My journey in the MCU fandom on Tumblr: Sharing my thoughts on the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, racism in the MCU fandom and the best and the worse of the fandom
I wasn’t going to write this much but here I am… I don’t even know where I’m going with this but since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier just recently came out, I wanted to share some thoughts.
I joined Tumble because of a show I loved but most of you don’t know it “ Hit the Floor”
I stayed on Tumblr for two reasons only, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan.
Before the Captain America:Civil War premiere, a friend sent me the link to the Sebastian and Anthony ET interview, and I was hooked. In just one interview. I discovered Anthony Mackie. The guy was hilarious!!! I just couldn’t get enough and I knew I had to know more about him. How could he improvise so many funny lines on the spot? He was just amazing.
I had pretty much watched all the avengers movie but that was it. I was not involved in the fandom. So I knew Sam Wilson’s face, but I couldn’t even remember his name if my life depended on it. That’s how much the MCU treated him as a side character.
I was like how the f*ck don’t I know this guy?
His talent reminded me of Eddie Murphy, Jim Carrey or Robin Williams, like yes they can make some emotional or serious movies, but when they want to make you laugh, you will laugh. Whether you want it or not.  I kept wondering how this guy wasn’t more famous.
And the banter with Sebastian Stan? Wow, you could tell their friendship was strong, the way Sebastian lighted up when Anthony was talking, and keep bouncing off his jokes. It was art. the way Sebastian said “ I love you” at the end of the interview. Pure gold.
I then started to watch some of the interviews and boy was that a mistake!!! I literally couldn’t get enough. So I watched all and I say all their interviews, it was the best. We got some gems:
“Why aren’t you looking at me as much”
“Which way is the beach Seabass”
*Them saying nonsense in Spanish and then Sebastian Saying Papi Chulo*
 ¨And so many more, ....
I watched other solo Anthony interviews and he was still HILARIOUS, but you could also tell he felt a little bit more at ease with Sebastian around. I won’t pretend I know him or his personality, but Sebastian seems like a little bit more of an introvert and looks like he doesn’t enjoy the interview experience unless Anthony id around him. Just my thoughts
I watched the interviews before I went to see the movie, I even cosplayed as the Winter Soldier to the movie premiere and I was IN!!! When I saw Captain America Civil War, I became a SamBucky shipper, these two were hilarious and I really so the potential for a great realtionship I love enemy to lovers stories.
I also shipped Stucky because, to me, the trope of the movie was Superhero gives up everything to protect his long term friend” Hollywood movies have some codes and if Bucky were a female character, there is no doubt in my mind that the movie would have been marketed as romance.
Stucky really was an easy ship! But then the MCU fandom of Tumblr fandom messed up everything for me. You see I really liked the CACW and I I liked Stucky, I liked Sambucky, and I loved the introduction of t’Challa’s character, but one of things that affected me the most in the movie was that it was the first blockbuster I watched with 3 black main characters, Rhodey, Sam and T’Challa. That, and the fact that they were planning to realease a Black Panther movie in two years, I was super excited, and that’s the main reason I got involved in the MCU fandom so much, when before, I was just a casual watcher.
If this seem weird to you, then you have no idea how we were only getting crumbs before. For me it was soo huge, I even told all my friends, and they were laughing at me. But usually blockbusters, especially superhero movies get one black character and that’s it, usually the best friend or something and never the leads. So, for me it really was a big deal. How sad is that by the way…
I became more involved in the fandom and, at first, I wasn’t focusing on anything special, Sambucky, Stucky, Stackie, the Black Panther, and even Zemo, whose character I really liked.
But soon I noticed that the CACW tags were always flooded, and I mean flooded with the same two white characters: Steve and Bucky. I told myself, ok that’s fine Steve is the lead after all, but it would be good to see the other characters too.
And then I noticed another interesting trend: Evanstan…. Wait what?
Chris Evans, and Sebastian Stan… did I miss something? Listen, obviously I’m sure they must be friends or something, but you’re going to tell me you watch all MCU the actors and you’re going to focus on Steve and Sebastian? I’m sorry what?
Sebastian and Anthony are right there… Or Chris and Anthony, they even have a secret handshake, only the 2 of them do… what more do you want?
Tell me one iconic Evanstan moment… go ahead tell me… See??? There isn’t.
Because of this and because of how badly some Stuckies were treating Sam and Anthony. I became less and less of a stucky shipper . I mainly focused on SamBucky, Stackie and the Black Panther,
And then the Sebastian Stan stans saw how popular Stackie, Sambucky, were becoming and I started to see some problematic stuff in our fandom too.
I don’t want to generalize, but when you go into the Stackie tag, and you see cropped pictures of Sebastian without Anthony, it’s easy to assume that a Sebastian fan did that. And we know damn well you cropped out Anthony because we watched all Stackie interviews and know exactly which interview your picture was taken from. We know that Anthony was sitting right next to Seb.
You post a picture of Sebastian laughing but you crop out the person who was making him laugh??
“but it has nothing to do with race” How do you know that?
“Sebastian had more screen time” More screen time than Anthony in CATWS or CACW? I don’t think so.
“I have been a fan of Sebastian for longer”, that’s fine but don’t go out cropping Anthony, just post gifs of Seb in his usual, sad, and Anthony-less interviews, not the ones where he’s smiling because his best friend is next to him.
Some of you really are the worst. And just so you know, your fave Sebastian is Anthony’s biggest fan, if he saw pictures where you cropped out Anthony, he would block you on the spot.
When I realized that Anthony Mackie would be the next Captain America I was screaming, no actually, I was crying, Sam Wilson will be Captain America, and Anthony would finally get the recognition he deserves.
You would think that the MCU fandom would focus on Captain America or at least one the two leads, instead of just Sebastian? Right? Right? WRONG.
Anthony is handsome, he’s funny, he’s a great actor, he went to freaking Julliard, he’s at the top, I don’t see what else the man can do??? He should already be a superstar, but no, you will side-line him even to he is the lead of the show.
Even when they are the actual leads, you guys would do anything to bring up the White characters even if it means ignoring the Black characters.
I remember I was having a conversation about Black Panther with my friends and I asked one of my white friends who was his favorite character in BP was and he told me Martin Freeman (don’t even remember his name in the movie) Martin Freaking Freeman, there are half a dozen of great characters and your fave is the only white man??? Ok, ok, that’s great.
Don’t give out automatic reply like “It has nothing to do with race, if you haven’t thought about it first”, because there’s a high probability that it is indeed about race. Stop saying it isn’t, sit down and ask yourself, “Am I biased?” “Why am I reblogging only stuff related to the white characters”.
One of these days you guys are going to make me hate Sebastian with the sh*t you are pulling.
I looove the Stackie friendship and the Sambucky dynamic but after seeing the way some of you treat Anthony and Sam’s character, it make me want to focus on Sam’s character and forget about the rest.
 I remember they were some posts about how Anthony was problematic, and I just lost it. Apparently, there was an old article that resurfaced were Anthony was making a joke about women making sandwiches or something.
If you were offended by the sandwich joke, that is totally ok, and I can understand that.
But if you were offended by the sandwich joke, and saying Anthony is problematic BUT you still stan Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, ScarJo or even Sebastian Stan, just know that there is a high probability you’re racist.
They have all said or done problematic stuff, and people only seem to remember stuff related to Anthony, which was probably just a joke by the way.
Chris Evans and Jeremy called Black widow a wh*re, ScarJo took roles that she maybe shouldn’t have and I didn’t forget Sebastian shady Instagram post, when Kaepernick was kneeling. There are so many more things to be said about Jeremy Renner but google is your friend.
Anthony also got hate for hating on Tom Holland? Like what? Do you guys even hear yourselves? Don’t you have any friends you like to tease? If you hate someone, do you go around talking about him every chance you get? It was obviously friendly banter but some people wanted to turn it into something it was not. Sigh.
I really cannot with this fandom
 The stackie fandom was small at the beginning and the Sambucky fandom even smaller, but we were there and it was amazing. Sebastian and Anthony received the same amount of love from the fandom and I wish we could go back to those days.
Stop pretending the fandom isn’t racist. Stop saying “it isn’t about race” when you haven’t even thought about.
Saying “it has nothing to do with race” only shows that you haven’t thought about anything but don’t want to be called a racist.
There is racism in this fandom and it will always be there, but if you guys want to do anything about it, you have to acknowledge it first.
You can’t be pulling off stuff like “I don’t see colors”, “ it has nothing to do with race”. Stop, sit down, think about it and then we can have a conversation.
If you’ve made it till the end, I apologize for the typos and grammar mistakes, I wasn’t planning on writing this much.

Why We Need to Show Disney that We Love Sam's Character
Tumblr media
Been in Star Wars fandom when chaos occured, I realized how easy it is for Disney to sideline a POC main character even though the role is already official. Finn's character was sacrificed for another white male because the fans liked the other guy better. This issue is a long story by itself, and @thefirstokiro explained it amazingly here:
I don't want this to happen to Sam Wilson.
Sam is a lovable character, as we all agree. He's also popular because he fulfills most of the rules on "How White Movies Think a POC Protagonist Must Be To Be Loved by Fandoms and They're Kind Of Works" which are:
1. Is a comic relief, or humorous.
2. Flawless.
3. Is a sidekick to a white person.
4. If one of the main, which is rare, the villain must be POC too.
Tumblr media
See?
Now that he got his own TV series, he will be more than funny. Being one of the main character means that we'll know him more personally, and we will see his flaws. He's not a sidekick anymore. This is not bad, instead, it's an amazing idea of an exploration outside the popular stereotype.
However.
Fandom racism exists, where POC characters needs to fulfill at least some of the aforementioned rules to be loved. There might be hate when it's breached. However, people are getting better, so I hope that they will accept the character as they are.
Remember, Disney is not striving for diversity. They are striving for exposure. If they feel like the POC is not lovable enough or not attractive enough to be 'hyped' and 'cheered' by fans, they might remove him from the spotlight. They've done it before and they'll do it again if they need to. With the fandom's preference of Sebastian Stan over Anthony Mackie, I just hope that Anthony gets to keep his spotlight—and always be shoulder-to-shoulder with Seb, not behind him.
