i will jot it down here so as to not forgot my adventure of today. went to pick up omd at his house in palo alto to go to pincushion. drove up playing cumbias & the drive to pincushion was so scenic i almost pulled over & told him to drive bc i wanted to just enjoy the view. but anyways once we made it to the cattle chute, he showed me a little tunnel where there’s a bunch of graffiti & there we found a dead cow. he said that isn’t the first time he’s seen that & that it’s quite sad the cows go there to die. so he reached out his hand to help me back up & we went through the regular trail. there was a random pair of jeans left at the entrance. there was a lot of incline. thankfully there were some spots where it was flat for like 20 ft so i would stop there & take pictures as an excuse to catch a break but omd told me i handled the incline well. i asked him if he knew any jokes so he tried to think of dad jokes but the only one he knew was smth like “why was the pterodactyl quiet when he went to the bathroom,” & i said smth bc of the P & he’s like yeah the P[ee] is silent. at the top, there were 3 women w a speaker blasting music. i was kinda upset at that. i just wanted peace & quiet at the top. so i hurried up to get to the highest point where they weren’t. omd stopped to talk to them so i was alone for a bit at the top js sitting there. then he came up & we just hung out for maybe 10 minutes but the little bugs kept flying at me so i got up & he took that as his cue to get going too. so we took down a different trail so we could do a loop. i wish i could remember the turns we made but all i remember is a right after the pincushion peak. he was telling me about how i gotta make college friends bc those are the people that will be good to have around 30 years from now. then we talked about the 1800s & videogames & mexican culture. i was skipping & jumping about when we were going downhill, uphill, & on flat land. i was having so much fun hiking! ok then we made it back to the car & dude told me about pizza factory & i was like ok so we went down there. omd said we could split a sandwich & he’d pay for it but in my mind i was like nah i need more than half a sandwich so the only logical thing to do was tell him “nah i got us this time” bc he had paid last time & i secretly had the plan to order myself a whole sandwhich. so then he just paid for his beer & he got a salad which i noticed was cheaper than the sandwhich so i wonder if he got that bc it was cheaper but anyways. then we were outside & that’s when he started talking about religion & politics & eugenics & DNA & yellowjackets & so much other stuff. he also asked if i knew something about DNA (the topic escapes me now) but at the time i did so i said yes & he’s like yeah you went to edison you’re a smart girl LIKE PEOPLE THINK THAT JUST BC I WENT TO EDISON IM SMART NO YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THAT I SUCK AS A STUDENT but thank you for thinking so highly of me. then on the drive back we listened to doors & he was asking about my music choices & that’s when i showed him that i put his playlist on spotify. the whole ride back he talked about music. then we arrive to his house & invited me in & i step into some sort of office that is not an office actually but a room full of antique stuff. & the living room & entrance were the same way. but he was so excited to show me everything & i noticed that. he showed me some art he made w sticks & branches he found. he polished & glued rocks on top of them. thinking back about it now it reminds me of ben making his stop motion animation film from parks&rec. oh & i met seth & he’s jokingly telling me to buy omd’s stuff bc he has so much stuff & wants it gone & he’s like [omd] likes you he can give you a discount & i was like oh my goodness ive been accepted as a person 😭. & when omd had introduced me to seth he said it like he had already talked about me to seth so PEOPLE ARE PERCEIVING ME NOOO. dude has a huge house. an office, 4 bedrooms, kitchen, living room, laundry room, 2 bathrooms, & a big ass backyard W A POOL & JACUZZI

Umm hi 👉👈 I realized that most of the asks you guys get are about games and rec lists. You guys deserve so much recognition for the work you put in this blog, so I wanted to ask if I can do a little get-to-know-the-mods thing? If that's okay!
1. Besides writing, what are your hobbies?
2. Do you have a niche interest right now?
3. Any fave songs/artists/bands?
4. Any fave movies/tv shows?
5. On a scale of 1-10, how likely would you survive in your wip's world?
You can totally ignore this if you guys want, no pressure. Anyway, much love to all the interact-if mods! You guys are incredible! ❤
We saw this ask and we went 👀 👀 👀 so we’re happy to answer! Thank you so much for the fun ask!
We also rated our survivability in all of our collective games, since Mars isn't an author! Fun stuff! Spoilers, though: it’s really not looking so great for me (Dani) but that’s fine!!!  😌
Tumblr media
1. I’m a photographer as well as a graphic artist (but not like. A painter/drawer kind of artist!) and, on a general level, a maker and a tinkerer!
2. Fountain pens! I only write with ink, and only with fountain pens, and I use bottled inks/converters!
3. I’m pretty eclectic with music, but my top genres are alt rock, indie, indie pop, etc, as well as top 40s and some rap.
4. I feel like this is the hardest one for me to answer? Favorite movies/shows? Avatar: the Last Airbender has been a favorite show of mine since I was a little kid, but I have a harder time thinking of shows I would call a favorite in recent years. There are shows I’ve liked, and a lot of shows I’ve watched. But I’m picky! And demanding! It takes a lot to earn a place in Dani’s Trophy Case of Favorites. 😌 I would say I quite liked A Quite Place (movie), and I liked Us (movie). When it comes to TV shows, I have a hard time being pleased with them if they don’t end well. As a result, I have a penchant for a good limited series/miniseries (because they’re stories that have an end in mind and the plot reflects that, dagnabbit).
5. Heh. Okay.
In The Goodfellows? I think I stand I chance. I can exercise my sparkling wit and lovable personality to the best effect. I’m gonna give myself an 8/10 survivability rating. Even if I don’t have the right skills, I can go crying to the person who does and they’ll save me. Maybe.
In Creatures’ Cradle? I’m super $**!%d. 😌 1/10 survivability rating. And that 1 is me being nice to myself. The day the apocalypse breaks out I would probably be patient 0. I am self-aware. I would not do well in an apocalypse. Zombies care not for aforementioned sparkling wit and lovable personality, and I have all the muscle of a boiled spaghetti noodle. So it’s a no go.
Greater Than Gods (Cruz): Well. I’m going to be optimistic. And say that I have the wisdom not to do things I shouldn’t do and not to rock boats I shouldn’t rock. I’m going to give myself a 7/10 based on insider information, but also based on reckless optimism!
Vardir (Cruz): Cruz says this is a lighthearted game, so 10/10 LOL.
When it Hungers (Roast): I’m giving myself a nice, mediocre 5/10. I think I could put my mind to work here; I joke that I’m the village idiot, but I’m actually pretty smart! Unfortunately, I’m also curious, and maybe a little bad with authorities who won’t answer my questions. So I knocked off a lot of points due to the fact that I’d probably poke the metaphorical bear. So it’s a real coin flip as to whether I’d really make it or not.
Orthall Bay (Nines): Considering the genre is “horror” and the game intro includes the words “monster” and “maim,” I’m giving myself a whooping, enthusiastic 3/10. Yes, folks, I am that confident in myself! Once again, I can’t charm the socks off a monster (or can I?), so one of my greatest weapons is snatched from beneath my feet. Alas!
Tumblr media
1. Beloved I’m a college student in the middle of a pandemic... i can hardly even write LOL i do draw at times which u can see in my personal blog (nothing too good really) and i used to do karate before things went to shit <3
2. Nothing niche I believe? All I do is leave Netflix as bg noise every day n play popular videgames (genshin)
3. Porter Robinson <3 I love Bea Miller a lot as well but lately I’ve been feeling Porter a lot
4. The Good Place <3
5. My WIPs:
Greater than Gods: Highly situational, the world GtG is set in is as broad as the real world LOL so I don’t have an universal answer. But keeping it vague, and knowing my own personality, I feel like 5/10. depends on my luck.
Vardir: 10/10 no one dies in Vikgade, unless you’re a hunter but I wouldn’t be a hunter <3
Others’ WIPs
I'm gonna give myself a solid 5/10 in all other WIPs because y'all aren't writing lighthearted stories either. I feel like as long as I avoid the role of the MC I will be mostly fine. I hope. But as Dani said I'm also prone to fight the wrong person and dig my own grave so 😌
Tumblr media
1. Well, writing is a very, very, very, distant hobby since Words Hard, but I like to crochet and sculpt a little! Anything to do with fiddling with my hands and I’m good to go. And like, debatable but graphic design is my passion [insert clown emoji here since Tumblr said No]
2. Oh yeah a bunch! DnD yelling at people, thinking of arson, crocheting, rock climbing and simply vibing. I got into podcasts a few years ago and I’m always looking for more recs, so if you have some, hmu 😤
3. Pls,,,,my music taste is,,,so weird do not let me expose myself with lack of consistency but uhh. Current songs that are stuck in my head include; Cult of Dionysus , Achilles Come Down and The Last Shanty
4. If you’ve ever spoken to me before, I probably yelled about Pacific Rim to you or at you. Plus I love all The Mummy films and really enjoyed Castlevania (s3 excluded, we do not perceive that) as well!
5. Ah, mod survival simulator pt. 3
Alright, let’s go!  I don’t have a WIP because again, words hard, but like, considering how feral I am when not tryna seem professional hm...
The Goodfellows: I wanna say a solid 7/10 because I’d hardcore vibe with the Traveler and probably instigate so much nonsense. I can also bribe with blueberry cake so maybe.
Creature’s Cradle: maybe a 4/10 and only because of pure spite keeping me alive long enough to smack someone. I’ve prepared for hypothetical  zombie apolcapyses and I won’t hesitate to bap, but will be bapped back because I’m weak as hell.
Greater Than Gods: a toss up between 2/10 and 7/10! I can vibe and be chill but I also have terrible impulse control so...
Vardir: hm....I think pretty good survival rates all around? If you ask me to fight then like, okay sure, your knees are mine. So maybe a 8/10?
When it Hungers: .......8/10 just because I’d refuse to die if I can be a cool creature. Living for the aesthetic can and will drag me outta hell. But I’m also clumsy as hell so I’d probably crash as a porcelain or hold a rooster and perish (aka, real rating is a good 3/10)
Orthall Bay: 2/10, nope. Nope I’d be taken out in a heartbeat. Monsters can go pspsps and I’d head straight into the dark creepy forest like a fool if someone comes @ me. Half the time I’ll just assume it’s sfx makeup and vibe until it’s too late.
god, never put me in a universe where I cannot squawk like a bird and throw pebbles from a window. Oof
Tumblr media
Anon, you're so sweet! I give you a forehead smoomch <333 As for your questions...
