Navigating the Path to Positivity: 5 Techniques to Transform Negative Thoughts in Depression
Introduction:
Dealing with depression often involves confronting a barrage of negative thoughts that can feel overwhelming. The journey towards healing encompasses not only understanding these thoughts but actively changing them. In this article, we'll explore five powerful techniques to help transform negative thoughts associated with depression, highlighting the importance of seeking support, such as that provided by the Arlington Counseling Group.Cognitive
Tumblr media
Restructuring: Cognitive restructuring involves identifying and challenging negative thought patterns. Start by recognizing negative thoughts and questioning their validity. Are they based on facts or assumptions? By challenging and reframing these thoughts, individuals can reshape their cognitive landscape, fostering a more positive mindset.
Mindfulness and Meditation: Mindfulness and meditation practices encourage individuals to be present in the moment, observing thoughts without judgment. By cultivating mindfulness, individuals can develop a greater awareness of negative thought patterns, allowing them to detach from them and redirect their focus towards the present.
Positive Affirmations: Introducing positive affirmations is a proactive way to counteract negative thoughts. Create a list of affirmations that resonate with you and repeat them regularly. These affirmations can serve as powerful reminders of your strengths, resilience, and capacity for positive change.
Behavioral Activation: Depression often leads to a lack of motivation and withdrawal from activities. Behavioral activation involves setting small, achievable goals and gradually increasing activity levels. By engaging in positive activities, individuals can disrupt negative thought patterns and cultivate a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction.
Journaling and Self-Reflection: Journaling provides a constructive outlet for expressing thoughts and emotions. Use a journal to track negative thoughts, identify patterns, and explore alternative perspectives. Additionally, engage in self-reflection to gain insights into the roots of negative thoughts and work towards addressing underlying issues.
Support from the Arlington Counseling Group:
While these techniques can be powerful tools in changing negative thoughts associated with depression, seeking professional support is invaluable. The Arlington Counseling Group offers a compassionate and therapeutic environment where individuals can explore their thoughts and emotions with the guidance of experienced therapists.
Conclusion:
Changing negative thoughts associated with depression is a process that involves self-awareness, proactive strategies, and, importantly, seeking support. The techniques mentioned above, combined with the assistance of professionals from the Arlington Counseling Group, create a comprehensive approach to transforming negative thought patterns and fostering a more positive and resilient mindset. Remember that the journey to mental well-being is unique for each individual, and seeking help is a courageous step towards positive change.

FLP CHAPBOOK OF THE DAY: I’d Rather Be a Hyacinth by Cathy Hailey
PREORDER NOW: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/id-rather-be-a-hyacinth-by-cathy-hailey/
I’d Rather Be a Hyacinth features ekphrastic poems inspired by an episodic performance of the Moscow Festival Ballet interwoven with poems of refuge from grief, the comfort and healing found in nature, memory, and family. The poems are an exploration of mimesis in Aristotle’s sense, a re-representing of life–a witnessing and re-animation of the lives of all creatures in nature–the biosphere, the artistic life as performed on stage in the ballet, the spiritual life beyond, and a hope that illuminating the interconnectedness of all can bring about a renewed consciousness. I’d Rather Be a Hyacinth is a venture into the haiku sonnet, a hybrid form combining eastern and western poetic styles.
Cathy Hailey teaches as an adjunct lecturer in Johns Hopkins University’s online MA in Teaching Writing program and previously taught high school English and Creative Writing in Prince William County (PWC), Virginia. She is Northern Region Vice President of The Poetry Society of Virginia (PSV) and organizes In the Company of Laureates, a biennial reading of poets laureate held in PWC. Her writing has been published inThe New Verse News, Poetry Virginia, Written in Arlington, Stay Salty: Life in the Garden State (Vol. 2), Poetry for Ukraine (THE POET), Family (THE POET), and NoVA Bards. Poems are forthcoming in The Poetry Society of Virginia Centennial Anthology.
ADVANCE PRAISE FOR I’d Rather Be a Hyacinth by Cathy Hailey
Cathy Hailey’s venturesome book combines the crystalline image of haiku with the sonnet’s classic lyricism. Her poem ‘In Closing’ says, “There’s magic in condensing, / precision in expressing.” Magic is the right word when tradition and innovation spark new life into poetry. Clarity and prosody, East and West, formalism and liberation, all come together in I’d Rather Be a Hyacinth. There’s nothing more beautiful than harmony on the page.
