my old manager sharing memes on facebook abt how we don’t need more stimulus money everyone is just lazy is hilarious when she paid me below minimum wage, didn’t want to give me my last overtime check hours, and cheated the system at the beginning of the pandemic to draw unemployment and still get the bonus money our restaurant received but that’s none of my business i guess

Devotions for Friday, April 30th, 2021
MORNING
"Thou whom my soul loveth." - Song of Song of Solomon 1:7
It is well to be able, without any "if" or "but," to say of the Lord Jesus-"Thou whom my soul loveth." Many can only say of Jesus that they hope they love him; they trust they love him; but only a poor and shallow experience will be content to stay here. No one ought to give any rest to his spirit till he feels quite sure about a matter of such vital importance. We ought not to be satisfied with a superficial hope that Jesus loves us, and with a bare trust that we love him. The old saints did not generally speak with "buts," and "ifs," and "hopes," and "trusts," but they spoke positively and plainly. "I know whom I have believed," saith Paul. "I know that my Redeemer liveth," saith Job. Get positive knowledge of your love of Jesus, and be not satisfied till you can speak of your interest in him as a reality, which you have made sure by having received the witness of the Holy Spirit, and his seal upon your soul by faith.
True love to Christ is in every case the Holy Spirit's work, and must be wrought in the heart by him. He is the efficient cause of it; but the logical reason why we love Jesus lies in himself. Why do we love Jesus? Because he first loved us. Why do we love Jesus? Because he "gave himself for us." We have life through his death; we have peace through his blood. Though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor. Why do we love Jesus? Because of the excellency of his person. We are filled with a sense of his beauty! an admiration of his charms! a consciousness of his infinite perfection! His greatness, goodness, and loveliness, in one resplendent ray, combine to enchant the soul till it is so ravished that it exclaims, "Yea, he is altogether lovely. " Blessed love this-a love which binds the heart with chains more soft than silk, and yet more firm than adamant!

EVENING
"The Lord trieth the righteous." - Psalm 11:5
All events are under the control of Providence; consequently all the trials of our outward life are traceable at once to the great First Cause. Out of the golden gate of God's ordinance the armies of trial march forth in array, clad in their iron armour, and armed with weapons of war. All providences are doors to trial. Even our mercies, like roses, have their thorns. Men may be drowned in seas of prosperity as well as in rivers of affliction. Our mountains are not too high, and our valleys are not too low for temptations: trials lurk on all roads. Everywhere, above and beneath, we are beset and surrounded with dangers. Yet no shower falls unpermitted from the threatening cloud; every drop has its order ere it hastens to the earth. The trials which come from God are sent to prove and strengthen our graces, and so at once to illustrate the power of divine grace, to test the genuineness of our virtues, and to add to their energy. Our Lord in his infinite wisdom and superabundant love, sets so high a value upon his people's faith that he will not screen them from those trials by which faith is strengthened. You would never have possessed the precious faith which now supports you if the trial of your faith had not been like unto fire. You are a tree that never would have rooted so well if the wind had not rocked you to and fro, and made you take firm hold upon the precious truths of the covenant grace. Worldly ease is a great foe to faith; it loosens the joints of holy valour, and snaps the sinews of sacred courage. The balloon never rises until the cords are cut; affliction doth this sharp service for believing souls. While the wheat sleeps comfortably in the husk it is useless to man, it must be threshed out of its resting place before its value can be known. Thus it is well that Jehovah trieth the righteous, for it causeth them to grow rich towards God.

by Julia Prins Vanderveen | Reading these lines takes us back to the story of Adam and Eve, when they sinned against God and were no longer able to enjoy God’s presence in the garden of paradise. Now we are nearly at the end of this magnificent story of God’s love...

Book Review: The Descendants by Kaui Hart Hemmings
Tumblr media
Death, infidelity, inheritance, love, and family—those are the major themes of The Descendants. And they percolate in ways I wouldn’t have predicted. They seep into crevices to either detonate with obviousness or tickle with featherlight subtlety. It’s impossible to miss them, yet, at the same time, close attention is required in order to compile their layers, combining them until they form a more cracked-and-nuanced picture of life. Of the world. Of the people we come to know and trust, or more importantly, to love. Matt King is in over his head. His wife is in a coma and was having an affair. His girls are screwed up, acting out. He needs to make a decision about the sale of Hawaiian land his family has owned for centuries, and he has no idea how to be a father. He needs help. He needs answers. Somehow, he has to find a way to move forward. To take charge in a way he’s never had to do before, which means not only parenting his children, but getting to know them as people once he realizes he has no idea who they are. It’s a painful journey for him, for his girls (plus Sid), as they say goodbye to the life they thought they had, but it’s also one of healing and forgiveness and growth. It shows how good can still come from something unspeakable, something tragic. It was actually quite rude how moving this book was given its minimalist style. Words were not minced. Hemming’s dialogue was simple, to the point. Her descriptions were potent without becoming overpowering. Her commentary about parenthood, about feeling lost and hurt and confused when life throws curveballs so hard, so looming, they knock you onto your backside, splintering the air from your lungs and popping black dots in front of your eyelids, was as insightful as it was imbued with grim realism. The prose was the opposite of flowery but it still packed an evocative punch. The narrative struck a delicate balance. There were moments that had me clapping a hand over my mouth, repressing a laugh of amusement or horror, and others that punctured loss and heartbreak straight through my clavicle. I wanted to smack the King clan almost as much as I wanted to hug them at times. Beautiful, touching, and sorrowful all around. 3.5/5 stars

