(sorry this isn't answered in ask format but the new tumblr editor locked me out of the damn post after i saved it as a draft 😭)
There is a point where Sun Wukong characters are just characters based on him rather than adaptations of him, but I do not think that is the case for LMK because LMK is, at its heart, a JTTW continuation.
I feel like as long as a story is still trying to present Sun Wukong within the context of either Journey to the West, or within Buddhism, Daoism, and Chinese folk religion more generally, then they're still Sun Wukong adaptations despite their changes.
A lighter case of this would be Sun Wukong from Gene Luen Yang's Monkey Prince, which is set in the DC universe and has Sun Wukong fighting against DC characters like Darkseid or whatever, but is still undoubtedly Sun Wukong from JTTW. His stories and myths still exist in-universe and he's shown to be what people expect from Sun Wukong as a mythological figure. A more extreme case would probably be Sun Wukong Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint. An incredibly different setting, not really Earth in the same sense, but Sun Wukong's still Sun Wukong, Heaven's Equal etc etc (from what I've heard at least). As a constellation, he also clearly has that celestial/heavenly angle. You get the sense that these SWKs have gone through JTTW and are just chiming in/having a role in new stories after the fact.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel like to be inspired rather than an adaptation, there needs to be a different intention in the altering of Sun Wukong's general accepted canon. They have to be altering Sun Wukong with the actual intention to separate. Generally, I think there are three categories that characters fall into when they are not considered Sun Wukong adaptations and instead should be called Sun-Wukong-inspired. Some of these typings are more vibe-based but I think the most clear-cut type is the last one I describe.
The first type are characters that take notes from Sun Wukong purely in design and style, but are not even really trying to be Sun Wukong in anything other than name or aesthetic. (Ex: WangZheRongYao's Shattered Image Hologram Sun Wukong skin)
Tumblr media
The second type are characters that basically take Sun Wukong and plop him into a completely different setting/story, often altering his backstory and personality to fit the piece but still staying somewhat true to mythical Sun Wukong. A character that is recognizably Sun Wukong and owning it, but still actively trying to be its own thing that isn't Sun Wukong. You could point to these SWKs and say that they're in an incredibly divergent AU or something. (Ex: God of High School Sun Wukong) Though this category is kind of own its own sliding scale, as I feel like you could make an argument that Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint SWK belongs here instead, but his incredibly JTTW design and role as a god-adjacent figure in the webtoon makes me wanna lean towards the adaptation angle, but then again I've never read the webtoon myself
Tumblr media
The third type is characters whose backstories and general inspiration take heavily from Sun Wukong but go completely in their own direction with their own story. They owe their existence to Sun Wukong, but they are not trying to be Sun Wukong at all and actively trying to be their own independent characters. (Ex: DBZ Son Goku, One Piece Monkey D. Luffy, Inuyasha, RWBY Sun Wukong)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah basically I feel like LMK Sun Wukong does not cross the line into being SWK-inspired and is still a SWK adaptation, albeit one with an altered characterization. Just toss him into the pile all the other badly characterized SWKs from the budget JTTW movies that come out every year.

important question. were you a Nezha kid or a Sun Wukong kid growing up? (or secret third thing calabash brothers kid)
Nezha kid if I had to choose? But tbh I did not get to watch a lot of TV growing up, and those we did were the same VHS tapes over and over.
We had a couple live action JTTW movies I think but they were the sort burned onto CDs that they’d sell in random collections on the streets back in the day. We have one cartoon movie that is also JTTW I think (demon slayer? Spider demon? Idk, there was a kid with red hair and huadian and a purple dudou as a second villain, is all I remember). Most Chinese movies I watched were xianxia or historical dramas my parents watched after they put us to bed and then we sneaked back downstairs and watched from behind the couch. (We usually got found out when someone died and either me or my sibling had an existential crisis about it and started crying LOL)
Actually the main Chinese cartoon I watched growing up was 大头儿子小头爸, which we had a collection of… but I actually hated that show a lot because it gave me horrible second hand embarrassment whenever the characters gut up to shit, which was practically that whole show. Plus it was one of those eerie 90s animations, which in retrospect is very aesthetic but as a kid was nightmare fuel.

