“Levi…”

You stretch your arms out to his side of the bed, expecting to feel his warm body. The late fall mornings were getting colder and you were yearning to cuddle beside him. But then you remembered: it’s nearly impossible for that man to sleep more than four hours a night, yet alone get him to sleep in the bed, even when he’s here in the comfort of home.

Our home, you think to yourself.

After the Female Titan attack on Stohess, Levi insisted that he move you inside Wall Sina, on the outskirts of Mitras. It was safer, he’d argued, and less likely to have a large-scale titan attack, as protecting you was always first and foremost in his mind. Outside the capital, on two acres of land, you’d found a small, cozy cottage, the perfect size for the two of you (“Smaller houses are easier to clean,” Levi had noted). It was just far enough away that people wouldn’t pry into your business; a place where Levi could be at peace. 

But in the months following Stohess, there would be no peace for Levi; in fact, you’d barely seen him. You kept yourself busy with making pastries for the local market and making the cottage a home for Levi to come home to. It had been three months with no word, but you knew he’d come back. He’d promised you.

And that promise was kept when he rode up to the picket fence surrounding your home a few months later. He was weather-worn and exhausted, and he held you in his arms like your very presence was bringing him back to life. He told you of Kenny and the MP’s, of the military coup, and Historia's upcoming coronation. His eyes cast downward when he spoke of Kenny, but there was a hope there too; something you hadn’t seen on his face in a long time, maybe ever.

You also had news for him: you were pregnant.

Your tiny bump was unnoticeable under the layers of your late-summer dress, and at first, he’d just looked at you, as if he was trying to process what you were telling him. You thought he was unhappy at first, but then his face softened and he held you tightly, whispering in your ear that this was the happiest he’d ever felt. 

(So there was more than one reason why Levi was smiling so broadly at Historia’s coronation ceremony.)

Finally, it seemed like there was some good in the world.

For the next two months, Levi and the Survey Corps stayed in Mitras, where he became involved in Queen Historia’s efforts to bring all the orphans out of the Underground. He invited you to be a consultant with him, but you’d refused; you didn’t feel educated enough to be in a room full of government and military officials, but at home Levi would ask your opinion on matters. Working together towards making the world a better place, having the man you love beside you, it felt like a dream. And every evening Levi’s hands would rest gently on your belly as you slept.

But no good thing lasts forever.

“Re-taking Shiganshina and filling the hole in the wall should only take a few days”, he’d said. “I’ll be back in a week.”

“We’ll be here waiting for you.” Your belly had grown in the months Levi had been home, and his hands always gravitated toward it, as if willing his protection to the baby inside.  

A week came and went, but Levi didn’t return. When another week passed with no word, you started to worry.

News finally reached the village of the massacre of the Survey Corps and the nine survivors who were awarded a medal of valor by the queen. Levi’s name was listed among the nine. You breathed a sigh of relief.

He’ll be home soon.

When he did return, there was a change, like a dark cloud hanging over him. You understood - he’d lost Erwin, who’d been his guiding light for so many years. And he was angry - angry that he wasn’t able to defeat the Beast Titan, that he wasn’t able to keep his promise. You were happy and relieved to have him home, but he wasn’t fully here.

The cold floors creak as you softly walk to the room that will soon be your child’s nursery and there is Levi, sitting in the wingback chair next to the window. Ever the light sleeper, it only takes a few steps of your walking into the room before his eyes flit open.

“Another rough night?” you ask as you walk towards the chair. 

“I just didn’t want to wake you. You should rest as much as possible.”

You knew Levi felt guilty for not being with you during much of the pregnancy, and so he made up for it by being extra protective when he was around. He’d barely let you lift a finger, which you’d tried to tell him was unnecessary, but did love being doted over. 

He pulls you towards him and you stand in between his legs as he starts gently caressing your belly. “How are you feeling this morning?”

