a few of y’all have asked me about new life begins, and i’m procrastinating over work so............

BASICALLY this story revolves around the royal family of xinchuan (head of the nine states). xinchuan has a tradition wherein the other eight states send eligible women over to marry the xinchuan princes. the show opens with all these women coming into xinchuan for this selection

this is our main character li wei

bbg does Not want to be selected as a bride for any of the princes. she comes from jichuan (one of the least wealthy states, most of them are farmers) wherein people marry for love and men aren’t allowed to have concubines, she is Not Into this xinchuan polygamy bs, and is doing all she can to be sent back home asap so she can live her chill life

this is the sixth prince yin zheng, unloved (for now!) and mostly unnoticed (also for now!!) son of an unfavoured concubine. he’s introduced as being sickly and of little note in the political field. he mostly gets along with his brothers by virtue of having little interaction with them and keeping a real low profile

this boy is way smarter than he presents to outsiders!! he knows that the least favourable political marriage will be assigned to him, so he figures he might as well get ahead of it and voluntarily ask for the nominee from jichuan to be his wife

li wei ends up yin zheng’s concubine!!! which is the worst!!! not only does she have to conform to this xinchuan polygamy bs, she’s not even his main wife!!! she’s depressed for a few days until she catches wind that yin zheng only has a few weeks left to live (fake news) and it just kickstarts a whole bunch of hilarious shenanigans in which she tries to be nice to him before he dies and she gets to go home to jichuan as a widow

cue yin zheng (who doesn’t know what li wei is thinking) going: she’s??? nice to me???? mayhaps..........she be.........in love with me??????

ANYWAY y’all get the drift, it’s the whole arranged marriage, strangers to lovers, pining after my spouse vibe that i absolutely love!!! 

but it’s not just that!!! it’s also that the female characters are all well-written and the friendships between all of them are so cute!! 

first left is shangguan jing, fifth prince’s wife! she’s from danchuan which is a matriarchal society. she’s good at martial arts and very straightforward. does not really want to be married to xinchuan (much less to the fifth prince who starts off liking someone else), but is Doing Her Duty. i am SO INVESTED in her relationship with the fifth prince ahhhh, he’s a wimp (affectionate) who, this far in the show, has come to love his wife and is fretting constantly over how to make her happy/make her love him 

first right is hao jia! she’s the second prince’s concubine and li wei’s bff. she’s sweet and well-natured and essentially Good At Everything. the second prince is kind of a dick with obvious dv tendencies, but he’s the eldest son of the emperor’s wife and next in line for the throne. i am just HOPING we get to see hao jia go off on him one day soon 😭 (side note: i’m actually also curious about the second prince’s wife - i wonder if she and hao jia will team up to get rid of the second price ugh)

this is yuan ying junzhu, my li wei’s yin zheng’s wife. hoooo boy folks, when the emperor ordered yin zheng to marry her against his Very Strong Objection, i thought we were going to start in on the angst and the whole jealous wife arc, but!!! she’s got zero interest in him, and they decide that she’ll basically stay at the manor as his advisor/li wei’s tutor! she 100% likes li wei more than she likes yin zheng lbr

not pictured but also a+++ characters that i love: the third prince’s wife + his harem of concubines (he’s named them all after the 24 traditional solar terms); the seventh prince and his wife (both of whom are adorable and just try to stay low-key and out of trouble); song wu²; all the servants at the sixth prince’s manor

ANYWAY this show is light-hearted and fun and an absolute delight to watch!! it’s been awhile since we’ve had a romcom-ish cdrama that’s had actual budget to produce something to this quality 💖 11/10 would rec!!! 

where to watch: iqiyi // viki // youtube status:  this updates every sunday to wednesday (local chinese time), with 2 eps being released every day. 22/40 eps have aired so far, i think iqiyi subs are up to date with the current airing schedule but i can’t be sure? someone correct me if i’m wrong!

