Unpopular Phase 4 & 5 Opinions

Quantumania is the worst Phase 4/5 movie. And it wasn’t even because “kang got beat by ants.” (I liked kang in this movie). It’s just that the Spy Kids aesthetic & bad acting & overall weird vibes just weren’t for me.

Love and Thunder is no worse than Ragnarok. I would argue that it’s better in a lot of ways, actually. I really liked it.

Taika Waititi ruined thor with bad humour all the way back in Ragnarok tbh, but y’all weren’t complaining about it then 😒.

BuckySarah is better than sambucky every day of the week.

The Marvels was a good ass movie & they’re one of my favorite teams in the mcu. I’ll never forgive cbm sites & online dudebros for killing the hype from the moment the film was announced.

I adore America Chavez & Kamala Kahn and I want to see them in everything. They must be protected at all costs.

Multiverse of Madness had shitty characterisation & basically just copy-pasted the ‘grief made me go off the deep end & hurt people, then I realised and stopped myself’ storyline from Wandavision… but Wanda was extremely selfish & apathetic to other people’s suffering from the time she was introduced in the mcu. MoM didn’t make her like that.

Wanda should’ve been looking for Vision (her actual real life boyfriend whom she spent years with irl) in MoM instead of the kids that weren’t even real that she spent like a week using as characters in her sitcom.

Making everyone forget Peter Parker wasn’t profound or poetic in any way- it was just frustrating and needlessly cruel.

I’m begging marvel to understand that heroes don’t have to be in constant suffering to be heroic & villains don’t have to sacrifice themselves to achieve redemption. Let characters heal and atone, you absolute weirdos.

What If…? is the most boring show ever. I’d rather watch Secret Invasion or She-Hulk.

Season 2 of Loki is, in a cinematic & artistic sense, the best marvel project period.

Loki season 1 was meh- more of a fun au than anything because his characterisation kinda sucked. Season 2 fixed it, though, and made it way easier for me to incorporate this version of Loki back into the larger mcu.

Having Steve stay in the past with Peggy was stupid af.

I don’t hate Peggy (or Captain Carter), though. I actually think she’s pretty cool.

I don’t really love Steve. He’s arrogant & they never really let him have flaws & something about him being a perfect metaphor for the American military industrial complex (and marvel painting that as a good thing) doesn’t sit right with me.

The Illuminati got done dirty and the only reason they went down so fast was because Wanda had all that plot armor.

I thought the retcon of having Wanda be “destined” to become the Scarlet Witch since birth was an annoying cop-out. Her powers originating from being experimented on with an infinity stone was way more interesting.

Loki & Wanda have almost the exact same powers.

Nebula deserved a bigger rule in killing Thanos & everything else moving forward.

I love Kathryn Newton but her acting as Cassie Lang was the worst acting I’ve ever seen in the mcu, like it was outrageously bad.

I’m glad Sam is the new Captain America and not Bucky.

The fact that Bucky probably isn’t gonna be one of Thee lead characters in the upcoming avengers movies feels sick and twisted.

Secret Invasion was actually passable until the G’iah scene at the end. That ruined it. And Nick Fury deserved way better for his solo series.

Kang is so much more interesting than Doctor Doom. I really hope they just recast him.

Carol Danvers does NOT deserve the hate she gets.

I actually disliked Carol until The Marvels. That movie made me a stan.

The way people treat Monica as Wanda’s little inferior pet creation or smth & then brag about it is uhh very sus.

I don’t like sylvie (bc she’s an amalgamation of 3 different comic characters- which killed any hopes of them appearing individually in the mcu, the creators used her existence to butcher Loki’s genderfluid rep, & she was written poorly) & I HATE sylki (bc it’s weird & unnecessary).

Marvel isn’t dead. I actually love where they’re taking things. But that’s just me.

I am just going to straight up say it...

Warning, long rant ahead.

The whining about “people” shipping Bucky and Yelena instead of Bucky and Sarah started the minute one, a single soul, literally ONE person posted that they would like to see Bucky and Yelena together (Not even romantically, but as friends). 

