the cotton to clean it.
“Your too good to me, Doll,” Arvin smiled, “Well what can I say?” You grinned, “Got the best boy to be my boyfriend,”
“As if,” Arvin scoffed, “But better than those no good sons of bitches,” he smirks back at you.
“Damn right,” you giggle, “I’m all done cleaning you up,” you pack the medical box up, putting it back into place.
“Thank you so much, Darling,” Arvin caressed your cheek, kissing your lips passionately as he slipped his tongue in to taste yours, “The best god, damn nurse I ever had,” he whispered between kisses.
“I know,” You smirked, straddling his lap as you wrap your arms around his neck, “Your welcome, Pretty boy,” You kiss his lips again, running your fingers through his brown, fluffy hair.
“You are beautiful, Darling,” Arvin runs his hands into your hair looking up into your gorgeous eyes, he smiles leaning in to kiss you again.
“And you are handsome, Arvi,” You booped his nose, laughing.
Without warning Arvin lifted you up placing you on your bed, you giggled.
“ARVIN,” You squealed, as you hit the fluffy pillows.
“Here, Darling. Your duvet,” Arvin wrapped your cover around you, kissing you on the forehead such a gentleman as always to you.
You snuggle up into Arvin’s chest as he wrapped his arms around your waist, “Sweet girl,” he whispers, stroking your head.
“Sweet boy,” You giggled again as Arvin is kissing your face off.
“Sweet for you, my love,” Arvin winked, giving you a cheeky smile as he leaned in to kiss your perfectly, plumped lips.
Taking his thumb to caress your cheek, gently stroking it as Arvin deepen the kiss with his tongue. Your breath hitched feeling the sweet, taste of his lips.
“Your too sweet,” Arvin moaned into the kiss as you grabbed his face gently feeling his jaw line tighten.
“Says you,” You smirked into the kiss, swirling your tongue back into his mouth. Your hands adventure through smoothing his locks, ruffling his hair line as he brings you closer.
“You taste so good,” You moan back into his lips, “So do you, Darlin,” Arvin smiled, actually generally smiled.
Arvin is always happy with you, no matter what. He finds his peace and comfort in you. He always wants to protect you because your his girl.
“Fuck, so precious! Darlin,” Arvin took your hair behind your ear, looking into your eyes, “You are too good to me, Love,”
“You already said that,” You giggle, kissing him again slowly as you take every single, perfect feature of his in.
“I’ll say it again,” Arvin said, “No need,” You shook your head, pressing a finger to his lips.
“Because there is no such thing, we are good for each other. That is what I believe,” You whisper, right into Arvin’s ear, “That, tickles,” he chuckles.
“Good,” You smiled, pushing back his hair away from his eyes to see him.
Arvin pulled you back down onto your chested as you yawned.
“You tired, Darlin?” Arvin asked, you nodded your head, “Sleep Beautiful,” he kisses your cheek.
“Love you, Sweetheart,” Arvin whispers, “Goodnight,”
“Love you too, Arvin,” You smiled into your chest as you said, “Night, Night,” now, kissing him on the cheek.
Arvin blows the candle out, closing his eyes as you snuggle further back into him. He noticed you have kicked the covers off of you earlier, so he put them back on you.
The Devil All The Time Playlists + Hcs
warnings: arvin's religious trauma, christianity,
Tumblr media
I know the movie takes place in the 60s but i think he would like arena rock
Queen, David bowie, AC/DC, Journey, ECT
All that hot boy shit
Probably not very into psychedelic rock
I don't know why but smoke breaks by daddy and the long legs gives me arvin vibes
Also no body no crime and take me to church
Take me to church is obvious, he has a lot of religious trauma-
He tends to just listen to whatever is on the radio
I usually keep hcs in playlist posts music related but I wanna empty my brain
Arvin's favorite fruits are cherries and plums
His handwritting is absolute garbage
He totally could make it nice but he doesn't really care enough to bother-
Lenora listens to Elvis but won't watch any video of him because of how he dances- (elvis's dancing was considered kinda scandalous-)
She probably like the Beatles (specifically in their psychedelic era) and lesley Gore
For more modern stuff I think she would like semler (she makes queer christian music), mitski, and dodie
Also a little bit of kimya dawson
Lots of music about pining and soft domestic stuff
I also think she finely beleives in soulmates- both platonic and romantic
You know the kind of handwriting that girls with really nice, pretty notes have? That's her handwriting but just a little bit more curly
I think she would love peaches
We should talk about lenora more, i love her <3
“God dammit!”
