Idk if it applies exactly but I think it does?
You know how in some cultures, as soon as you maybe graduate school or uni, your parents will reveal you have a marriage proposal.
I'm still mad about that.
Dude.
I was lonely for YEARS.
No friends. I think I cried.
If you have the resources to get me someone around my age, someone I've never met or heard of, to marry as soon as I've graduated.
Then you always had the resources to get me a friend.
And you didn't.
I had no one my age, no one in my family, no cousins, I'm always alone at family gatherings.
You couldn't have used your connections to get me a friend my age? Someone I actually wanted and needed?
I'm still mad.
I could've had a friend.
Parents need to stop matchmaking for spouses and start for friends.
I'm just so angry whenever I remember that.

wild to think that in the book, jace was betrothed to baela since he was four and she was two 😬 and then, following the death of laenor and laena in 120, daemon moved to dragonstone with his daughters (as in book baela didn't live with her grandmother)
but as soon as he left his home without a single family member, it was rumoured he married/fell in love with a girl out of his kin
this guy was not very much into 1ncest, as people like to claim, even in their family it was common practice, i bet some of targs definitely found it odd to intermarry with relatives
You're not wrong, anon. I also find it troubling that the writers downplay or romanticize the impact of fixed marriages and Targaryen incest on the Blacks side. Meanwhile, all that chaos is being explored on the Greens side to make them look 'bad' for not going with the flow and saying yes to absolutely everything (like the Velaryons, Baela and Rhaena do).
Would've been much more interesting to explore the conflict of duty vs desire on not only Jace but also Rhaena. Rhaena went ahead to pick husbands that the court disagreed with. That's an interesting aspect to her character that they slept on.

Echo is standing in the hallway, bristling, demanding: “Where have you been? I thought you and Octavia would be bonding for sure.”
“She went shopping,” he says, annoyed with Echo’s intrusion.
Echo’s mouth falls open. “You let a fifteen year old girl go shopping by herself in the city?”
He rubs his forehead, gives a little sigh, admits the truth. “She went with Clarke, and her friend, Raven. To shop for a dress, for Saturday.”
“But–I texted her. I told her I was coming over. So we could look at some ideas I had for bridesmaids’ dresses.”

How does Castelon enforce the ban on arranged marriage?
The Oracle has a special group of disciples dedicated to enforcing certain royal laws or creeds. Obviously, one way is that people can report others, and then it gets investigated.
To be married in Castelon, you must have an Oracle or one of their disciples perform it. This allows oversight. Eloping would be VERY difficult and almost impossible. When Castelonians want to get married, they have to go through a waiting process while the disciples work to verify the legitimacy of the relationship. During this process, each person is separately interviewed by the disciples. If there are inconsistencies or other tells, this raises flags. But often, during this process, since the person is safe with the disciples, they would speak up and admit they are being forced into an arranged marriage or share whatever relevant information. Because the disciples and Castelon have a reputation for protecting those who speak up, most do.
Now, there are obviously ways around it, but no process is perfect. People can go to other countries or attempt bribes, etc. However, Castelon's creed allows prosecution even after the marriage has happened. It's not just there to prevent it.
Good question, thanks for the ask!!

I have such a soft spot for people in arranged marriages/marriages of convenience falling in love with their stepkids before they fall in love with their partners (and the marriage moving from one of convenience to one of respect/potential love from seeing how good their spouses are with their kids!)

