My spouse and I have finished the complex route for Aloalo and nearly all of the regular ones. Just got two left to go on the left-handed side. Man, I keep forgetting how GOOD Varient Dungeon content is, even if you don't do the Extreme varients in terms of gameplay. To say nothing of the fact that the sidequests are pretty good and this one is wonderful by virtue of one of the bestest boys in FFXIV is leading it. And the sidequest ends in a very nice and befitting way of Endwalker.
Good stuff to make a date with your spouse with!

Whoaa much enstars lore... and ruri is adorable wait ... also are there canon aliens in enstars??
Tell me more about leo's depression travel arc/alien abduction if you'd like ? I'm fascinated, he's just. He's justa. Liddle guy<3
OH YEAH RURI IS IMPLIED TO BE AN ALIEN AND THE ONE THAT PUT ENGIRLS INTO A TIMELOOP (Uhm, hold on *shuffling papers* okay! Strap in Kippy beloved, this is gonna take a bit!)
Okay. let me explain that whole "EnGirl is a timeloop thing". actually that's about all i know. Ruri (I think?) is implied to A) be an Alien and B) Have put the EnGirls timeline into a loop so it never ends. Why? Idk. I don't know much about EnGirls. Also EnGirls takes place at the same time as Enstars !!-Era so some people speculate !! is also stuck in a timeloop by virtue of that, since the two DO cross over with Ruka/Leo and Suzu/Mika being related.
Anyway! Onto the shut-in Leo arc aka my favorite Leo arc bc he's SUCH a fucked up little guy. So! So!!!! Okay. Okay. I don't know your baseline knowledge so I'm gonna assume you know Nothing and explain it all. Ummmm. Readmore'd for the sake of everyone's sanity bc I go Insane(tm) about Leo. Sorry for the essay kippy i love him so much
OKAY. A story in Three Parts. Part 1: i don't actually have a name for this part its just prelude and talking about the War mostly. I go on "tangents" throughout here that mostly just add extra context to certain things. IMPORTANT NOTES: There's mentions of ANIMAL ABUSE and BLOOD. Also just a lot of SAD STUFF. Thought I'd warn you!
So! Leo! Leader of the Mega unit - [TANGENT 1: MEGA UNITS. Before Units were split up into the 2-5 (Mama is an exception) that they are now, Units were MASSIVE and guild-like. There could be hundreds of people in one unit. One of the side effects of the War was the dissolution of Mega-units] - Chess, also known as "Backgammon" or "Orthello", but when Leo was put in charge he changed it back to Chess. It's heavily implied that Eichi was behind the former leader before Leo getting ousted from his position, allowing Leo to step into the leadership position.
NOW! This is where it gets MESSY. Leo, as you might well know, is a character who loves far too hard, far too fast, and far too much. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it contributes to his downfall. Once he's put into this leadership position, it's revealed that Chess is coming apart at the seams, more or less. Many members just ride off of Chess' good name, and slack on actually being an idol. [TANGENT 2: WHO'S PART OF CHESS (That we care about)? Primarily Ritsu, Leo and Izumi! Tsukasa has NOT entered Yumenosaki yet, Ritsu slacked a lot but still did occasionally go to practice, and Arashi... Tbh I'm wishy-washy on her position but she generally doesn't go to practice or doesn't care much about the unit so while she might be part of it, I don't tend to count her at this stage. Leo is the leader, and Izumi acts as his right-hand man and protector.] So, Leo is kind of also fraying apart at the seams because Chess is falling apart and threatening to splinter into sub-units, especially once Eichi introduces the new Live system; but Leo's ultimately incapable of holding them together and they fragment. Many of these sub-units take names inspired by Chess pieces - Knight was already taken, so Izumi suggests Knights. Leo and Izumi are the founding members of Knights. Sometime around here Leo talks to one of the splinter units he's meant to fight, and offers them a deal. They can be his friend, but never use his songs again; OR they can use his songs all they'd like, but they'd throw away any chance of friendship with him they add. Everyone chose to use his songs. So. After Knights is formed, Eichi starts using Leo (and his friendship with Leo) to destroy units he doesn't care for, and to eliminate the sub-units of Chess. Under the stress of destroying people he once cared for, realizing the members of Chess - who Leo'd do anything for and loved dearly - were only using him for his songs, and his relationship with Izumi getting messy, Leo cracks.
