Title: Outside the Manor

This is my DPxDC Steven Universe style piece I did for a game in the @haunting-heroes-creative-games server! Hosted by @noir-renard, we played Guess the Artist: Through the Screen. I had so much fun drawing the manor (and the low quality Danny lol), and it took me a total of 7 hours and 3 minutes.

So this is in the Steven Universe style but I don't think this is in the Steven Universe world if that makes sense. I do think that art/fics in that universe would be cool, but that for sure wasn't what I was going for here.

A lot of people interpreted this as Danny being sad, hesitant to go inside. And honestly? I love that interpretation! I had no thoughts about it other than, "Okay Wayne Manor and ... let's have Danny floating outside of it!" So any interpretation of this art piece is valid and a great one because I just wanted to draw an architectural piece and have a lil Danny there as a treat to myself.

I looked at a lot of Steven Universe background's and some low quality Steven's for reference on the trees, building, and color choices. I don't remember which version of the Manor I looked at specifically, but I do remember that I looked up "Wayne Manor" for the architectural decisions.

Asked partner what he thinks art is (bc I'm trying to motivate myself to do my weekly philosophy reading) and as usual he drops a bomb-ass answer after just a few seconds of thinking.

Something like "You know how even the most ordinary sounds can be reminiscent of music? Like how if I knock this empty plastic bottle over, it'll create a rhythm that we might recognize as music in a way. I think it's the same with other art as well. Anything becomes art when someone experiences it as such"

Comment on a ‘Restless’ reaction by Ward 3015: “Domi, you're right to be confounded. That's the appropriate response to Restless. Watching your reaction reminded me of how hyped I was for this season finale when it originally aired and the letdown of being served pretentious artsy drivel and cheese slices. If an episode is truly great, shouldn't that realization happen on first viewing? I call BS if fully appreciating it ultimately requires years, multiple rewatches, and/or the coaxing of a vocal faction of Buffyphiles. To me, fans who gush over this one are a lot like wannabe highbrow intellectuals musing over the complexities and meaning of paint splatters on a canvas. Dreams, foreshadowing, and nonsense will always make a poor substitute for straightforward coherent storytelling.

My response: “If an episode is truly great, shouldn’t that realization happen on a first viewing?”

No, not necessarily. The thing about art is that it can be interpreted according to the way you see it and the way you see it changes with each time you watch and interact with it.

There’s a mantra I use: “You never see anything that is not already within your own consciousness.”

Meaning that art is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone will have their own interpretation. It’s just that interpretation depends on your level of consciousness - what you’ve experienced and observed to further understand, relate to and resonate with it. And that won’t happen all at once. If it does - then you possess some type of superconsciousness whereby you can know and understand your entire life’s journey in one singular moment. And not even the greatest of intellectuals nor the wisest among us possess that level of mental capacity and spiritual enlightenment. You’re not steering the wheel, you’re just along for the ride. And ‘Restless’ is masterful writing in that way. Perhaps it was never intended to be as insightful as it is - but then that just proves my point. Humans grow into their perception and innate understanding.

There are countless studies of ‘Restless’. Some professional college-level theses have been written about it that can’t simply be waved away as wannabe highbrow intellectualism. If there is little meaning to it to begin with, then one thing’s for sure, the meaning is created by every observer of it every time they observe it. Any modern piece of art that is put on a pedestal for it’s depth of substance is on that pedestal because human consciousness is complex. Do you think people visit the Mona Lisa because of Leonardo da Vinci’s vision? No, they pay what they do to go see it themselves to create their own. All long lasting art is never truly finished because people keep painting it for their own.

You could argue that ‘Restless’ is one of those timeless pieces of art. It never ends because what it means is continuously being created. If that is just paint splatters on a canvass for you then that’s valid. But for many others - it’s a masterpiece in the making that they themselves don’t realize they’re holding the brush to in continuously watching it and talking about it. For me, it is my favourite episode of Buffy of all because of this very reason - not because I think Whedon possessed some type of superconsciousness. I very much think he himself would be surprised by what it’s become and by how high people hold it up as some of the greatest TV show-making of all-time.
