gimme those good good multiples of Four
heyyy kellll, let's get into it dattebayo
4. This is not so much me blocking someone annoying bc I typically block ppl for like. actual bigotry or political opinions that piss me off. This is about when someone blocked me. This is about when the orokabu anti who used to read and kudos my orokabu fic blocked me. I still think about the mf. deeply odd human being.
8. The deeply incorrect fandom opinion is ppl taking shits on kakagai bc they think gai is ugly. It's such a shitty take, and whenever I see it, I'm like????? Keep that negativity to yourself. Just say you don't fucking like it.
12. KABUTO. literally. the homophobic homosexual henchman is actually very interesting. He saw this genderfuck old weathered dyke and decided to devote his life to them. His permanent identity crisis and cringefail loser personalities have bewitched me body and soul. On a serious note, his storyline is such a brutal criticism of how Konoha abuses and disregards the safety of children, particularly its war orphans, and how readily the shinobi system simply lets the unfortunate fall by the wayside.
16. I will never understand naruhina or sasusaku. Or people who truly, genuinely believe minato was a good hokage.
20. the fucking sasodei arc at the beginning of shippuden was paced so horrendously badly, I despised sass and deidei by the end of it out of sheer spite lolol. It was only when I read the manga that I developed an appreciation for them.
24. I have to say orochimaru. I am deeply aware that they are a transphobic caricature. I know why kishi made the narrative choices that he did. That being fucking said. I cannot stand the way queer folks in this fandom will dogpile other queer people who enjoy orochimaru. Even today, the people who make nart really fun for me are my beloved roachy maru mutuals. if u don't like them or think that you're allowed to be queerphobic to ppl who do like them for shits and giggles, block and move on tbh
the choose violence game

I was looking at the top Naruto ships on AO3, and wondered how popular they were over time, so I made a graph so I could see!
AO3 filtered for english language fics only
tracked top 10 character pairings for every year from 2009 onwards (the year ao3 was founded), using the "sort by date updated function", with from: blank, to: "____-11-14", because AO3 was founded 2009-11-14 but there are some backdated works. The datapoint for 2022 was recorded as of 10/25/2022 11:50PM PST
manually entered data into spreadsheet, imported into Flourish for visualization
Anyway, part of the reason I made this was because I was wondering when the hell MadaTobi got so popular-- as best as I can tell, Blackkat kicked off the tag in 2015, and by 2018 it jumped into top 10 ships and has only grown from there.
Some interesting observations about general trends as a fairly recent Naruto fandom member:
Kakashi/Iruka has pretty much always been the most popular Kakashi ship (this makes sense, considering Iruka appears as an emotionally crucial character in Ch 1, the very beginning, and Kakashi is the most popular Naruto character)
Kakashi/Naruto was surprisingly popular, staying steadily in top ten ships from 2011-2021, only dropping off top ten in 2022
Kakashi/Sakura was always popular too (staying in top ten every single year), but began to drop down the list starting ~2020
I wonder if this has to do with the increasing distaste for age-gap/student-sensei relationships in the past 5 years? re: general anti/pro fandom discourse in the wake of Voltron and similar
Kakashi/Obito and Kakashi/Gai were fairly unpopular until ~2019-- KakaObi first hit the top 10 in 2019, while KakaGai hit top 10 once in 2016, but didn't comeback until 2020 and since then both have stayed in top ten through the present
It's worth noting that since Naruto is an old fandom (older than AO3) and so many fics reside on FFN, this is only a reflection of a subsection of fandom. On the other hand, if you're on Tumblr, you are pretty darn likely to be within the AO3>FFN category. Just food for thought.

Hello fellow humans!
Since my blog is quite a chaotic place (when seen at the timescale spanning months, my hyperfixation changes become clear), I have decided to put a pinned post about my interests and what you can expect here so you do not face disappointment later on [no guarantees about the lack of disappointment still]:
List of fandoms you might come across here:
Naruto, One Piece*, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Bleach*, Skip and Loafer, HxH, Harry Potter, Spy x Family*, Avatar the Last Airbender, Fruits Basket and the next thing I hyperfixate on.
*not caught up yet, still watching/reading so no spoilers please
I do ship a lot, and the ships tend to be polarizing ones so you might wanna stay out if you don't wanna see reblogged fanart posts of Dramione, Spuffy, Sasusaku, Zutara and such (Suikarin, Akigure, kakaobi lmao). [Thinking that this is making me sound like people that I don't like so like I also ship queer ships of similar flavours like fuffy, sasunaru, zukka, tyzula, inosaku and also idk neutral ones like kyoru, kakagai, gaalee, sukka, korrasami, linny, twillow, etc etc i ship a lot]
And please DNI if you are anti any of the main characters in these shows (anti-Rileys are welcome although i wouldnt even call Riley a main character); why are you even watching if you hate Sakura or Katara or Hermione or Ron or Aang so much?
Terfs, homophobes, biphobes, racists, misogynists and the likes can fuck off as well.

