[One Piece Headcanons] OP Boys -> when some guy asks them if you're single
Part One | Part Two
Characters: Luffy, Sabo, Killer, Shanks, Mihawk
Tags: reader-insert, gender-neutral reader, overprotective, possessive, jealousy, violence
Author’s Note: Thanks for all the likes and reblogs. I appreciate all the love! 💖
MONKEY D. LUFFY
Easily gets distracted. The guy asks about you, and all Luffy can think about at that moment is spending time with you.
The question doesn't process in his head until the man asks it several times.
And even then, Luffy misunderstands.
He doesn't mean to make the other guy jealous, but he so does.
"You're their Captain, right?" the man addresses the straw hat pirate.
"Yup! I'm Luffy, the man who will become the Pirate King!"
"Right... I was wondering, y'know, as their captain... Are you aware if they have a special someone?"
"They? Oh - they're amazing, aren't they!" Luffy compliments you, ignoring the man's question, "I'm actually supposed to be helping them with their training! Maybe I should do that right now, huh?"
"No - That's not what I asked. I mean, do you know if they have a special someone?" The man attempts to steer the conversation back to his intended topic.
"Special... someone?" Luffy's eyebrows furrow in confusion before comprehension sets in, "Ah, I get it! Their crew! Their crew is special to them!"
The man looks at Luffy in disbelief, "No! That's not what I meant-"
Before the guy can get his point across, Luffy extends his rubber arms to fling himself across the island, directly crashing into your unsuspecting body.
"Luffy - what!?" you shout in surprise.
Luffy responds by wrapping his arms around you in a full-body hug, his signature 'shishishi' laughter ringing in your ears.
From across the island, the man observes your exchange with the straw hat pirate, disappointment and jealousy etched into his face.
SABO
He’s an absolute troll.
Messes with the guy by pretending to be clueless.
Ends up acting like a seemingly psychotic, overly possessive boyfriend. He's not. Trust him.
"Are they what now?" Sabo fights off the smile threatening to spill from his lips.
"Are they single?" the man repeats for the third time.
"Sorry, I can't hear you," Sabo motions to his ear, giving it a gentle tap, "I have trouble hearing. Can you please repeat that?"
The man's eyes soften in pity as he repeats the same question for the fourth time.
"Is who single?" Sabo asks again, appearing to make every effort to understand the guy's question.
The man clarifies another time. But before he can tell the blond Revolutionary to forget about it, Sabo perks up in feign recognition.
"Oh! Are they single?"
"Yes! You got it," the man exclaims, satisfied that his question finally got through.
Sabo taps his chin in thought, "Not that I know. Though I heard rumors that the guy they're with is a really fearsome man. Not someone you want to mess with."
The guy deflates at Sabo's response, "Are they now? They a pirate or a Marine... or something?"
"Mmm... Something like that," Sabo's fingers tap against the table in front of him, gloved hands obscuring the flames beneath his fingertips, "Ever heard of the Revolutionaries?"
The man nods in acknowledgment. "Rumors and the like. Never seen them myself, though."
"Same here," Sabo says absentmindedly. He motions for the other guy to lend him an ear, leaning over for a whisper.
"I would watch myself if I were you. Don't want to anger a group of strangers you don't know much about."
The man flinches away at Sabo's warning - or threat; the man wasn't sure. Sabo gives him a friendly smile in return, convincing the other guy that it may have just been a well-meaning warning between two close friends.
"G-gotcha. Thanks," the guy abruptly stands up, motioning toward the exit, "I better get going."
"It was nice to meet you, friend," Sabo calls out, his friendly smile morphing into a sinister one at the man's retreating figure.
KILLER
The definition of cool, calm, and collected.
Immediately becomes suspicious of the other man for asking about you.
Puts-thinking-cap-on.gif.
What does this strange man want with you? Why did he ask Killer in particular? What would this man do if you were already taken? Would he still try to pursue you?
Spends some time pondering but concludes that action needs to be taken.
Investigates your unwanted suitor and discover their malicious intentions.
In the end, Killer's cautiousness pays off.
Any chance they're single?
"..."
The Supernova's silence disturbs the other man, his eyes settling on the crowded room in makeshift comfort.
The sound of a gruff voice startles the guy into focus, body twitching in anxiety when he looks into the Massacre Soldier's expressionless mask.
"I don't know them," Killer says with finality.
It was impossible to read the Supernova's true disposition. His body appeared relaxed enough; arms splayed out in front of him in a civil manner. If it weren't for Killer's daunting presence and notoriety, the man would think that this blond-haired guy was your average pirate. For now, he had no choice but to conclude that Killer was telling the truth.
"Okay... Never mind then," the man awkwardly responds, leaving the tavern in displeasure.
- - - - - - - - - -
A masked figure looms over the inn you were resting at, sharp blades glinting under the moonlight. The Massacre Soldier himself was on guard tonight, eyes trained on the familiar body of the man who disturbed his peace earlier in the night.
Before your unwanted suitor can enter the lodge, Killer pulls him by the lapels, swiftly dragging the man into the back of the building - out of sight from prying eyes.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," Killer says, muscled arms encircling the man's throat in warning.
The man clutches at the knife tucked underneath his coat and wildly swings his weapon at his assailant.
With little effort, Killer disarms and knocks out his opponent, searching the man's unconscious body for clues to his motive. Killer pulls out a slip of paper from the man's pocket and unfolds it. There's no mistaking it - a copy of your bounty poster - the price of your head neatly printed underneath your name.
"Tsk, should've known you were up to no good."
Another body to add to the Massacre Soldier's list.
SHANKS
Proud boyfriend™ alert.
He loves to gush about you. The fact that someone recognizes how beautiful and amazing you are - he's thrilled.
Shank's constant praise of you begins to wear down on the guy; he gets the message that the red-haired pirate is implying - to leave you alone.
Shanks flashes a lazy grin at the man beside him; attention renewed at the mention of your name. "Gorgeous brain and body, what's not to love, aye?"
Your potential suitor nods in agreement.
Shanks looks past the man and makes eye contact with you. You were happily conversing with his crew, enjoying their company at the local tavern while in town to replenish some supplies for the upcoming journey.
The red-haired pirate winks in your direction, and you fluster under his flirty gaze. Shank's eyes twinkle in amusement at your shy demeanor.
The man across from Shanks looks back and forth between you and the red-haired pirate; his mouth opens and closes at the implication of your relationship.
"That one's mine," Shanks answers the man's unspoken question, waving over the barkeeper for another round of drinks, "But I'd love to tell you more about them."
DRACULE MIHAWK
The only classy one.
Doesn't take offense to the question, doesn't beat around the bush, and doesn't threaten the other guy for asking about your relationship status.
If the other man has bad intentions, Mihawk will know. And he will take action.
His entire being is enough to intimidate most people, after all.
A-are they single?
Mihawk casts an uninterested glance at the man standing a few feet away from him.
Nowadays, there were only a handful of people who dared approach the World's Greatest Swordsman - the Marines and Shanks.
Rumors were circulating that the former Warlord had been traveling the seas with you - that the normally lone-wolf pirate had acquired a companion to accompany him in his seafaring journey.
Oh, how clueless they were.
"Yes, we're in a relationship. Them and I," Mihawk states, taking a refined sip from his wineglass.
"I-I see. Thank you," the man bows before briskly running in the opposite direction, away from the black-haired pirate's piercing golden eyes.
The next day, Big News Morgan publishes your relationship with the infamous pirate for all the world to read.
Mihawk's eyes widen imperceptibly at the newspaper clutched in his hands.
Maybe this is for the best, he thinks. If there's anyone who can keep you safe, it's him.

Time
Pairing: Sanji x F!Reader
Summary: Time is such an essential variable for a pirate cook like you. But outside cooking, you try your best not pay attention to it, most especially when it comes to the past. And yet because of the unpredictability of the Grand Line, you’ve come across someone from your past who you desperately wanted to forget. This incident makes you realize that despite how much time passes, sometimes feelings don’t really change.
Song reference/inspiration: Don’t You by Taylor Swift
Word Count: 2.4k
A/N: It’s done! It’s finally done! I had this idea for quite some time now and I’m finally done with it. Imagine my relief. 😌 I liked how this turned out! But please let me know your thoughts about it… 🥺👉🏼👈🏼
Tumblr media
There are a lot of oddities in the Grand Line. Among the concepts that are too complex to be explained are the drastic changes in the weather, the crazy magnetic fields of islands, and devil fruit powers.
What doesn’t change is the concept of time. In all technicality, time is what the clock reads. And regardless of your location inside or outside the Grand Line, it’s set on stone. There’s sixty seconds in a minute, sixty minutes in an hour, twenty four hours in a day, seven days in a week, and so on. It’s a fact that’s definitive, irrefutable, and beyond dispute.
And as a cook of the Kid Pirates, time is one of the essential variables, alongside temperature, in bringing dishes to life. That much you learned and mastered from the years you’ve been observing chefs in a certain restaurant in East Blue before you ran away to the South.
However, outside the kitchen — or to be more precise, outside cooking — you don’t pay too much attention to the time and dates, similar to your Captain, Kid.
You and your Captain would need Killer to inform you about preparing banquets and feasts for birthday celebrations for crew members, or to remind you of other important dates.
While you’re completely capable of keeping track of time, you didn’t want to and wouldn’t bother. What’s the point, really? It’s just that you didn’t want to be reminded of just how long since you ran away from the chefs who took you under their wing. You didn’t want to be reminded of just how long since you’ve last seen a certain curly-browed cook who you fell in love with but unfortunately got turned down from.
You’re entirely fine by saying it’s been a while since you’ve last seen those people. There isn’t any need to label a precise quantity of time since that moment in your life. It’s all in the past, and you have long learned to keep yourself busy so as not to be reminded of them in any way.
After all, remembering them always leads to pangs straight to your heart, and as a member of the Kid Pirates, it’s highly discouraged to wear your heart on your sleeve and show vulnerabilities like that.
Since leaving Baratie, you moved along with your life. You worked at a local restaurant in South Blue and somehow ended up meeting Kid and Killer. With Eustass Kid being impressed with your skills in the kitchen and the air of authority you exude while working, he demanded you join their crew. And in all honesty, it didn’t take too much convincing on their part as you too wanted to travel the world, and perhaps find All Blue, a dream you shared with the man you fell in love with.
Pledging loyalty to Eustass Kid is one of the decisions you could never regret. Ever since joining the crew, they have become masters of being subtle in their ways of showing they all care for you. And it’s only evident by the way they’re all overprotective of you (even if you’ve pretty much mastered self defense and the art of using a gun) simply because among the group of brutes, you looked like a lone flower — splendid, precious, and delicate. And due to that, traveling the seas with the Kid Pirates is particularly enjoyable for you; dangerous, sure, but enjoyable nonetheless.
On account of the unpredictability of the Grand Line; more precisely the New World, you have learned to always be ready to face anything. But maybe you aren’t as prepared as you thought you are.
Because somehow, in between gathering food supplies alone for the crew and fighting against a group of Marines who found you, you came face to face with the cook you desperately wanted to forget.
And to make matters much worse, when you quite literally bumped into him, you’ve already been shot twice by the Marines, leading you to lose your consciousness right in his arms.
For some reason, with how huge the Grand Line is, you have never taken into consideration the probability of meeting him once again. And this unpreparedness unsettles you right away. So when you wake up in the Straw Hats’ sailing ship, all bandaged up and weak from the loss of blood, you’re quick to show hostility as a defense mechanism.
But that facade doesn’t last long, your mask easily slipping after a day with the crew, showing your naturally gentle and sweet side to everyone except to a certain man named Sanji. Ultimately, it’s quite impossible for you to remain hostile and aggressive in the presence of such nice and hospitable characters, especially when they kindly offered to drop you off to the next island and allowed you to contact Kid to let him know about your predicament.
You do, however, isolate yourself from the Straw Hats as much as possible. The only time you allow yourself to be in everyone’s presence is during meal times. As a chef, you know well enough that food is at its best when served right away and eaten in the presence of company.
But you aren’t dumb. You know the dishes served by Sanji aren't purely coincidental. With just one look at the table, you could easily recognize all of your favorite meals — meals that reminded you of the days when you had fallen in love with him. It’s blatantly obvious that some of the foods on the table are made especially for you.
This is where your reservations come in. After all, the reason why your favorite foods were your favorites was because they’re what Sanji used to cook when you’re upset. And because of your feelings for him, the food would always make your heart full and happy. And to be honest, you didn’t want to remember that feeling.
Moreover, you didn’t want to give Sanji the impression that everything’s fine between the two of you. You also didn’t want him to think that you’ve forgiven him for turning you down, and proceeding to step on your heart by letting you watch him flirt with other girls.
If you were any other person, you probably wouldn’t even touch the meals he made to prove these points. But you’re a cook, and it’s against your morals to let food come to waste. The most you can do so as not to give Sanji the upper hand is to stop yourself from eating as much as you usually would, regardless of how delicious the food is.
You can tell it’s working from the way Sanji’s lips are slightly downturned as he watches you only take a nibble of your favorites while consuming the other meals that are meant for the other crew members. This goes unnoticed by the others though; they’re too enamored with the new variety of dishes on the table to even pay attention.
This goes on for a few meal times, but you have to admit that despite only taking a few bites of the dishes you used to love, they’re still capable of bringing back the memories of your past with Sanji, maybe not in full force, but it’s enough to disconcert you.
On your third day with the Straw Hats, after seeing him fawn over Nami and Robin, the tension between you and Sanji becomes a little too overwhelming for you to the point where you feel the need to hide in the crow’s nest to calm yourself down.
When you get there, you’re surprised yet relieved that Zoro isn’t there. You instantly take a seat facing the window. You relish the silence. But it’s only momentary, broken by the sound of someone knocking on the door.
Rude as it may be, you don’t acknowledge the person. Whoever it is still enters the room anyway.
“Y/N-chan, can we talk?”
You hate the way your heart starts wildly pounding again just by the mere sound of Sanji’s voice.
“I thought we’ve established the fact that I don’t want to talk to you,” you respond coldly.
This doesn’t discourage Sanji though. “If you don’t want to talk, that’s fine. But will you please listen to me?”
You frown, but you remain silent. Sometimes, most especially at times like this, you wish you could hate him. But that’s just something you can’t do no matter how hard you try.
He takes your silence as a good sign, so he sits himself beside you.
You aren’t looking at him, but you can feel his eyes on you. This lasts for a few minutes, Sanji just gazing at you without uttering a word.
You didn’t mean to count, but by the second minute of silence, you snap. “What? I thought you wanted to tell me something? Why aren’t you talking?”
He looks away and clears his throat. “Sorry about that. I didn’t mean to stare. It’s just… it’s been five years since I last saw you.”
His statement takes you by surprise. Has it already been five years since you left Baratie? And more importantly, was Sanji keeping count?
For whatever reason, Sanji chuckles. He faces you once again and smiles, “It’s been five years but you still look as gorgeous and radiant as ever.”
As always, Sanji has a way with his words. The compliment makes your heart beat impossibly faster. But you know you shouldn’t fall for his words. “Sanji, don’t. Let’s not go there,” you say with a sigh.
He visibly deflates at your response. And it makes you want to take back what you’ve just said. “What have you been up to?” He tries asking, his voice low enough you almost don’t hear him, as if this conversation hurts him just as much as it pains you.
You didn’t really plan on responding. The agreement was to let Sanji do the talking and you do the listening, but you can see his sad expression in the corner of your eye and it tugs your heartstrings a little bit so you reply, “I’m a pirate now.”
“You are?” He perks up upon hearing you responding. “Who’s your captain?”
You finally face him, wanting to see his reaction. “Eustass Kid.”
His face instantly contorts into displeasure. “Kid?” He asks once again. When you nod your head, there’s a different look on his face, almost like he’s angry or he’s annoyed. “Why Kid? Don’t tell me he forced you to do it?! That bas—”
But before he could even finish his sentence, you pull out your gun and point it at his head.
He’s taken aback by your speed and the look of determination in your eyes.
“Watch your words, Sanji.” You cock your gun. “Just because we’re on speaking terms doesn’t mean I won’t shoot you. You can call me bad names if you want, break my heart like you did, but if you say one more bad thing about my captain, I won’t hesitate on putting a bullet through your head,” you threaten.
Sanji gulps, raises his hands in surrender, and nods his head.
Yet you pull the trigger anyway. Sanji could only close his eyes once he sees your finger move.
But there’s no impact at all. When he tentatively opens his eyes, he sees you putting away your gun in its previous location.
You’re well aware that you have no ammunition left, having used them all up when you fought the Marines, but sometimes even an unloaded gun is enough to intimidate and scare someone into submission, and to get your point across.
Silence envelopes the crow’s nest after that incident. Sanji isn’t afraid of you per se, he’s just a little bit surprised with the change in your attitude.
For a moment the thought of you having feelings for Kid passes through his mind, and he internally gets upset with the thought. In fact, he hates it but he doesn’t let it dissuade him from trying to make amends with you.
He allows you to have a couple more minutes of silence. But when he has decided that it’s time for him to talk, the first thing he blurts out is, “I missed you a lot when you left.”
His confession breaks something in you. You didn’t like the way you equally liked and hated hearing this from him. “Sanji, don’t…” your voice cracks and your vision blurs. “Don’t smile at me. Don’t ask me how I’ve been. Don’t you say you’ve missed me if you don’t want me. Don’t get my hopes up, because you don’t know how much I love you still. Just don’t…”
“Y/N-chan…” he calls out to you, his hand hesitantly reaching out to you. And when you don’t protest, he pulls you into a hug, rubbing his hands gently on your back.
Sanji hates seeing you like this — so defeated and broken, all because of him. He didn’t like seeing you cry. But right now he knows he needs to explain himself. “I liked you too back then…”
You pull away in shock after hearing his words, wiping the tears in your eyes. Just as you’re about to ask why he turned you down, he continues, “But the old geezer was against it. He says if I couldn’t stay loyal to you, then I’d only hurt you more and make matters worse.”
What Sanji was saying makes a lot of sense. Zeff highly respects women, which was why he couldn’t turn you away when you had nowhere else to stay. And knowing Sanji, you can tell just how much he looks up to him, despite him always talking back to the older chef. It’s only natural for him to heed Zeff’s words.
“I was young and I didn’t think I was ready yet, so I turned you down as gently as I could… and when you said it was fine, I was so relieved. But then you left without a word and I… I just… I really did miss you all these years.”
“What about now?”
“Huh?”
“Do you still… like me?” You ask meekly.
Sanji smiles, which makes you feel butterflies in your stomach. “I do, but…”
You sigh sadly, “But?”
He looks over the window, and you follow his gaze. The sight of Luffy being chased around by Usopp on the deck welcomes you. “My loyalty still lies elsewhere.”
You immediately understand what he’s trying to say, and for the first time since you arrived in the Thousand Sunny, you genuinely smile. “Someday, then?”
Sanji faces you once again, and reciprocates your smile. “Yeah. Someday.”

