Not In This Life
Paring: Eren x gn! Reader
Warnings: manipulative eren, violence, spoilers for season 4.
Genre: angst
Summary: Eren confronts you, Armin, and Mikasa about how he actually feels. Is that all really true though? Maybe your confession will give you an answer.
THIS WAS A REQUEST!! I tried to save the ask as a draft and it disappeared 😭 sooo thank you anon for requesting and I’m sorry it’s not attached.
Tumblr media
This wasn’t what was supposed to happen. Not like this. The tension in the room was dangerously thick. Gabi sat at the table with Armin, Mikasa, and you.
Your hands were tightly clutching your thighs as Armin spoke to her. She killed Sasha. Your roommate. Your friend.
“We won’t kill you,” Armin said, his eyes downcast.
“Why not? I know you must want to.” Gabi’s eyes were filled with a dim glow.
“Why would I want that?” He sighed. “Always with the killing. It’s all you ever think about… just like someone else I know.”
The door opened suddenly, and footsteps entered the room. It was Eren.
"Oh, look. It's the brat that killed Sasha."
The three of you gasped upon seeing him. He looked so different and you could tell the light from his eyes was gone. Now just a dull glow. Your breath hitched in your throat at the sight of him.
“Eren..”
Eren’s hand raised to show a deep cut on his palm, blood trailing out. He sat down at the table across from everyone.
“I don’t want any trouble.” He said, his voice deep and sullen. “More conflict isn’t necessary to solve Eldia’s problems. Hange and the others are fine. We’re just relocating them.”
“Eren.” Armin started, surprising even himself almost. “We’ve all wanted to talk to you too.”
It almost seems too surreal. Your thoughts swirled through your head as you tried to listen to Armin’s words.
“…did they really convince you to join their side?”
Silence. Eren’s gaze was set on the white tablecloth. His blood oozed out of his wound and the crimson liquid stained the cloth.
“I am free, Armin.”
The words made you shudder. Mikasa and Armin both tensed next to you.
“My actions are governed by nothing but my own free will.” He continued.
“So you’re saying this was all on you?” Armin asked, his voice a bit shaky in disbelief.
“Yes-”
Mikasa shifted and cut in. “No. You’re being manipulated! The Eren we know would never involve civilians and children in war, even if they were enemies.”
“And you wouldn’t put us at risk either. You care about us more than anything.” You argued, making Eren’s gaze shift to you. His eyes were different, anything but loving. This was no longer the kid you fell in love with.
“Right?” Mikasa added, her tone becoming shakier and her eyes glossy. She stood up at the table. “You saved me from those kidnappers back at the cabin. You wrapped this scarf around me because you care!”
“I said keep your hands on the table, Mikasa.” Eren’s voice was sharp. She was startled by him and sat back down. You glanced towards Gabi next to you and her eyes were wide in dread, not looking at anything but the table.
Eren explained about his talk with Zeke and the Titans. “Armin.”
The blonde looked up at Eren.
“What made you start visiting Annie? Do you really believe it was your own free will?”
“W-what?” Armin’s eyes widened. “I don’t-”
“If memories play a major role in shaping us into who we are, then a part of you has become Bertholdt. Do you understand? An enemy within an enemy. He’s gotten in your head. You’re the one being manipulated by the enemy.”
“Hey! Why would you-?” Mikasa quickly cut in.
“You’re being controlled too.” Eren quipped. His eyes then met yours. “And so are you.”
He made your breathing quiver as you refused to believe him, you wanted to refuse. But the way his eyes held no sentiment or remorse for his words signified everything.
Eren looked back to Mikasa. “The Ackerman clan was designed perfectly to protect the King. Your instincts were dormant until I awakened it inside of you when I ordered you to fight. Your blood mistook me as the host you needed to protect.”
“No- that can’t be.” She whimpered and clenched the tablecloth in her hands.
“It can’t?” Eren’s tone had a bit of surprise in it. “Why not.”
“Because it wasn’t a mistake.”
Eren stopped her and continued clarifying her Ackerman blood background.
“No, I-” She whispered.
“In other words: slaves. You're a slave, Mikasa.”
Armin stood up abruptly and slammed his hands on the table.