–Grace Cavalieri, Maryland Poet Laureate
When you settle in to experience the dance of Cathy Hailey’s words, images, and symbols in her collection, I’d Rather Be a Hyacinth, you will not only feel like you’re an audience member of a deeply moving ballet – the poet’s form bringing words to life – but you will also be transfixed by the way her lyric poems show us life in all its complexity, beauty, and heartache. The ballet within the ballet reveals the richness between art and life: glimpses into Hailey’s own family relationships, rich in ancestry and love but also in grief, as well as meditations on nature and our connection to Earth’s creatures, and even the tragedy of so much loss of life due to the pandemic. Through the movement of Hailey’s poems, we feel how all of us – all of creation – are connected, how art helps us transcend sadness, and how beauty – like the sun – rises each morning, as we carry on in life’s great dance.
–Kathy Cable Smaltz, Poet Laureate, Emerita, Prince William County, VA

Spiritual Exploration
My spiritual life kind of started in college. I would meditate semiregularly and was part of the Hindu society, wihich did weekly pujas. I also took Hinduism classes and studied texts on my own- whatever was at the library- mainly Hindu and Buddhist texts. I would say I didn't live a clean lifestyle. I was angry and depressed a lot. I used to eat meat, used to smoke and drink (which may or may not be major deterrents to spiritual growth). I was on medication for anxiety and attentional issues. I was also moderately active, if that matters. I was also more social, which is to be expected in college vs. working life.
activities- meditation, reading mainly Gita
After college I continued to drink, mainly to deal with pressure. I reduced the amount of smoking. My dad taught me pranayama and I continued to try new spiritual practices related to meditation- i would hop in on classes in Arlington. I tried yoga a few times.
It was during this time that I experienced energy movements up my spine. I lost my job, and left for Hawwaii to work at an ashram/farm.
I learned a lot here. I learned about pranayama and medtation, and yoga. I don't really know what to make of that experience. I lost weight, looked better, but I felt a lot of tension with the staff, and often felt stressed socially, maybe i just felt out of place. REgardless, I met good people and learned a lot.
I then went back to Virignia, and started a few years excelling career wise. I was more spiritually active and started to clean up.
I was mostly celibate during this time.
NYC- I moved to NJ/NYC in 2014 and this changed me profoundly.
I was meditating a lot, drinking less. I could feel people, and felt confident.
After moving to the city, I started noticing my energy pouring out of me into other people. It would exit through my left side. This put me in a state of panic. I think I was part of some race/class war that was happening. I don't think I had a clear picture of what was happening.
I will say
that I felt part of the masses, like I had a place and I was accepted.
I used to freqeuent this IMPROV theater, UCB and enjoyed the energy I felt at the shows.
Sad- after the election of 2016, I got hit and people would attack me with their head (i was diagnosed as psychotic). I moved to RVA, and lived for 5 years in recovery. I felt very little light during this time, and had my space invaded constantly by people in corwds or on the road.
Initially, I was very tired and couldn't generate much energy. I spent a lot of time in bed, and prayed and did yoga frequently. I felt less connected (see NY post) then I did before, both to people and to the source.
It is now 2023, and I'm living a more functional life. I live in California and work doing analytics work. I still have energy management issues, but I'm able to operate. I feel a stronger connection to a higehr pwoer, similar to what I felt (didn't know it then) when I was a young teen. I see this as a positive sign. I'm not sure what to expect for the future. Will I be married, what is my career path, what am I good at, what will I look life? These are all questions I still have.
I can't handle another battle period like I did in 2016-2017.
I couldn't work then, I couldn't think clearly.
I'm scared for my future. I'm just working this job, to stay afloat.
I had dreams of starting my own thing. idk

HOW TO… 1 Make small improvements - Small changes that are consistently made over time can lead to significant improvements in the long run. Focus on making small, incremental changes rather than trying to make massive transformations overnight. 2 Focus on your systems, not your goals - It's important to have goals, but it's even more important to have systems in place that will help you achieve those goals. Your habits are the building blocks of your systems, and focusing on them will make it easier to achieve your goals. 3 Create a habit loop - Every habit has three components: a cue, a routine, and a reward. Understanding this habit loop can help you develop new habits and break old ones. 4 Stack your habits - Pair a new habit with an existing one to make it easier to remember and stick to. For example, if you want to start meditating in the morning, pair it with your morning cup of coffee. 5 Make your habits attractive - Habits that are enjoyable or rewarding are easier to stick to. Find ways to make your habits more enjoyable, such as listening to music while you exercise. 6 Make your habits easy - Habits that are simple and easy to do are more likely to stick. Reduce the friction involved in starting a new habit by breaking it down into small, manageable steps. 7 Track your progress - Keep track of your habits and your progress to help you stay motivated and make adjustments as needed. 8 Create a habit contract - Write down your habit commitments and sign it like a contract. Agreement with the
USSR/USFSR:
The Promises
to Accept Fair Terms
to End The Cold War
DANIEL JOHN WALKER
Wednesday, July 6, 2022
To Whom It May Concern:
I am a Political Candidate and a Political Candidate (for the U.S. Presidency) can requisition copies of each and every U.S. Gov. document about which he participated. I will be doing this.
