Marvel character Gwendolyn “Gwen” Poole aka Gwenpool has been confirmed aromantic and asexual!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gwenpool will come to terms with her sexuality in next week’s issue of Love Unlimited: Gwenpool, her current series which is made by an acespec creative team.
Acespec creators Jeremy Whitley @jeremywhitley, Bailie Rosenlund @bailiesartblog, Kelly Fitzpatrick, Alanna Smith @alannawrites and Kaitlyn Lindtvedt discuss Gwenpool’s asexuality and aromanticism in this new interview for Marvel.
It’s a really great interview, highly recommend reading it!
“Acespec people aren’t often shown in media and when they are, it’s often shown as a trope of being a broken thing that needs fixing. The more diversity and stories we can tell, the better.” -Kelly Fitzpatrick
Tumblr media
Love Unlimited: Gwenpool is available now from Marvel Unlimited. The concluding issue of this 6 part limited series will be out next week.
Tumblr media
Check out this reading list for Gwenpool if you’d like to read more of her comics!
Gwenpool is the second Marvel character to be confirmed asexual this year, although she will be the first to have her asexuality shown on-page.
Morgan Red was confirmed asexual back in March and his asexuality will be addressed in New Mutants Lethal Legion #5, out in July.

Okay so, since I didn't post any art on Aro Week (though I will be finishing the drawing I was doing), I'm gonna do some (very late) aro character text posting, talking about their identities.
Ft. a couple new characters and some new versions of old characters that I haven't reintroduced yet. Also including their ages to show the variety there.
--
Lev (he/him; early to mid 40s): bi aroace; sex-averse, but fine with romance; has flirted with people, gone on dates, kissed, etc; not opposed to eventually having a life partner.
Miguel (he/him; early to mid 50s): aroace; indifferent to both romance and sex; got married in his early 20s and had a kid with his wife, but they later divorced on good terms and are still friends; has since remained single.
Rufus (he/him; mid to late 50s): gay demiromantic ace; if he didn't have a partner, he was open to going on dates with people he wasn't attracted to if they seemed like they could be compatible; in present day he's married and has kids.
Howie (he/him; 16 y/o): poly aroacespec; unsure what kind of partnership he wants, is open to experimenting.
Angelo (he/him; 16 y/o): gay demirose (demi aroace); unsure what kind of partnership he wants, is open to experimenting.
Willow (they/them, he/him; 15-16 y/o): aro(spec) lesbian; romance-favorable; open to dating.
Zain (he/him; mid 20s): aromantic and either allosexual or acespec (but not strictly ace); friends, roommates and possibly fwbs with Harley.
Harley (they/them, ze/zir; mid 20s): aromantic bisexual, possibly non-partnering; friends, roommates and possibly fwbs with Zain.
Bridget (she/her; 50s): aromantic, doesn't really use other labels; romance-indifferent; close friends, roommates and sometimes fwbs with Darya.
Darya (she/her; 50s): pan grayromantic allosexual; romance-indifferent; close friends, roommates and sometimes fwbs with Bridget.
Debora (she/her; early 20s): lesbian oriented aroace; romance-averse but sex-indifferent; in a QPR with Erica.
Erica (she/her; early 20s): aromantic omnisexual; romance-indifferent; in a QPR with Debi.
Tristen (she/her; 30s): caedaroace; averse to both romance and sex; the only one on this list who is aspec due to trauma.