[TANGENT 3: LEO AND EICHI. Leo and Eichi met in the hospital. Leo had broken his arm protecting the cat Little John, who resides in the archery range. Delinquents often hung out in the archery range as it was far from the school, and once day decided to terrorize Little John by shooting her with arrows and trying to burn her. Leo protects her by picking her up and running around the range to keep her away from them, but this leads to him slipping, falling, protecting Little John, and breaking his arm. It's implied the break was bad, as Madara finds him via Little John's meowing in a pool of his own blood, composing with his blood, and saying the pain gave him inspiration as he's "Never felt such pain before" (A REAL QUOTE.) - Also Leo calls Eichi "Tenshi".]
PART 2: SHUT-IN ERA
So. Under all the weight of crushing people's dreams, Izumi's pressure on him, and everything else, Leo breaks and disappears. He becomes a shut-in, forcing himself to compose because he doesn't think anyone will love him if he can't compose. It's implied that he bites his hands till they bleed when he can't compose, and he generally just stops taking care of himself. In Lionheart Izumi visits the Tsukinaga household, and Ruka ends up crying while begging Izumi to talk to Leo, which prompts Leo to come out of his room to tell Izumi off for "making Ruka cry". It's noted by Izumi at this point that Leo can barely stand and looks terrible.
[TANGENT 4: LEO AND IZUMI. Leo and Izumi have been friends for A While, I don't really know how long tbh? Since they were first years, I think? And they're extremely close. Izumi is. Not A Great Person during this whole thing, and while Leo's giving Izumi nothing but love and praise Izumi scolds him and tells him to do better. Izumi himself notes that he made a mistake by being so harsh on Leo. Izumi's actually really hard on himself for his part in Leo breaking, but Leo constantly forgives him and even says during Next Door that "[Izumi] is the only one who thinks he did anything wrong." (Might not be the exact quote, but close enough) So. Leo's entirely forgiven him and thinks him blameless.]
So. Leo just kind of... Shuts himself away. Composes, or, tries to compose. He often says that he can hear melodies in his head, and during this era especially they've disappeared, which only add to his slump. Sometime during this, Madara decides enough is enough and sends Leo travelling. It's never outright stated where Leo goes, or what he does, but he was gone for most of his Second Year, between disappearing and shutting himself in his house. It's important to note that nobody but Madara knows what happened to Leo when he disappeared. (iirc) Madara does bring Leo back to the stage at one point in Concerto, where he manages to get Leo to perform with him. Izumi, I believe, says that Madara "saved Leo" but that Knights "brought him back to the sage" but. Zuzu. Bestie. He performed with Madara first before he rejoined Knights??? Anyway.
Leo shows up again around the start of his third year, sneaking around the school and trying to get a feel for Tsukasa. Tbh I forget exactly when Ritsu properly started joining in but I think that was during the War Era, and Arashi joined in around then, too? So Knights was a 3-person, then 4-person unit for a while. Izumi, Ritsu, Arashi, and Tsukasa. Leo then challenges them to a duel - Judgement. To determine if Knights is worthy of still existing. During Judgement Leo teams up with Eichi, Nazuna, and Kuro to form a temporary unit called "Knights Killers" while Knights is made up of the aforementioned members. Knights manages to tie the Judgement, and Leo realizes that he can't dissolve Knights, as they belong to the others just as much as their his unit. So. Leo rejoins Knights. Huzzah!
PART 3: WHAT'S HE DOIN NOW?
Leo Duels Tsukasa to see if he's worthy of the crown and title of ousama when he graduates. I'm gonna be real I don't remember a lot of this story but Tsukasa does get Leo's approval in the end. So. Leo and Izumi graduate, and Tsukasa takes over as the leader of Knights. Leo and Izumi live together in Italy (after Izumi says that he needs to keep an eye on Leo) and Izumi works as Leo's "manager" to make sure he's not spreading himself too thin.
[TANGENT 5: THAT WHOLE THING. In The DF debut event that I haven't read, Leo's revealed to be taking on a bunch of solo work and spreading himself super thin. The only reason Mama gets involved is because he's concerned about Leo. After this, in Next Door, Izumi says he needs to keep an eye on Leo and make sure he's not spreading himself too thin, hence letting Leo stay with him in Italy, and becoming his 'manager'.]

Oh I’m learning some Japanese! Is it true there are multiple ways to say the word “I” in the language?
Oh yeah, there are multiple ways to use first person pronouns. In casual conversation it’s usually;
私(watashi),あたし(atashi), あらし(arashi), うち(uchi), 俺(ore), 僕(boku),自分(jibun),わい(wai), わし(washi hiroshima).
But in formal discussion one would usually use either; 私(watakushi) or 小生 (shosei). I could list more if you’d like, it’s all really interesting!