So, let's celebrate. Let Sam show his flaws and let him improve himself. Talk about him, show how much you love him as a main character, show that POC shouldn't just be a saintly being or a sidekick to be loved. Let him be weak, strong, sad, happy, human. Disney is a fan-pleaser and hates backlash, so they will listen.
Because Sam Wilson and Anthony Mackie deserve this amazing role.
Another thing to think about: @capsamwilsxn talks about racism that Anthony experienced here:
Tell me what you think!

How do more people not ship Stackie? I don't understand. I tried looking for fanfiction for them and there is //not enough//. They are PERFECT together! As just friends in interviews or something more. They are the best
Honestly, I think either the MCU fandom are so heterosexual and/or so used to the hegemonic heterosexual pairings in mainstream media like movies and tv shows, that by default they see any over-the-top chemistry by two males as a bromance. Iwas guilty of that myself way before I decided to look pass the gender of others to really look at who looks like they make each other happy. Or... they are just racist, whether they acknowledge it in themselves or not, and refuse to see what a bi-racial power couple Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie can be; if Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan choose to be.
Yes, I believe two straight guys can be platonic soulmates and have a bromance. Chris Evans and RDJ and Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth show clear examples of that. I think it’s adorable how Hemsworth wants to adopt all his male friends into the Hemsworth clan. Or how RDJ embraces the Stony community while being happily married with kids.
I find myself scratching my head at the MCU Fandom community as a whole simply because they don’t acknowledge the power of stackie romantically, but they also don’t even acknowledge their friendship either. You have rabid Sebastian Stan fans cooing over Sebastian and not acknowledging the fact that Sebastian smiles, talks, dances, feuds, laughs and is silly more around Anthony Mackie or thoughts of Anthony Mackie then any of his costars. You can’t embrace someone’s everything without also embracing what puts a spring in their step, and Anthony Mackie is it for Sebastian Stan.
Then you got those MCU fandom people who are so obsessed with the idea of EvanStan because the two handsome, white actors portrayals of their favorite ship Stucky, that they can’t see pass their noses that Stackie is just as, if not more so a possible thing. So these people are down for the cause as far as homosexual pairings go; but have their blinders on when it comes to any pairings that interfere with their OTP. Chris Evans has amazing chemistry with all his costars like RDJ, Chris Hemsworth, ScarJo, Anthony Mackie, etc. But Sebastian Stan literally lights up inside and becomes less introverted when he’s around a extrovert like Anthony Mackie.
Anthony Mackie is so sweet and kind to people who interview him and to his costars. He’s always saying positive things and ready to hype them up in whatever projects they are doing whether they are sharing a project or not. He has always taken acting roles that empower the black community. This man deserves better treatment in the MCU community as a whole. He shouldn’t have to insert himself into interview questions meant for other costars at a convention or interview, because fans and interviews refuse to acknowledge the awesomeness that is Mackie. Some might think it is rude, but I see it, as this man took time out of his busy day to be here and he is going to be known because he is somebody. He put in his time, just like the others. He petition to be a part of the Marvel Universe in any way possible and was rewarded for his efforts for being allowed to play the amazing Sam Wilson.
I love me some Anthony Mackie and I love me some Sebastian Stan; and I especially love them when they are together. I swear if any of these handsome men were the same race as the other; or a different gender then the other than more people would be shipping them. But because God made them who they are, and they love who they are, we are always going to have haters; haters who might not hate the friendship, but hate the idea that they could be something more.
I’m sorry, but there have been Romantic Comedies built on best friends who everybody, but the best friends saw they should be together, until they finally realize it themselves. I’m not going to apologizing for shipping the friendship and romantic side of Stackie because you see gossip rags and people doing that shit all the time when it comes to heterosexuals people. So how is it okay to ship real people in real life, but you can’t stomach it when it’s two hot guys who are black and white? Make that shit make sense.
I’m not going to outright and say to Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, if I ever see them, do ya’ll think you’ll ever get together? I wouldn’t do that if I see two coworkers at work that I thought should be together. That is rude as shit.
But if they somehow find my tumblr blog and think to themselves... hmm... maybe their might be something there that I didn’t realize because I can’t see the forest for the trees. Then I’ll feel like I did something good. Let these men find their happiness wherever they can get it. I’m happy if their happy and if they are happy together, then all the better.
Sambucky would not have a strong foundation without the magic of Stackie.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier wouldn’t have existed if it wasn’t for the crazy chemistry of Stackie.
You can’t fucking have one without the other. It’s like the chicken and the egg. One can’t exist without the other.
If you have any issues with any haters, point them out to me and we’ll gang up on them together with amazing examples of how Stackie is real, because we are small but mighty.
If I’m being too real for you, get the fuck off my post. This wasn’t meant for you.

Animal {Avengers Cast x Male Reader}
Requested by: @gameloversblog Wordcount: 1715 Summary: You play a Marvel antihero who has a pretty bad pottymouth. You finally get your own standalone film and invite your castmates over to watch. Warnings: Foul language.
To say that you brought a new life to the controversial character that you were playing was an understatement. Ever since you were young, you wanted to play a comic book superhero, or perhaps more aptly, an anti-hero because you were always a bit naughtier than the characters you grew up with. You swore an almost unprofessional amount, but your charm and skill was enough for you to keep the roles that you had, you requested to do a lot of your own stunts for the thrill of it, and, well, you were a bit of a flirt with everyone that you came across. So when there was a role opening up in the MCU as an anti-hero with a bit of a potty-mouth, you called your manager and told her that she would receive a big bonus if she managed to get you that audition. Needless to say, she got that bonus, and when you got the role, you bought her a brand new car, complete with a big bow on top, and a cut out of yourself for the backseat so she wouldn’t get lonely.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, these were meant to be family movies, and you didn’t get to swear as much as you had initially hoped. You did continue with your language when you messed up, which would never be in the bloopers unless they wanted to get an R rating on their own, and it became a bit of a joke with your castmates. In one scene that you filmed with Chris Evans and Scarlett Johanson, you actually shocked Evans so hard with your language that you missed a fighting cue and genuinely got struck in the head. He didn’t let up about that for a good month, but it was all light-hearted.
The movie was incredibly successful, as you had hoped that it would be. The critics loved it, and there was even praise on the way that you accurately portrayed your character - but there was one complaint. It wasn’t completely true to the character as you hadn’t been able to swear as much as they did. You brought in a couple of ‘hell’, ‘goddamn’ and ‘what the f-’ before you were cut off, but that was the extent that Marvel would let you do. It was literally signed into your contract that you could not improvise.
But now you were all smiles to the press, though your publicist was always on hand to give you a stern look, or clear your throat if your language started to go downhill. “It was fucking amazing!” was something that you couldn’t help but say when journalists asked about your experience. During one particularly memorable interview, you spewed out, “It was so fucking cool, like have you seen this shit? There’s like explosions all the goddamn time, and those are real, they don’t just put that shit in during editing, it’s right there, like holyyy mother of God, there was a time when I was scared I was going to be actually on fire, because of how close it was. Fucking burning up hot like Rhianna’s newest cd, you know?”
That interview showed on TV and had more bleeps than an episode of COPS. And you know that to be true because Robert Downey Jr called and told you that he had compared them as something fun to do. That interview also ended up on some videos of ‘Most cringy interviews’ which you didn’t completely understand. You had a blast, you were being yourself - it was the show hosts who looked baffled.
Out to celebrate the success of the movie making millions in the box office, you and co-star Jeremy Renner decided to hang out at his house with a couple of beers. Now that most of the press was over, and you didn’t have to go to any more premieres, it was so nice to be able to just hang out with friends. You were lounging in his living room, bottle in hand, telling a story about a scene that you did when you were in an action-comedy movie with some other famous actors. “So Mark Wahlberg has that expression on his face, you knew the one, where he looks all confused, like he needs to take a shit and doesn’t know how to get it out?” You laughed, and Jeremy nodded, knowing what you were talking about. “So I took the chance man, I had to take it, I just blew into my elbow and it made the biggest fucking fart sound, I’m talking about camera breaking loud man.”
Between laughs you heard your phone ringing. When you saw your manager’s name, you were expecting her to come down on you hard for swearing in the interviews. You had no idea that your life and your career were about to make a huge turn for the better. “Yo and hello,” You said, smiling at your cheesy line.
“I’m not calling to bitch at you, believe it or not,” Your manager sounded excited about something, which peaked your interest.
“I would never use the word bitch - I’d more say it’s complaining mixed with nagging,” You started. “All of which I know that I deserve. So what’s up, buttercup?”
“You managed to get a starring role, and I mean, big time starring role.”
“Oh, is someone trying to get a big Christmas bonus? What a coincidence that this is happening around the oh so busy clusterfuck of a holiday. You know - I don’t even remember auditioning for anything lately. What is it, what is it?”
Your manager said the name of the character that you had just played, who was originally just supposed to be a one-off character. “You were recieved really well, so they want to give you your own film. With at least a Mature rating so you can use those words you love so much.”
“I can finally say shit, dick, asshole, fuckfest?” You said, growing happy. You legitimately got up from Jeremy’s couch and started to do a happy dance.
“To a degree,” Your manager warned. “We’re still in talks about who is going to do the script, so you might be able to have some say in it...”
“Thank fuck for that. Do you know how hard it was to say darn with a straight face? Who says darn anymore? I wasn’t playing Cap!” Jeremy snickered behind you and you shot him a wide grin. “I’ll even write the script myself if they can’t find the perfect person. I practically am my character, you know.”
“Yes, I know. Everybody knows.” Your manager sighed. “I’ll put in a good word for you, you know that. Just hang tight. They’ll be sending you an announcement soon enough.”
-
Just over a year later, you were sitting in the living room of your spacious home with your best friends and castmates all around you. You managed to get a copy of the film before the premiere, and managed to talk everyone into coming over and watching it. And you, being a devious little thing, created a drinking game.
“Alright, so here’s the rules,” You said, standing in front of the TV before the film started. Your friends stopped talking amongst themselves and looked at you. You grinned like a maniac. Some of the biggest names in Hollywood were hanging out in your house right now. Suck on that critics who thought you’d never make it this far. You were one of them now. “I don’t have enough alcohol in the house to make you all take a shot at every swear-”
You were interrupted by a couple of laughs, so you gave a wink to Paul Rudd who had been the source of a couple of them. “-So how about you guys just have to take a swig of your beer? And a double if you’re referenced in the film.”
