Interview with Ai Furihata
Q1. This time, the concert title is “Next SPARKLING!!”. What does “SPARKLING” mean to you?
“SPARKLING” has a bouncy, fluffy image to me. The word also means “shining” and “flashing”, so it gives me a forward-looking feeling. I think that “Next SPARKLING!!” is a song where Aqours sings about moving towards our next radiance.
Q2. Please share your honest feelings regarding Saint Snow!
We've had more chances to stand on stage with Saint Snow since the unit concert in Hakodate, and in turn, I've felt their growth. In the story, they're our fellow contestants who dream of winning “Love Live!”, and like Ruby, Leah-chan thinks a lot about her older sister, so.... That's why I'm extremely happy when we perform on stage together as Saint Aqours Snow.
Q3. Which song from the movie left a particularly strong impression on you?
“Next SPARKLING!!” did!! Even the intro—I love it, and it makes me nostalgic... The sounds bring to mind all the time that we've spent together as Aqours. And the line “Each and every one of our memories is precious~” is wonderful—it's really cool how it expresses that we can't look away from any of our memories, even the sad or painful parts. I like that the feathered outfits give the feeling of going off on a journey.
Q4. In the theme of “Hop? Stop? Nonstop!”, what have you been excited about recently?
Practicing dances to prepare for 5th Live. Performing on stage with Ruby really lifts my spirits—I'm looking forward to that. Practicing the movie songs gets me especially excited. Ruby, let's Ganbaruby together!!
Q5. Do you have any strong memories or feelings from the movie talk shows?
One thing I'm grateful for is that since we were able to do so many of these talk shows, there were people who were able to meet Aqours for the first time! I was glad that we could see so many people who couldn't make it to our concerts or events. Being able to physically feel everyone's love for “Love Live!” was great.
[Context: There were many of these movie talk shows around Japan. Before or after these particular showings of the movie, a few members would show up for about 20-30 minutes and talk a bit, especially about what they enjoyed in the movie.]
Q6. Are there any scenes in the movie that left a particularly deep impression on you?
When the six of us formed a circle before the final performance, we heard the third-years’ voices reverberating in our hearts. That’s the moment when the new Aqours was born. The movie has plenty of scenes where we form a circle, but at the very end, the tears wouldn’t stop. Once “Next SPARKLING!!” started after that, I was moved even more than before, and my tears welled up.
Q7. What scenes do you think your character shines in?
The scenes where Ruby speaks up and shares her own thoughts in front of everyone. I was happy to see so many parts where Ruby puts things into motion by sharing her thoughts. I felt like we were able to see the power hidden within Ruby again.
Q8. What do you like/where do you want to go in Numazu?
I like the beach where “Love Live! Sunshine!!” begins. At the one that it’s modeled after—Mito Beach—I’ve attended the “Candle Night” event, and it’d be great if I could go again.

Going on vacation, I end up making impulse purchases (laughs). I think to myself that “this is the only chance I’ll have to buy it”, then I find my purse strings loosening.
Q10. What’s something you want to change, and what’s something you don’t?
I want to get everyone more involved and change Aqours’ future!!! The nine of us that form Aqours can go so much further, so I want to create a future alongside everyone that’ll surpass our wildest dreams. What I don’t want to change are my feelings for Ruby. With Ruby, who changed my life, I want to keep walking… no, running by her side!