SS Finals - Melee: Chapter 11
Location: ES Dome Idol Practice Room Characters: Tsukasa, Subaru, Makoto, Ritsu, Mao, Arashi, Izumi, Rei & Leo
Tumblr media
Leo: Anyway, I know it must be fun to make a fuss like the good ol’ times, but now isn’t the time for both units to be doing that, right?
There’s something we gotta do, isn’t there? I dunno but I’ll do my best, I guess.
Tsukasa: *Sigh…* Y–You really seem down, Leo-san. Are you okay?
I apologise for asking you to practise with us despite not realising you’re not feeling up for it.
Leo: Don’t apologise. Stand proud, “King”.
I wanna remove that disappointing memory from the Qualifying Rounds, so I’m desperately trying to do my best right now. I wanna get as strong as I can to ease my worries.
It’s way more meaningful than staying holed up in my room and sulking in bed, so if that’s what you wish, then go ahead with it. We’ll follow whatever decision you make.
That’s how the current “Knights” will live.
All I did was destroy “Knights” and break it into pieces, but you guys restored “Knights” to its former glory at the very last moments.
That’s what makes “Knights” so strong right now, right? Probably. I dunno.
Tsukasa: Why do you sound like that? Are you really okay? It’s been a while since I last saw you in such low spirits…
Makoto: It’s probably because Izumi-san said some pretty hurtful things again, right?
Izumi: What do you mean by “again”? I’ve never hurt you before, Yuu-kun!
Mao: I’m scared to see what this guy’s brain is like on the inside, but sometimes I’m jealous.
Subaru: ? Whaddya mean?
Mao: You’re someone from that side too, huh, Subaru.
Subaru: ? ? ?
Leo: Sena’s got nothing to do with it~... I’m just depressed because the song I recently made got completely rejected.
They flatter me and say I’m a genius composer or whatnot, so I guess I got carried away. I can’t believe how depressed I got myself.
Izumi: Your new song got rejected? What do you mean? By who? Tenshouin!?
Leo: Don’t blame everything on Tenshi. Anyway~ I meant to say that I made a new song just for the “SS” Finals today.
I figured it would help you guys…
But when I went to show it to the “General Leader”, he didn’t even listen to it and got angry, saying, “Don’t do anything unnecessary”.
It was something unnecessary, huh~ Sorry~... Actually, I kinda lost all my energy because I felt so bad.
Izumi: He didn’t even listen to it? Why not? Everyone at Yumenosaki knows your songs are the strongest “weapon” out there.
Ritsu: The “General Leader” is “Eden”, right? They’re part of CosPro so it’s only natural they wouldn’t know about the common knowledge at Yumenosaki.
Arashi: But Tomoe-senpai and the other guy were originally Yumenosaki students, weren’t they?
Leo: Uuu~... I bet it’s just because my song wasn’t any good~... I thought I was a genius but I guess that wasn’t true~...
Izumi: Oh, geez, stop being so wishy-washy! You’re really getting on my nerves!
Rei: Hmm. How intriguing.
What an odd response. In my opinion, that’s where the key to unravelling the mystery behind this year’s “SS” lies.
Izumi: What the–!?
Subaru: Ahaha. Long time no see~ You’re as elusive as always, Sakuma-senpai ♪
Ritsu: Hello? Security? There’s an intruder inside our practice room right now.
Rei: Spare me~... It’s rare for us to be on the same team. Let’s get along now, Ritsu ♪
Ritsu: Maa-kun, I’m scared~... A stranger is talking to me like they know me~...
Mao: There, there.
…Umm, what business did you have with us, Sakuma-senpai?
Rei: I see you’ve gotten quite used to us now, Isara-kun.
Kukuku. I saw a rather nostalgic scene and came to visit.
I’m glad to see you’re having a pleasant chat together, “Trickstar” and “Knights” ♪
Subaru: Ahaha. I guess it is pretty nostalgic now that you mention it. You also came to check in on us during our battle with “Knights” for the first “DDD”, right?
Rei: Indeed. Nostalgic it is but it wasn’t that long ago, either. I’m sure you’re all quite different compared to back then.
But comparing the past with the present and thinking about the things you’ve gained or lost is most definitely not meaningless.
You can also gain confidence by feeling how far you’ve come.
Indulging yourself in reminiscence before a big performance is also one form of entertainment.
Izumi: So what are you doing here? Just to chat, Sakuma? Looks like someone’s got time on their hands – I’ve always hated that part about you! Acting like you’re some bigshot!
Rei: I get that a lot but I didn’t expect to hear that from you, Sena-kun.