“Stop! Leave her alone!” He pleaded. You glanced at Mikasa and you could see her holding back her tears. Her head was down and you quickly placed your hand on hers in consolation, she grasped tightly onto yours.
You were only half paying attention to Eren’s speech. Now, your fixation was settling your friend. Your thumb swiped over her hand in small circles. Her soft cries escaped her lips.
It wasn’t until you heard Eren say those horrible words that you stopped.
“Ever since I was a kid, Mikasa. I've always hated you.”
“Eren, how could you say that to her?” Armin yelled and climbed over the table, desperate to grab at Eren.
Mikasa shoved you off of her and quickly stood up. Her hands seized Armin and pinned him down to the table, his arm bent dangerously behind his back.
“Mikasa, let go!” You shouted and gripped her elbow.
Armin looked at her in shock and she quickly let go of him. Mikasa backed away with tears streaming down her face and gasped at what she had done.
“No, I-I was just…” She couldn’t even finish her sentence before Eren cut her off.
“You see? That blood is all you are.” Eren said.
You held an arm up in front of Mikasa as Armin once again jumped onto the table and swung his fist at Eren.
Gabi stood up abruptly as the table flipped over and Eren fell back on the floor. Armin let out a yell and raised his fists again as Eren quickly stood up.
You both watched in horror as Eren punched Armin in the jaw, evading his other attempts to hit him. Eren grabbed the collar of Armin’s uniform and threw him into the wine cabinet, bottles and glasses toppling over and shattering on impact.
“Eren!” You yelled with tears in your eyes. You were about to take a step forward to break them up when Mikasa held you back.
Turning towards her with wide eyes, she shook her head, the tears still falling down her face. “No, he’ll hurt you too.”
“Jeager!” Three soldiers quickly came into the room upon hearing the commotion.
Eren stood back and watched Armin try to get back up. “I’m fine. I’ll handle this.”
“Just tell me where Zeke is.” He said.
Armin weakly raised his fists again and that’s when Eren beat him. Again and again.
“Eren, stop!” You yelled. Tears now rushed down your face as you watched Armin get beaten up mercilessly. The blonde dropped to the floor in a heap, blood trailing out of his mouth.
“Armin.” You pushed off Mikasa’s arm and quickly knelt beside Armin on the floor. Turning him over, you brushed the hair out of his eyes and used your sleeve to wipe the blood off.
Your hard stare met Eren’s eyes. “What the hell is wrong with you? How could you do this to them? After everything we’ve been through.”
“Funny… you used to follow every choice I made.” He said with the same dull voice, his eyes searching yours for the reaction he craved. “Unless those feelings of yours never went away.”
You paused, he knew?
“It was cute at first, I’ll admit, but like Mikasa, it seems like you were never your own person. Pathetic. Everything you did was to always appeal to me, wasn’t it?”
No (y/n), don’t let him manipulate you. This is what he wants.
“Every day you stood by me with hope that I would love you the way you loved me. Tell me, how does it feel knowing all that work you did was for nothing?”
You gritted your teeth as tears continued to fall.
“This isn’t about me, not about us! This is about you and we don’t want you to do something that you will regret.” Swallowing the lump in your throat, you slowly rose to your feet and glared at Eren. “Yes, you figured it out, Eren, and you’re a damn fool if you try to deny how you felt too!”
Eren’s breath hitched and his eyes widened in surprise.
“Remember all those times we snuck out after hours and talked about our future? It didn’t matter what crazy scenario we made up each time, we were always together in the end!” You yelled. “I don’t think a man who spent his youth 'hating' me would allow himself to become so vulnerable. You told me everything.”
Mikasa knelt by Armin and cradled him in her arms. You moved closer to Eren, the sudden sound of guns cocking made you tense up as the guards all trained their rifles on you.
Eren quickly held up his hand at the guards. His eyes never left yours as they lowered their weapons. Honestly, his immediate defense surprised you.
“Is this what freedom is to you?” You continued, gesturing to your two friends still kneeling on the floor. “It looks like now you’re the one who's a slave, and your master is a worthless bastard.”
Eren gritted his teeth and scowled at you. “Let’s go.” He gripped your upper arm tightly, the other guards doing the same to Mikasa and Armin. “Take the brat that killed Sasha, too. We’re going back to the place where it all started... Shiganshina.”
