hello everyone, the annoying spaniard is back to rant about the cultural references i'm seeing on my pokemon scarlet playthrough! here's my previous post in case you want to check it out :)

i have many thoughts about zapapico cause it's most likely based on almería and granada and my family is from there and yeah... anyways

the house design of that town, with them being excavated in the stone like that, is definitely inspired by the house-caves of guadix (granada) [pics 4-6], cuevas del almanzora (almería) [pics 7-9], and many others (those are just the ones i know about / been to). the sourrounding landscape reminds me of almería and its tabernas desert but, based on its location and the fact that there's another more likely desert in the other side of the region, i would say all of that area is based on los monegros desert (aragón) [pics 10-12], the other extremely arid area in the country.

and now i wanted to talk extensively (i'm sorry) about probably my favorite part of the game so far... team star poison squad.

to start, let's talk about the location. tagtree thicket is based on the oma forest in the basque country (i sadly forgot to take more pics of the location in the game so you only get this screenshot of my team before entering the base)

this might be a reach, but oddly enough i think it might be also at least partly inspired on sierra morena. i genuinely only got this connection cause at the entrance to the forest an npc (once again i forgot to take a screenshot of it) tells you to be wary of the forest, as the area is full of bandits and rascals and whatnot. that reminded me of the bandolero culture and the romantization of it, which flourished in sierra morena and other mountainous areas of andalusia. in particular there was a legendary bandolero called curro jiménez that got his own tv show (he was basically a spanish robin hood). there's even a cartoon in andalusian tv about a ragtag group of bandoleros with a bomb opening song. this is not actually too far off of the characterization of the leader of team star's poison team (my new favourite character ever)...

where to start with atticus?? (btw why is that his name in english?? in spanish he's named henzo which makes much more sense imo) let's start with the obvious: he's a ninja (which actually is an incredible design choice i'm kissing the pokemon team in the lips rn). but apart from that, everything else is heavily spanish inspired. basically, all of his persona is taken straight out of what's referred to as the spanish golden age (more or less the 16th and 17th centuries). i imagine his speech patterns and personality are an homage to shakespeare in the english version, but in the spanish one he speaks just like don quixote and actually has a lot of similarities to that character. for those of you who don't know much about don quixote, it is known as the greatest literature work in the spanish language ever and was written by miguel de cervantes (to help you situate all of this, he was a contemporary of shakespeare. in fact, in school we learn they died on the same day but on different calendars or something like that, it's a whole thing). in the novel, alfonso is a noble who spends all day reading chivalric romances to the point he at some points loses his mind and thinks of himself as a medieval knight that has to defeat evils and save people and whatnot. don quixote's speech patterns are mocked within the novel for sounding antiquated (just like atticus' speech sounds old for us). other direct references to don quixote are the fact that in the flashback the fairy dude comments on how atticus is a nerd of ninja and epic novels [pic 1], and the fact that during his presentation atticus says he is a 'desfacedor de entuertos' [pic 2], the same expression don quixote uses (it would kinda translate to 'problem solver' i guess?).

apart from don quixote, there's also references to playwright calderón de la barca, most noticeable through atticus' dramatic attitude (his first words are 'jumping to scene' [pic 1] and in his picture he is bowing to you [pic 3]), as well as one particular line after you defeat him where he says an extremely calderonian line [pic 2]

so, hi. I've got a bit of an annoying question that you totally don't have to answer if you don't want to, but,,, I know you're into dc right? at least into batman? or idk I saw your long post about dick grayson rn and I know you post about batman/batfam (?) sometimes?

point is, I've never gotten into dc, never read a comic in my life and I've vaguely watched some of the batman movies while they were on tv but didn't really pay attention, but lately (as in the past two or three years) I've seen here on Tumblr talking a lot about batman and the batfam and all of Batman's adopted kids and how great they're and the found family dynamics and shit and ?? I kinda want to check it out nyself?

