it’s devastating to me that the bird flu’s main news coverage has resulted from 1. death of charismatic mammals like seals and sea lions 2. impacts on commercial farmers losing mass quantities of poultry. we have lost millions of wild birds in the blink of an eye and nobody seems to care unless it can be correlated to human profit or interest

For the love of everything, if you have an appointment scheduled for your senior dog for things like poor appetite, vomiting, lethargy or weakness do NOT cancel your appointment even if your dog seems to be be feeling better.
Last week we had one cancel, and 4 days later the dog was dead. Today we have a dog in where the owner canceled the appointment last week and today brought the dog in unable to walk. Dog has an enormous splenic tumor.
It's a bit different when they're younger, but don't fuck around once they're getting older.

My daughter's clever, but also very fucking stupid, dog managed to get six gummies out of a closed childproof container that was on a 4' tall rolling laptop table. So now I'm sitting up all night trip-sitting a 50 pound hound who has -- so far -- startled himself seven times with the presence of his own foot. He keeps going to lick his junk, forgetting halfway there what he was about to do, and then being startled at this foot just hanging there over his face.
(The emergency vet said with what he ingested and his weight, he'll be fine, just stoned for like 2 days. Please take this as a reminder to make sure that no matter how secure you think your weed is, dogs are clever, and please doublecheck where your stuff is left. Cap and Rumba were literally left alone in the living room long enough for Evie to walk one of the other dogs, and we still have no idea how the fuck he got them down. Locked boxes, y'all. For real.)
So, like, this boy is just sitting here, confused by his own feet & ripping absolutely apocalyptic farts. Yeah, buddy, that's what you get when you eat 60 mg of THC in one go, I guess.

This will be Buddy's final weekend. He's been in medical decline for several years now, and has recently started having trouble getting around. He's still happy enough in a lap and stealing food. We're choosing to let him go peacefully while he's still got some joy. This picture is how I want to remember him: sleeping in a basket of my socks, on one of TH's toys. Surrounded by family and finding comfort in a way that deeply inconveniences everyone.

Hi friend! Can you talk about a snake rescue you’re really proud of? Eg. healing a little guy from the jaws of death, saving a little guy from a dangerous situation, etc. No pressure, we just love hearing you talk <3
Have I ever told you all about my Ed's backstory? He's a success story I'm super proud of.
So, I got Edward when he was just about a month old. He's a Mexican black kingsnake and usually they weigh at least like ten grams by that age, but he was tiny. His breeder had surrendered him to a rescue because he just wasn't thriving, and they passed him on to me to see what I could do for him.
He was absolutely pitiful. I tried every trick in the book to try to get him to eat and he just was not having it, plus he was starting to get shaky and weak and lethargic. I usually don't like assist-feeding baby snakes, but he was declining fast so I decided to try it.
I'm so glad I did! It turned out getting his mouth open made what was going wrong with him perfectly clear - he had an infected tooth. I'm not sure if he had trouble with his egg tooth when he was hatching or if he just got it out of whack, but it was rough. I took him to the vet right away, and we didn't like how he was looking at all, so we decided to give him some medicine and hope he'd perk up but we weren't super optimistic. It was a bad infection for such a little snake.
It was like flipping a switch. Within a week, he was eating like a champion, and within a month, he'd more than doubled in size.
He's a cute picture of little baby Eddie Spaghetti when he was really starting to feel better:
Tumblr media
Ed's a great snake. It's so lucky I got his mouth open when I did - much longer and he probably wouldn't have been able to fight off the infection. Now, he's growing like a weed and doing amazing with his ambassador training. He's a friendly, curious, smart little snake and he's got amazing things ahead of him.

Hi Tumblr, my aunt's dog, Rani, who in my extremely unbiased opinion is one of the best dogs in the world, is unwell right now.
They don't know yet what the cause is, but she had to visit an animal hospital to treat her symptoms and they're calling in a specialist. So far this has cost almost $7000, which she is worth! But unfortunately my family doesn't have.
If you have a couple spare dollars you can donate to their gofundme, I would appreciate it, if all you can do is reblog I appreciate that too, if you do neither of those things that is also fine tbh, I also sometimes open tumblr to just look at funny pictures and not think about sad animals. It's cool.

Those of you wondering what her angry voice sounds like, she's currently mad as hell we are taking her to get that eye checked out. She's not hurt or anything, just angry at the indignity of not being allowed to do what she wants when she wants to.

With Goose at the vet today and super stressed about it 😩 She’s been unwell the past couple weeks and they’re trying to figure out why.
I’m hoping it’s something simple but she’s about the age now that Bonkers was when he got a very bad infection he couldn’t beat and had to be put to sleep. Even though she’s not looking nearly as bad as him, it’s nerve wracking.
Pls send prayers and good thoughts 💜