Summary:
You’ve felt Sad before. But lately, it’s been getting worse these days. Nothing has helped you pull yourself out of this slump. You tried doing anything that your fellow crewmates recommended, but nothing worked. Not even the most basic of tasks helped get you out of this slump.
So….You turned to Other Stuff. You didn’t care whether or not drugs or alcohol wouldn’t actually help you. You just wanted to forget about your Sadness for a while...Even if it was just for five minutes.
-----------------
Warning(s):      Drug Use[Future chapter(s)], Alcohol consumption[Future chapter(s)], Depression, angst, mentions of suicide attempts[Future chapter(s)], mentions of self-starvation, eventual smut[Future chapter(s).]

Author’s Note: Been feeling really down lately...So, I’m using my crush with Law to my advantage to fight against my intrusive thoughts. Sorry if this starts becoming too much for you to read. Feel free to block my tag “a helping hand” to avoid triggers~!
You counted the amount of days you’ve been feeling Sad like this. And you counted 32 days straight...32 days of constant sadness, some days were bad, other days where so bad that you never even got up unless somebody came to fetch you for Law. Today was no exception to those extremely bad days. By the time you had woken up, it was already past Noon, and everybody had gone to the Island that they'd reached to stock up on supplies for their next voyage. Groggy as all hell, you slowly woke up, your body felt extremely heavy and Hot...Too hot almost, you just ignored the heat though and went to change into your usual casual but nice looking attire for the day, slapping on a baggy, unclean tank-top, your baggy sweatpants that you’ve been wearing for the past month, and then your running shoes.
You lazily pulled yourself together before heading out to the main dining room area in the hopes of grabbing some food, only to pause and remember that the main reason why the ship wasn’t moving was because they went to stock up on food. “No food huh?....Guess I’ll starve.” You mumbled to yourself, grabbing at least a bottle of water before heading out so it made it look like you’ve eaten.
Gulping down half of the bottle already, you reached the main lobby area of the ship, seeing the same crew members that followed Law, they were just muttering amongst themselves quietly, they sounded more excited than usual to you, “Too Loud...” You thought to yourself as you decided to head outside for some fresh air rather than mingle with the crew today. Despite the fact that you barely know any of them aside from Bepo and Penguin for the most part, as they’re the ones that tend to stick to Law’s hip like lost kittens.
Once you were outside of the ship, you noticed a lot of boxes that started showing up out of the blue, you then noticed that you had walked into a Room created by Law. ....Right, I forgot we were gathering more supplies….” You thought as you took a look at what he’d gotten for his crew, and possible extra’s in case they ran into the Straw Hat’s as they’re still in an Alliance of sorts from what you can recall. You yawned before going forward while crawling down from the top of the Submarine, placing your water bottle down on a closed box nearby so you could at the very least, help put the stuff back.
Before you could move anything though, Bepo noticed you were awake, “Oh!? Y/n san’s finally awake!” he shouted while pointing towards you lifting a box to give it to another, much more stronger crew member to carry it down into the ship for you. Law noticed that you were trying to help despite how late you’ve slept in recently. “Morning.” he says as he patted your head gently while climbing up into his ship for the day to get stuff organized. You didn’t do much, you were just helping lifting boxes but even so, that got you a “Morning” from your captain, usually he would just glare at you then turn to finish whatever he was doing. Shrugging it off, you continued to help out until your arms felt like jelly, being the weaker one out of the group, you were better off at organizing stuff rather than carrying it.
As the crew gathered in the main hallway, Law looked around to see that stuff wasn’t  organized like he thought it was, “Tch...Dammit. Everything seems to be mis-matched and out of order. That’ll be a pain in the ass to deal with.” He looked as he opened the boxes, to find that the only things that were separated was Produce and Weaponry (Guns, Gun Ammo etc.)  You looked at his irritated face and then spoke up, “I can organize things for you, Law.” You offered, bending down to be at his height level to look at the current box of mis-matched random items..Some of them seemed to be medicine and bandages, while others looked like paperwork stuff. “You know how to organize Y/n? I highly doubt it seeing your room is a mess.” He bounty states, commenting on your messy room. You chose to ignore that though and stood up, “I can organize shit! I may need help though.” You asked him, hoping he’d order the crew to help you organize this stuff better for him while he did other stuff that needed his attention. “....Fine….You can take charge in organizing this Mess...Bepo will come with me to navigate us to the next Island….” He pauses then glares at the crew that didn’t seem to accept the fact that the weakest member of the ship was the one bossing them around, “And the lot of you...Listen to y/n! The faster this shit gets organized, the faster we set sail got it? I don’t want to be bothered by random bullshit complaints because a chick’s bossin’ you around.” he bluntly comments again, making the crew stiffen in slight fear of his booming voice that echoed the room.
After three straight hours of organizing, replacing, and relabeling items, you sat down on the nearest surface your body could reach. That was a daunting task to do considering you’re not in the best mindset right now. Ikkaku helped out with part of the relabeling the items that seemed to either have a missing label, or have the wrong one altogether. “Well, that went by fairly swiftly..” Penguin commented while placing the final box with the rest of them before flopping on the floor, completely drained from helping out with the heavy lifting. You sat there, now regretting not at least grabbing a small thing to eat before starting this heavy workload, your stomach growled softly, which made you flustered. “Hungry huh?” Ikkaku commented while standing up again to get back to work, “Yeah….Maybe just a little bit.” You admit, but didn’t mention that you didn’t eat anything for breakfast or lunch either.
Part of the crew split off after organizing stuff for you to get started on dinner as it was already close to 7pm. You decided to go back to your room until dinner was ready. The comment about how messy your room was started to repeat in your head until you had flopped onto your bed, groaning in annoyance, “Why does he have to be so right.”
You then fell asleep through dinner. Your mental state was getting even worse than what it already was.
--------------------------------------
You didn’t mean to sleep right through dinner. You even had set up an alarm to wake you at least 25 minutes before so you had time to wake up, get dressed quickly, then head out to the dinning hall...But, by the time you had woken up, it was 7:30am the next morning, at least from what your clock had told you. You couldn’t tell since the ship was under water again, having set sail for the next Island which would take them a while to get too. You groaned, cursing as you slowly got up again and then sighed. Your eyes weren’t even fully open yet but you still got up regardless to go eat something for today.
You paused before standing up from the bed, hearing muffled whispers against your door, you thought you were hallucinating and just shrugged it off. But, the whispers kept happening, they started to get louder and from what you can tell, the whispered voices seemed to be arguing about something. “--No! You wake her up! The last time I woke her up, she threw her pillow at my face in irritation!” A male voice echoed, you instantly recognized who it was...Groaning, you yawned as you stood up to head outside to see why Bepo and whoever else was there, was arguing right in front of your door so early in the morning. They /know/ your not a morning person, so why the fuck are they here?
Unlocking the door, the two crewmates flinched to see you after being asleep for so long. “O-Oh! Hello y/n san! Good morning!” Bepo stuttered out, nervous on why you look so deadly. It worried him that you looked like this. “.....Morning……” You weakly responded, noticing that Ikkaku was holding a tray of food for you..A lot of it too, it looked like they were some of your favorite meals they had prepared. “Sorry to bother you y/n san but, we thought you were sick, so we brought you some food! We made sure to bring a lot of it because you missed out on food yesterday.” She said, pointing out that she noticed you were hungry yesterday. You internally smacked yourself, forgetting that you never ate a single thing yesterday. Reaching out for the tray of piled on food, you took it to place it on the small desk you had then turned to face them, “Thanks for the food.” You said weakly, as you closed the door to your bedroom.
“Don’t thank us.” Ikkaku said before turning to head the other way, “Thank Law. Since he was the one that noticed you weren’t at dinner last night.” She said before leaving with Bepo following her….Haring that line, just made you feel more guilty. You had worried your captain to the point of him making enough food for you to eat for the day, despite the fact that you’re just not Hungry. Sighing, you still decided to eat some of the food in front of you, even if it was just in small bites here and there. Even so, you couldn’t finish that much. Setting aside, you flopped back on the bed.
The next few hours had passed. You woke up to loud banging against your door, startled awake, you groaned as you got up, “Alright already, I’m awake! Sheesh!” You yelled, then started to mutter to yourself, “Don’t start snapping back y/n-ya.” Law replied, which made you freeze up. You should’ve expected that he was the one that would start banging on the door next, considering he’s your captain, and a doctor. Opening the door to see that he was scowling, he looked down at you, a sting of guilt punched your throat, which made you start to stutter out a weak response to his glare. He didn’t respond back however, all he did was walk into your room and started turning on the bedroom lights for you, seeing that you’ve done nothing but stay in the dark for the last 72 hours.
“Three days.” he starts off after he clicks on your nightstand lamp before turning back to glare down at you, “it’s been three days since you’ve been cooped up in here by yourself.” A low growl of irritation leaked his throat, which caused you to flinch again. A brief moment of silence filled the room before you could respond, “....I’m Sorry.” You simply said while staring at the floor, feeling both guilty and nervous on what he was going to do next. Before you could respond, all he did was lift you with one arm over his shoulder, and then bring you to his office for a small Chat about your Mental State.

Synopsis: You’re the newest member of the Straw Hats, and it’s taken a little while for the rest of the crew to warm up to you. All except her... Nico Robin. But when the pursuit of your talent happens to cross paths with her own interests, that all changes... Now later down the line, you want to use your camera to spend a little quality time with Robin. If only the rest of the crew would stay out of the way...
Author’s Note: This is my first ever large fic (something over a thousand words) and I’m so happy with how it came out! It took a while to complete but I hope y’all like it!
The devil child: Nico Robin. One would think from that epitaph that she would be a monster; someone with large horns or something that would constitute “devil child.” But nope, she is the last of her kind, a caring, kindhearted and often morbid person. She is a tall, thin and intelligent being, traits fit for an archeologist.
You knew the first day you had seen her that something special was going to happen between the two of you. Your new captain, Luffy, had admired your resolve and had pretty much demanded (in his own special way) that you join the crew. You had always had a dream of taking pictures of all the islands you could, to document the world just in case something happened. The crew welcomed you with open arms of course, but it seemed like the mysterious woman with long black hair and sunglasses was avoiding you at first.
It was no wonder she was avoiding you. It was when you had learned her past that it all had made sense. After speaking with the others over time, you had learned the truth; the horrible truth. She was the last of her people; the island of Ohara had been destroyed, her friends and family gone, and she had been hunted down just for the fact that she was the lone survivor. And then the water 7 incident; where she sacrificed her life so the rest of the straw hats could escape just because she didn’t feel she was worthy of their friendship. You could remember the first time she had learned of your skill. You had gotten off of the ship to explore an island. You thought back about that day…
The trees were lush and green as you traversed a windy path that led to a hill, looking for that one landmark that would help you remember the island forever. Walking along the stone pathway, you noticed that the ground was littered with these tiny pieces of metal that you were unaware of the origin or purpose of. Intrigued, you kept up your pace as you walked, seeing more and more chunks of this metal. You decide to pocket one of the smaller pieces in hopes of maybe getting an idea of what it was from, possibly through Franky or Usopp. Just in case, you decided to document your journey up the hill. Maybe there would be something that you missed upon first glance.
As you kept walking, you noticed less and less of the metal objects, and more tall grass and trees. Maybe the metal had been from some kind of outer fortification and you were now coming to an inner garden or the like. That hypothesis was soon tested as you came upon rising stone structures. Incomplete walls and archways were scattered in a manner you couldn’t make any sense of. Architecture was more of Robin’s area of expertise. Thinking of her, you brought your camera up to the hill to start finding good framing for a few snapshots. A place like this needed to be documented, and you weren’t going to wait for someone else to come do it. After wandering around and getting a few angles of the major structural remnants, you started to head back to the Sunny. On the way back you bumped into her by accident.
“Oh! Robin I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to bump into you, I must not have been looking where I was going.” You apologized profusely as she turned around and gave you a wide smile. “It’s okay, I’m just glad it wasn’t a group of bandits looking for hostages.” You were slightly confused by her comment but shook it off. “Hey Robin, I heard that you’re into archeology…could you possibly tell me what these buildings are?” With a wide eyed look of glee, she put her hands around your camera and with a nod you let her take it. “From what it looks like, it seems like it’s an open garden…some of the sides of the walls have poneglyph writing on them…it must be very very old, predating my family.”
Fast forward to now, where the two of you have become much closer than you ever thought you would, and certainly much happier. You’ve expressed many times how photogenic you think she is, and how much you’d like to get the chance to have her pose for a shoot. She never hesitates to tease you on what you might do with those photos, or just what sort of photoshoot it will really be, but you know she’s also flattered that you like her appearance to that degree. Finally you both have some free time and you set up your camera and a few outfits for her to wear. It was a warm day so most of the outfits she’s wearing corresponds to the weather.
“Hey Robin, why don’t you lean up against the mast and we can get a couple shots of you looking badass, okay?” “Yeah, that sounds good!” She saunters over to the mast and did a variety of poses; a squat, a lean, one with her arms crossed and even one with her Devil fruit, her arms dotted across the top of the mast, aiming down. “You want to try another outfit and then we can we can do some of you over the side, maybe looking wistful?”
Nodding, she heads over to her room to get changed into a different outfit; she always has a good sense of fashion and that’s something you’ve admired about her. Unbeknownst to you, you and your subject have attracted quite the bit of attention. Sanji has been discreetly watching the two of you, and Chopper and Luffy have been a bit confused, albeit intrigued to what you were doing. It looked like Luffy had a plan to cause some mischief; you don’t know what kind but you were not going to let him ruin your day.
Robin returns swiftly, having changed into a white dress with purple polka dots and matching lace at the bottom. She really does look lovely in that, you think to yourself. “Alright, you ready to take some more pictures?” She gives an enthusiastic nod and heads over to the side of the boat, resting her hands on the rails and looking off in the distance.
As soon as you try to take the picture, Luffy and Chopper giggle loudly, attacking Robin with a hug. Sanji emerges from where he was watching and takes the chance to put his head in her chest. Even though this shot was totally not what you were expecting, you could live with it. It makes good memories of you and your crew. With a loud shout, you alert the rest of the crew to what you are doing; Franky and Usopp come tumbling out of their workshops like something is wrong. Nami vaults over the railing, running over to the picture as Zoro complains about all the noise. And finally, Brook comes out from inside the galley to see what all the fuss is about.
“Hey all” you start. “I was doing a photo shoot with Robin when Luffy and Chopper photobombed me and I have a great idea! Why don’t we do a few group pictures to create some good memories?” For the most part, the group agreed; minus Zoro who was still grumpy from being woken up. Upon agreement, you begin to put everyone in a place before everything falls apart, and you decide to just let them pose the way they want. The smile on Robin’s face as she’s surrounded by her dear friends is an image you want to treasure forever. Fortunately, you can.

the reflection of the sun glistening on your thighs while you watched the wave currents crash together on this boring afternoon. sitting on top of the rock and staring at the ocean almost every day has been quite the hobby you picked up. sometimes you would stay until the moon came out, not caring about the time. it's been like this for about two years. every day you would come out to rocks and think about life. you were hoping to find a dream, but the more you sat on the rocks and did nothing; you still couldn't find one.
everyone has dreams. people want to be doctors, some people want to be teachers, some want to do something meaningful with their lives, but you? you weren't sure. ever since you were little, you never had a dream. you grew up searching for a dream and here you were at the [your age], still looking for a one. to you, it wasn't bad not having a dream considering you were still searching, but you knew that you couldn't run forever and had to stand your ground eventually.
as your eyes were fixated on the sea, you noticed a pirate ship coming towards the island. watching each member walk off the ship and stand at the entrance of the forest, you contemplated if you should help them out or let them figure out what they needed to do by themselves.
"heyyy!" a loud voice shouted, and you looked down and saw the stranger standing in front of the rock.
he wore a red button-down shirt that was open with a straw hat on top of his head, he also had an x mark shape on his chest.
"can you tell us where the closest restaurant is? we're hungry and we need to fuel up before we start restocking," his smile was big and bright.
"idiot," a woman with orange hair punched him on the head and he flew down on the ground.
"don't mind him, we were wondering if you could show us to the town so we can restock our ship. that's if you don't mind," she added with a smile.
you slowly climbed down the rock and made sure that you watched your step so you wouldn't trip. you looked at everyone and felt a little intimidated, their gaze was sharp while they had a serious look on their face.
"if you guys follow me, i could show you where you need to go," you cleared your throat and began to walk towards the town.
the straw hat crew looked amazed as they looked at every store they made eye contact with. this island was definitely different from the previous ones they've stopped at.
"luckily for you guys, everything you need is within close range so you won't be able to lose each other," you gave them a smile.
"nice, i can find some more parts for sunny,"
"i can find more cooking ingredients,"
"i can find more herbs and medicines,"
"i can find a new sword since this one is bad shape,"
you listened to all of them rambling on about what they needed and it made you curious about them.
"so, are you guys pirates," you stared at them while the man in the straw hat licked all of the plates in front of him cleaned.
"yeah, i'm luffy. i'm the captain," you were surprised that you understood what he said considering he still had food on his mouth.
"that's nami, sanji, zoro, franky, usopp, chopper, and robin. they are part of my crew," he added, taking a sip from his drink.
"what's your name?" nami gave you a curious look.
"i'm [name]," you gave them a smile as they nodded their head.
once they were done eating and getting everything they needed for their ship, they walked back to where their ship was docked. you couldn't lie, you were hoping that they were leaving so soon because they were an interesting group to be around.
"hey i have a question, i hope i'm not stepping over any boundaries," nami looked at you.
you nodded your head, letting her know that she could ask her question.
"why were you sitting up on top of that rock?" a small chuckle left your lips as you looked at the sea ahead of you.
"every day, i sit on top of the rock and stare at the sea, hoping to find my dream. everyone has a dream, everyone but me,"
"you don't have a dream?" luffy gasps, looking at you.
you shook your head, taking a seat on the log. the others took a seat around you as they had different facial expressions.
"i don't know what i'm supposed to be doing. am i supposed to be studying to be a doctor, or am i supposed to be a teacher, or am i supposed to be doing something meaningful with my life. every day i sit on those rocks and stare at the sea and try to figure what my dream is," you sighed, looking down at the ground.
"hey, it's fine if you don't have a dream. not everyone grows up having a dream and that's okay. you may not have one yet, but eventually, you will find your dream," robin gave you small smile.
"dreams don't have to come to you at a certain age, you can figure out your dream in your sleep. either way, don't beat yourself up about it," franky looked at you.
"once you experience something that's life-changing whether it's good or bad, a dream will come to you. it's all about your life experience and what you do, when you do something that you truly love, you'll find your dream," usopp spoke with a smile.
"so don't beat yourself up about it," sanji spoke, blowing the smoke out of his mouth.
"hey how about you join our crew?" luffy shouted, looking at you.
"we go on crazy adventures and maybe you'll find your dream on the next adventure we go on, so what do you say?" luffy looked at you with a small smile on your face.
you just met him and it hasn't even been a whole day, yet here he was asking you to join his crew. you could tell by his smile that he didn't have any malicious intentions, but still, would it be wise to join someone's cry that you didn't know? the others were staring at you as well, making you grow anxious.
you thought about what they said, and they were right. how were you going to find your dream if you never went out and took risks and ran away from your problems? you took a deep breath in before you spoke.
"i'll join your crew," the sound of them cheering and clapping their hands made you happy.
is this what it felt like having friends? especially ones that were willing to help you find a dream and be happy. all you knew is that you were excited to start your new journey and find your dream.