basically my question is, as someone who's never read/watched basically anything dc, where should I start? or is there a certain canon I should focus on? or if you don't wanna answer (which is totally fine) dyou know of anyone who may've already talked about this? I'm sure a million people have I just ?? don't even know where to start looking??

honestly a fandom this big and this diverse and with this much different canon it's a bit overwhelming, when I got into star trek at least I knew to start chronologically but with this I don't even know

not an annoying question at all!! in fact a very welcome question indeed, i love introducing ppl to new fandoms and i rarely get asks (srsly i've only gotten three in the entire history of this blog lol) so it's a two-for-one, win-win deal!

now to answer your lovely query:

yes i do love batman and yes i am a fan of dc and yes i'd be happy to help you on this journey of embarking on a new fandom, should you decide to continue! I'm actually a relatively new-age fan in terms of fully immersing myself in the content, I grew up with Teen Titans and later Young Justice, both of which I attribute much of my beginnings as a dc/batfamily fan to. I watched the Justice League and Batman animated shows when I was younger but they didn't stick as much as the aforementioned two and I know it seems like I'm going off on a tangent but this is relevant to my helping you, I promise!

Much of the comic material I've consumed over the years has degraded in memory - I don't remember most of the issues now, just a few panels and impressions - so I can't help you on the comic-reading front but there should be various accounts here on tumblr that do really good analyses and are much better than me at giving panel-based evidence. (I can think of @hood-ex off the top of my head). Even just searching through the tags of say, the Titans or Batman or the JL or any characters you already have in mind, should turn up at least a handful of comic panels from different issues, if you just want to start by lightly browsing those.

As for certain canon to focus on, the DC fandom is pretty famous for forcing its fans to root through multitudes of conflicting material (so. Many. Reboots.) and authors that have contradicted each other's works over the years, so the only thing I can really tell you is to pick and choose for yourself which pieces of canon you decide feel right for you. I know it's not really all that helpful but I really do recommend just going for the deep-dive and figuring out how to swim from there. Suicidal I know, sounds crazy for sure, but this is a fandom with some serious years under its belt - and all the changing attitudes and cultures that implies - and an excess of material from varying sources.

Young Justice and Teen Titans are both good shows for getting a feel for the world(tho both depict versions just different enough to be distinct in their interpretations) but they mess with canon a fair amount as well, so don't take everything they depict to be same across the board. In this regard, fanfiction actually IS your friend! The more you read, the more you can cross-reference! Even with the bevy of material to choose from, people typically agree on a fair amount of character staples (examples include: Dick Grayson being a very affectionate child, Jason Todd being a literature nerd, Bruce being emotionally-intelligent just...not necessarily acting on it lol) and often times the staples are the ones backed up by the canons.

(I'm not ashamed to admit that much of what's remained in my fickle memory can be attributed to character-realistic, memorable, thought-provoking fanfiction. Fanfiction exists for exploration and, I've found, can at times offer a more grounded, humane take on well-beloved characters that authors being Paid to write sometimes miss out on. Just - always doublecheck the tags and, when reading from authors that are heavily-biased, do your best to widen your exposure to the more objective, as well.)

They couldn't decide anything important with him around so they would have a fake meeting and then be like OKAY IT'S AUGUST WE'RE HOT AND TIRED, LET'S GO HOME, and then after he'd left they'd lock themselves in a room and have their REAL, TREASONOUS MEETING. Reading about this is objectively one of the funniest things I have ever heard. It's literally the beack house episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine where they have a fake party for Captain Holt.

Most certainly did not act alone. But I feel based on timeline of events and maps of the area that either he was paid off either by our own government or the Soviets, or one of the two set him up as a patsy. Then Jack Ruby was paid to cover up the tracks.

Same as killing anyone else, I guess, murder is bad, and I don't think that's really the route that should be taken to remove dangerous parties from power. But in some cases it may be the only way of removing them, and, well, that is what it is.