ONE. 

“Too many people shipping it” my ass. It is like everyone was salty already, waiting for the first ever person to ship it in order to complain about it. I know, I was there when the first few posts were tagged with the ship.

I don´t know about other sites, but at least on tumblr? No one who ships Bucky and Yelena has said anything outrageous against Bucky and Sarah, but we still get called racist, acephobic and what-not in the comments for shipping something different just because Yelena is asexual in the comics. As if that matters in the MCU, as if the movieverse even pretended to respect the comics, as if canon sexual orientation had ever mattered when it comes to people´s shipping preferences, as if people were somehow forbidden or banned from having her as their asexual icon or writing her as aromantic and asexual in fanfictions just because a few other fans do, in fact, ship her. 

There are more than 200 works on ao3 filtered as Bucky x Sarah.

Bucky and Yelena? They have 17. I swear, by the way some Sarah x Bucky shippers talk about Bucky and Yelena you would think their shippers have become a plague, or that we are everywhere, when in fact: Bucklena is not even a thing in fandom and will never canon, as opposed to Bucky x Sarah, which pretty much is. Bucky x Yelena is a literal crackship, it is not a threat to either Sarah x Bucky shippers or Yelena´s canon sexual orientation in the comics.

“They haven´t even met, how can those stupid people ship them? They obviously just picked the first white woman to come to the MCU!!!” I have read, or: “You shouldn´t ship it because whites have everything!!”

“There are very few aro/ace characters, you literal MONSTER!!!” Says the one who gives the Yelena/reader whateverthehell kink smut fics a free pass.

 “Let us have this!” A few others cry.

 Have what? The shippers you are talking about can´t hand you over anything because the characters are not theirs any more than they are yours. You do, indeed, “have” them already. Enjoy. 

Most fans don´t work at Marvel, so it is not their job to ship (Or even avoid shipping) whatever you personally enjoy or makes you feel comfortable. It is not even their job to have diverse ships and/or characters. That should, in theory, be Disney´s job. 

 Also, stop pretending the only reason a small minority of the fandom ships Bucky x Yelena is because of her race. I am sure that might sadly be the case for some people, but it is clear as day most Bucky x Yelena shippers are just salty they never got Buckynat, which I think is a good enough reason to ship Bucky and Yelena, as good as any other. I read someone say this is “disrespectful” to Nat, or that we are trying to replace her, which is dumb, so freaking dumb. I mean, don´t lie, how many people started shipping Sambucky, or Winter13, or SamxSharon only after Steve left?

 Is that “diisrrespectfuulll :´(” to poor baby Steve as well? Or is the whole being “disrespectful” thing just an excuse?

Like, you don´t need to make up excuses or rant about how “problematic” that ridiculously small non-canon pairing you dislike is. "I like x character single", “I don´t like this ship” or "I prefer this other one" are literally the only reasons you need not to ship something.

I never shipped Buckynat though. Some others simply fell in love with Yelena´s character as soon as we finished watching Black Widow and immediately thought of Bucky cause we like him as well or think it would be hilarious to watch them work together considering their different personalities (Some people pair their favorite characters by default regardless of their canon sexualities or lack of screentime together, SHOCKING!!), and it doesn´t take a genius to figure out Bucky and Yelena have similar backstories (Brainwashed into being assasins, abused, lost people who were incredibly important to them in endagme, blah, blah, yada, yada). 

Is this “having stuff in common” reason for shipping superficial and basic? Sure, like 99% of crackships. Sue me, guilty as charged. 

Not enough for you to ship it or even “get” it? Hey, that is totally valid! 

Do I believe the people who say they don´t understand how anyone could ship it unless they are racist or hate asexual people? Hell no! The moment two characters share similar backstories in ANY fandom, a few people are inevitably going to notice, and some are going to start shipping regardless of whether the characters have ever met or are going to meet.

