Portuguese Influence in a Movie Musical

Springtime in the Rockies is a 1942 film that has Carmen Miranda as the big personality and star including singer, dancer and actress from Brazil. I recognize Carmen from her performances on radio from this era as well as the famous banana symbol, with the fruit on her head. I was doing research one day on the origins of that lady, and Carmen Miranda was the inspiration for the design. This film includes her in its plot surrounding two famous Hollywood stage actors who are having a huge lovers quarrel, both of them not trusting one another with their separate boyfriends and girlfriends. Betty Grable is one of the leads opposite John Payne who was in the famous Christmas film Miracle on 34th street that I recognize him from. These two start off fight-singing in the first act and have a musical number that obviously and overtly shows their quarreling has found its way into their work, since they are acting together and partners in real life. Betty’s character decides to flee and John decides to follow her, during a series of events in which he drunkenly hires a personal driver, secretary (Carmen Miranda) and her 6 other brothers who came along for the ride. “You said it was fate,” said the hired hands when John’s character was unable to produce durable evidence for him to remember why he had brought them all along in the first place. Naturally, this film surrounds performers, much like that of Song of Freedom except with the changes of the film being much more flashy with musical numbers as well as song, than just a standalone solo like Paul’s as his character in the early 30’s film. Something these two films have in common is their ability to highlight two different cultures that make their way to America in their distinct way. Slavery, for one, in Song of Freedom is mentioned earlier in the film and the African American experience is highlighted several times throughout the film. On the other hand, Carmen Miranda was not born in America, rather came from Brazil and came to the states. Her culture is represented mostly in her style and her accent, and she does speak Portuguese a lot. A common misconception that my Portuguese friend once told me is that they do not speak Spanish, and are not spanish. Brazilians are Portuguese and speak Portuguese. I personally love Carmen Miranda’s style of music and dancing and I think for the time, this would’ve been considered a progressive film in featuring someone of a different culture in performing. Her character was portrayed as witty, intelligent and talented. I Love Lucy, a 50’s TV show featured a married couple that was interracial Lucy being the white American and Desi, her husband being of Cuban descent. Cultural representation in both of these films seems to be distinct in the movie-musical. The film Springtime in the Rockies also tends to have a colorful and lust-filled scenery that makes the film feel other-worldly and whimsical. In Rutgers University’s scholarly article, this can be said about the genre of the time: “Thus, in the early 1930s, as the “dream factories” continued to create a torrent of films for mass consumption, several distinct genres of commercial filmmaking emerged, which matched the public’s new world outlook” (Dixon 51). This is a genre that must have drawn americans to the movie theaters to watch films that were purposefully theatrical in their scenery, story and casting. The film ends with the main characters getting back together and forgiving each other, but in my opinion Carmen Miranda steals the show by making every bit of her appearances vivacious and full of life. The finale of the film is also another musical number in which all of the main characters dance and sing and send off the audience with a large crescendo.