1. If I'm not writing, I'm usually watching video essays on Youtube. My go-to channels as of right now is Disrupt and Aperture! I just really like their videos. Aside from that, I recently got into podcasts. Currently going through Hello From The Hallowoods and Shelter and Warning, which are made by queer creators!
2. Oh oof, there's quite a bit so I'm just gonna put down one thing. For some reason, I really got into collecting tiny astronaut things? I recently bought this astronaut desk light, and I've got a package coming in for the miniatures I ordered. No purpose for them other than I think they're neat <3
3. I'm a bit private with my music taste (even tho I have Spotify connected on Discord lmao), but there's 5 songs that I'm currently obsessed with. I keep replaying them over and over again. Just squeezing all the serotonin I could get outta them.
4. I can't really say I have a fave TV show or movie because I can't really just pick one, but my current fave is 9-1-1 and Resident Alien. 9-1-1 because I just really love the found-family dynamics and how the show tackles sensitive topics, and Resident Alien because it's lighthearted comedy. My all-time fave movie is Flipped! I have the book too and I like rereading from time to time <3
5. You're in for a doozy, anon, because we're rating each other's games <333
The Goodfellows: 7/10
Listen. Shenanigans with the Traveler. I would get up to so many of them and that is what'll get me possibly bodied, not the actual environment itself <3
Greater than Gods: 7/10
I like to think I have enough common sense to uhhh not recklessly flip stones that should not be flipped <3 I'm a cautious and skeptic person irl so I think I'll hold up well? Then again, it's a vast environment change and while I can adapt pretty quick, I wouldn't like the lack of control in the unknown.
Vardir: 10/10
Going off what Cruz said, Vardir is lighthearted and focused on personal growth so I think I'll be okay! Self-growth here I come, babey!
Creatures' Cradle: 8/10
Maybe I'm overestimating myself, but I think I'll be able to survive in a supernatural post-apocalyptic world! Ah, but it depends on the motivation though. I like the idea of rebuilding communities and eventually societies, but the survival turmoil would be a constant battle I'd have to overcome. If we're talking survival itself though, I think I'll do well.
When it Hungers: 8/10
That's probably my wishful thinking but I think I'll be fine. Maybe. Possibly. Don't like the idea of being regulated by an organization so if I was a non-human creature that could pose a problem but I can roll with it <3
Orthall Bay: 6/10
Assuming I'm not playing as MC, my chances of survival uhhh changes quite drastically. Not enough to guarantee an untimely demise, but certainly enough that it would constantly keep me on my toes. I think that's the safest answer I can get without spoiling anything lmao
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for asking! It's super sweet of you <3
1. Too many :'D I knit, I sew, I do carpentry (well, learning), I bake, I'm hammering away at HTML and CSS, my job kind of encourages learning new things and I take that to picking up new hobbies!
2. My time is kind of consumed with school work and work work and WIP work so not a lot of time to pursue niche interests right now. I've been watching a lot of horror game playthroughs, true crime youtubers, and an adorable show on Netflix called the Repair Shop <3
3. My taste in music is "what am I vibing with atm?" I've been listening to a lot of 80's music atm (don't @ me), but also Lo Fang and Kaleo, and whatever spotify recommends me on my discover weekly which is usually complete chaos.
4. I love the Mummy even though it hasn't aged 100% well (I'm a librarian, of course it's one of my gotos LOL), Legally Blonde, Leverage, Jumanji (the original), I'm....very bad at having recent tastes... and very bad at remembering my favorites when asked.
Tumblr media
5.
The Goodfellows: I'm a creature of comfort, 5/10 if I can just luxuriate in town and not actually interact with the story sfjkdbsdkf
Creature’s Cradle: I'd like to think I have a 50/50 shot XD 5/10, I want to think I'd be decent at a zombie apocalypse but ultimately would suffer an early fate.
Greater Than Gods: 10/10 if I'm just vibing, less so if I'm involved in the actual story XD
Vardir: I'd still suffer without technology but I can also knit for a living in this world so I'm down 8/10
When it Hungers: I feel like I could vibe here, there's tech if dated, hot showers, telephones are around by now... might still get bored. 7/10 though it'd be cool to be another creature....I should make a 'what creature of snv are you' quiz!
Orthall Bay: 7/10 idk I feel like after the first monster of the week I'd just skip town XDDDD I'm the worst protagonist, I see danger I just leave.

Ive never really understood the hype surrounding Taylor Swift - I mean, I like some of her songs, but im not big on modern pop music so generally she just doesn’t really click for me. But I find it interesting that theres quite a few of Beatles/Swift blogs - like, they should have very little in common given that they’re from completely different eras and all, but somehow people seem to find a lot of semblance between the two. << and thats not me shitting on any of these blogs btw! Hope I don’t come off as rude or condescending there <3
Anyway, I was just wondering what got you into Taylor Swift? (I think ive read your post on how you got into the Beatles)
Hi, anon! Don't worry, I don't think you're rude or condescending! I agree they don't have too much in common and I don't really like their music for the same reasons.* I do have a playlist of Paul songs that have similar vibes to Taylor songs but it's mostly lyric-based. (Also the Beatles For Sale songs actually have quite the Taylor-tinge because Paul and John were not immune to Country Music)
I saw @stewy say once that a possible reason there are a good handful of us Swiftie-Beatle People on here is the appeal of a vast discography, which I agree with. If you have an artist/group with 200ish songs, it's just really fun to really dive into their work and explore all the facets. I also think: we're talking about the most popular band of all time and one of the highest-selling artists of the 21st century. They have a lot of fans so there's bound to be overlap, regardless of musical differences.
Moving on to your question: Getting into Taylor was an extremely personal experience for me and so my explanation is probably going to be kind of long so I'll put it under a read more.
It was spring-summer 2014, I was 15. I had heard the more popular songs of hers starting with Love Story and enjoyed pretty much all of them (I always found her hopelessly romantic point of view fascinating) but before I got a Spotify account in 2013 it was difficult in general for me to really get into an artists' entire discography so most of her songs had flown under my radar.
At the time, I was in this very weird sort of codependent online friendship with this girl who was basically my first real best friend and my first more or less crush. She was very depressed and I was very much in an I Could Fix Her™ mood, except that I obviously couldn't fix her and it made me feel like I wasn't enough and she had begun pulling more and more away from me and not replying to my messages and it was simply driving me insane. I consider it the saddest period in my life.
at some point during this period, I started trying to connect with other people (all online, I didn't know how to talk seriously to anyone IRL) and explaining the issues I'd been having, and one of the people who brought me joy and whom I actually felt not drained talking to was a huge swiftie. And IDK the fact that she loved Taylor and the fact that talking to her made my life better (and also the fact that I liked all the Taylor songs I knew at that point) just made me decide to give her a listen. And I think that whole "large discography discovery" phenomenon really helped me at the time (funny, because her discography has doubled since then). It gave me something new to focus on; there were just so many songs to discover, all telling such rich stories. I also have always loved bridges, they are almost always my favourite part of a song. And Taylor, god-bless her, loves them too and always puts her ALL in them. Like pretty much every bridge of hers brings the song to the next level, and even a lot of her songs I don't adore tend to have great bridges (Stay Stay Stay and Paper Rings come to mind). I think one of her most underrated qualities is how good she is at song structure and really building up an entire musical journey with a song. She also almost always adds cool ad-libs in her second and third choruses to keep the songs interesting and dynamic (or at least since she's gone pop). Anyways, back to the story: Then Taylor announced 1989 as her next album and released Shake It Off, and it was just like this great happy thing for me to look forward to, when I had very little keeping me going. The era was promoting a lot of happiness which in hindsight was slightly fabricated and it was just a really great thing for me to latch onto.
At the same time I was coming to realize that I was gonna have to pull away completely from my friend and all those break-up songs just… Hit, y'know? Like, some people seem to think Taylor's a one-trick pony because she likes to write break-up songs but to me, break-ups are just like this moment where you as a human can potentially feel every single emotion, and Taylor's songs have covered every facet of the concept. Here are some songs I remember from that period, that all meant a lot to me at the time because they explained my own pain to me so well:
Haunted, for the absolute terror you feel in the first moments you realize someone is probably gonna leave you. Come on, come on / Don't leave me like this / I thought I had you figured out / Something's gone terribly wrong / You're all I wanted.
I Almost Do, for the inner turmoil you feel when you know you have to stay away from someone for your own good but you really, really have to resist just running back to that person. We've made quite a mess, Babe / It's probably better off this way / And I confess, Babe / In my dreams you're touching my face / And asking me if I wanna try again / With you / And I almost do.
Last Kiss, for that absolute sadness that comes simply with remembering everything that was good and not comprehending how it could've possibly ended. I still remember / The look on your face / Lit through the darkness / At 1:58 / Words that you whispered / For just us to know / You told me you loved me / So why did you go / Away?
Forever and Always, for that feeling of desperately wanting to hold on to what you still have but at the same time realizing it probably isn't going to last and having no idea how to fix it, plus feeling like the other person doesn't even care. So here's to everything / Coming down to nothing / Here's to silence / That cuts me to the core / Where is this going? / Thought I knew for a minute / But I don't anymore.
Dear John, my all-time favourite song, for that moment you find clarity and realize that you deserved better and that you were headed in an extremely dark direction because of this other person. [DISCLAIMER: my friend did NOT abuse me nor did we have some inappropriate age difference. But the way she would ignore me and her general moodiness really affected my own mental health and self-worth problems] You paint me a blue sky / And go back and turn it to rain / And I lived in your chess games / But you changed the rules every day / Wondering which version of you I might get on the phone / Tonight / Well I stopped picking up / And this song is to let you know why.
