Ok, but i feel we need to talk about something Season 3 of H2O did that a lot of shows don't even acknowledge and that its that you can be attracted to another person while you're in a relationship and that doesn't mean you love the person you're in a relationship with any less, and yes, i am talking about the clear attraction Cleo felt towards Ryan and viceversa, as creepy as it was, i'm glad Cleo didn't get demonized, neither by the show or by herself, for feeling attracted to him, she's a human being after all and can't control who she feels attracted to, but she can control her actions and put some lines if she feels like things are being taken too far in order to prevent doing something she might regret later.
Also, Keep in mind this was in 2010, and i don't know about you and the tv you saw, but my tv shows/telenovelas/films etc. usually put attraction to other persons as a prelude to cheating and nothing else, or in the contrary, if the person didn't cheat they carried some sort of guilt for feeling attracted to the person, like, i can't pinpoint exact examples but it puts emphasis on the idealization of love and that when you meet someone you're not allowed to have even the remote thought of seeing someone else in mind because if you do you don't love them enough and therefore you're a bad person.
Honestly as a whole i feel like Season 3 of H2O put a lot of emphasis of being more realistic when it comes to love and with the execution being generally well, on Cleo's side at the very least, because of course, Zikki was a mess, don't get me wrong, but even then, Rikki was allowed to breakup with Zane and the show made it very clear that it wasn't something bad to do, especially when Zane crossed a line by kissing Sophie.
Honestly i would've loved it if they took it a step further and Bella and Will ended up breaking up realizing they have nothing in common and that they just like the idea of being with each other but at the moment of hanging around together they aren't able to have deep and meaningful conversations because they barely knew each other before being a couple. AND that Rikki and Zane didn't end in such an open-ended way, if you're gonna break them up at least commit to it and have them wave each other goodbye at the end instead of flirting around with each other, because that's still falling into the idealization of love and thinking that in life you will have only one partner. Not saying it can't happen, but it's pretty weird all girls all have met "the one" and once they get into a relationship, even if there's hiccups they still come back to each other.
Honestly, now that i think about it, Emma was the only one on the show with two love interest, though she never officially went out with Byron, S1 established him as "the one" before S2 introduced Ash, but i guess Byron doesn't count because they never went out(?) and i can see Emma realizing Byron was not meant for her and backing off since she was the more emotionally mature one, i honestly would've love to see this happen now that i think about it, if you could not get the actor back, acknowledge at the very least their relationship in a way that still impacts the plot, not to mention it would've make Emma's initial rejection of Ash make more sense, but i guess they never went out so the show just went "Byron who?".

Ok a guilty pleasure revealed: it’s kind of corny but at the same time the drama can be quality and (for a tv budget fantasy) pretty good quality/special effects but I love makos mermaids. It’s the H2O Netflix reboot but especially season 3 arc is just chefs kiss.It's not that complex but it's one of those shows you can turn your brain off while watching and it's colorful and sensorily pleasing.
 I think most shows revolving around the fae/magicfolk kind of loses a sense of magic or meaning when it just focuses on how cool it would be to have powers but still be an ordinary/everyday guy (tbh did not care much for h2o) instead of the connection to the elements and nature and being apart of something bigger, which this reboot pins down. The makos mermaids crew feels kind of like some hippie mermaid cult that’s like bay watch babes by day but sea witches bewitched by the moon to stew in a bubbling jacuzzi lagoon by night. This show makes me want to go feral, drink mushroom tea and swim in the ocean naked on a full moon then binge eat a shrimp cocktail platter crouched in the sand like a washed up seaweed cryptid for the opportunity to get a sense of the moon spell they go under once a month. And the 3rd season arc?? Toxic masculinity being the antagonist?? Juxtaposed with a good wholesome balanced man?? Toxic gender roles paralleling greater philosophical questions such as preserving the harmony and safety of the community vs individual pursuits of power?? Or even love bringing a sense of security and support that makes people uninterested in pursuing power vs people that have no love/support at all interested in the pursuit of power/control in order for a sense of security or even self worth/importance they never had since they never felt cared for or supported by a community?? All this in a teen drama show?? Ahmazing.
I'm just rambling at this point but fuck vampires and werewolves there’s something so stimulating on a sensory level with mermaids from the setting, the outfits, the food, the hair accessories, the jewelry, the magic; I just want a rip tide to drag me to its watery depths already. The only thing this show is missing is more chadmermaids (chadmaids?? Merchads??) being evil and fighting. I can see why the mermaid counsel cancelled them I mean toxic masculinity sucks but I would love if this show had a 3rd reboot where they could go into this concept with more depth esp as western society’s idea on gender is expanding and I mean the mermaid counsel is already kind of portrayed as being archaic for being anti man but I feel like more can be explored there.
Anyway it’s great for getting your Siren Summer on. It makes me want to start a tribal sea cult. I feel like if I was an Aussie witch by the coast it would probably shamelessly influence my craft’s aesthetics.