Ruby and Saburo watch the 5th live together... and something is in the works!
“What did you think?!” Ruby leaped off the couch to take out the DVD of Aqours 5th live she and Saburo had just finished watching. “It was totally sparkling, right?”
“It was really impressive! I don’t know how you can perform to that high of a standard for hours…” Saburo started at the blank screen in awe.
“Ehehe! Just a lot of practice and hard work!” Ruby’s excitement faded after she saw Saburo’s expression. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
“Ah, yes. I was just thinking about the encore. Um… Did you write Sakura Bye Bye?” A song performed by CYaRon about seeing their friends off for graduation. The bittersweet themes of the song were a little melancholy for Ruby, but he knew she was always honest about her feelings.
“W-well, Chika and You helped a lot! But yes… I wrote it for Dia. I really love that we can be school idols together, and in the same school! And I know that it can’t last forever. It hurts, but that’s what makes it so special, right?” Ruby tried to hold back a sob. “I know I shouldn’t be that sad. I’m more happy than anything.”
“Happy?”
“Mm! Happy that we could experience this! As sisters!” Ruby looked lively again.
Saburo set down the penlight he’d been waving during the show and thought to himself. What experiences did he have with his brothers? Something in common that they all wanted? Sure, there were the rap battles and all the after-school practice sessions, but that was something they were more forced into. Playing board games together and going out for the day were always nice, but they were one-off occasions. Was there something they could work towards together? Something that they were proud to work on, without any threats or fighting but just the thrill of progress and success?
“Saburo?”
He realised he was spaced out and looking at the penlight. Ichiro was no longer in school, but next year Saburo would enter his first year of high school and Jiro his third, and maybe the same one as Jiro too. An idea crossed his mind, but he thought to ask an expert before making rash decisions.
“Ruby, what’s it like being a school idol?”
“It’s so fun! I love seeing me and my friends get better every day! At first I didn’t think I had the guts to be one, but I never regretted it! There’s a lot of hard work that goes into it, but seeing the smiles of everyone on stage and in the audience is totally worth it! I’m so happy that Aqours’ message has reached all across Japan! No, the world! There’s a lot of focus that goes into performing, but one time I made eye contact with Hanamaru during one of our first live shows, and I could tell that she was really happy! Oh, and the MC sections are really fun! One time I said ‘Buu Buu Desu Wa’! Dia pretended to be mad, but it was really funny!” Ruby’s speech trailed off into laughter.
“It’s like that, huh.”
“Why did you ask? Do you know someone who wants to be a school idol?”
“…Yes.”

“Love Live! Sunshine!! The School Idol Movie Over the Rainbow” Guilty Kiss Interviews #2: Kobayashi Aika (Part 3)

--The special edition [of the Over the Rainbow Blu-ray] has a recording of the “Love Live! Sunshine!! Aqours Club Activities LIVE & FAN MEETING 2018 Subunit Battle National Tour in Tokyo”, right?
Kobayashi: You’ll be able to watch Guilty Kiss tumble down from first place...
--Any scenes you want people to pay attention to?
Kobayashi: Probably the part where we lose. (laughs) The talk portion was recorded, so you can watch us fall in the rankings in all of its glory!
In that portion, the first place team gets to sit on the highest platform, with the other platforms’ height matching the rankings. And Guilty Kiss got to experience all three of those heights, starting from the top. (laughs) The view was pretty nice from up there. But I guess that’s just how Guilty Kiss is, so I hope you watch every last bit of it (laughs).
--How would you describe Guilty Kiss in one phrase?
Kobayashi: I think of us as the “final boss”. We always come last in a lot of the orderings; the CD releases go CyaRon! -> AZALEA -> Guilty Kiss. Everyone’s thinking, “Where’s Guilty Kiss?” and we hit them with a bang.
So we’re kind of like the final boss that comes at you from behind. Like, “We won’t let you down!” and “We’ll definitely be cool!”. Recently, the ordering hasn’t really mattered, but even so, I want to continue giving off those vibes!
--Do you have any messages for the other two?
Kobayashi: I love the way that Guilty Kiss is, so please keep going with me through the good and bad times (laughs). Let’s keep being the final bosses. Love you ♡
“I want to keep being an Aqours that can love and be loved by the fans”
--So many people love Love Live! Sunshine!! and Aqours, but do you think there’s a reason that they love them this much?
Kobayashi: It’s because we love Love Live! and Love Live! Sunshine!! ourselves. And the fans who love Love Live! and Love Live! Sunshine!! just as we do match the love that we have... that’s definitely a reason for it.
I want us to keep being an Aqours that can love and be loved by the fans. We’ll keep sending out our love to everyone, and I hope that we can receiving love as Aqours from many more people.
--To love and be loved as Aqours by the fans... they certainly must feel the same way, which explains the sights that you can see at the lives.
Kobayashi: Yeah... I hope that’s the case. (laughs) It’s not every day that you have so many people who feel the same way coming together for a live, so if that’s the case, I’d be really happy!
--Please give a word to the fans who are looking forward to the Blu-ray.
Kobayashi: You’ve probably already seen it a bunch in theaters, but at home, you’ll be able to focus on it to enjoy it even more. Please watch it a bunch, make lots of discoveries, and let us know about them! I think when you see everyone in motion, you’ll once again think “This song is really nice”. And once again, I’d be really happy if you love it a lot.
And Aqours is still running forward on our path! 5th Live’s title was “Next SPARKLING!!”... “Next” means “what’s to come”, so please keep believing in Aqours from now on!