(She's covered more aspects of break-ups in other songs [cheating, divorce, feeling awkward around your ex amongst others], these are just the ones I remember being really important to me when I was first getting into her)
She really helped me feel a lot less alone during one of my loneliest periods and I really can't thank her enough for that. Soon after this, I started crushing on a girl in my class and Taylor's love songs started to take on a new meaning for me as well.
What's crazy to me is, when she went on hiatus for a few years, a part of me thought maybe I'd grown out of her and no longer had much in common with her, but when reputation came out I was pulled right back into my love for her as a person and musician and then when Lover came out I found that she was still explaining feelings to me better than I ever could (specifically with the songs The Archer and Cornelia Street). And now with folklore and evermore she's simply absolutely perfected her story-telling and I find myself deeply moved even by the songs I don't directly relate to. I feel like she has this amazing ability to find the absolute truth in the specific. I've never had a summer romance with someone who already had a girlfriend and mostly wanted to go back to her, and yet the bridge of august feels so real to me, y'know?
Back when we were still changin' for the better Wanting was enough For me, it was enough To live for the hope of it all Cancel plans just in case you'd call And say, "Meet me behind the mall" So much for summer love and saying "us" 'Cause you weren't mine to lose
It's hard to explain but looking at this, like it's so much more than the story it's telling. It's talking about how when you're young you really need so little to feel satisfied; how sometimes the idea of someone maybe spending time with you is better than actually doing things with other people; and how if someone using you without much thought can make you feel like you're not even entitled to grieve what you lost. Sorry. I'll stop. Don't want to go insane.
So, all of this is very personal and unique to me, but I think really the main thing that draws me to her is how vulnerable and honest she is about emotions, how eloquently she can explain the pain of being alive to me. Some people think she isn't the strongest singer, but I think, much like John actually, one of her greatest assets is how good she is at projecting emotion. The song happiness is a song I think has some lyrically weak moments but her vocal performance on it is so raw and devastating that every single line works even when, looking at it on paper, it feels like it shouldn't.
Hope this rambling made sense to you, lmao?? I love talking about Taylor though so thanks for the ask! Also very open to giving song recs if you do want to check her out more but I won't unless solicited to lmao *Sort of off-topic but I do think there's a relation between my fascination with the Beatles' history and my love for a great break-up song. I like pain I guess :)

first of all, thank you 💘 second of all...
ok ok ok don’t get too excited, but I finally got the juice to start working on the next part of Fanatic 🖤 most of you guys will be like ‘who cares’ but i know some of you have been waiting for this for a while! it’s been what, 2 months?? hope I’m not jinxing myself by saying this *knocks on wood* also not to hype myself too much but it’s kinda bomb 😳 maybe this is just my sick bias but I’ve really been wanting to write about...aftermath iykwim haha. reader all scared & shy & trying to avoid him but yk he’s not going to leave her alone :P
I also figured out the ending to it will come back!! it wouldn’t be shiggy if it didn’t get dangerous 😈 also gonna be nice to write some eyes-rolling-back-in-the-head fuckery so our favorite handsy creep can finally get his dick wet with his beloved little nursey <3
here are some other vague ideas, some based on requests, some not. as always no promises!!
BNHA—pillage & plunder with fantasy AU warlord Bakugo (and his gang of ruffians?? hmm...)
BNHA—Overhaul makes you work off your daddy’s gambling debts the extra hard way uwu...also I have SO many ideas for Overhaul 😷 after I finish iwcb my next multi-part fic will probably be with him
BNHA—various things with reader as an aspiring villain set in the same universe as Caught in the Act: reader getting quarantined with shiggy & dabi...dabi getting mad at you after you keep fucking up...incel shiggy jacking it to his adorable protégée without her knowledge (a galaxy brain request from a very good buddy!!!!)
BNHA—ABO with alpha Hawks and omega reader in an elevator...and uh-oh, it’s stuck! and you’re going into heat! oh no, whatever will you do??
Haikyuu—you get stuck in a hole in a wall, good thing your dutiful boyfriend Kuroo is there to help you out ;)
Haikyuu—gangbang with Tsukki, Bokuto, Akaashi, and Kuroo...a challenge bc I’ve never written a gangbang before!! will have to do some research 🧐
Haikyuu—your bf Atsumu does mean things when he’s jealous, like putting his hands up your skirt in public
KNY—Kokushibou decides to keep a shrine maiden as his cute little human pet 💜 actually already wrote pt. 1 but I’ll wait to post til I’m done with Fanatic
AxK—just some no good very bad yandere content with Dr. Midori...neglect play stuff...sensory deprivation stuff...icky icky
Gintama—something with Kamui. does this count as monsterfucking? very very rough...idk what exactly? some form of dastardly acts

thanks for the concern friends 💕💕 I’ve been preoccupied by things happening irl for the past few weeks, trying to educate myself, going to protests, etc.
also in case anyone else is confused, my stance is and always has been that Black lives matter and all cops are bastards. I’m not sure my porn blog is the right place to talk about this at length but if you’re a bootlicker, please smash that unfollow button and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. if you don’t already have a decently functioning moral compass you should not get anywhere near my writing...fr

omg thank you & yes yes a million times yes!!! hope you don’t mind commitment issues and student loan debt 💝👯‍♀️

the line between not hawksfucker and hawksfucker is very thin and very blurry, beware.....lol and thank you!!
the video you recommended...like damn!!! that’s exactly the vibe I feel like fratty Hawks x reader from be a little bad would be like if they had a happy ending eventually (start at 1:39)!!!!! “I didn’t make you do this” “I’m not accusing you of anything” it’s that exact dynamic. imo Hawks might be a little less willing to make things official and reader would prob have a hard time being straightforward enough to ask tho...hmmm
I did get several requests for a part 2! I’m thinking it over atm. I will say tho that most of my reqs have very slow turnaround so if I write it, it might be a while
Tumblr media
ooh I love getting recommendations! here’s what I like:
fanfic: I read stuff like what I write (smut, kink, yandere, villains). at some point I’m going to make a long post of fic recs of my own! I also read fluff and character x character ship fic so interests are pretty broad
TV: humor, crime shows like Bones, Criminal Minds, Psych, that kind of thing. nothing too dark or complicated, nothing that requires too much investment. same goes for anime
movies: pretty much everything! lately I’m really into Howl’s Moving Castle and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
books: literary fiction. can I say I’m into dark academia if the only dark academia I’ve read is The Secret History? favorite books I’ve read semi-recently are TSH, All the Light We Cannot See, The Poisonwood Bible, and Discipline & Punish. currently reading Foucault’s History of Sexuality
music: idk man...all kinds of stuff. I listen based on vibe more than genre. all my spotify playlists are named things like “sunday” and “the power” and “[sparkle emoji]”. my artists on repeat are Hozier, The Weeknd, Kendrick, M.I.A., The Neighborhood (F I’m a basic bitch) but I’ll try anything once
Tumblr media Tumblr media
jfc these two asks have given me so much hope 🥰😭💗 you know what? sooner or later I’m going to post Kamui x reader smut and it’s going to get 3 notes from the three of us liking it and that’s okay because I’ve thirsted over this man too long and too hard to go my entire life without reading over-indulgent reader-insert porn of him. yes the villain kink jumped out but DAMN!!! the man has ‘h*rny scumbag who lets his instincts rule him’ baked into both his DNA and his psyche, and I’m so here for it 😌
Tumblr media
if you don’t know who Kamui is, do me a favor and watch gintama. yes there are like 400 episodes but it’s worth it. I will convert more bitches to the gintama thirst train if it costs me my life. Kamui was made to star in disrespectful breeding kink smut and this is a hill I will die on.
Tumblr media
??? sure, if you can point me toward part 2 ????? lmao
I’m guessing you meant to ask for a pt 2 instead of pt 3? in which case, thanks for asking!! but tbh...for some reason I have a really hard time imagining what a pt 2 would look like, maybe because I wrote it 100% from Overhaul’s POV so it’s hard for me to define the reader’s feelings. I’m not saying it’ll never happen but 🤷‍♀️
HOWEVER if it’s Overhaul content in general you’re craving, you’re in luck!!! he’s a favorite of mine. legit he ticks so many of my boxes—villain kink? check. medical/scientist kink? check. yakuza kink? honey I’m weak. I’ll definitely be writing more for him in the future!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh no! I checked it on my computer & on mobile and all of the links are working for me? are the links still broken for you guys?
anyway, here are the rules, here’s the short version of the request rules, and here is part 1 and part 2 of it will come back.
thank you to everyone who has sent kind words, everyone who replies to my writing, and everyone who posts thirst in the tags!!! I read that shit!!!! and it makes me fucking cry, I love you all
one more thing: several people have requested continuations to Sleepless, Sidekick, and Fanatic. on one hand, I’m so flattered that you guys want more!!! on the other hand, I actually already answered asks about pt. 2′s for those particular fics. before you request a continuation of anything, it’s probably a good idea to look up the name of the fic as a tag on my blog so you can check and see if anyone else had the same question 💖💖💖

I want to get into kpop but i don't have any idea where to start? There's so much out there, do you have any tips or recs?
Why hello friend and future Kpop cohort!
I totally get you. The genre is pretty expansive and it can feel overwhelming. Especially if you’re brand new and you have no idea what’s good and what’s not. I got into it with a slight bit of advantage because I got into it about 10 years or so ago, before it really started getting big in western pop culture. So I was able to kind of grow into it and watch the genre grow with me and from there I could figure out my tastes when it comes to that industry.
How did I originally get into it? Well, like the total weeb I am, I am an anime lover so I would listen to their opening theme songs and a lot of it I really liked the sound of, so from there I kind of got into jpop (Japanese-pop) and then I started experimenting more with Kdramas, jdramas, cdramas, tdramas, etc. And just like with anime, I would listen to the music being played and think, “ok, I like that, where can I buy it?”. The downside is that 10 and 15 years ago, the Asian pop industry was not big in western culture so it was super hard to acquire the music through legal means. A lot of the music wasn’t available on the US Itunes or any of the other venues. I would literally have to make playlists on youtube for those songs or illegally download them, etc. But the thing with finding the music on youtube back in those days was that youtube was still relatively new and copyright issues was a seemingly never-ending battle there (I mean, it still is but that’s beside the point, youtube needs to hurry up and get with the times!). So you could create playlists of your favorite Asian drama songs but the videos had a tendency to be blocked frequently because of copyright claims (especially with the Japanese songs, Japan takes no prisoners when it comes to copyright). There was also a time when I would go on Amazon and just purchase the physical soundtrack CD as well.