No but like I'm so torn between wanting SWK, DBK, and PIF having history together and they used to be really close. So when they meet again in the flaming mountains their fight has some ✨ emotional drama✨ but also it's hilarious to think Sun Wukong doesn't remember the names of a fraction of the 72 demon kings he allied with so when DBK pops up being like "HAHAHAH SUN WUKONG... AFTER 5 CENTURIES...I'M HERE TO EXACT MY VENGEANCE!!" Wukong is just like "Oh heeeyy--who are you again?" 💀

Do you have any favorite Tumblr artists and their AUS about jttw? If you have these great selection of stuff (love them btw) surely you'd have recommendations right?
Sorry if I seem rude, I just like jttw a whole lot 😅
Okay so there are so many good artists that I love for their content - hell, even if I'm not into the AU's their artwork is just...OUGH. It's sublime! Hope you're ready for a BIG LIST and I will mostly be gushing (especially since my main blog is shadowbanned apparently and I can't send them asks to gush at them, thanks Tumblr >:\ )
ANYWAY;
First off @antidotefortheawkward - his artwork is just so delightful and I remember seeing his JTTW vines his did ages ago, or at least it felt ages ago and falling in love with the stuff. The detail, the heartfelt work behind it all, it's gorgeous I love his stuff. It's obvious this is very close to home for him and means a lot and it shows with how much he put into it.
@sketching-shark - another huge inspiration for me to get back into the swing of JTTW, practically reinvigorated why I adored the book to begin with and their art? They don't stray into AU's but the amount of beautifully eldritch body horror that they explore which is inherent to JTTW is so amazing. Their inking and use of color and space is phenomenal. They also have wonderful things to say on Journey to the West and I love seeing them get anons curious of the story just to see their answer.
@sunny-days-and-warm-mournings - Sunny and I talk about our AU's so much, they have soooooo many cool AU's and ideas for Sun Wukong and their artwork? Holy crap. You can feel every passionate stroke in their work, the lineart, the colors, the use of traditional texture atop digital media. You will love what they've done to the 2015 Hero is Back Wukong SO MUCH if he is your favourite.
@lavaflowe - Gosh I love Lava's work. It's so nice and vibrant and fluffy long haired Wukong, my beloved, I adore him. They put some amazing work into the characters and have such a sublime shape language. They definitely know their stuff with Journey to the West and it shows in the intricate pieces they've made - like the ones for Wukong's trials against the Three Daoist Immortals which are GRUESOME yet gorgeous. You will love their stuff.
@semisolidmind - Semi is a really skilled artist who knows how to draw some damn fine chompers. I'm personally not a fan of Yandere, however that doesn't take away from Semi's excellent color usage and shadows, as well as just over all character personality in general. Their drawings look one step away from full blown animation in my opinion. And if you're a fan of ITTW I'm sure you'll enjoy their work and if you don't? I'm sure you'll enjoy the artwork anyway because it's lovely!
@lavenderskye29 - Lavender does a bit of Yandere/Bad End stuff here and there for people not into that, but I'm just smitten with their art style and how they write the characters. The character acting, the smooth linework, the shape language, the attitude, everything about their artwork screams of a professional animator in the making and I always like to check out their stuff now and then. So should you! (They also draw Undertale boney boys for people interested in that) Also this is going to sound weird but seeing their self insert being fawned over by monster boys makes me feel very seen.
@sixteenthchapel - Sixteenth's Wukong makes me wanna pinch his cheeks, he's so delightfully scrungly and full of grump. Their style makes me think of those wonderful graphic novels I'd get from Forbidden Planet and I adore how much they put into the boys, all of them look fantastic (I'm very happily biased with Pigsy being inspired by Monkey Magic). They don't dabble in AU's often HOWEVER their designs for Wukong's trusted four are breathtaking. Their vision of Ma, Ba, Beng and Liu is one of if not my complete favourite iteration of them.
@celestialkiri - LOOK AT THEM. LOOK AT THEM THEY'RE BRAND NEW TO JTTW CONTENT AND THEY'RE MAKING SUCH GOOD STUFF. AAA. But seriously, celestialkiri's work has such a good style to it, the smooth and sharp lineart with the vivid colors are like something from lovingly illustrated books. They do their own version of ITTW and their Wukong is so perfectly shaped and I love him, grumpy face and all. (They also do the most fucking adorable baby monkeys like holy shit.)
Hope you liked this, this was a good way to show you all new content as well as gush because as a little sideblog I can't do much else. Have a nice day!