The weather was hot in Dressrosa, perhaps too ideal for a kingdom ruled by the living and breathing personification of evil, or maybe was it just another trick played upon the Straw Hat crew : how could this kingdom possess the weather of heaven and, paradoxically enough, be ruled by the new face of evil?
Although the sunny weather complimented the thoughts of relaxation, enjoying the sinful pleasures of life and whatnot, the reality drew a sharp contrast with these ideals— it was a hunt led on the scale of an island, a literal hunt, where the horn would only be blown once all of the targets will be taken down. It was a race against time, a permanent sword of Damocles was dangerously hanging over each member of the Straw Hat crew as a reminder that every action taken had a consequence— some reduced drastically the distance between the tip of the sword and their head, and others helped to deliver the last blow to their opponent.
Sword of Damocles or not, Zoro Roronoa could handle any situation with the help of his very own swords, that is… Almost all of them. His expertise regarding the art of fighting his opponents with both his most cherished and lethal weapons seemed like poetry in motion to the common eye— he was the living testimony of empiricism, each of his experience added yet another step-stone on the ramp to become the best swordsman alive.
Nonetheless, the legendary prowesses of his swords could not fix the deep wounds caused by the poisonous mix of emotional numbness and physical pain. His sole valid eye was entirely focused on your small form (or at least, from his point of view, it did seem smaller given the fact you were bending under the echoes of pain) caught in a whirlwind of distress. He should have trusted his guts, after all, trusting his instinct came as a second nature to him, and not let you face one of Doflamingo’s pawns on your own. Yes, the victory was yours, but was squirming in pain really worth having the bragging rights of a success?
Isolated in an alley, away from the preying eye of the Donquixote family, but certainly not isolated from the sounds of agony echoing from certain areas of the kingdom, you were left bruised and out of breath on the ground. Your palm was delicately covering the wound in your arm, while being careful enough to not apply to much unwanted pressure on it, your mouth was set agape, a position needed to allow several unsteady breaths to fall free from your lips in cascade. And although Dressrosa was moving under the rhythm of the cries of pain, the alley you and Zoro was stuck in was eerily silent, a form of silence imposed against your will, but perhaps was it because none of you knew what to say.
The wound was deep and blood was flowing a bit too freely out of the cut— you considered is a medal, Zoro saw it as a mark of inattention. His facial expression reflected almost too perfectly the vivid emotions rushing through his mind : a dash of sadness, a pang of guilt and a generous dose of anger. His brows were furrowed, teeth clenched, his eye never left your figure, he was hoping his stare alone could make you feel his rush of emotions.
« What the hell were you thinking? What’s wrong with you? You could have died if I hadn’t shown up at the right time! » Zoro barked, anger lacing his every word, you winced at the harsh tone of his voice.
« What the fuck was I supposed to do? Let you do all the dirty work and stand back in silence? Hell no! » You responded, with the same amount of volume and acerbity coating your voice.
« You knew damn well you couldn’t have beaten him on your own, why the hell do you have to be so reckless? » It was a rhetorical question coming from him, there was no answer, just the will to sting you where it hurt the most.
« Because I’m sick of you seeing me as some kind of person in distress, because I’m not! I had him right where I wanted and you let your savior complex get the best of you. I could have handled it on my own, I didn’t need you! » Now, now, talk about letting your emotions dictate your speech.
His eye widened in surprise, mostly because he was not expecting that such rage could have ever possibly takeover your wording, but he regained his composure almost immediately. His jaw felt tight as your haunting words kept repeating themselves over and over again in his head like a broken record.
« You don’t need me, hah? Fine by me, next time I’ll let you suffer on your own, and remember that you asked for it. »
Maybe you were right, maybe you didn’t need him. For the first time, he laid his eye elsewhere, he couldn’t muster the strength to look at you, nor stay close to you. And with that, Zoro had already made the decision to leave you in this alley.
Willing to mimic his actions and indirectly compete in this silent war of prides, you tried to get on your feet to go back to the Sunny. Your plan, however, did not match with the reality— as soon as you stood up, a cry of pain left your lips without warning, your knees gave up under the pressure and eventually you found your original position : sat on the floor. Zoro stopped abruptly in his tracks once this sound of torment connected to his eardrums. His pride yelled at him to continue on his way out, to leave you alone because you ‘didn’t need him’, but he was only a mere man to try resisting his pride.
« Don’t move, you can’t help being so damn reckless all the time, can you? » the anger lacing his words had faded away and instead, a hint of comfort replaced the former vivid emotion.
Zoro was back kneeling in front of you, his stare was once more focusing on you and you only, as it always has been. You, on the other one hand, couldn’t seem to gather enough strength to look elsewhere but on your wound, and oddly enough, the more you looked at it, the more it hurt. Why did it hurt? You ignored the real answer to the question, nonetheless, pearls of tears running down your cheeks, a sweet mixture of salt and guilty.
« Oi, oi, oi, what are you crying for? » You knew he didn’t mean to sound this harsh, but ‘Zoro’ and ‘delicate’ were oxymorons.
Your thumb was still brushing invisible forms near your wound, in a desperate attempt to ease the pain and distract yourself from Zoro’s acerbic words which had finally sunk in, it was similar to being caught in a whirlwind of pain without any escape. You couldn’t help these tears from falling free on your face, it was the aftermath of said whirlwind, and the consequences of regretting your poor choice of wording.
Zoro’s calloused fingers came right beneath your chin, forcing you to look elsewhere but on one of the many causes of your suffering, and instead, engage a new discussion. His attempt to earning an answer felt short against the deafening silence on your end, a silence, however, often broke by the sounds of your whimpers.
« I-… I shouldn’t have said that earlier. What I said about not needing you, I didn’t mean any of it. » You released a sigh you ignored you were holding, a manifestation that you felt a burden come off of your shoulders.
« Save your saliva and your breath, I got it. And even if you didn’t want my help, you’re not in a position to refuse my help right now.» A hint of a smirk was plastered upon his face as a sign of a silent victory against you.
Zoro was right, you had no choice but to give in to his help. His arms snaked around your knees and shoulders (while making sure not to enter in contact with your injured arm and let the wound free from any touch) and cradled your head against his chest in a modified version of a bridal carry. Perhaps, just perhaps, you should have accepted his offer to help you earlier on.
« Zoro? » You asked, your breath coming to crash against the skin of his torso.
« Mhm? »
« You’ve always been the person I needed, I was just afraid that you would get injured too. » A confession emanating from your heart, after all, you deemed this moment as the most adequate given the circumstances.
Said confession only comforted Zoro in the nature of the feelings he was holding in your regard, and also demonstrated that the nature of your anger was actually coming from a place of care and attention for him.
« I told you not to mention it. Besides, I’m never letting someone lay a finger on you ever again. » A victorious grin still plastered upon his facial features, this time, it wasn’t because he had won the argument against you, it was because he realized everything he had always wanted, everything he had always needed, was here in his arms.

Alright, friends, you know the drill by now. Here’s Part III of Sarcasticles’ overblown thoughts on sexism in One Piece. If you haven’t already, go read Part I and Part II before proceeding.
I promise after this I’ll be done. By hook or by crook, we’re getting through the point of the original question. To the Anon who originally sent the ask, sorry it took this long to get here, I hope it’s helpful.
Also, I allude to some very, very minor Wano spoilers, so if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing here’s your warning.
Characterization? I Don’t Know Her
What makes a good character?
I’ve spent an awful lot of time talking about character designs, when, funnily enough, it’s one of the aspects I pay the least attention to when it comes to deciding if I like how an author portrays their characters. I personally don’t care for fanservice, never have and never will. But unless it’s particularly egregious, I tend to ignore it because there are other factors I think are more important.
The secret sauce for building characters is hard to define, because a good writer can take a concept that has no right being any good and turn it into something incredible (Oda does this all the time) where bad writers will seemingly slot all the right information in the right holes and still have their characters come out of the developmental oven flat and under cooked.
One of the biggest buzzwords floating around these days is agency. Is a character active in their own story, or are they jerked around by the needs of the plot? Is their voice heard? Is their voice unique, or do they blend in with the background?
This is particularly important, because the term Strong Female Protagonist has been warped into shorthand for “girl who fights a lot and looks pretty doing it”. You can have a girl strong enough to lift mountains and still have her be a shit character. You can write a girl who’s main motivation is to get married and have babies with phenomenal depth. What matters is execution.
The Petition to Call A Group of Rescue Arcs a ‘Damsel’
Both Nami and Robin had to be rescued, their main arcs bearing similarities that are impossible to ignore. But these aren’t copies of one another as much as variations on a theme, and with the existence of Marineford and Whole Cake Island I think anyone would be hard-pressed to say that One Piece’s rescue arcs are a girl’s thing. At this point it’s a feature, not a bug.
Which makes sense given how fundamental the idea freedom is to the series. Hell, the first thing Luffy does after becoming a pirate is free Coby from Alvida’s tyrannical reign. Then he frees Zoro from an unjust authority that would have killed him had Luffy not intervened.
Notice a pattern here?
One Piece is written like Pachelbel Canon, in that a very simple core of ideas are repeated over and over with layers of complexity and nuance added over time, examining the same themes from every possible angle.
And when you look at the Four Big Rescue Arcs -- Nami, Robin, Ace, Sanji -- you’ll see that it’s Ace who’s given the least agency throughout his arc. Nami chose to hijack the Going Merry, repeatedly chose to push away the Straw Hats until she reached her breaking point, at which she chose to ask for help, with Luffy only intervening once she does.
Robin is a little less obvious, but during the post-Water 7 party chapters, Aokiji makes the interesting observation that Robin could have escaped CP9, but chose not to
Tumblr media
Remember that before Robin’s backstory was shown, Luffy specifically said he didn’t care if she wanted to die or not, so long as she was with the Straw Hats when she made her decision. No one bullied her into “I wanna live”. It was a choice she made of her own volition after realizing the depths the Straw Hats would go on her behalf.
I know there are people who disagree with me, but Nami and Robin are well-written characters. I’ve expounded enough on my reasoning both here and on my main that I don’t want to spend the time belaboring the point. What I do want is to note that Luffy wouldn’t be able to attain his dreams without them. Nami keeps them on course while also severing as a sort of moral compass for the crew -- remember she was the one who insisted on saving the giant kids at Punk Hazard -- while Robin’s ability to read the poneglyphs is what’s going to get the crew to Raftel.
Robin admittedly doesn’t have the same presence within the Straw Hat Pirates as Nami, but I would hardly call that sexism. Since Water 7/Enies Lobby she’s been pretty content to go with whatever Luffy says, and the fact that she’s literally quieter than anyone else in the crew means she doesn’t get as much focus. I think there could be more scenes with her using her specific skill set, like her investigations in Wano and the forensic anthropology scene in the pre-Jaya chapters, but I’m okay with her being a supporting character.
The East Blue Crew have consistently gotten the most focus of any of the Straw Hats. They are the core of the crew, something Oda admits in a roundabout way in the Color Walk where they all appear together for the first time in a color spread
Tumblr media
With the main cast as large as it is, not everyone is going to have the same amount of focus or development. Robin is given a unique voice within the story because she doesn’t overreact the way literally everyone else does. Through her silence, she stands out. I find there to be very meaningful character development when she feels comfortable enough with the Straw Hats to start calling them by name in Thriller Bark, relaxed enough with her friends to comitt her first facefaults in a series lousy with them in both Dressrosa and Wano.
In an ideal world, Oda would better rotate through his cast, much like how Brook was the unsung MVP on Whole Cake Island (where Nami was also excellent in a supporting role) but I don’t think people realize how hard it is to juggle almost a dozen different people in a story that’s bloated exponentially over time. To his credit, Oda has handled his expanding crew better than most writers.
I also find it hard to judge this aspect of the series because the manga’s not done yet. I don’t know how Robin and Nami will be used in the future. I mean, Robin never got a chapter title declaring her “The Seventh” which I find suspicious, so Oda could very well have events in store that completely turn our perceptions upside down. It’s impossible to say.
I will acknowledge that the lack of big fights is somewhat disappointing, but neither Robin nor Nami’s dreams revolve around them getting stronger. Robin doesn’t need to use her power to make people explode from the inside out, Nami doesn’t need to fry end-game bosses with her lightning stick. That’s simply not their narrative purpose. With the exception of Tashigi, I’ve found that the female characters advertised as fighters have lived up to their billing. Hancock came out of Marineford unscathed. Carrot’s sulong form was awesome, in the old-fashioned sense of the word. The whole climax of Whole Cake Island revolved around surviving Big Mom’s wrath. Not beating her, not fighting her, it took all the Straw Hats had to just survive. Once again you’re left with a number’s game where where there just aren’t enough female characters to even pretend things are balanced.
All said, I think if you’re going to complain about the lack of Robin fights then I think you also have to complain about the lack of Brook fights, and that’s just not something you hear about, especially after Whole Cake Island. You can’t have it both ways. Either there needs to be more even distribution of major fights throughout the entire crew, or you have to acknowledge that a character’s worth isn’t dependent on their fighting prowess.
One Piece is a battle manga, and I do think that it’s fair to criticize when a character isn’t allowed to fight when they’re perfectly capable of kicking ass. But it’s also an adventure story, and that opens up entirely new space for a character to occupy, and that’s where I think Nami and Robin (but especially Nami) really shine
That Moment You Realize Humor Isn’t A Universal Language
I’ve spent so much time defending Oda’s designs and characters that it might seem like I’m perfectly okay with everything that’s portrayed in the manga. To be clear, I’m not. If the messages and comments I’ve gotten over the past several days have taught me anything, it’s that many fans share the same sticking points I do, namely in regards to some of the gags.
I again want to be careful here, because I’m hardly an expert on Japanese culture and it’s really hard to tell if Oda writes his jokes because he thinks they’re funny, or if he thinks his audience will find them funny. I’m again going to default to somewhere in the middle, because if Oda truly found the perviness distasteful he probably wouldn’t have included it, and I’ve read enough SBS to know the guy likes his dick jokes.
First and foremost, one must address the culture gap. Japan ranks last among G7 nations on gender equality, In 2004 two-thirds of Tokyo women in their 20-30s reported to being groped while on public transport. There are numerous barriers that make it difficult for a woman to succeed either in the workplace or politics.
From what I can gather, some of these trends are reversing, albeit slowly and with great resistance. Contrary to what many people seem to believe culture is not always value neutral. And I say that as an American, recognizing there are plenty of things about my culture and country that are really fucked up.
But who gets to decide who’s right and who’s wrong?
When inside that kind of environment, that kind of culture, it’s a lot easier to understand how a character like Sanji can exist. It’s easy to understand why Momo shoving his face into Nami and Robin’s boobs might be played for laughs. It’s not an excuse, but an explanation. And with Sanji failing more often than not, being the butt of his own joke as he slowly turns into a parody of what he once was, one could almost say Oda is pointing those types of people and saying, “Look how pathetic this guy is. Now go laugh as he gets a nosebleed so bad he needs multiple blood transfusions in order to not die.”
I say almost, because Sanji is never condemned for his actions, nor does he learn from them. Instead you have this character who’s supposed to be one of the kindest characters in the series decide to immediately go peep on a woman’s bath house after gaining the power of invisibility.
Stay classy, Oda.
As distasteful as I find it, I don’t find fanservice to be an inherently evil thing that must be eradicated at all costs, and with Oda doing things like putting his entire cast, male and female, into skintight leathers you can hardly say that he’s excluding the men.
Everyone will have their line in the sand, and mine goes back to agency. When Nami did her Happiness Punch way back in Alabasta, that was of her own volition. When Nami and Robin dress in clothes that show everything but the nipple, that’s something they chose and feel comfortable in.
But when Smoker and Tashigi swapped bodies at Punk Hazard, Tashigi specifically asked Smoker not to strip, and he did anyway, opening her coat and removing her bra. This is especially egregious as Tashigi is one of the very few women in the series who is always shown wearing very conservative clothing. Oda specifically showed Tashigi getting upset at Smoker’s actions, and Smoker repeatedly refusing to listen to her.
That’s where I draw my line.
Some Final Thoughts I Couldn’t Fit Anywhere Else
Thought The First--Oda has an interesting habit of turning his most despicable, scummy pieces of flaming human garbage into the butt of the joke. Villains like Crocodile and Doflamingo are certainly evil, but it’s the idealized, cool type of evil that makes you almost admire them. There aren’t very many real-world Crocodiles, but just about everyone knows a Spandam, or an Absalom, or a Vander Decken. These kinds of villains aren’t scary because of their physical prowess, but their unyielding obsessions and the power they’re able to wring from the system, and -- surprise, surprise -- all three are either actively trying to be creepy sex pests or coded as such with the visual language of the comic.
And Oda turns them into a mockery.
While there are some who feel like not treating serious issues like sexual assault seriously are doing a disservice to people who have endured similar experiences I think there’s merit to turning them into a laughingstock. As someone much smarter than me said once, if an opinion cannot withstand mockery it’s revealed to be ridiculous, and these scummy-scum villains are certainly ridiculous.
Thought The Second--It’s hard to say how much sexism is a thing in-universe. Kuina is the only one who is explicitly told her dreams were impossible because of her gender, but with the recent reveal confirming that her family came from Wano, which in turn is based on Feudal Japan, it’s hard to say how widespread these beliefs are. Tashigi brought it up again at Loguetown and Bellemere specifically told her girls that they lived in an era where “girls needed to be strong, too”, but otherwise it’s not a topic that’s been explored in any depth
Thought The Third--The in-universe fetishization of mermaids has some implications that I think are unintended but worth discussing. Shirahoshi has a reputation of being one of the most beautiful women in the world despite not leaving her tower for over 10 years (she’s 16). Mermaids whose tails have split are worth less on the slave market than those whose are intact. Even Zoro erased Kokoro from his memory after meeting the more attractive Caime. It’s one of those odd things that when combined with the more obvious racism themes could have some unfortunate implications, and I think could have been avoided had Oda show a little more restraint with some of his jokes. Unintended consequences are still consequences.
Thought The Forth--There are many other instances throughout the series that people bring up with talking about sexism in One Piece. I feel like a lot of these can be explained away individually -- for example, both Belo Betty and Rebecca’s stripperific outfits were inspired by other media, the painting Liberty of the People and Red Sonja respectively; Lola chasing after an obviously abusive man makes a whole lot more sense when you meet Big Mom; Hancock’s love sickness could be seen as an emotionally stunted woman experiencing her first crush, etc., etc -- it’s when they’re all put together that they begin to read as “Problematic”.
It would be impossible to go over all these individually, but I tend to fall on the side of leniency. In the end, everyone has to make their own decisions based on their own values. I’m hardly unbiased, and my enjoyment for the series will undoubtedly make me look the other way when another might call the exact same incident The Worst Thing Ever. The thing is, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and most are convinced that theirs don’t stink. I include myself in that statement. In the end it’s a comic for kids. It’s supposed to be fun.
Thought The Last--I have spent entirely too much of my time writing this up, but in the end I guess I have to go back to what I said when I talked about my thoughts on Sanji: Everyone has their own personal line of acceptable bullshit, and for me Oda does more good than bad. Sanji specifically gets very little leniency from me because I don’t like a lot of the gross behavior Oda passes over as a joke. But the female characters themselves, generally speaking? They’re fine. There are other mangaka that have more equal male to female ratios or have women play more active roles in the story, but Oda does a lot better than most other shonen titles I’ve read.
It’s okay to be critical of media you enjoy. It’s okay to complain. But remember that One Piece is a very long series, and there are some fans who have been a round for literally decades. I myself started reading weekly around the time Duval was introduced, way back in 2008. Every time a new batch of fans comes in the same old arguments get stirred to the top of the pot: Sanji is a creep, Oda can’t draw women, why doesn’t Robin ever get to fight?
It can be exhausting to go through the same hoops time and time again. So if you’re someone who is being critical and feel like no one is listening, or that a bunch of fans are going out of their way to defend Oda, that could be one of the reasons why. They’re tired of having a series they enjoy be shit on.
There are other fans who legitimately don’t think that Oda’s done anything wrong, that jokes are just jokes. If you happen to fall in that category, remember that not everyone feels that way. Art reflects life, which in turn reflects art. One Piece is a few million copies away from outselling Batman. To say it isn’t influential to young readers, both in Japan and abroad, is beyond asinine.
I thank everyone who’s taken the time to read this so far. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how civil the discussion and my inbox as stayed. Even if I didn’t respond to your message, I promise that I did read it.
I wrote as much as I did because I know this is a topic a lot of people care about, and also so I hopefully don’t have to write about it again. A lot of hours has gone into this project, and it’s been exhausting, but in a good way, if that makes any sense. I’m ready to put it to rest.
I was joking with some friends that I think I’ve hit just about every hot topic issue now, so hopefully I can go back to fun questions like speculating if Wapol can eat a person and poop out a devil fruit.
Until then, Sarcasticles, out