Always. It is constantly happening. There is nothing new.

I don't even know exactly when or how anymore. My mom's a book nerd and an archaeology/anthropology major, so I grew up in a house chock full of books, including history books. I've loved it ever since I could read, honestly.

I do not!

33: How did your favorite history teacher structure their class?

I was homeschooled so it was my mom. She made sure we covered every period, but other than that just let me pick out what interested me and what I wanted to read and explore. She read a ton of big historical books right alongside me and we'd discuss as we read. We still do this!

1. Favorite place to write? 

this is a lame boring answer but just my desk. i’m very comfortable at it as long as my dog isn’t asking to be in my lap bc then i can’t focus

3. Least favorite part of writing?

the writing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, but no probably writer’s block. like even when i’ve done other productive things i don’t feel productive unless i’ve written so i hate being writer’s block

4. Do you have writing habits or rituals? 

when i’m really really really stuck i’ll try to talk to my friend ash about the parts i’m most excited about to get myself pumped back up for it 

5. Books or authors that influenced your style the most?

i’m sure there are some bc i’m so easily influenced but i can’t pick them out necessarily. probably partly the song of achilles bc i loved that book so much and i loved the style but i can’t tell for sure

8. Favorite trope to write?

idk power couple? i love having natalia and rosie from my novel be equally badass together. also heterobaiting bc for a hot second i made it seem like it was gonna be natalia and their friend elias but haha nope. i don’t know tropes well enough to say for certain but these are some of the things i like about my own novel

10. Pick a writer to co-write a book with and tell us what you’d write about.

madeline miller and i are gonna write some more killer gay greek rewriters like a love story between icarus and apollo or some shit

12. How do you deal with self-doubts? 

i reread my favorite parts sometimes and i’m like wow,,,, goddamn,,, did i write that for real?? or i just say “fuck it fuck it FUCK IT i’ll rewrite it later” and try to power through 

15. Where does your inspiration come from?

it depends on what i’m writing. for things like fanfic it comes from the fact that i love hearing back from people like everybody does but genuinely i just love hearing that someone else’s day was made bc they read my work. i love hearing that they think i got the characterization of something right. it makes me so happy. for my novel i’m working on rn, it at first came from the fact that i love 3 things a lot: queer rep, magic, and knights. so i put all that in a book and rolled with it. now it’s because rosalind is my heart and soul and i love writing about her so much that i just wanna keep going

20. Post a snippet of a WIP you’re working on.

i already did this but fuck it i’ll do more of this one. i wanted to do a fic but i don’t have anything started on my fic sdjfsljdfl 

Rosalind woke up to Natalia crawling into her bed and planting herself on top of her legs, and then saying, “Rosieeeeeeeeeeee,” until Rosalind found the energy to swat at her. Her curtains were already drawn, and when she lifted her head to look around, she saw that breakfast was waiting for her at her table. She wondered where Jenna was and why she hadn’t woken her up. Natalia started her whining again, so she groaned and shoved her off of her legs. “Finally!”

“Where is Jenna?” she asked instead of answering Natalia’s impatience. “Why are you waking me up?”

“Why can’t I just wake up my best friend on this fine morning?” Natalia said, with no small amount of grandeur in a gesture toward the window. “The birds are singing, the sun is shining, there is a gentle breeze.”

She was holding her head up high like she knew what it was that she was doing out here, but really she was just desperate and scared. But the birds were singing, the sun was shining, and there was a gentle breeze. And above all else, Natalia was a spark of life all around her.

it really depends on the case but i share rough drafts sometimes

I can’t remember but I really fucking like “She had gone to everything that she had never thought of before except in passing, with a tightness in her chest and a voice screaming, Do not break this. Do not break something so priceless as us.”

well for my novel a spoiler is that rosalind defects from her country later on although no one but ash and sarah will get that

39. Do you base your characters off real people or not? 

I don’t think I do really. I might because I’m like that but I don’t notice it if I do

