basically мартенички are red/white twisted threads that are given out to friends, relatives, colleagues on 1st of march in bulgaria, it has an ancient balkan pagan origin

in romania, they have mărțișor which is something similar but it's worn mostly by women and kids, men wore it rarely

basically these red/white threads are tied to blooming trees if u see a swallowtail or a stork or a blooming tree, the point of the custom is to bring fortune to the wearer (in bulgaria, there used to be this custom where u put the martenitsa under a big rock and later, you'd look under the rock and make omens based on what ur seeing - types of bugs, worms, etc)

also, interestingly, there's the figure of баба Марта in bulgaria and the figure of baba dochia in romania - they're some sort of temperamental grandmas who can be very cruel, bulgarian baba marta can be angry but she can also quickly become calm and happy, this references the quick weather changes in march

perhaps there was some sort of dacian/thracian elderly female deity that had something to do with fertility, fortune and spring? maybe this is the origin of the holiday?

here's what I think is interesting about writing an event from many POVs: A character changes based on who has the POV. Multiple shadows of a singular character can be seen by just throwing the camera to a different person.

For example, early in Beyond the Aegean, during his Byzantine days, Heracles is indubitably one of the most powerful presences in the East. And he loves it, he loves the prestige and glory that comes with it. He proudly declares himself as the true lord of the East and the only legitimate successor of the Roman throne. But he words it in a way where one would think that it is his God-given right, and it is his heirloom to claim and defend. He views himself as doing a service to the Byzantine people.

However, in Crown of the Eagle, aka Serbia's POV, Heracles is seen as a vain and somewhat mean teenager, who does care a lot about his people but fucks up eventually. He's not "the legitimate heir to the throne", but an arrogant child on purple robes who got too drunk on newfound power. Miroslav is straightforward and curt, he doesn't engage in purple prose or needless philosophies as Heracles does. You get to see Heracles as what he is, a human. Not a heir, not a lord, not a God, just a person with a heavy responsibility whose attitude doesn't match the duty.

Further, in the Rose-Hearted, aka Bulgaria's POV, is when you truly get to see Heracles' worst side. Dimitar's disdain for Heracles drips all over his words to the point where he refuses to speak about him without adding an insulting nickname or mentioning a demeaning characteristic of Heracles' character. But even so, on some occasions he can be considered the most honest of the bunch about Heracles' flaws or atrocities. To Dimitar, Heracles is a mad nation, illogical, who has no rights to the throne and is holding it against those who are far stronger than him. It gets better overtime, however. To the point where Dimitar doesn't feel that adding an insulting nickname for Heracles is necessary anymore.

APH Bulgaria 🇧🇬 Headcanons

He works as a truck driver and hence he often travels around, especially in the Balkans and Central Europe

He enjoys drinking and partying with his fellow Balkaners

He is bi and in a relationship with Romania (RoBul 4Ever 💖)

He speaks Bulgarian, Greek, Turkish, Russian, English and German fluently

He has tattoos all over his arms, with most of them being inspired by Bulgarian folklore

He works out and he’s got quite strong and muscular physique 

He is Orthodox Christian, but he doesn’t take the faith as seriously as Poland does, he sees it as a more cultural thing

His facial features are combination of his Slavic, Mediterranean and Bulgar roots

He has a great taste in music and has a great singing voice

He has a rose garden and produces rose oil

He also has an animal farm, where he milks cows, goats and sheep, and hence he produces his famous Bulgarian yogurt

He often fights with Greece over who has the best yogurt

He is often perceived as dumb, lazy and even violent by Western nations, but in reality he is very wise and kind, still a bit lazy at times

He is proud of himself for inventing the Slavic script

Hopefully we're not the only one experiencing this, but the hatered toward APH Turkiye on rp is really concerning. Especially if its not nyo version, because nyo is loved because Hurrem Sultan ig. Almost noone wants to rp, and if they do, then it's only insulting Turkiye. Never any positive relations.

Inb4 - jest I am aware of the history of Balkans and Armenians, thank you.