I was just thinking about the Sixth House and the Alexandrites and Nireids and I know that we all love the sixth and they're often painted as the harmless librarian house but it's specified that both of these groups get sent outside the nine houses. And apparently any child with a sixth parent is automatically taken by the house. So presumably the women, the Nireids in particular, are pretty much full on handmaids- their job is to basically be a broodmare for the state. And the men, presumably, are supposed to impregnate the colonized populations and then take the children. Which is uhhhh....not a good look and I have trouble believing that something with implications this obviously sinister won't have something to do with the story. A big deal is also made about the exact specifics of both Gideon and Harrow's respective conceptions and births. There are lots of hints about "the maternity issue" in Nona. Babies give off way more thanergy and John wears a crown of infant finger bones. Also, Palamedes tells Pyrrha that they don't do corvid carry on the sixth but if they're sending all their best people out to get pregnant that's obviously not true! Anastasia was specified to have been pregnant at one point. A lot of emphasis is placed on conception, birth, and babies and I'm sure it all has to come together somehow...spinning this around in the microwave of my brain.

im thinking maybe the Nireids and Alexandrites are out there grabbing "samples" of like, blood/ejaculate/other genetic material to mail back to the sixth to be vat-wombed.......? i usually focus on the humor of the way Camilla descried the Nireids, but you're right, the whole thing is deeply sinister.

also, the interesting thing is despite the Sixth house's almost single minded effort to increase the gene pool, it really doesn't seem to be working, which has implications wrt the extent of the Nine Houses' maternity issues overall. as in, it must be really fucking bad. like REALLY bad. in the Mysterious Study of Dr Sex, Cam notes that when the Nireids go out, "it's a massacre" (which.... in the context of the creche and Harrow's conception, oof), but where is the result of that?

like, the Nireids (and Alexandrites) are out there sucking and fucking 24/7 but back on the Sixth, Palamades only has 2 potential genetic options, and Cam has four. that does not speak to their genetic outreach program being at all successful, and it can't all be because the children were repatriated to the house of their other parent. my hypothesis is it might be a 10,000 year cumulative effect of living in a thalergetic system? but i'm not sure, because we havent fully explored the difference between thalergy planets (which we know will leave their inhabitants infertile, but on a way faster time scale!) and thalergetic planets like the Nine Houses.

Hey, can you re-imagine a wholy genderbent Deathnote, is too cursed?

Okay, it is SO funny that you mention this because I was talking to my Long-Distance Best Friend the other day about the fact that there is, apparently, (or at least was, at some point before the strike?) a plan to make a live-action TV series adaptation of this for Netflix. Which is...a whole other thing I don't want to get into, but ANYWAY.

The POINT is that we were talking about what would have to happen to make me have some modicum of hope that this might not be the worst idea ever (remember what happened the LAST time we did live-action Netflix DN, we got the 2017 movie no one needs to live through that again). And what I ultimately came up with was:

Every single character, except for Light and Raye, is now a woman. (Obviously this isn't wholly genderbent, but. It's close enough to this ask that I found it to still be a humorous coincidence.) I think in the hands of the right writer, it could be an interesting examination of misogyny and how baked-in that concept is to the justice system. (And I think it would lend extra context to the fact that Light was able to keep operating for so long. If the people opposing him are all women in a historically male-dominated field, they'd all have to contend with a type of professional and societal discrimination that he'll never have to, thus giving him an advantage. Also L would be a Weird Girl™, which would absolutely raise some interesting questions in terms of the scope of this character's influence and their societal perception. Also femslash Near/Mello would be canonically possible which is OBVIOUSLY the most important factor to take into consideration.)

Soichiro's difficulty in believing Light's guilt would gain an extra dimension if this character were also grappling with the societal expectations of motherhood (especially while being in a position of authority in a """masculine""" career). And Matsuda...I just think some woman, any woman, should get to shoot Light repeatedly in a fit of rage. (Also something-something calling women in the workplace idiots/making them the butt of the joke/consistently overlooking them, I think you could do something there.) I think this theoretical concept I spent way too much time thinking about really only works if, even though the major and supporting characters are women, it's still made clear that they work in an environment overwhelmingly occupied by men.

As for a FULLY genderbent story...Light as a female character is, to me, indeed an idea too cursed. I will not elaborate.

And I don't think the Shinigami experience the concept of gender in the way that we do, so tbh I'm not really sure a whole lot would change in that regard. But I do think a female Ryuk would be very funny.

