May Review: The Great Race (1965)
May Review: The Great Race (1965)
“Push the button, Max!”
– Professor Fate, usually before a catastrophe of his doing strikes
To say things have gotten tumultuous since the last review would be a gross understatement. But we’re not here to discuss today’s upheavals, important as they are. Let’s just take a moment to reflect and laugh. Lord knows we could use a good one right now.
Directed by esteemed comedy director and Hollywood…

ANYONE FOR HEAD TENNIS?
Manchester United in the Far East, 1975: Tommy Docherty had signed a deal for his leading stars to participate in a Hong Kong head tennis tournament without consulting them first. Macari, Coppell et al quite literally refused to play ball. The furious Doc, having asked younger pros like Jimmy Nicholl and Arthur Albiston to vacate the room sharpish, viciously lambasted each senior player in a clear-the-air meeting that evening while swigging on a full bottle of whisky
ROMFORD PELE GOES CRACKERS
Arsenal in Hong Kong, 1995: Tony Adams, Ray Parlour and Chris Kiwomya indulged in a “session” at the Hard Rock Cafe. Many hours later, Parlour attempted to politely gain a cabbie’s attention by lobbing a bag of prawn crackers into the open bonnet of his taxi. The furious Lai Pak Yan chased him down the road with a wooden club. In a Hong Kong courtroom, Adams and Kiwomya admitted they’d been too blottoed to remember anything.
TV AND BED IN THE POOL
Sheffield United in Tenerife, 1992: At the end of day one, after the Blades’ draw with Tenerife, 14 players had been asked to leave the establishment after ‘mooning’ the other guests. The rest of the squad was also banished when they indulged in a spot of Keith Moon-style room trashing. “At one point, a TV and a bed ended up in the pool,” revealed the appalled hotel manager. “And when I complained to the players, I went in as well.”
YOU'VE SEEN ONE WALL...
West Brom in China, 1978: As well as midfielder John Trewick’s famous quote (“When you've seen one wall, you've seen 'em all”), players moaned about the food (“we had lamb chops for breakfast”), replaced the Chinese flag with a pair of underpants at the team hotel after a game of cricket and complained that they’d rather have gone somewhere else – in Bryan Robson’s case, Alicante.
POMPEY FEEL THE HEAT
Portsmouth in the USA, 2010: This wasn't their year. After administration and relegation, they were thrashed 4-0 at the hands of DC United, having had to borrow kit as their luggage went astray after a lightning storm-affected 27-hour trip. Boss Steve Cotterill was forced to take several youth players due to injuries; against DC, two more were subbed after colliding with one another, while three others received treatment for heat exhaustion.