Down Argentine Way (1940)
In 1940, the United States had not yet entered the Second World War. Despite having zero troops fighting in the European, North African, and Asia-Pacific theaters, the American government was nevertheless preparing for the contingency of war. Since the 1930s, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s State Department pushed forth its “Good Neighbor Policy” to Hollywood executives, intended to foster U.S.-Latin American relations through various means. With the Axis on the march and making overtures to still-neutral nations, the State Department asked for Hollywood’s assistance, to make films showing Latin American in a positive light while not exactly leaning too heavily on propaganda. Hollywood obliged. One of the first movies crafted in this State Department-mandated spirit was Irving Cummings’ Down Argentine Way, released by 20th Century Fox. In addition to fulfilling these governmental requests, the film also served as the breakout movie for Fox contractee Betty Grable, as well as introducing Americans to Carmen Miranda.
Despite Argentina being reference in the title, it seems Down Argentine Way is confused about what Latin American nation(s) it is representing. At a New York show jumping event, Glenda Crawford (Grable) meets Argentinian horse breeder, Ricardo Quintana (Don Ameche). Despite Glenda ostensibly approaching Ricardo to purchase his prize show jumping horse, Carmelita, the two strike up an immediate romantic interest and decide to have dinner after conversing for about two minutes. At dinner, Ricardo learns that Glenda is the niece of his father’s (Henry Stephenson) longtime rival – the story behind their elder Crawford-Quintana animosity is pure contrivance – and, by his father, Don Diego Quintana’s, instructions, Ricardo refuses to sell the horse and departs immediately for home. Justifiably perplexed by Ricardo’s sudden temperamental change, Glenda decides to do what anyone would: convincing her aunt Binnie (Charlotte Greenwood) to accompany her down to Argentina to demand a straight answer from Ricardo. When Ricardo meets Glenda again over another dinner (complete with Carmen Miranda song-and-dance numbers), he explains the situation and the two reclaim and rekindle their quickfire love – to Don Diego’s horror.
Among the actors playing bit roles are J. Carrol Naish (who so often played characters of varying races and ethnicities he was nicknamed, “Hollywood’s one-man U.N.”) as ranch hand Casiano, Kay Aldridge, Leonid Kinskey, and Chris-Pin Martin (a Mexican-American actor and the only credited actor of Latin American descent in this movie other than Miranda) as Esteban. The Nicholas Brothers have a cameo that contains one of the great on-screen performances, but more on that later.
20th Century Fox musicals crafted within the Golden Age of Hollywood’s Studio System are anything but cerebral. If one is watching these films for intricate plots, dramatic statements, and philosophical themes, you may want to retool your approach to these works. Fox’s musicals are splashy, dripping with Technicolor, and never pretend to be something more than what they actually are. This remarkable energy begins with one of the top-billed actors/ Fox’s Darryl F. Zanuck intended Down Argentine Way as a vehicle for Fox’s two primary musical stars at that time – Don Ameche and Alice Faye. Betty Grable was Faye’s substitution when the latter fell ill. Despite both women being roughly the same age and having camera-friendly blonde locks, Grable’s higher, less husky voice lends the film a more youthful dynamism that Faye – a contralto who was a striking presence in her own distinctive way – cannot. Her chemistry with Ameche feels more akin to screwball comedy, the likes of which would inspire (and eventually eclipsed by) Marilyn Monroe. The Goldwyn Girl alumnus might not have been making her film debut, but this was certainly her coming-out extravaganza (she became a pin-up favorite for American soldiers in WWII), despite a chaotic screenplay and questionable acting from her own performance and of those surrounding her.
Fox’s executives must have realized that Carmen Miranda is a strange fit for a film set in Argentina and partly about a horse ranching family. Miranda’s jewelry-bedecked outfit and exposed midriff (the outfit, a baiana, is an embellishment on the clothes of African-Brazilians living in Bahia) makes her a flashy, exotified novelty in a movie attempting a half-baked narrative between Grable and Ameche. Down Argentine Way presents Miranda and her musical numbers (influenced by Brazilian and Cuban music) as a representation of South America, at large – someone did not complete any detailed research on the vast cultural differences between Argentina and Brazil. Unfortunately, this was the beginning of Miranda’s typecasting at Fox. Though she would garner supporting roles that gave her dialogue and subplots, Fox would make her costumes even more ostentatious than before, serving to further frame her as foreign, lusty, tropically exotic.
Other insensitivities of Latin Americans are sprinkled across the film’s runtime: laziness (how many siestas can Chris-Pin Martin take?), tomfoolery, freeloading, deceitful, longstanding Mexican stereotypes (see: the fiesta scene) carrying over to this film’s setting, and speaking the typical broken or heavy-accented English that Hollywood still associates with those having Latin American roots. American audiences might have enjoyed these Good Neighbor Policy-inspired movies, but Latin American governments took exception. The difference between American and Argentinian reactions could not be more stark. American moviegoers made Down Argentine Way Fox’s highest-grossing musical of 1940. Meanwhile, Argentina’s government, following an official screening of the film, refused to allow Down Argentine Way’s distribution to move forward in the titular nation. Viewers across Latin America would find the depiction of Argentina in Down Argentine Way as an incomprehensible mélange of Latin American influences,  without any care or understanding of the cultural nuances within and between Latin American nations (and primarily Argentina).
Even as Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz headlined an incredible 1939 for Hollywood, color films remained expensive endeavors for the major studios. From the cinematography by Ray Rennahan (1941’s Blood and Sand, 1953’s Arrowhead) and Leon Shamroy (1953’s The Robe, 1963’s Cleopatra); the art direction by Richard Day (1931’s Arrowsmith, 1951’s A Streetcar Named Desire) and Joseph C. Wright (1928’s The Man Who Laughs, 1953’s Gentlemen Prefer Blondes); and the costumes by Travis Banton (1932’s Shanghai Express, 1945’s Scarlet Street) make full use of Down Argentine Way’s Technicolor – which seems to leap from the viewer’s screen. A legitimate copy or print of Down Argentine Way is the best way to experience this and, even then, the current available official prints of this film could use a restoration to further accentuate the glitzy colors that these craftsmen intended.