“I guess that sounds fair,” Jeremy said, settling into your second-favorite armchair.
“Why do you want us to get so drunk?” Scarlett Johansson asked, raising one of her perfect eyebrows in your direction. You shrugged before taking your seat, the best seat in the house, your favorite overstuffed chair.
Tumblr media
“Instagam, snapchat, facebook, tumblr,” You listed off the various social media sites that you could put their drunken pictures up on.
“I think my publicist would actually kill you,” Elizabeth Olsen chimed in, cracking open her own beer.
“Great! Think of the publicity that would generate for the film!” You joked with that same grin. “Marvel Superstar murdered by publicist of Elizabeth Olsen! The tragic story of a drinking game gone wrong! More details inside if you want to play along...”
“Alright, alright, we’ll play along but no cameras, okay?” Chris Evans said, opening a beer of his own. You couldn’t stop smiling. You absolutely loved when you got your way.
“Alright, ladies and gentlemen, are you ready for the best Marvel film in the world? Now presenting - me!” You pressed play and the movie started.
Almost immediately, your friends had to start taking drinks because of how often there were curse words. Nothing too bad, but just the usuals. Fuck, shit, damn. Not the overly offensive ones.
Your favorite part was slowly coming up. You kept shooting glances over at Chris Evans, which the others noticed, but said  nothing about. Chris was oblivious, paying more attention to the film rather than to the people around him.
“Darn,” A character in the movie said, albeit a young one.
“Language!” The camera whipped to your character, who was standing there in a heroic pose. Weapon in one hand, charming smile, looking good for the victim whom you just saved. “In this movie, we say fuck.”
The scene had the right effect. Everyone started to laugh, and Anthony Mackie was nudging Chris, encouraging him to take double the drinks.
“You know, I wasn’t in charge of writing that line, but I keep getting the flack from it.” He grudgingly picked up his beer and finished it off while the rest of the group cheered.

Engame Spoiler-y Review
READ THIS ONLY IF YOU WANT TO BE SPOILED. I just need to let my feelings out because I’m a nerd who has nothing better to do.
I don’t think the MC can make another movie like this. That is not to say that the MCE will never be able to make a film bigger or more spectacular than this, because they might. But it will never top the emotional impact of this film.
The MCU has been criticized (justly, I may add) to be series of “junk food” films – full of spectacle, but low on character development. This film is anything but that. The film feels more like a love letter to the characters and the fans. The spectacle was there, of course, but this time it was eclipsed by the small, minute scenes that give insight to our beloved superheroes.Before that, here are the films you probably should watch. Although the references are easy to spot, you might want to brush up on your knowledge of these films.
Avengers (2012)
Thor: The Dark World (I know. They really reminded us the worst MCU film exists lol)
Dr. Strange
Age of Ultron
Capt. America: TWS
Capt. America: Civil War
Iron Man 3
(EVERYTHING AFTER THIS IS SPOILER TERRITORY PLEASE STOP READING IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED. I MEAN IT.)
The film begins before the infamous Thanos snappening, with Hawkeye. The first scene itself was telling to what the movie aims to be. It was emotional and reminded us of the stakes – of what the heroes are fighting for. It was a good mood setter and on the get go, separates itself from Infinity War. If Infinity War was Thanos’ journey of gathering the Infinity Stones, then Endgame is the journey of the original six Avengers in their goal to undo Thanos’ handiwork. Now finally, I understand why this is not called Infinity War Part 2 – because it is not. The structure of the film itself is vastly different from IW because the focus is shifted from the plot to the characters themselves.And this was a tall order. We are talking about a decade long franchise of 20 plus films, all with their own tone and structure, and weaving them together into a coherent film with a solid plot and development is difficult. The Russo brothers, luckily, shine in this kind of storytelling. There is something so enticing with the way they handle the arcs of these characters without it feeling overly dramatic or feeling like a caricature. My second favourite emotional arc was Natasha/Black Widow’s story. Arguably, she had the biggest role to play in the Avengers’ success in the film.  Her sacrifice in Vormir to get the Soul Stone was gutting. I literally cried partly because no one expected her to die – she was never in anyone’s death prediction list – and partly because you expect a spy like her to be anything but self-sacrificing. Her fight with Clint/Hawkeye on who between them should be sacrificed to get the stone was hard to watch. They are bestfriends who are willing to die for each other; but they understand the necessity of the sacrifice because they are also heroes who have to do whatever it takes for them to win. Their dialogue was the best of the film, and Natasha’s “I don’t judge people on their worst mistake” is a sober reminder that these two go way back and has been each other’s strength and support all throughout the film franchise. It’s devastating to see Natasha plummet to her death, but it served an indispensable push for the heroes to succeed.
My favourite arc was Steve/Cap (SURPRISE! Lmao). Steve’s role was noticeably reduced in IW and this film made up for it in a major way. Let me just get this out of the way, but the styling team really did god’s work in dressing up Steve this film and the Russo brothers’, bless them, choice to have every outfit of Steve showcased is the very definition of fan service. It was gratuitous but honestly, I am not complaining. There was a running joke about Steve’s butt being “America’s Best Ass”™ (Thank you Scott Lang for that) and having Steve himself recognize it was not only satisfying to watch but also the truest, realest thing that has been uttered in the film. LolKidding aside, Steve’s journey was the most important. People argue that Tony was the foundation of the Avengers but it was Steve that kept them together. And Steve kept them together. It’s more than just him giving rousing, inspiring speeches – Steve has always served as the moral compass of the group. Somehow, Steve always knew the right thing to do, but it never felt deus-ex-machina esque, instead it always felt like it was coming from a place of wisdom and compassion. It’s not that Steve knows what to do, it’s just that Steve sees that there is something that can be done, and actually does it. Steve has always been a hero. That was the journey that was set-up for him since his first outing in the MCU, and Endgame paid that off big time. When Steve wielded the Mjolnir, I tell you, I screamed loudly. It was so satisfying to see this straight-laced hero being recognized as someone worthy. His toe-to-toe with Thanos was amazing to watch and really reminds you that Steve’s physicality and fight scenes are some of the best in all of the MCU. So when Steve returns to Infinity Stones in their proper timeline and decides not to come back to the present to, in his words, “live life”, I shed a tear. It was well deserved. This man who has been fighting wars all his life deserve a life of peace. Steve doesn’t die, but he gives up his mantle and gives his shield to Sam/Falcon. It was a good way to bookend his journey. And I am excited to see how Anthony Mackie handles this huge role in the future.
Tony Stark is the first Stark casualty this April. After his rescue from deep space, we find out that Tony and Pepper got married and have a daughter. When the daughter came to the screen, I knew immediately that Tony Stark is unlikely to survive. Tony dies a hero, sacrificing himself so that Thanos is defeated. It was Tony who wielded the stones to snap Thanos and his alien army out of existence, and his death, although emotional to watch, was really not surprising for me. Tony came to us first being this selfish, brash, genius billionaire and his journey ended with him making the sacrifice that deals the final blow against Thanos.
Scott Lang shined in this film. His funny one-liners provide a welcome reprieve from the heaviness of the film. And he was actually instrumental in the Avengers winning. Nebula was also a stand out and played an important role in moving the plot forward. Who knew a robot had so many conflicting emotions lol. Kudos to Karen Gillan for bringing complexity to her character and I cannot wait to see her in future MCU films again. All the ‘dusted’ characters come back. All of them. And not just them everyone in the MCU almost made a cameo. Hoping this film rakes in billions because it’s probably expensive having so many of the cast in the same scenes. Haha.
Some stand-out moments:
1. Thor’s beer belly
2. Wanda/Scarlet Witch and Thanos rematch (Thanos got beat, BTW)
3. The all-female team-up of Capt. Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Okoye, Pepper Potts, Valkyrie, and Mantis
4. Thor double wielding Stormbreaker and Mjolnir
5. Stephen Strange having like one line and being a badass
6. Spider-Man being… Spider-Man
7. Peter Quill being kicked in the balls by Gamora
8. Everytime the camera pans to Steven Grant Rogers
9. The close-up of Steven Grant Rogers’ ass
There are flaws to this film. But honestly, I leave that to the actual critics. It gave me what I wanted to see and showed me things I did not expect to see. It was emotional. As a fan who has watched all the films multiple times, as someone who obsessed over the details and made theories, as someone who holds these comic book characters close to my heart, I truly enjoyed this film. It was worth it.

The Language of Limbo - Part 2
Pairing : Chris Evans x Plus Size Reader ; Marvel Cast x Plus Size Reader
Warnings : Language
Word Count : 2.3k
Tumblr media
You've been preparing yourself for the past two months, each day getting more and more at ease with the movements of your fighting scenes. One of the highlights of one of your rehearsal session was the day where you met Evans for the first time.
You were currently finishing up the first half of the session and Mason granted you a break. You sat down, took a gulp of your water and noticed your shoelaces untied. You leaned down and were in the middle of tying them when a deep but calm voice spoke up beside you. "Hi there." You looked up and felt your heart beat faster than ever, due the fact that your celebrity crush stood in front of you. "Hein?", you breathed out, mesmerized by his handsome face and blue eyes. He chuckled and you looked elsewhere, your face flushed in embarrassment. You stood up and finally replied back with a shy smile, "Hi". "It was some cool moves you did back there", he commented.
"Thank you but the credit really goes to Mason, he's the real pro here", you chuckled and pointed towards your coach. "Perhaps but you did good, you deserve some credit too", he told you and slightly pumped his right shoulder against yours, which surprised you. A wide smile appeared on your face and thanked him again. "Are you casually training here or …", he asked intrigued. "I'm actually Marvel's new…", you started but then realized your mistake. "Oh shit", you covered your mouth. His eyes widened and his mouth opened in a 'oh' motion. "You're Y/C/N, aren't you?" You switched from leg to leg, uncomfortably for spoiling your arrival into the production. "Nope, don't know what you're talking about", you faked, heat invading your whole body. He laughed loudly before comforting you, "Hey don't worry I won't tell anybody. Your secret is safe with me."