2, 6, 14, 22, 23? 💖
2. Are there any popular fandom OTPs you only BroTP?
NejiLee / NejiTen (idk are these popular??) . I love team gai, theyre the best. I don’t see any romance. (don’t care if you do, it’s cute, but personally just loving the friendship)
6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?
I never /hated/ kakagai but fandom (and age) has made me love them very very much
14. Unpopular opinion about your fandom?
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of a post made by avengeruchiha which reads: "bestie, in the naruto fandom being anti child soldiers, anti marginalisation, and anti institutional oppression is somehow an ✨ unpopular opinion ✨" End ID]
ok but specifically about the tumblr sns fandom which is moreorless logical, i've seen hypocricy sometimes where op posts 'kill fujoshis' then reblogs from 'fujoshi artists' and reads 'fujoshi doujins' etc etc - and nevermind the fact that half of E-rated fanfic reads like a fujoshi doujin as well but for some reason they're not classified as such bc "fanfic authors are english/'westerners' and not in a japanese manga format :)" - liek thats how it sounds. like i get the sentiment they are trying to say is 'stop women that hypersexualize/fetishize mlm relationships' but it doesnt come across that way esp when i see them engaging in media/hcs etc. that does exactly that. it just sounds like ur trying to get woke Points by using a japanese term u dont really understand
ok now was that unpopular enough for you ? :P lmk if you disagree and your thoughts
22. Popular character you hate?
If we are talking about the wider Naruto fandom, Jiraiya
I do not enjoy the pervy geezer trope in any shounen and Naruto is no exception. I only cried at his death bc Naruto was crying (that bench and popsicle scene... ;-;)
23. Unpopular character you love?
Tenten . precisely because she is arguably the most useless character with the least amount of screentime, she is a blank slate that kishi hasn’t ruined
Shes one of the first females introduced that wasn’t shown obsessing over a guys attention and that gave her +10 points in my book as a kid (I know. Low bar. That’s how deprived I was as a kid). Yea shes not even There in the series but shes cool shes chill I like her lol
Send me Salty Asks !

TMI Tuesday... Is there something you would like to see more in the KakaSaku community, or fandom as a whole, Naruto or otherwise?
Ooooh good one. A couple things based on nostalgia:
1) I miss those sprawling, epic fanfics that people used to write. More 500k+ word mission fics please! I should probably shut up and just write one myself...
2) Competition! Events are fun, but we used to have really cool competitions that people got very in to. It was good fun, but a lot of work.
3) I miss civility. Maybe because we used to be a bit more siloed in our Livejournal circles or NFF fanclub, but I didn’t have to confront antis mischaracterizing an age gap ship as pedophilia every week like I do here on Tumblr. Anti culture as a whole was a lot less in your face. We should go back to that: ship and let ship. (I’m looking at you kakagai shippers....)
Changes I love:
1) FANART! There’s so much more fanart these days and I love, love, love it. Thank you artists!
2) Respect for artists. The discourse and work that’s done around art theft prevention these days is inspiring.
3) Ao3- Bless this wonderful site! One day The Pit will burn down and I will dance in the ashes.
How about you guys?