But thankfully, those days are now over. I am so happy that this music industry is starting to make more of a wave over on this side of the world so I don’t have to jump through all of these hoops trying to find music that I want to listen to. i can typically find everything I’m looking for on Spotify these days.
As for any tips on how you can get into it, there’s really not much I can say. Like with all music, its completely subjective, based on your own music tastes. A lot of it is going to be trial and error. If you have Pandora, I would recommend listiening to a Kpop station and that should kind of give you a feel for the type of music you’re into and which bands and artists you would like to follow. You could also take my approach -- you could watch anime and the various Asian dramas and listen to those soundtracks and that can also give you a feel for the kinds of music you like. What I’ve taken to recently is creating two Spotify playlists. One playlist is designated for putting all the music in for all of the artists I’m interested in potentially following (Asian Pop is what I titled it). Then while I’m at work, I’ll turn on the playlist and whenever a song comes on that I’m really vibing with, I add it to the second playlist (Asian Pop Faves). And after a while, you start building up a good playlist full of songs you’re really vibing with.
As I don’t know what your music tastes are, I can’t really recommend music that you’ll definitely like. But I can give you some of the bands and artists I listen to.
Here are a few of the more popular bands that are getting pretty big right now:
-BTS (I’m not a huge stan of BTS but they have a few songs I like)
-Twice
-Red Velvet
-Blackpink
I’ll also give you some of my faves.
BoA (K-Pop, J-Pop) – Of course, if you’ve been following me a while, you knew there was no way I was not going to include her as a recommendation. I love her so much, I think her voice is super unique and she’s an absolute powerhouse when it comes to performing live. She’s been dubbed the Queen of Kpop and no matter what, no matter what the next big thing comes out of the industry is, BoA will always by my Once and Future Queen of the industry.
2NE1(K-Pop) – If you like Blackpink but have never listened to 2NE1, what even are you doing with your life? So much of Blackpink is heavily inspired by the era left behind 2NE1. 2NE1 sadly isn’t active anymore but they have left a permanent mark on the industry for sure. NO ONE interested in Kpop should sleep on 2NE1 in my opinion.
AAA (J-Pop) – This is a J-pop band and much like BoA, I’ve been following them for the past decade or so. They’re kind of unique in the sense that the band is a mix of both men and women. This is actually a rarity within the industry. You don’t see it too much. I suspect its because the industry often caters their music to different fanbases. All male bands will cater to a specific fanbase in their music, while all-female bands will cater to a different fandom with their music. So when you have both grouped together, you kind of have to find a middle-ground in that area and I think AAA has really succeeded in that area. I love their sound and they are so much fun to watch live.
Back-On (J-Pop) – Another J-Pop band. This one is all-male. If you’re into a little more of a rock vibe, this is the band for you.
Hikaru Utada (J-Pop) – If you’re into Kingdom Hearts, then you’ve already heard her but definitely don’t sleep on any of her other projects. I think she’s really great and has more of an R&B style approach to her pop.
Pentagon (K-Pop) – An all-male band. They got the nice boy-band pop sound if you’re looking for that
IU (K-Pop) – Female artist. She has a very clear soprano voice and she often mixes jazz style into her pop which creates a really unique sound that I enjoy.
Punch (K-Pop) – Along the same lines with IU, a really very clear beautiful voice
KARD (K-Pop) – A mix of male and female artists, they don’t have a lot out right now, but what I’ve heard so far I really like.
Also, if you’re looking for a soundtrack to listen to, I recommend the You’re Beautiful kdrama soundtrack. It’s really great and also if you want to watch a kdrama, You’re Beautiful is also a fantastic drama as well.
Here’s some individual songs that I like a lot:
Cool Hot Sweet Love – Red Velvet
RPM – SF9
Drama – AAA
Horizon – AAA
Milky Way – BoA
Masayume Chasing – BoA
Woman – BoA
Manhattan Tango – BoA
Make Me Complete – BoA
Everlasting – BoA
The Shadow – BoA
No. 1 – BoA
M.E.P – BoA
Implode – BoA
Romance – Boa
Hurricane Venus – BoA
Etude – BoA
One Shot, Two Shot -- BoA
(alright, that’s it with the BoA recs; I told you guys, I love her)
Grip! – Every Little Thing
Dejavu – AAA
First Name – AAA
Next Stage – AAA
Thank You – AAA
Hide-Away – AAA
Find You – AAA
Get Chu! --- AAA
Strike Back – Back-On
Bad Boy – Red Velvet (there’s both a Korean and English version, both sound great!)
It’s Me (Pick Me) – Produce 101
Just Do It Yo! – Pentagon
Make It Right – BTS
Boy in Luv – BTS
Done For Me – Punch
DNA – BTS
2NE1 – Happy
As If Its Your Last – Blackpink
It Hurts – 2NE1
Ugly – 2NE1
Psycho – Red Velvet
Don’t Leave Me – BTS
Scary Fairy Tale – IU
Come Back Home – 2NE1
Lost Child – IU
Havana – IU
Dinosaur – AKMU
Fake Love – BTS (both regular version and rock version)
With you – Back-On, Me
Yes or Yes – Twice
Endless Fighters – AAA
Peter Pan -- EXO
3-6-5 -- EXO
But anyway, I think that’s it for now. This list in no way encompasses everything that I love in the industry but this should give a good starting point!

i’m sorry i got so behind!! i separated this into sections so you can find your ask easily 💖 also the rest of the what-if questions are in here if you’re interested!
STORY QUESTIONS:
Tumblr media
she would definitely feel guilty still, for letting aileen leave even when she knew something bad would happen :( but at least she wouldn’t have the guilt of “failing” as a mom on her shoulders (i don’t think she failed, it was a mistake anyone would make, but that’s how she sees it)
Tumblr media
omg i love leppelier!! but there probably won’t be anymore characters inspired by a separate peace (even finn has taken a life of his own and i see less and less similarities to finny every day), mostly because i like to think of my own characterization!! but everything i do is a tiny bit inspired by all the books/shows/movies/games that i love, so i’m sure there will be some inspiration thrown in there from a separate peace 💖
Tumblr media
originally i said he was bi, but i realized it makes way more sense in the future if he’s gay!! so yeah he’s gay lmao!
Tumblr media
that’s a really good question!! and it’ll actually be partly answered in the future, so i don’t want to say too much!! but ummm perhaps... maybe... asa DID hear finn.... 😬
Tumblr media
i know right, poor bby :( if jo & owen hadn’t stayed together, i think they all would’ve been happier in the long run. it would’ve been hard at first, trying to figure out visitation & making sure owen has time to actually bond with jett, but once they got that figured out, they could’ve been great coparents and friends :/
Tumblr media
fjksjd i hope you’ll like how everything happens either way!! 💗
Tumblr media
it would be an entirelyyy different story sdjkdj i actually don’t even know what the story would be about if he couldn’t see spirits... i was tossing around the idea of having a gen focused on depression (i have depression and i thought maybe it would be nice to have an outlet to express it) but i realized it would’ve been too hard for me to write about on a daily basis. soooo yeah i have no clue what asa’s story would be without ghosts lmao!!
Tumblr media
YESSS that’s describes her 100%!! 💖💖
Tumblr media
@killjoytrait god i know right!! literalite blessed us all with an angel :’)
Tumblr media
jksjd you’re actually the second person to guess this, but she’s just a random model sim! sorry to disappoint 😭 but i did make a hypothetical danny/mikaela baby here if you’re curious!!
Tumblr media
when i got this notification all i saw was “i don’t want it to sound like i hate asa” and i was ready to FIGHT 🗡️ but this is totally fair!! i also love complicated family dynamics, and whenever i can make it complicated, i do sjdkjd but yeah it’ll definitely be interesting!! also fun fact, originally i planned for casper to be really jealous of asa once he found out that danny was asa’s “real” dad, not casper’s (especially since he wasn’t even legally tied to danny at the time). but as i developed casper’s character i realized it just wasn’t in his nature to be resentful like that. but i’m excited to get into the dynamic between casper/asa/Baby because of the age differences (casper will be 16 years older than Baby) and like you said, asa will have to adjust to being the middle child!!
Tumblr media
thank you!! 💖 and mood sjdjkd
Tumblr media
omg ofc i care!!! this is so cute!! i tried to find the song you mentioned, but it’s greyed out on spotify and it’s not on youtube as far as i can tell :( but i’ll try to buy the digital movie version when i can! anyway this made me really happy that you thought of them jsdkj ily 💖💖
HELP/ADVICE:
Tumblr media
hmm well i kinda feel like i don’t have any right to talk about this subject, but at the same time it’s important, so... i’ll just say my opinion lmao but i’m not trying to talk over POC at all!! but honestly, diversity is a requirement for me to follow you. i don’t trust people who, like you said, will create all white sims and a couple racially ambiguous sims and then complain when people accuse them of a lack of diversity. using the excuse of “it’s just a game / it’s just my preference” doesn’t work for me lmao, it just makes me wonder why you would PREFER to play a game entirely devoid of people of color... there’s just no reason for it. i’m not creating diverse sims for “brownie points” or to please people, i’m doing it because that’s the world i live in? imo you shouldn’t have to think about it, you should just... do it.... lmao. and if someone calls you out for not being diverse, you should hear them out instead of getting defensive. like for example, a few months ago someone sent me a message asking if i would have any asian characters, and that was eye-opening to me because i hadn’t realized i was lacking in that area. so i made elaine and found a way to work her into the story, which ended up adding a lot of good stuff to my future plans!! so yeah that’s my opinion lmao sorry for the ramble!
Tumblr media
i’m sorry, i don’t know what you mean? i don’t make build cc :( sorry!!