"Oh God, I'm fucking it up already", you chuckled nervously. He laughed again but eventually calmed down. "Well nice to meet you. I'm Chris but something tells me you know that already", he whispered with a smug smile. You nodded and replied, "Yeah, nice to meet you too. I'm Y/N." He was called from the other end of the room and turned back at you to tell you goodbye. "I guess we'll see each other soon Y/N", winked and jogged towards his own coach. You face-palmed and cursed yourself for ruining your contract's confidentiality closure. "Y/N, are you ready?", asked Mason at your left. You jumped a little, not expecting him standing next to you and he laughed at the gesture, "Sorry". You shook your head, hand resting on your heart and affirmed him you were ready for the rest of the training.
It was now the day before the first table read and you were beyond nervous. You were unable to eat properly during the day, had trouble to focus on your lines and when you decided to go to bed early, you couldn't sleep. "Goddammit", you breathed out in frustration, your eyes glossy because of the stress that was invading you. "Deep breath, inhale, exhale", you repeated in the darkness of the room. Silent tears cascaded your face, the pressure too much to bear. You finally got a grip on your emotions and eventually fell asleep.
A couple of hours later and you definitely didn't woke up like this. You grumpily marched towards your bathroom and hopped in the shower, the warm water splash on your sore body. Half an hour later, you were showered and dressed. You took your script and grabbed your car keys, settling for the Studio's direction. You had 3 hours in front of you until the table read but because you couldn't sleep well, you decided to head early and grab a coffee on your way. You parked your car and walked to a close park, settled down with your script and looked at the sunrise shining in front of you, the small breeze refreshing you. You went over the script, reading it one more time and hoped for the best. Even if you were cast for the movie, the table read was a crucial step. If you didn't show professionalism right away, it wasn't uncommon for directors and producers to let go the person and recast someone else.
"Y/N?", you heard beside you. You turned around and saw Elizabeth Olson stand in front of you, confused on seeing you after so long. "Hey, Elizabeth how are you?", you stood up with a wide smile and hugged her. "I..I'm fine, what about you? What are you doing here?", she asked happily. You chuckled and simply replied you had a work meeting without revealing that it was for Marvel. "That's amazing. I'm so happy to see you again after what, 5 years?", she continued. You nodded, "Yeah sorry I know we were supposed to stay in contact after 'Godzilla' but life just got so crazy", you apologized to which she shook her head. "Tell me about it. When it's not filming, it's press touring. I know how that feels but I'm really glad I got to see you again. We'll have to go for lunch one time."
"I'm happy too and yes, we definitely have", you smiled widely. She checked on her watch and frowned, "I'm sorry but I have to go." "Of course, no problem", you reassured her. She hugged you goodbye and you smirked in anticipation, the surprise being totally unexpected. You checked your watch too and slowly made your way to the meeting point. When you arrived, you saw a line of A-list actors standing in front of you, their backs turned at you. You felt your body slowly begin to tremble in excitement and fear and took a deep breath to calm your nerves down. You bowed your head so that no one would pay attention to you and waited at the end of the group. No one seemed to notice you, each one of them focused on their respective conversation. There was laughter, friends happily chatting and reconnecting after months apart. "I know you missed me", giggled Robert Downey Junior. "How couldn't I", replied someone who's voice wasn't familiar to you.
"Who got to read the whole script this time?", asked Anthony Mackie. "I did", replied the original 6 Avengers (Evans, Scarlet, RDJ, Hemsworth, Ruffalo and Renner) simultaneously. "Lucky bastards", someone else joked. You chuckled slowly but was cut short when you heard someone mention your character's name. "We have no idea who it is", commented Mark Ruffalo to the rest of the audience. Your lifted your head cautiously to try to get their facial expressions when you made eye contact with Evans who was already looking at you. Your eyes widened and you immediately bowed down your head. The next thing heard among the blabbering was Chris' loud laugh. "What's so funny?", asked Scarlet in amusement. "Oh nothing, I'm sure whoever will play Y/C/N isn't very far."
It was at that precise moment when Kevin Feige, the Russo Brothers and the casting director entered the room, "Hello everybody and welcome back", greeted the Marvel Studios' president. "Here we go again for another 4 intense months", he continued to which everyone hollered in agreement. "As per usual only a few selected among you got the opportunity to read the whole script, such as the ones part of the original 6, Benedict Cumberbatch and Marvel's new addition." Your eyes almost popped out of your skull when you heard you actually had the true and whole script in your hands. You quickly figured out that they were testing you, seeing if your were trustworthy and what Feige mentioned next confirmed your suspicions. "Since there's no spoiler out there, I think we did the right choice in choosing Y/N Y/L/N to join the production." You heard someone gasp and recognized her voice. "No way?", exclaimed Elizabeth ecstatic. "Who?", asked RDJ confused. You had to chuckle at his puzzled face, being well aware that they had no idea who you were besides Elizabeth or maybe the ones who saw you as an extra or small role in a movie. "Where is she? Y/N?", called out Kevin Feige. You took a deep breath and raised your arm. "There she is. Will you step out of the shadows and come here, please?",he asked amused. You did as he said, crossing the assembly that had split in two just like the Red See, allowing you to step closer to the men in charge. "Hello, it's an honor to meet you", you said shyly towards them since you hadn't had the chance to meet them yet. They greeted you in return and you positioned yourself next to the casting director Mr Stewart who smiled widely and side hugged you eagerly, happy to see you again.
Everyone sat down and the table read began. You weren't really sure if you had to recite your lines with a neutral voice or already get into character. You already had done a table read before but never such an important one. You watched as the others actors around you sounded far more as their characters than themselves and decided to act along, your voice resonating the way you wanted for the character and your facial expressions matching the situations occurring in the script. You knew you had to prove that you were the right choice and felt everyones eyes burn your skin, whether in evaluating you, in concentration following the lines in front of them or just because they were intrigued by what you could bring to the dynamic already set in place.
"We're going to stop here people because the rest are quiet the spoilers for the rest of the cast and we wouldn't want that, would we", said Kevin Feige while ogling Tom Holland, making the young men shake his head in amusement. "Yeah, yeah I know, the Spoil-Machine right here", he joked. You chuckled along the rest of them and your eyes met Elizabeth's, who smiled while lifting her thumbs up and you smiled brightly at the gesture, happy to have at least an acquaintance on set. The Marvel Studios' president exited the room, leaving the Russo brothers and the actors behind. You felt a little tap on your shoulder and turned on your left side, coming face to face with Mark Ruffalo. "Hello there, I'm Mark", he said and you chuckled. "Hi, I'm Y/N, it's nice to meet you." You caught Robert Downey Jr jog behind Mark until he stood beside him. He looked at you with a wide smirk and commented, "What do you think about the original science bros? Not bad right?" Your eyes widened and giggled nervously but before you could say anything, Elizabeth and Scarlet were beside you. "Don't scare the poor woman already, Downey", said Scarlet. Lizzie grabbed your attention by hugging you. "You sneaky little thing. I can't believe you didn't tell me when I saw you outside that you were casted. Wait does Aaron know?", she blabbered. You laughed at her enthusiasm, "I'm not allowed to say anything I'm sure you know what it is like and regarding Aaron, no not yet."
"Who's Aaron?", asked suddenly Chris Evans out of nowhere. Elizabeth rolled her eyes before telling him it was Aaron-Taylor Johnson, who's also part of Marvel's family and your best friend. Evans nodded attentively while you tried to calm your nerves down, feeling heat creep your body noticing that he was coming closer to where you stood. When his blue eyes locked with yours you were done. It took you a few seconds to realize that he was talking to you. "Excuse me, what?", you mumbled. He chuckled and replied while presenting his hand, "I'm happy to officially meet you Y/N". You shook his hand and had to control yourself to not smile, because he knew you were casted before anyone else, thanks to your clumsiness. "Nice to meet you too." "I'm looking forward to work with you", he commented and winked, before joining another group of actors. You swallowed harshly, took a deep breath and turned towards the people in front of you, who were smirking. "Hmm I can't wait to start the shooting", implied RDJ, mischief shinning in his eyes and voice. You nodded shyly, not able to look at him or the others in the eyes, still impressed to be standing next to so many talented people. "Do you have any ride for tonight?", asked Jeremy Renner. You frowned not really understanding his question. "Ride?"
"Yeah, all the actors are invited for dinner at the Russo's Restaurant", commented Hemsworth. "Oh I didn't know, I'm probably just gonna grab something and eat at home", you responded. "Nonsense, you're part of the team now, you're invited too", quickly said Joe Russo who caught the conversation. "Alright, thank you then’’, you said with a wide smile. "So, the ride?", said Renner again. "I came here with my car so if anyone needs a ride and besides I don't really know where the restaurant is", you blabbered. "Let's just split then, if that's ok with you", mentioned Scarlet. "No no problem at all." They gathered everyone and started to form small groups. You ended up taking Chris (Evans), Elizabeth, Scarlet and Jeremy in your car. You were marching towards the parking when you remembered that your car was garbage compared to the hot wheels they were used to drive. You chuckled nervously and declared, "Sorry it's not a Royce Rolls but it rolls". Sensing your nervous and cracking voice, Elizabeth calmed you down, "Don't worry Y/N." You clenched your jaw and gave her a small smile, not convinced and slightly ashamed. Having Chris sitting next to you wasn't helping you calm your nerves down. You connected your phone to the radio and decided to put on your favorite artist of the moment. You pressed play on and Lizzo's song Juice came on. You immediately felt the pressure release and began to mumble the words to yourself while focusing on the road. "This song is awesome, who is it?", asked Chris besides you. You told him more about Lizzo's music and saw glimpses of him attentively following you talking so passionately about the artist in question.
You soon arrived at your destination and entered the fancy place. During the evening the actors insisted on you switching places at every meal served, so that you could chat a little with everyone. "So anyone in your life, Y/N?", asked Mackie with a smug smirk. You almost chocked on your drink not expecting it and cleared your voice, "Nope not at the moment." "Hmm interesting", he feigned and looked at the others. You frowned but eventually shook your head in amusement. It was starting to get late and you decided to cut the night short, everyone getting where they were standing. You dropped the actors at the Studios where they had their cars but noticed that Chris had just a tab to much to drink. "Hey where do I drop you?", you asked him this time concerned. "What?" You chuckled and told him that you would give him a ride because you didn't want him to drive in his state. "Ohh I can hold my liquor", he arguments. "Come on, I won't be able to sleep peacefully knowing that you drove all the way and not knowing if you arrived safely. Let me take you." He raised one of his eyebrows, smirking when you realized how that may have sounded. "I mean…let me take you in like drop you at your place." He cracked up seeing you try to justify yourself before telling you the hotel he was staying. It wasn't far away from the Studios and told him goodnight. "You seem like a cool person. Goodnight Y/N, see you soon." You smiled and replied, "Thanks, you seem like a cool person yourself." You saw him walking inside the building and chuckled to yourself, "This man will be the death of me."