you’re literally my favorite naruto blog i love your stuff so much!! you write and understand team gai better than kishimoto!
Tumblr media
THAT IS SUCH A HIGH COMPLIMENT?? Thank you so much for that anon!
I’d hesitate to say I understand any character better than the original author, but I certainly put more focus on those characters more than Kishimoto--hence the Team Gai blog. In one way, I understand that Team 7 was always the flagship on the series, but I certainly disagree with Kishimoto when it comes to their decided endings.
As an author, I know that it can be overwhelming to manage multiple characters and to neatly tie up hundreds of plot points, but for characters that “broke out“ like Lee and Gai, I wonder sometimes if Kishimoto stifled his own creativity with those characters to keep Naruto in the focus. It would certainly explain why the ending didn’t seem to fit the original premise for many of his characters.
If I could give anyone general advice for writing any character that isn’t your original work, it would be the following:
If you are intending to keep their characterization as close to canon as possible (which is what I do to preserve the authenticity of the character that everyone already loves) I would like to stress the importance of looking for character qualities through a non-biased lens.
What I mean is this: In fandom, we often like to create caricatures in our head of what characters are like based on a few of their major qualities. Hence, this is why Team Gai is always SO out of character when I see them written in the fandom. If we’re being honest, here’s a comparison chart of how Team Gai is portrayed versus how they actually are; Be warned that I was extremely blunt with these.
“Fandom” Team Gai vs. Reality:
Fandom!Might Gai: Springtime of Youth! TALKING IN ALL CAPS! KAKASHI, RIVAL! Portraying this man with sex appeal, ever? Either you mean it as a joke at his expense or you’re REALLY into KakaGai.
Real!Might Gai: Goofy, but with Sagelike Wisdom. Youth is a theme of his teachings and a catchphrase, but he acts like an adult most of the time. EXTREMELY Emotionally literate--Gai is not oblivious! He can read people really well! Will know if you’re hiding something, even if he can’t remember your face. Can lose his temper if his loved ones are threatened or if his direct teachings are disobeyed. Gai gets tired too--Lee can wear him out! Goofy old sensei who combines humor and wisdom with some of his eccentricities.
Fandom! Rock Lee: Springtime of YOUTH, 2.0! Very Stiff Ways of Speaking! Lovesick! ‘Creepy’ if he’s not the love interest of the work. Cinnamon roll who would never get mad, ever. Feels like Gai 2.0. Woah when he takes off his weights he’s really cool!
Real!Rock Lee: A SERIOUS CHARACTER. Lee can be goofy with his friends as much as anyone, but Lee’s usual expression is serious! He’s self-motivated to an unreal degree. Diligent, tidy, and disciplined. Hopeless Romantic. Very gullible! Extremely idealistic, to the point of possibly deluding himself. Minor codependent behavior exhibited towards role models. Hot-Blooded. Adores cute things. Secretly envious of those around him. Lower self-confidence. Seeks approval.
Fandom!Tenten: Loves weapons, but does she have a personality besides that? Let me just fill one in. Portrayed often as either uptight and like a bully, or as a slightly more tomboyish Sakura. “The Tomboy” archetype. Tenten wants romance just like every other girl, what do you mean? Lovesick/heartbroken over Neji, stays single for the tragic romance. She was Neji’s training partner! She can’t stand Gai or Lee and looks down on them. Often has weak characterization because she gets sidelined into being a love interest. (...and then her entire character revolves around her (male) love interest.)
Real!Tenten: Loves weapons of all kinds, especially Kunai. Impulsively buys weapons she likes. Doesn’t understand many of the girlish inclinations like love and delicacy, but is not anti-feminine. Has canonically stated that she has never been interested in love or relationships. Has never had a crush on anyone. [Also, she was not Neji’s exclusive training partner, she was simply his training partner for the third round of the Chunin exams. ALL of Team Gai regularly trained together or in different pairs at any point in time. This was a comment that was taken way out of context by shippers and has spread false information ever since. This fact is no more real than Lee "balding."] Is tactless, but definitely not a bully. She loves to investigate and play pranks, especially when older. Balances work and rest. Is the “glue” of her team. Cares about her self-image. Has deep insecurities about how others perceive her, and constantly compares herself to her team.
Fandom!Neji: “Destiny Boy.” Either a brooding, calloused douchebag or a brooding, “bad boy” douchebag. Goes out of his way to say mean things OR doesn’t utter a single word for the entire story. His and Shino’s personalities are indistinguishable. No emotion. Stiff. Not empathetic in the slightest. Unhealthy portrayal of his personal relationships, even his friendships. Who would want to be around this guy? I’ll just make him the ‘strong and silent’ type with anger issues and snarky one-liners and call it a day.
Real!Neji: Disciplined and traditional. Reserved, not emotionless. Has a WIDE range of emotional expression and communicates primarily on the nonverbal level. Speaks in either metaphors or to the point--it depends. Some modicum of patience for foolish behavior. Master of projecting his problems. Is only a ‘bully’ pre-exams, but was already on the comedown by the time we’re introduced to him and his team. Deeply emotional at the core, but can be overwhelmed in his by own emotions, especially when it comes to his ego. Learns to maturely manage himself later on. Very perceptive of his surroundings. Cares very deeply for Hinata, his team, and his close friends. Hinata is his closest female relationship whether you like it or not. Witty and sometimes blunt, he doesn’t go out of his way to be a jerk once he’s older. Fits into the respected "big brother" role for both Hinata and his friends.
The Conclusion
When reading through characters and their actions, I cannot stress enough that you often have to let go of your preconceptions of a character and actually look at what they are thinking and doing and how. Your idea of a character's canon personality should be measured up against their canon. Do not measure a character’s canon against your caricature.
Again, fandom will always do what it wants and take creative liberties where it chooses--as is their right as an audience--but discussing canon and ‘accuracy’ of a portrayal is another thing entirely.
My assertions about Team Gai focus on their canon portrayal of their personalities and the goals they had within the story of Naruto. My headcanons are always kept separate, and my assertions about their character arcs and endings have to do with how to approach--through the literature--their internal/external conflicts and to reach an appropriate resolution that makes sense within the story.
Thanks as always for contributing to the blog!