The Nicholas Brothers, Fayard and Harold, reprise the song in the film’s second half. In the late 1920s and early ‘30s (the height of swing jazz in America), the Nicholas were a headliner act at the Cotton Club in Harlem. There, they innovated their dancing style – a hybrid of ballet and tap that some call “acrobatic dancing” – and brought that to the masses through cinema. Despite their limited number of appearances in the movies due to the institutional racism of Hollywood casting, the Nicholas Brothers, years after the pinnacle of their talents, continue to grow their reputation as among the greatest dancers ever to grace American cinema. Their athletic routine for “Down Argentine Way” encapsulates the dancing expertise they brought to the screen – quick reactions, nifty footwork, and those splits. How can one not be in awe of their mastery?  
Carmen Miranda’s three songs – one at the film’s opening, the other two when Grable and Ameche’s character reunite in Argentina over dinner – are mostly in Portuguese. Only the opening song, “South American Way” has any English, but this is brief. Treat “South American Way” as a brief, one-minute appetizer that follows the opening credits. The two dinner-and-a-show samba songs once Grable touches down in Argentina are “Bambú, Bambú” (traditional music with lyrics by Almirante and Valdo de Abreu) “Mamãe Yo Quero” (music by Jararaca and Vicente Paiva, lyrics by Al Stillman). These numbers are nothing more than exotified showcases for Miranda’s theatrical instincts and singing ability – but what instincts, what ability she demonstrates.
Inconsequential though it seems to modern eyes, Down Argentine Way heralded the changing currents flowing through Hollywood’s relationship with Latin America as well as within 20th Century Fox itself. Down Argentine Way, however entertaining, is a clumsy attempt at placating the United States’ hemispheric neighbors in service of diplomatic goals. Though received poorly in South America, the adulation for this film in the United States prompted a half-decade wave of Good Neighbor Policy movies – most notably Disney’s Saludos Amigos (1942) and The Three Caballeros (1944). American filmmakers would mostly retreat to well-worn stereotypes over the next several years, solidifying cultural misconceptions of Latin America that have endured into this century. In Hollywood, the studios perfected their movie musical formulas over more than a decade following the silent era. With Down Argentine Way’s release, Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda became icons in America. But only Grable avoided being typecast; Miranda would be subject to the racial prejudice baked into Studio System at the time, never to fully escape it.