Why It Worked: Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 2
Tumblr media
Introduction: Picking up were we last left off on Why It Worked, Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe expands on this ever expanding franchise with new characters, new stories and new creative visions. This Phase is often regarded as the “hit or miss” period in the MCU, but I’d argue it succeeds so much more than it falters. So without further adieu, let’s get started.
Tumblr media
The Plots: Phase 2 comprises mainly of sequels to the Phase 1 movies, and yet they all feel natural and very much stand on their own. Iron Man 3 picks up where The Avengers left off and sees Tony Stark battle with PTSD. All the while, he faces off against a notorious terrorist called the Mandarin (more on him later). Thor: The Dark World finds the Norse god of thunder protecting the 9 Realms from the Dark Elves, who’s sole purpose is to drown the universe in darkness. Captain America: The Winter Solider shows who Steve Rogers adjusts to the modern world as he faces off against the mysterious foe, the Winter Solider. And finally, Avengers: Age of Ultron finds Earth’s Mightiest Heroes face off against an A.I. who’s idea of saving the world is destroying it with a meteor. There are 2 films this Phase that aren’t sequels: Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man. The former opens up the cosmic side of the MCU by introducing a rag tag team of misfits who must ban together to stop an vengeful warlord from reeking havoc upon the galaxy. The latter is a heist movie involving a guy trying to be a good role model to his daughter while also communicating with ants. This films bring in the same amount of charm and humor the first Phase brought and then some. Guardians of the Galaxy in particular had some of the smartest and well timed jokes in the MCU up until that point. Not only that, but there this Phase also brought in life changing events that carried on in future films. Tony’s paranoia caused him to build Ultron, S.H.I.E.L.D. became compromised and ultimately destroyed in Winter Solider and even with that, HYDRA lives on in other parts of the world by Age of Ultron. None of this would’ve at all been possible if it weren’t for the creative talents of Shane Black, Alan Taylor, Joe and Anthony Russo, James Gunn, Joss Whedon (again), and Peyton Reed.
Tumblr media
Cast and Characters: Since we’re all familiar with the core Avengers at this point, let’s introduce the new faces starting with Sam Wilson aka Falcon. Sam is Steve Roger’s new friend introduced in Winter Solider. A veteran himself with a smart and charming personality, he and Steve hit it off almost instantly. Plus, Anthony Mackie is just right for the role, making the character funny, smart and tough in his own right. Next up we have the Guardians of the Galaxy, featuring Peter Jason Quill, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccon and Groot. Peter starts off as a Han Solo-type of character, but throughout the film we find his full of layers. He’s got charm, humor, heart, anger, cockiness, he’s basically the every man in this wacky side of the galaxy. All brought to life flawlessly by Chris Pratt. Gamora is a headstrong and dangerous woman who plays against the love interest trope in this film as she has great resentment for her father Thanos and sister Nebula. It also helps that she’s played brilliantly by Zoe Saldana, who brings the right amount of humor and fierce veracity to the character. Drax is meant to be this stoic tragic figure who seeks to avenge his fallen family. And yet his lack of understanding metaphors and Dave Bautista’s performance make him one of the funniest characters in this franchise. Then we have Rocket and Groot, a raccoon and a tree man who became household names over night. Rocket is a fowl mouth, sarcastic and crude rodent with a good heart under that ruff exterior. Groot meanwhile is wears his heart on his bark, having such a calm and gentle demeanor, while also not being afraid to be the muscle Rocket needs. Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel bring these characters to life through their commitment and strife; I couldn’t have picked anyone better. Moving on from the Guardians, we have Scott Lang, the thief with a heart of gold who’s trying to be a good role model for his daughter, Cassie. It goes without saying that Scott’s funny (being played by comedic actor Paul Rudd and all), but he’s also very smart and caring for those around him. His skills in robbery and breaking and entering make him perfectly capable of dawning the Ant-Man costume, at least in the eyes of Hank Pym. Speaking of which, the original Ant-Man from the comics is now a wise, crusty old man with a good heart. Michael Douglas gives an excellent performance as this character, making it believable that he was at one time a superhero and is now passing the torch to a younger suitor. Hank’s daughter, Hope is a smart, stern and strong woman who at first resents her father for pushing her away after her Mom went MIA. After learning the truth, she comes to respect him and Scott a little more. Evangeline Lilly is perfect as Hope, delivering the right amount of humor and heart to. These new characters are just as memorable and as well fleshed out as the ones we’ve come to know and love at this point. And that’s not even mentioning Yondu, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, Vision, Harley Keener, Luis, Dave and Kurt, and Cassie.
Tumblr media
The Big Baddies: I’ll just say this upfront: The Mandarin twist wasn’t bad. Unexpected, yes, but for the story Shane Black was trying to tell, it works wonders. I get fans wanted what we were advertised, but I think what we got works better. Iron Man 3 was a personal story first and foremost, so having him face of against an evil space wizard, while it would’ve been cool, it wouldn’t have fit with the overall narrative. Besides, Sir Ben Kingsley gave an excellent performance, being a menacing threat and a comedic fool all in one. Then we get Malekith, the quintessential example people point to when people say “Marvel villains suck.” <sigh> He’s not that bad folks. Malekith is a stone cold Dark Elf with one goal in life: to plunge the universe into darkness. He’s merciless, he’s dead serious and he sees the Asgardians as beneath him. Yeah, he wasn’t on screen for that long, but Christopher Eccleston gave a solid performance. Alexander Pierce makes for a really compelling villain because he firmly believes himself to be the savior of the world. Robert Redford brings out his calm and professional demeanor, while also making the character charismatic and intriguing. Ronan the Accuser is a power hunger warlord that sees the people of Xandar as beneath him, to the point were instead of siding with the peace treaty between the Kree and Nova Corp, he opts to try and obliterate the planet with the power of an Infinity Stone. Lee Pace gives a solid performance bringing the character’s anger and hatred to life and I look forward to see him again in Captain Marvel. Ultron is exactly what you get when you have the personality of Tony Stark and mix it with the genetic code of HAL9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Ultron has charisma, humor and a very passive aggressive attitude towards the Avengers. James Spader was perfect casting in this role as he gives a robot bent on destroying the Earth as his idea of saving it so much personality. Darren Cross is the young novitiate of Hank Pym turned corporate businessman attempting to sell Pym’s technology to the wrong hands. Corey Stoll manages to make the character funny, quirky and intimidating all in one and definitely deserves as much credit as the rest of his costars. The villains in Phase 2 are a step up from Phase 1 and will only get better come Phase 3.
Tumblr media
Costumes and VFX: Not only were the villains a step up from Phase 1, but the costumes and CGI has improved significantly as well. Some familiar stuff such as Iron Man’s armor, Cap’s costume and the Hulk’s design have been given significant upgrades with each film. All the armors Tony has made in between Avengers and Iron Man 3 look excellent; no two armors look alike and the way they’re incorporated into battle is better than ever. Cap’s giving a more stealth like costume in Winter Solider and it fits very well with the spy angel the Russo brothers were going for. Then we have the look of the Hulk, who still brought to life through motion capture performance and looks more lifelike with more hair and softer looking skin. With the addition of new characters and new environments, there also came the use of new costumes and unique uses of CG. Despite being revealed to be a fraud, the Mandarin’s costume looks spectacular, giving him a modern terrorist look while also keeping his traditional green rob and a ring on each finger. The look of Asgard received a significant upgrade since the first Thor film, as it now has a Norse mythology feel and the costumes on the citizens look very authentic. Also, the costume and make-up department went above and beyond to make the Dark Elves distinct from previous film/tv portrayals of elves. They have pale faces with pointed ears and noses, pitch black armor and soulless eyes. The Kurse himself looks amazing with all the horns, body armor and actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaji (try saying that 3x fast) making the character physically intimidating. The Winter Solider’s metal arm is brought to life with actor Sebastian Stan wearing a plastic sleeve while CG was used in post. Also, for Hayley Atwell to reprise her role as a 93 year old Peggy Carter, she performed her scenes with a few trace markers while Lola VFX (who made Chris Evans skinny in the first Captain America film) added in the features of an elderly woman to make effect feel seamless. Then we get the Guardians and boy is this film littered with a mix of practical and digital effects. Starting with Rocket James Gunn’s brother, Sean, played the little rodent on set to interact with the cast while Bradley Cooper recorded his lines in New York. For reference, they used a real life raccoon named Oreo (who recently passed away, RIP) as well as a lifelike model before CG companies like Framestore brought him to life. Same treatment was applied to Groot, who was played by Krystian Godlewski on set and sources such as a botanical garden in London was used as reference. Zoe Saldana spent at least 5 hours a day in the make-up chair and the final result is flawless. Dave Bautista meanwhile spent at least 4 hours a day in the make up chair and looks just as believable as Saldana. The locations explored in Guardians such as the Kyln and Knowhere, are brought to life through practical effects for filming with the additional CG for wide shots. It all looks so real and authentic like the characters are actually there. Ant-Man’s costume is significantly different from the comics, but is very practical and lifelike. It also helps that when ever something shrink or grows, the effect is a subtle nodded to how Jack Kirby drew them in the comics. Lastly, we have Ultron, who’s brought to life with James Spade in a motion capture suit and a lifelike model used as reference. There’s plenty of other examples of the amazing use of CG and practical effects in these films, such as the de-aging of Michael Douglas in Ant-Man, the way Wanda Maximoff uses her magic, Yondu’s arrow and so much more, but to list them all will take forever.
Tumblr media
Where it Falters: Edger Wright having a falling out with Marvel producer Kevin Feige robbed audiences of what could’ve been a great film. Not that Ant-Man was bad, quite the opposite. But having seen Scott Pillgrim vs. The World and Baby Driver, I feel as though it was a missed opportunity to let Edger make the film he wanted to make. Also, for a place called “the Dark World” it’s not really that dark. Also, I feel as though Pietro Maximoff was killed off a little too soon. I mean, we just met him and Aaron Taylor-Johnson was doing a good job as the character. Narratively speaking it makes sense, but I personally would’ve kept him around until Infinity War. Lastly, the Marvel One-Shot All Hail the King hinted that the real Mandarin was out there. It’s now been 5 years since that short and we’ve heard nothing from this “real” Mandarin. I’m hoping this get’s addressed sooner or later, otherwise it just feels like an attempt to silence detractors of Iron Man 3.