Naomi being a man I think would be...not cursed, I just don't particularly enjoy it. But mainly that's because I am A Gay™, and I love thinking about women who are tough enough to have the word "massacre" as part of their nickname. :)

Misa being reimagined as a guy could be really interesting, though, given how a) the entertainment industry treats women differently from how it treats men, and b) the world at large generally expects men to react differently to trauma than women do. (Although I still very much prefer the version of Misa that serves as a deconstruction of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl). And I'd be curious to see what the viewer/reader response would be if this character were a man. (Mainly because, historically, audiences are a lot more positively receptive to extreme, unhealthy displays of devotion when they come from a male character than when they come from a female character, but this answer is already probably too long, so we don't have to talk about that.)

(Best Friend ALSO mentioned the idea of Rina Sawayama playing L, and I am now gay on a level I previously didn't ever think was possible, but we don't have to talk about that either.)

Uhhhh....TLDR, full-genderbent DN kind of cursed, but there are some really interesting ideas you could examine. (The one veto I'm gonna make is that I do not think this story works if Light is a girl, but-you guessed it-we really don't have to talk about that.)

Also, stan the stage musical for serotonin and clear skin!

An unpopular opinion: hey did you know basira hussain is in the third most episodes total and actually has the second most scenes with jon (she had The Most, period, before martin dethroned her in s5)? did you know? anyway she should be in more stuff and i love her deeply. i also don’t think she actually had double standards for jon versus daisy per se, i think her problem was thinking that guilty people deserve punishment and therefore that daisy’s victims (criminals) were fine while jon’s victims (random people off the street) were not

— this is also why she stops daisy from killing jon in 091, because she’d met him before, he was a human being who cracked jokes, he *couldn’t* be guilty; rather than because killing people is bad

— i also think she knew deep down she was wrong for this considering how she says in the unknowing: i don’t want to hurt you. i don’t want to hurt anyone. and then in s5: of course i care! …that’s the problem

— she had to force down her compassion in order to function well as a police officer and forced herself to believe that it was the right thing to arrest people who did bad things

— melanie was strong and violent and necessary and basira needed someone strong to rely on after daisy even though she could see how miserable melanie was. basira stuffed down all her emotions and became a stone figure and melanie feeling herself being overtaken by rage both aspired to that and hated her for it. they are anchors for each other but false because their usual anchors (daisy, georgie) aren’t here or wouldn’t get it. do you understand.

since we’re sort of on the topic: can you explain the whole hating band guys’ wives/gfs from fans and why it happens? i probably am thinking too much on this, but is it just because of teenagers’ fantasies wanting to be with their 30+ idol and that 00.1% of being with them dies with it if they have a partner and even kids? is it them trying to project their ships if they’re into rpf and them dating a girl kills their yaoi fantasies lol. not saying you have to 100% stan their partners or even like them like with what we see on the opposite end of the scales with fan accounts dedicated to wives which is uhhhh but some ladies who do nothing but exist get ruthlessly talked to shreds and their husbands put on pedestals

Yeah I think it's a lot of factors including the ones you listed. I've been a band girl stannie for over 10 years and I feel like I've seen things come full circle from vitriolic hatred to intense stanning to vitriolic hatred of all women. People do stuff like censor Lynz in photos of her and Gerard because she's "problematic," which is very 2009 Livejournal behavior and something Gerard is very strongly against.

Like twenty people are going to unfollow me and I'm going to get 200 angry anons but the line in Foundations of Decay "He gets to die a saint but she will always be a whore" is very clearly referencing gendered double standards. However, no one in the fanbase interprets it this way because acknowledging Gerard even has a wife and has opinions about women deeper than "Don't show your tits to get backstage" would shatter everyones brains and ruin their perception of Gerard as this gay trans icon that is so gay he doesn't get anywhere near icky problematic women. So their fans keep censoring their wife in photos and censoring captions acknowledging they're a couple because she's so horrible you can't even look at her.

Obviously Gerard uses they/them pronouns in addition to he/him and has spoken out about their feelings about gender identity and those intetpretations of his lyrics are important to acknowledge too but that line is pretty obviously talking about gendered double standards.

Obviously Lynz has done some things that really aren't cool, but her chief actual sins seem to be art theft, racism, and being friends with Jimmy Urine, which are all things Gerard has been at least of accused of too-- he was collaborating with Jimmy Urine as recently as 2020 and Jimmy Urine was in the Danger Days music videos but everyone just closes their eyes and points at Lynz.