“Fine, but I feel huge,” you sigh. “I still have three months to go… how am I already this big?” you ask, hoping that Levi will reply with, “You’re not that big,” or “You look beautiful,” but he’s silent, his forehead resting on your stomach.

“Levi…what’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” is his reply, but you know that’s not true. He hasn’t been fine since he returned, but what bothers you most is that he’s closing off his feelings.

“Hey,” you lift his head up to look at you, “don’t shut me out. I can tell you’re hurting. Just talk to me.”

You won’t be shut off from the man you love again. You won’t watch him being eaten away from the inside.

It takes him a few moments to respond, seemingly struggling to say the words out loud. “It’s just that everything I’ve known about the world has been wrong. Titans are humans. Kenny was my uncle. There are people - hell, a whole entire rest of the world - beyond these walls. Our duty as Scouts was to find out the truth, and we did that. But without Erwin, I’m not sure any of us know what to do with that truth.”

You sit on Levi’s lap as his heavy heart slowly begins to open up to you. “It’s only a matter of time now before we kill all the titans trapped in Wall Maria. Once spring comes, Hange plans for the Scouts to explore beyond the walls.” His arm, wrapped around your waist, pulls you in tighter. “My life has always been full of unknowns, but this..” he pauses and as you run your hands through his hair. “I don’t know what kind of world we’re about to open ourselves up to…and if I’m strong enough to protect humanity anymore.”

“You’re worried about the world you’re bringing your child into,” you add, your hands caressing his freshly shaven undercut. 

“I’ll protect you and our child with every inch of my being, but I hate that I don’t know what’s coming next.”

Levi has always been so sure of himself and his abilities. Erwin gave him a bigger reason to focus that brute strength. Now, Levi is like an unmanned ship careening into dangerous waters. 

And he needs you to be his anchor.

“The future is scary right now, no doubt about that. There are times when I’m so terrified of being a mother. But when I feel that way, the one thing that keeps me sane through it all, Levi, is knowing that I’m not doing this alone.”

“And you’re right, the world is changing - there’s nothing any of us can do about that. But think about where we came from, and how far we’ve come. Through it all, there’s been one constant,” your hand gently turns his face towards yours.

“Us.”

You lean your forehead against his. “We have each other. No matter what the future holds for you, me, and Paradis, I will be by your side.”

Levi’s shoulders drop as he lays his head on your chest. You love this man deeply and you know he loves you too. 

And whatever happens, you’ll face it together.

Attack on Titan final chapters and I skipped seasons 1 & 2 like a fool. So it was just 3 & 4 and they're a goddamn trip:

Its "if the universe is ok with Fry being his own grandpa" in the most roundabout way. He could have just fought god like a normal anime protagonist/antagonist (looking at you Ikari) but noooo had to go about it in the most backwards-idiotic-genocidal way possible.

Nothing says "I love my friends" like "let me be the thing to traumatize you so you can live a good long life".

And then, he tries to blame Mikasa and allows Armin to shoulder some of that guilt for reading a book.

Holy hell, you did not deserve that bird.

Sooo how do you feel about the aot ending.

i don’t think you meant how i feel compared to the manga ending but since it’s connected to my feelings i’ll go that route anyway :D

i was always super mixed on the manga ending. and don’t get me wrong there’s no plot difference, which is why it’s a little hard to explain why i think the anime executed it perfectly.

1: the manga ending felt rushed. specifically armin and eren’s last conversation, there wasn’t NEARLY as much depth. mappa changed that, with a bunch of very slight additions which ended up making a huge difference.

2: so did the pacing of (for instance) mikasa’s grieving under the tree, the extra pages passing along slowly with the end credits, historia’s last monologue about her memories of the future that eren gave her.

