#anti lydia branwell
Note
Magnus could have kept the secret of creating the portal to himself but he didn't!! Every warlock uses that and it was the best thing for when circle members were hunting them down. It's so useful it was made specifically for protecting the downworlders I love Magnus so much
Also how do u think henry branwell would have assisted in that? Because sh keep giving credit to him, Lydia kept boasting about it but idk it doesn't feel like he did anything zwwswsqs like why would he care
Lydia : my grandfather and Magnus were besties!! They made the portal TOGETHER
Also Lydia: u got manhandled by a warlock?? 😷😷
Meanwhile that said warlock is his "grandfather's bestie"
exactly!!!! not to mention magnus could have kept the spell to himself so people would have to come to him if they needed a portal and he'd get a lot of money from that, but no, he shared it with everyone immediately and it's the spell warlocks use the most and he never even mentions it!!! it was l*dia who brought up that magnus invented it, and some ppl didnt even KNOW!! like okay i know that said ""people"" are shadowhunters but still
the point is that magnus obviously shares everything he creates and the joy for him is in the inventing and maybe even in the sharing itself. he wants to create useful things and help other people, and also to just share his findings from his passion. it's who he is and i love him for it!!! open source king
as for henry, tbh ive always wondered that too???? like What The Fuck did a shadowhunter have to do with this. what could he possibly have to offer?? was he like interested in magic? maybe some kind of scholar? but since when are shadowhunters educated lol. honestly it just makes no sense and it's probably sh's/cc's dire need to have everything be about the shadowhunters at all times ever but the only theories i can come up with as to how he helped that seem plausible are:
he just asked magnus to do it. like "hey warlock what if u created instant travel thatd help shadowhunters itd be rad" and that counts as a co-creation in the shadowhunters' book (wouldnt surprise me, its how racism works). the branwells are an Old Shadowhunter Family, so makes sense that henry would be HOTI and he was just commissioning Magnus
maybe they were drunk one day and spitballing ideas and that conversation helps magnus figure out the key he needed - not because henry Solved It but because talking out loud made he realize what he'd been missing. this would imply magnus and henry were actually friends. i dont remember if magnus ever talked about him, i seem to have a vague memory of that but it might be fake. if he didnt, weird that henry and magnus were apparently besties and yet magnus never brought it up even when he knew alec was marrying into his family and he interacted with Lydia a few times lol
that is in fact all ive got
either way like. im sure it was at least 99% magnus and no one but shadowhunters even credits henry at all, possibly even no one but the branwells lmao. gotta have a family myth or whatever and good ole' henry probably just gloated about it to lydia as a kid before he died of old age at the ripe age of 45. and she just took it to face value as ppl do with these types of family stories
and dont even get me started on "manhandled by a warlock", that shit still makes my blood boil lol
✨mandatory warning to anyone reading this that this post is about the show and i dont care what the books say. this changes nothing because it's not the same canon✨

Why do you dislike Lyzzy though? Not that I like it or Lydia, but why?
Well, I dislike Lydia a whole lot, I don’t see the chemistry, Lydia was quite mean to Izzy, and wanted to torture someone Izzy cared about, and I guess I don’t see Izzy forgiving it.
I also don’t see Lydia as wlw. Nothing in any of her screen time as ever led me to believe she was even slightly interested in women.

