Thing I learned from this fandom:
David Tennant has an appendectomy scar.
Thing I learned from watching Masters of Sex again:
So does Michael Sheen.
They are both adorable.

I'm trying to write a fic where it's set in the middle of the forest on there own, no phone singal, no medicine or drugs to numb the pain or knock out the person and no way to call for help and there is the mc, one doctor, one surgeon, one ex-army medic, one nurse and one psychologist. Just so happens the mc gets appendicitis. Yay.... and now they have to do some field surgery. How would they go about this? How long would it take for symptoms to start progessing (note charcter keeps insiting that they are fine) and then to be noticed by the group. Then what happens? How to they do it? How does the person getting it done to them react? Im assuming they are going to need to restrain them somehow and comofrt them. How do I make it that none of them die? Also could you please do a post on how people react to pain? I think that could help a lot of us whump writers! I know some people scream and cry but when it gets real bad they fall silent... is that true?
Improvised Appendicitis Surgery (shockingly you're not the first person to ask this exact specific question)
Pain Pt 1
Pain Pt 2
Enjoy!

14 October 2014: Ashton and his appendix separate, due to irreconcilable differences.
(Have we ever seen his scar? My appendix scar is quite obvious. Need a good pic of shirtless Ash's righthand side. For science.)

Do you know what the symptoms of a ruptured appendix are compared to an infected appendix that hasn’t ruptured yet? Also what would the recovery look like for both? Tysm
When the appendix is infected, they may experience:
Fever, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite
Constipation, diarrhea, inability to pass gas
Bloated or swollen abdomen
Pain that may start in the upper or middle abdomen but settles in the lower abdomen on the right side, which increases when pressed on, walking, standing, jumping, coughing, or sneezing
If the appendix is removed without complications, most people leave the hospital in one to three days after surgery. They’ll probably be able to go back to normal activities within two to four weeks after leaving the hospital. Caution will be needed when lifting anything strenuous and climbing stairs.
If it bursts, they may experience a temporary period of feeling better because the high pressure in the appendix has been released, but it can lead to peritonitis, which is inflammation of the tissue covering the inner abdominal wall and organs. The symptoms are similar but more severe:
Faster breathing and heart rate
A higher spike in their fever, possibly including chills, confusion and weakness
An increase in the severity and constancy of the pain, which may spread to the entire abdomen
Buildup of pus (abscess), which may need draining and antibiotics
Sepsis if the bacteria spreads to the bloodstream
The peritonitis will be treated by cleaning the abdominal cavity during the surgery. They’ll receive IV antibiotics for the first few days and then take more orally for the next several weeks to be sure the infection’s gone. If they have an abscess, a tube will be inserted to drain it. It can take weeks, so they may be sent home with the drain in place as well as antibiotics. Recovery in that case may be four to six weeks or more.

A bit of self projection. I had appendicitis in November and almost went septic as my appendix ruptured and had to wait from 6 a.m. until 5 p.m for surgery. Went to work feeling strange, like my stomach was in a knot but I just thought I was coming down with some kind of virus. Stayed from 8:30 a.m until 4 p.m and then went home early.
Spent the rest of the evening feeling like shit, feverish, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, feeling hot and cold at the same time. Barely slept that night and then 3 a.m was most likely when my appendix decided it wanted to move out, the pain reached 10/10 and my belly was so swollen I looked second trimester pregnant but didn't actually go the hospital until after 5 a.m.
Luckily I live with my parents so they drove me and got confirmation that it was appendicitis but the doctors didn't have confirmation on whether my appendix burst until surgery. Thanks to laparoscopic surgery, I only have three small scars. Had a draining tube for the five days I was in the hospital and then on antibiotics for a week, my appetite didn't fully return until two weeks post op, not being able do my usual six day a week workout routine sucked and was off work for six weeks. That pain is something you never forget and I will also never forget the feeling of the draining tube being pulled out of my body.
Imagine a scenario in which Rain and Sky get appendicitis at different times and how Phayu and Prapai would dote on them even more than they already do after getting discharged from the hospital.

Just wanting to rant a little. I had to have an emergency appendectomy on Christmas Eve. I missed all the holiday fun because my stupid appendix. Now I’m stuck recovering at a family members house while I heal. Healing is happening slowly. Family goes check on my cat but I miss her. The only silver linings of this is an interesting story and a great joke. I named my appendix Jim Carrey because it was the grinch.

This is a clip for you to rate (: it's from the TV show lost were they are on a island and one of them has appendicitis. This is taken from YouTube sorry about the low quality.
youtube
I'm gonna give this a C+.
Reasoning:
Improvised appendectomies are very well documented and very possible, even with very limited supplies.
Appendectomies with lidocaine as the only anesthesia have been performed well, and that is an option to this day in many parts of the world (unlike in this clip, you can repeatedly anesthetize for each layer you cut, so while it might be somewhat uncomfortable in other ways, it would be possible to make a relatively pain-free surgery this way).
I have not seen this episode so I'm not sure how they prep this surgery, but it looks like no effort has been made to make this a sterile (or even particularly clean) procedure.
Chloroform isn't a great option (I mean, if it's what you've got use it, but it causes liver damage and cardiac problems) and it's more difficult to administer than just putting a rag over someone's face. Since the writers had a choice (even if the characters didn't) ether would have been better and more possible to administer in a low resource setting. Neither is a good option for the purpose of knocking someone out fast though. Both take between 5-20 minutes to work.
The surgeon says this guy "should be fine". No medical professional would say this, especially since appendectomies are fairly dirty procedures anyway (even if you don't completely neglect sterile procedure), and this surgery without any antibiotics to prevent infection mean it's a super high chance of this guy dying of infection later.

Hi guys, sorry for being even more inactive - I had emergency appendix surgery late Saturday afternoon and just got home last night.
I’m in a lot of pain but I’ll be okay! Just very tired and healing. I hope everyone’s doing ok ♥

I am struggling so much.
My appendectomy was 3 days ago. I do feel a bit better, but I'm still sore, tired and feeling crappy.
My anxiety is through the roof:
Is this normal pain or something else?
Was it just appendicitis or do I have Crohn's disease?
Am I supposed to be feeling better than I am?
Is x normal?
Plus there's stress with work and getting time off (I only have 5 vacation days left, we don't have sick days). My doctor's note said to stay off for 2 weeks basically but I have to go back before then or apply for short term disability.
All of this stress has brought up the loss of Ringo again. I miss him. I don't even have seeing him to look forward to. I can't ride for a month anyways.
My partner got mad at me. I feel like a burden.