3: the manga also did VERY little in giving a glimpse into everyone’s lives in the epilogue. as armin is telling annie how important it is that paradis hears their story, there’s just panels of how onya, levi, etc looks like. yelena wasn’t there at all. the anime really did everyone justice.

even on my second reread of the whole manga, the ending just left me feeling really really empty and bummed out. it felt like nothing everyone ever did mattered. it was abrupt i guess? the anime better communicated the idea that YES while there will always be “titans”, aka war, violence, cruelty, no matter what, you can still hang onto hope. there is still love to be found.

really if aot was given a happy, everything worked out ending, then that would’ve made everything before that utterly pointless. aot was ALWAYS about love and hope in the face of death and cruelty. humanity will never not be human.

specifically in the final scene with the boy and the dog going to the hole in the tree, he has THE CHOICE to go in. unlike ymir, he isn’t being forced to hide and most likely die. could the worm be there? yes sure. it symbolizes that cycle of violence, but in this case, the boy has the FREEDOM to do what he chooses.

aot was always nuanced. there was NEVER any morally best or morally worst characters. everyone had sympathetic reasons, even when they did horrible things. i appreciate the tenacity(?) isayama had to tell a story like that. to this day and most likely forever, every fan will be divided on every damn thing. but that has nothing to do with how great the ending is (to me at least).

so tldr, the way the anime handled the ending made me love the ending period.

I know you didn’t really like the “violence is inevitable” thing in AOT but , isn’t it true tho? The world unfortunately really is like that, no matter how many times we go back in history, look at the current world situation, I think it was pretty realistic from Isayama to depict the world of aot like that, it’s disappointing because of how much it comes close to reality imo

What I do agree with is how Eren is forgiven, especially in the fandom, like 💀💀

But I think the destruction in Paradis happened exactly because of that, because the world never forgave Eren and the Jaegerists for the genocide

helloo sorry for taking so long to reply to this, i'm ridiculously slow with my inbox 💀

i have two things to say about this, the first is that i'm skeptical that isayama genuinely wanted to tell a story about the inevitability of violence, and the second is that a theme in fiction reflecting some aspects of reality doesn't then make it interesting or well-written.

i raise the first point because of characters like kenny and gabi, who undergo major development because their dependence on violence is challenged by a show of compassion from another character (in kenny's case, from uri; in gabi's case, from the braun family). to me these characters indicate that the author wants to convey optimism about the power of human relations, regardless of how extreme or cruel the circumstances are. rather than, 'violence is inevitable', these stories convey that, 'violence is not more powerful than compassion'.

the way the epilogue goes, it renders these previous themes nigh meaningless. of course, states don't follow the same emotional logic as interpersonal relationships, but then it makes me question: what was the point of the additional pages? why did armin's final pages profess his conviction in the efficacy of communication and ambassadorship?

why, instead, wasn't his last page him getting shot and killed after stepping off the boat? if the intention was to convey 'the inevitable tragedy of violence'.

the reason why is because i don't think that was actually the message isayama wanted to tell, but rather, it was damage control for an ending that awkwardly failed to convey consequences for eren's actions. eren kills 80% of humanity, but all the main character's parents survive, and so do they. eren kills 80% of humanity, but his friends tearfully express their gratitude for his good intentions, and presumably live out long and peaceful lives.

in an ending with plot contrivances this inane, an author might want to bring some 'realism' back into his story. therefore, the civilizational collapse of paradis is not an earnest contribution to the messages of aot, but just tacked-on course correction.

in aot it's not 'violence is inevitable', it's 'violence is inevitable for you filthy side characters'. which is really sad, because ramzi was the protagonist of his own story, too.

additionally, i want expand on why a theme being 'realistic' doesn't actually make it interesting. 'violence is inevitable' is like saying 'racism is inevitable'. sure, a cursory glance at global history can prove that people have been ravaged by ethnic and national prejudice, that it's ongoing today, and it will probably persist twenty years from now. but is it inevitable? what utility does that statement have, if not to resign ourselves to making less meaningful attempts at improvement?

a story does not reveal anything truthful about the human condition by neglecting to mention our capacity for forgiveness. at times, aot is very capable at telling such a story that balances both cruelty and compassion, but for some reason is intensely clumsy at scaling up these themes to the level of states and state conflict (marley, for example, is a horribly developed setting). therefore i often feel that rather than the epilogue telling a pessimistic story about humanity, it tells a pessimistic story about statehood. but maybe that's a topic for another post hehe

It’s been a while since I’ve been into EruRi or AoT in general, so I was hoping if you could help me catch up??

