Tbh reading is my main hobby (which people would know from my book blog) but I've been trying to get myself to do more varied things and schedule my time better haha!

So things I'm trying to get back into are: swimming, piano, sewing cards (literally embroidery with paper), languages, quilling, puzzles, colouring, knitting.

I still bake a bit but trying to do more of it, and wanting to do learn proper embroidery and crochet at some point. And like just doing free online courses for fun and to use my brain more (because my job doesn't stimulate my brain much anymore I've been doing it for so long).

I almost bought I Kissed Shara Wheeler this week, but your opinion made me doubt. Why didn’t you like it?

Hi!

So, compared to RW&RB and OLS (that I love), the romance in IKSW was not well developed, not even believable, for me. Shara is not present for half of the novel, so it is hard to see the relationship development. When she appears, she and Chloe go hard into this enemies-to-lovers mode. So they have some pages of bickering and banter, and they're suddenly making out? I didn't understand why or what they liked about each other, and I don't think it was enough time to create a real bond.

Also, I'm all for flawed characters, but there's nothing to like about Shara. The more Chloe discovered things about her, the less I wanted them to be together. As a love interest, she was a big no-no for me.

I've seen some people referring to this book as "soft mystery", but it's so soft that it's boring. The first part of the novel made me want to skip some sections, but I was listening to the audiobook 😬

And I read a lot of Queer contemporary YA romance, and it gets repetitive if you read a lot of the same specific genre. I gave myself a YA break after this book (or maybe the next one I read?).

I think the only thing about the story I liked was the side characters. They have better arcs and are more interesting. I liked how Chloe went on this investigation and made many Queer friends along the way. I'd love to read their stories instead!

In the end, I think it was a combination of things that didn't work for me. But I've seen some positive reviews, so maybe if you enjoy soft mysteries, enemy-to-lovers, and it's in the mood for YA shenanigans, it may work for you!

Aside from being an unapologetic bookworm, I'm also a prolific baker (I'm always making treats and desserts for friends and loved ones) and I enjoy landscaping/gardening. These hobbies require patience, creativity/artistry, and getting your hands dirty in their own way so it makes sense to me why I enjoy them.

Alright, friends, it's almost October and although I probably shouldn't buy any more books (said with an uncomfortable glance at shelves upon shelves of unread ones) I am so in the mood for something spooky!! Past faves have been:

Night Film by Marisha Pessl (adore! Might need a reread)

Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall (sooo much scarier than expected, I mean wow! This was YA? How??)

Harrow Lake by Kat Ellis (really fun and just the right amount of scary)

I am looking for something scary, yet not terribly disturbing, I'd say. The other day I rewatched Shutter Island (which I loved as a teenager) and am embarrassed to say that that felt like too much somehow? But then again, films might be different from books, Idk.