My Favorite Movies & TV Shows About Girl Best Friends
My last post was a little on the negative side. I mostly want to keep my page positive and lighthearted. So, I’m changing it up with this list. I’m taking a break away from Marvel and Disney for now.
There are a lot of great shows and movies about friendship or that feature best friends. I haven’t seen them all. Here’s a list of tv shows and movies that focus on female friendship that I’ve seen and loved. I’ve listed them in order of least to most favorite, but I honestly love them all.
10. Alexa and Katie

Alexa and Katie’s friendship is pretty awesome. Alexa has cancer and Katie is always by her side supporting her through all the ups and downs. She shaved her head without hesitation just to show Alexa she wasn’t alone. It’s great that Alexa isn’t defined by her illness. Alexa is a schemer and full of life. And Katie isn’t boring either. She’s quirky and silly and has her own life too.
9. H2O: Just Add Water

Every summer, my friends, sisters, and I would swim around the swimming pool pretending to be mermaids. This show was that come to life. It’s about three friends who are accidentally transformed into mermaids. On land they are your typical teenage girls, but just add water and they are mermaids. Not only that, they also have powers to manipulate water and elements of the weather. They must keep it all a secret while navigating their way through high school. Of course, there are lots of boys and lots of fun.
8. A League of Their Own

This movie is a classic. I first saw it when I was about 6 and I loved it! It showed girls tearing it up playing a boy’s sport, but we also saw how they were still women. Not women trying to be men. Women with husbands at war, women with children, women who just wanted to go out dancing with their girlfriends. We saw a great sister relationship between Dotty and Kit, and we saw all these awesome women work together, support each other, and ultimately accomplish a piece of history.
7. Now and Then

This was essentially a girl version of Stand By Me. It wasn’t nearly as poignant, but that didn’t stop me from loving it. My sisters and I all wanted to be like Roberta (Christina Ricci), but maybe I’m more like Sam (Gaby Hoffmann). We see the girls deal with boys, body changes, divorce, parental neglect, and death. One thing I liked that Stand By Me didn’t have was the chance to see the women the girls grew up to be (and which movie stars portrayed them). We see even though they’ve gone their own ways, they’re still there for each other.
6. Dollface

Dollface is not a perfect show. At times I found myself really disagreeing with some of the characters’ advice and thought it came across a bit shallow. Or maybe I really am just like Jules (Kat Dennings). But I love the creativity, the quirkiness, the humor. I love that it’s about learning how to be a girl friend when maybe you’re more of a lone wolf. I love that it has two Asian-American lead characters who aren’t related (Brenda Song and Shay Mitchell). And it sure ended its first season with a bang. I’m ready for season 2 if it ever comes around.
5. Ready or Not

This show was a true gem. Ready or Not was a 90’s Canadian show about two best friends, Amanda and Busy, who are completely opposite of each other, and all the trials and lessons they face as they grow up. It wasn’t afraid to touch on some serious subjects. It covered things like peer pressure, divorce, slut shaming, homosexuality, sexual predators, anti-semitism, and more. A lot of the issues are still relevant today. Both characters are fully developed rather than just stereotypes. They have their own strengths, flaws, and set of family problems. Although their pairing seems unlikely, their enduring friendship is really heartwarming.
4. Parks and Recreation

This isn’t really a show about girl friendship, but it has one of the best pair of girl friends in TV ever — Leslie Knope and Ann Perkins. It also gave us Galentine’s Day, a fictional holiday that girlfriends now celebrate in real life. I had to include it.
3. The Baby-Sitters Club