Tumblr media
Conclusion: Marvel significantly improved their craft with Phase 2 and continues to grow strong to this day. With colorful new characters, exciting new locations, impressive VFX and costumes and great acting all all around, this is only a prelude in terms of quality for what might be the greatest era of the MCU yet. Thanks so much for reading and I’ll see you soon ;)

I just finished watching TFATWS 01X04 and here are some scattered thoughts:
There's literally only so much you can do with acting and cinematography. Even when they're both stellar. If your plot is weak and the motivations and side characters are bland, and the antagonists' plans feel rushed and not thought through then what can I say, I'm gonna end up glancing at my phone instead of paying attention. Predictability is just your average day when it comes to superhero stories but there's a limit as to how much you can actually excuse.
I'm gonna go backwards since the ending is what I have freshest in my mind right now but from the top of my head:
You… want to kill Captain America. You make plans to meet up with the Falcon but you have already stated your desire to kill Captain America. You're the leader of an organisation which has allegedly worldwide reach. You're supposed to have a plan. But when you throw Captain America's buddy against a pillar and he stops moving you just… leave? Like that? Without finishing the job? Okay.
I get it if she's scared. I do. But she literally blew up a building with multiple people inside just last episode. Where'd that determination go? Where's the fire of your revolution at? You see Cap get mad and you just haul ass and leave??? What kind of nonsense bullshit is that??? Didn't want to leave any plot points unanswered for next episode did you, writers???
No seriously what the actual fuck you make a move against Captain Walmart and when he's about to retaliate you just... retire? Leaving yourselves vulnerable? And don't tell me it's because they're fucking amateurs because those people were wielding combat knives and clearly had had training (regardless of how much; clearly less so than any of the other main characters but case in point is they're still trained). Now you just have a havoc Walker going on a bloodthirsty killing spree which of course is very plot convenient but it just feels so... poorly written.
Speaking of poorly written: Lamar. They did the man dirty. And I don't mean no disrespect but he was the blandest, most plain character in the entire show thus far. No amount of outstanding acting from the performer's part (who intuitively led us to believe Lamar was, in fact, a character with nuance and potential) will save him from what he ended up being: cannon fodder to fuel the white man's motivation. One would assume content creators learn from their mistakes; apparently, they do not.
Something else... "the Dora Milage have no authority here"... and America does... in European soil? Don't forget yourself.
Sorry but as an European it makes me mad that they just gloss over these scenes like so. Excuse you.
Anyway that's just colonialist American television bullshit for you.
Military propaganda blablabla
I really have nothing to say about Karli other than the fact that no matter how honourable her motive and how strong her determination, she'll probably just end up being a weak minded leader (because this is Disney and supremacists who go against xenophobes are bad). I mean… I don't dislike her. I just don't like her. Massive kudos to the actress for her performance though, the scene where Zemo shoots her and destroys the serum vial was brutal. Less so the funeral speech scene but it was all in all pretty good so no complaints from me there.
Speaking of no complaints: Wyatt Rusell. He's killing it. The acting he does in close-up shoots is just, amazing. It's a shame such talent and, let's be real, genuine passion and work is being lost with all the fucking idiots plaguing the fandom who are deadass sending him death threats over what may possibly be one of the best performances in an MCU project, ever. I literally have nothing but praise for this man's work. Absolutely outstanding.
Speaking of (x2) one of the best performances in the MCU: Not only is Anthony Mackie showing us the full Juilliard graduate experience, he's finally being able to give Sam the complexity and nuance his character so rightfully deserves. Sebastian Stan is of course a top tier actor and, let's be real, the opening scene with the WS conditioning being lifted was simply heartbreaking, but his talents cannot compare to Mackie's (this episode in particular)
However they generally even each other out and their chemistry makes their complimentary roles shine even further. Massive kudos to both of them for giving two characters who would otherwise be left in the dark extreme realism and in the case of Sam, an innate compassion and humanity I would have never expected from a show like this. Sam is an intelligent and driven character who is so preoccupied both by his loved ones and by the people he's supposed to be up against that it's just absolutely mind blowing how anyone could take a look at him and say he does not deserve the shield. He is what the shield ought to represent. He is what the shield should aspire to be. Not what it'll ever be nonetheless (can you tell I fucking dislike America's guts)
The Dora Milage were a very welcome addition and the fight scene might just be my favourite this episode. The choreography was a little clumsy in my opinion but that might've been just the way it was shot in order to make it more chaotic so... it'll pass. I hope to see more of them in the future (especially if they beat Walker's ass again)
Zemo my beloved war criminal ❤️
I have many more thoughts regarding scenery and music and of course the nuance of the acting in specific scenes but mainly yeah this was it
Uhhh 7/10 could do better but overall enjoyable let's hope next episode doesn't disappoint XOXO gossip ralph

Let Me Protect You Part 2 Chapter 12
Pairings: Chris Evans x OFC Emilia
Warnings: swearing?, feelings of worthlessness
Word Count: 1.5k+
Summary: Now that Chris and Emilia have established their relationship, she moves into his house after her brother decides to live in New York. Emilia is in bliss, thinking maybe her life will finally be at peace.  But are things always that easy in Emilia’s life?
It was exciting being at a Wizard World; almost everyone was dressed up as their favorite characters. It was amazing to see how much work and detail went into these costumes; yet here you were, walking around in a plain t-shirt and jeans.
You ambled around the crowd for hours, looking at all the things to buy as you proudly wore you VIP pass.   Before long, you noticed some girls start staring at you; pointing at you very obviously. Your face started becoming red from embarrassment, thinking maybe you didn’t scrub your tear streaked face enough that morning.
Your heart rate skipped a beat as you tried to hold your head up and kept walking straight.  The soft murmurs started to become louder as you realized more and more people were starting to look at you.  Panic slowly started to creep up on you as you sped up your walking.
“Hey” a young woman stopped in front of you, making you pause your steps.  “Are you dating Chris Evans?” she asked, her eyes wide as she stared at you.
You froze, not knowing what to say or do.  You and Chris never really discussed about going public with your relationship and now was definitely not the time for you to speak about it.
“Ummm…I….excuse me” you stammered out as you stepped around her, quickly picking up your pace.
You found the bathrooms and you made your escape, shutting the stall door behind you and latching it shut. Leaning your head up against the door, you let out a sigh of relief; happy to be away from prying eyes.  “Get a grip Emilia” you said under your breath.
Lately, you felt as if the world was out to get you; ever since that article of you and Chris surfaced. Those hurtful comments were always on your mind and you were starting to believe them.  You believed you weren’t good enough for Chris that he could do so much better.
Needing your breathing to regain to normal, you thought of happier times; times with Chris and you when things were peaceful.  After what felt like eternity, you emerged from the stall and washed your hands before returning to the floor.
You noticed a sign stating that the Avengers Panel would begin soon so you walked in through the door.
“VIP passes can go straight to the front row” the security guard stated as he saw your pass.  You gave him a polite smile as you made your way to the front of the audience, taking a seat dead center.
It wasn’t long before the announcing came onstage, the crowd cheering as he began to speak.
“Are you guys ready for an amazing panel!!!????” he roared into the microphone as the audience cheered and hollered.  Your face lit up in a smile as you clapped along.
“Well lets not delay any further.  We have Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, and Chris Evans!”
The crowd was on their feet, including yourself as you clapped your hands and whistled as the men came on the stage.  All your worries and troubles seemed to escape your body as you saw you handsome boyfriend cross the stage, taking a seat right next to Sebastian on the couch.
The announcer talked with the guys for a while about the newest Captain America movie; your eyes never leaving Chris’ body as he talked animatedly about the film.  You loved how enthralled and excited he got when he talked about the movie; knowing damn well how proud he was of them.
“Alright, lets take some fan questions now” the announcer said and you turned your head, seeing a line of people gathering at the microphone in the middle of the aisle.
Chris had yet to see you and you weren’t surprise; he had no idea if you had come down to the con today. You were hoping at some point he would notice you but you didn’t want to make it obvious.
“Does everyone get along on the set?” an audience member asked shyly.
“Listen” Sebastian started to say, “I’m being serious when I say this.  We are all family on set.  We’re together for months at a time and it’s really great.”
One by one, audience members asks questions as the guys answered; Mackie cracking jokes the entire time; which it felt like a relief to laugh again.
“My question is for Chris” a voice said loud and clearly through the microphone and you tilted your head to see.  She was beautiful; tall and blonde with legs for miles.  You were jealous instantly from the sight of her as you looked down. From the time you met Chris, you had gained a few pounds; not a ton, but enough to make you feel self-conscious even though he continued to call you beautiful every single day.  “Are you dating someone?”  Your eyes widened at her question, unaware of how to react; unaware of how Chris would react to it.
Turning to face him, you could see his face tint with pink as his leg bounced up and down.  He held the microphone close to his lips as he spoke. “Umm, no comment” he said with a laugh, hoping to ease the tension in the crowd.
There was a lot of whining in the crowd as they wanted a definitive answer from him.
“Oh come on Chris!”
“We’ve seen the pictures!”
“Just tell us!”
These people were relentless and you were starting to get uncomfortable.  Your eyes never left Chris and you knew he still didn’t see you in the front of the crowd.
Luckily, Mackie eased the tension.  “Oh come on guys!  Let the guy have some privacy” he joked with a quick punch to Chris’ arm and it looked like Chris was able to relax at his friends’ words.
“You deserve better than the girl in the pictures!” someone called from the back of the audience and your heart panged at their words.  You covered your face with your hair; making sure to keep your eyes on Chris.  He seemed to get even more fidgety and you knew his anxiety was kicking in.  You wanted nothing more than to run up on stage and comfort him; but at the same time, you were starting to believe what the person had said.  Did he truly deserve better than you?  You felt like you gave him nothing but a hard time; your fucked up tilt-a-whirl emotions was making him navigate when he should be relaxing, destressing from his movie roles.
