Judging a Book By Its Cover The Shambling Guide to New York City

Zoe Norris is looking for a fresh start in New York City. She’s found a seemingly perfect position as a travel book editor, but there is one thing holding her back- being human.

Zoe isn’t going to let anyone- not even her blood-drinking boss or her death goddess coworker put her off from delving deep into the monster underworld. But her job, not to mention her life, might be in peril when the line between monster and human starts to crumble… with Zoe right in the middle.

Fun fact, I love fantasy. I write it, I read it, and I watch it. I don’t do a lot of urban fantasy, but not for lack of care. So I was pretty intrigued by this book when my mom and grandmother got it for me. My enthusiasm faded, however, with one phrase. “[…]but there is one thing holding her back- being human.”

I hate Twilight. Never hidden that fact, but it may not have shown up on here as often as some would think. There’s many reasons I hate that book, the abuse, the lack of plot, the wasted potential, the flat out bad writing. However, one thing I hate is the over the top anti human sentiments. Humanity isn’t a problem, nor will it ever be (and stop dissing humanity when your reADERS ARE HUMAN, LIKE, COME ON!) So, yes, presenting the main character’s humanity as a problem and holding her back makes me go “err, what?”

The summary doesn’t alieve my worries. The main character clearly decides to investigate deeper into the fantastical side of this world, which can be for various reasons, but is often because they think humans are “weak” in comparison to fantastical beings. The reviews do not help, with one referring to the clearly urban fantasy novel as science fiction and another needing to degrade a cult classic. (Specifically, if Buffy the Vampire Slayer got therapy for her violent tendencies and got a real job, she'd be this girl.)

The cover art is interesting and definitely let's readers know that this is urban fantasy. A dragon flies around the top of the Empire State Building, a tailed man walks down the street, and a small being perches on the edge of a trashcan as he bites into an apple. The city stretches out behind the people, which includes who I can only assume is our main character. I like the way the cover looks normal at first glance until you look closer. Perhaps a commentary on the novel's setting?

Still, this is just my impression going into the book. I prefer to be upfront with my thoughts about whatever I’m review/liveblogging before going in. I still hope that this book will be a good novel, so fingers crossed.