Putting that aside, there’s something on my mind. I’m checking up on everyone in the “White Team” while also conducting my investigation.
It’s all done in order to prevent a great disaster that’s much larger than the frustration I felt during the Qualifying Rounds. Although, the one heralding that news should be an angel and not a demon.
Leo: Whaddya talking about~? I can never understand a word you’re saying!
Rei: The ordinary language I’m using is nowhere near as complete as the music you create, Tsukinaga-kun.
In any case, I’m not here to interrupt your practice, so I shall announce my important matter and leave.
An “oracle” will most likely be delivered to the “White Team” during the Finals.
Leo: An “oracle”...?
Rei: I have already received one. It looks like this – a letter.
If the author is the “General Leader” – Nagisa Ran from “Eden” – then you’d best heed his advice.
But if it’s from Hiyori Tomoe from “Eve”, the other wing of “Eden”...
Then, you must not believe or follow his words.

Tumblr media
Takuma Inui :
◈ Mid to high range ◈ Very edgy and rough. Can also be a bit emo ◈ Quite competitive and intense ◈ Stutters when embarrassed (tsundere)
Lines :
[neutral] “Hmph, you’re not bad. But you still have a long way to go if you want to reach my level.”
[irritated] “I hate wishy-washy people like you. Stay away from me, you hear?”
[angry] “Cut it with the lineage bullshit. Being related to that poor excuse of man is a curse, not a privilege.”
[embarrassed] “I-I’m not b-blushing! Y-You’re just being unreasonably k-kind and I find it weird! That’s all, I swear!”
[in love] “I always thought love was for fools. But right now, I don’t mind being a little foolish, if it means I can be with you.”
Tumblr media
Arashi Hoshino :
◈ Low to mid range ◈ Usually has a lazy and disinterested tone ◈ Very smooth and flirty when he gets going. Drops one-liners like he’s God’s gift to women (and men, of course) ◈ Struggles with self-esteem ◈ Basically, the “play-boy”
Lines :
[neutral] “As long as someone wants this face and this body, then everything’s fine with me.”
[thoughtful] “Hm, you think this is wrong? But I’m just doing what they want me to...”
[flirty] “You’re an interesting person. I think we can get along〜”
[conflicted] “This isn’t good. If you’re this kind to me, I might depend on you too...”
[in love] “This feeling, it’s called ‘love’, isn’t it? My heart hurts so much yet I feel like I can do anything when I’m with you. So please, I’m begging you - stay with me from now on.”

Day 4 - Opportunity
“I’m sorry, did you just say that you and Aubinaux were planning to delve into the Void?” Kaen asked incredulously, but with a large grin on her face. “And you didn’t think to ask me about this!?”
Syngigeim softly sighed. “I mean, this is me informing you. These Free Company meetings after finding such massive undertakings?”
Aubinaux quickly piped up. “Syngigeim and I discussed this and us two will be taking the point on this one. Especially because of that stone she has that calls upon whomever she wants at any time.”
Kaen quickly raised her hand. “I’ll be joining you on that, thank you very much.”
“Me too!” Haritt shouted. “This is intra-world travel! I don’t know about you lot but I sure do want to see what all else is out there! Also not having to rely on Syngigeim if I want to check in on home.”
Eleone also gently raised her hand. “If Kaen’s going, I’m in as well. Cecetu?”
“Maybe. Depends on who’s going in with what,” Cecetu replied.
“Of course, I can not be ignored in this!” Yamir shouted, standing up from his chair. “It’s a matter that concerns my nation’s satrap and besides which, I deeply empathize with Varshan’s need to find his sister. Speaking of which, Sanda!” He said, turning to the Au Ra. “My friend, we have not journeyed much at all and-”
“I’m going,” Arashi instead spoke up and said. “Syn’s already got enough adventures with other people. I want to go on this one. Besides, someone has to keep an eye on stick boy.”
“Well, I suppose getting to know your sister shall suffice instead!” Yamir said, turning to Arashi.
Syngigeim sighed and took out a journal. “Let’s just make this easy and anyone who’s interested in fighting sign here, please. Make it easier for me to organize and plan this out. And please list what jobs you wish to bring to the fights,” she said scribbling something up top and passing it over to Aubinaux before it made it’s rounds around the table. Kaen signed her name and her two jobs, Astrologian and Reaper. She had high hopes she’d get to see at least something of the Void.