Arvin kicked the side of the car, sending the hood crashing shut again. Out of all the times the car needed to go in to the shop, we were on the run. Luckily, though, Betsy kicked the bucket at a turnpike, so maybe, justt maybe, some kind strangers would pick us up.
I placed my hand on his arm. “Arvin, we ain’t got time to waste. Let’s just pack up and wait for someone to pick us up.”
He sighed, rubbing my hand fervently. He stepped away from the car. “…Yeah. But we ain’t lookin’ too hot. We’re lookin’ like two dumb teenagers who got knocked up.”
I sent him a grin. “As far as I’m concerned that’s exactly what we are. Although, husband and wife has a better ring ta it.”
Arvin’s cheeks reddened considerably, which made me giggle in delight. I wound to the back seat and pulled out my suitcase. Arvin copied, reaching in the front to snatch his scarce belongings. For someone who originated the plan, he sure forgot to pack much stuff - minus a gun, some cash, and his baseball cap.
We slammed the door shut as cars continued to go zooming past the turnpike. After that, we saddled up underneath the sign and held our thumbs out. While Arvin leaned against the sign, I sat on my suitcase.
I had an acute concept of time thanks to my many woodland adventures. I counted the minutes. But, those minutes quickly turned to an hour, and then several more hours.
At some point, I had abandoned my arm. It felt completely numb. Arvin had somehow fallen asleep while standing up and having his thumb stuck out. But there were no takers. And we didn’t have time to waste with the cops supposedly hot on our trail. Especially while loitering beside the get-away vehicle.
I rose to my feet, shaking all my aches away. I was growing hungrier by the minute. I walked to Arvin and shook him awake. I was caught off guard by his immediate instinct to reach for his gun, wide-eyed and scared. But the fear melted away when he realized it was just me.
“Calm down, cowboy,” I stated unpleasantly while quirking my brow and backing up.
He frowned, shaking his head. “S - sorry. What… time is it?”
I glanced at the sky, crossing my arms. “About one o’clock. I hate to say it, lover boy, but we need ta get walkin’. My baby’s hankerin’ for some pork ’n beans and we ain’t got all day to sit here.”
Arvin nodded in agreement. “Right. Uh… which way?”
I shrugged. “Right, I guess.” I reached to pull my suitcase up, but Arvin took it from me with a coy smile.
“We don’t want ya exerting yourself too much, mama.”
And so, we walked. I had no idea the distance, but I knew we had walked a ways by how sore my feet were. I was sure there’d be blisters by time I took my shoes off. Arvin didn’t complain, though, so neither did I. And we continued to hold our thumbs out for each passing car.
None had yet to yield.
My arm was beginning to droop. Arvin was staying strong, but his entire body was slouched. The sun was beginning to set. No civilization was in sight. And my baby desperately needed food. If it had only been me and Arvin, I wouldn’t mind skipping a day of food. But after everything my body had already been through, I needed to keep my baby happy and healthy.
My stomach was beginning to cramp. I halted, hunching over, while clutching my swollen belly. Arvin turned tail and dashed over to me, grabbing my shoulders. He instantly began fretting over me, and I grabbed his hand.
“What’s wrong, darlin’?” he fussed, palming me all over.
“I… I need a break. That’s all.”
“Of course, darlin’. Take all the time you need. You should - you should sit down.”
He dragged the suitcase over and plopped it on the ground. I used him to steady me as I sat, panting briefly. It felt like my abdomen was pulsing.
Arvin, though, was quick to walk out to the side of the road once more. His thumb was jutted into the street somewhat, and I could tell he was growing more and more distressed with each passing moment. It was getting late, and soon, there would be no chance of catching a ride. The sun was beginning to set.
I hobbled to my feet, the pain beginning to subdue. I lifted the suitcase upright again, massaging my stomach. I heard Arvin gasp, and I swiftly turned.
As though it were a miracle, a car had pulled up to the side of the road.
Arvin walked up to the window as it slid down. Behind the wheel was a young woman, blonde and petite and pretty. She was the picture-perfect housewife any man would want. Sitting next to her in the passenger seat was a not picture-perfect man. He was grungy and had unkempt facial hair. The double standard between the two was obvious.
The man leaned out with a boyish grin. “Need a ride?”
Arvin nodded, motioning to me. “Me and my… wife here are real tired, sir and ma’am.”
The woman leaned against the wheel, gaze flickering between us. I hovered behind my lover, gripping the suitcase handle tightly. I tried to muster a friendly grin, although my gut feeling was screaming at me.
“Well, hop on in,” the woman exclaimed. “What sort of folk would we be if we turned away a cute couple like you’s?”
“Thanks,” Arvin replied.
