there’s a woman on tiktok whose videos i run across occasionally who talks about her experience being wrenched out of the “crunchy mom” bubble and trying to have a more balanced and healthy approach to interacting with the world since; a big part of what seemed to make the whole alternative health and wellness space attractive to her in the first place seemed to be this deep-seated craving for purity, both physical and ideological, for not only ways of living which offered moral reassurance, but for systems of knowledge that offered that as well. and the thing that actually jolted her out of her complacency was hanging out with her other crunchy mom friends and one day one of them just casually rattles of some insanely nasty transphobic bullshit that makes her hair stand on end, like she was expected to agree as a matter of course, and she realized, oh shit, these people are actually insane. and i’m one of them.

i think we forget--which is surprising, in an era where the slightest bit of validation of people with only somewhat repellent beliefs by people with absolutely vile beliefs sends once moderate or even progressive public figures running into the arms of right-wing lunatics--that our social context, and the beliefs we choose to cultivate and focus on, can really deeply shape or re-shape our worldview. given that fact, we should care if the things we believe are true or not! that makes truth-seeking all the more urgent. it also makes me deeply suspicious and not a little hostile to systems of knowledge which elide the difficult complexities of human experience in favor of predetermined categorizations, or don’t support critical examinations of our own flaws, or seems to encourage surrendering our agency in the world in favor of impersonal explanations about an immutable nature shaped by distant cosmic forces.

Today I started to watch a video on a Youtube Danmei channel and before it started, YT ran a trailer/ad for an anti-trans "docudrama" made by Epoch tv (which is Epoch Times, which is the anti-lgbtq+, anti-vax, qanon conspiracy-pushing cult Falun Gong).

Of course the trailer started out seeming like it might be trans-sympathetic, but the longer it went on it became clear that it would be about youth being traumatized by being allowed to transition and that corporations and doctors are pushing a "trans agenda" and lying to parents.

I am so angry. This was a couple of hours ago and I still haven't calmed down. It's especially enraging that they would run this ad on queer content, while YT regularly de-monetizes queer creators with the excuse that advertisers might not be comfortable sponsoring queer content.

I reported the ad as a violation of YT policies (discrimination) and commented that they should not accept hate speech advertising from a cult. Idk if reporting will do anything but I don't know what else to do. If you see it, please report it too.

Referencing purity culture when you have no idea what it actually means? People like anon don't realize that they fell into a popular trap: they're taught specific trigger phrases so they have a strong, violent response to them, equating the people connected to those trigger phrases with IRL evil acts. They support right-wing, Conservative ideals because they're packaged to target people like anon. Years ago, it was "Do this or the terrorists win." Right now, it's accusing all opponents of being a pedophile. Kneejerk response: they're evil and are obviously pro-pedophilia. Yes. If you use the word "proshipper," you're a card-carrying member of purity culture, complete with the defensive response to all possible trigger phrases.

This is how Trump and his minions won over so many people. This is how the Russian bots won over so many people on tumblr and Facebook and Twitter. They learn the language or sometimes create the language -- in this case, proship -- and as such are able to manipulate people from diverse backgrounds to agree to attack the same exact people and enforce the same exact right-wing, fascist bullshit. "If these people do this, they obviously promote pedophilia and probably are parties to evil acts. Feel open to attack them. You are fighting evil." This people do not research or use the time to use critical thinking: after all, if they question it or even consider defending these evil people, are they evil, too?

These are the same people who end up convinced that some other minority group is evil -- like trans people - and are confident that their group is safe because their group is Good. We went from "don't like, don't read" to anons bitching about "proshipping." Don't worry: soon, your group will be evil, too.

We've entered the latest age of cults. Experts warned us about it a decade or so ago, that the economic and cultural instability was very similar to what led to the rise of cults several decades ago. Think the Age of Charles Manson. Same thing, except now we aren't seeing cults in the form of communes in the woods. We're seeing them in online communities, in the form of Trumpers, QAnons, antivaxxers, TERFs, crunchy moms, etc. We're seeing a rise in the group mindthink which suppresses critical thought and individual opinions. "We are Good. They are Bad. If you question it, you're Bad, too."

To that anon who thinks they may have to leave social media - blocking is a godsend! I can only speak for Tumblr because it’s my only social account, but my god it works. Yes, it can take some time to figure out all the possible words and phrases to block (and accounts) but I did it and it works. I’ve only seen 1 anti post in the past few months and that’s just because I didn’t expect someone to be anti Sophia. I just expected anti Sylvie. But now those are both added to the list and I’m fee and clear of the trash.

I have to say that I see next to no anti bullshit on tumblr. I have a lot of people blocked, I am careful with my follows, and I stay away from certain tags.

I see way more of it on Twitter, mainly because I see people that I follow respond to stuff, and because the algorithm will occasionally wash something onto my feed. It's a real freakshow. Trying to discuss anything with them is a lost cause, like true QAnons that have lost all sense of reality and have just their fixed set of talking points and buzzwords that they throw around. These mainly consist of calling everybody a terf/homophobe/queerphobe/fluidphobe, until these terms have lost all meaning. Literal toddlers rolling around on the supermarket floor having tantrums because they're not getting a piece of candy.

All artwork shared must be linked directly to the artist. This includes dollmakers (if they are still up) and any legally and ethically sourced AI generators. Respect artists who had their artwork stolen and fed into AI learning algorithm by not using and sharing the artwork generated. Unless you can prove the AI art was ethically sourced (and no one can then disprove your sources) the safest option is to not link any AI art.

Political, Historical, & Religious sensitivity

Do not use real-world political or historical figures, or religions and their related figures in memes, gifs or disparaging jokes. Real world equivalence of fiction, i.e.: Muggleborns are POC, Death Eaters are Nazis, House Elves are Slaves, are not allowed as they are not a one to one. Muggleborns are not a race, Death Eaters wish they had been as successful as Nazis, and House Elves are based on the folklore fae known as the Brownies.

Be responsible for your own experience on this server. If a conversation makes you uncomfortable, mute the channel and disengage from it. Likewise respect other members boundaries. If they have disengaged from a conversation, do not badger or mention them to get them to answer you. No one owes you an explanation for why something makes them uncomfortable or why they are portraying a certain topic a certain way.
