I lived all over the South when I was in the Army, did Basic and Advanced School in Fort McClellan Alabama, went to Fort Bragg North Carolina, worked a Customs Detail at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point North Carolina for 2 months, went Fort Jackson South Carolina, Joint Maneuver Training Center (FCJMTC) Fort Chaffee Arkansas, Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk Louisianan, and just a couple months at Homestead Air Force Base, Florida for Hurricane Andrew. I leaned a great many things about the South that no book could teach me, one of those things was just how FUCKING CRAZY folks in the south get when a storm is coming in. I mean every time a storm comes in it's like half the population forgot one just came in 2 months earlier. This was brought up yesterday seeing folks at the Walmart here in Upstate Nevada buying up shit like the apocalypse was coming. We are 697.39 miles (1,120.73 km) from Baja California and folks up here are acting like they are in Mobile Alabama or Gulfport Louisianan. They are doing the same dumb shit I saw folks at the H.E.B. in Texas doing, carts full up with milk, bread, and beer. I mean what the fuck are you going to do with 12 gallons of milk when the power goes out? I'm not knockings on the South, I loved living there, for the most part. No, I'm knockings on those folks who "storm horde" every time a breeze blew in off the water. I'd like to say all those folks were "transplants" from some other state but they fact is most of them were just doing what their Ma' and Pa' did and how their Grandma and Grandpa did. The dumpsters and trash cans would wreak of spoiled milk for months after a big storm knocked out the power for a week. This ones for folks who have never experienced a true Southern Hurricane party, GO! Help your neighbors board up their windows, sandbag their foundations, move livestock and cook off all that stuff that will spoil when the lights go out. You will never see a group of people working together for the same ends and flipping the bird to the storm at the same time any place else. The South loves a good storm party.

Side Note: I will never call US military bases and forts by any of the new names, guess its the old guy in me coming through.

Introducing Me and My Blog (2012)

I retired from full-time movement work in July of 2011 when I left my job as Leadership Development Coordinator for the AFL-CIO. I took a few months off from work and traveled, caught up on personal business, hosted some friends from the south, renewed connections with some Oregon friends, and enjoyed the Oregon summer and early fall. Currently I’m doing part-time work with the Alliance for a Just Society and I serve on the boards of Western States Center and the Rural Organizing Project.

Now I am figuring out what it means to be “retired” when so much of my life is tied to activism. I’ll be reflecting more on that topic in my upcoming blog posts.

I love travel, my local library (novels, history, biography and autobiography), independent and documentary films, and going out to hear music. I live near downtown Salem and I’m committed to getting to the pool several times each week and doing as many of my errands on foot as possible. I’m learning to cook new recipes and rely as much as possible on locally grown foods. I have a network of friends around the country who I enjoy spending time with. Last year I took a month-long trip with my brother to Paris and the UK and connected with our Welsh cousins. This year I’m traveling to El Salvador with CAUSA, Oregon’s immigrant rights organization, and to Spain with a couple of friends.

My roots are in western Pennsylvania and each of my parents had a Welsh and an English parent. My grandfathers both worked in the steel mills in Homestead and my maternal grandmother was a seamstress in a baby clothes factory and later worked in a hospital laundry doing mending. My paternal great-grandfather was killed in the Homestead mill in an industrial accident and my grandfather Howell went to work there at age 12 to help support his mother and 4 other children. My mom was a secretary for our local school board and my dad worked on-site at big construction projects doing payroll, purchasing, and managing the trailer office and moved around from place to place where the company he worked for was building roads and bridges. I like looking at bridges because my dad got me interested in them.

I started my organizing career in 1973 with ACORN in Ft. Smith Arkansas. I worked with Oregon Fair Share (now Oregon Action), Oregon NARAL and national NARAL (now NARAL Pro-Choice America) in the late 1970′s and early 1980′s. In 1982 I moved to North Carolina and directed the Carolina Community Project, founded NC Fair Share, and then worked regionally in the south with Grassroots Leadership and South Carolina United Action. During that time I had the opportunity to be connected to programs led by the Center for Third World Organizing and the Applied Research Center based in Oakland, CA. I returned to Oregon in the mid-90′s to work as a trainer with Western States Center. In 1997 I moved back to NC to work for the AFL-CIO as a field representative and later became the Deputy Director for the Southern Region and then coordinator of national leadership development programs for staff and elected leaders of our local and state organizations.