Thankfully the panel didn’t last much longer and he didn’t have to answer too many more questions as the rest of the guys stepped in for him.  As the guys on stage got up from their spots on the couch, Chris finally caught eye contact with you; his eyes immediately widening as he realized you were in the audience the entire time.
He gave you a small smile before he was ushered off the stage; everyone in the audience being roused from their seats as you stood up with them.  You made your way slowly out of the auditorium with the crowd as your eyes scanned the main floor.  Not sure what else to do, you made your way back up to the hotel room.
It wasn’t long after when you received a text from Chris.
Chris: Hey, where’d you go?
Emilia: Back to the hotel room
Chris: Why don’t you come back down and join us for lunch
You pondered his idea for a minute, but soon decided against it.  With a soft sigh, you replied back.
Emilia: That’s ok.  You have some fun with the boys.
Chris: Beautiful, please come down here.
Your vision became blurry as tears started to form at your eyes.  You wanted to make him happy, to come down there and be with him and his friends; put on a happy and brave face.  But you couldn’t.  You were exhausted; you were so tired from faking the smile, you just didn’t have it in you.
Emilia: Chris, it’s alright.  I promise.  You enjoy your time.  I love you
Chris: I love you too beautiful
Sitting down on the bed, your mind wandered to the words of that audience member; the comments of what people said when they saw pictures of you and Chris out and about.  Scanning the room, you saw your suitcase sitting on the floor.  It was time you stopped fucking things up.  It was time you put a stop to your antics.
Getting to your feet, you started to pile your clothes into your bag with haste.  Once completed, you took out a piece of paper and wrote a note to Chris.
Chris,
I’m really sorry for coming unannounced.  I didn’t mean to put any added stress onto your weekend. Please forgive me.  I didn’t want to do this over a text and make you more stressed and worried.  I’m heading back home, so you can have your boys’ weekend here.  I love you.
Emilia
Gripping your suitcase in your hand, you wiped the last tear that fell from your eyes as you walked out the door and towards the lobby.
Luckily, Uber’s lined the street because of the Con and you climbed into one and headed straight for the airport.

Detroit dir. Kathryn Bigelow (2017)
Tumblr media
I finally saw Detroit, the day of the Charlottesville Nazi march no less.   I have very mixed feelings on the movie and they're only mixed because director Kathryn Bigelow is a really good filmmaker. People who were most wary of the film because it had a white writer were right to be so, because the script is absolutely the weakest link and writer Mark Boal, who also wrote the scripts for Bigelow's films The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, has penned a script that gets so much wrong, trampling all over moments of subtlety with clumsy dialogue and making minimal effort to deliver context.  The film has a very clear three-part structure: the first is dedicated to the overarching outrage and frustration that led to the 1967 riots, the second shows the murders of three black men by the police at the Algiers motel that took place mid-riots, and the third focuses on the lack of justice provided by a biased and ineffectual legal system. But at every turn the writing, and sometimes the direction, undercuts its own message. Aside from some completely lazy title text accompanied by some very ugly animation, the first section does an absolutely terrible job of showing why black people in Detroit started rioting and even mostly privileges the perspective of the police. The final section is so bad you have a character screaming out "the system is rigged" in a courtroom as if the movie doesn't trust the audience to put the pieces together. And that's a real pity because these two weak sections bracket the strongest most effective part of the movie where Bigelow delves in to what exactly went down at the Algiers and where Boal for the most part (but unfortunately not completely) curbed his need of having characters broadcast the film’s intentions. This is the part of the movie that's earned the most criticism for the amount of violence, but it's a violence that feels earned in a way that the violence of the first section of the movie doesn't. This is Bigelow at her masterful best, juggling a large ensemble of characters so that their actions and motivations are clear. Despite the chaotic nature of the action, which involves about a dozen characters running in and out of various rooms, the geography of the place is never in doubt so that audiences are able to fully focus on the horror of the actions. It is by no means a perfect piece of cinema but it's by far the best part of a fractured film because it shows (without telling!) that there is absolutely no winning what the police call the "game", where they use brutality to get their suspects to confess, or indeed any way of winning when it comes to black men dealing with the police at large. One of the gifts of the large ensemble is watching as all the black men take different approaches to trying to survive the night and the absolute desolation of watching as every single one loses. Even the ones who live come away completely destroyed by what they've seen and what they needed to do to survive. Will Poulter, playing a racist cop, has been met with the most praise and though he's very good among my favourites were John Boyega as a security guard who decides the best approach is to act deferential. It's not a great role, again the writing lets him down, but he has such a commanding presence that he's a pleasure to watch on screen. Algee Smith as an ambitious young singer and Jacob Latimore as his friend and roadie are also standouts. I've heard no one praise Anthony Mackie but he has one of the best moments in the film. Sitting in his room with two young white girls they hear the police invading the motel he starts coaching them on what to do and how to act and without further explanation you can tell from the exhaustion and fear in his voice that he's been in this situation before. It's a quiet well articulated moment of the kind the film could have used more of. Also to briefly bring up the two white girls who are also brutalized by the police: Hannah Murray has the biggest part between the two of them and she is unfortunately awful. I'm honestly so disappointed because though the role was small it covered a lot of complexities I've never seen depicted before on screen: the way white women use black men and black culture as a way of being transgressive, the way white women are used as an excuse for white men to lash out against black men, the way that even if they are privileged in some ways they can be victims of sexual harassment and abuse, and the way in which despite these things they can retreat back into the privilege of their whiteness. A lot of complexities going on that are ruined by Murray's atrocious performance. I wish Bigelow had chosen someone else. Some more scattered thoughts: I love it when directors reuse actors so I enjoyed seeing Anthony Mackie and also Jennifer Ehle, so great in Zero Dark Thirty, in a cameo! The production values on this were amazing and the costume design by Francine Jamison-Tanchuck, especially for the women, was gorgeous. I can never unthink of John Krasinski as Jim from The Office, and he was distracting as a smarmy police union lawyer. Samira Wiley also pops up for literally less than a minute, the role didn't require her having a lot to do but it seems like such a crime to have her do the work of a glorified extra. I wish I could recommend it because I am a huge fan of Bigelow but I just can't. The riots deserved a better movie and I believed Bigelow could do better so I'm disappointed that the resulting film was so uneven. Even though the time never dragged for me this only ever felt like a very solid first draft with hints of how much better it could have been. I'm not surprised it's flopping at the box office because a) it's not very good and b) who exactly is the audience for this? White racists won't touch a movie that address systematic racism by police and white people sympathetic to the film's message will have a difficult time sitting through a two and half hour uneven film filled with gruelling violence. By the time I walked out of Detroit to check the news a woman was dead and many more injured after a Neo-Nazi plowed his car into a crowd of peaceful protestors. It served as a painful real-world reminder that black audiences and other people of colour are already living everything Detroit has to say.

~~~~~~~~~~
He drove around LA all night, trying to clear his head. He had no idea what to do or say to you. What he said back at your apartment was a dick move. He wanted you. Of course he still wanted you. But at this point, all these months later, he felt you were at a point of no return. There was no coming back from all of this. There was too much damage, too much bad karma, too many bad vibes between you and him.
It hurt to know that you didn’t trust him. But could he blame you? No. You’d been fucked over by partners just as he had been. It wasn’t your fault that yet again, it looked like someone screwed you over, used your heart as a toy. You were simply reacting the best way you knew how - with anger. Maybe if you acted like a bitch, or acted fierce, people would back off and leave you alone.
The only problem was, he didn’t want to leave you alone. But he wasn’t going to keep reopening this wound for you. That was cruel and unfair to both of you. As much as it killed him, he needed to let you go.
He made the preparations and dropped the envelope at your door.
-----------------
You went to go let Rocky out, when you saw the envelope. It had your name on it with no postage so you knew it wasn’t sent. Frowning, you picked it up and carried the envelope and Rocky back inside.
“Hang on, bud,” you said sweetly as you sat on the couch and opened it.
“Y/N,
I know me writing this is sort of old fashioned, but seeing as when we are face to face, fury flies, and over text or over the phone is unacceptable, I’m opting for this. First off, I’m sorry about what Marissa sent you. She really did come to my apartment to grab some things, I was running late for my flight but I let her in really quick, being nice, to grab her stuff and get out. That’s what I get for being nice, right? She took my phone when I wasn’t looking, and did something petty and childish. If you don’t believe me, you can ask Bee or Chris, I called my phone in front of them and confirmed she has it. I have full intentions to retrieve my phone after I drop this letter off and make sure she never comes around me or you or anyone I know ever again. I had no right to say what I said to you about Hayden. I was just angry and upset that you didn’t believe me about Marissa, but I don’t blame you. I wasn’t exactly honest. I have a pretty good idea why you did what you did with him, but regardless, it’s none of my business what you did or didn’t do with him. We weren’t together so you were free to make your own choices.
Y/N, I still care for you. Fuck it. I love you. I’m in love with you. I’ve loved you since the moment I met you. I didn’t want to tell you like this, but I’m afraid this might be the only way. I’m afraid that you’ll be angry with me for a while, and by the time your anger subsides, you’ll be too hurt to want to talk to me. And I’ll understand because I’ll be in the same boat. I’m so in love with you, Y/N, it fucking hurts. Every time I saw you distancing yourself from me, I wanted to scream and beg for you to come back, but I knew that wouldn’t make you stay….I knew you needed to come to me on your own.
Although I love you, I think we can both agree trying to be together has been a tough start. I think we’ve both endured a lot. More than enough heartache to last a lifetime trying to be together. I’m not saying I don’t want to be with you. Far from it. I’m just saying, if you want to just break all of this off and go back to being friends and professionalism, I would understand and respect that.
You once told me you were afraid you’d never be good enough, and I know after all the guys who have left you and broken your heart, that it probably only fuels your fear. I’m going to tell you, you’re more than good enough. In fact, I don’t deserve you. You deserve someone so much better than me and all the assholes you’ve been with. You deserve happiness, and I think by letting you go, I’m giving you that. Selfishly, yes, I would love to be with you, but Y/N...that isn’t fair to you.
Inside with this letter should be a list of contact information and names. I reached out to several people I knew and some new people to gather some info on your sanctuary. Each one of them has a different role that can help you. Basically, I’m giving you the tools to start it whenever you want, they’re aware of what you’re wanting, willing to donate towards it and make it nonprofit and basically it’s ready to go. Everyone I spoke to is on board and supportive of this.