so i see a lot of critical stuff about lydia and i was wondering why? it seems like her and alec had a p good understanding of each other. i figured id ask you because you're mlm and might have insight. thanks!
Oohhh boy anon you and I are about to go on a Journey.
So the main thing you have to understand about Alec and Lydia is the power imbalance. Lydia’s introduction into the show is in a role of power; she’s a Clave envoy who was sent to take the Institute away from the Lightwoods. So right off the bat she is Alec’s superior.
Aside from their ranking in the views of the Clave, Alec is a gay man. At this point, he is a closeted gay man. He is so afraid of being outed that he threw himself at a literal demon, from actual literal Hell, when it was suggested that the person he loves the most is a man. I could write you a massive dissertation on Alec’s internalized homophobia, and in fact I plan to, but not today. The point is that someone who is so afraid of being outed and so devoted to his family is not in a position to make a healthy and safe choice regarding marriage to a woman.
Alec wasn’t given a choice, there was no decision. There was a terrible ultimatum, and he was making a sacrifice.
Let’s now look at Lydia’s motives: she wants an Institute. Lydia wants to run the New York Institute, and marrying Alec is the way to do it. Marrying Alec, a suicidal closeted gay man, was a power move. She knows he’s gay. “You mean [Alec’s] feelings for Magnus? I’m not blind.” were her words to Clary. She’s so damn smug about it. If you know a man is gay, and that he has feelings for a man, and that he does not want to marry you, you should not marry him. Full stop.
An argument that is presented in favor of Lydia a lot is how she lets him go at the wedding. She lets him go. This suggests that he was asking permission. No.
Tumblr media
Is this the face of a man who looks like he’s asking permission? Does this look like a man who hasn’t made a decision already? This is the expression of someone who’s life has basically just been saved. He’s not thinking about Lydia.
For comparison, let’s look at Lydia, as she lets him go.
Tumblr media
Right.
To recap: Lydia takes advantage of Alec in multiple ways, does not courteously allow him to kiss a man at their wedding, and doesn’t deserve all the praise she gets for being Such A Good Ally. Good writing, not a good character. Thank you and goodnight.

... Are people really saying Lydia is a fucking angel and they glad they made her pissed off at Alec?  What the actual fuck?  SHE WAS GOING TO MARRY A GAY MAN, KNOWING HE WAS GAY AND THAT THE MARRIAGE WOULD KILL HIM JUST TO GET WHAT SHE WANTED.  AND SHE TREATED ALEC LIKE HE WAS A FUCKING CHILD IN 2X01 AND Y’ALL CALLED HER QUEEN FOR TREATING SOMEONE Y’ALL SAY YOU LOVE LIKE HE WAS A CHILD.

Lydia kicked Raj's ass verbally and physicaly - she did that
If you think it’s appropriate for your boss to be rude and demeaning, then sure she kicked his ass. (I can’t check 100% right now but I’m pretty sure this is at least very close to what she said).
”today just keeps getting better,” when she gave him no orders so he said he’d stay. Imagine a boss saying that? Wow, boss of the year award for people skills.
”if you’re trying to make up for your incompetence,” again, what incompetence? To lose against Magnus Bane? Does she think she could fight him and win? Once more, what kind of boss would actually say that to someone? A pretty awful one...
They were both victims of shitty writing in those scenes, but if you like her for those lines, you do you.

okay i havnt been able to stop thinking about this ep of shadowhunters coz i dnt feel comfortable with a lot of it.
1. correct me if im wrong but it seemed like alec was fine with lydia torturing meliorn in season 1 so i wonder how he would react - if he would be appropriately horrified - if he finds out what aldertree did to raphael. or if he might think its justified. and what that would mean for his relationship with magnus bc magnus deserves better than to have a boyfriend who thinks its ok for his son to be tortured for the greater good.
2. every time clary makes contact with dot, she plays the little sister card and then seems to promptly forget about her. odd considering how eager she was to rescue jace and they’ve only known each other such a short time. and jocelyn has barely mentioned her, let alone insisted that they try to help her. dot deserves better and im not here for an asian woc to be constantly tortured, brain washed, and then discarded by the white leads after she’s served her purpose.
3. again, correct me if im wrong but out of all the actual nephilim on the show izzy, raj, victor, maryse, and robert are the only poc and only one of them is portrayed as a good decent character. raj is by turns an asshole, a laughing stock, and expendable. the rest are just awful. gj guys.
4. i really fucking hope they havnt fridged jocelyn.

