A Year in Review: The 31 Best Episodes of TV of 2019
There's never been more TV than this year. Thanks to the launch of new streaming services like Apple TV+ and Disney+ (with more to come in 2020!), there is an infinite number of hours of content out there. And while not all those TV shows are worth a watch, mot seasons of shows genuinely contain at least one great-to-amazing episode. The 31 episodes listed below are the ones that stood out the most; that either became part of the cultural conversation or were not well-watched but still resonated in a way that deserved more attention. Whether it was the writing, the acting, a visual moment or a hilarious scene, these selected episodes rose above the cut to show what TV can do in this unprecedented era.
31. “Striking Vipers,” Black Mirror Season 5, Netflix
Tumblr media
30. “Smell Ya Later,” Killing Eve Season 2, BBC America
Tumblr media
29. “Chase Gets the Gays,” The Other Two Season 1, Comedy Central
Tumblr media
28. “Refugees,” Ramy Season 1, Hulu
Tumblr media
27. “Finish It,” The Deuce Season 3, HBO
Tumblr media
26. “Chapter 7: The Reckoning,” The Mandalorian Season 1, Disney+
Tumblr media
25. “Life’s a Beach,” Pose Season 2, FX
Tumblr media
24. “Easter,” Better Things Season 3, FX
Tumblr media
23. “Chapter 8: Overview,” The OA Season 2, Netflix
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
21. “Stories,” Broad City Season 5, Comedy Central
Tumblr media
20. “Blondie,” High Maintenance Season 3, HBO
Tumblr media
19. “The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Pee While Depressed,” Euphoria Season 1, HBO
Tumblr media
18. “The Bad Mother,” Big Little Lies Season 2, HBO
Tumblr media
17. “405 Method Not Allowed,” Mr. Robot Season 4, USA
Tumblr media
16. “1:23:45,” Chernobyl Season 1 HBO
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
14. “Episode 9,” Mindhunter Season 2, Netflix
Tumblr media
13. “401 Unauthorized,” Mr. Robot Season 4, USA
Tumblr media
12. “Take Me as I Am, Whoever I Am,” Modern Love Season 1, Amazon
Tumblr media
11. “Part Four,” When They See Us Season 1, Netflix
Tumblr media
Ava DuVernay's achingly painful "When They See Us" miniseries about the persecution of the Central Park 5 is capped off with its brilliant final episode; a showcase for Jharrel Jerome ("Moonlight") who undergoes a transformation here unlike any other actor on TV this year. Playing Korey Wise, we see Jerome go from happy-go-lucky New Yorker to a victim of the vicious prison system who is beholden to his truth despite its consequences. It is a harrowing 88 minutes of TV that is both devastating and beautiful, carried on the shoulders of Jerome's unparalleled performance.
10. “A God Walks Into a Bar,” Watchmen Season 1, HBO
Tumblr media
The penultimate episode of "Watchmen," the buzziest show of the fall, is the most Damon Lindelof has been during this stellar season of TV. "A God Walks into a Bar" is a revealing episode in the same way as the last season of "The Leftovers," Lindelof's previous project. The episode reveals that for all of its surrealness and commentary about race and gender in our world, the "remix" of the popular comic book series is, at its core, a love story. Lindelof sets the episode as a classic cosmic joke but as it goes on, it exposes itself to be full of heart and emotion; about two people from different parts of the universe (and different parts of the space-time continuum?) connecting. At a bar. Over beer, conversation, and eggs.
09. “Strawberries,” Ramy Season 1, Hulu
Tumblr media
Unlike anything depicted on TV, "Strawberries," the peak of Hulu's comedy "Ramy," created by standup Ramy Youssef, is told in flashback, tracking a young Ramy in the days leading up to and after 9/11. Seeing the event play out from the perspective of a young Muslim child in middle school is heartbreaking and raw; a highlight that is thoughtful, meditative, funny and surprising.
08. "Shook One Pt. II,” Euphoria Season 1, HBO
Tumblr media
It's not until "Shook One Pt. II" that "Euphoria" finally clicks and finds its groove. Playing out at a carnival, the episode raises the dramatic stakes for the show's young cast, where creator Sam Levinson's bold aesthetic choices complement the intense tension on display. Part thriller, part romance and all edge, this episode of "Euphoria" features stellar performances from Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi and more.
07. “Volume 7: The Magician" + "Volume 8: The Hanged Man,” Too Old to Die Young Season 1 Amazon
Tumblr media
It was hard to pick just one episode of Nicolas Winding Refn's twisted noir cop saga "Too Old to Die Young." The controversial auteur made a perfect thing for streaming age; somewhere between a film and a series. NWR said himself that you can watch the episodes out of order, or start from anywhere, which is sort of true. But it's the back-to-back episodes towards the back half of the series, "Volume 7: The Magician" and "Volume 8: The Hanged Man," that stand out the most; a chaotic and insane set of events that turn "TOTDY" on its head.