But anyway, I think some of it is sexual jealousy and some of it is frustration that acknowledging they're into girls too means not every FOB song is about Mikey, maybe 1 or 2 are about his actual former wife. But I also think some of it is misplaced anger and frustration that no matter how smart you are or how good of a musician or artist you are or how successful of a career you have or whatever as a woman, male celebrities are almost always going to go for an influencer or model that's probably 10-15 years younger and wants to have six kids starting at age 22, and even if they want to make music with a girl they'll still pick a 19 year old ten years younger they can easily take advantage of or mistreat, like CS with Victoria and Black Cards with Bebe Rexha. And it can be easy to resent people who happen to be that pretty and happen to get lucky and be in the right place at the right time when they're very, very young and be born rich.

Also like sometimes band wives do really shitty things-- I believe Sarah Urie told an extremely racist joke while Brendon was on livestream. Mike Dirnt's wife is an antivaxxer and a vitriolic transphobe and BJA's wife participated in cyberbullying a teenager her son sexually abused And it sounds like Olivia Wilde prioritized her desire for Shia LaBeouf to be in Don't Worry Darling over Florence Pugh's safety and comfort. But before that ever came out people were calling Olivia Wilde an ugly pedophile because she was dating a 28 year old man-- famous guys date much younger than that all the time and no one ever blinks. But like Meagan doesn't do anything and has no online presence and people just fucking hate her because she's a lady that exists.

I don't really know where I'm going with this but people just hate women so much it is insane-- people get worked up over acknowledging Victoria existed in Cobra at all when Gabe made the same types of offensive jokes she did constantly and he was actually accused of emotional abuse by a female ex band member. Everyone just closes their eyes and points at Victoria.

It's so bad that a lot of band guys tend to be more feminist in this regard than their mostly female base as a whole even though theyre all like shitty and support Johnny Depp lol

Nekozaki is ✨gay✨ and also best girl - a compilation of evidence

KOkay, hear me out. This girl has been my new favorite character recently. I love Shikimori-san not necessarily because of the main couple (they’re cute, but ehhh, I don’t really care for romance). Nekozaki instantly caught my eye while reading the manga - I started with the manga before I watched the anime. Anyway, she just gives off gay vibes. Why? 

Example 1: Ideal Woman

This girl has an “ideal woman”. Okay, it seems like a lot of people seem to have a different opinion this scene, and I honestly thought the same until I re-read it. (Correct me if I’m wrong of course please). Most people say she’s just admiring Shikimori for being the perfect elegant girly-girl, and that she wants to be like her. This is a really common trope that I’ve seen a million times in manga/anime - a tomboy girl shows excessive admiration towards a more feminine girl, which sometimes comes off as sapphic vibes. However, read the first panel on the bottom row. She is happy the way she is. She is comfortable in her own skin. She doesn’t intend to change herself to act or look like Shikimori at all. Instead, she seems to be attracted to girls who contrast her. Also in general, watching your classmate walk down the hallway and telling your friend you think she is super cute is kinda gay. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Example 2: Mother

This is less of an example, but I still thought it was relevant. Neko clearly likes Micchon’s mom as much as she likes her daughter. She just keeps gushing about her, with hearts around her head (and in her eyes, when the mom actually comes out to greet them.)

Example 3 - Cool women

Neko clearly seems to have a thing for cool women, despite her profession of loving cute girls. Her reaction to Isana at the coffee shop. 

Example 4 - Hachimatsu (Too many moments to even compile)

 I am inclined to believe that Hachimatsu and Nekozaki are conjoined at the hip. In the manga, it is extremely rare to see them apart. Although I don’t personally don’t ship them, I think there’s more than enough reason that someone could. More so than with any other male character in the series (though granted, there’s only two of them LOL. NGL, we need more male characters in Shikimori... uhhhh, that sounded better in my my head.). 

Example 5 - Kamiya 

Despite being a lone wolf, Neko is always reaching out to her, trying to hang out, trying to see the best side of her. Despite Kamiya brushing her off so many times, Neko keeps trying. Most people would give up. And they eventually become friends. I think it’s a really sweet part of the story. Although it might not indicate gayness, Nekozaki is one of the genuinely sweetest characters I’ve seen in a manga in a long time. We need more friends like her. 