The Baby-Sitters Club was so huge in the 80’s and 90’s. There were books, a tv show, a movie, dolls and more dolls. Thanks to Netflix, there’s a whole new updated version for new generations to fall in love with. It’s a perfect blend of nostalgia and relevance. This newer version has altered the races of a few characters, so now there’s a girl of just about every personality type and race that you can identify with.
2. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants consisted of two feature films and four (now five?) books. It follows each girl on their own story and then interweaves them as we see them come together to support each other. It has some of my favorite binge watching material: best friends, romance, and traveling the world.

I found myself binge watching this series on Netflix during the pandemic, and I loved it. The first couple of episodes started out slow, but I quickly became invested in the three southern gals and their families. It’s a nice, comfy show that takes place in a nice, comfy little town. These women are grown with their own families, careers, and adult problems. We see them deal with divorce (this time as a divorcee), childlessness, business endeavors, and health scares. We also see how it all affects their children as well. It’s a great show if you’re past your teen years and want some adult friendships (that aren’t about being naughty).

-she wouldn’t be a carbon copy of season 1 cleo. (who was bubbly, naïve, etc.) she’s been keeping the secret of being a mermaid since she was nine, so she would be much more brooding and secretive. and she’d be damn good at keeping the secret. but still, give her flaws! she doesn’t have many in canon, making her a bit of a mary sue. maybe being a mermaid for so long has given her a sort of complex that she has to unlearn. maybe she can’t reconcile her humanity with being a mermaid, and maybe she struggles to tell people anything about her life because she’s afraid of being discovered (to the point where it’s unhealthy). music however, could be her main outlet for expression, where she gets to voice her true feelings
-her parents would make an appearance on the show. (why do we know almost nothing about them in canon? every other mermaid, including charlotte, has at least one on-screen parent.) as hotel managers, they might be too wrapped up in their work to adequately pay attention to their daughter, explaining how she has kept the mermaid secret from them. maybe bella and her parents could have a story arc where her parents learn to take more of an interest in bella’s life, while acknowledging how their constant moving around has affected her. on the flip side, bella would learn to open up to them more, and stand up to them when they discount her feelings
-bella would learn the importance of female friendship and community with the other mermaids, without a guy being involved. because she’s never met another mermaid before coming to the gold coast, and has been constantly uprooted by her parents’ jobs her whole life, she’s probably never had best friends before. she also needs to figure out who she is, outside of being a mermaid! if she has to have a love interest, her arc isn’t too focused on him. and he doesn’t only value her because she has a tail
-as for bella’s power, it could still be gelidkinesis/water to jelly/glass. but let’s see it be put to use more often! if she’s been honing this skill for half her life, she should be the most powerful. let’s see her literally walk on water (she does this in 3x02 but to a limited extent). let’s see her make more cool glass shapes out of water, like she does with rikki’s mermaid figurine. let’s see her explode things. fandom intellectuals like @hoziersgf also suggest that bella’s power should be connected to an element—earth. i wholeheartedly endorse the idea of earthbender!bella, because it makes sense within the context of rikki, cleo, and emma’s elemental powers.
-instead of connecting bella to eva, who has nothing to do with seasons 1 and 2, give her a 1950s counterpart like the other girls. i don’t even think it would be that much of a retcon. louise (or even julia) could have easily met a mermaid with gelidkinesis powers in the 1950s.
-finally, instead of becoming best friends with rikki and cleo right away, maybe there could be some resistance on both sides. (this would be consistent with how they treated charlotte in season 2.) perhaps bella would stick to her loner thing, and rikki and cleo would be hesitant to allow an outsider into their group. but then, some external threat would make all three of them realize that they’re stronger together.