He opened the back door for me. I slid the suitcase in first before entering. Arvin sat next to me, wrapping his hand around my upper arm. I was glad not to be the only one with my guard up.
They started driving. For a few minutes, silence fell over the car. However, the couple glanced at us in the rear view mirror often. They were as wary of us as we were of them. However, the man eventually spoke up.
“So, where you’s headin’?”
“Anywhere, really.”
“Just… tryin’ ta get away?” the woman prodded.
“You could say that,” I finally said.
The man chuckled. “I thought you were mute, little lady. Ya got a name?”
“Delilah,” I fibbed. “And this here’s Joseph… You?”
The man peered in the back, sending me a toothy grin. The woman copied. There was something uncanny and sinister in their faces. “Michael and Sarah.”
Arvin squeezed me. I could tell he was trying to fight off sleep. I was, too, but we knew better than to nap. Arvin was silently telling me to cut the conversation short. I did so, sending one last polite smile before placing my head on his shoulder.
Time passed; at some point, they had turned on the radio to some biblical song station. The sun had set a long time ago, and the moon barely surpassed the line of trees. The road was completely deserted. I almost wanted to let my guard down. I was tired, hungry, and exhausted, and I knew Arvin was, too. But his right hand never abandoned his thigh, always close to his pistol.
But if he was awake, couldn’t I get some shut eye?
I was beginning to drift into slumber. The God-worshipping songs reverberated in my head, serving as a lullaby…
“Hey, Sarah, pull over. I need to take a piss.”
I sat up immediately, warily eyeing the pair.
A minute passed, and she had yet to listen.
“Pul over, I say! Dammit, Sara, do ya expect me to piss out the window?” He peered back at us. “Y’all don’t mind, right?”
“No,” Arvin curtly replied.
“See, Sarah? Pull over, dammit.”
“Sure, David.”
Arvin and I noticed. His hand inched closer to his gun as ‘Sarah’ drove off road and pulled up to a lake. Arvin was tense. Before ‘Michael’ stepped out, though, Arvin suddenly stated, "My wife needs. To use the bathroom, too. Don’t ya, Delilah? Go on, now.”
“That’s the spirit,” Michael bellowed.
I gulped and slid over Arvin, stepping out of the car. I knew what he was doing. I didn’t question it for a second. While Michael sent me a gritty stare and marched over to the lake shore, I walked across the grass and went behind a tree. I placed my back against it, nails digging into the bark. One hand lingered on my plump stomach, rubbing it soothingly.
Bang. Bang.
The woman screamed and I heard ‘Michael’ collapse. I heard indistinct yelling, muffled by the metal skin of the car. My heart thumped erratically in my chest and I squeezed my eyes shut. Arvin would be okay. But what if the woman also had a gun? What if —
Two gunshots rang out at the same time.
I was paralyzed, my head connecting the dots.
And I waited.
I heard the car door open. A gun cocked. There was panting.
“Y/n, come on out, now.”
Relief washed over me and I dashed into the open again. Even though the scene was gruesome, the man’s body bleeding out on the grass and the woman’s brains blown against the windshield, I was ecstatic. I couldn’t believe I doubted Arvin for a moment.
I was about to greet him with a desperate hug, but that’s when I noticed. There was a bullet hole in his shirt.
He looked fine, though.
He noticed my terror and brought his hands to his shirt. He sent me a forced, lopsided grin. “‘Er gun was loaded with fake bullets or somethin’.”
“Oh, thank the lord,” I gasped.
We finally met in a hug. Arvin, luckily, wasn’t covered in blood. There were a few splatters on his face, but nothing a dip in the water couldn’t fix. I hummed happily, melting in his strong hold. For a moment, I forgot that he had just murdered two more not-so-innocent people.
But then, he released me. He wiped his hands on his pants, turning toward the scene. I gulped.
“What… do we do now?” I asked unsurely.
“I’m goin’ ta search ‘em,” he explained. “You get the suitcase. Let me do the honors, darlin’.”
As I watched him palm the dead man, I ducked in the back. I tried to keep from staring at the woman’s terrified face, grabbing the suitcase and pulling it out. A part of me wondering if they really were innocent. Just because they lied about their names…
“Y/n, come look.”
I wandered over, bending to see what he was holding.
In his grasp was a photo. It was the woman happily crouched beside a naked man who had a bullet right through his chest and forehead. He was pale and limp.
I could only assume that the man was the photographer.
“They weren’t good folk. Not at all,” he sighed in relief.
I licked my lips and moved away once more. I cast my stare away as he searched the woman and car. By the end of it, Arvin had pocketed a wad of cash and an extra pistol. We wordlessly began walking from the scene and returned to the road.