so, josie and the pussycats. you all know the band - and the movie, and the comics. but did you know that the movie just!! celebrated it’s sixteenth anni? probably not but that’s where this little idea sprouted from: nostalgia. tl;dr: what you’re about to read is about two group (one all girl band, one all boy pop group) and their ... uh, journey together, per say. there’s a lot of details that still need to be figured out such as the names of both groups, the name of their company and where the plot is set in (though i figure los angeles is going to make the most sense) but some of that can be figured out when a few of the characters are snatched up. i’m going to be putting the blurbs i put together behind a cut, but before i do that here’s some fast details on what is going to be sought out through the plot:
what is being looked for: 5/7 members of an all boy pop group (as the girl group is now filled up). when i say “all girl” and “all boy” that’s not to be taken completely literally so if anyone has an interest in making one of the characters nonbinary, etc. then that’s totally cool! i also want there to be diversity in the faces used. ages can be toyed with a bit. i’m thinking twenty-two to twenty-five with the girl group (but the alexandra can be a bit older if the alexander ends up being so, unless she’s taken first), and twenty-two to twenty-eight with the boy group.
anyway, here we go!
-- a quick note that i took some liberates in creating the blurbs below ... as you can probably see. i featured characters from three difference versions of josie and the pussycats (the comic series, the original animated series and the 2011 film), along with characters from some other archie comics such as sabrina the teenage witch. also keep in mind that you don’t have to abide strictly by that is said in the blurb - they’re just bases for the character. you can work around what is written and do whatever you want to make them much more ... dimensional.
background: a local girl band that ran into random luck while playing at a badly promoted underground rock festival. was signed by the company partially due to their looks, but also because they wanted something "fresh and new" to put out. the company doesn't take their sound or dedicated toward music seriously and it pisses them off but they're all determined to represent girl power, female musicianship, etc. to the masses. ■ similar to: lillix, shonen knife, dum dum girls, the bangles, the donnas, scandal, sleater-kinney, stereophony, etc. in concept.
the josie: lead singer, lead guitarist and primary lyricist. one of the two founding members of the band, along with the valerie. a bit of a scatterbrained oddball, has difficulty deciding what she wants but well meaning and dedicated to her craft. has always dreamt of becoming a musician and is seen as both the face and driving force of the band. childhood friends and in a long term flirtationship with the alan m. (britt)
the melody: drummer. childhood friend of the valerie and first official recruit to the band. known more for her looks than for her drumming skills - which are very great, thank you very much. happy-go-lucky, lives with her head up in the clouds, kind of a space cadet and a tad bit over emotional but passionate, loving and supportive of those around her. (kari)
the valerie: bassist and primary composer. one of the two founding members of the band, along with the josie. loyal, headstrong, opinionated, levelheaded. has taken on the (hardass) motherly role in the band ... and also with some others. [note: character must have a black face claim.] (cass)
the sabrina: secondary guitarist and lyricist. second to be recruited to the band, not long after moving to the city with her family. persistent, honest, flirtatious, very spunky and often the type to not look before she jumps into something. (maddie)
the pepper: rhythm guitarist. third and final to be recruited to the band. childhood friend of the josie. intelligent with a sharp and cynical wit, calm and a bit more emotionally reserved than the other members. (faith)
the alexandra: keyboardist. the final member to join the group ... somewhat to the dismay of the others. twin sister of the alexander and former tag along, she was asked to join the group during a moment of weakness ... and need for a keyboardist. blunt, often crude, scheming, often hateful and self-centered and very, very misunderstood, her relationship with the others is ... shaky (and a bit comical) at best. (emma)
the alexander: band manager and reluctant roadie if needed. answered an ad for a manager when the band first formed and the members have ... kind of, sort of regretted letting him take the job ever since. rich, temperamental, wishy washy, spontaneous and ... not very good or dependable at his job. twin brother of the alexandra. (millie)
background: your typical pop boy group. half of the original members (the dj, the les, the albert and the sock) trained together for years, originally being told that they were going to debut to the public as a harmonizing quartet ala boys ii men before the remaining three members (the travis, the marco and the alan m) were brought in and they became [insert group name here]. they debuted to immediate overwhelming stardom and, despite the fact that their fanbase is still incredibly dedicated, the company is trying to do them in a bit because they feel that they need to "move on" to something fresh and new, aka: the girl band. ■ similar to: backstreet boys, n*sync, new kids on the block, bts, exo, super junior, arashi, the jonas brothers, one direction, etc. in both popularity and sound.
the dj: main vocalist, main dancer and leader. sarcastic and usually calm, but not afraid to take charge (both due to his leader position and in general) or bite back if need be. usually the spokesperson for the group on top of the "guide" for the other members.