I see so many people saying that lydia was/is a qUeEn and a hEro for being okay when alec kissed magnus at 'their wedding' but like...She knew that alec had feeling for magnus before the wedding and still was going to go ahead and marry him which meant that alec well them both would've been unhappy🤷🏽‍♀
I just don't like lydia tbf, she kinda rubbed me the wrong way but that might be just me😕
diaiduahs ok so i debated with myself whether or not to answer this question for like 0.3 seconds before i realized that wait a minute, i have never shut the fuck up about what i think ever in my life. who am i kidding. but anyway fair warning that my opinion on lydia is pretty unpopular among "both sides" of that debate (i don't think there are ever just two sides to any issue but anyway)
also warning that i'm not dissing you or your ask in particular, just giving my opinion based on what i've seen and heard on this debate in the fandom
here's the thing. i don't think she did wrong by accepting alec's marriage proposal. i wouldn't say she did right either, in my opinion her choice was pretty morally neutral
because it would have been different if alec had no choice on the matter and she chose it knowing it would make him miserable. but that's not what happened at all
alec did have a choice. in fact, the fact that he proposed to lydia was something that made his parents (who are the main responsibles for his closeting) fucking pissed. he wasn't doing it to please them; he was doing it as part of his own plan
and again, don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that this wasn't extremely traumatic and awful to him. he wouldn't have even considered it if it weren't for the awful conditions of his closeting and abuse, and he would have been miserable for the rest of his life. but alec had agency. he wasn't helpless. he was making a decision based on the shit conditions that he was in, trying to ensure his own safety and success. the conditions were horrible, but every decision we make is based on the environment we are in. and acting as if lydia was somehow forcing him into this marriage is acting as if alec didn't have autonomy to make his own choices, which i think is pretty unfair to him
one more time! i'm not saying it isn't fucked up that he had to make that decision. i know that ppl a lot of times say "lol it was their choice" regarding ppl staying in the closet to wave off the trauma of closeting and debates about queerphobia in general. the closet wouldn't even be a choice that's presented if queerphobia didn't exist. no one's choises exist in a vacuum, we are all dealing with the material conditions of our lives, and queerphobia is a huge part of that; one that makes the best choices for us impossible. so like, no, he wasn't BY ANY MEANS 100% free to choose what he wanted. but he DID have agency in his decision to propose to her
besides, what was she supposed to say? "no ur gay lol"? it's not like outing him would have been an amazing move. and of course she could have said no and not said that it's because alec is gay and would never be happy with a woman, but honestly, what the fuck kind of right does she have to make that choice for him? she doesn't even know him. she has no right to tell him what he should do with the plate of shit that homophobia and abuse has handed to him, especially when he obviously is trying to keep his agency and have control over his situation and choosing to marry lydia was a part of that. again, maryse was pissed. when alec chose to marry lydia, he was doing it for himself
what would have happened if she had said no? he would have ended up marrying another girl. and probably one that his parents picked, not him. like, let's please give alec credit here. he chose to stay in the closet, but he was fighting being just a pawn in his parents' game from the start. and it's not like either of them had any illusions about what this marriage was; it was a business arrangement at best. alec called it a partnership. they both just wanted to use that situation to their favor. and in shadowhunter culture, that's normal (i'm not saying that's a good thing, just that it's a fact that influences her decision to say yes as well). like, do you think maryse and robert loved each other? we haven't really seen any other shadowhunter marriages so i can't say for others, but it sounds to me like marriages of convenience were pretty standard. if i were alec, id probably be relieved that she had said yes, because then they'd both be in a situation where they knew exactly what they were getting into and he didn't want to pretend
and don't get me wrong, i'm not saying she did alec a favor or some shit. i'm just saying i can't really see how she is doing him harm in that situation, and that i think this take is taking away a lot of alec's agency and if i were him i'd be pretty pissed about that lol
but tHEN we have the Lydia Stans who ALSO take his agency just as much with this absolute nonsense take that she was a "hero" because she "let" him call off the marriage. excuse me lol? he wasn't hers for her to "let" him do anything. what could she even DO to "not let" him kiss magnus? at best, she could have thrown a tantrum. which would have been pretty ugly, but like. pointless. she can't make him stay and if she had tried to this would make her a fucking asshole and a villain. but the fact that she wasn't a villain doesn't make her a hero lmao
she did the bare minimum! sure, she was gracious about it, it was nice that she said that he deserved to be happy, but still the bare minimum. it was alec's choice, not hers. she doesn't have any right to force him into this marriage, and she didn't have the means to, either, which is part of why i think her choice to accept his proposal was morally neutral
and god it's annoying as hell that ppl act as if she was doing some kind of favor by not being incredibly violent and homophobic and trying to force him into a marriage with her lol? like not being homophobic should be the least we expect. and again, alec can make his own choices. he didn't need her permission to do jack shit
so when it comes to the whole alec situation, i'm pretty neutral towards lydia. it's whatever. she was barely there for that plotline anyway. when it comes to the doyalist perspective of it all, i am pissed as hell that she seems to be so popular within the fandom as if she did something incredible or whatever, but my feelings towards her as a person/character would have been pretty neutral
but tHEN we have the fact that "both sides" of this debate openly and completely ignore all the other fucked up shit she did, like trying to arrest izzy for saving a downworlder's life (idc if she changed her mind, it was still gross) or her openly racist comments. her comment about raj should "cut back on the smartass after being manhandled by a warlock" was one of the racist comments that stuck with me the most in tHE WHOLE ENTIRE SHOW, because like. what??? warlocks are literally immortal powerful beings with access to magic shadowhunters can't DREAM of. and the "warlock" she's talking about is MAGNUS BANE, not only one of the most powerful of them, but someone that she supposedly admires??? like, my god, she was all but fangirling about him coming to the institute and then it's like. wow raj how could you lose to someone so inferior
like are you kidding me???? tell me how this comment makes ANY sense whatsoever unless you are the most shadowhunter supremacist person to have ever lived. there is no reason at all to presume that losing to a warlock is humiliating (especially considering how them powerful they are) unless you believe that shadowhunters should be inherently better than them at everything
but we never talk about that, now do we
so...... the super lydia-positive corner of the fandom annoys me to no end but overall this whole discussion just tires me from "both sides". i don't like her, and i hate that she is so loved when the shit she did is ignored and most of the stanning comes from a pretty belittling vision of alec anyway, but i also think the anti-lydia side focuses entirely on the wrong issues regarding her character

