hey guys, any art degree students here? 👋🏼
I’d like to share something with you, for those who want to listen. I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about looking down on art degrees. It makes me happy that I saw my type of people defending arts but some science people just won’t listen. I even once saw a posts applauding people who gave up arts to pursue a practical career. And the comments there saddened me. It’s filled with stories of struggles of abandoning your passion just to fit with what society demands. It is said that “art doesn’t make you money.” and choosing a science degree is a wiser choice. But some people just exists to make it an excuse to make art students miserable.
Each art student got their stories. People say hurtful words to them, intentionally or not, mine is:
“You won’t move forward like that.”
“You can’t live with that.”
“Philosophy? What would you even do with that degree.”
Sometimes, my dad will even introduce me as a STEM student… But I speak up right away, and those people always ask me why i didn’t take stem as a career path. Sometimes, a lot of times, I would cry in my room. I’ll think of whys. I’ll think that they’re right. But at the end of the day, I’ll think that art is the one and only that likes my company. And so I’ll stand with art, as I have known from the moment colors bursts through my eyes.
I almost wouldn’t like to share this as I found this deeply personal but I guess I’ll give you a glimpse of what people say to me from time to time. Feel free to tell your story too in a reblog. Let’s reach those who look down at us and show them that art is something beautiful.

A few doodles I found in a sketchbook from an art class in university when I was getting my art degree. I recall a classmate seeing them and telling me I should keep drawing them; Hannah, if you're out there, I hope you're doing well :)
The quotes around the ladies are one Tumblr-found, Modest Mouse, and Modest Mouse, respectively, with a little bit of The Dodos on the sides 🎵

I got my degree in the mail today....
It feels so weird to be holding it..
I didn't think I'd even be alive to see 23..
Let alone having a degree I paid for and earned myself ...

I'm honestly starting to worry that I'm choosing the wrong career path in art, but I don't know what else to do because it's the only thing I'm good at besides writing. I'd love to be either a writer or artist, but I'm already racking up student debt and if I can't get a good paying job (or suddenly win the lottery 🤞) I'll be stuck with that debt the rest of my life and end up drowning in it and never be able to afford a house or apartment or anything and I seriously think I'm spiraling right now and all I want to do is cry.

The most horrifying aspect of parents saying "my kid could do that" about art is that they never ever ever mean "wow my kid is good enough to be in a museum" and they always always always mean "I want to disrespect you so much I'll do it by implying that this thing is just as worthless as the things my child makes with their hands" and right in front of them too. Your kids can hear you u know, and the things they make with their hands are the least worthless and most precious aspects of human life I'll kill u

I have so much respect for people who pursue a degree in the arts (especially painting and drawing because I relate but all others too) because i have a deep want to be good at these things that I love but my loathing being told what to do trumps that want 10-1
