Theridiid cobwebs and linyphiid sheetwebs (A–B) the cobweb of Parasteatoda (Achaearanea) valoka from New Britain. The web is unique in how a leaf is bent over and used as the substrate for the entire web, yet it illustrates common themes of typical cobwebs—a central to peripheral irregular sheet forming a retreat for the spider with sticky gumfooted threads radiating from it and attached to the substrate (A), with sticky globules restricted to the lower part of the gumfoot lines (B). (C) a ‘star web’ (Achaearanea sp. juvenile) as built by many Achaearanea/Parasteatoda species, with a semi-global central retreat, and radiating gumfoot lines. The spider rests in the centre of the ‘globe’ and seems well protected from larger predators. (D) Theridion sp. that spins a simple two-dimensional sheet with sticky globules distributed throughout the sheet. The spider has a silk retreat under the leaf. (E)Helvibis cf. thorelli, with long gumfoot lines radiating from a silk retreat under a leaf. (F) subsocial web of Anelosimus may, a ‘basket’ shaped sheet web with knockdown lines above the sheet. Hello could you help me identify a spider? She's in Chicago, IL, and she lives outside our high-rise window, and we have named her Cheryl. She comes out at 8pm every night and has a handful of much smaller spiders who seem to hang out in her web system with her. We are fascinated by her but don't know enough to research her properly. Thank you!

iNat says Larinioides, which looks about right. smaller ones could be males, which are often much smaller than females in araneids, or could be kleptoparasites who take advantage of a bigger web to get or steal their meals

Orb-weaver spiders - Oil Paint

Orb-weaver spiders are members of the spider family Araneidae. They are the most common group of builders of spiral wheel-shaped webs often found in gardens, fields, and forests. The English word "orb" can mean "circular", hence the English name of the group. Araneids have eight similar eyes, hairy or spiny legs, and no stridulating organs.

The family has a cosmopolitan distribution, including many well-known large or brightly colored garden spiders. With 3,067 species in 177 genera worldwide, the Araneidae comprise the third-largest family of spiders (behind the Salticidae and Linyphiidae). Araneid webs are constructed in a stereotypical fashion, where a framework of nonsticky silk is built up before the spider adds a final spiral of silk covered in sticky droplets.

Orb webs are also produced by members of other spider families. The long-jawed orb weavers (Tetragnathidae) were formerly included in the Araneidae; they are closely related, being part of the superfamily Araneoidea. The family Arkyidae has been split off from the Araneidae. The cribellate or hackled orb-weavers (Uloboridae) belong to a different group of spiders. Their webs are strikingly similar, but use a different kind of silk.