06. “Posh,” PEN15 Season 1, Hulu
Tumblr media
"PEN15" is hands down the funniest show of 2019 but it's the Hulu series episode "Posh" — a thoughtful and insightful examination of racism in the 00s — that is the show's highlight. In the episode, BFFs Maya (Maya Erskine) and Anna (Anna Konkle) make their own version of the Spice Girls with a group of mean girls at their middle school for a class project. They force Maya, who is Japanese-American, to play Scary Spice — the only woman of color in the insanely popular British girl group, because Maya is the only girl of color among them. It sparks a deep divide between Maya and Anna that is explored in the short episode with maximum effect.
05. “DC,” Succession Season 2, HBO
Tumblr media
Over the last few years, Americans have made Congressional hearings they're own sort of perverse reality show. So, it's no surprise that "Succession" would go there and put members of the Roy family on display and under scrutiny. The main targets here are Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) and Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun), who have to answer a number of questions about Waystar Royco's handling of alleged sexual assaults and crimes involving the company's cruise line. "Succession" had been building up to this moment since early Season 1 and the payoff is both cringe-worthy and hilarious.
04. “The Great War and Modern Memory,” True Detective Season 3 HBO
Tumblr media
Filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier's ("Green Room," "Hold the Dark") crack at a TV show is nothing short of spectacular. With "The Great War and Modern Memory," he establishes an unsettling mood and tone to the third installment of "True Detective," a somber story about two cops investigating the disappearance of two young children over the span of several decades. The episode is poetic and solemn, featuring two mind-blowing performances from its stars Mahershala Ali and a career-best Stephen Dorff. They're both in tune with what kind of show they're in, selling creator Nic Pizzolatto's writing, which coming out of the mouths of other performers would likely sound dreadful.
03. “Episode 1,” Fleabag Season 2, Amazon
Tumblr media
Filming a dinner scene is not as easy as it looks. For the first episode of the second season of the outstanding "Fleabag" both writer/creator/star Phoebe Waller-Bridge and director Harry Bradbeer hit out of the park. It's a whirlwind of an episode where PWB's Fleabag character literally tells the audience Season 2 is a love story, which, of course, involves the so-called Hot Priest (Andrew Scott). "Episode 1" is fast, zippy, and manages to get most of the show's cast in one room, featuring wonderful performances from not only PWB and Scott but also Olivia Coleman, Sian Clifford and Brett Gelman. It's a chaotic half-hour of TV that has a kinetic energy unlike anything else this year, taking an awkward family dinner to its limits.
02. "Series Finale Part 2: Hello, Elliot,” Mr. Robot Season 4, USA
Tumblr media
The series finale of “Mr. Robot” is as emotional as it is shocking. Sam Esmail sticks the landing with his hacking drama, turning a story about a vigilante and his crew trying to right the wrong world into a personal journey of a young man struggling with deep trauma. It’s a beautiful sendoff, that is fully satisfying and a magnificent accomplishment of modern television.
01. “Never Knew a Love Like this Before,” Pose Season 2, FX
Tumblr media
"Pose" proved itself to be an uplifting and hopeful show, uprooting cliched and tragic stories about trans people we've come to see on screen and instead, opts to show us something beautiful. But its "Never Knew a Love Like This Before" that is 2019's best episode of the year — a heart-wrenching and unexpected boom and a reminder that trans people, especially trans women of color, are often in danger. Here, Candy (an out-of-this-world performance from Angelica Ross), who orbited around the main cast in the series, is murdered. She returns to her funeral in spirit, having in-depth conversations with her friends, enemies and frenemies. Pray Tell (Billy Porter) honors her by moving forward with her wish — a lip-synch category for the balls that he previously rejected. It's a beautiful story about the history of queer culture that's personalized in an unexpected way.

what are some unrated things you wish more people would know about?
Oh man so many. And depends on what level are we talking about. Are we talking about things that people don't talk enough about but there's still some presence here on tumblr like In the Flesh and Our Love Story or are we talking about like Most which is a czech tv show that none of you have ever heard of? :D
Okay I'll tell you a few. And I'm sure you know some of them and I'm sure I'm forgetting some.