the travis: lead rapper. always tired, easily frustrated, the first to complain and the first to give up when something doesn’t go his way. raised with a silver spoon in his mouth and spotlight on his head so it’s somewhat difficult at times for him to share that with others. childhood friend of the alan m.
the marco: subvocalist. self-proclaimed leader of the group despite the fact that the dj has the official title under his belt. loud and, as some would say, a bit on the obnoxious side. reminiscent of a frat or party boy, sometimes vulgar.
the les: lead vocalist. sensitive and shy. one of the least popular members of the group due to how quiet he is. the type that has a lot to say but only does when either there's a dire need for something to be said or he has no other choice.
the alan m: vocalist and lyricist. childhood friend of both the josie and the travis. was given the "mysterious heartthrob" role by the company when, in reality, he's far from that. self-confident and crafty but somewhat of an airhead, though still well meaning. in a flirtationship with the josie. (bri)
the albert: main dancer and subvocalist. mischievous, something of a goofball, somewhat sensitive. the type to change their personality and style to fit both new situations and new groups of people that they meet up with. (kae)
the sock: main rapper and lead dancer. sporty - considered a career in soccer or baseball before turning to music. easily plays into the "dumb jock" stereotype but he's quick on his feet and more witty than people give him credit for.

FFXIV Write 2023 Day 28 - Blunt
“You’re dying.” Y’shtola was through the door without allowing a word of protest, Ryne trailing more sheepishly after her and ducking under Arashi’s arm. With a huff Arashi shut the door behind them, turning to face the pair and ignoring the man only she could see standing just behind them.
“And good evening to you too, Y’sholta, how fare you this fine night?” She didn’t need mistress Rhul’s acid tongue, not with her head feeling ready to split open. It didn’t help that Y’shtola was right. But it didn’t help anyone to shout it from the heavens, especially when Sanda was mercifully still in the dark about it.
Y’shtola met her snark with the flat look it deserved. “Don’t try to brush me off with your cheek. Urianger may be content to keep his silence but I am most certainly not.” Her ears were flat against her head, tail swishing dangerously behind her. But it was Ryne’s worried glance that held Arashi in place. In those new blue eyes Arashi saw a very different girl, six years and a world away, wondering if it was going to be alright. She’d let that girl down then. She was preparing to do it again.
Arashi rubbed her aching temples and crossed the distance between them. “Fine, yes, I’m dying. The Light is killing me. What good does admitting it do? It’s not as if I can stop now, is it? Not when we only have a single Lightwarden to end.” One more. Just one more. Then she could rest.
“And when that Lightwarden’s resplendent aether is too much for you to take, what then? Would you have us simply stand by and watch our champion die?” Y’shtola’s tone was arch, but she couldn’t hide the undercurrent of fear underneath it. “Are you truly so self-absorbed that you’d just shoulder this burden alone with nary a thought for what you’ll be leaving behind? Who will tell her, with the rest of us stranded on this reflection?” Arashi flinched at the barb, not missing Ryne’s small gasp at the same time.
“Do you think that’s not all I’ve thought about once I realised what was going on, Y’shtola?” Rage flooded Arashi just as the Light had. She didn’t realise her tightly clenched fists, didn’t quite register that she’d stepped so close to the sorceress. Y’shtola was, of course, unimpressed. “Every night I lie awake and think about her, waiting for me to come home! I think about her slowly realising I’m not coming back! I think about her mourning for me, coming to resent me, dying of Black bloody Rose because of me! Because I failed her! If I have to push myself to the brink to end this, so be it! Better that than her and everyone else I love dying!”
“And what about us, then? What do you expect us to do when the aether in you finally twists you into a Lightwarden? Do we truly mean so little to you? Does Fareena, does Stalwart, does Sanda, do I mean absolutely nothing, just meaningless noise? Are we not friends, Arashi Washi? Do my feelings not matter?” It was the break in Y’shtola’s voice that struck home. Arashi backed away unsteadily, blinking rapidly. Ryne took the opportunity to step between the pair.
“Please stop.” Ryne’s voice was barely a whisper compared to the two, but the steel beneath it was all the Minfilia of old. It was enough to break the tension fully. With a wordless nod Arashi and Y’shtola took seats at the table, Ryne standing between them still. Arashi took a steadying breath, hoping that the other denizens of the Pendants hadn’t heard their little spat.
“So what do you intend to do about it?” Arashi had to try hard to keep the hope from her voice, but she managed it. Barely. “Unless you’ve found some miracle cure in your dusty old tomes, I fail to see that we have any way out of this.”