“Be Your Husband’s Best Friend” (aka “Be a Pal to Your Husband”) is episode #21 of the radio series MY FAVORITE HUSBAND broadcast on December 4, 1948.
Synopsis ~ Liz buys a book that says that the way to get along with your husband is to share all of his interests. With that in mind, she joins him in a poker game and tags along on a camping trip. 
Note: This episode was aired before the characters names were changed from Cugat to Cooper. It was also before Jell-O came aboard to sponsor the show and before the regular cast featured Bea Benadaret and Gale Gordon as the Atterburys.

The script was also re-written as a 1950 episode of “My Favorite Husband” also titled “Be a Pal” and broadcast June 18, 1950. This was to account for the change in the characters surnames from Cugat to Cooper.

This program was also the basis for the “I Love Lucy” episode "Be a Pal" (ILL S1;E2) filmed on September 21, 1951 and first aired on October 22, 1951.  The main difference is the radio versions do not include the famous Carmen Miranda lipsynch scene.

“My Favorite Husband” was based on the novels Mr. and Mrs. Cugat, the Record of a Happy Marriage (1940) and Outside Eden (1945) by Isabel Scott Rorick, which had previously been adapted into the film Are Husbands Necessary? (1942). “My Favorite Husband” was first broadcast as a one-time special on July 5, 1948. Lucille Ball and Lee Bowman played the characters of Liz and George Cugat, and a positive response to this broadcast convinced CBS to launch “My Favorite Husband” as a series. Bowman was not available Richard Denning was cast as George. On January 7, 1949, confusion with bandleader Xavier Cugat prompted a name change to Cooper. On this same episode Jell-O became its sponsor. A total of 124 episodes of the program aired from July 23, 1948 through March 31, 1951. After about ten episodes had been written, writers Fox and Davenport departed and three new writers took over – Bob Carroll, Jr., Madelyn Pugh, and head writer/producer Jess Oppenheimer. In March 1949 Gale Gordon took over the existing role of George’s boss, Rudolph Atterbury, and Bea Benaderet was added as his wife, Iris. CBS brought “My Favorite Husband” to television in 1953, starring Joan Caulfield and Barry Nelson as Liz and George Cooper. The television version ran two-and-a-half seasons, from September 1953 through December 1955, running concurrently with “I Love Lucy.” It was produced live at CBS Television City for most of its run, until switching to film for a truncated third season filmed (ironically) at Desilu and recasting Liz Cooper with Vanessa Brown.

Lucille Ball (Liz Cugat) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. “My Favorite Husband” eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.
Richard Denning (George Cugat) was born Louis Albert Heindrich Denninger Jr., in Poughkeepsie, New York. When he was 18 months old, his family moved to Los Angeles. Plans called for him to take over his father’s garment manufacturing business, but he developed an interest in acting. Denning enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. He is best known for his  roles in various science fiction and horror films of the 1950s. Although he teamed with Lucille Ball on radio in “My Favorite Husband,” the two never acted together on screen. While “I Love Lucy” was on the air, he was seen on another CBS TV series, “Mr. & Mrs. North.” From 1968 to 1980 he played the Governor on “Hawaii 5-0″, his final role. He died in 1998 at age 84.
Ruth Perrott (Katie, the Maid) was also later seen on “I Love Lucy.” She first played Mrs. Pomerantz, a member of the surprise investigating committee for the Society Matrons League in “Pioneer Women” (ILL S1;E25), as one of the member of the Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League in “Lucy and Ethel Buy the Same Dress” (ILL S3;E3), and also played a nurse when “Lucy Goes to the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16). She died in 1996 at the age of 96.
In this episode we learn the names of all seven of Katie’s ex-husbands: Clarence, Peter, Harold, Oscar, Engelbert, and Yancy.
Bob LeMond (Announcer) also served as the announcer for the pilot episode of “I Love Lucy”. When the long-lost pilot was finally discovered in 1990, a few moments of the opening narration were damaged and lost, so LeMond – fifty years later – recreated the narration for the CBS special and subsequent DVD release.
GUEST CAST