Admit it, it is not “puzzling”, it is not new or strange that people are shipping it. This fandom is not lacking in crackships. Loki and Bucky have been shipped. Steve and Loki have been shipped. Nat and Sharon, who don´t share screentime, have been shipped. Caphill and Falconhill: shipped with little to no screentime. Sam was shipped with Riley after only one mention. Peter and Shuri have been shipped without sharing any screentime, just like Bucky and Yelena, precisely because of stuff they have in common, and as I said, the haters began hating Bucky x Yelena almost the moment the pairing was born: I am pretty sure it is because they saw the similarities between the characters before or at the same time the shippers did and it made them feel threatened, so forgive me if I don´t believe the people who say it is the most random pairing ever.

Don´t get me wrong, Bucky and Sarah are definitely a thing. They were flirting, they had cute moments together, it is super obvious Bucky was trying to impress her, etc. I agree that the people who say they have no chemistry or that Bucky was remembering Steve´s mother or trying to make Sam jealous by flirting with his sister are all full of shit. He became 40s! Bucky whenever he was around Sarah, it is obvious he has a huge crush on her and viceversa.

I respect Bucky and Sarah as the canon ship, or most likely to become canon. I hope Marvel makes Yelena's asexuality explicit as well in the MCU, that they don´t pair her up with anyone, but fandom shipping and fanfiction are quite another thing. This is a hobbie, no one in the fandom owes anyone anything, no one has to ship or avoid shipping anything.

The "You hate black women" argument when it comes to Bucky x Sarah is ridiculous. I hate every ship with Steve and Bucky that is not Stucky. I hate SamBucky. I hate SarahBucky. I hate BuckyNat. I hate St*ggy. I fucking HATE SteveTony. Don't fucking @ me, my brain is soaked in SteveBucky and it is canon for me. Disney and Marvel are just homophobic & SteveBucky would have been married by the end of Endgame if one of them was a woman.

I don't mind when people have a ship they prefer over a different one. If Stucky is your OTP, fine. What I do mind is when you start dismissing other ships, e.g. Sambucky, or SarahBucky because you don't want to see Bucky being shipped with others. It is 100% fine if you ship Stucky and only that, but it is not okay to dismiss others by saying "oh, Sam and Bucky have a great sibling dynamic" or "Bucky only flirts with Sarah to piss Sam off" and even then, it's not to make Sam jealous, it's "Bucky is just teasing Sam to get on his nerves." Personally, the worst take has been "Bucky is extra nice to Sarah because she has Steve's mom's name." What fucking reaches.

When Sebastian posted the IG story of an article about how there is so much more footage of Bucky flirting with Sarah with #ReleaseTheBuckySarahCut, I saw someone say the actual words "Don't worry, Seb ships Stucky. He's probably only calling for it to be released bc there's probably more funny Sam/Mackie content he wants people to see."

Y'all do realize this is just that basic person-gets-jealous-bc-they're-insecure trope, right? This is a feeble and, may I say, pathetic effort to exclude others from romantic narratives. In this case, that effort often comes from a place of racial discrimination and misogynoir. Cut it out. Ship your ships and leave the others alone.

Hey fellow white stucky and/or sambucky fans...

... it looks increasingly like whenever Cap 4 or tfaws season 2 finally happen, we may be getting canon sarahbucky. Here are some reasons why this is actually fricking awesome and why I think we should be really, ideally vocally supportive of this even if we’re not shipping it in fandom terms:-

- in terms of diverse representation, this would be every bit as powerful and important as Bucky being part of a queer relationship. Sarah is a (beautiful) working-class, dark-skinned Black single mother played by an actor in her early 40s. People like her do not in general get anything like sufficient representation, let alone in sweet romances with established, well-loved characters. Having her coupled with a white man with the level of popularity of Bucky would be A Big Fricking Deal. We don’t get cheated of Bucky being involved in some awesome representation happening in the MCU here, we just get a different kind. I for one am here for this. :-)