Tumblr media
hey! you can definitely merge them! i merge almost all of my build/buy cc, just make sure that the packages aren’t too big (s4studio always gives me an error if if the file is too large, and if that happens i just split it in half). you can merge all of your custom content, but don’t merge your mods! (ie. you can merge hair/clothes/makeup/accessories/etc. but don’t merge game changing mods, like mc command center, ui cheats, etc.) i hope that helps!! and you’re not annoying at all bby!! 💖
Tumblr media
i do!! it’s here! it’s not super detailed though lmao, feel free to ask if you need something specific 💖
Tumblr media
hey!! i have some various advice here! but if you’re worried about copying... honestly don’t be lmao. since the dawn of time, we’ve all been recycling the same few plotlines & character types. as long as you put your own original spin on it (and you’re not directly copying someone’s story) i see nooo problem with using similar plot devices!!
NICE PEOPLE :’)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lmaoo thank you!! i actually love my supernatural posts, and i’m trying to keep loving them even when they aren’t as popular. but anyway, i really appreciate this!! sometimes i feel like a loser for how much time & thought i put into this silly story sjdkjd but then asks like yours make it all worth it!! thank you so much 💗💗
Tumblr media
@carmeldreams ILY EM!! 😭💖💖💖
Tumblr media
yes PLEASE come get this kiss....... sjdkjds 💗
Tumblr media
@astralani YOU FIRST jskdjd ily 😭😭💖
Tumblr media
@thesimparrot thank you so much zoe!! you’re so sweet 😭💖💖 i’ve been hoping that you’re safe and doing well 💗
Tumblr media
@simsnectar thank you for thinking of me!! the same goes to you! 💖
MISC:
Tumblr media
that’s true, i didn’t think about that 😭 you can see that i’m a pessimist lmaoo
Tumblr media
@killjoytrait oh my god yesss this is literally what i believe! i don’t have a religion so i gotta believe in something, and the multiverse theory is so interesting lmao!
Tumblr media
that’s very true lmao, there are some objectively bad choices for sure. i was thinking more like... what if my entire life would be different because i walked a different route to school in 9th grade or something fjskdj and what if my life would be way better in that case 😭
Tumblr media
is this about the two trucks having sex meme sjdkjd
Tumblr media
lmaoo i do the same thing, the office has taken over my life jsdkj
Tumblr media
thank you for the recs!! 💖 i actually watch bella fiori sometimes, but sometimes i wish her videos were more detailed :/ she’s so cute though i love her sdjkd and i don’t know why i stopped watching eleanor neale?? i used to watch her all the time but i think i started disliking how sensationalized her videos were getting. like the one video where she put a picture of a suspect in the thumbnail, but that man was cleared of all wrongdoing and his name & face has been dragged through the mud for years... so that just put a bad taste in my mouth lmao but i’ll have to check out bailey sarian!
COVID-19 (you can skip the rest of this if it makes you anxious!)
Tumblr media
i’m sorry you’re going through this :( i’ll be thinking about you 💖💖
Tumblr media
yeah exactly!! i’m not worried for myself at all, i’m healthy and active, but i’m very very worried about accidentally transmitting it to one of my immunosuppressed relatives :(
Tumblr media
thank you for this!! you take care too bby 💖
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yiiiikes yeah it’s really scary!! every day it feels more and more dystopian here, and i’m in a state that only has 20-ish cases right now, which isn’t a lot. but our whole school system is shutting down, all the government buildings are closed, all activities/shows/movies are closed, people are clearing out entire grocery stores, etc. it’s freaking me out tbh.... i’m just hoping that if we all can quarantine ourselves properly, the hospitals won’t get overfilled, so everyone will be able to get the care they need :(

m ANYWAY please tell me your top five favorite new songs that you've discovered in the past year-ish?
Oh man, this is probably going to be boring because I’ve for sure posted all of these over the year, but it’s what I’ve got! I feel like I’ve gotten very bad at finding new music. These days I mostly let Spotify rec me things, or I pick up on something in a movie or recced by a person I trust and then just claim it as my own. Maybe I should make one of my new year resolutions to make a more concerted effort to find new music.
Anyway, here are some songs, which are not new! And some whys, which might be!
I Need Never Get Old – Nathaniel Rateliff & the Shapeshifters
I think this is one of the ones that Spotify recced me. I sometimes just put on Roots Rock or Southern Gothic playlists in the background if I’m feeling aimless (a habit I picked up when I was living in Massachusetts and missing the South) and then Spotify will pick up on that general vibe and spiral out from there. Which, I guess is the whole point of it. You don’t need me to explain that. Anyway! This came from there and it is A JAM. Like, talk about a barnstormer. This shakes the whole damn house. There are ways in which it reminds me of the Three Dog Night and Blood, Sweat, and Tears albums I grew up with, and also ways in which it is thoroughly modern in sensibility. Also it just makes me want to MOVE.
This ended up on the Summer in Ascenvallee playlist, which is the playlist I made to go with the Steampunk novel I work on off and on with a friend. But of course, it also got attached to Crowley in my head, because everything gets attached to Crowley these days.
I needed to tryNeeded to fallI needed your love I’m burning awayI need never get old
Let This Remain – Alana Henderson
I think I found this the same way I found the previous song, but on the first listen I identified it so strongly with one of the characters in the Steampunk that I immediately just started playing it on a loop. (Because let’s be real, also, cello. I’m so weak for them!) The character, Amelia, is a young woman growing up in a time just before huge change and she’s sort of struggling with the future she wants for herself and her country. She had been betrothed to a young man she grew up with. And she does love him, but she’s not in love with him, so at the point where the story picks up she’s acting this out by being a bit of a gadfly and hanging out with bad influences and falling in love with the owner of the opera house who grew up In Society but is in a bit of disgrace for his choices. She’s uh, got some decisions to make about which parts of herself she takes with her and which parts she lets die in the inevitable fire.
But you could be the only one I don’t regret yetBe the only one I don’t regret yetAnd even if we don’tThe idea and the will just grow into a greater wantAnd it will manifest in waysLet tonight be a stutter midst the eloquence of days
Jenny – Erin McKeown (The Mountain Goats cover)
So, confession, outside of my tradition of singing This Year with @anachronistique every New Years (very poorly, on my end, Naomi sings fine), I’ve never really listened to The Mountain Goats. I knew of them, and I’d always hear a song here or there and think ‘ah yeah, I get the devotion’, but I never let myself fall into it. You know what I will let myself fall into though? A podcast about how creative work gets done. So I started listening to I Only Listen to the Mountain Goats even though I do not, in fact, even sporadically listen to The Mountain Goats.
Friends, it’s a Real Good Podcast. The first season is more structured than the second, and in that first season they had folks do covers of every song off All Hail West Texas and well, I fell in love with this one. It’s such a vivid slice of that character’s life. It’s fun to sing while speeding down the highway with your windows down imagining you are on the back of a motorcycle with your girl. Also, Erin McKeown’s voice is downright lovely and even though I’d never heard of her before I now also listen to her stuff all the time. Do recommend!
I hopped on the back of the bikeWrapped my arms around youAnd I sank my face into your hairAnd then I inhaled as deeply as I possibly couldYou were as sweet and delicious as the warm desert airAnd you pointed your headlamp toward the horizonWe were the one thing in the galaxyGod didn’t have his eyes on
Meticulous Bird – Thao & the Get Down Stay Down
I have also been sleeping on Thao Nguyen, but like, YOU GUYS. SHE’S GREAT. EVERY ONE OF THESE ALBUMS IS SOLID. I’M SORRY I’M SO SLOW. A couple months ago I was bored and looking for something to listen to while brushing my teeth, so I queued up a few episodes of Song Exploder for unfamiliar artists and the ep for “Astonished Man” was one of them. The song is about her estranged father, so I could relate to the difficult relationship there, but also it just has a sound I really respond to. It’s a little pop, a little dirty in the mix, a little electronic, a nice solid bass line. Anyway, from there I realized that I’d been hearing “Holy Roller” all over the place lately and then I just listened to only her for like, three days.
This song in particular has been attached to some of the Apres Moi Le Deluge characters in my head. Most importantly Ana, who is supposed to be a cleaned consciousness that was placed into an android body to be used as a thief by some Not Great Guys, but because she’s been rebooted more than the other consciousnesses—who are usually just tossed away after tbh—she’s starting to crack and remember her life from before. She starts the novel in opposition to our protagonists, but teams up with them pretty quick when she finds out the scope of what’s been done to her.
I, I resent the inventionListen, listen pay attentionI know the science of the fictionOf conviction of the henchmenI am here for the mastermindsThey told us that you sold usOh my oh my oh my godWe didn’t know you’d get ferocious
Manifest - Andrew Bird
Look, I don’t know if this latest album is actually Andrew’s finest work yet, but it’s pretty good. I love Andrew Bird’s music a great deal, have done since I experienced the Sonic Arboretum showing at the ICA, which is the extent of the importance for this one. Some days you just need a fiddle and a story. Or a fiddle and a canyon. One of the two.
I can hear your tendrils still diggingFor everything that’s walked this Earth once livingThen to be exhumed and burned to vaporCan you save her?Now she’s in the airRadical and freeNeither here nor thereShe’s obliged to no one
Uh, and those are some songs! I hope someone gets a dance out of one of them. Or enjoys my rambling. Or something!
[Send me a sleepover ask.]

10 Albums I Loved in 2018
2018 was the year I finally, finally started just listening to a whole bunch of music again, admittedly in good part (but not all!) spurred by getting super into one band, and then listening to members' other work, and influences.
But since I've gone from really enjoying branching out to trying to even more by doing stuff this year like switching back over to Spotify for my at-work listening and already found a bunch of stuff I'm loving even within the past week, I figured I'd make a post with 10 of my favorite new-to-me discoveries from just that last few months of 2018, and maybe use this as a jumping-off point for 2019 and beyond!
While this is nominally an album recommendations list, pretty much everything here is more of an artist recommendation where I picked one favorite album to share—there's a couple that only have the one album and a couple where I haven't gotten around to listening to more yet.