Gabi stumbled against the soldier's grip while Armin and Mikasa went with no struggle. Eren still hadn't moved yet, keeping you in place. You clenched your teeth in pain as Eren tightened his grip every time you twisted your arm to break free.
“Sir?” One of the guards asked from the doorway.
Eren shifted his vision away from you. “Take them. We’ll be down shortly. I have some business to take care of first.”
The guards escorted your friends away from you. Now, you were all alone. With Eren.
Silence rang between you two as his other hand gripped your other shoulder. He turned you to face him, but you kept your gaze down.
“Hmph, you spent years standing by my side, and now you can’t even look me in the eye.” Eren tutted and gripped your chin with his hand, forcing your eyes to meet his. “There we go.”
You tried to break from his grip, but his hands only tightened more and you had to resist struggling when it began to hurt.
“Were you ever going to tell me?” He asked suddenly. The question seemed innocent, but his eyes told a whole other story.
“Tell you-”
“Don’t play dumb with me, (y/n). I’ll tell you right now it’s not the wisest decision.”
“Y-yeah. The day you left.” You muttered with tears in your eyes.
"I see.” His tone turned solemn.
“Eren, I love you.” You started, pausing briefly to take a shuddering breath and try to rid your tears. “W-was any of it… ever real?”
The memories, laughter, adventures... anything?
He stared at you, taken aback by your words. “You said love not loved... you still love me?”
You sniffled as the tears slipped down your cheeks, trying to avoid his gaze. “Y-yeah, I still do.” You didn’t want to. With all the actions Eren has pulled recently, you didn’t want to. But yet, you still did.
“You shouldn’t.” He commented, thumb swiping over to brush one of your stray tears.
“I don’t want to.”
“But you do.”
Silence washed over you. His eyes were piercing under the grip he still had on your chin.
“Why?” You asked. “Why this way, there wasn’t any other option?”
This time his gaze evaded yours. “No.” He released a heavy sigh and something changed in his eyes. It’s like any small ounce of compassion he held just faded. “It’ll work out in the end. This isn’t over, (y/n). You always come running back to me and I always welcome you.”
Jerk.
A sob left your lips and you managed to rip your face out of his grip. “You know what, Eren?”
Eren’s gaze stiffened when he heard the tone in your voice. “What.”
“I don’t care what you do. Whatever the hell you do, just know I’ll never stop loving you.”
“Don’t you understand?!” His hands grabbed your wrists tightly. “You can’t love me.”
“Eren, ah- you’re hurting me.”
“Don’t you get it? Things aren’t going to end the way you hope.”
“I don’t care-”
“You should!”
Your wrists were still clutched tightly in his grip, but he loosened his hold enough to let you gently cup his face.
“If it’s not in this life, then another one perhaps. I love you, Eren.”
Eren’s face scrunched up in anger, a distraught look crossing his features. “N-no, (y/n). Please, you can’t. The worst has yet to come.”
“Tell me.” You pleaded, your thumb swiping over his cheekbone. “Tell me you don’t love me. I just want to hear you say it.”
Eren stayed silent and dropped his stare. Thoughts ran through his mind.
“Tell me.” You urged.
“I…”
He couldn’t.
“It’s safer for you if I don’t.”
“That didn’t answer my question, Eren.” You scoffed.
“Fine.” His voice was hard. “I love you.”
His hand moved from your wrist to grasp your palm. “But I can’t. You’re right, maybe in another life, we can make this work.” Eren’s eyes met yours. “Just not this one.”
“Wait-”
“Everything I’m doing is to protect you!” He yelled. You blinked at him.
Protecting you? It didn’t make sense. He’s only started a war Eldia wasn’t ready to fight.
He took your hand in his and placed a light kiss on your knuckles. Your eyes softened at the sudden gesture.
A soft metal clinking was heard and before you could even register what happen, your wrist was shackled. The other cuff latching to his own.
“Let’s go.”
“Eren-”
“I told you, (y/n).” Eren looked at you with tears in his eyes. “Not in this life.”

Unbreakable promises | Levi Ackerman
Notes : Levi x Baker!f reader, soft Levi , Season 4 , after the war , fluff
Summary : Levi returns to you after the war
Tumblr media
I was sitting in my bakery , reading those letters that he used to send me.