Newman’s Nook: The Parable of Hatchan
Tumblr media
Hatchan the Villain
It’s during the Arlong Park Arc of One Piece that readers are first introduced to a group of fishmen who, led by Arlong, have taken over Cocoyasi Village, the home of Straw Hat navigator Nami. It’s a distressing development, as Nami had spent years trying to raise the funds to free her hometown from the clutches of Arlong the Pirate and his band of fishmen troublemakers, including an octopus fishman by the name of Hatchan.
Tumblr media
As one of Arlong’s cronies, Hatchan was a willing accomplice to the group’s crimes. He seems like a dimwitted fool, willing to do whatever Arlong asks of him. This leads Hatchan into direct conflict with Luffy and the Straw Hats as they come to the aid of Nami and her entire hometown.
Hatchan as a villain fights hard against our heroes, proving to be an incredibly powerful swordsman who, for a time, is able to hold his own against even Zoro.
Tumblr media
But upon losing, Hatchan accepts defeat gracefully. He is later found leaving town as Arlong’s crew leaves. At that point, in a series so vast and featuring so many characters, the expectation might be that we’ll never hear from this octopus swordsman again.
But then, the Straw Hats reach Sabaody Archipelago.
Hatchan the Chef
At the Sabaody Archipelago, One Piece introduces readers to a mermaid who is trying to save a friend she refers to as Hachin. Ever the friend to those in need, the Straw Hats follow along to find that a foolish gag character named Duval (long story, but it’s funny) had kidnapped the mermaid’s friend and kept him in a cage. They free Hachin only to discover who he is—their erstwhile enemy and former Arlong Pirate crewman, Hatchan.
Since leaving Arlong and his men, Hatchan has tried to move on with his life and currently runs a restaurant ship named Takoyaki 8.
Tumblr media
He’s also been trying to repent for his past sins, and so when he sees Nami, Hatchan recognizes that he deserves her scorn for life. He knows he has warrant any anger or hatred she might send his way. Hatchan even says that he entirely does not expect her to forgive him. After all, he committed terrible crimes against her family and her homeland. All he wants now is to be able to serve her and the Straw Hats.
At this point, Nami even response by saying that she doesn’t forgive him. However, she adds, they can both move on as individuals and work alongside one another going forward. And honestly, that was more than he could have hoped.
As the crew work their way through the Sabaody Archipelago, Hatchan becomes an important asset. He knows his way around, the players, and the cultural norms of the Archipelago. He is able to give advice and assistance to the entire crew all along the way so they can all keep themselves safe and be on their way. What he does not expect is to have his mermaid friend, Camie, kidnapped while they’re on the island and sold off into slavery.
Hatchan convinces most of the Straw Hats to not rock the boat and see if they can pool their resources together to buy Camie at auction. This entire section of the story is horrific. As you watch other races of beings (giants, fishmen, mermaids) treated as sub-human, you see the inherent, systemic racism these people face every single day. None of them are safe doing everyday things like going to a market or visiting an amusement park, where Camie was kidnapped. Fishmen and mermaids are not co-equal with humans in this society, but less than.
In Paul’s letters to the Colossians and Galatians, he points out that arguments over race are irrelevant (Galatians 3:27-29, Colossians 3:10-11). We are all co-equal in the Lord and our lineage has no impact as to whether the Lord loves us. We should be lucky to see each other that way.
When the Straw Hats fail to save Camie, Luffy goes ballistic and tries to rush at the vile Celestial Dragon who had purchased her as a trophy. Hatchan over and over again stands between them to stop the fight. However, this does not go well.
Hatchan the Martyr
What the Celestial Dragon sees is a sub-human fishman in his way, potentially preventing him from securing his new property. So what does he do? He doesn’t think. He doesn’t talk. He simply pulls out a gun and shoots Hatchan.
As Luffy tries to march up to the Celestial Dragon who shot down his friend, Hatchan calls to him from the ground and takes the blame for every issue they have had.
Tumblr media
Hatchan knew he was a sinner. He knew he was a failure. He knew he did wrong. He knew that eventually his evil would catch up to him and, frankly, when it happens, he deserves it. He deserves punishment for his crimes.
In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus tells the story of two men (Luke 18:9-14). One is a Pharisee who publicly announces his prayer. He is larger than life and important above all. The other is a tax collector who recognizes his own weakness and sin. He has his head down low and is begging the Lord to have mercy upon him for all his failings.
In this scenario, Hatchan is the tax collector. He knows his own failings and that he is undeserving of mercy. Yet, unlike the tax collector, he sees the cruel world around him and does not ask for anything. He expects the world to remain evil. He is fine suffering if his friends can be saved by his sacrificial death.
The Parable of Hatchan
Before we get too far, I want to say one thing up front—Hatchan does not die here. He survives this encounter and Camie is freed from slavery by the power of her friends. I just want to make that clear before delving any further.
With that said, what can we learn from the Hatchan’s story?
All Fall Short
Various passages in the Bible point to the fact that all humans are sinners, but nowhere is it more obvious than in Romans 3:23. In this passage, Paul explains that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. When he says “all,” he means everyone. He means himself. He means the apostles. He means you. He means me. Everyone has sinned at some point and may sin again in the future.
Hatchan shows us this through his actions and his statements. He freely admits that he was a failure and a sinner who sinned against the Straw Hats, but especially against Nami and her hometown. He recognizes and acknowledges that he falls short.
Evil is Around Us
Evil is a real presence in the world. I am not talking some physical incarnation of evil we see as monsters in fairy tales. I am talking about deep rooted evil that exists in the hearts of man.
I am speaking about the racist evil that led to human beings of African descent created in God’s image to be bought and sold as chattel in the United States.
I am speaking about the evil of police officers who abuse their authority to harm those they are sworn to protect.
I am speaking to the evil of eugenicists who sought to wipe out entire races of people.
I am speaking of the everyday evil of people who lie to their friends or gossip about their enemies.
I am speaking of even the passive evil of ignoring the plight of our fellow man.
Evil is all around us and can be overwhelming. While we cannot dwell on it at all times, we also should not ignore it or pretend it does not exist. Hatchan tried to convince the Straw Hats to turn a blind eye to the evils at the Sabaody Archipelago. They refused. And we, too, have the choice to refuse to ignore the evil happening around us.
All Can Be Forgiven
Hatchan was a fallen criminal, but he was also able to move toward a better future and create a new life despite his past. While Nami does not accept any apologies at first, by the time this arc in Sabaody Archipelago concludes, Hatchan has transformed from a former enemy to an ally of the Straw Hats. All can be forgiven, and forgiveness can be offered.
Christ commands Christians to do just that. We are called to love our neighbors as ourselves. This includes those we may despise. It feels hard to want to forgive those who have wronged us, but let us not forget that the Lord does just that for us. In Romans 5:8, Paul reminds us that while we continue to sin, the Lord loves us anyway and gave His only begotten Son to free us from Sin.
As the Lord forgives us, we are to forgive.
As the Straw Hats forgive Hatchan, we are to do the same.
There is Hope
While there is evil and sin in the world, there is still hope! It becomes easy to lose sight of it, but it nonetheless remains. The Lord provides us with an eternal hope that one day He will make all things right.
In the meantime, though, we can see the world being restored bit by bit. We see it in the compassion of Mary Johnson who forgave the man who murdered her son and helped him get back on his feet after he got out of prison. We see it in the examples of public repentance of the Southern Baptist Convention, a convention which was founded by white slaveowners in support slavery in the United States, over their racist roots. We see it in the stories of the Lost Boys of Sudan who worked together to protect one another after losing their families in the Sudanese Civil Wars.
Things can get better and the Lord is here to help. Yet He requires us to be active participants in changing things for the better. He wants us to be like the Straw Hats. He desires for us to see evil, and then to do the only thing we should—to stand up for what’s right.

Reading One Piece pt 196: Soul And Shadow
Chapter 443
Thoughts:
- Fpos/cs: The space pirate is dead and there’s a big explosion in the distance. Let’s see what it is
- Brook is on Sunny! :D
- “WHAT THE HELL IS THAT GUY!?” – everyone :D
- “There’s no reason for a skeleton to wear an afro!” there’s no reason for alive people to do so either but that’s doesn’t stop us
- Where did Usopp’s new hat come from? (Usopp looks like a Vampire Slayer now :D) It looks like something Mihawk would wear. Is it Zoro’s? Please let it be Zoro’s. We know he’s a fan :D
- What is it with Brook and panties. I see it’s a gag already but like… why
- Zoro has objections :D
- “Why do you think you went with him? You were supposed to stop Luffy from running wild!” “We’re ashamed…” oh, like you would do a better job, Zoro. But I won’t lie, Zoro yelling at people like they’re unruly children is my JAM
- Let’s get to know each other a little better. In the kitchen!
- Wow, nice kitchen by the way
- (lol, now Chopper got a cross too. He’s imitating Usopp, it’s precious)
- Brook praised the ship. Franky likes him already
- Wait for the dinner patiently, Brook
- Lol, Luffy didn’t even introduce himself till now
- Yomi-yomi no mi. That’s Brook’s devil fruit. „Yomi-gaeru is the verb for ‘ressurect’” says the underpanel text
- “The truth is, I already died few decades ago!” wow. Ok
- “the power of revival” yeah, we kinda guessed that
- “I was promised that I could live a second time as a “revived human”. Oh, how wonderful that ability seemed!” this already sounds heartbreaking and we’re nowhere close to Brook’s backstory, what is going on here
- So Brook was killed some years ago, along with his crew
- “My soul was returned from the underworld! If I had returned to my body immediately, I would have been resurrected, but, as you can see, there is a thick fog on this sea and I got lost.” Well damn. It doesn’t sound heartbreaking, it IS heartbreaking
- My only problem with this is it’s heartbreaking a little too soon. I’m used to a slower pace and I’m Suspicious
- “My soul wandered around this fog for a whole year! When I found my own body, it was only white bones.” wow
- “You’re just as stupid as Zoro, huh?” WHAT A FUCKING BURN LUFFY TOTALLY UNCALLED FOR
- (Just noticed Brook’s souls says a little “yohoho” in that one panel. Precious)
- Now Zoro wonders about the afro
- “The roots of my hair are strong” You guys are made for each other
- Huh?
- Brook doesn’t have a reflection
- This is weird. You know why? Vampires are known for not having reflections BUT it is a thing because people believed water/metal/mirror can reflect your soul, and vampires don’t have souls. And Brook just told a story of how his soul returned to his sad remains after a year. This is sketchy
- (do I sound paranoid)
- Oh, and no shadow either. Ok, how is that a thing, what is GOING OOOOON
- Zoro! Is! Suspicious!
- Well, at least in a good company then :D
- “being a skeleton… and not having a shadow… are completely different things” oh????
- “to be continued in the next chapter.” WHAT A TROLL
- You really have a feeling Oda wanted to cut in that moment but to his dismay realized he’s still got half of a chapter to make. That’s what you get for switching to such fast pace. Do you know anything about shounens, Oda
*Please stand by. We’re experiencing technical difficulties; author needs to stop wheezing at her own joke*
- Back to business
- “Some years ago a man snatched away my shadow…” snatched away???
- “A shadow being stolen… It means that I cannot exist in a world with light.” ???
- “If my body is exposed to direct sunlight, it will start to disappear. I don’t have a shadow that should be seen in the light.” This is horrible
- “I also can’t be seen in a mirror or in a photograph! In short, mine is the existence rejected by light!” THIS IS HORRIBLE
- “Why are you so cheerful? Your life sucks!” Sanji… I… I don’t think Brook’s all that well in the head to be honest
- “Today is a wonderful day! I WAS ABLE TO FIND SOMEBODY!” uh, what
- I couldn’t tell a difference between today and tomorrow on this dark sea with a think fog. All alone on the ship that won’t obey its rudder. How many years I’ve been wandering!” I’m taking it back, Brook is as sane as possible in these circumstances
- “I’VE BEEN REALLY LONELY!” and that’s all you get from me, this is getting way too depressing
- “you invited me to be your nakama! I’m really glad. Thank you very much.” Luffy’s smile is precious and has to be protected at all cost
- “But the truth is, I should decline” I knew the other shoe will drop soon
- Brook can’t stand in the light and needs to be at least somewhere close to his shadow. Yeah, it’s unpractical for them to have him as a nakama
- But if you think Straw Hats will be practical about that then you clearly watched the wrong show, BOIIII
- “What are you saying!? We’re not strangers! If that’s the case, we’ll get your shadow back! Tell me who stole it!” LUFFY FOR PRESIDENT
- ...Oh sorry, LUFFY FOR PIRATE KING
- “…!!” Brook clearly doesn’t know what to do with this and can you blame him
- “You’re really a good person. Even then, I cannot tell you that.” Yeah, that’s what I thought
- “I only just met you. You shouldn’t say that “you’ll die for me”” I’m sensing a good heart, complete incomprehension of anything Luffy, and trauma. Lots and lots of trauma
- “Is the enemy so strong?” yes, and also Brook doesn’t know how strong you are
- “I’ve decided that I will fight him” Brook wants to deck that shadow stealer :D I hope he will
- “However, Let’s sing a song! In honor of the good encounter we had today. I’m very proud of my abilities. I used to be the musician on my pirate ship.” CRITICAL ERROR CRITICAL ERROR
- “Eeh!? Really!? I’m begging you, be my nakama, you idiot!” you confessed to being a musician, Brook, now Luffy will never leave you alone. He wanted a musician in his crew even more than he wanted a cook! You got a big storm coming, Grandpa!
- Huh?
- !!!!
- THERE”S A GHOST IN THE KITCHEN
- Oh, Brook knows what’s happening!
- “Did you pick a ‘floating barrel’ on this sea?” “We did!” “That was a trap.” Figures
- No but seriously, they’re heading to some island (or they’re leaded to it?) that’s probably not on any maps
- “this is the “Ghost Island” that wanders through the sea… Thriller Bark!” !!!!!!!! Name Drop!
- That island is from West Blue and log pose isn’t responding to it. I don’t understand the science of it but it’s bad
- What is Brook doing?
- On the Sunny’s head he stands. Big jump tho
Tumblr media
- You drama queen. I love you
- Oh look, he can run on the top of the sea. How does that even…. Ok, nevermind
- PROTECT LUFFY SMILE! EVEN IF IT LEDS YOU TO AN ISLAND FULL OF GHOST AND SHADOW STEALERS!
- More of Sunny
Tumblr media
- Isn’t she amazing
Second chapter and I learned so many things already. This arc is GREAT