“Not a cure, but perhaps we can stave it off somewhat?” Ryne’s voice had all the hope Arashi had shoved aside. “I’m still the Oracle of Light, perhaps I can help calm your aether! And the Exarch-”
“Well, the less said about that man, the better.” Y’shtola’s icy tone cut through Ryne with practised nonchalance. “Whatever his agenda, I’ve heard quite enough about him for one day. Ryne, do what you can to keep our friend alive. Arashi, hold still and don’t complain. And don’t glare at me either, it’s childish.” Arashi turned her head to scowl at the wall instead, but she didn’t complain as Ryne went to work. Once again she tried to ignore Ardbert staring back at her. If she didn’t, she’d have to acknowledge the look in his eyes. The worry. The fear. The pity.
And beneath it all, the loneliness. As Ryne chattered and Y’shtola snarked, Arashi was elsewhere. She was in Ala Mhigo, envisioning a woman lying anxiously in bed, desperately hoping that her love would return. Praying for it. Then she was barely a few rooms away, picturing her sister straining her hearing to pick out all the words behind layers of brickwork. Furious and terrified and trying to deny the truth she’d already figured out.
Arashi had never felt more alone.

FFXIV Write 2023 Day 27 - Sole
If Arashi had been told as a child that she would one day be sitting at a table sipping coffee with a picturesque view of the end of the universe, watching carefully a man who had all-too-recently made it his life’s purpose to duel her to the death, she’d have said she didn’t talk to strangers, especially those that talked nonsense. If she had been told the same thing as an adult, she’d have given the teller a flat look and walked away. And yet, she mused, sipping just-slightly-too-hot coffee, here she was. And there he was. In a constructed body, true, and more likely just a lingering echo, but Zenos viator Galvus sat opposite her all the same. Watching her intently through a glowing helmet.
Arashi had noticed his attention several days earlier while assisting the staff of the Last Dregs with their maintenance of Elysion. One of the Karellians had been watching her intently as she worked, not even bothering to be subtle as their gaze followed her to and fro. Arashi wasn’t unused to such attention (being the Warrior of Light led to someone getting quite used to such things), but something about it felt uncomfortably familiar. And so Arashi had hatched a plan. As she worked, the Karellian watched her. As the Karellian worked, Arashi watched them. A good deal more subtly, of course.
It was the strangest thing. It was obvious in the being’s movements that they were the former crown prince. The practised fluidity. The predator’s gaze lingering over his fellow workers, sizing them all up. The voice (when Arashi dared to get close enough to hear it) was him to a tee, even muffled though it was by his helmet. And yet… He was gentle. He was compliant. He worked without complaint and took orders without question. He laboured, for the first time in his life, for the betterment of others. It was like watching a tiger take up dancing lessons.
It hadn’t lasted long before he had noticed her. But he hadn’t exploded into violence or worse, one of his uncomfortably passionate rants. He appeared nervous, more than anything. As if he hadn’t been watching her every move for days on end. It was, truth be told, the only reason she hadn’t cut him down where he stood. Instead, against her better judgement, she had chosen to “escort” him to a quiet table and a pair of hot drinks. Against her worst expectations, he had accepted without a word.
The silence stretched on dangerously, the outcome of the confrontation hanging on a blade’s edge of unspoken words. Truthfully, Arashi wasn’t sure what to say. She’d thought the man dead and… well, not buried but safely filed away at the edge of space. Apparently the ambient dynamis had other ideas. What do you say to the ghost of a man you killed twice over? Finally, Arashi settled on:
“Why are you here? How are you here?”
The helmet gave no emotions away, but Zenos shrugged in what Arashi could only guess was an awkward fashion. It looked unnatural on him, stolen body or otherwise. “Some trick of our slain foe, I can only imagine. I was ready to embrace my end by your hand, my friend, but to my utmost displeasure, I awoke again. It appears my tale is not yet told, much though I laboured to write such a perfect conclusion.”
Yes, it’s definitely him alright. Arashi stifled an irritated sigh. If she ever encountered Meteion out there in the stars again she would have strong words for the little songbird. Still… “Next question. You knew I was here for weeks and did nothing. Why?”
Another shrug, Zenos’s helmet turning away. His slightly tinny voice sounded, for the first time, uncertain. Arashi took another sip from her steaming mug. “I… You were the victor. We gave everything we had in our clash and in the end it was you who walked away. This is a soldier’s body, but it has grown weary of war. And so, it seems, have I.”