OK Go, Of the Blue Colour of the Sky [Youtube] - [Spotify]
So I know I've made an OK Go music videos masterpost, because their videos are what they's famous for, I love these guys so, so much even just straight up as a band. I really regret letting them fall off my radar and not even really looking into them much back when they were. It's so hard to pick my favorite album of theirs, but I think it's gotta be this one. Please listen to my beloved nerds.
(The live album, 180/365, would also make a very good jumping-off point though. It's heavy on stuff from this album since that was the current album at the time but it's still got a solid selection from Oh No and the… one… song off the self-titled debut that they still do a fair bit (without shenanigans).
Secret Dakota Ring, Do Not Leave Baggage All the Way [Youtube] - [Spotify]
So this was the solo project of OK Go lead guitarist/keyboardist Andy Ross before he joined the band. (He also put out a second album, Cantarell a few years after joining the band, between their albums.) It's got a couple tracks I'm not that into (a couple that are mostly monologue/speech clips from stuff that are interlude-y and one actual song that leaves me flat) but even those feel mostly coherent as part of the total package and everything else I love a ton even just on their own merits, and I think this album might be my single favorite discovery this year outside of OK Go's work as an entire band.
Pyyramids, Brightest Darkest Day [Youtube*] - [Spotify]
*The Youtube playlist absolutely used to exist but it straight up disappeared last time the auto-generated album playlists updated
This is the other OK Go-adjacent band I checked out because we know I'm always on my bullshit; it's a side project between albums of bassist Tim Nordwind with a vocalist from another band (note to self: I really should remember to check out He Say/She Say at some point). I wish I had more to say about it, I don't find myself listening to it quite as much as the Secret Dakota Ring albums but I do like it a lot or else it wouldn't be here. (I'm not so on my bullshit I'm gonna tell you all to check out something I don't actually like a ton!)
Pixies, Surfer Rosa [Youtube] - [Spotify]
Pro tip: a really good way to find media you might like is by checking out things the people who make stuff you already like like. (Primarily when working within the same type of media, like, say, your favorite band's favorite bands, since then it's likely to have actually influenced their work, but if you find out your tastes line up in some other sphere then that's also great!)
Surfer Rosa vs. Doolittle seems to be the eternal question; while it loses a little for not having "Debaser" I think this one wins out for me personally. (I'd also like to give some brownie points to Bossanova if only for that opening track though.)
Depeche Mode, Some Great Reward [Youtube] - [Spotify]
No, this isn't Violator, and yes, that's probably heresy. But while the songs I'm particularly into are spread pretty evenly across the span from this to Songs of Faith and Devotion, I think this is the Depeche Mode album where the average hits highest for me.
But anyway, I'd been meaning to try out a decent amount of new wave for a while, and when Youtube recommendations started serving me up some Depeche Mode, I figured I'd give them a whirl, and I came out really happy for it.
Muse, Simulation Theory [Youtube*] - [Spotify]
*The Youtube playlist seems to have a very hard time keeping the [super] deluxe version remixes versus the regular versions straight, so there's some missing and some duplicates
Y'ALL. MUSE IS GOOD AGAIN.
Okay it's probably an exaggeration to imply they were ever truly bad, but the two previous albums were kind of underwhelming to me (though not without highlights!), and most of my friends who like them seem to agree. But goddamn this was a triumphant return to form. And the super deluxe edition has remixes/alternate arrangements of nearly every song, so this is more like the best two Muse albums in at least a decade.
All Hail the Silence, AHTS-001 [Spotify]
This one's cheating a little bit—it's an EP, not an album, and I actually did listen to it once back in 2016 when it released. But at the time, everything but "Looking Glass" left me feeling pretty unsatisfied, and that particular track had come out back in 2012 and had me excited for years waiting for more, so kind of left it alone for years in disappointment. But recently the other few songs have grown on me a lot, so now I'm really looking forward to ‡ (read "Daggers"), which comes out… oh, this Friday.
The Slow Readers Club, Cavalcade [Spotify]
These guys are the major competition for Do Not Leave Baggage All the Way in "favorite discovery other than OK Go last year", I think it's too close to call. In probably one of the weirder ways to pick up music, I actually checked this band out off a retweet from Bands FC, a twitter account that mashes up bands with soccer team logos, when they put out a new video, and I was into their sound pretty much instantly. But while last year's album Build a Tower is great I think I might be even a little more into this one from a few years back. And maybe the word gets spread we can eventually get some tour dates outside the UK someday. =P
(And in another instance of "yo, check out the things your faves like", one of my favorite new-to-me bands this year already I picked up off a retweet their lead singer made this past weekend.)
Thank You Scientist, Stranger Heads Prevail [Youtube] - [Spotify]
So apparently TieTuesday popped this album on as background music on stream one night. While I missed that particular stream, the sheer volume of people the next day thanking him for introducing them to it got me to pop it on the next day at work. Turns out prog rock with some brass is a sound I, too, am in favor of? (Also they apparently formed pretty close to where a couple of my friends live, which is neat trivia.)
Band-Maid, World Domination [Youtube] - [Spotify]
I feel like most of the people following me probably already know about Japan's girls metal band boom, but it's a very real thing, and it's not just Babymetal! But this was another band I found through Youtube recs and I'm pretty into it even though I thought I wasn't that into metal.
(I've also really liked the few Cyntia tracks I've checked out even besides the not-very-metal "Akatsuki no Hana", and Doll$Boxx shades into metal a bit. Maybe I just like a real specific subset of metal?)

BEST FRIEND! YOONGI
Tumblr media
(word count is like 2000+ oops)
- First things first, let’s be real,, best friend yoongi would roll his eyes at you a LOT n0 doubt
-   your friendship is probably built on insulting each other, in like an affectionate way lmao
- also music,, that would definitely be a major factor of your friendship
-   he’d have such good song recs aaaaa
-   i’m still screaming about his playlist on Spotify !!!!!!
-  ok but like imagine trying to wake him up
-   He’d probably hit u over the head with a pillow n prolly swear at u to get lost
- The most effective way to wake him up was to tip water on his face,,, which he hATes lmao
- But it works s0,,,
-  Sometimes when he’d go a night without sleeping and was feelin kinda cheeky,, he’d pour water on u at 4:30am and justify it as payback
-   loWKEY Cuddles
-   like you’d just be sitting on the couch watching a movie n he’s just flop down and use your lap as a pillow and you’d be all like “yoongi wyd” and he’d be “shh ur comfy”
-   OR he’d be working on his music really late at night and you’d try to stay up with him but eventually you’d just rest your head on his shoulder bc you’re So Tired
-   he’d complain your head was too heavy before realising u had fallen asleep lol
-   He’s become a lot more relaxed after you’d fallen asleep,, he’d probably wrap a blanket around you fjdfsjk hes a real sweetheart okay
-   Okay but him teaching you piano awe
-   so like at one point you’d really want to learn the piano but wHy pay for lessons when a Master Pianist was your best friend ??
-   “hey yoongi can u teach me piano?”
-   “no”
-   “teach me piano or i’ll steal your kumamon plushie”
-   “you wouldn’t dAre”
-   “wATch mE”
-   you’re over at his house and he’s complaining about how bored he is so your like “hEY you should teach me how to play that song u always hum in your sleep”
-   “I’m not thAT bored”
-   but he gives in and you’re sitting next to each other and he’s getting frustrated because you keep pressing two keys at once like “y/N ITS NOt thAT HARD”
-   practice makes perfect J
-   When u guys are sitting on his bedroom floor sharing earphones and he’s sitting cross legged working on his computer and you’re lying on your stomach tapping mindless rhythms onto his leg while watching him type
-   More than once you guys have fallen asleep on the floor together
-   You guys would spend most of your time at each other’s houses
-   But when u did go out and catch a train or bus to the nearby shopping mall, you’d always share earbuds and he’d stare out the window and you’d always wonder what he thought about but whenever you’d ask he’d always just shrug and ignore you
-   I feel like yoongi is one of those people that high key hates small talk like No I Don’t Care how the weather is, talk about your first pet or how u would pray to the stars bc u thought they would grant every wish
-   and you guys would stay awake until the really early hours of the morning sitting on his bed and talking about all things that made u scared of the dark
-   during the day I feel like your friendship wouldn’t be so much about talking, more about just spending time together at a local coffee shop sipping on scorching hot chocolates and just watching the snow fall outside and observing the people who came into the shop
-   I think people watching would be something u guys did often, and you’d make up lil stories using all the information u could gather from a person
-   like a lady is walking past wearing a business outfit n she is carrying a child and yoongi would guess that she was Smart And Successful and then start to rant about how Sometimes Success Is Not What Matters and the lady wanted a child to love n you’d nod b4 pointing out the lady wasn’t wearing a ring and suggested the child wasn’t hers n she was just babysitting or something
-   Observation 101 ;D
-   sometime when you’d force him to come clothes shopping w you and you’d try something on and asked if it suited you and he’s sarcastically cringe and be all like “don’t wear that when you’re with me”
-   and you’d pout a lil before rolling your eyes with a lil “whatever” n he’d feel bad and be all “kidding, kidding, you look nice I guess”
-   tho like tbh he’d give u fashion advice all the time like “geez y/n you’re wearing /that/ scarf with that shirt?” and you’d roll your eyes and be all like “ha yeah like you can talk you’re literally wearing pajamas”
-   you’d go to every one of his basketball games and you’d always be the one cheering the loudest and he’d be low key embarrassed by it,,
-   tbh he high key loved it but gosh no he’d never tell u that
-   You were his personal cheer squad partly because you were proud him,,, mostly because you knew it embarrassed him lmao
-   after every game you’d go this ice cream shop a few blocks down from the courts and you’d share a large sundae and he’d eat all the strawberries but you didn’t mind despite always complaining to him about it
-   if u play a sport he’d absolutely be at all your games,, though he’d just sit in the corner and watch with a small smile that grew every time u looked over and waved at him
-   sometimes,, by accident,, he’s get really into the game and if your team was winning or scored a goal he’d jump and with a huge grin before realising and slowly sitting back down lmao
-   okay but you’d absolutely love when yoongi was in a really good mood because he’d always laugh and joke w you and he’d be grinning at you with his adorable gummy smile and it just made you really happy to see him like that
-   sometimes yoongi would be feeling really down and just get all quiet(er) and reserved and just ignore you and u could always tell when he was upset but you also knew he wouldn’t want to talk about it
-   and despite how much he insists he just wants to be alone, you knew deep down he appreciates your presence when he’s like this
-   so you would always go get some take out and hand him a bowl of chicken katsu and rice but he’d just push it away but you’d just smile and pick up a book and read, leaning your back against him
-   and he’d eventually reach for the food u brought him and you couldn’t help but grin, making sure your hair hid your pleased expression
-   you always knew silence was best but if it was more casual you’d probably start ranting about how you’re beSt friends so you should tell each other stuff that’s getting u down ?? Buts he’d probably just have his headphones on and not even hear you
-   You’d sigh and go over to him and start lazily massaging his neck n shoulders while clenching your jaw because you’re still low key annoyed he won’t talk to u
-   But he’d tilt his head and accidentally moan really softly bUt it’s nOt his fAULT you’re really good at giving massages
-   when you’re upset yoongi doesn’t really know how to properly respond
-   I feel like he’d leave u alone for a bit first bc he just wouldn’t know what to say or do but then he’d remember all the times u were just there for him and he’d feel really guilty and uGH he better go check on you
-   But like if it was something really bad like you were crying your eyes out I think he’d be REALLY concerned, especially if you weren’t telling him what was wrong
-   like he’d demand to know if someone hurt you and silently swear that he’ll give it to whoever made you cry like this,, honestly he’d be so pissed
-   but you’d just shake your head n grip onto his shirt while soaking his shoulder with your tears
-   and he’d sigh and hold you close and gently stroke your hair
-   he would feel really weird saying anything, even just a simple “it’d gonna be alright”, so I think he’d just try to let his really awkward affection speak for itself and hope you would pick up on it
-   the next day tho after you assured him you were all better, he’d go back to his usual self and probably joke about how you made a mess of his shirt and you better not do that again
-   tho this is his way of expressing,, not that he won’t be there for you,, but that he just prays there won’t be a next time because honestly he cannot stand seeing you that upset
-   you know he’ll always care about and always be there for you when you needed him
-   if you were feeling insecure about yourself and you even slightly expressed these thoughts to yoongi, first he’d definitely roll his eyes at you and second, he’d tell you appearance is pointless anyways and that you should instead fix your terrible sense of humor
-   “stop worrying about that stuff y/n it doesn’t matter”
-   “who cares what others think you look fine anyways”
-   “stop saying that y/n I’d still be your friend no matter what u looked like”
-   tbh on your birthday yoongi probably wouldn’t get you a gift because “materialistic items are such a waste honestly y/n do u want to kill the planet?” and you’d just roll ur eyes and he’d say something like “besides isn’t our friendship enough? it takes a lot to put up with you, you know?”
