"You always have a way of sneaking into people's hearts." - Amity Blight (The Owl House)

One of the many things I love about Disney's The Owl House is how it handles its relationships.

The show's writers make a very proactive effort to demonstrate that relationships, be it dating, family or friends isn't something that just happens instantly. There are gradual developments towards authentic meaningful connections. And I think this is such a good lesson to have in a family show like this.

Our modern culture has, for many reasons, created a streamlined approach to how to commit to the people around us. We are expected to love someone instantly and move on as soon as it fades. So many movies, tv shows and books have a revolving door of romantic interests moving past the main characters that we often take on this idea of people being disposable.

Now, to clarify, there is absolutely nothing wrong with having a wide range of people and experiences in your social and dating life, in fact, it's a healthy thing. But the point of difference here that I think Own House shows well is that it takes time to actually know someone, and we need to allow for that to happen naturally.

Amity starts the show as your typical high school bully. She is the top student, and she makes no effort to hide her boss-level abilities in an effort to show how untouchable she is. However, we start to learn that Amity isn't just a prodigy in her magical stream, but that shes also a nerd, who loves comic books, who volunteers at the library...and is someone who has a lot of pressure in her home life.

Luz, the carefree, wonder-filled geek who has stumbled into Amity's world brings a positive light to everything she interacts with. And even though Luz has her own set of trauma, and is learning to accept herself for who she is, she makes every effort to connect with others..

Luz and Amity are a ship that the show allows to have time. It's a slow building of common ground mixed with shyness about how the other makes them feel. They are a couple that you want to see come together and it's extremely satisfying when it finally happens.

The beauty of this, especially being in the context of one of Disney's earliest same-gendered relationships, is that it comes across extremely naturally. These are two people who found each other, and it makes all the sense in the world that they would also have a please in each other's hearts.