But Poland and Russia are very often showed as "hihi I hate you (but not that much were still family)", yet when it comes to Turks they can't have one nice thing, even in past, even if they had/have extremely good relations with XYZ 🤨 if three wars are enough to cancel anything other then why there are any positive relationships between countries

(If you're doing Poland and Russia that way - that's fine, I'm not telling you to delete this relation)

France? Ukraine? England? Poland? Russia? There's like 5 users of all this countries combined, that we've met in our "career" that wanted to write something, other ignored.

That's your lack of knowledge and your personal prejudice.

I do get that you don't like politics of modern Turkiye, I get that you're playing as a nation that had wars, my favourite muses are Georgia and Kurdistan, b u t there's a difference between "oh yeah they fought bloody wars in past but I acknowledge both past and present in their relationship, so my muse wont be too found of Turkiye" and "I will ignore anything thats not a war so I can insult your character".

Sorry for rant, but like seriously, hetalia rp fandom turns into 1821's Greece as soon as Turkiye enters the chat

y’know, I’ve always wondered something about aph bulgaria

like

when was he born? was he born in the 7th century, or was he born in the 9th-10th century when slavs and bulgars mixed? does he look like the bulgars? or like modern-day bulgarians?

1. was he born during the 7th century? if so, old great bulgaria would be his father, volga bulgaria would be his brother. did he speak bulgar language, did he use to live in a yurt, did he use to praise tangra? did he forget his original language, did he start speaking slavic as bulgars got assimilated by the slavs, thus becoming a slav?

2. or was he born from the union of bulgars and slavs in the 9th-10th century? then, he’d be a slav & a christian throughout his entire life. perhaps there was another representative/avatar of the bulgar khaganate on the danube before him who was the descendant of old great bulgaria and who is also his parent (the avatar of a slavic tribe would be his other parent), this would make old great bulgaria his grandpa and volga bulgaria his uncle

3. or was he a random slav who simply inherited the name bulgaria from the original representative/avatar of the bulgar khaganate who’s also the descendant of old great bulgaria? then, he wouldn’t biologically descend from the bulgar family, he’d only have some sort of a spiritual connection (like being adoptive) which kinda makes sense if you look at genetics (bulgars were eurasian nomads while modern-day bulgarians are europeans with ~2% asian ancestry, >40% of bulgarian ancestry is slavic and >40% is balkan, bulgars weren’t numerous, their language disappeared, leaving not more than a dozen of words in modern bulgarian, there are barely any traces of their culture)

4. or he popped out of nothing once the bulgarian ethnicity appeared after all the slavs and the bulgars had mixed, like he has no biological mom or dad

if theory 1. is correct, then wouldn’t bulgaria stand out among today’s bulgarians? will he feel like a foreigner in his own country whenever he remembers his childhood? or maybe he’s forgotten ever being bulgar

if 2, 3 or 4 is correct, then he wouldn’t stand out and wouldn’t feel like that

Oh my god haha I’ve never gotten an ask before, so had to stare at this for a second

I assume you’re asking about Hetalia since I’ve made half a million posts about how many Hetalia ships I severely dislike so yea I’ll talk about the ones I like

Also I’d like to preface by saying my interpretations of characters are based loosely on canon, and more on history and culture since I’m kind of a nerd in that regard. *Ahem*

Firstly I’d say SuFin. I’m not gonna lie and say their history is perfect and their people make fun of each other a lot but I’d say they’re still on good enough terms

DenNed is another one, I really like this because Danes and the Dutch are obsessed with each other, information brought by my Dutch best friend, and I just think they are so similar but also opposite enough that it’s cute

RoBul because even people irl who have never even heard of Hetalia say that Romania and Bulgaria as countries act like they’re dating, and I think it’s hilarious. Plus out of all of the Balkan countries this is like the least problematic ship out there

PoLiet as well. This can get rocky historically and I think some people who don’t really know history can make this super problematic super quickly, but certain interpretations aren’t bad. Plus in modern day we’re super close. I say ‘we’ because I’m Polish lol. Even the people. We poke fun at each other sure but we still really like each other

FrUk I think is just silly. Do they get along? No. Are they in any way similar? No. Does this ship have any redeeming qualities? No. Do I ship it just because I think that’s funny? Yes. They’re bitter old men who have centuries long discourse and I think that’s absolutely hilarious

There’s some others I do like, but don’t consider my favourite ships as well, so I promise there’s more lol but for now I think that’s a good list 💪 if you wanna know about any specific ones lmk