Even though his letters had been interrupted for a year , I still kept every letter from him hoping that he would return as he promised me Before departing for his mission .
Months had elapsed since the end of the war, I haven't been able to gain any knowledge about him since , No matter how much I ask or how much I try to find him I don't Obtain any useful information , I have no clue except that I trust that he will stay alive , He always keeps his promises, so he can't break them this time, right?
Now, after a month or a year , The only thing I'm aware of that he always comes back to me no matter how long he is gone, he always finds his way to me .
I smell his handkerchief that he gave me before he left, his smell is still lingering in it.
It enhances my nostalgia , but it makes me come back to life for even a few seconds , since he left and I feel like I am losing myself with him, It was as if my soul had accompanied him and left me , as a helpless body just waiting for his return.
I read the first letter I received from him, It was awhile after my brother's death. he was apologizing for the death of my brother In one of the missions against the titans , who was his companion in the Survey Corps, putting the blame on himself.
I remember how much I cried at that time, cause I missed my brother so much, and yet I do not blame anyone for that . I went to him after that at the Corps headquarters with some bread and roses.
I had heard a lot about him from my brother , I know how close my brother was to him. I do not deny my admiration for him even without meeting him.
I expressed my gratitude to him for taking care of my bother all this time, I'm not blaming him for anything I understand how much my brother aspired to discover beyond the walls , I'm thankful that he's been by my brother's side for all these years.
His response that time is still etched in my mind , Despite his sharp features, I shed tears in his eyes . He remained composed and before I departed, he thanked me for my visit , and asked me to let him know if I needed anything.
After that I started frequenting his headquarters under the pretext that I was bringing them bread, I used to take advantage of every chance to see him and talk to him, even watching him from afar.
Even though he was known for being cold and strict, I felt his delicate treatment of me .
Over time , We both seemed to like each other .
He asked me to have tea with him away from headquarters , To talk about a topic related to us . His words at that time will remain unforgettable to me. He asked me to listen to him without interrupting until the end.
" I believed that I was created to be a soldier that I would dedicate my life for humanity. But despite my effort not to admit it that I could do something other than fight ,but I realized that my heart is also selfish Even if Love is not for me , I have fallen for you . I didn't know that admitting feelings is more difficult than fighting a battle but I will ask you this just once , do you accept me ? Even though my life could end at any moment ? Do you accept waiting for me , y/n ? "
His words were able to make my tears flow, tears of joy or disbelief, “yes , I accept you , Levi Ackerman.” Tears combined with a wide smile.
A smile appeared on his face, and he stood up asking for my hand, kissed it, then he hugged me picking me up from the ground.
Our relationship lasted for years. He was overprotective, very jealous, and possessive, but in an acceptable way.
In spite of the fact that he was not great at appearing his sentiments, he despised for anything awful to happen to me, and he took great care of me and made beyond any doubt that I continuously felt fulfilled.
Be that as it may, he continuously feels blameworthy towards me by not being able to spend time with me. Since of his consistent busyness, he would attempt to form up for it by sneaking out of the headquarters at night and investing the night with me. Indeed when he endured from insomnia, he cherished to rest in my lap.
months could pass without knowing anything about him.
Even though I was crying because of my longing for him, I patiently waited for him. Upon seeing him, all the sorrow I had felt vanished.
Unlike his previous goodbyes, this one was different. He gave me his handkerchief and asked that I keep it. "This time I may be absent for longer, but you assured me that you would be okay and care for yourself until we meet again."
Then he kissed me on the forehead, hugged me tightly, and promised me that he would send me letters whenever he could.
I had a Faith in his words even though I was unsure of the duration of his absence, but he has a genuine love for me and will fight to return for me .
My sorrows were interrupted by the smell of the bread that I put in the oven this morning. I put the letters on the table and went to look at the bread that was already cooked, while I was busy putting the bread out of the oven. I heard the sound of the bell that moved as the door opened. I heard someone's steps behind me, "we didn't open yet."
" y/n " I spin on my heel looking to the familiar voice, it's him .
He was showing signs of war. There were signs of a large wound on his face and eye, and he was leaning on a crutch, but that is not the important thing. The important thing is that he has returned now. I ran and threw myself into his arms without thinking for a second He also welcomed me with an embrace, throwing the crutch from his hand.