~~~
“Howdy.”
Arvin and I stepped out of the car. He had the suitcase, insisting that it wasn’t right that I was lugging it around. A genuinely kind stranger had given us a lift all the way to Arvin’s home town. We had just been let off outside a small convenient store, to which a scrawny old man greeted us from the porch.
‘I can’t explain it, Y/n. I just feel like I need to see that place one last time,’ he had confided while walked along the road.
And I wanted nothing more than to agree. I had let go of my past the moment I stepped on my mother’s wrist. And now Arvin was going to metaphorically step on his father’s.
I followed Arvin faithfully as he shoved a hand in his pocket.
The old man’s eyes were trained on us. “Ya look like ya’ve been travelin’.”
Arvin decided to stop and chat. He nodded his stiffly, shuffling his feet. I sent the man a small, wrapping my hand around his arm affectionately. “Yeah.”
“Where ya headin’?” he continued, clasping his hands together.
“There, uh, used to be a house on the hill over there. Some lawyer owned it. D’ya know it?”
“Sure I do. Up in the flats.”
“’s still there?”
He suddenly tapped his foot. “Well, I’ll be darned.” He paused momentarily. “You’re that Russell boy, ain’t ya?”
I peered down the road nervously while Arvin nodded. He broke contact with me, stepping closer. “Well, I just thought, since I was comin’ this way, I thought I’d stop by and see the old place.”
The man stood, shoving his hands into his overalls. He sighed, "Son, I hate to tell ya this, but that place burned down some years ago. They think some kids did it. There wasn’t nobody every livin’ there, since you folks.”
“W - well, I came all this way, figure I might as well walk up there anyways.”
“Sure.” The man waved his toward the hill. “Just cut across Clarence’s pasture. He won’t say nothin’.”
Arvin nodded to me and we began walking. I prodded beside him, but Arvin paused one last time.
“I never did thank ya for the night my dad died.”
He chuckled. “Well, you and your little lady can drop by for a meal after, why don’t ya?”
Arvin nodded, and a ghost of a smile tugged at his dimpled cheeks. “Will do.”
Arvin suddenly clasped my hand. We began up the hill, following a paved concrete road surrounded by wilderness. It was quiet, except for the chirping of birds. I smiled, too. All of this… was circling back to the beginning. Our hardest - and hopefully last - journey together started with mother nature, and with mother nature it would end.
Arvin knew where he was going like the back of his hand. He cut off from the main road and started hiking down a leafy trail around the side of the hill. Autumn had come, and not too soon. Our shoes crunched loudly. Arvin held my hand tightly, and his knuckled were deathly white.
“It’s pretty nice out here,” I spoke up, disrupting the silence.
Arvin sighed, nodded. “Yeah. ’T never was ta me, though.”
“Why?”
“You’ll see when we get there.”
We dodged a few trees, and Arvin switched the suitcase to the other hand, separating us. I followed only a few steps behind, focusing primarily on the euphoric effect of being in the woods once more. Even with everything that happened, in the woods, I could be free.
But I knew that this wouldn’t be for long. And soon, I’d have to retire my habit of being one with mother nature. I’d have a child and a husband who worked and loved me and I’d take care of the house and kid. I always dreaded becoming a meager housewife, but with Arvin… it was nothing short of heaven.
Arvin suddenly slowed, his gaze glued on the tree on front of us. There was a wooden cross tied to it, crumbled with age. Arvin tensed, but motioned us to go on. Questions bubbled in my throat, but my thoughts were silenced as we shoved through a hedge of dead trees.
He was set on his path. And I would do nothing but follow.
He stopped, and I crashed into him. But he didn’t budge, seemingly star struck by the sight in front of him. I peered over his shoulder, coming face to face with…. a shrine of some sort.
Arvin dropped the suitcase and reached over the log, rummaging through the leaves. He withdrew… bones.
He sat back and motioned for me to come forward. I hovered behind him, leaning so I could rub his shoulders.
“My dad killed our dog. I figured… I could give him a proper burial. We always prayed here. But God didn’t hear our prayers. God let mama die, if there even is a God. Mama got a proper burial. Dad did, too. But my poor dog,” he chuckled dryly, "he didn’t get nothin’.”
I gave his shoulders one last squeeze and carefully kneeled beside him. “Let’s give him a proper burial, then.”
I pulled at the dead leaves, digging a small hole with my hands. Arvin set the boys beside him and did the same until there was a pronounced but small hole. I sent him a reassuring smile, kissing his cheek before he lowered the bones into the hole.
