Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas in The English Patient (Anthony Minghella, 1996)
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe, Kristin Scott Thomas, Naveen Andrews, Colin Firth, Julian Wadham, Jürgen Prochnow, Kevin Whately, Clive Merrison, NIno Castelnuovo. Screenplay: Anthony Minghella, based on a novel by Michael Ondaatje. Cinematography: John Seale. Production design: Stuart Craig. Film editing: Walter Murch. Music: Gabriel Yared.
The "prestige motion picture" is a familiar genre: It's typically a movie derived from a distinguished literary source or a biopic about a distinguished historic figure, with a cast full of major actors, but designed not so much to advance the art of film as to attract critical raves and awards -- particularly Oscars. There are plenty of examples among the best-picture Oscar winners: A Man for All Seasons (Fred Zinnemann, 1966), Chariots of Fire (Hugh Hudson, 1981), Gandhi (Richard Attenborough, 1982), Amadeus (Milos Forman, 1984), Out of Africa (Sydney Pollack, 1985), and The Last Emperor (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1987). (The 1980s seemed to be particularly dominated by prestige-seekers.) The trouble is that once the initial attraction of these films has faded, few people seem to remember them fondly or want to watch them again. I'd rather watch The Battle of Algiers (Gillo Pontecorvo, 1966) today than sit through A Man for All Seasons, and I would say the same for Atlantic City (Louis Malle, 1981), Blade Runner (Ridley Scott, 1982), Starman (John Carpenter, 1984), Prizzi's Honor (John Huston, 1985), and Moonstruck (Norman Jewison, 1987) when put in competition with the prestige best-picture winners of their respective years. So I watched The English Patient last night to test my theory that prestige movies don't hold up over time. It fits the category precisely: It's based on a Booker Prize-winning novel by Michael Ondaatje; it has a distinguished cast, three of whom were nominated for acting Oscars, including Juliette Binoche, who won; it earned raves from The New Yorker, the New York Times, and Roger Ebert; it raked in 12 Oscar nominations and won nine of them -- picture, supporting actress, director Anthony Minghella, cinematographer John Seale, art direction, costumes, sound, film editor Walter Murch (who also shared in the Oscar for sound), and composer Gabriel Yared. And sure enough, there are films from 1996 that I'd rather watch again than The English Patient, including  Fargo (Joel Coen and Ethan Coen), Lone Star (John Sayles), and Trainspotting (Danny Boyle). But I also have to say that of all the "prestige" best picture winners, The English Patient makes the best case for the genre. It's a good movie, with a mostly well-crafted screenplay by Minghella from a book many thought unfilmable, though it still tries to carry over too much from the novel, such as the character of David Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe), whose function in the film, to provoke Almásy (Ralph Fiennes) into uncovering his story, could have been served equally well by Hana (Binoche). But the performances still seem fresh and committed. Binoche, though designated a supporting actress, carries the film by turning Hana into a kind of central consciousness. I was surprised at how much heat is generated by Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas as Katharine, considering that they are both usually rather icy performers. There are some beautifully staged scenes, like the one in which Kip (Naveen Andrews) "flies" Hana so she can view the frescoes high in a church. And Murch's sound editing gives the film a marvelous sonic texture, starting with the mysterious clinking sounds at the film's beginning, which are then revealed to be the bottles carried by an Arab vendor of potions. Murch's ear and Seale's eye make the film an enduring audiovisual treat.

Finalist for the Man Booker International Prize 2015. Buttologist is down on his uppers. His girlfriend, Original Colour, has cleared out of their Paris studio and run off to the Congo with a vertically challenged drummer known as The Mongrel. She’s taken their daughter with her. Meanwhile, a racist neighbour spies on him something wicked, accusing him of ‘digging a hole in the Dole’. And his drinking buddies at Jips, the Afro-Cuban bar in Les Halles, pour scorn on Black Bazaar, the journal he keeps to log his sorrows. There are days when only the Arab in the corner shop has a kind word; while at night his dreams are stalked by the cannibal pygmies of Gabon. Then again, Buttologist wears no ordinary uppers. He has style, bags of it (suitcases of crocodile and anaconda Westons, to be precise). He’s a dandy from the Bacongo district of Brazzaville – AKA a sapeur or member of the Society of Ambience-makers and People of Elegance. But is flaunting sartorial chic against tough times enough for Buttologist to cut it in the City of Light?