-   okay but for one birthday,, he’d give u a song he wrote for you and he’d been working on for the past eight months and it was all about how grateful he was and he just put all his emotions and things he never could express to you all in this one beautiful song
-   like just imagine him, it’d be a huge deal, this wasn’t something he’d do for just anyone and the song was really personal and to trust it with someone was a HUGe deal okay
-   and he’d be low key blushing and you guys would just be sitting on his couch watching a movie like every year and he wasn’t really focused bc he was really nervous ??
-   but then he’d just play it cool and be all like “oh yeah that’s right I got u something”
-   and you’d be really!!?? bc wOW min yoongi actually got you a birthday present this year ??
-   and he’d just toss the box to you, like not even pass gently even tho you were sitting like 3.2 cm away from him like thanks ?? he was just really nervous and trying to get over his nerves
-   and you’d be smiling so much as you unwrap it and you’d see it was a cd and be like oh??
-   he’d shrug like “I got bored the other night and just wrote it idk” and you’d have no idea he’d literally spent almost a year making the song PERfect
- and you’d grin bc you could tell how much this meant to him and you throw yourself at him, pulling him into a bear hug and he’d awkwardly pat your back n mutter a lil “happy birthday”
- honestly though, yoongi would be the best bestfriend like he’d always be there for you and he’d be so reliable
- okay okay I have a part two for this so !!!!! anticipate it ????
- I just got a lil carried away wow I just
- Love
- Best friend yoongi
- My precious honey boy
- Also yeah idK THIS IS MY FIRST TIME PUBLISHING SOMETHING LIKE THIS IDK GO EASY ON ME PLS ILY

Episode 114 : Enter The Midnight
"...we fighting back - sorry Martin."
- Erick Sermon
This month marks twenty-five years (!) since the release of two monumental albums - "Midnight Marauders" by A Tribe Called Quest, and the Wu-Tang Clan's "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)". I still remember going to buy each of these albums which have had a huge influence on me over the years, and I thought that this episode would be a good time to feature them both. We have a mix of original tracks, alternate versions, covers, and original samples, alongside plenty of other tunes to keep your head bobbing!
There are still a few tickets left for Schoolly D and DJ Code Money on December 15th in Manchester - but you might want to be quick!
The Mouse Outfit are playing an Xmas special at Band on the Wall on December 18th - a few advance tickets left for that one too.
See Children of Zeus on tour!

Playlist/Notes
Minnie Riperton : Inside My Love
An excerpt of a soul classic from one of our departed greats. Minnie Riperton was well capable of singing well into the whistle register, and demonstrates that to spectacular effect at the end of this track from the essential "Adventures In Paradise" album, which I first encountered as part of "Lyrics To Go"...
A Tribe Called Quest : Lyrics To Go
This sample use was absolute genius. When I first heard this as a teenager I didn't have a clue that the high tone running through the whole track was actually a singer and not a keyboard, and it still stuns you the same way twenty-five years after release. Perfect production, together with Q-Tip and Phife (RIP) on the mic, make this album cut from "Midnight Marauders" every inch of a classic.
Funky DL : Midnight
London's Funky DL first came to popular notice as an MC, but clearly also has major skills as a producer, arranger, and keyboardist! His "Marauding At Midnight" album is a tribute to "Midnight Marauders", with instrumental versions of every track played with no sampled breaks/loops - just instrumentation, as well as backing vocals. "Midnight" was one of my low-key favourites on the original LP, so it's great to hear his take on it here. I couldn't resist the opportunity to cut a few samples over the top :)
Wu-Tang Clan : Clan In Da Front
On my first listen to "Enter The Wu-Tang", this was the track that made me know for sure that the album was a classic. The Wu members regularly battled to see who would get to be on any particular RZA beat, and you can hear for yourself how undeniable GZA was on this one - one of only two tracks on the album to feature just one MC.
The ARE : Clap Ya Hands
The "Manipulated Marauders" project is much older when I look at the release date (2007) than it feels, but still gets solid play from me on a regular basis. The ARE tears up the classic Bob James "Nautilus" sample amongst others to bring some freshness to the familiarity of the Tribe "Clap Ya Hands" track from "Midnight Marauders".
Rockwilder ft. Erick Sermon, Method Man, and Redman : Clutch Reloaded
I missed the original version of this track, but this remix is absolute fire! This might be the most aggro I've ever heard Erick Sermon, and I can't be the only one struck by the combination of "bunch a n****s walking down the block like it's Selma" and the lyric that gave us this month's epigraph. Following Erick, the match made in blunt smoke, Meth & Red, continues the lyrical assault, and Rockwilder's beat is a banger that reminds you of a classic sample atomised. A must-purchase!
Ice Cube : Arrest The President
The man who brought us "I Wanna Kill Sam" back in the 90s is back to burn and has absolutely no problem going in on Mango Mussolini! Atlanta's Shawn Ski provides a stomping, horn-laden beat while Cube calls out Agent Orange for being an asset of Russian intelligence, and his general devilish behaviour. This tune definitely puts you on notice for the upcoming "Everythang's Corrupt" album.
[DJ Quik] Nate Dogg ft. Eve : Get Up (Instrumental)
One of those singles I somehow picked up a couple of a while back and still barely play! The first single from Nate Dogg's third album, it's not crazy but does have that Quik flavour and the beat a good bridge between the bombast of the Cube track and something a little more subdued...
Public Enemy : See Something, Say Something
I was looking for something funky in this spot and this fit the bill perfectly. Chuck D is from the right kind of era to know what to do with a groove like this, and has the experience and intelligence to drop wisdom all over it. Gary G-Wiz is on production on this lyrically clever flip of the Department of Homeland Security slogan, an overlooked track from "How Do You Sell Soul To A Soulless People Who Lost Their Soul?"
El Michels Affair : C.R.E.A.M
Much harder to mix with than I thought, but that's often the case with live bands - tempos are much more likely to shift within the track than with electronically sequenced music! Anyway, this is just one of the many great Wu instrumental cover versions from El Michels Affair, who gave us this tribute to the 36 Chambers classic on "Enter The 37th Chamber". It's always interesting when a band is sampled by a Hip-Hop producer as part of a composition, and then another band interprets that new version.
A Tribe Called Quest & Busta Rhymes : God Lives Through
The original "God Lives Through" included the voice of Busta via a sample from Tribe's own "Oh My God" on the same album, but he wasn't actually on the track. As he says, he always wanted to rhyme on it and here he gets his chance! This version is from the Q-Tip and Busta mixtape "The Abstract and the Dragon", and here I've just gone with the Busta verse and then Phife's - which is the same as the original, hopefully you own it by now :)
Black Milk ft. Fat Ray and Elzhi : Sound Of The City
Detroit time! Black Milk covers the low end lovely with well-engineered kicks and bass driving this track along. The title track to his first solo LP is a worth headliner, and I always laugh at the shade thrown at Mike Jones at the end of the second verse!
Hall & Oates : Method Of Modern Love
A new one to me, but after reading recently that this was the song that inspired the hook to "Method Man", I took a listen and thought I'd play a snippet here. You hear the first eight bars looped up for a couple of minutes, then we let it go so you can hear the introduction of the chorus - then stop the track and merge into...
Wu-Tang Clan : Method Man (Home Grown Version)
...the tune that drew from it! This isn't even the version from "Enter The Wu-Tang", but an alternate version that was on the 12", and is even more raw and lo-fi than anything on the album. It sounds like it was recorded in a basement and probably was, and I'd bet that this was the original, later re-done for the LP. For the turntablist heads, this is the version Mista Sinista used for his killer juggle - solved a mystery for me!