My aro Pidge manifesto:
Pidge is the only one of the main paladins that never shows either implied or explicit sexual/romantic feelings. Shiro canonically had a fiancé (refuse to acknowledge that endcard), Keith is teased romantically with Acxa in the later seasons, and he has several scenes with Lance throughout the latter half of season 1 and in seasons 2-3, that can be very easily interpreted as romantic. Lance is canonically attracted to women. He enters a romantic relationship with Allura (though that was horribly done) and has several scenes with Keith that can be read romantically in the first three seasons. Allura canonically enters a romantic relationship with Lance, and shows clear romantic feelings for Lotor throughout seasons five and six. Hunk canonically has feelings for and enters a romantic relationship with Shay. Pidge never brings up romance, and seems disgusted the only time it is ever brought up in their presence. (Sam mentions meeting Pidge’s mom over a modulating argument in Season 6(?))
Pidge is the Paladin of the Green Lion, the Guardian Spirit of Nature. They have an entire episode devoted to their relationship with plants and the Green Lion. (The season 2 episode Greening the Cube) Plants reproduce asexually, and have no concept of ‘mating’ or ‘romance’, unlike most animals. Aro/ace spec people often use plant motifs to represent them, as in most animals there’s the idea of ‘base instincts’ or whatever that’s always about sex.
Pidge is also continually associated with the colors green, white, gray, and black, which are the colors of the aromantic flag. Green is, of course, the color of their Lion, white is featured prominently on both their lion, armor, and casual clothes. Grey is the color of all of Pidge’s self-made tech, (notably distinct from white Altean tech) and they wear gray shorts in their non-paladin outfit. Pidge has a black cloak that they occasionally wear (the ONLY paladin to have any additional non-uniform clothes until the last seasons) and their Lion has a black shield on its back. No other lions have anything similar outside of when they form Voltron.
Pidge is the resident computer genius of Voltron, who understands robots, coding, and technology. They create machines and algorithms throughout the show, and they never seem to consider robots as less than organic beings. These are character traits that, in sci-fi, are almost always associated with robot or ai characters. Said characters are some of the only consistent examples of aromantic/asexual representation available.
Pidge’s arc also exists entirely outside romance, and is allowed to have friendships with male characters without it every being colored as romantic or sexual in nature, something exceedingly rare for an afab character that is textually alloromantic/sexual. (One reason I dislike people who ship Pidge with other characters). When Pidge’s arc with finding their family is resolved, romance is still never presented as an option.
Pidge very much looks like “the typical ace/aro” in that they are teenage, AFAB, skinny and white. This is a stereotype, obviously, but Voltron was never above using those.
Finally, this is purely me, but Pidge is the most androgynous-presenting of all the main Voltron characters, and I’ve noticed that a lot of aro spec people often tend towards gnc or androgynous presentation.
On their own, most of these things could be waved off, but it’s very weird when you put them all together. For a show with as many romantic jokes, subplots, and relationships as Voltron, Pidge being entirely left out feels intentional.

He returns to the tangible world as the chilliness of a dying flame touches his skin.
‘The stars have shifted, the dogs are guarding in the west. I shall be leaving for the hunt,’ Írissë says as she wraps the protective leathers tightly around her face. Before he offers to join, she commands gently, ‘Stay and rest.’
‘Come back to me when you return,’ Ehtelë responds without fully knowing why. Only that he cannot be parted from Írissë too long. Not now, not when a treasured, fragile light has been kindled in this endless darkness.
His friend says naught in response, but her eyes smile between white furs. An image he has not seen since Tirion, Ehtelë realizes as Írissë steps out into the bitter cold. Keep my heart warm while I’m gone.
In the darkness of Helcaraxë, a flame of love is kindled between Aredhel and Ecthelion.