40. Original fiction or fanfiction, and why?

a month ago i would have only said original fiction but i’ve gotten back into fanfiction recently. both have their perks i mean original fiction is completely mine and i can do with it what i want without worrying about canon or aus or characterization and i can be proud of every single aspect since it’s all original, but fanfiction is a lot more interactive and gives validation a lot easier and quicker, which i like lol but also it’s easier to get around to people and i like to see how my writing affects other people so that’s important to me

42. How do you figure out your character’s looks, personality, etc?

looks: i base them off of real people sort of bc i fucking suck at appearances (rosalind looks like janelle monae). personality: i fucking wing it. i do a skeleton of the character and let them figure out who they are themselves as i write it

46. What would your story ____ look like as a tv show or movie?

my novel would be hella fucking cool, it would look probably a bit like merlin bc it’s a castle with magic but it would be very colorful and a lot more diverse and everything is very aesthetic hopefully and janelle monae herself is my girl rosalind,,,,,,,,,,,, in a perfect world at least

51. Describe the aesthetic of your story __ in five sentences.

my novel is: pink flowers. bright flames. the top of a castle against a cloudy sky. the way brown eyes look golden in the sunshine. a sword surrounded by vines. 

that sounds really fucking extra but that’s how i think of it at least. with emphasis on the pink flowers bc that’s for rosalind and she’s the mc 

54. Any writing advice?

love your main character. whatever you do, fall in love with them. that’s what’s gotten me through. also OUTLINE!!!! but even with an outline, if you don’t love your main character i don’t think you can keep going. if they’re not a good person, love the idea of them. love writing them. i wouldn’t be able to keep writing if i didn’t have all these emotions about rosalind. and know them. even i, who is the shittiest character builder in the world, have found that writing is so much easier when i can spend hours pacing up and down my room thinking about who rosalind is on the inside, and what she would be in modern times (she’d own a lesbian blog, 10% bc she likes lesbian positivity and 90% bc she likes to gush about natalia)

Hey these are some object ocs i have for a little show I’m thinking of! i have a lot so i will put some details about who they are under a read more!

ok so there are three photos here (as you can see) and i will start with the first (I’m sorry its so long)

Teams photo, blue team:                                                                                      this photo is also split into three parts so i will go one by one in this too

Sequin: sequin is a pretty arrogant character, who doesn’t actually do much for the team and rarely participates (before being nagged about it of course but even then not that much) he does have a friend (and alliance member) JoyBuzzer they both goof off together almost constantly. He thinks he is incredibly lovable and is flirty a lot of the time but never gets flirts, who knows how he would react to that ;) (me,i know,he gets flustered 9000)  and anyway all n all he's pretty oblivious about most things actually. ignorance is bliss i guess, he's also pretty narcissistic.

JB/JoyBuzzer: JB is a character who makes kinda dark humor/anti humor on the show (ex: why did Gram cracker fall of the swing? Cause she didn’t have any arms.) he’s also a pretty strong character I wouldn’t want to mess with. He is friends (and allies) with sequin and doesn’t really help him keep with the challenge as the two are usually off to talk about whatever. Sequin seems to be the character he cares most about and actually is a good pal to him, with other people however it’s a different story he sometimes will be at best apathetic about them/their feelings and at worst tease them (which is not the worst thing you could do but is still pretty bad) but sense sequin was able to get on his friend side it is not impossible to become friends with him. I would recommend staying on his good side if you can.

GC/Gram cracker/grammy(only if you’re a close friend): GC here is a quiet and pretty sensitive actually, she trys her hardest to be neutral to basically everything as to not have disagreements. will cry if you call her names. protect her. I’m considering having her be mute but I’m not really sure rn, even if she isn’t tho she doesn’t talk much regardless,she is also pretty indecisive, and probably wears flower crowns in secret.

