This is a portrait of Rebecca Jacques from Poseyvulle IN that was painted in 1841. While she’s the prominent subject of the painting, the subject of this post is actually the stenciled wall behind her. The newest vintage art book in the shop is all about wall stencils found in early American houses of New England in the 170Os and 1800s. It’s a fascinating look into the lives of stencil artists, the history of the houses they painted and the colorful stencil designs they made. The most well known artist was Moses Eaton Jr. (pictured in this batch) whose work can still be seen in some historic houses in Maine and New Hampshire. Included here is a photo of a room he stenciled in the mid 1800s and the replicated illustration of his design ( a pineapple!) for the book. 🍍 Back in those days when the desire to add color and interest to interior spaces was strong, but people couldn’t afford wallpaper, wall stencils were the next best thing. Now they are a prized example of antique folk art. 🎨 This really interesting book retells the whole history of the craft and also offers guidance on how to replicate these antique designs!