Skypiea
Skypiea is an island located in the sky above Paradise. It is the primary setting of the Skypiea Arc, and the sixth island visited by the Straw Hat Pirates on the Grand Line.
Tumblr media
History
Four hundred years ago half of Jaya, subsequently called
Upper Yard
, was knocked up into the sky. By that time it had been homeland to Shandia for many centuries. Upper Yard presented an amount of earth never seen by Skypieans before, and that is why they wanted it so badly that they fought off the Shandia to claim it.
Kalgara
, the Shandia leader, fought bravely to defend his home, yet he was killed in battle. The Skypieans successfully drove off the Shandia and claimed the Upper Yard. For 400 years, Skypieans and Shandia were at each other's throats. 6 years ago, Gan Fall wanted to return the Upper Yard to the Shandia to end the 400 Years War, but his negotiations failed to take place due to
Enel
taking over.
Under Enel's Rule
Six years ago, Enel came to Skypiea with his men, after destroying his homeland Birka. He overthrew Gan Fall, claimed his position as God and became the despotic ruler of Skypiea himself. He settled in Upper Yard with his warriors and servants, but for Skypieans and all other people this island became a forbidden land on death penalty. After Enel took over, all the citizens of Skypiea lived in constant fear of him. His highly developed mantra and ability to sense electric fields allowed him to hear conversations and thus made him aware of almost everything happening in Skypiea. If anyone dared to speak out against Enel or challenge his list of commandments, he would shoot a giant column of lightning down from the sky to effectively eliminate the dissenter. Enel made foreigners out to be criminals by imputing a crime for almost any of their actions (even snoring). Until they arrived for the Judgment, the inhabitants of Skypiea were responsible for guiding them there. Anyone would become criminal themselves upon helping a criminal. This gave birth to the citizens' sense of crime and they became feeble and weak
Main Areas of Skypiea
Angel Island
Angel Island was Skypiea's main residential district, composed entirely of Island Clouds. Bisected by the famous Lovely Street, it contained a wharf, houses, and many shops, and was usually patrolled by the White Berets. It was ultimately destroyed by Enel.
Tumblr media
Lovely Street Lovely street  is a rather well-known and well-traveled part of Angel Island. It is the main marketplace. The road has many shops, and is a sort of Skypiean main street. Shops of all kinds line the road of Lovely Street, including many Dial and food shops. There, Conis confronted the citizens of Angel Island, and gave her announcement regarding Enel's plan.
Tumblr media
Upper Yard This is the other half of Jaya, blasted up by Knock Up Stream 400 years ago. It is much larger than Angel Island. As a great amount of Vearth it is of high value for the sky inhabitants, being called "holy land". It had become residence for rulers of Skypiea, including Enel. The trees and Animals on Upper Yard have grown to huge sizes, due to the decrease in the atmosphere. Enel's priests ran their Ordeals here. A giant beanstalk, called Giant Jack, towers up in the center of the island, piercing through the ruins of ancient city Shandora and the God's Shrine. The Shandorian Golden Belfry resides on a cloud nearby. The Sacrificial Altar is also located in Upper Yard.
Tumblr media
Chopper  Chopper and a character like one piece a lot he and a reindeer. He is the doctor for the Straw Hat Pirates crew. Chopper is a reindeer who, after eating Hito Hito no Mi, acquired the ability to transform and reason like humans. He is the sixth member and one of the few members of the crew that was born on the Grand Line, on an island called Drum.
Tumblr media
First Part of the history    Chopper is a reindeer with an abnormality of a blue nose that motivated other reindeer to treat him like a problematic reindeer (always making him follow the herd behind them from afar). However, when the young reindeer ate Hito Hito no Mi, he was even more recent to his herd (and with the increase in intelligence granted by the fruit, now very aware of it) he was abandoned. Unfortunately for Chopper, his latest in communicating with humans on Drum Island proved to be disastrous. He was wounded by villagers who mistook him for the Abominable Snowman. However, he was saved by the healer Dr. Hiruluk (Hiriluk in the English version) who gave him a name and adopted him as his friend and assistant. Although his achievements were of dubious medical value, Dr. Hiruluk became Chopper’s exemplary model.
Tumblr media
Second Part of the history Hiruluk taught Chopper his philosophy of life, that all diseases could be cured and his strong faith in the Pirate Flag as a symbol of conviction, which defies what was considered impossible. The two went from house to house, administering their “cures” in a country where all doctors not authorized by King Wapol were banned.
When Hiruluk’s health deteriorated, Chopper thought he had caught a cold again because the old man did not want Chopper to see him die. But once Chopper found out what was going on, he was determined to find something to heal his mentor, his only friend. Third Part of history Before long he found what he was looking for: a special type of mushroom with a skull and crossbones prominently displayed in the medical book, unaware of what that sign meant. Recalling that he overheard by some villagers that a “certain” type of mushroom can cure any disease, Chopper steals Hiruluk’s favorite medical book to find the mushroom miraculous. Chopper’s arduous journey was a success, although he risked his life and suffered many injuries, such as a broken left horn.
Fourth Part of history Hiruluk, filled with tears of gratitude, ate the mushroom to show his love and appreciation for Chopper, but Chopper would later find out from Dr. Kureha that he gave Dr. Hiruluk a fatal dose of poison. But Hiruluk would not live much longer anyway. Declaring that he had a wonderful life (in the English dub he declares that he is a doctor), he commits suicide by blowing himself up outside Drum Castle (before being killed by the poison because of Chopper). As Hiruluk’s last wish, Dr. Kureha (the last remaining doctor who did not belong to King Wapol) adopted Chopper and taught him ‘real’ medicine for the next 6 years. Chopper worked as hard as he could to become a doctor like his idol, Hiruluk.
Arlong Park
The Arlong Park Arch also known as the Arlong Arch is the fifth arch in the history of the East Blue Saga. After recruiting Nami and getting Going Merry, recruiting Roronoa Zoro, Usopp and later Sanji, they leave (along with Johnny and Yosaku) for Vila Cocoyasi, Nami's hometown ruled by the tyrannical Arlong. This is where Nami's real motives will come to the fore. At Arlong Park, Arlong, the leader of the fishmen, who was negotiating with a corrupt navy captain, Nezumi. The latter received a special payment from the fishman to not intervene militarily in Arlong's criminal operations on that island. When Nezumi leaves, Nami returns to the fishman band, richer (with Straw Hat money) and is well received by Arlong and his companions. In Vila Cocoyashi, Usopp learns that Arlong has dominated all the villages on the island and demands high monthly taxes in order for the locals to stay alive, so Usopp gets angry and goes to the center of the village to analyze the situation and sees Arlong arriving in Vila Cocoyashi to demand a very high payment from Mayor Genzo due to his illegal possession of weapons, as he could not pay.
The people are prevented from invading Arlong Park by Johnny and Yosaku who say that only the Straw Hats could defeat the fishmen.
Arlong summons Mohmo to attack Luffy, but Luffy throws him back to the sea. Arlong throws Luffy into a pool and he is trapped in a drowning rock, while Genzo and Nojiko jump into the water to save Luffy. Genzo and Nojiko free Luffy from the water and he starts a great duel against Arlong, in one of Arlong's blows, Luffy stops at Nami's work room and destroys everything, because there she suffered a lot, Nami is very happy. Luffy is not satisfied with destroying only that room and destroys the whole of Arlong Park, whose fall led to Arlong's defeat.

East Sea of Monsters - Chapter 20
There’s something hiding in Sunny’s Shadows, and sometimes it feels like Chopper is the only one who doesn’t know what it is.
-