Feather: feather is an interesting character (to myself at least, she was the first object oc i created after napkin) she is the most motivated of the characters to get the challenge done and done well. she might act bossy but she’s a real sweetheart 

BH/Bowler hat/hat/b-hat: he and cane went on to the show already knowing each other, but got chosen for opposite teams. his half of the opposing duo is a more practical half who originally wanted to be an author but was pulled into this by cane, tho he’s having a good time anyway! also they gay.

Cane: cane is the other half of the separated inseparable two he is more up in the clouds as they say, and has a more positive outlook then most in the cast actually whoops. he and b-hat treat the game more as a couples competition then a game show

Gum: gum is a more upbeat character but she still understands the goals of the challenge probably has the most friends tho, she more is the mom of the team then anything actually. she keeps sour candy in line most of the time and also is friends with radio she is more confused about why he has to be in his own team then mad about it tho, but she cant help because of the rules she tries to do it in a loop hole sort of way tho.

Key: key is actually based on a key i have in real life! He is a very soft spoken character who is never seen without his scarf which he does chew on sometimes (projecting onto my oc? What, Noooo) and is generally anxious but overall he’s kind of ignored by most of the team unless he is doing spectacularly or very poorly. PK seems to be the only one who recognizes him through the whole show, yet he still tries to help and wants to be more of a part of the group. he also really likes dinosaurs and dragons

PK/Plastic Knife: pk doesn’t really care much about the show but participates anyway, like almost complete apathy. participates i think out of a feeling of obligation. In like the middle of one of the episodes they get a dog because why not. you can’t tell them they can’t have a dog, well you can but they wont listen. what are you gonna do about it.

SC/Sour Candy: sour candy isn't really the friendliest of characters, he has a case of resting bich face. he can let very small things frustrate him and likes a challenge. the thing that motivates him most is spite, he thinks the blue team doesn't do enough for the challenge and complains about it constantly, most of his complaints are toward sequin and joy buzzer, because they don't even do anything their alliance is completely unproductive and not to mention two people is a little short for an alliance, they need somebody to help them become a functioning team! though he's a total hypocrite because he complains so much he doesn't do anything for the challenge either. gum normally is confused about why he even cares about the other team and they sometimes have arguments about why he does.

radio: radio is a dude who is pretty talkative, yet thats kind of hard to do when his own team consists of him and only him because tv doesn’t like him and he doesn’t even know why himself. is it unfair? yes. is it going to change? absolutely not. tho even still he’s pretty nice but hates tv because he placed him on his own team but he doesn’t even know why

TV, The host picture:                                                                                         next is the host tv, this picture is not split up in parts so you don’t need a more zoomed in photo of the picture right? if it would be better i could edit the post?

TV: TV is the host of this thing he does not stop smiling for any reason =) all n all he’s a good host to most on the show and is nice to all most everyone except radio who he hates, why he hates him i will keep a secret ;) not much is actually known about him personality wise tho.

Lazer: lazer is a sort of closed off character and well as kinda secretly wants to take over the world. but honestly i would let her??? does not like being called anything other then lazer (not later pointer, or LP, or something else just lazer) she sounds more dangerous that way. probably has a leather jacket somewhere she wears around when she’s alone to practice being tough  

DS/Dandelion Seed/Dandy: a super excitable character lol, very random XD  she also doesn’t have legs if you have noticed and just floats around, an oc that has ocs is probably featured in cringe comps but h8rs gonna h8. brings more light to the whole show actually.

Flag: honestly i haven’t thought about him much unfortunately, he’s basically a wannabe superhero and tries to be one but is not that good, also he can change what his flag is cause why not

Stool/PK’s dog: just PKs dog but idk if it should be a stool or an actual beagle cause it is in the object world. do dogs even exist? what do you guys think? 

also this will probably be in web-comic form if i do this at all because i don’t know how to animate. now i feel really great actually because I’ve been working mostly procrastinating on this for like months whoops sorry (but I’m also kinda nervous about how people will think of these ocs lol)
