Uruk — Âme: Live at Artacts (Trost)

Ame - Live at Artacts by URUK

The Sumerian city of Uruk arose sometime around 4000 BC, and its site was inhabited continually until around 700 AD. But the quartet Uruk sounds even more ancient, positively prehistoric in its non-linguistic, primal heaviness. 

The quartet was assembled from two pre-existing duos. European singer/clarinetist Isabelle Duthoit and quarter tone trumpeter Franz Hautzinger are masters of extended techniques on all of their instruments. American percussionists Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake are both celebrated improvisers, and their winter solstice concerts have been a Chicago tradition since 1990. The four musicians joined forces for a tour of Europe in March 2020, during which they made this concert recording.

While Zerang and Drake are both masters of the trap kit, on this night they confined themselves to hand drums and bells. As they switch between drums and patterns, their rhythms are in constant evolution, evoking a pre-dawn mist of chiming tones one moment and a fireside ceremony the next. Duthoit represents still earlier phases in evolution, shifting between feral panting, back of the throat growls and pterodactyl-worthy cries. It’s easy to miss the moments when she switches to clarinet, so close are her reed sounds to those of her voice. Hautzinger’s sense of time is positively geological, blowing like the harsh winds that scoured the planet before heartbeats first beat. There are moments when the group’s name seems like an invocation of the future, not some distant past. 

But Hautzinger also picks up on the personal history of the percussionists, and especially Drake, who sustained a close connection with Don Cherry. Muted and tuneful, he parts the curtain of suspended chimes and rides some rolling, frame drum beats straight into the world-jazz corner of town where Cherry could have been the mayor, if only he hadn’t been out of town so much, scouting out the rest of the globe. In other hands, these 20th century vibes might feel nostalgic. But stirred into Uruk’s era-spanning mix, they cast aspersions on linear concepts of time, making music unmoored from such limiting notions as hear and now.

🌷 Taking care of living things - hmmm… I would give her a 9 for plants, an 8 for animals, and a 7 for children. They’re.. pretty high scores.

Yara does have something of a green thumb and I’d like to think she only goes deeper into studying flora with more accessible herbs being available in Ferelden and later, Antiva. Her first interest came with poisons and antidotes, and it ended up sticking around as she’d need to know the few available medicinal plants well enough to remedy both the blight and other illnesses, be they injury caused or otherwise. And she has a real soft spot for flowers 🌻

When it comes to animals, she’s also pretty good, and gets along with most, as their communication is easier for her to understand than people’s. She also spoils Mishka rotten. While on the ✨road trip✨ through Ferelden, she ends up treating most animals as neighbors, which has ranged from endearing to deeply worrying for her companions, because while it’s cute to keep a chipmunk around camp, going in for a swim with a bear is a little less so.

She’s also the kind of person who can stay still for so long moss starts growing she gets birds and squirrels perching up on her shoulders. Shale disapproves. Yara wishes she were a golem sometimes. Often.

The negative that comes with animals tends to be the fact that they can be very loud, and Yara has some difficulty handling some sounds. The same actually goes for children as well, and while she gets along well enough with kids she just cannot handle the crying. As soon as things get too loud, she ends up shutting down.

🏊 Swimming - I think I’d give her a 6. Yara won’t drown in a body of water and is decent overall - she’s had to cross bodies of water before and the such, and enjoys swimming - but she’s not winning any swimming competitions anytime soon, and her technique is mediocre at best.