Hans Conried (Professor Philpot Millmoss) first co-starred with Lucille Ball in The Big Street (1942). He then appeared on “I Love Lucy” as used furniture man Dan Jenkins in “Redecorating” (ILL S2;E8) and later that same season as Percy Livermore in “Lucy Hires an English Tutor” (ILL S2;E13) – both in 1952. The following year he began an association with Disney by voicing Captain Hook in Peter Pan. On “The Lucy Show” he played Professor Gitterman in “Lucy’s Barbershop Quartet” (TLS S1;E19) and in “Lucy Plays Cleopatra” (TLS S2;E1). He was probably best known as Uncle Tonoose on “Make Room for Daddy” starring Danny Thomas, which was filmed on the Desilu lot. He joined Thomas on a season 6 episode of “Here’s Lucy” in 1973. He died in 1982 at age 64.
Conried will recreate this role in 1950, when the script is rewritten for the Coopers as “Be A Pal.”  The only difference is that his first name is Philip, not Philpot.  On television, the author remains off screen throughout.

Joseph Kearns (Joe, Poker Player) appeared on “I Love Lucy” as the psychiatrist in “The Kleptomaniac” (ILL S1;E27) and later played the theatre manager in “Lucy’s Night in Town” (ILL S6;E22). His most famous role was as Mr. Wilson on TV’s “Dennis the Menace” (1959). When he passed away during the show’s final season, Lucy regular Gale Gordon took over for him, playing his brother.
In future iterations of this script, this character’s dialogue is assumed by Mr. Atterbury (Gale Gordon) and on TV by Fred Mertz (William Frawley).

John Hiestand (Cory Cartwright) served as the announcer for the radio show “Let George Do It” from 1946 to 1950. In 1955 he did an episode of “Our Miss Brooks” opposite Gale Gordon. Cory was a regular character who was eventually written out of the series when the Atterbury’s (Gale Gordon and Bea Bendaret) were introduced.

Jean Vander Pyl (Marge) is best known as the voice of Wilma Flintstone for the Hanna-Barbera cartoon “The Flintstones.” Coincidentally, Wilma’s best friend was voiced by Bea Benadaret, who will later play Iris Atterbury, Liz’s best friend on “My Favorite Husband.” On radio she was heard on such programs as “The Halls of Ivy” (1950–52) and on “Father Knows Best” before it moved to TV.  She died in 1999 at age 79.
THE EPISODE
ANNOUNCER: “Let’s look in on the Cugats and see what they’re doing. Oh, but hold your hats. Liz and George are having an argument about their plans for their evening. Liz wants to go to a symphony concert and George wants to have a poker game! (As a fight announcer) And in this corner  wearing a pink satin housecoat and weighing 120 pounds, ‘Battling Liz Cugat.’ And in this corner wearing a grey pinstripe suit and weighing 170 pounds is her husband ‘Gorgeous George’. Well, the first round ended in a draw and here comes the second round!”

‘Gorgeous George’ was the stage name of professional wrestler George Raymond Wagner (1915–63), so named because of his long, blonde hair. He was mentioned on “I Love Lucy” in “Pioneer Women” (ILL S1;E25) and “Ricky’s Movie Offer” (ILL S4;E6).
Liz and George lament that they argue so much since getting married. George wonders why men have to wear formal clothes to a concert.
LIZ: “Because when they fall asleep the stiff shirt keeps them from falling over.”

In “Lucy the Music Lover” (TLS S1;E8) it was Lucy Carmichael, not her tuxedo-clad date, that fell asleep during a classical music concert. At least she didn’t drop her opera glasses! 
Liz turns on the waterworks, but George still refuses to go to the concert. 
GEORGE: “And I hope Leopold falls flat on his Stokowski!”

Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) was one of the leading conductors of the early and mid-20th century, he is best known for his long association with the Philadelphia Orchestra and his appearance in Disney’s Fantasia (1940) with that orchestra. 
Liz tells Katie the Maid she will be going to a woman’s club luncheon to hear a talk about marriage. Katie tells her that she has been married six times: Peter, Harold, Oscar, Engelbert, and Yancy, which she remembers because it spells out ‘P.H.O.E.Y’. She’s intentionally left off her first husband Clarence because it wouldn’t spell ‘phoey’!

At their club luncheon, Liz and Marge (Jean Vander Pyl) listen to a guest speaker talk about “How To Be Happy, Though Married”. Professor Philpot Millmoss (Hans Conried) suggests the ladies be a pal to their husbands. Liz wonders why it has to be the woman who gives in - but Millmoss tells her to consult his new book on sale at the door for seventy nine cents.  
Note: In the 1950 revision, Marge was replaced with Iris (Bea Benadaret), but the author was still played by Hans Conried. In the television version, the author remains off screen and Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance) takes the Marge / Iris lines. 
Liz resolves to employ the “Be A Pal Treatment” with George and sits beside him to read the evening newspaper. Liz pretends to be interested in the sports section.

LIZ (reading): “Williams Bags Crown By TKO in eighth.″
Liz pronounces TKO phonetically as ‘Tuh-Ko” although George corrects her. The exchange was repeated verbatim between Lucy and Ricky in “The Camping Trip.”
LIZ (reading): “Midget Racing! They oughta be ashamed making those little men run around the track.”
George sarcastically calls Liz Ted Husing, and then Red Barbar.

Ted Husing (1901-62) was one of CBS Radio’s most popular sportscasters. By 1950 his salary was an astronomical million dollars!  Red Barber (1908-92) was a play-by-play announcer for major league baseball, then announcing for the Brooklyn Dodgers and holding down his own CBS TV sports show “Red Barber’s Club House.”
LIZ (reading): “They’re racing little girls! It says so right here,‘Yesterday at Tanforan a race was won by a three year-old maiden!’  She certainly was carrying a lot of money for a little girl. She had $2,000 in her purse.”

The line is virtually identical on television, except that Tanforan (a horse racetrack outside San Francisco) was changed to the more familiar Churchill Downs.

George / Ricky then refers to Liz / Lucy as Grantland Rice (1880–1954), a sportswriter known for his elegant prose, although the reference was removed for TV syndication when Rice died in 1954. It was restored for the DVD release. Clueless Liz / Lucy think he is a food!
Liz is determined to join in the poker game that evening, despite not knowing anything about the card game. Lucy also tried this tactic in the television version of “Be A Pal”.  The other poker players are Joe (Joseph Kearns) and Cory Cartwright (John Hiestand), George’s bachelor friend.

In the 1950 radio re-write, Joe was voiced by Hans Conried (doubling with Millmoss) and Gale Gordon as Mr. Atterbury, a role previously played in earlier episodes by Hans Conried. On television, the poker players were Fred Mertz (William Frawley), Hank (Richard Reeves, left) and Charlie (Tony Michaels, right).

The Andrews Sisters were a close-harmony singing group most popular during World War II. In 1969 Lucy played LaVerne Andrews on an episode of “Here’s Lucy” that guest-starred Patty Andrews as herself. Lucie Arnaz took the role of the third Andrews sister, Maxene.
A few days later, George confides in Cory that Liz has been driving him crazy by sticking to his side like glue, trying to be interested in everything that he is. George decides to go away on a camping trip to get away from her for a while. Cory suggests that George take Liz with him and make the trip so rigorous that she will regret trying to ‘be a pal’.

At the end of Act One, there is a public service announcement about NATO - the newly-formed North Atlantic Treaty Organization. 
Katie warns Liz about her husband’s plan, having overheard George and Cory talking.  Liz spills the beans to Cory and blackmails him to turn the tables on George at the campsite.  
Liz and George engage in a fishing contest, just like Lucy and Ricky in “The Camping Trip”.  When Liz pretends to know all about fishing, George calls her sarcastically dubs her Izaak Walton.