Starting with my time at Grassroots Leadership I committed myself to embedding an anti-racist perspective into organizing and training work I am involved in. I am one of the founding members of the National Organizers Alliance and NOA has been an important place of connection and support for me. Through my regional work in the south and northwest, I have met and worked with many amazing organizers and organizations around the country. I am very excited to see the growth of the Occupy movement.

I’m looking forward to writing more in this blog about my retirement plans and questions, my reflections on my work as an organizer and current events, and the travel I’ll be doing over the next couple of years. I’m also including links to organizations I mention on the side bar on my blog page. I hope my readers will comment and both challenge and add to what I have to say.

This weekend was a really good weekend! Our friend Sarah came from Arkansas on Thursday evening and we had a great time.

Friday we drove to the Field of Dreams movie set which is only an hour and fifteen minutes away and we were soooooo excited! At least I was. When we got there we were told that it was closed due to that they’re getting ready for the Cubs against I don’t remember what other team this coming week. I got to see the homestead from a distance. So we decided to go to the National Farm Toy Museum in the same town. Who knew??? David and Sarah really enjoyed it. It was ok for me but didn’t like it much. Afterwards we went to an Antique shop right across from the museum, it was a nice one. When came back to Waterloo we went to eat at Maid Rite and it was once again so very good. Sarah liked it too and since we were already in Cedar Falls we decided to walk through the cute downtown since the local shops were open. Some of the shops I absolutely loved and I must go again by myself and take my time. Later on Friday we went to the Iowa Irish Festival, which was going on the whole weekend. We had a great time. Had some beer, ate some good food and heard some good Irish music and saw some good dancers. Lots of vendors and lots of fun.

Saturday we went to the Amana Colonies earlier in the day then to the outlet mall close by and then headed to the Irish Festival. We got there later in the afternoon because it was insanely humid. We ate dinner and left at 8 pm because it was going to start raining. Many stayed and got soaked and had a great time. We were all tired so it was ok to leave. Sunday we were not going to go to the festival because it was supposed to rain but it didn’t rain until later so we got to spend some time there. Can’t complain, it’s a great festival. I’m inly 5 percent Irish but I enjoy their culture very much.

Now I can’t wait until Oktoberfest at the Amana Colonies. I’m sure that’ll be fun too. We won’t be able to stay too late because we are about an hour and a half away and we’ll be tired but it’ll be fun nonetheless.

Sent to me from a friend:

Deep in the Ouachita Mountains, there is a hidden in plain sight graveyard with an interesting history. In this ominous graveyard rests a man named Sam Swindle. At the tender age of twelve years old, Sam developed osteomyelitis in his leg. Osteomyelitis is inflammation caused by an infection in the bones, generally effecting arms, legs or spine.

Using a saw, Dr Steuart amputated Sam's leg on the kitchen table in 1922. Sam's leg was then buried with its own gravestone in the Scott-Wehunt Cemetery in Montgomery County, Arkansas.

As a thank you for saving his life, Sam bought the good doctor a recliner and carried on with his farm work until 1973 when he was laid to rest in the same cemetery as his leg.

There's been an article circulating on social media the past few years about Sam's leg but with little information on where the graveyard is located. So off we went... to find this unmarked graveyard. Or so said the article... We drove way outta the way, overthinking the location of this place... We found an old homestead in the middle of nowhere on a strange dirt road, no leg. We found an old cellar, still no leg.

My team of explorers and I decided to head back to Polk County... but wouldntyaknowit... on our way out, the VeRy LaSt PlAcE wE lOoKeD... there it was. A small, iron fenced in graveyard tucked off the road, hidden by Mother Nature and Father Time. Back in the far corner of the cemetery, rest Sam and Sam's leg. We found it.

This is such a sad story but reflects the state of the world we live in.

Ralph Lonon Sanford was born in Baxter County, Arkansas, in 1890, and died in Dayton, Ohio, in 1950. He married Alta Willhoit in Ozark County, Missouri, in 1921, after returning from Europe, where he had served as a medic in World War I. In the 1920s, he received a homestead in Las Animas County, Colorado, where his only child, Almo Gay Sanford Bryan, was born in 1921. While in Europe he accumulated a very large collection of postcards, some of which he sent to his future wife and his parents and some of which he brought home with him. Most of the postcards are in bound booklets, which make them difficult to scan. They document not only the sights and historic buildings in France and Germany, but many also show the damage done during the war. The individual postcards, many of which have writing on the back, have been scanned and placed online in The Ralph Lonon Sanford World War I Postcard Archive.