In year 1980, I persuaded, cajoled and compelled the USSR/USFSR to sign a Document where they agreed to accept fair terms to end hostilities -- thus virtually ending the Cold War. For my rewards from the United States of America, I was offered (and I accepted) a Funeral Plan at the Arlington National Cemetery and Hospitalization Insurance. This was my payment. 🪦
On the 6th of July, 2011 -- eleven years ago, today -- I arrived "DOA" at the Ben Taub General 🏥 Hospital (due to a fatal fall from a tree, no fault of my own, a violent matter).💗 A wise Nurse was able to save my right arm from being amputated -- partly because I was willing to undergo her procedure without anesthesia.
Unfortunately, my brain was harmed -- unnecessarily -- and approximately 20% of my mind was intentionally erased (by some certain number of those present in the hospital). I swear that there would be no war in Ukraine today had I not been abused in the Ben Taub General Hospital! I forgot so much that I could not remember what to do to avert our crisis. I am a very efficacious, freeborn, volunteer Diplomat who comes up with excellent solutions to difficult problems.
During the abuses, the hospital was preparing to sever my right arm, unnecessarily -- and I thank the Rabbi who was on duty, doing his best -- and a very evil M.D. noted (FALSELY, for the record) that I am mentally retarded. This was obviously a way to entirely erase my brain in order to obtain (for personal gain) charitable funds by pretending to create an intelligent mind from an idiot. I had only been known to be smart -- prior to the telling of this lie. I can show 📄documentation.📃 No doctor had ever labeled me stupid before this day!
Other steps toward the intended murder of Daniel Walker, as he was (the erasure of my mind motivated by avarice), included the actual stealing of my -- ENTIRELY WELL EARNED -- Hospitalization Insurance Benefits and transferring them to some certain arrogant man of extremely false authority. Some male harlot, I believe. He got especially excellent treatment but I was only able to leave with both of my arms, a standard injection needed by my sort of a fall victim AND A PARTIALLY ERASED BRAIN!🪦🧠
A little bit of a trickle of a shock was the second attempt to erase my mind. Only minimal damage. But when the evil woman -- unidentified -- returned to give my brain her full dose of violent 🔌⚡ electricity a gentleman stopped her with an entirely violent effort.
Yes, you could possibly call me William J. Jack. But this is no time for your brilliant senses of humor!
I am mentally competent (compos mentis) and I am highly intelligent -- but my mental losses from my visit to the Ben Taub General Hospital are very severe, and (as a result) without my political help many lives have been lost. I was DOA but I am an eternal youth and I am knowledgeable and a blessed Rabbi was there to help, where he could. Some of the Nurses and Doctors, et al. were exceptional and helped me very well, but I was also MURDERED. Soon after my arrival, I sat up and I was awaiting my MRI and the Rabbi was rejoicing because he and God and I were able to fully regain my mind. I only needed to remain very silent and to meditate! I calmly and softly called out for 🤐 quiet! This would have entirely saved my brain/mind. At this point, prior to the MRI, which was followed by the attack with a trickle of electricity: Five Police Officers were ordered to yell at me as loud as they could and for as long as possible until asked (by the 🏥 Hospital) to stop. This was COLD BLOODED MURDER. I have amnesia and can not always recall facts at once. Approximately 20% of my mind was literally erased and it was the intention of the five Police Officers and/or their favored commissioners to ENTIRELY DELETE my mind and make money by programming the brain of a retardate, yours truly.
I heard the Rabbi tell the five hapless cops (just outside of my emergency room) that he wants them to fall silent and he said that if they do not stop he would inform ALL of the Christian Churches and ALL of the Jewish Synagogues of their horrible crime of cold-blooded murder. I remind you that I was sick!: They were cowards, attacking a sick man!