Izaak Walton (1594-1683) was an English writer known for The Compleat Angler (1653), a famous prose and poetry celebration of fishing. His name was mentioned by Mr. Mooney before ‘fishing’ for Viv’s glasses in “The Loophole in the Lease” (TLS S2;E12) in 1963. 
Once George is out of sight, Cory arrives with some store-bought fish to fool George.

George and Liz decide to bet on who can hike back to the campsite fastest. Luckily, Liz has Cory waiting in a car to assure that she wins!

Back at camp, Liz is patiently waiting for George, who trudges in weary and parched. Liz confesses that she got back so early she had time to wash her hair so there is no water. 
Next morning Liz and Cory conspire to make George think she’s an expert duck hunter and sharp-shooter!  Liz takes aim at the tree, and on cue Cory tosses a duck at her feet.

A target practice ensues where a discretely hidden away Cory clangs an anvil every time Liz shoots at a distant horseshoe. A suspicious George gets wise to Cory and Liz’s scheme and trains his rifle on on the tree. A frightened Cory comes down but all ends happily.

In the bedtime tag, Liz tries to wake a sleeping George. She sees a note pinned to his chest that says:

A Creative Life - Year Two, Month One
Look, look, I’m a day early!
I started the New Year in Aberdeen, staying up way too late and putting the world to rights. My friends ‘P’ and ‘C’ moved up to Scotland for P’s work in mid-2015, and are making a life for themselves up there, but a group of us made the (long, very long) journey to the East Coast of Scotland for Hogmanay. It was epically awesome, and just what I needed after three solid weeks of being ill. Thanks to the mingling of visiting and visited people over December, I have so far infected Cambridgeshire, Merseyside, two separate parts of Scotland and possibly Tyneside. Sharing is caring!
Anyway – creative stuff:
A TV company contacted me about my availability for the next few months, which was pleasing to know that they’ll hire me again. A brief period of lawyering to pay the mortgage is putting a bit of a spanner in the works with my timetable, but that all clears up shortly. When the lawyering is done I will direct my attentions to the TV job sites, but given where I’m now going, I’m going to be much more focused in terms of the TV roles I apply for.
Writing is… ongoing. I wrote a fic! First time this year I’ve posted something, and it’s had some really nice comments. Other fic continues to be worked on. The idea mentioned last month generated thanks to @phrynesboudoir continues to fizzle along in the back of my brain as I think about how to develop it; the radio play for @rithebard is about half way through its first draft. A plethora of ideas are on my ‘to be written ASAP’ list. One of the people I spent Hogmanay with gave me *another* idea, which I’m going to try to develop as well.
Theatre. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin:
If you follow me on Instagram you’ll know that I spent the first full weekend of the year in London. I went because I have been wanting to apply to a Directors Network run by the Young Vic, and as part of the application process they want you to talk about a show you’ve seen at their theatre. So I went to see ‘Once in a Lifetime’, being advertised heavily off the back of it being Harry Enfield’s first stage role. He was quite good, but his part wasn’t as big as it had been made out to be in the publicity. The theatre itself was really lovely – all warm and intimate and with comfy bench seating. I was on the back row in the second gallery – a row of seats so out of the way that they had to send an usher to personally escort me so that I didn’t get lost! The audience was younger and more ethnically diverse than I think I have ever seen before in a theatre space. I also discovered both a second hand theatre bookshop with its own tiny performance space in the back *and* a tapas restaurant directly across the road. My bank account wept.
From there I headed to Southwark Playhouse, which has taken over what appears to be the bottom couple of floors of a late 60’s office building near Elephant & Castle tube station. The bar sold tea! Which given that by now it was raining, dark and windy, was greatly appreciated. I saw The Tempest, adapted to a 90 minute, straight through running time, with only 5 people in the cast, and one of those was a musician who didn’t have any lines. There was tripling of actors into roles, with the demarcation achieved with minimal on-stage costume changes. This was excellent. I really enjoyed it, the music was very cleverly used to create atmosphere even before the show began, and it was once again a really intimate space with, once again, bench seating. Here, they’d made the audience a part of the action, by having the cast sit and perform on the seating banks, and by the way the seating had been arranged in the space. I’m explaining this badly, but trust me; it was very cleverly done, and as ever, has given me some ideas to nick for my own practice.