Living His Word
Tumblr media
You accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, so continue to live following him. You must depend on Christ only, drawing life and strength from him. Just as you were taught the truth, continue to grow stronger in your understanding of it. And never stop giving thanks to God. - Colossians 2:6-7
There is the initiation of our relationship to Jesus Christ and there is the continuation of our relationship to him.
The relationship was initiated when "God made us free from the power of darkness. And he brought us into the kingdom of his dear Son" (Colossians 1:13). We acknowledged that we are sinners, we repented of our sins, and we accepted Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior. As a result, we passed from citizenship in the kingdom of darkness into citizenship in the Kingdom of God. As the Apostle Paul put it in II Corinthians 5:17: "When anyone is in Christ, it is a whole new world. The old things are gone; suddenly, everything is new!"
Our relationship to Jesus, however, continues beyond its initiation. We aren't supposed to stay the same way we were when we first believed. Rather, we are called to "grow to be like Christ in every way" (Ephesians 4:15). Indeed, God takes the lead in making sure that we will grow to be like Christ. Paul tells us that "those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers" (Romans 8:29). God took the lead in freeing us from the power of darkness and He also takes the lead in conforming us to the image of His Son.
We can cooperate with the work of God in our lives by continuing to follow Jesus, depending on Him only, and drawing our strength from Him. Since we no longer live, but Christ lives in us (Galatians 2:20), we should forsake life in the power of our own strength and embrace the life of Christ dwelling within us. We should continue to learn as much as we can about this new life we have in Christ.
And we should never stop giving thanks to God. Given the initiation and continuation of our relationship to Christ Jesus, we have a lot to be thankful for.

I am doing so much this month I’m losing track so like. April’s goals met post will be a mess.
Did 4.5 chapters listening reading method of MoDu, 1 full audio file.
Listened to DeFrancis Chinese Reader audio 1
Listened to Français Par Le Méthode Nature 4 chapters (doing that today so likely to increase, it’s freaking great listening practice for me and Also completely comprehensible and Also a great refresher... genuinely if you never saw the book, and are learning French, Italian, Latin, I love them so much you might wanna check em out if you learn best like me which is just In the language with context teaching new things in small comprehensible ways over time, and massive amounts of content. The nature method books teach this way, and how it’s pretty much my favorite way to learn - Learn Korean in Korean YouTube also teaches like this, Alice Ayel, French Comprehensible input YouTube etc. I love that this book has audio now I am truly so happy about it ToT that’s what I am always missing in French most - decent listening skills.
Watched ep 1 Merlin in French since apparently Merlin has a dub I found?
FINISHED LLJ 4 part 1!!!! Huge deal to me!!! I am officially farther in Japanese then I was years ago last time I studied. I’m also 400 words through LLJ 5. (My goal now is try to complete LLJ 5, and LLJ 4 Part 2 courses. Also for now I am just doing the grammar LLJ 4 part 2 without actually reading tae kims grammar guide - both because I could not get Myself to read it, and I think puzzling out what the grammar means when I see it in the memrise deck helps me actually understand it).
Read (and transcribed into actual Japanese) 1/4 of Japanese in 30 Lessons. (It’s been fun practicing writing, refreshed kana for me, helped me remember kanji for some words, and been good grammar reference tbh... not only is it a refresher but I actually find it makes more sense to me with its explanations than tae kim grammar guide does sometimes).
Listened to ep 1 season 1 of 天涯客 audio drama! Which is pretty fine to follow if you know the plot! I listened to it maybe 5 months ago and understood a lot more this time! Also this time I realized the audiodrama HAS SUBTITLES in chinese. So like i could maybe watch once with them and once without? I wasn’t listening while looking, so I didn’t realize they were there. But once I noticed them, they’d be super helpful for me learning some word pronunciations better for words I know when reading but not very well when listening.