The Law Enforcement Officials (since the signing of the ☢️ Treaty, year 1980) who said they will not tolerate drunk drivers -- regardless of political engagements -- were/are coquette! (and this is my honest opinion). The meeting for the signing of the Treaty took place in various locations of a shopping mall (in Houston, Texas). The Soviets signed but they wanted to kill me -- and we all got one another drunk. I had to drive home (5 miles). This is because the Soviets bribed the only available taxicab driver and he yelled, loudly -- for all to hear -- that I was intoxicated! The cab driver also yelled that he will not transport a drunk! This is actually a common problem in Diplomacy and I observed diplomatic regulations and I drove home at 40 miles per hour, on the feeder road. No DWI/DUI charges were ever brought against me but the taunts from Law Enforcement were nothing short of slutdom! I made a PEACE TREATY! The taunting cops were/are coquette -- and you, the people have my answer. I no longer drink any alcoholic beverages; I never touch a drop. Please vote for me, when the time comes.
After ten years from July 6, 2011 -- last year, year 2021 -- some certain doctors of the Ben Taub General 🏥 Hospital were pretending that they had helped (and that they regularly help) my brain/mind -- not just with the standard injection (mentioned above). The fact is that my body is MINE, my brain is MINE, my mind is MINE: I am responsible for my mind and I make the decisions! I am NOT a ⚖️ legal 🥼 🧪 experiment! Any improvements of my mind are entirely to my own credit and I AM CLAIMING.
I do now do and I always have done my own composing and I have needed no help with this letter nor anything else which I have ever written.
I almost forgot to mention that during my visit to the Ben Taub General Hospital on July 6, 2011 a foolish Cardiologist accidentally killed me and just before I died I asked the U.S. Army -- that was at the Emergency Room Entrance -- to kill the doctors if they fail to bring me back to life. The Army watched them as they worked over my dead body and they revived me at great personal expense (their own money). The Cardiologist is a very stupid woman of my own age and she explained that she had given me a drug to intentionally kill me so that she could brag about having brought me back to life (easily). She explained that she was surprised and that she didn't know that I had fallen from a tree and hurt my head. When she gave me an injection (the injection which almost thoroughly killed me), she said that it was to HELP my ❤️ 💜 heart! I am currently unable to recall at what point in the series of events at the Ben Taub General Hospital this cardiologist made her mistakes -- but she DID kill me and I WAS revived.
Sincerely,
In all honesty,
Daniel Walker.
Daniel (John) Walker

Daniel John Walker

NEW FROM FINISHING LINE PRESS: Intrastate Lines by Alexandra “Zan” Delaine Hailey
On SALE now! Pre-order Price Guarantee: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/intrastate-lines-by-alexandra-zan-delaine-hailey/
In a year of frequent intrastate travel, Alexandra “Zan” Delaine Hailey collected images of the #Virginia landscape, the arts, the music of rock and rave, fusing them together into a series of tightly crafted #poems. In Intrastate Lines, she takes readers on a meandering journey, capturing creatures, colors, tunes, and textures witnessed in #nature, on highways, backroads, and celestial pathways, each poem, celebrating a moment—treasured yet ordinary. Together, the poems form a meditation, a celebration of life—her life and ours.
Alexandra “Zan” Delaine Hailey (1992-2018)—writer, visual artist, dancer—served as an inaugural poet laureate in Prince William County, VA, 2014-2016. Her poet laureate project, “Ekphrasticize That!” focused on ekphrastic writing and art and inspiration from the letters of Vincent van Gogh to his brother Theo. Hailey studied English and Creative Writing at Virginia Commonwealth University, where Gary Sange, Gregory Donovan, and David Wojahn helped her hone her poetry. Her writing has been published in The Northern Virginia Review, A Wreath of Golden Laurels: An Anthology of Poetry by 100 Poets Laureate, Written in Arlington, The Poetry Society of Virginia Centennial Anthology, New Departures: Write By The Rails Anthology, and Virginia Commonwealth University’s Focused Inquiry Textbook.
This book is funded in part by FLP’s One Last Word Program. ONE LAST WORD helps to bring the last works of gifted poets to the world.
PRAISE FOR Intrastate Lines by Alexandra “Zan” Delaine Hailey
Intrastate Lines is an open invitation to sink into the beautiful brevity and saturation of Alexandra “Zan” Hailey‘s work. Her voice floats like a ghost between the lines…speaking softly, but carrying great hope. Through the fragility of time and the impermanence of life, Zan unveils the quiet daily moments that are often overlooked but still yearn to be seen. Her poetry will let you taste summer clouds and leave you begging the bumble bee to show discernment, and kindness, when weighing down a petal. The world that she creates through her words is a revolving door that you want to step through again and again.
–Natalie Potell, Poet Laureate, Prince William County, VA, 2018-2220
Each of Zan Hailey‘s poems is a love letter to life: perceptive, spare, melodic. Like various parts of a musical score flirt with each other, some being repeated but in a different key or to a varied tempo, Zan’s poems speak to one another and to the reader. Whether she observes without judgment or describes beauty so it’s somehow even more heartbreakingly beautiful, each poem is both its own song as well as a chorus of travelers celebrating life.