Elena has only ever heard of negativity surrounding her alleged spouse. How he’s not of noble birth and that her grandmother, Tatia Petrova scammed the entire family for arranging such a marriage partner unbefitting of their royal status as Monarchs of the United States of America.
She slips on her robe, shuffling to the bathroom to wash her face.
“Marriage.” Rebekah’s voice starts out strained, as if she could not fully grasp her thoughts. “So who is the lucky guy then?”
Elena throws a towel over her shoulder, smearing a generous amount of mint toothpaste on the cheap hotel toothbrush and shrugs, “I don’t know who he is.” She watches the rumpled sheets pool at Rebekah’s waist, revealing a set of swollen, perky nipples. She fights the temptation to return back to bed and bury her mouth in the other woman’s breasts.
“This is it then.” Rebekah turns her polished nails in a circular motion, face set in a ridiculous frown.
For us. Elena catches the implication without a need to spell it out loud. She turns back to the sink, spitting the bubbly substance down the drain and wiping the remains with a towel. There is a knock at the door, three sharp rasps indicating her parcel of clothes would be behind the door.
The tension is high in the air as she opens the door to scoop the paperbag in her arm, proceeding to change into the nondescript clothing. Rebekah’s offended scoff rings through the empty room.
“You are cruel.”
Elena zips the hoodie close, eyes trailed on her partner’s fury. “I am the nation’s Crown Princess.” Is what she says in response, crackling in the air. She wears her mask perfectly, just as expected of the next heir to the throne.
“Would it have been different if I was born a noble?” A beat passes. Elena holds the door open, observing the constellation of tears dotting Rebekah’s cheeks. Finn quietly procures the bag in her hand, standing upright next to the opened door, invisible to Rebekah’s eye. She catches his gaze, lowering her head in a frequent gesture.
‘Take care of this for me, yeah?’
Finn nods, stepping out in the light to take Elena’s place.
The door closes.
Elena climbs in the car, leaning her head against the window to wait for Finn to be done with his business. She plugs her phone back on, revealing a handful of calls from both her mother and father and scrolls down to the edge of her contact list, blocking Rebekah’s number and deleting their conversation.
Finn’s back for no more than 3 minutes later, still pristine looking. Not a single hair out of place and no scratches. She throws the first aid kick at the back as Finn climbs in the driver's seat.
“I take it went well?”
He rolled his eyes, starting the engine, “She had many demands, Your Highness.”
“Nothing that would damage the Royal Treasury?”
Finn is silent as he drives away from the hotel. Elena snorts, propping her feet above the glove compartment.

Thinking about fantasy arranged marriages after a post I saw a while back about medieval arranged marriages that I can no longer find.
Content Warning: discussion of consensual consumption of love potions
Like, we all agree that the concept of love potions is pretty fraught with troubling elements, right? But consider this: consensual consumption of love potions is a very interesting option to put in the political marriage toolbox. "This marriage is good for my country, I can make it good for me, and I can ensure I don't get fucked over via the mutual guarantee of emotional investment."
Like, if you are a noble marrying off one of your children for political reasons, doesn't hooking them up with love potions seem like an obviously compassionate thing to do for their emotional well-being? How does that change society? Is the consumption part of the wedding ceremony? Do noble relationships become symbolic of unbreakable bonds? Are noble relationships viewed as inherently manipulative and/or disingenuous? Are noble relationships associated with magic directly? How many young peasants are (perhaps unwisely) busting out lines like "I love you like a queen loves her king"? Are love potions within the means of the peasantry? Is the social context significantly different if so? How does the existence of the option change the perception of noble couples that did not want and/or need artificial intervention in their emotions? Is there a kingdom where its citizens are just hyped as fuck for their political leaders being in Real Actual Love? How strong is the effect? Are these like "I have a bit of a crush now" potions, "I am in love, but not irresistibly so" potions, "I would do anything for the sake of this person" potions, etc? Does it vary, and if so, which one is the widely-accepted best choice? Why? Modern understanding of romance and sexuality begs the question - does a love potion do fuck all for your sex life? Like, does this result in just piles of nobles in deeply loving and purely platonic relationships because they simply are not each other's type?

“Open it,” Rhaenyra went first, gesturing at the dust covered object on the bed.
Rhaena eagerly obliged. Her fingers rummaged the covers open until the present beneath emerged: an off-shoulder crimson dress speckled with gold and with fine, long sleeves that cascaded like a waterfall, cut down the middle to expose arm skin.
“It’s gorgeous, Princess!”
As she held the dress up, the molten gold hues of the sun set it on fire. The waist and bust of the dress had also been adjusted perfectly to Rhaena’s body measurements.
“I wore it many years ago to my courtship with your uncle Laenor,” Rhaenyra said. “We weren’t blessed with daughters but he always had you and Baela. The dress belongs to you now.”
Rhaena knew little of her Uncle Laenor except through tales of his victories at battles and his death: a daring knight that was slain in his family home by a dejected lover.
The first and last time she laid eyes on him was on the day of Mother’s funeral. Upon being introduced to Rhaena and Baela he had broken down into tears and said nothing more to them afterwards, but even so Rhaena was certain he was a good man.
“You must miss him terribly,” she remarked, putting the dress aside to make room for the Princess to join her on her bed.
“Laenor was a true friend,” Rhaenyra sighed, sitting down. “Almost like a brother. Just like Luke and you, in fact. Tighter than thieves.”
“I see,” Rhaena swallowed.
She had feared a time like this would come. With the upcoming slew of betrothals and weddings as political allegiances shifted, Rhaenyra was going to bring up Lucerys one way or another.

Don't do that to the one and only baby girl. He deserves a happy ending, the man did all he could.