He's finally home .
“I knew that you would come back, and that you would not leave me,” I said as I sobbed.
“Shh, everything is fine, I’m here now.” He interrupted the hug and wiped the tears from my cheeks. I looked at him as he ran his hand through my hair, “That’s enough. Don’t go again. Please stay with me.” “I'm not going anywhere, sweetie.”

Yelena doesn’t feel regret. She just doesn’t — there has never been a moment where Yelena has felt regretful over any decision she has made. Nothing has been important enough to damage the profound impact of her final goal, which has always been to assist Zeke, to follow Zeke, to devote herself to Zeke.
But Yelena has to admit to herself that when she looks to the side and sees you, bounding across the dark lawn beneath her from her balcony, a smile of pure elation drawn on your face, that for the first time in her life, the dull ache in her chest might not be the impatience to get on with it all; instead, it might actually be regret.
For all of her life, Yelena has felt a sense of greater purpose in store, a meaning that transcends her body, making her only a vessel of power to help move along the plan of a lifetime — the plan to end an era of suffering and welcome in an age of peace and prosperity. There has been nothing that has ever made her hesitate, ever made her wonder if what she is doing is right.
Until now.
Every couple of minutes, a new group of heckling cadets swarm underneath the swift wave of lawn beneath her balcony, and it wasn’t until she caught sight of you in one of her shirts that she felt the weight of her actions suddenly clam up inside of her, leaving behind not a happy feeling of importance but an ache of fear — fear that drives her out of her room and down the flight of stairs to find you before you’re pulled into the swarm of bodies crowding around open crates of delicious, foreign wine.
“Y/N.”
Somehow over the noise, you hear Yelena’s voice and turn your head, catching her looming height in the angled darkness of the hallway. Nobody blinks an eye at her, which is unusual. Ordinarily, cadets marvelled at the sight of her, pushed forward into her vicinity in a sort of morbid curiosity at her curious impression. Even you, once, had looked at her in a stunned sort of shock, long before the shock transformed into wonder, and the wonder melted into adoration.
Manoeuvring around the excitement of your friends, you glance at one of them who looks at you questioningly and gesture towards the half-hidden figure standing guard in the dark. They follow your finger, gulp appropriately, and bow their head back into their original state of oblivious happiness, all in the name of good wine and good fun.
No blonde, blunt and brutally tall foreign woman will stop any of them from their night of drinking. They had, after years of torment from titans that came from no place but that blonde, blunt and brutally tall foreign woman’s previous home, deserved a night of fun.
Yelena welcomes you into her personal space with a smile; a cautious smile that barely lifts any of her features up, but a smile nonetheless, and you reach her with your own surprised joy and let her pull you gently down into the spiralling darkness and back towards one of the doors into a study.
Inside, the furniture is dripping with a dusty, moonlight glow, the windows flung open to let out the stench of stale wood and alcohol, the disinfectant choking in the broom cupboard joined to the right wall.
“I thought you’d already be at the party,” you say, trying to think of some reason for her guiding you here. There’s nothing indicating her purpose of being in this study, but she seems inclined to keep you here, blocking you in by putting herself between you and the now-closed exit door.
Yelena smiles, truly smiles, then and raises her eyebrows smugly. “There’s a party?”
“A party fully funded and catered to by your comrades,” you reply.
“Comrades,” she repeats, amused. “Please.”
“True, though. I can’t think of anyone in my squad who’s tried foreign wine before,” you continue, feeling your heart thump as Yelena steps over the invisible line between you both and smooths her fingers through your hair, thumbing the back of your head. “I haven’t had a drink since they retook Shiganshina!”
Yelena’s mouth twists at that. “The wine tastes like shit. I wouldn’t recommend it.”
“All you talked about once was this wine,” you counter, one brow raised suspiciously. “Best wine in Marley, you said.”
“I had to entice everyone somehow,” she replies. “Wine makes friends. Builds trust. It’s a universal peace offering.”
“Peace I’m apparently not allowed to take part in.”
Yelena frowns.
When she offered her services to Zeke and completely devoted herself to him and his cause, it came with the consequence of silence — her life and everyone’s future depended on it. Yelena wanted nothing more but to warn you of what was to come, even better to hide you from it, but in doing so would mean running the risk of everything they’ve all worked so hard to set in motion coming crashing down.
