Last year, I had a radical idea that would change the way I think about chemistry forever.
What if molecules were a little bit fluffier?
Tumblr media
It all started with me looking at the structural formulas in my schoolbooks. I was amused by how every element seemed to fill a different "role" in a molecule - carbon formed the skeleton, oxygen and nitrogen brought flavor, and hydrogen was there to fill all the bonds that weren't "used". They were almost like a bunch of tails attached to a central body.
But I felt that one thing was missing - and that was them being alive.
Tumblr media
To describe how my system works, I have to outline the principles I follow.
The specific arrangement of the atoms is generally based on the molecule's 3D structure, though I sometimes make small changes from reality to make it resemble a character with human or animal traits.
Tumblr media
One thing I'd like to ensure is the diversity of the molecules' appearances - I don't want their identities to be lost in B&W print or sketches. I also prefer avoiding symbols (chemical or alchemical), because I think they're overused and might also interfere with their facial expressions.
Tumblr media
The faces and limbs serve exclusively to give them more character and expressive power - they don't define a molecule's composition or structure, though they may serve to help communicate a compound's "personality".
The reason behind the alternative representations of a molecule is to put emphasis on different aspects of it - e.g. if you want to look at water symmetrically as an oxygen with two hydrogens, it is better to use the representation on the left, but if you want to view it as a product of acid-base reactions, it is better to use the representation on the right.
Tumblr media
I wanted a more visible way represent ionic bonding - most models simply show the ions disconnected from each other, and I thought making them more obvious would be a good idea. At first, I tried drawing it as an electron (held by the anion) that produces a rope which the cation is tied to, and then I noticed that it looks like a dog on a leash, which I thought was funny enough to draw like that.
Tumblr media
I'm not sure if I will be able to fill out the entire periodic table - I don't think it's really even necessary. Most elements rarely occur in organic chemistry, which is what this system primarily focuses on. In any case, this project continues to evolve as new ideas flow into my head. Feel free to ask me any questions about it!

Thinking about Knives, and People.
This is Hematite:
Tumblr media
It’s soft, only about 5-6 mohs. Iron and Oxygen love each other, and bond firmly, but the overall crystalline lattice doesn’t pack that tight.
We crack open the earth and pull these rocks, along with other ores of iron, out of where they have laid for millennia.
We pulverize them.
We subject them to unimaginable heat
Tumblr media
We subject the iron to temperatures so extreme that it is blown apart from its beloved oxygen, unable to hold on.
Then, the shaping begins.
We do incredible violence to the iron; the hammer, the grinder; annealing and galvanizing; we take the twisted remains of the hematite and shape them into something hard, something sharp, something useful.
—-
I think about people with a bit of an edge to them.
I think about people who are hard.
I wonder what they were torn from. I wonder what temperatures they were subject to. I wonder what violence was done to them, to grind away the pieces that weren’t useful.
—-
Some days, I awaken, and I understand The Knife.
I remember what was done to me; to make me sharper, stronger, harder. What was ground away.
So I could be more useful.
Other days, I forget. Those days are easier.
—-
I am told to be grateful, for this world my ancestors built for us. For the material prosperity available, for the advanced technology; For a world with so many fine, high quality knives.
The question I have learned not to ask; the question that gets me branded as a madman, devoid of sense, is this:
Did anyone ask the iron?

Hi! I've seen you express concerns a few times about anthropomorphizing animals. Do you have similar concerns about media that features anthropomorphic animals as animals or insects, like Charlotte's Web, An American Tail, Bambi, etc.?
Interesting question. I generally have enough faith in adults to know that real-life animals aren't comparable to what they see in children's cartoons, so I wouldn't say that's a major concern of mine.
When I say I'm concerned about anthropomorphizing animals, what I mean is that I'm concerned when people ascribe human characteristics to real-life animals. This doesn't really mean creating anthro animal designs in media or art, it's more of a concern with mindset and ways of approaching animals. For example, people may insist on giving their reptile "comfy" furniture or decor that looks nice, prioritizing that over something species-appropriate. My concern comes in when people ascribe human needs, wants, and emotions to reptiles at the cost of the reptile's well-being.
Does that make sense?

Every once in a while some professional parade-pisser comes along like, "oh you like dolphins/chimps/otters/orcas/seals/<insert wild animal species here> do you?? But did you know that they're murderous dicks that kill, maim and torture other animals horribly just for shits and giggles??"
Dude, the internet is built on cat pictures, being a sadistic serial killing asshole is not the PR blow for the animal kingdom you think it is

STOP ANTHROPOMORPHISING SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS!!!
I hate when people explain science with "The atom wants this" or "The pitch wants that" They don't want anything!!!!! They can't!!!! There's no brain inside them!!! If you can't explain a concept without anthropomorphising it, you don't really understand it.

one thing i kinda hate about most attempts to anthropomorphize chemistry (mainly in visual media) is that a lot of them only focus on the individual elements, with little to no exploration of how would they interact. while they can definitely be interesting on their own, it disappoints me to see no one trying to combine them into molecules, which (at least in my opinion) are infinitely more diverse, engaging, and useful to know about:
as of August 2023, there's only 118 known elements, and a lot of the later ones aren't even stable enough to have their properties studied. the number of known compounds lies in at least hundreds of thousands, and expands a lot more rapidly
because of that, knowing the elements alone is knowing only a tiny fraction of how our world works. hydrogen may be in stars and carbon may form diamonds, but if you never let them touch, the entire garden of organic chemistry (which hosts almost everything you eat, wear, and every single living thing on this planet) is locked from you!
due to the much larger realm of possibilities, you don't really feel obligated to cover "everything". you think an element isn't fun? you can ignore it! instead, try turning one of your favorites into an acid or a base
you ran out of fun elements? that's not an issue either! if you let an acid and a base react together, you get a salt, a lot of which exist in nature in the form of minerals
speaking of chemical reactions, why do so few people try to depict them? i wanna see the little guys actually do something with each other! make them undergo character development!
water. if you think drawing all of the above would be too much, at least try to form water. if you can't put two hydrogens and an oxygen together, i consider your potential unused

As the sisters grow up, Mami stops repeating her mother’s insults and starts seeing Rika for what she really is. But Rika’s self-image is still an ugly/scary “iguana.”