- Sarah Wilson is one of the loveliest, sweetest, most brilliant characters in the MCU, and Adepero Oduye plays her beautifully. She’s a fricking *delight*, and she deserves so much happiness! As of course does Bucky. And I think they could make each other happy. :-) He’d be an awesome person to be in AJ and Cass’s lives. He seems so at home in Delacroix! He could help with her business when not off superheroing. He could help AJ and Cass with their history homework. Imagine his humour and his protectiveness and his long-honed carer skills going into step-parenting. :-)

- and Bucky dating (and maybe even one day marrying) Sam’s sister would be ABSOLUTELY SUPERB and have so much potential for both sweetness and comedy in Sam’s relationship with Bucky. :-) It wouldn’t bring them together romantically, but it would bring them even closer together. Imagine Sam’s speech at the wedding! Omg. <3

- getting together with Sarah would not make Bucky any less bi! <3 I mean, that’s kind of how being bi works. ;-) And Marvel can deny it as much as they like, but Sebastian plays Bucky as bi (whether deliberately/consciously or otherwise) and I don’t imagine that’s going to stop. :-) It also wouldn’t rule out future acknowledgement of Bucky’ biness if that does finally happen. All of us who’ve been in relationships with people who share at least one attractee gender in common know how fun it can be to thirst over pretty people with your partner. I’m imagining Sarah and Bucky dude-watching together and then giggling and kissing and it is an incredibly happy thought. :-)

- the MCU is generally terrible at writing canon romantic relationships (with a couple of honourable exceptions, eg T’Challa x Nakia who are wonderful). Whereas in just the few seconds of Bucky x Sarah interractions we’ve had so far, they are already fricking *adorable* together. The cute smiles! The mixture of confidence and shyness! So good. <3

- this is so so important: Bucky and Sarah being together would mean a huge amount to a lot of Black fans, especially Black women fans. <3 Like, honestly I would be a supporter of sarahbucky becoming canon even if this was the only thing about the ship that I like! <3 (And it is not. :-) )

- CW abuse/racism mention: if it does become canon, Adepero Oduye is likely to get some horrible shit on social media from racist fans, including racists who will use a mask of being apparently pro-lgbtqia+/supporting stucky as a cover for their actions. I haven’t checked her social media stuff (I need to find and follow her!) but I’d be unsurprised if this is already happening. :-( There may also be some extra shit from some the same people against the already much-hassled Sebastian Stan for it. We need to make absolutely damn sure that we’re not making things easier for the people who are going to hate sarahbucky for the grossest of reasons.

Fundamentally this: we were never going to get canon stucky or canon sambucky. It’s annoying, and it’s kind of pathetic that Disney/Marvel are so averse to lgbt+ rep in general. But there it is, and it sure as anything isn’t Sebastian’s or Adepero’s fault that it is so (nor indeed, I suspect, Malcolm Spellman’s). And it’s incredibly unlikely that any of the nonsense that was Endgame is going to get undone now. Canon’s stuck with it, alas. :-/ But what that also means is this: fully canon sarahbucky would take absolutely nothing from stucky fans at least that we still had to lose. Instead, it would give us new possibilities and storylines for Bucky to grow, to be loved, and to be his awesome and protective and loving and loyal self.

So, yeah. None of us are obliged to ship sarahbucky! In fandom terms, I don’t, really. Still loyal to and adoring stucky, primarily, and I love sambucky (and the stevebuckysam OT3) as well.

But within canon I would be so so delighted if sarahbucky happens, and I love Sebastian even more than I already did for so blatantly shipping it. :-) And we can support and uphold this ship if it becomes canon without actually shipping it ourselves, and make sure that we call our racists within our own ship communities. And as far as we can, we should.

And, well. Bucky’s my favourite character and I want him to be happy. So. :-)

Then she finally gets her powers in the show where she’s a prop for another white woman W*nda (who's been whitewashed btw) but now her origin story for her powers are due to that same whitewashed woman? like the mcu is trash for how it treats black women. at least in the dc shows we have a Black woman as Batwoman and right now with the way that Black women have been vilified on Loki I just... ugh I'm so needing to see Black women as more than villains and props for white characters (Wanda, Loki, Bucky).