Plus, they had almost no chemistry and connection and almost never just enjoyed each other's company. They're one of the worst aspects of the show for me!
Wow, that’s interesting! I don’t think I’ve ever come across anyone that hates Piper and Leo and I’m really intrigued. Honestly, I do see where you’re coming from, but I don’t hate them. I enjoyed them in the early seasons and I do think that Charmed wouldn’t be Charmed without Piper and Leo. 
I’m gonna put the rest under the cut since it’ll probably get lengthy and be anti Piper/Leo in parts. 
I agree that Leo’s character was flat and it’s actually one of my main critiques of the show. I mean, Leo was on the show practically from start to finish and the writers never took the time to fully flesh him out and develop him. In my eyes, there’s just no excuse for that because they had plenty of time to develop him further and it wouldn’t have stolen screen time from the sisters or any of the other characters or main plots. But Leo never had his own identity, it was always tied to Piper. He was the Charmed Ones whitelighter, Piper’s husband, Wyatt and Chris’ father, an Elder, an Avatar but he was never just Leo. Even when he was mortal, he never seemed to develop anything beyond being Piper’s husband. There were times where they attempted to take Leo’s character further with episodes such as Saving Private Leo or the Gideon storyline in season 6 and Avatar storyline in season 7, but they never seemed to go far enough and/or reverted Leo back to being stagnant and bland. 
And what you said about Piper… it’s something I’ve never admitted because I know how much people love Piper but I agree with most of what you said. As a child, Piper was my favourite sister for a long time, but as I grew up I started to view her very differently. I won’t go too in-depth with this, because I have another ask to respond to about Piper where I’ll discuss it more. 
I always say at the most basic level for me to love a ship, I have to love both characters individually first and I think that’s the issue with Piper and Leo - a lot of the time I dislike them or I’m indifferent to them, and that makes it tricky to really love their relationship. 
Unlike you, I do think that Piper and Leo had a connection. I strongly believe that they were true love and the love of each other’s lives and in the early seasons they had fun and lots of sweet, romantic moments, which is when I liked them most. 
Like I said before, my main reason for disliking them is because I really, really didn’t like the direction their relationship took in the later seasons. It’s a typical thing that all writers do where they create a conflict for a couple because they think it makes the couple more interesting and creates entertainment, but in the case of Piper and Leo it shouldn’t have happened (Stefan and Caroline from TVD are another classic example of this). They already had conflict in the early seasons with the whole forbidden love thing - in season 2 they were involved in a love triangle with Dan and P3 H2O perfectly showcased their dilemma and in season 3 they suffered the consequences of the Elders finding out they were planning to get married - but they overcame that and in seasons 4 and 5 their relationship progressed beautifully. Forcing Leo to become an Elder was so random and blatantly just thrown in to cause unnecessary conflict when in reality Piper and Leo should’ve just been left alone. 
Also, from my perspective, things were never right when they got back together. I think that when Leo left to become an Elder, Piper wasn’t just devastated and heartbroken, she was furious because she felt like Leo had betrayed her. After everything they went through to be together and how much she devoted to him she couldn’t believe he was just going to leave her and more importantly their infant son. And I genuinely think that Piper never truly got past that betrayal. It’s the whole idea of forgive and forget - Piper forgave Leo because she understood that he was bound to an extent by his duty and because she loved him so much, but she never forgot. I mean, in reality, she could’ve taken Leo back early in season 6 because he was around all the time and made it clear he still loved her, but she told him she needed more space to move on and that’s what she did. She dated, she moved forward with her life without him and then somehow they were thrown back together and by season 7, Leo had lost his shit and she became obsessed with trying to fix him to the point that it felt like Leo was her third child rather than her husband. And their development jumped all over the place in the last seasons. In season 8 they seemed to try to do a complete 180 and have them as this loving and happy couple again, when from my perspective, they’d never even addressed or resolved their issues from season 6. 
And that’s a big issue I have with Piper and Leo - the problematic and unhealthy elements of their relationship are never addressed. They’re actually portrayed as being this domesticated, happy, loving and perfect long-term relationship when in reality there was such a high level of co-dependency between them (something that Billie actually questioned Piper on in season 8, which I have to respect her for) and there were many times when one or both of them hurt others and put themselves and/or others at risk because they loved each other  - something that Phoebe was constantly hammered for when it came to her relationships. 
So yeah, I think that kinda sums up my thoughts on the Piper/Leo relationship. It had a lot of great elements and I did enjoy watching it (particularly in my younger years), but I disagree with the way the writers portrayed/wrote them at times and also the way fans seem to view them as being perfect and or an ideal relationship.