That sounds more positive than what I read before about Toos. Hope the little thing is feeling better and has a better appetite. :)
i cannot begin to describe how insane the change in her has been. ok i'm gonna get emotional with you anon, lets bond.
on the last vet visit she had, last friday, so a week ago now, the vet was convinced the pills weren't working because her kidneys went from stage 3 to stage 4 within a half a week or so, and that there was a good chance she's suffering and that we should say enough. the vet then essentially told my dad to book the appointment to have her put to sleep, without consulting my mother or me, because she was that bad. as it was a weekend, he could only book it for monday morning, very early. and so he did. we believed the weekend was the last days we'd have with her.
but over the weekend.. she changed. she went from being unable to stand, walk, eat, do anything, to having.. life and energy again. to eating whole chicken breasts and taking her pills beautifully, she drinks lots, to being able to walk around our large garden and do laps, her toilet is regular and looks healthy. it was like actively watching her fight to get better despite everything. so we cancelled the appointment, and bought more pills, since she didn't have more than the weekends worth.
we've been making sure she eats daily, switching up her meals if she refuses, she's been eating chicken, rice, egg, salmon, mackerel, ham, various other things and dog treats, she's been taking her pills too. sometimes she struggles, and it takes awhile for her to eat or take her pills, but she always does every day without fail. she's started to bark again, to wag again, her head is held high, her ears are perky, she runs! she was running! and she's kissed me!!! it's almost been confusing for my brain like, she's just like toos again, but i know she isn't, and i need to be mindful, but oh my god? she's just a normal dog again.
of course she has moments, especially after waking, where she is very wobbly and weak and it takes her awhile to wake up proper and get strong again. and she also sleeps all the time. but man, she's really doing okay. i mean - today has been not great, this is the worse she's been this week, but man.. considering we thought we had a weekend.. i can't begin to tell you how happy i am having a week with her where she's been herself. i'm still hopeful, maybe today was an off day, but if it isn't.. i can't be disappointed. she's fought so hard, yknow? she's such a brave lil baby. i love her so much

just so everyone is aware - one of the best ways for bird flu to spread is by encouraging birds to congregate. while the bird flu epidemic from 2022 continues strong into 2023, you should almost always stop feeding birds. this illness can spread between types of birds - you encouraging birds to feed in your backyard could cause the death of the person down the road’s backyard chickens. the disease RARELY spreads to other animals and humans, but it is zoonotic and CAN infect both pets and people, so be cautious and discourage spread of the disease. if you find a deceased bird do not handle it without protective wear and do not let pets interact with dead wildlife. im not going to launch into an outdoor cat spiel but if you have a cat that catches birds regularly, consider stopping them from doing so while this is going on for their & your safety.

3 wk old kitten, very lucky to be found. Dehydrated, URI, heavy flea load but surprisingly not anemic.

He has an adorably stupid half-tail and he's a flame point. But all his current orange coloration is from flea dirt. He'll be getting a bath in a little bit

Hmmmn.
Vet at the shelter thinks Ellie may have feline GERD, which would explain her weird esophagus issues when she was younger. She's currently vomiting liquid once in the morning every other day
There is NOT much information that I am finding on this with regards to management. It seems to boil down to a low fiber, low protein diet with frequent small meals and famotidine.
I find this immensely unhelpful.

This scrungly old beast is medically complicated and on what his vet referred to as "his victory lap." He has spent his entire life refusing to eat wet cat food, instead wanting human food, grass, and kibble. This has made the last 4ish years of medical maintenance a challenge, as we have had to switch up various treats that were safe to feed him, could be mixed with his medications, and he would reliably eat.
The latest iteration was pureed chicken, mixed with a weight gain supplement and warm water.
On a whim, I mixed some wet cat food with his chicken goo, and he ate it!
So I did it again the next night, and the next, and he was into it.
Tonight, I left out the pureed chicken and mixed all his meds and supplements into the wet food.
He ate it.
It is finally possible to feed him like a normal freaking cat, and maybe, just maybe, help put on some weight and be more comfortable in his final days/weeks/months/years/decades(???) This cat doesn't act like he knows he's in decline, and as long as he's still having a good time? We're going to let him.

So when mammals eat members of their own species, it can lead to prion diseases and other issues, like kuru or mad cow. Does that apply to reptiles too? Like, if an ophiophagous snake ate a member of its own species, would it be at risk of illness?
Aside from the standard prey risks of typical transmissible diseases and parasites, reptiles don't seem to be at any increased risk from eating others of their own species (or even other reptiles in general). Prion diseases are poorly understood right now, but it seems like they're just a mammal thing.
And that's good, because so many snakes are adapted to eat other reptiles and even other snakes! Cannibalism is not something reptiles are concerned about.
Prion diseases are absolutely fascinating (and terrifying!). Interestingly, even though birds can eat infected tissue without getting sick, they can translocate prion diseases to previously clean areas. That suggests that reptile bodies can pass on the information for the misfolded proteins, but they won't get sick from them. Prion diseases are so poorly understood even in mammals that I can really only assume that there's something so fundamentally different about reptile brains when compared to mammal brains that whatever causes the proteins to misfold just doesn't trigger in reptile brains in the same way.

"my chicken can't walk and is flopping over/weak, but she's eating and drinking fine" ma'am I can guarantee you that she is Not, i am begging you to learn what a body condition score is and to feel your bird's keel once in a while
*rubs face with both hands* this is the same problem I ran into a few weeks ago doing an NPIP test, I got to their peafowl and they were all BAR but they were emaciated. I told them, you gotta do something, you've gotta get them on a better feed first of all, but something is Wrong. I showed them how to feel, told them what they're feeling for. They had ONE bird that was still almost normal (the bird they got from me a few years ago, and while I'm still very annoyed, I'm very pleased my guy was resistant) that I was able to use to show them comparison.
but like.... please. I'm begging. put your hands on your birds. feel them up. actually touching bird breasts is an essential part of health checking fowl... they have Many Feathers and that contour isn't going to change much unless they're dying. They're prey animals that will do their goddamn best to look normal and healthy until they are dying and physically cannot hide it anymore. But you can catch it before then!! you can feel the keel!! give 'em a lil belly rub for their health!
