Right now I’m at my residency in Lethbridge Alberta.

Im about halfway through, and it’s been an incredibly productive time.

Being from British Colombia, everyone looked at me with a lot of shock and confusion when I said I would be heading to Alberta for the month, it’s not really a place that’s well loved where I’m from.

I have been pleasantly surprised by this prairie city. The art scene here is alive and well. People are friendly and happy to chat about your art.

I still have some galleries and art I want to see with my time here. Which I will be talking more about on my TikTok.

Anna Vovan ist zu Gast im Fotolabor des Klub Solitaer. Die Werksattresidenz wird eingeleitet von der Werkschau Letters (slid under a door). Darin untersucht die Leipziger Künstlerin die Rolle der Sprache als Vermittlerin zwischen innerer und äußerer Realität. Ihr Interesse gilt dem Moment, in dem zwischenmenschliche Kommunikation misslingt und sich eine Lücke zwischen Sprechen und Verstehen, Denken und Sagen auftut. In diesem Zwischenraum sind ihre Arbeiten verortet. Sie nutzt experimentelle fotografische Techniken wie Fotogramme oder Lumenprints, um in Bildern dem Vorsprachlichen und Nichtsagbaren habhaft zu werden.

Die titelgebende Arbeit Letters (slid under a door) besteht aus analogen Fotopapieren, die wie Briefe zur Hälfte durch den Spalt unter einer Tür hindurch geschoben und mit dem vorhandenen Licht belichtet wurden. In diesen zu Briefen gewordenen Fotogrammen lösen sich Sprache und Text im Bild in Licht und Stimmung auf.

Anna Vovan (*1980 in Ettenheim) lebt und arbeitet in Leipzig. Sie studierte Fotografie an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig und der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien. Seit 2012 ist sie Mitglied der Produzent*innengalerie Galerie b2_in Leipzig. Ihre Arbeiten wurden unter anderem in der Spriten Kunsthall Skien (NOR), der Gfzk Leipzig, dem Kunsthaus Potsdam und dem Kunsthaus Baselland ausgestellt. 2023 erhält sie das NEUSTARTplus Arbeistsstipendium der Stiftung Kunstfonds.

Residenz und Ausstellung werden gefördert durch den Kulturbetrieb der Stadt Chemnitz.

Here's a little more about the project: The latest installation in the Moody Project Wall series, "_____ as Myth," led by Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, offers a community-centered exhibition that explores mythology as a catalyst for self-discovery and social commentary. Taking inspiration from Mouton’s memoir Black Chameleon, the artwork on view is a result of students and local artists investigating how modern-day mythology can explain the nuances of our everyday experiences. Through her residency at Rice University’s Center for Engaged Research and Collaborative Learning (CERCL), Mouton led students through community workshops to write new myths based on their own experiences. Those stories then became source material for local and regional artists to create the artworks that comprise the exhibition, "______ as Myth." Mouton's book, Black Chameleon, explains the Black American Women’s experience through exploring idioms like “How we got eyes in the back of our heads” and examining colloquial figures like Boo Boo the Fool. The student's work likewise reflects a broad investigation into lived experiences but with a much wider range of personal histories. "The diversity of voices and backgrounds makes the storytelling richer," said Mouton. "It shows we're all capable of filling in the gaps of our own mythology."