The world of man is evil, Shizue knows. She has always known, deep in her heart, that man is cruel, uncaring, only useful as prey for her and her sisters. And yet, there is something different about this one. He seems the same as the rest, at first, on a ship full of other men who carelessly toss their nets into the water, gathering up fish that are not theirs to take and leaving their litter in the oceans. This particular ship, in fact, is worse than many others that sail through, because one of its nets ensnares her sister Maritza. Maritza shrieks as she is hauled out of the water, and Shizue goes racing towards her, preparing to launch out of the water in an attempt to shred the net that holds her sister captive. However, she finds the action unnecessary; upon hearing the shriek, the man looks over the side of the ship. He catches sight of the struggling mer in the net, and then begins lowering the net back into the water.
“Merrick! What the hell are you doing?”
“We’ve caught a mer, sir,” the man says. “I’m letting her go.”
“Just kill it!” the other voice shouts.
“Respectfully, sir,” Merrick says, “I am not inviting a curse on my bloodline.”
The other voice grumbles about superstitious sailors, but Shizue is too preoccupied with helping her sister free herself from the net. As soon as they are both clear, the net begins to raise again, though it is significantly lighter of fish now. The other voice grumbles, but Merrick ignores it, looking out over the waves. He catches Shizue’s eye and holds her gaze for a moment, and then looks away. Shizue stares after him for a long moment, and then dives.
-
The ship carrying Merrick comes by again. It crosses into Shizue’s cove about once a week, and she finds herself observing him from afar. She wonders what he is like, outside of his work as a sailor. She wonders if he is a kind man, or if he really is just superstitious.
Then, one day, his ship is out in her cove, and there is a storm, and she has no more need to wonder, because he is in the water, and she is pulling him out, to land, and then he is coughing up seawater and shivering, and she shakes him until he rouses enough to pull himself to the shelter of an inland cave to weather the storm. When the storm passes, she returns to his island and finds him standing in the sand, looking out at the sea with his hands on his hips. He startles and stumbles back when he sees her.
“Hello,” she says.
“Hello,” he returns warily. “You look… familiar.”
“I pulled you out of the water,” Shizue says.
“Oh,” Merrick says. “I think I owe you my life, then.”
“You saved my sister’s, so consider us even.”
“Alright, then. My name is Merrick. May I have yours?”
“I know. I am Shizue.”
“You know?”
“I heard another human say your name when you cut my sister loose,” Shizue says. “Did you truly believe we would curse your bloodline, had you killed her?”
“Not really,” Merrick says, “but if I’m not superstitious, I’m in trouble. I do believe you would have found some other way to retaliate, though.”
“Of course,” Shizue says. “We would have sunk your ship.”
“Oh,” Merrick says faintly. “That’s… good to know.” There is a momentary lapse in conversation, and then, “Speaking of sunk ships, do you know what happened to the one I was on?”
“I think it returned to shore,” Shizue says, “but I’m not sure. I was focused on saving you.”
Merrick hums consideringly. “Is there any food on this island? It’ll be a week before they’re back.”
Shizue points inland, where there is fresh water and fruit trees grow. Merrick builds himself a small structure around the mouth of the cave he took shelter from the storm in, to keep it dry and warm. They chat during the days and go their separate ways at night.
A week passes with no sign of Merrick’s ship.
One of Shizue’s questions is answered: Merrick is indeed kind. He offers her fruit, asks about her day, sympathizes with her when she complains about humans stealing their fish, though he does explain that humans eat them, too. She demands that he prove this, and upon being given a fish to eat, he prepares it with a knife that had been strapped to his thigh, cooks it over a fire, and eats it. Shizue watches him in fascination. She asks him why he needs to burn it before eating it, and he explains that raw fish make humans sick. She comments that humans must be quite delicate creatures, and he laughs and says, “Perhaps in comparison to mers.”
Two weeks pass, and no sign of the ship.
It is in the second week of Merrick’s stay on the island that Shizue comes to realize that he is… beautiful. She has never been particularly interested in humans before, and especially not human men, but there is something about the way that he moves, a grace and efficiency that is captivating to watch. She realizes she is going to be sad to see him return to his people. If he returns to his people. She can see the doubt beginning to creep into his eyes.
“You could stay with me,” she says to him at the dawn of the third week. “Here, on this island. I can bring you fish, and you can bring me fruit, and we can be… something new. Something just for us.”
He smiles at her, in the gentle way he always does, but this time it is tinged with regret. “No,” he says simply. “I wish I could want that, but I have never wanted love, and not even being stranded with a beautiful woman has changed that.”
“You’ve… never wanted love?”
“No,” he says.
“Oh,” she says. “But you are so kind.”
He sighs and sits down near the water, resting his chin on his palm. “I don’t have to be in love to love the world. Do you understand?”
“No,” Shizue says.
“Do you love your sisters?”
“Of course!”
“Are you in love with them?”
Shizue makes a face. “No.”
Merrick laughs, though not with malice. “Exactly. I love my friends. I love my family. To some degree, I love half of the strangers I meet on the street. But I’ve never been in love, and I have no desire to be. I like you, but I don’t want to be alone here with you forever. Can you understand that?”
Shizue sighs, and pouts. “Yes.”
Merrick smiles at her. Shizue pouts a little longer, but then sighs and smiles back.
At the end of the third week, Merrick’s ship comes back to the cove. He lights a big fire to draw their attention, and they send a lifeboat to come and get him.
“By God, man, how are you alive?” one of his crewmates asks.
Merrick laughs, looking out over the water. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

Never After oneshot - True Love
A Rosamund focused piece about her post-canon and deciding that true love is overrated anyway.
Wrote this one under the terms of a one-hour limit (during which time I actually wrote, edited, and posted it to AO3) so it probably isn't my best but I think it's quite good for the circumstances.

More doodles, this time featuring Rose and Jack.
Since both of them are musically inclined, they often spent nights together writing songs and coming up with acapella arrangements. Jack got her into Pokemon (her favourite is Litwick) and Rose got them into history. Her love of cooking bloomed from her very first sleepover with Jack, where they made bacon pancakes together. Rose is very much in love with them, they know this, they’ve talked about it, and decided to just let it be (Jack trusts her to respect their boundaries and Rose trusts them to treat her feelings gently).

But while out on an errand Jerry just so happens to meet a cute guy. But more than the blond's smile it's Elmo's reaction to hearing his name that makes Jerry curious.

Story Summary:
Starting college is a big step and a dive into a new chapter for many people. Zeroing in on what they allegedly, momentarily want to make of their life. It’s a “new year, new me” decision that aligns with semesters and college years instead of the common calendar.
Leaving her home country to study abroad, Jerry made that decision for herself. Trying to leave his past behind himself, Jerry is determined to make his college experience worthwhile. To let those seven semesters be the first chapter of a life Jerry can truly claim her own. But even with his best efforts, pretending his life only began twelve years ago is a feat. And unexpectedly finding someone Jerry can grow to trust as much as the only person she had throughout these twelve years… the outlook seems more problematic than promising. How much does he need to disclose? And is this really the relationship she wasn’t looking for but got handed after all? Too many questions and too many troubles, doubts who Jerry can trust. Is she going to lose that unhoped-for silver lining? Will it be because the person she took a liking to is just as messed up as him or because Jerry’s own pessimism is driving it to failure?