Genma. Raido. Ibiki. Anko. Guy. Aoba. Kurenai. Tonbo. Ebisu. Kakashi.
Ten ninja who find that peaceful times require new paths. A swan song for a generation.
Also, Kakashi's retirement party. Be there or be demoted to chunin.
Words: 15132, Chapters: 1/1, Language: English
Fandoms: Naruto, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Categories: Gen, M/M
Characters: Shiranui Genma, Namiashi Raidou, Morino Ibiki, Mitarashi Anko, Maito Gai | Might Guy, Hatake Kakashi, Yamashiro Aoba, Yuuhi Kurenai, Tobitake Tonbo, Ebisu (Naruto), there are other character cameos but I don't think they're major enough to note, and I don't want to disappoint anyone, when they're not in it much, Naruto Ensemble, flak jacket crew, as I call them
Relationships: Hatake Kakashi/Maito Gai | Might Guy, Namiashi Raidou/Shiranui Genma
Additional Tags: Post-Chapter 699 (Naruto), KakaGai Week 2020, KakaGai isn't as major as I intended it to be, I just sort of wanted to write a swan song, for the characters Kishimoto forgot, Retirement, Existential Crisis, but like in a chill way, I don't like what Kishimoto did with Orochimaru and it shows, minor mentions of like, pedophilia existing in the world, quietly simping for the third, anti Orochimaru vibes, it's almost teen rated except for some like vaguely sexual language, No Sexual Content

awayandlaughing, tagged by @quantumghosts to list 10 Naruto ships - can she rise to the challenge? IDK man. IDK.
1. ShikaNeji - being entirely honest with you I started shipping this because it amused me and then I got invested??? It also happens to have strong correlations to types of relationships I tend to create among my OCs (aka the Angry One and the Sarcastic Nerd)
2. KakaGai - queer adult 30+ men in a healthy relationship built over years sign me the fuck up
3. GenRai - Fallen Leaves Made Me Do It (also, see #2, arguably with even more health)
4. InoSaku - because f/f rivalry as a cover for homoromantic urges is a way better narrative than literally everything written about these two in canon
5. InoKiba - opposites attract, naturally but also Kiba is like the anti-Sauce and that’s frankly hilarious.
6. SakuChou (Chouji, not that dude from Kiri) - literally because I made a joke about it once and then some dick told me I wasn’t allowed to ship it and fuck you buddy
7. AsuKurenai - not the actual canon version but a version where it’s a source of mutual character growth and Kurenai doesn’t get relegated to “baby mama of the dead guy” (in a perf world Asuma doesn’t become “the dead guy” but lbr his was a narratively poignant death)
8. ShikaYoshi - oh man guys. oh man
9. MitoTobirama - but like, the sort with pining and lingering hand touches and a lot of self denial but also in a “enemies to lovers” way where Mito and Tobirama clash all the time over what they think is best for Hashirama (they agree the answer prob isn’t Spots Uchacha)
10. RinShizune - much like #1, because it amuses me (and bc Rin being a lesbian makes everything about Obito and Kakashi’s gross semi-paternalistic idolizing crushes better bc fuck that)
I’m not tagging anyone bc I am a fandom hermit and every Nardo person I know has been tagged already
