It’s the fact that Arwen and Aragorn both lost their families at the end of the Third Age for me. Aragorn found a second family in his people, but they were not the ones who raised him, and the elves were the only family Arwen had EVER known.
Something about the way that they were not only each other’s lovers, but the last remnants of their family makes me want to cry.

the tale of aragorn and arwen being an appendix that a first time reader would very likely not have read makes all of aragorns “wistfully daydreaming about my girlfriend” moments in the books twelve hundred times funnier. and there are like so many of them too. literally no one, from his closest companions to the reader, has any idea why he is sighing forlornly at the trees, and the good professor simply doesnt bother to explain