Seeking - Chopper
Chopper’s captain is a selfish monster – this, Chopper knows well, in the way that his Captain has bloody fists and has torn gods with a smile.
He laughs in the dark, for he does not want the dark, and chases away tyrants because they hurt a friend. He welcomes strangers into his crew, women who stir revolutions and men who are all but bone.
He has climbed the cold mountains and stood behind a flag not his own for a small, insignificant reindeer. He is Luffy, who has struck down armies and governments and islands and kingdoms, all to save a friend.
All to get what he wants, and for so long, Chopper has been part of those precious few that Luffy calls crew.
So why, why does it feel like Chopper’s just falling behind? Falling out of reach, out of his stars endless orbit?
People walk aboard the ship at night away from Chopper’s prying eyes and he has to know, he must know what they are keeping from him, why he’s not part of this inner circle
He swore to be a monster for Luffy, and if a monster he must be, he had hoped Luffy would still accept him, for his captain loves him and is a monster too
But that’s not the case.
They are hiding from him, hiding something that they don’t want Chopper to know, and it’s been going on for a while now, perhaps sense the beginning.
(What do you say, he wonders, when it’s been before your very eyes in inhuman instinct and the smell of rotting flesh?)
Why do you hate me now? He wants to ask but can’t because this is his home and if he’s not home here, then he can’t be anywhere else.
Ever.
-
The truth comes as all thing Straw Hat do, in a moment that passes between things such as sanity and well into the world of something strange.
Typically, it would be wonderful as well.
It’s not.
The New World is harsh in the way that no other place is. Fire rains from the heavens and lighting brightens clear skies. There are pockets of storm and raging seas, all unpredictable, and an aura of danger that sharpens every sense.
(Every color, every scent, every sight and smell and breath and burst of laughter always seem brighter if they might be your last.)
There are also stretches of calm – and this is one of them. Islands move in the New World, or at least the waters do. Weeks and months and days blend together under the blue sky of the Grand Line – every island is a refuge from its harsh waters, but a rare refuge at that.
(They are pirates, of course, they have no home but the sea but occasionally… occasionally a soul must step foot on land to know what blessings the sea has – and what dangers a sailor courts to be welcomed into her embrace.)
Now, there are no islands in sight, and have not been for the past three weeks. The waters are dry in these parts, and normally, Chopper knows, Sanji would not be worried, but there are few fish to supplement their supplies and no enemies crossing their paths.
A crew of nine does not need much to subsist, but their crew consists of people with harsher metabolism’s than most.
There is no danger now, but there will be soon. Chopper knows this, as does Sanji.
(Chopper is merely considering with the welfare of the crew, but there is a deeper worry in Sanji, one that causes him to look towards the back of the meat locker with worry, so much worry, as his special meats supply starts to dwindle down. It’s Luffy favorite.
He doesn’t know why Sanji’s so worried. Luffy can survive a couple days without whatever kind of meat it is…right?
Maybe he should ask.)
(He doesn’t.)
They start rations on week three and a half.
The crew is agreeable, especially with the hard lilt to Sanji’s eyes but –
There’s something more to their movements and how they all get restless. The Straw Hat crew has never faced any adversary with nervousness and unease as a whole, so why, Chopper wonders, are we (they) doing it now?
They cast eyes towards Luffy, who is innocently sucking on a bone from the last meal, and Chopper wonders if this is another thing they are hiding from him.
(C’mon, he wants to scream, I’m your doctor! Trust me! Why can’t you trust me? I grew stronger too! I fought and trained like the rest of you! Why why why? Is it because I’m a monster now?)
Chopper doesn’t say anything, and watches as the crew leaves the galley, Sanji snapping a quick word at Luffy before leaving.
Chopper leaves too, and wonders why the Sunny suddenly feels so cold.
(Where’s the truth that soon to come?)
-
Chopper, before, before Marineford and training and a Captain so hurt, sensed something from his crew, something that made (makes) his hair stand on end and every animal instinct scream, despite his love for his saviors.
It came from Usopp and Luffy and Zoro and Nami and Sanji, and the way they would smile in the dark or smell or breathe a little too off. But Chopper ignored it, for they were his crew, and trained himself during his two years of training to accept rather than fear.
He can’t help but wonder if they are feeling what he felt (what he feels still), now in regards to him.
It hurts, more than he’d like to admit, especially when (Luffy smiles all jagged edges Usopp seems to bend and twist and scare Nami breaths and smells like ozone Sanji feels like bone and Zoro is lost on The Sunny but winks with two heads at Chopper-) they smile at him like nothing is wrong, and praise him in battle.
He loves this crew, so why, why?
Why doesn’t Luffy accept the monster?
-
Sunny is different than Merry, though Chopper loves both. Merry was white and young and lovely in the sun (but at night her shadows were never colder and there were always odd splatters on her hull.) Sunny is golden and bold and young too, not like a child (led to slaughter) but like an adventure at its start.
(The shadows in her hull and the splatters on the kitchen floor seem new, in the way that Merry’s weren’t, and of course they are for Sunny was built for them, but Merry… it seemed like there were shadows born onto Merry that they brought to Sunny.)
It is a surprise when Sunny starts feeling like Merry did.
(Like the night when the Doctor died, or nights when Doctorine couldn’t save a patient. The. Air of death and the stench of decay setting in, the sight of bodies, pale and unmoving, and sounds of anguish of those left beyond echoing through the air… Like hallowed grounds, when someone died, like an absence in the earth.
Chopper does not forget nights when all feels lost.
(Men die when they are forgotten, after all.))
Chopper doesn’t know why though, why there is sudden coldness mixed with home.
Because, suddenly, Franky is fashioning some sort of chains with Usopp, mixed with the sea stone they swore they would never use and Nami keeps checking in. Suddenly, Robin has more eyes everywhere, and Zoro’s scent (always tinged with blood) is now spiked with the worry he gets when the crews in danger. Suddenly, Brook is always on deck, playing a calming song and Sanji is giving Luffy more than the rations allotted him to have.
(The ‘special meats’ have run out.)
And Luffy…
(A hint of trepidation haunts the crews every step.)
And Luffy…
(Well. Here the thing- Chopper doesn’t know, because Luffy should be acting lethargic and hungry with the lapse in food but instead he’s tight lipped and unmoving – as if he moves to fast he will jump out of his skin. Luffy is tense and jittery and not meeting anyone’s eyes, so unlike his bold, uncaring self. It hurts, because Chopper wants to help his Captain but he can’t bring himself to move, because what if?
Is that really his captain?
Chopper is not, because his Captain certainly doesn’t have spikes on his skin or blood on his teeth, now, right?)
-
There’s something in the Shadows, Chopper notices.
Something dark.
(He’s always avoided the shadows before.)
It stalks in the night, slow and comfortable with the shapes of Sunny’s hiding spots. It hesitates, sometimes, when it’s so close that Chopper can feel its breath running down its back, and flees when Chopper turns, so that nothing else Is on deck save for Luffy or another of his crew mates.
Chopper doesn’t feel safe sleeping, not when he can smell the hunger radiating off of it.
He tries to distract himself with his studies, tries to have Robin and Franky distract him too, but it never seems to work. When he suggests a game (Hide n’ Seek, despite his hatred for it before (a fear to override a few)) Luffy and Usopp shake their heads.
(Well. Usopp does. Luffy’s sitting tense and with hands gripped tightly behind his back as he rests near Zoro. If Chopper could see it, he would see Zoro’s hand clenching Luffy’s wrist together, stopping him from clawing at himself or others in nervous habit. A precaution. A warning. A failsafe.)
“Not the best idea right now, aye Chopper? Why don’t you go see if Sanji’s ready for a meal, okay?” Usopp says while Luffy is far too quiet for normal.
(He’s been quiet a lot, recently. Chopper’s worried.)
The reindeer does as Chopper requests, and peeks in on the kitchen.
He has the strangest feeling that the beast is behind him again, the thing that lurks in the shadows, keeping him from sleeping soundly, but when he looks back, all he sees his Luffy shoving his face into Zoro’s shoulder.
It’s nothing… right?
-
Chopper misses the oddities of when simple games used to unnerve him. He wishes they were back to those times, instead of now, when every step is like waiting for an inevitable tripwire.
Dinner is small. Only a simple meal of pasta and water, with some sparse meatballs on top.
Luffy keeps his hands to himself and doesn’t snag anyone else food. He’s shaking, if anyone looks too closely, and if Chopper himself wasn’t half frightened by the look in Luffy’s eye he’d be ordering Luffy into the infirmary.
As it is, he looks at the way Luffy fidgets and keeps quiet.
Luffy’s just hungry, Chopper assures himself, we all are.
(He’s just scared and Chopper doesn’t know if he’s referring to himself or Luffy.)
After dinner, Luffy’s supposed to take watch but Zoro goes up with him.
(A conversation happens between the two’s eyes, Zoro the only one to get Luffy to meet him and its one Chopper will never be able to decipher, wonders if he even wants to.)
It’s not Luffy that comes back downstairs after watch, but Chopper is too afraid to turn over and look to see if it’s true.
(Hot breath runs down his back, and Chopper remembers that just because he has horns and a fruit it doesn’t mean that reindeer aren’t still prey animals.)
-
Day ten of rations, day five after the meats in the back of the freezer and run out and Luffy stops shaking.
He stands, in the middle of the deck, and the sun grows cold.
(Whatever Luffy is, he doesn’t fit into his skin, the mist surrounding his essence (a shield for the rest of the world.)
Luffy’s head cocks to the side as he fingers still, and Chopper looks at him, truly for perhaps the first time in a while, and wonder why he has been so blind. In Luffy’s stillness, scratches and startling thinness and dark spots emerge where there once was none.
I failed, Chopper thinks, and doesn’t know why he hasn’t been treating his captain, I failed.
Where did the sun go?
Luffy speaks. “Sanji,” He says, and is voice is like spiders on skin and maggots on corpses – exactly the tone it should be but always, never right. There’s power thrumming through his voice, like an unbridled beast, and Chopper, unwittingly, takes a step back.
“Sanji,” Luffy says, and Sanji steps forward, smoke in his step. “Help.” And Luffy breaks but not in the way Chopper knows – no, in the way that beasts do when they have been pushed too far on a hunt.
(Too long without food, the cold winter blows and all that’s left is red red red red red red death)
Luffy lunges as Sanji does, and then Luffy’s on the ground, held by strong legs and a pair of sea stone cuffs.
(He’s not really fighting now, Chopper knows, because Luffy’s stronger than the seastone they have when he wills it, but beasts don’t have will do they?)
(Chopper does. Luffy does.)
Sanji drags Luffy, so lethargic now, that unsettling restlessness gone until Luffy Is thrown into the Bay 6 of the Soldier Dock System (and how, how has Chopper missed the metal walls and places for hooks along the edges?) where he is cuffed and hooked to the wall.
Sanji gives Luffy a tight hug, hand holding his jaw so carefully away from him, and walks out.
He notices Chopper then, and softens at the horror in Chopper’s eyes.
“Chopper,” He says, and that’s it before he brings him away from their chained, starving Captain and up to the top deck.
As Sanji shuts the door with heavy chains, Chopper catches one last look at Luffy, slumped tiredly to the ground.
It’s not Luffy.
(the shadows…)
-
In the galley, between Robin and Nami, Chopper listens to a story weaved about a demon sea, and crew mates who hail from it. It’s not the entire thing of course (Chopper swears something is slurring Nami’s words together so that she can’t tell it all) but it’s enough to let the horribleness melt from Choppers bones.
They weren’t keeping secrets from him because they’d thought he was a monster, but because they’d thought he be scared.
And maybe he is, but most of all, he’s angry.
“I COULD HAVE HURT YOU! I DON’T KNOW YOUR PHYSIOLOGY, I COULD HAVE GIVEN YOU SOMETHING, SOME HERB TO HELP WITH SOMETHING AND KILLED YOU!” He screeches, mushrooms flashing through his brain. “I’M YOUR DOCTOR! TRUST ME!”
Nami shushes him, with assurances that they do, of course, but Choppers mind is on the most pressing subject.
Luffy.
Like a trance, he slides from his seat and onto the floor.
Luffy, he thinks, avoiding his crew mates to walk to the infirmary for a few precious materials.
Luffy.
My captain.
Chopper walks to Bay Six.
-
(Of course, he realizes that Luffy is the presence in the shadows and that his captain was hunting him. But, quite frankly, he doesn’t care to think about what the special meat was or what Luffy might have done had he not restrained himself, he only cares that his captain is hurting and he’s done nothing.)
(Sunny and Merry, floating above him, let their protection fall, and let Chopper see what Luffy asked them to hide. Their captain is hurting, and he must survive for they love him too.)
(The Veil has no mind, but there is laughter, ringing through the air, as a child realizes the monsters were not besides him or in him or under the bed but in his hero, his savior, his captain.
Tis a cruel world, isn’t it?)
-
Bay Six is dark when Chopper arrives. Dark and scary and so very, very lonely.
(Chopper thinks of two years without crew, and then thinks of Luffy and lets himself have one, single tear.)
When he pushes it open, there is someone waiting for him.
“Luffy,” He breathes out, and instincts hit him like a brick.
There is fear, and then there is terror, and then there is horror. Chopper is well past all these, into something far greater – the kind of emotion that occurs when heroes fall and all that is left is something dark and broken and unnatural.
The emotion prey gets when faced with certain, absolute death.
Before him is something (One who Feast, King of Beast, Demon of Pits and Hell, Hellshaker hell raiser, Voices would scream if Chopper could hear them) that isn’t human. It reeks of death and rotted flesh, a smell Chopper has known before, with blood tinging the scent with its own abhorrence.
All he sees is Luffy, but it’s not him. It can’t be.
“Luffy,” Chopper says again, and this time Luffy looks back. “Let me help you.”
Blood drips from one of Luffy’s cuts onto the ground.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
“No.” Luffy rasps, and its final, the way he says it, but Chopper can’t help but protest.
“Please! Let me do something, please, Luffy, Captain. You always help us but let me help you! I can do something, anything if you just let me-” Chopper is cut off by the force of a Conquerors Will slamming into him.
KNEEL.
It’s not love he feels, this time, like he usually does when Luffy’s presence washes over him.
This time, it is a heightening of the horror that he already felt, an execution that fells him to his knees, trembling, a force of will that makes him seem small and afraid.
Luffy, he can’t even bring himself to think, because this is his Captain but…
KNEEL.
Before him is teeth and hunger and horns, scars and scales rising with fire and eyes, eyes crawling to stare at Chopper with nothing but a ravenous greed.
It’s a selfish beast, and now it is a hungry beast, but before it was his Captain – it still is his captain.
(The Veil is a presence that which can be torn down by a will greater than the force itself. Conquerors who know it, breath it, live it, treat it as a play thing, a curtain to peel back and forth at will to show the truth. Few know, but all who see believe, and the veil has bowed to few in the past.
Luffy, who is never without the veil even among what some presume to be his kind, can shake the veil like he has torn down governments and islands and war lords.
Ruthlessly, and without mercy.)
KNEEL.
He falls to his knees.
“Chopper,” Luffy says, blood spilling from his mouth and dripping onto the floor, painting it in reds and blacks. “Go.”
Chopper does not want to go, but what can one do when faced with the soul of a conqueror, captain, king in the body of something from the depths?
Chopper leaves, and sobs outside the door because no matter how terrified Chopper is of Luffy, Luffy will always love them. Save them.
Be alone for them.
Chopper loves his Captain, and wonders why he ever thought Luffy wouldn’t like Chopper because he was a monster.
-
A Marine ship passes by in two days, but not before Luffy howls in his chains and every night is spent silent and huddled in the dark.
(Not before Zoro and Sanji stand guard by the door and knock their captain back every time he gets deranged enough to escape.)
Zoro and Sanji head out and come back with six prisoners. Chopper wonders what they want to do with them, when the Marine lifeboats are right there, but then they walk down to Bay Six and Chopper understands.
He doesn’t want to understand
(The thing about Luffy is that despite everything, despite his selfishness and greed, he will never demand something so significant from them. Only ask.
Join my crew, he will say, and take you anyway, but he will never demand that Chopper not help anyone but himself.
If Chopper truly wished it, he could demand that they let those marines live, in remembrance of an oath he never took. Instead, he helps Robin bring crates of fruit and meat aboard the Sunny, and ignores the screams from below and the blood on deck (Sunny will take care over it before long.)
Luffy would never demand that Chopper become a monster for him, but he does not ask either, and that makes Chopper give himself again and again and again to him.
If the price of his captain's safety, his sanity is perhaps some of Chopper’s morality, well –
He’s a pirate. He sought this out himself.
(It’s not a game, not anymore, and the Straw Hat Flag is the sign of Chopper’s freedom. If he is to deny that, then he is to deny that Straw Hat Luffy will never be the Pirate King and that is a lie.)
Chopper accepts the weight of knowledge and cries himself to sleep.
-
Luffy is alright soon enough, and they reach an island in another three days. This time, Chopper knows about the blood on Luffy’s lips and doesn’t question it.
(Rumors of men gone missing flutter through his ears at night, women weeping in the dark and children crying because they don’t understand loss.)
(Luffy needs it, Chopper knows, and he will never deny his Captain something so important, no matter how much it strikes blades at his heart and settles poison in his stomach.)
But now…
The beast in the shadows isn’t so terrifying anymore. And when Luffy comes down the ladders from watch, Chopper sleeps tight, knowing his Captain is there, and that Chopper now knows the truth.
His crewmates can sleep easy, heal easy, because Chopper can find dark tomes of demonic medicines to heal his crew and with the power of a conquerors slicing will, he can save them all, three heads or no skin or made of storm instead of bone.
(There’s more to Luffy he knows, even now.)
(Trust us Luffy!)
(His captain doesn’t talk about himself.)
Chopper climbs into Luffy’s arms, the upmost trust in his eyes, and knows that everything is finally okay.
Everyone is here.
Alive, Safe, and sound.
(Luffy would never eat them.)
(Right?)

Xian Characters, Features, and Landmarks (Pt. 1)
Roodaka- Roodaka is the ruthless CEO of Vortixx Industries, having secured a practically permanent position there from a young age after she scaled The Mountain. A cutthroat business-dealer, she helps direct the company’s actions, oversees stocks, and surveys the occasional experiment or investment, providing a personal hand of involvement every now and then. She has done business with just about every major power in all of Xia, and is among the Powers That Be. With an eye for potential, she has led Vortixx Industries to the top of Xia’s arms-manufacturers, and is not just content with her current success either. Roodaka is an opportunist, and will and has back-stabbed others and crushed enemies for the total domination of Vortixx Industries.
She is cold-hearted and ruthless, and believes whole-heartedly in the idea that might makes right. Roodaka has been conditioned both by experience and by others that only the most powerful have the authority to lead; If one cannot prove their merit and mettle, then they are a liability and must be cast out, not to be trusted by neither peers or even themselves. Regularly Roodaka does puzzles and tests her intelligence, reflecting on and questioning her own progress. And despite being a noble, Roodaka despises most other aristocrats like herself, seeing them as pompous, lazy fools who have become atrophied from resting on their laurels. A sharpened wit is the key to victory for Roodaka, and she sees challenges as the ideal whetstone for her mind.
She has no intent of letting herself become weak and arrogant, and seeks to do more with her life and purpose than just a live a pointless, meaningless life of hedonism. For Roodaka, she wants something more; More than what the other rich fools on Xia typically have to offer. She has no intention of living and dying like any other fool, and for that she sees little difference between most of Xia’s upper-crust and its lower-class. Control is all Roodaka cares about, and she prizes the ability to strike fear in one’s minions in order to keep them in line.
Roodaka herself is not necessarily a fighter, and is thus often flanked by a trio of Exo-Toa Lerahk, machines she helped oversee the design and construction of. But even without her bodyguards, Roodaka is not entirely defenseless- She has access to a Rhotuka Gauntlet that allows her to spawn a wheel of energy, one that drastically mutates whatever target it comes into contact with. Roodaka possesses a cruel sense of humor, and has used her Mutation Rhotuka to dispatch enemies of hers, often leaving them to suffer their cursed forms as ruined outcasts of society. Roodaka herself is highly intelligent, able to read and understand others well, and is a master-manipulator and complex schemer.
Sidorak- Known as the ‘Visorak King’ in some sectors of Nynrah, Sidorak was once an esteemed, celebrated war general with a wide collection of medals on his chest to honor him. However, his boldness eventually got him in trouble with one of the Powers That Be; And incensed, the powerful individual had Sidorak exiled to Nynrah as a death-sentence. Stripped of his title, rank, and badges, most would have despaired and left themselves to die in Sidorak’s place- But Sidorak himself continued forging on, making a new path for himself in Nynrah.
He eventually came into contact with a pack of Visorak Spiders, and recognizing that the creatures wanted to be free from their Nynrah Ghost masters to hunt as they pleased, Sidorak offered them freedom. He defeated the Visorak Spiders before letting them know that underneath his command, they could have total freedom and impunity to hunt and kill as they pleased; And having been won over by his strength, the spiders obliged to Sidorak’s offer. Ever since, Sidorak has slowly begun to amass a Visorak Horde of spiders under his command, and has become an enemy of the Nynrah Ghosts for providing their creations an outlet with which to go rogue.
Now, Sidorak frequently roams Nynrah with his packs of Visorak spiders, leading them on hunts for prey. A bold, charismatic commander, he has won the loyalty and respect of his soldiers, and is now adorned with a ‘medal’ made up of webs, gunk, and other unsavory materials that he treasures as a personal token of comradery. Sidorak is a true commander, personally leading his armies into battle and fighting alongside them. He desires to help his Visorak spread and hunt as they please, and this has put him at odds with multiple Vorox Clans.
Sidorak is a skilled combatant and a brilliant strategist. He wears a breathing apparatus over his lower-face, covering his nose and mouth in order to protect himself from airborne pathogens and other contaminants. On his left arm, he wields the Herding Blade; A powerful artifact that can cast a brilliant crimson light that will summon and herald Sidorak’s armies to himself. As for Sidorak’s right arm, it is cut off at the elbow; Instead, it has a mechanical implant. Hovering slightly beyond this implant is a mechanical tri-claw that can shoot energy-beams from its palm, or Rhotuka that instill loyalty and obedience within targets. Sidorak can launch this cybernetic arm of his forward, latching it onto surfaces before using it as a grapple to pull himself forward with the electro-magnetic connection it has with his implant.
Turaga Dume- Once a lowly errand-boy in the Artidax District, he has since risen to power as a totalitarian dictator controlling most of the region. Dume is strict and harsh, believing in the evils of free will, and desires total control as a means of peace; He has command over the Vahki to enforce his will and the laws that he passes. Local powers frequently ally with Dume, letting him use his Vahki as a replacement for traditional law enforcement, allowing Dume a wide reach over Xia. He is the island’s head of security, and is responsible for cracking down on dissidents and punishing them, as well as brainwashing and encouraging the Xian population to become mindless, obedient workers for all of eternity.
Dume has a stern, tall face, and angular shoulders, constantly walking with his back hunched forward and his arms folded behind him. He wears a clean, dark-red uniform, with a coat, hat, and black boots to match. Dume believes in total discipline over himself, and can be found frequently strutting the halls of a Vahki Hive, allowing zero reprieve in the face of his duties. He oversees all actions and data from his Vahki and frequently collaborates with Xian powers on suppressing riots, unions, and other forms of rebellion.
The Shadowed One- An ancient warlord and the leader/co-founder of the Dark Hunters. The Shadowed One has no known origin nor name; His earliest appearances were as far back as the War of Six Kingdoms, at least. Back then, he led a cruel mercenary organization known as the Dark Hunters alongside his lieutenant and co-founder Ancient. Centuries of success on various missions and assassinations have earned him Xia’s most powerful crime organization. The Shadowed One operates from within the Odina Fortress, having a hand in brutal murders, thefts, and other various crimes as he seeks to consolidate power for himself.
Prideful to a fault, he is a twisted and charismatic individual with a cruel sense of humor. In his quest for power, The Shadowed One has employed researchers and invested others in the creation of unique and dangerous assets for his Dark Hunters. Recently, he has attempted to gather the six fragments of Makuta’s Mask of Life, all of which are inexplicably on Xia, hoping to recreate the world-ending artifact. What exactly he has planned for it is unknown, but knowing him, it certainly can’t be any good.
The Shadowed One can conjure powerful eye-beams that disintegrate and deconstruct anything they touch on the molecular, even atomic, level, granting the warlord the ultimate offense. He wields a staff capable of summoning and creating crystalline formations that he can control and carry through the air as if by telekinesis, and The Shadowed One has used many gems to slaughter enemies or subdue them. In addition to this, he can conjure a Rhotuka; One that temporarily inflicts devastating madness of any sort onto victims. The Shadowed One is a skilled, experienced combatant, and with his skills combined with his powerful abilities, he is an unstoppable opponent.
He possesses one additional, terrifying ability as well; Those foolish enough to challenge The Shadowed One in his own throne room will sometimes find themselves unable to move from their positions upon confronting him, as if their own feet were attached to the floor. By the time his rebels realize this, it is too late- The Shadowed One will unleash his eye-beams, vaporizing them all as they cannot move out of the way. Whatever the nature of this invincible ability, it is the final seal on the apparent unstoppable power of the mercenary-king.
Spiriah- A brilliant and disgracted scientist, Spiriah was once a member of the Nynrah Ghosts. However, his own incompetence and poor handling of the Nynrah Incident, in addition to being somewhat negligent in containing the leak of VISORAK, led to his reputation being tarnished. Even so, he retained membership amongst the Nynrah Ghosts, until a botched experiment involving the Skakdi Clan of Zakaz resulted in them becoming far more dangerous, temperamental, and difficult to control than intended.
With the Skakdi incident as the final straw, Spiriah was exiled and disgraced from the Nynrah Ghosts. Cast out and bitter, Spiriah quickly found work from The Shadowed One, who was eager to employ his skills. Spiriah happily performed experiments with the intent of furthering the Dark Hunters’ power, proving his intelligence and hidden potential. With Spiriah clearly a viable researcher, The Shadowed One eventually entrusted him with Makuta’s notes, gathered from the Mask Hoarder’s abanoned lab by Dweller. With additional resources straight from Okoto, Spiriah set to work dissecting and discerning the very nature of Life energy itself, eventually implementing his findings into various experiments, many of which became Dark Hunters themselves.
Having turned his life around after his past failures, Spiriah went on to help lead experiments on the Kanohi Dragon alongside Vortixx Industries. However, he disappeared after going on an expedition to Nynrah, hoping to gather resources and intel; Attempts to locate him (or his body) have failed, and the Dark Hunter Tracker has been unable to find anything sufficient enough with which to track down Spiriah. Presumably, he has been killed by the Vorox- Or perhaps by the Nynrah Ghosts, who did not want their academic knowledge to be shared amongst the Dark Hunters, regretting their exile of Spiriah?
The Shadowed One himself in unsure… Regardless, Spiriah was an innovative individual who could’ve unlocked many more forbidden secrets of Life had he not disappeared- Perhaps, with the proper resources, he could’ve even gone on to rival Makuta himself! Not that it mattered, because Makuta, too, has perished…
Trydahk- The leader of the Nynrah Ghosts and its ‘high priest’, Trydahk is considered the most brilliant and esteemed member of the group. His intelligence and work has helped spawn and pioneer multiple Xian inventions, including the lethal VISORAK, or the Zamor Launcher. The space-warping Trydahk Pods are named after the Nynrah Ghost himself, and he desires to unlock the secrets of reality at any cost; No matter how many innocent lives must be sacrificed, or how much destruction he must cause. To him, understanding everything is the only thing that matters, and Knowledge is his peace of mind.
Intriguingly, Trydahk has been around since the very inception of the Nynrah Ghosts, several decades ago. And yet, he does not seem to be any older than he currently is, despite his age back then meaning he should be dead by now. Who knows what experiments he performed on himself to allow this?
Nektann- A brutal Skakdi warlord, Nektann was named after the powerful Xian war-machines that plagued Zakaz alongside other machinations of destruction. An unstoppable brute, Nektann quickly rose to power amongst the Skakdi, challenging other warlords and defeating them in combat. Now, he has practically reunited the Skakdi clans back into one, promising his brethren glory and conquest upon the rest of Zakaz.
Tall and thuggish, Nektann is nevertheless cunning enough to have earned control over the Skakdi. He wields an ornate Crescent Scythe in combat, and is a loud and boisterous individual who will happily partake in carnage. Unsurprisingly, Nektann is seen as ‘undignified’ by other Xians, but he doesn’t let this get to him. He knows the Skakdi are looked down upon as modified ‘freaks’, but he figures that will change when he marches upon Zakaz and becomes one of the Powers That Be.
Nektann frequently rides to combat, leading his armies on mobile war-machines and vehicles. He himself rides a large one equipped with a massive grinder-wheel on the front. Additionally, he has a pet Muaka adorned in spiked armor. He got the beast after buying it off of the Dark Hunters, who themselves got it from Umarak on a whim. Nektann is proud of his exotic pet and likes to boast of its foreign, mysterious origins, but some Xians doubt the validity of his claims- They believe the Muaka is just another manufactured bioweapon, an assertion that greatly angers him.