Evidence 6 - Wake up

Pretty self-explanatory. Hachimitsu knows exactly what can fluster Nekozaki the most. She looks like she just had an eargasm, LOL (which she probably did). As a note, I read that “little kitten” or “koneko” is a terminology used by lesbians in Tokyo towards their (usually younger) admirers. Sort of like a princely or suave phrase. Could just be coincidental considering Nekozaki’s name, but seems a bit intentional. 

Yeah, that’s my evidence. It’s not rock solid or anything, and if anyone finds a hole in my logic, then please share. But the way she’s coded makes me think she’s attracted to women. And if it’s played right, she would actually be a refreshing breath of air compared to characters playing a similar role in other slice of life manga/anime (Horimiya’s Sawada, Komi’s Ren, Scum’s Wish’s Sanae). I just hope she gets to be happy later on, instead of being the “gay but always single” friend that every show seems to have. Like I legitimately hope the author lets her get a partner.

I have. Too many of these. I'll talk about two though!

I am writing a sequel to sunday best thanks to some gentle encouragement (/pos) that involves Melissa and Barbara making out in a confessional and cookies. The pieces are there but I am still slotting them together.

I also REALLY want to write a fucked up BayoJeanne thing where Bayonetta gets a hold of both Eyes of the World, becomes her own god, and traps Jeanne in a time loop of sorts so she never stays dead. Very angsty, psychological horrors elements.....it is coming together in the soup of my brain slowly but surely.

i feel like a lot of people here are in denial that JPL could fuck up so bad in season 2 because season 1 was so perfect but the reality is that this season is a mess, poorly written and its like i am watching a different series, and its hardly gonna get better cause there are only 2 episodes left after all

i am not trying to be a bitch about this i just feel like people are being too forgiving, which is common since lesbians and queer women rarely get fair and/or good representation, but i think we are way past that and they have given us enough evidence that they are not going to go the way we hoped they would, not even close

I both agree with you and understand where people are coming from when they want to give them the benefit of the doubt. I mean, it was fucking perfect, right???

I have to say that there have been more things this season that I've hated, than things I've loved. And that's very sad considering that last season every time I watched a new episode, I could not believe what an incredibly put together show I was watching.

I think it's fine that people want to believe in JPL and that there's a purpose for everything, but I also believe that people who are angry with them for certain things, are allowed to be angry or upset because...you can't deny that the quality of the show is uhhhh different lol. It's miles below the first season and I don't think that's unfair to say. I think the build-up of last season has been brushed off too easily, and that the whole thing with the email was dealt with very sloppily. I think the comedy isn't as thought out and that they have employed some played out gimmicky shit straight out of 90's sitcoms.

If I were to recommend this show to someone who's never seen it, I'd tell them to watch season one as if every little thing has a purpose and as if it all relates to really satisfying character development. And I'd tell them to watch season 2 with little investment in anything, like a sitcom where nothing that happens actually matters or has consequences. And that's fucked up lol

I don't even think, for myself anyway, it's about denial, but just like...clinging to the good parts because it just was SO. GOOD. you know? And there's traces of that still but I do agree that we shouldn't be waiting for the next episode to make sense, after literally every episode. I don't want to watch this show for cheap laughs. And that's what this season has felt like for the most part unfortunately.

The good things have been amazing, but I miss loving 95% of Hacks as opposed to like 30% now.

Events from my dream in whatever order I remember them (not even remotely chronological order)

this is definitely because in the Arthurian legend I was reading last night King Arthur is attacking Rome.

"I (not me)" signifies that I was in the shoes of a character and didn't actually have control over the events, as opposed to when I'm lucid dreaming and do and say whatever I want. I am in no way a princess lol.

There had apparently been some TV show about ancient Rome that lasted for 30 seasons, then later had a spinoff that lasted for 16. Everyone hated fans of the show because it was every kind of bigotry under the sun. Fans of the show were rioting that the spinoff had ended.

A bunch of Actual Roman Soldiers had raided a castle and were trying to enslave everyone. A bunch of women had been locked up near the armory and escaped and armed themselves and started attacking the soldiers.