Arvin smiled again, setting the skull in.
He suddenly looked at the sky as the sun shone down into the clearing.
“I understand now.”
I rubbed his back as he turned to me.
“My dad… he had no choice. No matter what, he had to go wherever ma did. And I can’t help but think if I was in the situation and ya… you know… I would do the same. I would do anything for ya, Y/n. I’ve already killed some bad guys. I’ve got blood on my hands. But as long as you’re with me, I don’t…”
I turned him to me and pressed a gentle kiss, willing all my love into it. He was silenced, and I knew all that I needed to. I understood him. And I couldn’t help but think that I would do the same, so long as my baby would be okay.
Suddenly, he pulled away, furrowing his brows. His jaw clenched and I went still too, fingers remaining on his neck. And that’s when we both heard it. The distant slapping of footsteps along leaves.
Arvin grabbed my wrist and immediately withdrew his gun. He pulled me to my feet and grabbed the suitcase. We marched further down the trail, trying to be as silent as possible. He stopped at a large, fallen tree. He ushered me toward it, and I realized what he meant.
While he tucked the suitcase along the base, I lay down, pressing my back the leaves beside tree as close as possible. There were large branches above me and Arvin lay beside me. He pulled me flush against my chest and had his arm strewn around my midsection. We were hidden from view, but he was also able to shoot if necessary.
The footsteps were getting closer.
“I know you’re down there somewhere. I just have some questions to ask you.”
Arvin peeked over the log.
Bang.
Just as a bird had chirped, a loud gunshot rang out, Arvin trembled and pressed himself back. I couldn’t help but start to tremble. Even with Arvin right beside me, it was hard to keep calm when he was just as frightened. He could try to seem composed, but it was right in his face.
He was scared.
“Sorry about that,” the officer shouted. “A goddamn bird scared me. I ain’t here to hurt you. And I know that you don’t want to hurt me.” The voice was getting closer, but gained no distance. The man had paused. “Come on out so we can have us a talk.”
The man continued to progress. Arvin’s forehead glistened with sweat and hair stuck to his forehead. I squeezed my eyes shut, rubbing my swollen belly. Arvin’s knuckles were ghostly as he held the pistol, hand trembling. I felt his labored, yet silent, breath against my neck.
He took in one last breath. “Put the gun down, officer! My wife is here and she is with child!”
The footsteps grew closer. I gulped, rubbing my stomach further.
“Can’t do that son,” he replied.
“I’ve got this gun pointed right at you!” Arvin’s voice was higher pitched than usual. “Just set it on the ground and walk away. I don’t want ta have to shoot ya!”
“What?”
“Just set it down!”
His pace quickened. I shut my eyes tightly. Whatever was going to happen, I couldn’t watch.
“I promise ya, officer, those people I killed weren’t no good — the - the priest raped my wife and many other innocent women. And that couple was trying to kill us like they did everyone else they picked up!”
The footsteps kept drawing nearer. Suddenly, though, they stopped. Arvin, sensing his closeness, propped himself up on his elbow. I sent him one last fearful glance, but his attention was fully on the environment. The gun was poised, ready to shoot. So I… just stared at the sky.
Yes. The sky was pretty. The sky was nice.
“Them people, especially that couple weren’t no good, sheriff —“
Suddenly, a gunshot echoed. It hit the tree bark, and a scream bubbled in my throat. Arvin began shooting, and at what and where I couldn’t say. The air was riddled with bullets shooting back and forth, and all I could do was pray that mother nature was protecting us.
Suddenly, one side ceased fire. And it wasn’t our’s.
I let out a gasp of relief. Tears stung my cheeks and Arvin and I shared a glance. He sat up, panting. He nodded to me, tossing the gun on the ground grabbing my arm.
I sat up as well. I let out a jolt as I noticed the corpse on the ground. It was an officer with a shaved head and a dyed red shirt. He was still breathing, and his fingers where twitching. But he was going to die none the less.
Arvin rose to his feet. He stepped over the log toward the dying man. He was entranced. The man’s gaze was glued to him, seemingly dazed. I stood, too, grabbing the suitcase. The man and I made eye contact, and I could tell he was eying my stomach. As Arvin hovered over him, the man let out one final breath and passed.
I walked behind Arvin and wrapped my arms around his waist. He was still breathing shakily.
“No… no more of this,” he stated. “We’re goin’ ta have a good life, Y/n. One without any death and decay and… this. We’re goin’ ta have a house with a beautiful baby in a cabin in the woods. And we’re goin’ ta be happy.”
“We are, Arvin. We are.”
“How… how does Cincinnati sound?”