“Booth’s translation honors the elliptical rhythms of Arabic and the language’s rich literary heritage. She imbues the book’s numerous poetic extracts with lyricism and devotedly preserves the rhymes and cadences of its proverbs. (“The feet walk fast for the loving heart’s sake, but when you feel no longing, your feet drag and ache.”) Yet there is no doubt that this is a contemporary novel, insistent and alive.”

i like to think booker would open a bookstore during his exile, something small and unremarkable but some place where he can make himself a home that’s just for him, desks and shelves overflowing with books and journals filled with his thoughts and things he loves, and things he thinks the guard will like - a restaurant nicky would love and a local artist joe and nile would love to see, a new baklava for andy to try. it’s a place where he can interact with people again and speak to them about things that don’t matter, not to them at least, but to him it’s everything to hear that bakery down the street is still open, he hadn’t been to it in nearly a hundred years and he’s glad to hear it’s still in the family, he’s always liked the pierres. and it’s everything when he hears people complain about the new modern buildings being put up right next to the old architecture of the city, to them it’s replacing its beauty but to him it’s a reminder of how long his life has truly been as he remembers when some of these buildings in the square next to his shop were being built
he’ll sell lots of poetry and the classics, not just in french but in italian and arabic as well, the feeling of being surrounded by familiar languages was a small comfort but it was something. he’ll run his fingers along the spines of the shakespeare collection, remembering joe and nickys stories, none of them good but all of them entertaining. his heart pangs even as he wants to laugh as he imagines the man taking notes as he listened to the way joe spoke about nicky, and a smile forms on his lips as he imagines joes offense as he later read watered down lines that made a pathetic attempt to capture the nature of his words and affection towards the man he loves.
he’ll have a decent rare book collection, none of his own prized collection of course, those are far too old and hard to explain, not to mention many of them were gifts and he’ll once again think of the last one he got, the don quixote that’s currently sitting on his side table, the one he’s read over a dozen times, appreciating andy’s little comments in the margins and feeling that overwhelming guilt and sadness - not only did he do this to himself and to them but he may never see her again and this book is all he has left. he authenticates all the books himself, buying the many forgeries of his own that are brought to him, not to sell (well maybe to rich snobs) but to remember his life that simultaneously feels like a lifetime and seconds ago and he’ll feel like the world shifts as he looks in the mirror, still the same. he dodges questions about how he learned so much at his ‘young’ age about rare books, always blaming some mysterious great mentor that he only refers to as andy but never reveals more than that.
he’ll build himself a small life outside the guard, helping people where he can, he has money after all and plenty of knowledge to do enough good. but always careful to stay half in the shadows, that’s the life of an immortal after all but he’ll begin to appreciate the small things again. he’ll plant gladiolus in remembrance of his family and properly work through his grief and allow himself to be free of his guilt eventually - not just yet but at least set himself on the path. he’ll relearn cities he hasn’t been to in forever, smiling at the neighborhood kids spending their free time roaming the streets with bare feet just like his kids used to do, laughing and smiling and using their pocket money to buy as many sweets as possible and giving food to the neighborhood strays (which he absolutely keeps water and food out for)
it’ll be slow, but it’s what he needs. time to think and allow himself to grow and become someone worthy of being in the guard, worthy of having his family who loved him in spite of all his flaws and become someone he sees as worthy of living this life

10 Most Influential African Women
Africa has many influential women who have greatly aided in putting Africa on the globe in leadership, business, sports, arts, and other spheres and domains.
Discover more: 10 Richest Black Women in the World
We are going to look at those self-made women who rose to influential position mainly through their own efforts rather than being heirs or beneficiaries of undue favors. Here we go!
10. Lupita Nyog’o – Kenya
Lupita Nyong’o is an Oscar-winning actress who came to fame due to her role in the “12 Years A Slave”. She is the first Kenyan actress to have won an Oscar Academy Award in Film and Theater.
She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, in this film in 2013. She has also acted in several films, including East River, My Genes, Steve McQueen’s, Star Wars, The Jungle Book, and lately, Black Panthers.
She has been an inspiration for African women interested in entering the entertainment industry. Apart from acting, she has been an inspiration to women who would like to keep their appearance as natural as possible.
Unlike most African female stars in the entertainment industry, she has not had the urge to bleach her skin. This has led her to appear in several international magazines as an “authentic African woman.” We know, sad but true.
9. Salwa Akhannouch – Morocco
Salwa Akhannouch is a leading Moroccan female entrepreneur. She is not only one of the most influential African women but also one of the most influential Arabic women.

8. Bethlehem Tilahun Alemu – Ethiopia
Founder of soulRebels, Bethlehem Alemu is a household name in Ethiopia. She cut out her niche in the soles of the African shoes – making shoes out of recycled materials.
soulRebels is largely a social enterprise that not only generates profits but also helps to sustain a clean environment through recycling of materials that would have otherwise added to the increasing mountain of garbage in Addis Ababa and characteristic of most African cities.
Further, than that, soulRebels has helped relieve the acute unemployment crisis is Ethiopia by providing income opportunities to those living in poor slums of Addis Ababa. Thus, through her enterprise, she has profitably participated in alleviating poverty.
As Ethiopia’s un-announced cultural ambassador, Bethlehem Alemu, she has promoted Ethiopia’s traditional shoes, namely, “selate” and “barabasso” to international fame by adding to them a stylish dose of modern appeal.
Her ingenious entrepreneurship has led her to establish international stores in many parts of the world, including Switzerland, Taiwan, and Singapore.
7. Caster Semenya – South Africa
Born in 1991, in South Africa, Caster Semenya is a world-renowned athlete. She has won several international medals in athletics, including the most prestigious one – 800m Olympic Gold Medal.

Some have questioned her gender and even damaging rumors on her personal life which would have otherwise caused great mental, emotional and psychological anguish to many haven’t deterred her.