---------------------------------------
They say, happiness comes in waves.
You took that quite literally and decided to leave everything that had weighed you down behind for a few weeks. Work, an ex-boyfriend that had cheated on you with his ex, the hectic life in general.
No, you were not sticking your head in the sand…just your toes! You needed to clear your head, breath the sea-air, feel the warm wind on your skin, the sand under your feet and let your mind relax in a hammock under the palm trees.
So, here you were. Standing at the shoreline, looking at the vast, blue green ocean that touched your feet with every new wave that tried to reach dry sand.
Closing your eyes with a smile, you took in the first rays of sunshine that the new dawn gifted you after your long journey. It had cost you quite a little fortune to get here, but it already had been worth it. The instance you dropped your bags, got rid of your shoes and ran down the few steps from your private cabin into the warm sand you felt a weight lift of your shoulders. An easing breath left your lungs. The next wave drenched your jeans. With a laugh you walked a few steps into the water and kicked the ensuing wave, splashing seawater onto yourself. Damn, that felt good.
Half soaked you walked out of the water a few minutes later and took in the view.
You had asked for a cabin on the far end of the little island. As private and small as this resort was, there wouldn´t have been any direct neighbours anyway, but you wanted the seclusion, the feeling of being alone. You could only make out one other path leading to a cabin before the natural shape of the island took a turn and secluded those two lodges. The very friendly driver, who had driven you and your luggage in a golf cart to your home for the next weeks, told you that there were only 3 other guests on the island. 2 of them pretty close to the central building that hosted a restaurant and a bar. You and one other person on the far end seeking seclusion and serenity.
Walking back to your cabin, you took it in for real now. The wooden home looked like out of an island dream. Dark wood, light, flowy- white curtains that swayed in the sea breathe through the wide-open double door windows. A solid roof but covered with palm-leaves gave it the typical beach flair. Inside, in an open space was a little kitchen, a lounge area and a table with 4 chairs. Secluded but with a phenomenal view of the beach was the bedroom with a double bed facing the ocean. Behind another door was a bathroom with a tub also facing the ocean. It really was heaven on earth.
After unpacking and changing out of your wet clothes you went outside again. In front of your cabin was a colourful hammock waiting for you. The palm trees offered a shadowy place to get a little nap in after traveling for a whole day and some hours to get to paradise. It did not take long for you to drift of. The soft sway, the warmth and the sea air adding to your tiredness, knocked you out quickly.
The first day was over pretty quickly. After sleeping peacefully in that hammock, getting some food into your hungry stomach and ordering the things you would need to cook for yourself the next days you saw that the sun was slowly setting again. Taking a stroll along the beach seemed like a good idea since you were well and rested now.
You did not bother to put on shoes, you just went directly to the shoreline in your short pants, the Bikini-top and the light blouse open on top to spare you the agony of a sunburn on the first day. The wet sand and the warm water felt so good on your feet that you walked for a good while before you sat down in the dry sand to watch the sunset. It really was a beautiful sight. The sky began to change from purest blue to the most extraordinary yellow, orange and red segue you had ever seen. Totally mesmerised you watched the sun kiss the ocean as someone walked into your view on the shoreline. He lifted a hand in greeting and stepped out of direct view again.
“Sorry, didn´t want to interrupt your sight!” He said with a deep and smooth voice and added before you could answer “Have a nice evening!” and continued on his way.
A bit louder you said to his tall, walking form.
“No worries, this won´t be my last sunset in paradise. You too!”  He half turned with his next steps and you saw him nod and wave again. You lifted your hand too and smiled a little before turning your head back to the spectacle before you. When the last bit of the sun went into her ocean-bed you stood up and started to walk again, collecting driftwood on the way. On your way back to your cabin you had to walk past the one before yours. Since you were walking along the shoreline you would not disrupt the privacy of its occupant.
“Beautiful view…” That deep voice again. Your head snapped up. Leaning on a palm tree you could make out the shadow of the tall man. “Oh, sorry! Who´s interrupting the view now…” You chuckled and pointed to the shadow of the hammock before your cabin “…Just wanted to get back....”
The soft breeze carried an easy-going, deep chuckle to your ears.
“Now that would ruin my beautiful view…”
It took you a moment before you got the gist of the words and laughed quietly. A smile lit up your face, but he would not be able to see it, would he?
“Well…” you started walking again “…then I am sorry to ruin it…” You put your windswept hair back behind your ear. “…maybe you do have more luck come tomorrow!”
Now a deep laugh resonated from his tall form. “I shall look for a shooting star and wish on it!”
That voice sounded very British and very ear pleasing. You grinned as you kept walking back to your cabin. “Good night!” He said louder and pushed himself off the tree with a foot.
“Good night!” You answered half turning but continuing your way. The shadow of the man told you he was tall and lean, his hand ruffled through his hair as he watched you for a second before you turned around.
The next day started late due to jet-lag but nobody was complaining that you were sleeping in, the bed next to you empty. For a second you thought about how nice it would be to enjoy the view from this bed with someone by your side. But then again, you never had a problem with being alone and you were certainly not missing your ex. That chapter of your life got closed some months ago. You stretched your limbs and got up. After donning a sporty bikini, you stepped out started to grin and walked onto the beach. The moment your feet hit the toasty warm sand you took off in a run with a laugh.
Some hundred meters away a head snapped up in another hammock and a laugh escaped in a deep male tone as he saw you running into the water, jumping over waves and somewhat elegantly but definitely joyfully taking a header into the ocean. Yes, he thought, unquestionably a beautiful view. His breath caught as he saw you come out of the water some minutes later, disappearing into your own hammock. Now he needed some cooling-down…
There was nothing better than salty water on your skin, drying off while swaying in a warm summer breeze. In a hammock. Under a palm tree. Watching the ocean. That was until you saw your “neighbour” walking towards the water. A low sitting navy blue shorts the only cover his undoubtedly hot body wore. Even from afar you could see the defined muscles on his back. Changing your position a little to unashamedly watch him getting nearer and nearer to the water you laughed as he too jolted into a run and elegantly took a header. You pushed your sunglasses up on your nose and let one foot dangle out of the hammock to give it another push as he emerged from the water again and walked to shore. His hand pushing back his wet hair.
“Oh, blimey this is just cruel!” You gasped out as you saw his wet torso in full display and instantly felt a pang of guilt for ogling him like that. “Talk about a beautiful view...” You murmured and laughingly shook your head, closed your eyes and dropped the straw-hat onto your face with a groan.
The soft sway of the hammock calmed you down again… as did the sound of the ocean.
You smiled softly and took a deep, deep breath.
“Hammock for two…how convenient…” You heard a deep voice say as your hat got lifted off your face and some drops of water hit your warm skin. Before you could say something, before you could even grasp what was happening a wet body balanced itself into the hammock. Blue eyes looked deep into yours and the weight of his lean body made you tilt sideways, flush against him. A smirk toyed with his lips as his tongue came out to wet them. “Hi, thought I´d come over to properly introduce myself…”
“Oh…” was all you got out before he grabbed your waist, tugged you on top of him and introduced his lips to yours in a hot, sizzling hot kiss. His big hands stroked simultaneously up and down your back. He grabbed the back of your head and your butt and squeezed while his tongue darted out to seek shelter with yours. “Hi!” He grinned near your lips afterwards and put a strand of hair behind your ear before he began a new kiss that let your skin tingle as if electricity pulsed through your veins.
A honk from an arriving golf cart yanked you up straight. Whirling your arms around like a damn bird wanting to take flight you almost toppled out of the hammock.
“Your delivery Miss!”
Looking around a little dazed you just nodded and tried to get a grip on your surroundings again. You were still laying in the hammock in front of your cabin…but alone.
Dang! You must have been fallen asleep right after that handsome man walked out of the water, initiating a wet dream instantly.
Rolling your eyes at yourself you got out of the hammock as the delivery man came out of your cabin again and said his goodbyes. Going inside yourself to put everything away you grunted with a breathless laugh. “Honk if you´re horny!”

all.....all of the fanfic asks :>
Hey! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
1. If you’re an author, how many WIPs do you currently have? (Be honest!)
Two, if I only count the ones that have at least part of an actual scene written for them and which I still intend to finish someday. (Because otherwise, they're not works in progress, are they? :P) Three if I count the one that's still in the idea stages but is starting to be fleshed out a bit more.
2. What’s next on your ‘to-read’ list? (Fan fiction or otherwise)
City of Stone and Silence by Django Wexler. Everyone, please give his books a try if you're into fantasy. They're so good. He's written for adults, middle grade, and YA, and all of it is fantastic. He's probably my second-favorite author atm (because I love Seanan McGuire and her writing too much to give the top spot to anyone else XD).
3. Do you prefer canonverse or AUs?
Yes.
(Seriously, I like both. I guess my very favorite would be canon divergence—where we're still in the canon universe but one or more things change)
4. What fandom’s/ship’s fan fiction do you read the most?
I don't think there's a clear winner? I bounce around a lot because I read too fast and am too picky with my preferences for one fandom to sustain me. I guess out of the fics I'm following that are still updating at least somewhat frequently, it'd probably be more-or-less a tie between BnHA and Trollhunters/Tales of Arcadia. But that only means, like, 5 – 6 fics each compared to 3 – 4 for most other fandoms, so. Not a big difference. ^^;
5. What’s a crackship you love?
I…can't think of any. ^^;
6. What’s the last thing you read that made you laugh?
I don't really remember. Maybe the newest October Daye book? Tybalt can usually make me smile even if he wasn't in this one much.
7. What’s the last thing you read that made you cry?
No idea. ^^; Probably a fanfic, but beats me which one it was.
8. Bed sharing or roommates AU?
Hmm…roommates, I guess?
9. Fake dating or arranged marriage?
Probably arranged marriage.
10. Mutual pining or enemies to friends to lovers?
Enemies to friends to lovers.
11. Kid fic or childhood friends?
This…depends a lot on how you define kidfic. If it's "the characters raise a kid together" then…I'm not all that interested in either, but I'd probably take childhood friends, depending on the plots of the individual stories. If it's "the adult characters when they were kids", then…they're almost the same thing, unless you're writing adult characters who grew up as childhood friends, and either way I have no real preference for either. If you define kidfic to include de-aging fics, then I'll take kidfic. Such a surprise, given my current WIP, I'm sure. :P
12. Friends with benefits or secret dating?
I guess secret dating, though I'm not fond of either.
13. Exes or established relationship?
Established relationship.
14. (For authors) Post a line of dialogue from one of your WIPs without context.
“Perhaps we should give him what he wants. There is no need for him to remain on the island when he is this desperate to leave.”
15. Post the last line you wrote without context.
Robin's neck prickled. That timing had been far too convenient. The librarian had likely known where the book was the entire time, if there was even a book at all.
(This is technically the last line I edited; the last new line I wrote was in the chapter I just posted and I have no idea which one it would be)
16. Describe your WIP that currently has the highest word count.
That would be Dissonant Echoes, so…The Straw Hats arrive on a mysterious island. Zoro disappears and comes back as a kid with strong negative reactions to the rest of the Straw Hats, and they have to find out what happened and try to fix things.
17. Describe a fic that is still in the ‘ideas’ stage.
A full AU, tentatively titled Praying to Embers. More-or-less modern times. Luffy and his friends come to an island on vacation (still working out which SHs come with him and which they'll meet there). They arrive just in time for a festival celebrating the island's god, Roronoa, and at the festival they meet Zoro, a local who Luffy ropes into being their tour guide. He's not very good at the guiding part, but Luffy's sure they'll be great friends, which is good for Zoro, because he's really going to need some friendly help soon, if he can learn to trust them before it's too late.
This is what I'll be writing after DE, barring a new idea taking me hostage unexpectedly.
18. Do you have a fic reading/writing routine?
Reading, not really, unless you count downloading fics to my kindle and doing most of my reading: in the bathroom, while waiting for laundry or food to be done, when I’m supposed to be sleeping, etc. Well, that and reading on the computer, trying to see the screen past my armful of big fluffy kitty while he kneads my neck and shoulders and arms and face. >.<; Writing, I like to have a cup of tea before I start, I guess? And usually some music.
19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?
I…can't think of any right now. ^^;
20. Do you have a favorite fanfic or author? If so, tag them/post a link and share the love!
I don't think I have a single favorite. I'm not sure I could even narrow it down to a half dozen, haha. But I'll link a few fics (not going to tag anyone because I don't know everyone's tumblr, if they even have one, plus that would be putting myself out there a bit more than I feel comfortable with atm. If one of the authors of these fics see this, I love your work and I'm sorry for being such a shy anxious mess ^^; ).
Going to keep it to one per fandom so this doesn't get obnoxiously long, though for most of them (looking at BnHA, Detective Conan, Coco, and ToA in particular), you can assume there are at least one or two other fics I like just as much as these.
From Muddy Waters, Boku no Hero Academia, by HLine
Want and Need, Fate/Zero x Fate/Stay Night, by Kiiam
The Case of the Missing Detective, Detective Conan, by Utukki
Don't Listen to Kafka (series), Tales of Arcadia, by Archaeopter-ace
A Pound of Flesh, Tokyo Ghoul, by notitlesapply
Population: 1, Voltron: Legendary Defender, by AvaBlook
El Camino a Casa, Coco, by Bookwormgal
The Human Mask, Natsume Yūjin-Chō, by harunekonya
Half of these are WIPs that haven't updated in years, which is really depressing T-T And I'm absolutely sure I forgot some, even limiting it like this, but they'll just have to wait for another time.