I was going to give you this as a gift, as a sign that no matter what you do, no matter where life takes you, I will always be by your side, happy and supportive. A way to say I was in it for the long haul, no matter what your path was, no matter how many hours your poured your beautiful heart into a project, I will never hold it against you. As I stated though, I feel it’s time I let you go, so you can move on with whoever your heart desires. I wanted to give you this anyway, because you deserve to follow your dreams. Don’t wait too long on them, okay?
I love you.
Pentru totdeauna al tau
Sebastian”
A tear hit the paper as you sniffed. You don’t know when you started to cry, but here were all these salty tears hitting the paper that Sebastian had hand written on. You looked at the other papers and sure enough, there were names, contact info, and what they could do to help you get your sanctuary started.
“You should go to him,” Hayden quietly said.
Your eyes flashed to him, standing across the apartment. You had no idea how long he’d been there.
“Hayden...He...He gave me everything to start the sanctuary and…” you sobbed.
He closed the gap between you, kneeling in front of you, taking the letters away from you, the tears flowing down your face. He wiped the tears away with his thumbs.
“Go to him. I don’t care what the letter said. I don’t care what you think he means. Go find that Romanian bastard, tell him you love him, and for god’s sake, kiss the fucker,” he instructed with a smile.
“But...I--”
“No buts. Go. I’m going to take Rocky for his walk, and when you return, you better be with him.”
You nodded as you stood up, went to get properly dressed, brushed through your bedhead hair, and left, kissing Hayden’s cheek and thanking him.
You drove all the way to his apartment but he wasn't there. You could’ve called him but you were worried he didn’t have his phone and you didn’t want to talk to the evil skank. You called Bee.
“Hey, do you know where Sebastian is?” you asked once she answered.
“Yeah, he’s here at our house. Why?”
“I need to see him. Keep him there.”
“Got it.”
“Thanks.”
You hung up and sped your way through the city to their home. Finally, after a heart racing ride over, you arrived at their house. You launched out of the car, ran up to the door, and knocked. Bee immediately let you in and you saw Sebastian on the sofa, his arms on his knees as Chris sat in the adjacent chair, watching his best friend.
“Y/N?” he asked as he turned to see you and stood up. You wasted no time crossing the wide open floor plan to reach him. As soon as you were within one inch of him, you reached up and pulled his head down to yours as you locked your mouth with his, fiercely. He picked you up and kissed you back. The sensation burning through you as if you were born to do this.
All too soon, he sat you down on your feet, releasing the kiss.
“Does this mean you’re not mad at me anymore?” he asked, the question trailing in the air between you two.
“Sebastian,” you started, laughing through happy tears. “I’m not mad at you any more.”
“And...you want to be together?”
“I would rather spend one perfect day with you and have you break my heart than spend a miserable lifetime without you. I love you, too.”
It was then that he grinned the widest, happiest grin you’d ever seen on him as he picked you up and twirled you before kissing you again. Somewhere, in the background you heard Bee cheering for you both, happy to see that you finally got the man you were destined to be with.
You’d been told from a young age, first impressions are everything. They can make or break a job interview, build up how future friends or lovers see you, determine who can be a fan or not. So yes, a great deal of how you interact and communicate in this world comes from first impressions. Did you know that the moment you laid eyes on the most breathtakingly kind, handsome, caring, sweet, and funny man you’d ever met that you would fall in love with him? Possibly. Did he know it? Possibly.
But one thing first impressions don’t tell you -- and that’s the ending. You never know where you’ll end up based on that first look, that first intake of air when your eyes meet, that first heart stopping moment. First impressions can tell you a lot, but they couldn’t tell you just how inexplicably happy you would end up.
Spider-Man Fans Protest Sony/Marvel Split on ESPN | Screen Rant
Tumblr media
Fans are still bummed about Spider-Man's removal from the MCU, and it drove one to protest on ESPN this weekend. Spider-Man is one of Marvel's most iconic characters, and many actors have taken on the role over the years. These include Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. Maguire led the Sam Raimi trilogy in the early 2000s, with Kirsten Dunst taking on the role of Mary Jane. Garfield's take on the character during The Amazing Spider-Man series was less successful than Maguire's, and only two films were made. Holland then took on the role for 2016's Captain America: Civil War, spawning two stand-alone films.
A key part of Holland's Spider-Man is that, for the first time ever, he was a part of the MCU. Though Sony owns Spider-Man, the studio struck a deal with Marvel a few years ago to share the character. It stated that Sony would make Spider-Man's solo films and Marvel would be in charge of his appearances in the MCU. However, news broke earlier this month that the studios were having a hard time reaching an agreement to continue the deal. Though Tom Holland will still be Spider-Man, unless a new deal is reached, he'll no longer appear with the Avengers and other MCU characters on-screen.
Related: Tom Holland Is the Best Spider-Man (Yes, Better Than Tobey Maguire & Andrew Garfield)
To say this news has garnered a strong reaction in fans would be an understatement. According to ComicBook, one took it up a notch this weekend by holding a Spider-Man sign during College Gameday on ESPN. The sign read "SPIDER-MAN DESERVES BETTER" and seemed to target Marvel, as its parent company, Disney, also owns ESPN. Previously, fans rallied to make #SaveSpiderMan trend worldwide, though it was revealed later that bots played a role.
Tumblr media
In addition to fans, Spider-Man's potential ousting from the MCU has provoked a strong reaction from Marvel actors. First, Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner took to Instagram to ask Sony to give Spider-Man back, suggesting he sided with Marvel in the debate. Soon after, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, who play Falcon and Winter Solider respectively, lent their support to Holland specifically. Finally, Thor: Ragnarok star Jeff Goldblum blew up on Twitter for his hilarious reaction to finding out the news live on the red carpet.
This fan's protest sign is interesting in that it seems to target Disney/Marvel. Many fans initially blamed Sony for the decision, but the tides may be turning. This protest could show that fans are now focusing their attention on Marvel by recognizing that the larger studio may have to give something up to make the deal. Fan protests may ultimately not affect whether Spider-Man remains in the MCU, but it at least shows that they're passionate about the character.
The Definitive List of the Top 5 Movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
(In my very subjective opinion.)
Alright, this is just a straightforward, semi-obligatory ranking of the best MCU movies because I’m lazy today. So let’s jump right in with:
5. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
I’m going to be honest, this one almost didn’t make it. Other movies do far more for the MCU in an equally entertaining way, but this movie deserves a lot of credit for taking a hard left away from anything Marvel had put out before, and being good on top of that. It essentially invents a new genre of comedy superhero movies, the soundtrack is perfect, and the performances are funny and cover a wide range of comedic styles. Plus, the story is great and the movie introduces infinity stones, which obviously become hugely important, so it’s an overall win. Solid fifth place, hell yeah Guardians.
4. Marvel’s The Avengers (2012)
This seems shockingly low, but it’s still the fourth best movie out of twenty and counting. It’s a gimme, too. If your top 5 list doesn’t include this movie you’re wrong, and frankly a little disrespectful. Don’t forget where you came from, son. The first Avengers movie redefined superhero movies, creating a crossover team movie in a way that had never been done before. Not to mention that the Avengers theme music is still chill-inducing today. It’s only fourth because some plot points are questionable, and because Whedon played favorites like crazy, so some characters aren’t done justice. Still, a game changer that should be respected as such.
3. Iron Man (2008)
This movie deserves all the credit for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that is not an exaggeration. It was the first movie made by Marvel Studios, which was at the time a brand new independent studio owned by a company that had already sold the rights to all of its biggest characters. They dusted off a B-list at best superhero, hired an actor no one else would cast, threw all of their money and hopes into the project and made a damn good origin story. If Iron Man had been bad, or hadn’t made enough money, Marvel Studios would be done and there would be no MCU. So points for due credit, amazing casting, and good, concise storytelling. All with a good moral and wrapped in an entertaining package! Good, good, good movie. Thanks, Iron Man.
2. Black Panther (2018)
One of the newest movies in the lineup and also one of the best, Black Panther redefines the genre again. It’s well thought out, beautifully shot, deeply emotional, and addresses topics that other superhero films wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. It’s also crazy fun, and has the best world-building I’ve seen in a superhero film yet. Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger is genuinely astonishing, and brings with him real-world concepts of racism and colonialism that other films in the genre tend to avoid. He’s also a flawless foil to Chadwick Boseman’s amazing portrayal of the title hero, making their interactions far superior to almost any other antagonist conflict in the MCU. It’s also a geopolitical film, because this movie can do anything and we should all be grateful. Supporting roles here are also amazing, but I can’t rave about Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, and Lupita Nyong’o without this getting extra too long, and besides, you already know. They’re great. This movie is great. The only reason it’s not number one for me is that I feel like the pace suffers under the weight of all that this movie tries to accomplish. Occasionally, the narrative drags as we explore certain characters or relationships that the movie doesn’t really have time for, or really interesting scenes and portrayals of culture are broken up by other bits that may or may not be necessary. Still, if this is what the future of the MCU looks like then we should all be very, very excited.
1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is, in my opinion, a near perfect film. It’s such a thoughtful exploration of every character in it, the MCU as a whole, and the entire superhero genre. The villain is the sort of “hero of his own story” that is fascinating to watch and rarely done well by Marvel. Not only is he a great antagonist, but his entire agenda resonates strongly with the current concerns about deceit in politics and dangerous abuses of power. While it is concerning that this film’s conflict is only getting more relevant, it does speak to the staying power of the broader themes at play. Comics fans should also be excited by the creative ways the movie manages to include more realistic versions of classic Cap villains like M.O.D.O.K. and Batroc the Leaper. The performances are phenomenal overall, but Anthony Mackie deserves extra credit for holding his own and then some as a thus far unmentioned character amongst heroes who have starred in one or two movies prior to this. And speaking of those previously seen characters! This is the first, and arguably only, Marvel movie that properly depicts Natasha Romanoff. The fights scenes are brutal and informative, the score is delightfully tense, and the color palette expertly directs the tone through the whole movie. Also, some shots are just plain cool - do not tell me that the first appearance of the Winter Soldier wasn’t awesome, because I will not have it. This one is an easy win for me. (Though if Black Panther is your #1, you’re not wrong either.)