You just can't stand for women to be powerful and strong characters can you?
You just can’t stand to use reading comprehension can you?
Alright so yes Lydia is powerful, yes Lydia is strong. But Lydia is also homophobic and racist and shady af. Power/strength/good writing does not equal good person.

I'm half asleep as I write this so don't judge
Shadowhunters may have shitty writing and less than quality acting, but one thing they got right is CHARACTER REDEMPTION.
Take Maryse. The 'bad parent', the homophobic mom, the rule follower who lives for the Clave. Then show her realizing her faults, mending bridges with her son, telling her daughter to chase her dreams 'like your brother' and doing her best to make things right with Luke. What do you get? An amazing character arc and the fandom being on HER SIDE when Robert (the cheating bastard) is unfaithful.
Or take Lydia, practically the same situation. Then reveal her lost love, burying herself in her work to numb the pain. See how she only got engaged to Alec because they both agreed that it was for political, not romantic, reasons. Then her supporting Alec and telling him 'you deserve to be happy'. Honestly, I stan this woman so much.
Even Sebastian kind of. Yes, he's a horrible person who does horrible things that are inexcusable. But we know WHY he does them. It's because Valentine has manipulated him all his life. It's because the only thing he knows is power vs weakness. Because when he finds he has a sister, he clings desperately to the idea that SOMEONE COULD LOVE HIM. He has no idea how to love though. He is so powerful, yet so vulnerable. No, he's not good or maybe even forgiveable, but he's UNDERSTANDABLE. Sebastian isn't just a stereotypeical villan with plans for world domination. He's just trying to find happiness the only way he can.
(Thank you for reading my midnight rant)