After an evening on @ashbless sofa in Tooting (it’s very comfy), I meandered back to central London and wandered around The National Gallery for a bit before I headed to Kings Cross Theatre to see the last performance of The Railway Children – the play of the film of the book. This owed more to the film than the book, and the huge number of scenes meant that they had to be really creative in the staging. This was so well done, and the set moving guys got a well-deserved standing ovation at the end. This production also features a full size, genuine steam train that they’ve borrowed from the National Railway Museum in York. As a theatre experience went, this was the least satisfying of the weekend. I was on the back row once more, and the seat was the least comfortable of the three (with the most expensive ticket price). The building was a temporary marquee erected for the run of the show, and there was insufficient seating in the foyer area, where everything was over-priced. Good show though – and I cried at the end. I am also fairly sure that as I meandered back towards the tube, I walked past Lin Manuel Miranda, whose show In The Heights was showing in the same theatre later in the evening.
I had an interview for a Technical Director role for a show going into development. I got the role and will have three days’ work (at this point) at the end of March.
@edfortune and I went to Edinburgh, where we had managed to acquire press night tickets to Picnic at Hanging Rock. It was excellent; truly excellent. We spent the journey back to his brother’s house on the train debating reasons why we might not want to give it a ‘ten out of ten’ in the review we were going to write. In the end, we couldn’t come up with anything, and it was awarded those rare full marks when we wrote it up. It’s unclear whether this is going to tour anywhere else, but if it does I strongly recommend it.
The following weekend Ed and I headed back to London to see a recording of Citation Needed at the YouTube Space in London. We are now plotting how we get to the point where we can use the studio spaces they have there. We followed this up with a trip to The National Gallery, weaving our way through the edge of the Women’s March on London as we crossed the top of Trafalgar Square. We were at the gallery to see the Australian Impressionists exhibition. There was some truly outstanding art, and at least one moment of ‘I’ve stood on that street; I can tell you exactly where that’s been painted from’ about one of the Melbourne street scenes. Neither of these things are really theatre, but it provides you with a consecutive narrative…
I’ve been to a CPD session about devising theatre, which came in very handy earlier today when I had an interview at the same theatre about an opportunity to spend a week devising a piece of theatre for 6 – 11 year olds. My friend Carmen and myself are trying to see whether we can put together something Brexit related, and how we’d do that. We’ll find out by the end of the week whether we’ve got it. The interview felt really good; I knew two of the three people on the panel fairly well, as I’ve been going to the programme of events they run for emerging theatre makers for the last year. I think I met the third person at the recent-ish Christmas Do.
I’ve also spent much of this month getting out of bed at 2.45 am on Monday and Tuesday mornings to rehearse for Terror by Night Train which was broadcast on Sherri’s Playhouse last night. It’s been a lot of fun, and as its audio work I’ve done it all in my pyjamas!
I am also waiting to hear back about another opportunity at a local theatre, and from the Young Vic as I actually have submitted my application to join their Directors Network.
So ‘theatre’ continues to move along nicely. Now I just need more hours in the day to fit in all the stuff I need to do!

19. Sense8 getting the finale it deserves

Netflix cancelled the sci-fi drama in June 2017, but the subsequent outpouring of heartbreak and adoration was so overwhelming that they were inspired to greenlight a two-hour finale episode. Savor it, sensates – you’ve earned it.