Needed Part III
Tumblr media
Before you read, here’s Part I and Part II!
Category: Romantic Fluff
Fandom: One Piece
Characters: Baby 5, Monkey D. Luffy
Requested By: Tastsumi (Ao3)
Cricket song mingled with the droning of soft snores in the fresh night air. The little insects chirped in the clumps of long grasses ringing the small jungle clearing in which Baby 5 and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates snoozed contentedly beneath the stars. Alas, Baby was not sleeping. Her dark eyes fixated on the forest canopy above, where the glimmering stars peeked through the dense network of interlocking branches and waxy leaves to spill dappled white light over her. She clicked her tongue and rolled onto her side, snuggling into the warm fabric of her sleeping bag. No, there was nothing for it; sleep would not find young Baby tonight. Sighing wistfully, she tossed the blankets off herself and rose, stretching her arms above her head and glancing around the clearing.
As it had turned out, the arrival to Zou had been an ordeal in itself. The resident Minks had been hostile at first, for they had suffered an attack by pirates, not a few days before the Sunny’s landing. Then, Luffy and company had learned that their cook, Sanji, had been abducted by the Emperor Big Mom for a political wedding. They established a plan to send half of the crew onward to Wano, where they would infiltrate the populace alongside the Heart Pirates and gather information on their newest enemy, the Emperor Kaido. The other section of the crew would travel to Big Mom’s territory to retrieve their absconded cook. Several of the Minks had even pledged themselves to their cause, which Baby thought very kind of them.
Since the night in the crow’s nest, Baby 5 had not suffered any more nightmares. To be frank, she was a little surprised to be insomnious on this night; she had not given Doflamingo another passing thought. Yet, here Baby was, wide awake in the middle of the night. Perhaps I’ll take a walk, she reasoned. The last late-night jaunt had ended particularly well, so possibly, her little stroll through the lush woods would result in similar luck. Baby retrieved her trusty bazooka, the only relic of her servitude in the Doflamingo syndicate, and then descended the well-worn path leading into the jungle.
The air was alive with the sounds of the lush wilderness. The cricket song was deafening along the path, for the clumpy grasses towered waist-high. Their wispy fronds kissed Baby’s hips and thighs as she strolled down the slight bumpy incline, tickling her skin with their fluffy yellow-green fibers. Fireflies flitted between the thick tree trunks, flickering greeting at Baby as she passed. A tapir lumbered out into the open, its short, stout snout snuffling through the dirt and overturning rocks in search of grubs; Baby 5 politely waited for it to finish its business. The massive creature regarded her with bright, curious eyes and wiggled its short trunk at her before shambling off into the jungle whence it came. She squatted down to observe a troupe of army ants crossing the pathway, careful not to disrupt their march lest she find herself on the business end of their massive mandibles. The forest was very much awake around her, and so Baby 5 found herself even more restless in the throng of its activity.
With a forlorn sigh, she settled herself on a nice, flat rock. Resting her elbows on her knees and pushing her fists into her cheeks, she sulked about her infuriatingly restless mind. With half-lidded eyes, she traced the trail of a meandering stag beetle trundling over the layer of decomposing leaves. It dug its horns into the spongey soil to reveal wriggling white grubs and tiny scuttling roaches. Eat your fill, little stag beetle, she thought morosely. May sleep find you quickly… whenever bugs sleep.
Baby 5 groaned and hung her head between her knees, tearing her hands into her wavy black hair. Her eyes pulsed with their own heartbeat, clearly wishing to close to the night, but her mind was too busy buzzing with energy to allow that to happen. Could I be anxious? She wondered, chewing on the inside of her cheek. Whatever could I be worried about? She sat up on the rock, tapping her pursed lip with the pad of her index finger. If anyone had cause to be anxious, it would be Luffy, considering that one of his trusted comrades had essentially been kidnapped. Yet, the captain seemed cool as a cucumber, albeit a little miffed at the bold-as-brass transgression against this authority.
Baby 5 knitted her eyebrows together as a particular thought occurred to her. Is it possible that Luffy’s reaction to the situation unnerved her, and she wondered if he was restraining his emotions for his comrades’ sakes? It’s as good an explanation as any.
Baby peered out into the gloom as a twig snapped, piercing the air like a gunshot. The cricket song dimmed as the wee insects investigated the incoming creature, and whether it be friend or foe. Baby craned her neck to peek around the bend in the pathway as the sound of crunching dirt loomed closer by the second. She raised an eyebrow when a pair of familiar sandals tromped into view, followed by a straw hat-wearing noiret who was smiling amiably.
“Oh! There you are, Baby,” Luffy called cheerfully when he spotted her perching on the squat rock. He approached her nonchalantly, stopping to place his hands on his hips and gaze out into the night. The crickets had decided that Luffy was not interested in eating them and had begun sounding their cares with fervor. “It’s a lovely night for a walk,” he remarked, turning glittering black eyes on her. She flushed and fidgeted on the rock.
“Yes, I suppose it is…” His lips edged upwards into a smirk, and his eyebrows crept up.
“Having nightmares again?” he asked worriedly, stroking the pad of his thumb underneath her eyes just like he had done a few nights ago. She turned pink and shook her head vehemently, waving her hands in refusal.
“No, no! I promise I’m not,” she insisted. Her hands fell into her lap with a small sigh. Luffy was there, so she might as well openly ponder the intricacies of her psyche. “Truthfully… I’m worried about you, Luffy.” His eyebrows inched further up, touching the roots of his dark hair.
“Me? Why?”
“Well… Aren’t you concerned about Sanji?” Baby 5’s eyes widened when he clenched his jaw and glanced off into the distance once more. A silence settled between them as Luffy searched for his words. When he turned back to her, he gestured to the rock. Baby 5 obediently scooched over to allow him access to the stony perch, and with a long sigh, he eased himself down beside her. He rubbed his hands together slowly, worrying his bottom lip with his teeth.
“Yeah. I am, Baby,” he admitted in a small voice after a few seconds. Baby 5 pressed closer to him and rested her arm on his bicep. She had never heard the sunny, optimistic boy so morose. He laced his fingers together and clenched them so hard that his knuckles glared white. She cooed his name and stroked his arm in an invitation to divulge his complicated feelings to her. “I didn’t wanna say anything, because the others are really worried too… If I had my way, we’d be on Whole Cake Island right now, tearing every house apart lookin’ for him, but… I know that’s dumb. Big Mom is a whole different ball game.” Baby 5’s bottom lip wobbled. His lack of self-confidence broke her heart.
“Luffy, you’ll get Sanji back. I know you will.” He sighed forlornly and hung his head, staring miserably down at his clasped hands. She ran her hand from his shoulder down to his wrist, then forced her fingers in-between his so that she could lace theirs together. Baby gave him a robust and reassuring squeeze, making him peer at her out of his peripheral vision. “You’re the strongest man I’ve ever known. Once you set your mind to something, there’s no stopping you. Big Mom will rue the day she dared to cross you.” A small smile curled onto his lips. He leaned forward to press his forehead against her own, and Baby 5 welcomed it, nestling into him. “Sanji needs you right now, and you’re the type of man that will pull through, no matter the obstacles.”
“Thanks, Baby,” he said softly. She jumped when he suddenly tore away from her to spring from the rock. He flung his arms up into the air and screamed into the night, “Ya hear that, Big Mom? I’m coming to kick your ass! So stay right there so you can get what’s comin’ to ya, ya ugly old hag!” As his voice rippled through the forest, bouncing off the tree trunks and waxy leaves, the nightbirds and crickets silenced in awe. For several seconds after his enthusiastic yowling, it was eerily quiet. Finally, a lone owl decided to hoot back in admiration. “Ah, that felt good,” Luffy exhaled exultantly. Baby 5 giggled. It was so remarkable how he could switch from depressed to determined in a mere instant.
“I’m glad I could make you feel better,” Baby smiled as she stood from the rock. Luffy turned to her and opened an arm invitingly, and she immediately snuggled close to him. Rubbing the small of her back with his big, calloused hand, he leaned down to press a kiss to the top of her head. She squeezed her eyes shut as a big smile bloomed on her face. It always made her so happy to feel that she was needed. Although she no longer felt the compulsion to be necessary twenty-four hours a day, to be reminded of her necessity in someone’s life was still gratifying. Luffy continued to nuzzle his nose into her coarse black hair, until a long, loud yawn split his face. He smacked his lips together and then tiredly mumbled into her scalp, “Le’s go back to bed… I’m sleepy…”
Baby 5 chuckled and rubbed his chest soothingly, then nodded. He wrapped his arms tight around her body, insistent on cuddling as close as possible to the young woman, and so they began to awkwardly penguin-waddle back up the slope. “Baby…?”
“Yes, Luffy?”
“I’m gonna bring Sanji back. Jus’ you watch.” He sounded half-asleep as he walked, his voice drawling with exhaustion. “I’ll meet up with all of you in Wano so we can kick Kaido’s ass too…” Baby 5 hummed merrily and affectionately stroked his forearms as he tightened them around her.
“I know you will- because I need you, Luffy.” He responded with a mumble that was half-gibberish. Baby 5 chuckled and continued to lug his heavy, sleep-deadened body up the path even as her own eyes began to droop with the onset of drowsiness.
I’ll be waiting… because that is what is needed of me.

Word Count: 2.4K words.

Tumblr media
Not long after leaving Fishman Island, the Strawhats reached a small island. A quiet peaceful island. The very first island without any sort of conflict going on. As awed as they were, they took this chance to rest, get to explore the dense forest and get enough supplies for their trip deeper into the New World.
"Two days" answered an elder lady after Nami asked her how long would take the log pose to charge.
Two days was the perfect time for a decent rest.
It was fate what pulled you towards the newcomers. And soon you found yourself telling the pirates about the island. And being the warm welcoming people the Strawhats were, they invited you to the small campfire they were having that night at the beach close to the Thousand Sunny.
Moved by their friendly ways, you agreed. A few townspeople were there too, all of them chatting with the Strawhwats, hearing to their endless marvelous adventures and stories. And as the moon made its way across the nightsky, people left little by little, back to their homes for a good night sleep.
Except for you. You were so immersed into your conversation with the captain and the first mate, the two of them being a considerably weird dynamic duo. Until eventually, you fell asleep just like the crew. The remnants of what was once a blazing fire were still warm enough to keep the surroundings warm. Cooing you just perfectly.
The kind of deep sleep you were having was the kind of sleep that made you feel far beyond refreshed by the morning, waking up with the energy to sail around the world without a single drop of sweat. However, something woke you up. Among the soft snores of the pirates, there was yet another sound that woke you up. A gentle almost audible whimper.  You followed the whimper until you reached Strawhat Luffy, and noticed the tears falling from his closed eyes.
For the last two years, every now and then Luffy would have nightmares, reliving over and over Ace's death. And the pain of having lost both his brothers made him feel lonely at times. However, no one in the crew knew about this, no one knew about how most nights their captain had a terrible night. Luffy never told anyone about his nightmares. No one was aware of it until now.
"Luffy" you whispered kneeling next to him and shaking him lightly, however, there was no response “Luffy”
After calling his name a few times, he finally snapped his eyes open and looked confused at the night sky.
"(Name)" he whispered cleaning his tears right away.
"Are you alright? You were having a nightmare" you murmured worried.
"Y-yeah..." he lied sitting up. "I-I'm fine. It was just a dream" as much as he smiled, you could still see the pain clinging to him.
"You don't seem very convinced, are you sure you’re alright?" You added and sat on the sand into a more comfortable position as Luffy simply remained quiet "Here" you opened your arms, to which Luffy quickly responded to and hugged you.
After you wrapped your arms around him, he understood this was all he needed. Who’d say how a couple of arms holding you tightly could soothe just a piercing pain right away? Feeling your arms wrapped around him made him feel some sort of comfort he hadn't felt in a while. And the sudden realization overwhelmed him and he started sobbing once again. His face hidden your shoulders, he clung to your embrace as he sobbed quietly.
"It's okay" you whispered hugging him even tighter. "Its okay. Everything will be fine" you purred, your voice gently caressing the open wound Ace left behind, encouraging him to sob slightly louder.
He didn’t take long before he fell asleep in your arms. His breathing had now slowed down and got deeper. He no longer was shaking from the sobbing, and his body was relaxed against yours. You called his name, in an attempt to know whether he was asleep or not. And after no receiving any sign or answer, you assumed he was asleep.
Thinking of the not so comfortable position the two of you were, you decided to put him back on the ground. Gently, you put him on the sand next to his iconic straw hat. Such a wide smile, and yet, he’s haunted at night by something horrible, you thought, what could be causing him so much pain?
You stared at him for a couple of seconds and before you were able to stand up, you felt something tugging your shirt. You turned around to find Luffy his eyes still closed.
"(Name)?" He purred. "Would you sleep next to me?" He opened his eyes a little. A tiny trace of fear showing up within them, as you understood he was afraid of having nightmares again.
With a painful heart squeeze, you nodded and lied next to him. No words were needed in that moment. He snuggled next to you like a scared kitten as you protectively cuddled him, stroking his hair. He mumbled something with his face buried underneath your jaw, something you interpreted as a ‘thank you’. Your fingers ran through his hair, massaging his scalp, as the most peculiar warmth ran through your body. A sudden urge to protect him from any danger within the world fueled, as you thought how one of the most wanted criminals by the World Government snuggled vulnerable next to you.
"It's alright. I got you" you murmured, feeling him nod, his face buried on your neck.
The next morning, all of the Strawhats felt rather confused when they found the two of you cuddling. Luffy wasn't a flirty guy, and last night you didn't seem to flirt to anyone in the crew. And seeing the two of you cuddled up in a messy limb tangle surprised all of them. Not that they really cared, but they’d never seen this sort of behaviour from his spontaneous captain.
After waking up, Luffy was once again his usual self. However, he remained close to you throughout the day. As you kept talking to them, you got to know a little bit better the infamous Strawhat Pirates and feeling quite charmed by each and everyone of them. As the Strawhats got to better appreciate your gentle and open personality, understanding why would Luffy feel so drawn to you.
That night, Sanji made dinner in the Sunny, and invited you to tag along. The usual cheerful and yet chaotic atmosphere filled the kitchen. Everyone was laughing and talking, making you wonder why would the Marines consider them such a threat. They all seemed pretty funny and chill in their own unique way.
After everyone had finished eating, Luffy grabbed your hand and pulled you with him outside the kitchen. With his usual warm smile, he showed you around, all the wonders the Thousand Sunny had to offer, only to fuel your curiosity for the crew and how it was like to travel with them. Eventually, you sat with the captain on the deck, as your hands played with the grass.
"(Name)" you met Luffy's eyes as his smile was now shining brighter than any star in the sky. "I want you to join my crew!" He cheered.
You blinked several times, processing what he'd just told you.
"B-but, I'm not a pirate...I-I..." Were the only words your brain got to come up with and the excitement now fueling your heart urged you to say yes.
"You're kind! And everyone likes you! Besides, you're a hunter right? You know how to use knives and use a bow and arrow"
"I mean yes...I don't know if I'm strong enough, though. You guys have quite a reputation..."
"You can always train with Zoro if you want to get stronger! Ussop is our sniper, you can train with him too!"
A sudden urge for adventure, and Luffy’s wide smile seemed to make your head spin, and hypnotize you. Except for a tiny voice at the back of your head telling you to really think about it instead of just going with your first instinct. After all, Piracy was far more complicated than just sailing the seas.
"Think about it! We'll be leaving tomorrow" Luffy said bumping his forehead with yours. “I’d really like to have you in the crew!”
You closed your eyes, sighing deeply. His close proximity only made your heart beat faster, as the tiny voice seemed to get louder. "Alright” You began “I will think about it, though...I'll tell you my answer tomorrow, alright?" As you spoke, Luffy sat back, his huge eyes on yours with a hopeful spark behind them.
"Shishishishi" Luffy giggled. "You're gonna say yes!"
~
The amount of time Luffy clung to you like a koala only seemed to increase with the days. Not that you complained about it. As a matter of fact, his constant presence was beginning to feel like a drug. Ever since you’d joined the Strawhat crew, Luffy seemed to always want you by his side.
Up to this point, everyone knew you liked each other, the constant knowing looks made you blush constantly, and having Luffy close to you most of the time only made it worse. Your feelings for him were so obvious to everyone except for Luffy himself, who wasn't even aware of his own feelings for you.
In luffy's eyes, you were his closest friend, and he loved hugging you, and was constantly with his arms wrapped around you. He eventually realised that he wouldn't have nightmares when he slept with you, which only encouraged him to spend almost every night with you. Whether of it was you falling asleep next to him in the guys quarters, or him in the girl's room.
And over time, it was not only hugs. Forehead and cheek kisses eventually became a thing. And soon, Luffy found this constant urge to kiss your cheek whenever he was hugging you. On the other hand, you’d always kiss his forehead or the top of his head whenever he snuggled next to you. The crew found unbearingly adorable, and at the same time they couldn’t believe Luffy was still not aware of his feelings for you, and everyone wanted to slap some sense into the captain Even with that, everyone already considered you a couple.
It was until one day, you got out of the shower into the girls room, already changed, and found Luffy on your bed contemplating the ceiling.
"Hey there" you broke the silence as Luffy looked at you and smiled widely sitting up.
"I discovered something" He cheered. “And I have to tell you about it!”
"What is it?" You asked curious walking to your bed, as Luffy jumped to the ground and grabbing your hand at once.
"Let's go outside first. It's nice and sunny out there!" He guided you to the Sunny’s head.
Not only Luffy’s spot, but whenever he just wanted to spend a bit of quiet time with you away from the rest of the crew he’d take you there and cuddle you for a couple of hours. Just the two of you, in silence, looking at the ocean.
"Robin said I should tell you about my feelings for you" He started so casually as your heart stopped for a brief second, amazed at his straight forwardness.
"She did?" You chuckled awkwardly, thinking how maybe she did that on purpose.
"While you were training with Zoro...she asked me if I had feelings for you” He began “and I didn't know what she meant by that. She started explaining me what it's like to have feelings for someone, and everything she said is exactly what I feel when I'm with you. She then told me that if I had feelings for you, I should tell you" As much as you tried to fight your blushing, it wasn’t until he said the last part that indeed, Robin had said that on purpose.
You stared at him feeling how your heart squeezed painfully from how adorable and oblivious Luffy was. He was talking about his feelings for you so casually, while you were struggling to even bring yourself to open your mouth. You felt yourself blush as not a single sound made it out of your mouth and you leaned forward and pecked his lips gently.
"Luffy, I-" you stuttered as you met his eyes, feeling your face turn hotter and hotter "I have feelings for you too"
Luffy’s smile grew wider across his face as he pulled you in, wrapping his arms around you, burying his face on your neck and breathing in the scent he adored so much.
"Does that make you my girlfriend?" He said breaking the hug.
"Do you want me to be your girlfriend?" You giggled.
Luffy chuckled and stole a gentle kiss from your lips, just like you’ve done before. He didn't know much about relationships but he knew people kissed their significant other on the lips. Conecting the two dots wasn’t hard for him, making him want to dance and sing filled with happiness.
"I want you to be my girlfriend" He said cupping your face in his hands and giving you the smile that always melted your heart.
"Then I will" you murmured, this time it was you burying your face on his neck as Luffy hummed in approval.
Luffy kissed your head before wrapping his arms around you once more and squeezing you. He thought about what Robin told him earlier, and thought it had been a good idea to tell you about his feelings. It surprised him that you felt the same for him. A warm feeling ran through his body making him feel genuinely happy.
From the deck, all the strawhats gathered close to the helm, all of them silent, hearing your conversation with Luffy, appreciating the scene. All of them with smiles on their faces, warmed by the sweet moment you two were having. Franky and Chopper sobbing, as Brook was murmuring something about composing a nice tune for the two of you, to which Sanji agreed and mentioned something about having a small feast to celebrate.
In the meantime, you were cuddling with Luffy on the Sunny’s head just like you’d always do. Smiles drawn on both of your faces. Luffy was always a very touchy person, and loved hugging those he cared for. Your hugs however, felt the warmest, the sweetest of all. He felt genuinely happy that he’d asked you to join his crew.