Cypress Hill : How I Could Just Kill A Man
Classic Cypress! Back in the pre-internet days, some New Yorkers thought this crew were locals from the Cypress Hills housing project, but in fact they were from all the way over in Los Angeles. The first album is still my favourite after all these years, and this track was fierce - a hit without even an attempt to soften up for the radio. DJ Muggs layers up legendary breaks for the beat and even has a few bars on the mic at the start of the second verse, while B-Real spits memorable bars on the kill-or-be-killed lifestyle, and Sen Dog jumps in for the hook. Early 90s heat.
Slum Village (ft. Young RJ) : Nitro
Detroit in the mix again, with the 2009/10 lineup in full effect, along with family member Young RJ on the boards and rhyming as well. The beat actually has a lot of RZA feel to it, and I could easily have imagined this on one of the early Wu albums. No slacking on the mic either, everyone represents and make this a tune worth tracking down - I got it on the "Villa Manifesto" LP, but it's not on all versions so look out for that when buying.
Inspectah Deck : R.E.C. Room
I'd forgotten that it wasn't until six years after the release of "Enter The Wu-Tang" that we finally got a solo album from Inspectah Deck, but "Uncontrolled Substance" did eventually arrive - maybe it needed that incredible verse from the start of "Triumph" to create the momentum! I believe this was the lead single, a tribute to the rec room parties from the Wu's youthful days, with a characteristically Wu-Tang beat courtesy of True Master, who cooked up some great tracks over the years.
[DJ Premier] Gang Starr : Just To Get A Rep (Instrumental)
One of those tunes everyone either knows or really should! I think the 12" will have an instrumental on it, but this is taken from a white label instrumental version of the whole "Step In The Arena" LP.
Air Adam : 13th Chamber
I wondered if this was worth including, but if not now, then when? I recorded this maybe 10-15 years ago, and while some of the plain movie samples were just layered over the top from my DVD collection, everything else comes from the turntables! The bassline is a plain tone being modified with the 33/45 button and pitch slider, the drumming is all done with scratches, and then the kung-fu samples that were available on battle tool vinyl (no Serato back then!) were scratched over the top. This was my tribute to/version of Wu's "Wu-Tang : 7th Chamber - Part 2" from the first album, derived from a battle routine I once developed, and was on my "Sleight of Hand" mixtape - a few of you might still have it!
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
Check out this episode!

Clayray Closeout 2017
Time once again to reflect on a year of media consumption, heh.
Music - Artists
The Maine
Michelle Branch
B.A.P
Dashboard Confessional
Sam Hunt
Taeyeon
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness
Ed Sheeran
The All-American Rejects
Britney Spears
Honestly, the only reason The Maine is #1 on this list is because they have a lot of songs on Spotify, and when I see an artist in concert, I listen to their entire discography, and I must have let that go a few times through. I don’t particularly feel that strongly about them, to be honest, and couldn’t really sing back a song of theirs to you, so this is a dubious title.
As I said, I saw The Maine (as an opener) in concert, and I also saw Dashboard Confessional, Sam Hunt, and The All-American Rejects. I also saw Jesca Hoop, Brooke Annibale (Err, well I didn’t actually see her open, but I still listened to her discography anyway), Kawehi, Jean Michel Jarre, Emily Wells, Chris Janson, Maren Morris, The Social Animals, Baio, Sun Seeker, Canyon King, Soft Pyramids, Michael Christmas, Dutch Rebelle, Grace Mitchell, and St. Lucia. If some of these artists sound random to you, it is because I have a weakness for entering giveaways and so sometimes I end up at concerts for artists that I know nothing about.
My emo-ness was in full force this year. I went to a live band emo karaoke thing, and then of course I saw Dashboard Confessional/The All-American Rejects/The Maine/Social Animals.
I haven’t listened to that much K-Pop this year, despite BTS actually blowing up stateside, which K-Pop has been trying to do for ages. I only really paid attention to Taeyeon’s solo album and TS artists (which, Sonamoo’s been putting out some great releases lately).
Music - Albums
Hamilton OBCR
Dear Evan Hansen OBCR
Taeyeon - My Voice
Hamilton Mixtape
Michelle Branch - Hopeless Romantic
Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness - Zombies on Broadway
Ed Sheeran - ÷ (Deluxe)
Glass Animals - How To Be a Human Being
Sam Hunt - Montevallo
Dia Frampton - Bruises
I went to a bunch of musicals this year. The first half of the year, it feels like I went to New York almost every month. I saw Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Bandstand, Great Comet, Company (in the Berkshires), and I saw Newsies in theatres. Also Blue Man Group? Lol.
The rest of the albums on this list are all mostly artists that I’ve listened to for a long time and had a comeback. Michelle Branch, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, and Dia Frampton (back from Meg & Dia), for example, are artists I’ve been longtime fans of, and I listened to their new albums a lot in an effort to really like them, but unfortunately, while I liked these albums, I didn’t love them.
Also, I know I complain about Ed Sheeran to my friends, but I do actually like his music in general (though I like his earlier stuff better). It’s just that there are a couple of songs of his that just really really get me irate. “New Man,” as catchy as it is, is the outdated entitled male version of T. Swift’s “You Belong with Me.” But I really like “Galway Girl” and I enjoy “Eraser”!
Movies
Like last year, this is a subjective ranking and not numbers-based.
Get Out Absolutely brilliant. Who’d’ve thunk that Posh Kenneth, possibly the most useless character in Skins, would end up in such a knockout film.
Gook This year I started volunteering for the Boston Asian American Film Festival, and through it, I got to find a great community and watch some incredible films (Shout-out to The Apology, an excellent and important documentary. I conducted an Q&A with the director!). I had actually first seen Gook at the Boston Independent Film Festival, and met a few of the producers afterwards. It turns out that I went to college with one of them and lived in the same dorm for three years! Personal connection aside, Gook is artistic and emotional and at times, hilarious.
Lady Bird I actually just watched this on Friday haha, and I saw it with one of my college roomies, and she was the perfect person to watch it with. We both saw so much of our relationships with our mothers on the screen, and also just the state of being a high school girl. I had only seen Greta Gerwig in Frances Ha as an actor, and with such a great debut work as this, I can’t wait to see more from her.
The Big Sick I knew going into it that it was a movie about an interracial romance based on Kumail Nanjiani’s real-life love, but I somehow missed why it would actually be called the big SICK lol. But regardless, this was a touching and adeptly witty film that was such a delight.
Wonder Woman I mean, not a perfect movie, but I’ve been waiting for this movie. I wrote in my grad school paper about female superheroes in 2014 that this movie was supposed to come out, and so I felt even more invested in this. More female superheroes!
Note to self: Still really really wanting to see The Disaster Artist, Call Me By Your Name, and The Florida Project.
Television
I’m ashamed; I only watched like 5 new 2017 television shows, so I guess I have no choice which shows to highlight. There are a number that are on my list that I haven’t watched yet: Big Little Lies (I want to read the book first!), Legion, Dear White People (I thoroughly enjoyed the movie), Mindhunter, Godless, the Magic School Bus reboot (Still would love to work for it, so if anybody has any connections, let me know)...I think I just felt so tired through a lot of this year, and so I would find myself going back to good ol’ standbys.
The Handmaid’s Tale Considering, well, the state of the country and the world, The Handmaid’s Tale was a wrecking ball coming straight for your gut. Coupled with the fact that it’s set in Cambridge/Boston, it felt genuinely terrifying to me. I had read the book back in high school, but had forgotten much of the details. Incredible performances (Alexis Bledel and Samira Wiley!!!) really make the terror of it all really sink in.
Las Chicas del Cable This show contains practically all of the elements I enjoy in my television. Beautiful period costumes! Antique telephones! Independent ladies! A chance to practice my Spanish! And *SPOILER* in the second season, ~MURDER~. It’s not an excellent show, per se. It often falls on tropes and flimsy plotlines, but it is positively enjoyable.
13 Reasons Why I’m still not perfectly sure where I stand on this in terms of a developmental psychology/health point of view. I do think it is a dangerous, dangerous thing to be messing with the topic of suicide in the form of enticingly palatable and powerful television. And I recognize I was fortunate enough to be in a good place to watch this and be okay. I had read the book when I was younger, and so my ears had perked up in recognition upon hearing about this show. From an entertainment point-of-view, yes, this drew you in and was compelling. However, I really don’t think there needs to be a second season.
Riverdale The little I’ve seen of the second season feels a little bit off-the-rails, but the first season was delectable. I love the dark take on the Archie-verse and I also love seeing heartthrobs from the 80′s as the grown-ups. I also just love a good teen drama.
Introvert Boss I really wanted to like this. It has Yeon Woojin! And also Hyosung! And has to do with mental health! But it unfortunately fell flat and became a bit of a tangled, convoluted mess. I didn’t actually watch any other Korean dramas this year, except for a little bit of the Korean Criminal Minds. I need to get back into watching some K-dramas.
Some great shows returned as well this year: Search Party, Master of None, Stranger Things, Superstore, Black Mirror, Skam, The Good Place...And Insecure, bias aside (It’s Issa Rae’s production company that had the contest of which I became a semi-finalist earlier this year).
I was on a cruise with my family for the holidays, and television options were limited, but I did watch a lot of in-depth pieces on Al Jazeera, like about sand and Chinese embroidery and such...
I have been continuing (or starting!) my watch-from-the-beginning’s for several shows as well. Gilmore Girls is still my gym show, and It’s Always Sunny was my doctor’s appointment show, but that’s not on Netflix anymore. So now I just watch Suits at the doctor’s. The Wire has become my plane show, as I decided it wasn’t my gym show. (I’m not sure if the plane is much better of a venue, but oh well) I’ve also started watching from the beginning Parks and Rec, Mad Men, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and I finally finished Pushing Daisies. Which I absolutely loved.
Alrighty, I have now egotistically reflected on my tastes of the year. Onto another year of entertainment!