–Kathy Smaltz, Poet Laureate, Prince William County, VA, 2016-2018
As I wander down the roads that lead me to when I was your teacher, Zan, I marvel at your window on our world of beauty. I look up at your blossoming sun, your bulbous clouds, and celebrate my days with you as you began writing your magical poems.
The readers of your lines here will find soothing pleasure in following you as you paint your scenes that are harnessed with rainbow language.
You are the teacher as we reach to find our own quiet scene and react to these lovely ekphrastic and nature poems.

OLD JOYS AND SORROWS Deep in the woods, where no one ever passes by accident, The Shrine still stands. It was built by the bend of a trickling stream, one of many scattered creeks that eventually exit as Starratt Brook at the ocean. Jim Russell and his partner Nasha were looking for somewhere quiet to practice what they called "isolation meditation". Local lore says they lost a stillborn child, and buried it somewhere in this bit of earth. The truth of that may never be known. Like a lot of folks from the hippie era, their time in these woods eventually ended, and they returned to the States. Their relationship broke up as well, and they went their separate ways. Now I've been coming here for longer than they ever did, revisiting this sacred site of old joys and sorrows. I arrived in the rattling rainfall, treetops swaying in a heavy wind. A couple years had passed since my last visit, and I set several squirrels scurrying who thought they had this space to themselves. The eccentric shape of The Shrine always makes me smile. The building itself is an isosceles trapezoid, or basically, a triangle with the top lopped off. The inlaid design on the front wall mimics a coffin shape, terminated at the top with a tiny cross in a peephole window. Inside is spare and simple. Small campstove for warmth, and an altar to kneel at the far end. Whatever trappings of spirituality lay inside are long absent. But the lingering effect is the closest I've ever felt to haunted – even though it's more me that's doing the haunting. March 10, 2024 Arlington East, Nova Scotia Year 17, Day 5964 of my daily journal.

Is it weird to go and visit a cemetery JUST to look at really old graves? I want to go to one in my city for architecture/history appreciation-y reasons but I feel like I'll look Off? :/
I mean, I hang out in cemeteries---I have three albums’ worth of photographs attesting to that fact, spanning different seasons and cemeteries. Robert Loerzel, who is a minor Chicago celebrity, can be frequently found hanging out in St. Boniface Cemetery in Uptown. If you head to Graceland Cemetery, you can see people relaxing under the trees with their dogs, children on bikes and couples strolling down mausoleum row. In Philadelphia, The Woodlands was a popular place for people to go running in the morning; Laurel Hill had daily tours and Halloween events and even yoga classes. When I lived in a tiny town in Michigan, we regularly took field trips to the cemetery to learn about local history, do grave rubbings.
So if it’s “weird” to hang out in cemeteries, anon, then you are in very good company.
Cemeteries, particularly in the U.S., actually have a history of being public recreational spaces. Places like Laurel Hill, Graceland, St. Boniface and the Woodlands were shaped to be beautiful, open and green, emblems of what’s referred to as the “rural” or “garden” cemetery movement. These spaces were collections of history, art, horticulture---and many of them predate other municipal public spaces like parks, botanic gardens, or museums. Is it any wonder that Americans began picnicking in graveyards, gathering to socialize, take in nature, hunt, and even hold carriage races?
The broad use of these cemeteries was forerunner of and inspiration to the modern public park. Frederick Law Olmstead, one of the men behind the creation of Central Park in NYC and inspiration for Chicago’s Lakefront, complained incessantly that visiting graveyards was “a wretched pretext” for what people really wanted: metropolitan parks, spaces for social, neighborly recreation.
He would get them---attitudes towards death were shifting in the U.S., and municipal public works were growing and gaining visibility all across the country. By the mid-20th century, people left cemeteries to the dead and the mourning.
But the pendulum of history swings and now, here in the 21st century, historical cemeteries are trying to entice people back with the same social, neighborly recreation they once offered our 19th century cousins. These cemeteries offer tours and nature walks, host weddings and festivals, are open for runners and bikers and dogs and amateur historians; some even hold concerts.
This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t be respectful when you visit. Definitely look up the cemetery’s rules before you go---Arlington doesn’t allow bikes, for example, and Graceland doesn’t allow food. But there’s nothing weird or unusual about making a trip to the cemetery to soak in the peaceful atmosphere, admire the statuary and meditate on history.
On the contrary, it’s one of the great American pastimes.