What kinds of sights and sounds will we imprint on MetLife Dome, a place already full of memories?
I'm so excited for it!
Q1. The title of this live is “Next SPARKLING!!”. What does “SPARKLING” mean to you?
When I first saw the scene where Next SPARKLING!! plays in the movie, I was hoping for there to be a future where both Chika and the rest of Aqours always have brilliant smiles on their faces. Having the word "Next" come before the "SPARKLING" makes me feel as if Next SPARKLING!! is a premonition of all the things that is yet to come for Aqours.
Q2. Tell us what you really think about Saint Snow!
Ever since we first performed together in 2018, they have given me so much support both on stage and during rehearsals, so they really are important to me. I have full confidence in their passion towards their performances, as well as how they conduct themselves on stage. They’ve become people I can talk to about anything. I believe them to be one of many amazing encounters I’ve had in my life.
Q3. Were there any songs in the movie that left an impression on you?
That'd be Hop? Stop? Nonstop!, the song that Aqours performs in the streets of Italy. I was so surprised when I first heard this amazing song! It's just so cute and catchy, it might even be a first for Aqours! I remember being really happy to be able to sing this song!
Q4. In the vein of “Hop? Stop? Nonstop!”, tell us about something exciting that’s happened to you recently!
The moment when I see myself in my mind's eye, facing my goals. I'm always excited every time I'm experiencing something new, or when I'm challenging myself to do something!
Q5. Do you have any special thoughts or memories about the stage events for the movie?
Because it was the first place we went to as Aqours, and also because it was a stage event, which brought us closer to the audience, I could really feel the warmth radiating from everyone! Their story only made it to the big screens thanks to everyone who loves this franchise, so I really value being given the opportunity to properly express my gratitude to everyone.
Q6. Did any scenes from the movie leave a particular impression on you?
Bokura no Hashitte Kita Michi wa..., right at the start. Seeing Aqours performing all around Numazu along with everyone living there made me really emotional. Also, the scene in the second half of the movie where Leah-chan started sobbing during her morning jog, frustrated at her failures, that really touched me as well. It was as if someone was clamping down on my heart.
Q7. Tell us about a scene where the character you play really shines!
The part right before Next SPARKLING!!, when Aqours forms a circle. Chika-chan's smile has always been so radiant, and that scene made me realize once again how her smile is able to illuminate everyone else in Aqours. I put everything we've built together as nine, as Aqours into that line when I was recording it.
Q8. Are there any places that you like in Numazu, or places that you’d like to visit?
That'd be Sunflower Land Floating Island! I've always wanted to visit the place, and I finally managed to do so on Chika's birthday in 2018. I managed to enjoy Numazu's atmosphere while giving a lot of thought to all kinds of things while I was there.
Note: A sunflower park on some floating islands located in West Numazu. It is open to the public and becomes a tourist destination when the sunflowers are in bloom.
Q9. Three things that you have to take with you on a trip!
Earphones
Travel tickets
Beauty products that I use at home
I try my best to live out my life normally even when I'm travelling, to give myself peace of mind.
Q10. Is there anything you want to change about yourself, or perhaps something about yourself that you know will never change?
Something I'd like to change is my negativity and lack of confidence that still pops up from time to time... Well, I sometimes think it's OK to have those parts of me around too (laughs). Things that'll never change are my love for the Love Live! franchise, as well as my feelings towards Love Live! Sunshine!! and Aqours!

SPARKLING: Bubbles popping and vanishing in a moment, like youth!
Please tell us your honest feelings regarding Saint Snow!
Saint Snow is both an important rival for Aqours and also their comrades. There's no way that Aqours would be able to grow to this point if they didn't exist. They were worthy rivals and we pushed and supported each other from the back. I daresay that even the cast members felt the same way too.
Which song from the movie left a particularly strong impression on you?
Brightest Melody. In the movie's storyline, it's the last song of Aqours as nine that represents their position, but somehow the lyrics also signify a new beginning. The first time I heard it, I felt goosebumps. And just like the title, it truly is Aqours' brightest song!
This is somewhat related to Hop? Stop? Nonstop!, but tell us something that recently made you excited!
I was excited when looking for cosmetics in the department store!
Do you have any strong memories of any feelings that you felt during the movie talk show?
We held it in various locations, so I was able to recognize once again that there are fans who support Aqours all over the country. Because of that, I feel that we must go and spread our feelings to everyone even more.
Are there any special scenes in the movie which are imprinted in your heart?
The scene immediately preceding Next SPARKLING!!, the last song. It is the scene where the six members stand in a circle and count off before they stand on stage.
What scenes do you think that the member you perform as shine in?
Every scene in which she's interacting with Chika!
What do you like/where do you want to go to in Numazu?
Grandma. They have great sweets and cake.
Three things that you have to take with you on vacation!