While Yelena placed her entire trust in you, she couldn’t assume the same for the others privy to the knowledge she has. Instead, she’s subjected to staring down at your confused expression in a permanent place of horror.
“Look, it’s not that you’re not allowed to take part in the fun tonight, I just think there are better ways to celebrate,” Yelena suggests, her hands finding themselves on your face, cupping you to stop you from turning away towards the disappearing cluster of cadets in the hallway. “Like with me, for example.”
Yelena knows she’s expected to be apart of the festivities happening tonight in an effort to create an alibi, but if missing out means ensuring that you don’t feel suspicious of her, or worse that you feel a distance pulling you further apart, then she’ll happily take that chance. There were loopholes in her devotion to Zeke, and she was sure he would understand should he have any grievances with her disappearance tonight.
But her stomach churns when you smile, thread your fingers through hers and pull her hands from your cheeks. “Unlike you, I happen to like spending time with other people.”
“I like other people, too, but I’d rather be with you if I had the chance,” Yelena replies. She watches closely as you bite your bottom lip to suppress a grin — all the good that does when it spreads over your face regardless.
“Stop…trying to change my mind,” you force out, leaning up on your toes to press your lips against hers. Yelena feels the tug worsen, her guilt hardening.
It is entirely her own fault that she happened to fall in love on this stupid island. She was only supposed to be here to speed along Zeke’s plan, but she had never factored in meeting someone like you, someone so unaccustomed to outsiders yet so welcoming of them.
If she closes her eyes, Yelena can still remember the first time she saw you, passing you by in the halls as she walked flanked by Hange and Levi. You turned to greet your superior soldiers with a smile and a salute, one that Hange simply nudged away with their hand followed by a quick fuss of your hair before continuing forward — and then your eyes met.
Whatever followed is insignificant when Yelena considers how she got from point A to B: point A being seeing you that day in the hallway and point B being now, where she looks at you and feels her entire body go rigid.
Yelena’s never felt love, either, but if she had to wager a guess, she’d say that love was what she felt when she saw you.
She pulls you in closer when you try to break away from your kiss, swallowing your laugh as she lifts you up off the floor and in a circle on the spot. She ignores the ache in her heart when you squirm away and nudge your nose against her cheekbone; tries to will away the guilt in her chest, the flipping of her stomach.
“Why don’t we just go together?” you compromise once she relents and sets you back on your feet. You stare up at her expectantly. “You might be surprised to find that people actually want to talk to you.”
“I think you mean interrogate me,” Yelena replies. She has a point — people don’t know if to trust Yelena or not, even though thus far she’s done nothing wrong except step off the enemies boat.
“Then… Why don’t we go and show our faces, spend some time in the fun, and then we can spend time together after,” you suggest, if only to see the light return to Yelena’s suddenly dark eyes. She peers at you, trying to figure out how someone as awful as her ended up with something as precious as you.
“Just as long as you don’t touch that shitty wine,” she counters.
Yelena flicks your chin when you roll your eyes.
“You and that bloody wine…”
“I mean it, Y/N,” she says. The way her voice sounds suddenly so somber and serious makes you pause, questioningly raising your brows at her face. “Please don’t.”
Yelena has already sworn her own voice away for Zeke’s noble cause, but she needn’t use her words to convey her true feelings. You search for any indication that she might be fooling around and find nothing. Yelena seems as serious about this as the scouts had once been about titans, and you fidget in space before swallowing and giving her a sincere nod.
“Fine,” you agree, reaching for her fists by her side. “I’ll skip the wine and stick to ale. But it’s your fault if I puke everywhere. I’ve never been good at handling it.”
“Consider me threatened,” Yelena remarks, trying to tame the hammering of her heart in her chest when you lace your fingers with hers and smile, all before pulling her towards the worn wooden doors that connect to the hallway and string of festive rooms full of unsuspecting soldiers downing bottles of wine.
Wine that Yelena knows will play a much larger role in the orchestration of Zeke’s great plan — but wine that she has managed to save you from. And she can only pray to whichever God took pity on her here in this hallway that you can understand her when the truth comes out.