Zenos didn’t mind the spray of coffee that erupted out of Arashi’s mouth and splattered his gold-and-blue helmet. The revelation had surprised him too. But the truth was, as he had laid breathing his last next to his friend, he had only felt… empty. Unfulfilled. He had challenged the mightiest warrior in all of creation, pushed her beyond her mighty limits, achieved his heart’s desire… and had died feeling only like he had somehow missed the point of it all. Arashi had finally finished coughing up her coffee and cleaning up her mess. It was strange, seeing such an unguarded side of her. Strange to see her out of her usual armour as well. Like looking through a soldier’s belongings and finding a pair of knitting needles. How much of you have I never seen, my friend? What joys have you known outside of battle? How have you managed to find them?
Arashi looked at the man in front of her in disbelief. Zenos bloody Galvus, monster of the empire, hunter of the Warrior of Light to the literal end of existence, was tired of war? It was laughable beyond belief. A cruel joke from a crueller man. And yet, watching from the shadows, using all of her sister’s hard-taught lessons, she had seen the truth in it. Seen him choosing a path without violence, seen him learning how to nurture and grow instead of maiming and slaying. Perhaps it was all an act for her benefit. But she suspected not.
“You’re serious, aren’t you?” The words were appraising, an undercurrent of curiosity and hope inextricably tied together. She wanted to believe, deep down. Zenos couldn’t help but look at the blade between them. The blade she had used to do battle with him. Spattered with coffee now, rather than blood. But no less dangerous for it. She could have cut him down in an instant.
“I am. I know not what I am, truly. Some echo of the man I used to be, perhaps. His last regrets given form. Or perhaps I am myself entire, given an undeserved last chance. I embraced the role of a monster wholeheartedly, threw myself into the role without regret, and yet now I find myself here questioning the point of the whole insipid play. I, who wrote its words with blood and fire.” He couldn’t meet her eyes even with the helmet protecting his gaze. It didn’t feel right.
“Let me ask you a question in turn. You surely knew who I was before confronting me. I made no effort to disguise my observations, nor to mask myself as you watched me in turn. Yet you have not cut me down. I am certain that you still wish to do so, or else you would not have come armed as you are. Why have you not done so?”
It was a question Arashi knew was coming, but she still found herself unable to answer it. Was it that she wanted to believe even he could change his ways? Was she curious to know what had stayed his hand from continuing their contest? Those may have been part of it, but…
“I suppose I’m tired too, in the end.” The words felt right as they left her mouth. “I’m tired of looking over my shoulder expecting to see you there. I’m tired of trying to prepare any countermeasure I can for when you come for my loved ones. I’m tired of sleepless nights spent wondering if I’ll walk away from our next battle or not. I’m tired of the play. I wanted to know if you were too.”
Zenos nodded, not trusting himself to say anything. It was a terrifying thing to put away his role after so long, but it felt necessary; vital, even. He knew not how long he had left to toil amongst the stars, but he knew with certainty that he could only do so by letting go of what he was. All of it, the whirling passion and the crushing boredom and the singular, incandescent spark that had driven him to such a wildfire of damnation. It was terrifying, truth be told. But he had never felt so free in doing so.
Arashi was silent for a long moment. Then, incredibly, she smiled. At him, her greatest enemy, his only friend. “That’s what I was hoping for.” She placed her mug on the table between them, sitting next to her massive blade in a ridiculous manner. Her hand was outstretched. “Let’s shake on it, then. You give up your little crusade and I don’t put you in a shallow grave.”
Zenos chuckled, gloved hand meeting Arashi’s as they sealed the deal. It was an impossible dream, setting aside his only joy in life in a desperate pursuit of other, simpler pleasures. His true self would have railed against such a thing, fought with gnashing teeth and ripping claw until all that he had left was unmade as well. But he wasn’t that man. He was… not an echo, for an echo could only repeat the voice of its source. But something else. Something new.
They spoke for a while, of the cafe, of the harvest, of the clutch of dragon eggs and the recent hatchlings. Of all manner of unspeakably tedious things. It was… nice to enjoy such base things. How strange that he had never realised it before. Finally, Arashi made to stand, empty cup and neatly cleaned sword held in each hand.
“I’ll let you get back to it,” she said, trying and failing to hide the smile in her eyes. “Keep this up, Zenos. You’re almost pleasant company.” And then she was gone, vanishing in a casual pulse of aether and leaving him alone amongst the stars again.
Zenos would not last forever. A lingering echo will eventually fade to nothing. But the time he had left he spent working with his fellow lost souls. Forging bonds. Making friends. Finally seeing, after so much time, the true value of it all. And when at last he let go and joined whatever was left of him in the aetherial sea, he found himself content. And Arashi, watching him go, felt something she never thought she would feel for the monster.
Grief.