I’ve seen images of a new volume/chapter with Levi and a grown Falco and Gabi, but idk if this is going to be a new volume/epilogue or whatnot, and tbh I thought Yams was completely done with AoT when it finished back in??? 2020 I think??

Hello Anon! Welcome back to the fandom. So the new chapter is part of Shingeki FLY, a project announced in October that comprises an art book, a redraw of the final chapter of the manga, and a new chapter titled "Bad Boy", about the childhood of a "certain character".

Needless to say, this announcement caused HUGE speculation that the new chapter would be about Levi. In a Crunchyroll interview in January 2023 Isayama had previously said that he had no plans to create a new manga, but he did have some ideas for Levi's back story.

Can we expect additional backstories for characters such as Hange and the original members of Squad Levi? Isayama: Regarding Levi, I actually have something in my mind, but at the same time, I don’t know if I will be able to write that or not.

The release of the cover has all but confirmed that the new chapter will be about Levi and some fans have speculated that it will be set after the end of the manga and will feature Levi telling Gabi and Falco about his childhood or early years.

A smaller group of fans me included are desperately hoping that the new chapter might finally explain the mystery of why Levi appears in Erwin's father's classroom, but that's very much wishful thinking though 😅

Either way, we won't have to wait too long to find out, the first four pages will be released tomorrow night.

Unpopular Opinions game: ❤️💚💖

Ooooh let's see! As you probably know, my current brainrot is AoT, so I'm focusing on that for this dissertation 😆

❤: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?

I'll admit that, while I'm open to various ships, probably over 90% of what I read is rivamika and so my picture is pretty cropped. Also, I'm not afraid of the back button. But there are versions of Levi I've read that make you go "who is this character and why's he named as my blorbo?" It's worse in the few self-ships I've read (make him look more babygirl than Momiji Sohma) but he tends to be portrayed way, waaay more sweet and articulate than he is in canon. I can sort of forgive that up to some point, however, bc it's fanfic and it's self indulgent and we like to idealize our blorbos. I guess if my fave was Erwin, or Jean, or whoever, I'd tend to see their mischaracterizations more. However, the mischaracterization that stood out to me the most was in a rm fic where Mikasa acted the absolute opposite of herself. It was a modern AU, but it wasn't a case of different setting-different life-different traits (like, say, an articulate Levi in AUs where he had a good upbringing). She was downright vindictive, manipulative and conniving in that one. I recall I left a kudos after the first chapter because it had started well enough, but by the time I finished I couldn't bring myself to leave a comment. The story itself was interesting, but it was so far removed from her character that I just couldn't.

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?

Age.

And was very glad that an actual psychologist recently argued in a similar note.

💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series?

This is a hard one as I don't go around making popularity contests. One might be Levi's age, as still most fics make him 15+ years older than the 104th.

But the one I think is the most unppopular is that Eren can't possibly know what percentage of humanity he destroys in the Rumbling. He can't, NO ONE can at that point, because the actual extent of the damage and body count can't be known until weeks, if not months, after the Rumbling stops (they don't have internet or satellite phones so data assessment and communication takes time), and because the titans are no more after his death, he cannot remember this info from the future Attack titan (it's a closed time loop, so they can't see things in paths from after the time loop). It's just a silly thing, if you ask me, it's just an oversight from Isayama, who has proven to be shit with numbers, and he could have just said he wiped out "most of humanity", with Armin confirming the number in the epilogue. But people won't hear any of it.

(on a side note, 80% of humanity does not mean 80% of territory, as people are distributed unevenly across the globe)