I (not me) was a noble lady of that castle and had a giant wolf for a mount rather than a horse, and so did some guy who might have been a dragon? it wasn't clear. We got on our wolves, who we had soul bonds with, and ran out of the castle by jumping off the roof (the wolves were magical and didn't take falling damage I guess) and ran to get help from some tiny people who lived in the forest nearby. On the way there me and the guy got separated somehow. possibly he died. IDK. Anyways he was supposed to be there to greet the tiny people as "the War King".

So when I (not me) got there wearing the same kind of armour they thought I (not me) was him and were like "War King!!!! You're back!!! How's it been!!! Long time no see!!!!!" and I (not me) had to be like, "Well....uh,,,,, War Princess is a bit closer...." and took off my helmet and explained the situation. They decided they would help even thought I (not me) wasn't the friend they'd been expecting.

On the way there while riding the wolf mount I kept almost flying off because the saddle wasn't very well built and every time he jumped it was like a roller coaster. He definitely had a name but I don't remember it. He was very pretty. Definitely more dog coat colors than wolf. Dragon-guy's wolf was black with silver speckles. I don't remember either of their names either.

The only person whose name I remember was Cinderella, who was also called Sentinel and Segregation. She had been captured by, and I'm not joking, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and they had been using her to brainwash people into Voting Blue No Matter Who.

I (not me) the knight princess rescued her and blew up a whole bunch of evil robots and cars by throwing a crap ton of mines because the world suddenly had Fallout 4 mechanics.

Then Cinderella / Sentinel (who was only called Segregation when brainwashed as a code name so no one would realize she was a person) turned into a Barbie doll for some reason. Dragon-guy and his wolf came back from wherever they'd disappeared to and turned out to be my (not me)'s father? adoptive father maybe? Again, not sure.

The Woman King – Movie Review (Spoiler Free)

See this is why I really should watch trailers.

I went into this one completely blind. Based off the title and photo on fandango I had very rough idea about what this movie was about – Viola Davis being a badass warrior in Africa. That’s all I knew. Honestly I wasn’t even planning on going to see this one because going to see “black” movies in theaters is sometimes a trying experience because all the other trailers before the movie are usually “black” movies as well and it just feels like I’m being pandered and condescended to. Its like they’re like “oh a only a black person would go to see this so here black person, look at all the other trailers with black people because that’s all you watch” .  I think its also really telling that someone who goes to the movies as much as I do /sees a lot of trailers, managed to not see A single trailer for this in the past few months. Why is that? (why am I asking questions I already know the answers to). So after hearing it was getting really great reviews and got A+ cinema score, I had little gang of guilt for not supporting the movie , so finally made it to the theatre last Sunday afternoon for matinée with my dad and stepmom (side note - there were 4 other people in the theater with us , 2 pairs of white women, and one pair left about ½ way into the movie ,the other ¾ way into the movie. That to me was, uhhhh…. Interesting…….

Anyway  mini rant aside, to my initial point about why I should watch trailers more – I was so unprepared for what this movie is – a war movie about the slave trade. War movies are violent, and slavery depictions are traumatic, so I wasn’t emotionally prepared for what I saw. This movie is violet, and emotional and if you’re not in the headspace for that then protect your peace.

All that aside, I was blown away by Viola Davis’ performance. I know, newsflash , Viola Davis is an incredible actress ,but I’ve never seen her in a physical role like this and my god was she commanding. She’s an absolute badass in this and I totally bought that she was the baddest bitch of them all and she could rip her enemies heads off is she needed to. But beyond the pysicallity, it was the emotion she brought to this character that really got me. There is no ugly snot cry moment like in Doubt, but there is one scene near the end of the film that left me in tears – her ability to get you to feel the emotions her characters are experiencing is unmatched.

I know there is a lot of controversy about the plot not being historically accurate, but I’m glad this film was made and I’ve heard there is a great article in the NYtimes that digs into that, but honestly I don’t really feel like digging more into more historical takes on slavery.

Overall – if you’re in the headspace for it , want to see some bad ass women kicking ass, gorgeous costumes and great performances sprinkled with a little war and trauma, this is right up your alley. 7/10