How about Her Story the amazing web series that got me to know Angelica Ross before Pose was a thing, and Saturday Church which made me fall in love with Indya Moore before everyone else has met them on Pose.
another great web series that like 3 people on here know about the dutch Anne +.
want some Czech old movies that are not Cozy Dens? How about Bílá nemoc / Skeleton on Horseback which is so crazily relevant for current times. There are also the three Czech films that won an oscar - Kolya, Obchod na korze / Shop on the Main Street and Ostře sledované vlaky / Closely watched trains. If you want something more artistic and you liked Markéta Lazarová how about giving a try to the director's other works. I mean just czech cinema in general is quite interesting but I also feel like most of it is kinda inaccessible to foreigners because a) the language and the lack of subtitles and b)our humour and the way we approach language tends to be quite particular and I feel like most of it would get over people's heads and they would not find it funny. But if you do want more recommendation of czech cinema all you have to do is ask :)
Lilting is such a great movie that so few people actually talk about. It's one of my favourite movies even though it's sad. It's so precious and I love it so much.
I Dream in Another Language /Sueño en otro idioma is a film I really loved and found the story so unique and interesting.
I'm glad Chloé Zhao is getting recognition for The Rider but have you seen Songs My Brothers Taught Me? 'Cause I really love both of those films and it took me forever to find subtitles for it.
Me and @amirathaliasgf keep talking and talking about Shirkers because seriously that documentary/story is so creative and so unbelievable and so sad and just goddamn I keep thinking about it.
Have you heard about Close Knit /Karera ga honki de amu toki wa? I don't like to recommend films where trans characters are not played by trans actors but I also understand that it's not always possible and I hope this film has helped to pave the way forward so next time we can have a trans person playing a trans person in Japan. And I genuinely like the story of the little girl whose mother is always absent and who finds comfort and love with her father new girlfriend.
Black Girl / La noire de... - okay so this director and this film is quite famous for the people who are interested in African/Senegalese cinema but outside of it you've probably never heard of it. I admit I'm only beginning to step into African cinema and this is sort of a starting point.
The Rocket - I actually did discover this through someone on tumblr and I highly recommend it.
The Second Mother /Que Horas Ela Volta? - aka the other film you might have seen in gifsets with Alfonso's Roma.
Ida - before there was Cold war there was Ida. I remember really liking the cinematography because it was really giving me those 60's cinematography feelings. Something that obviously Pawlikowski perfected in Cold war.
Departures - I mean it won an oscar but has been forgotten.
Omg I almost forgot one of my favourite korean comedies - welcome to dongmakgol /Welkkeom tu Dongmakgol it's so silly but I honestly loved it. Plus music is by Joe Hisaishi of the Ghibli fame.
I tried to pick things that I feel are less known but I also have no idea how deep ones knowledge goes. Should I recommend Persepolis or is that known enough. Good bye Lenin? It's known in my country but how well is it known here? It has Daniel Brühl in it so it should be known. How about Billy wilder's movies that are not Some Like It Hot or Sabrina? I just don't know how deep or how many of them would you like to hear so I'm gonna stop here.
Also I just realised that you didn't specify if you meant movies and I sort of went with movies but I could do other things if you want. Sorry if this is not what you meant.
P.S. a tip if you're American and/or have access to kanopy then I believe many of the films are there.

For the AHS ask, EVERYTHING
AHH THANK YOU YOU’RE A SAINT
1. What’s your favorite season and why?
Murder House. The feeling of it, the aesthetics, the characters, just everything. It’s just so good.
2. What season is the worst in your opinion and why?
I don’t actually think there’s been a bad season but my least favourite is probably Cult or Roanoke. I absolutely loved the writing and the concept but I wasn’t super attached to any of the characters in Roanoke (apart from Sophie & Audrey, really) but I did love it. Cult was amazing with what it stood for and the whole story and everything, the only reason why I’ve put it here is becasue it’s the one season I’d struggle to want watch again.
3. Have you ever had a dream about AHS character? What was it about?
Not that I remember, but I had a dream about Evan Peters’ character Quicksilver from X-Men. I don’t remember it though because it was like three years ago.
4. If you could play any AHS character, who would it be?
Definitely Violet because I’m good at pretending to be pissed off when I’m actually sad. Also Zoe because I just really want to like become her. Also I’d steal their outfits.
5. What theme should the next season be?
I know it’s cliche but I’d really love a zombie apocalypse theme. Like the same vibe as 28 Days Later but with Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Billie Lourd & Angelica Ross playing the main characters.
6. Pick a character to dress as on Halloween.
ZOE ZOE ZOE ZOE-
7. Your most favorite charater of all & why.
Zoe, Kit & Violet due to the fact that i either relate to them, want to become them, adore them, want to date them, want to steal their clothes or all of the above.
8. What character do you hate the most?
Kai probably. Would beat the shit out of that little inc*l, racist bitch.
9. Your first AHS crush.
Violet for sure.
10. Your current AHS crush.
Zoe & Kit mostly.
11. If you die at the Murder House, what death it would be?
I mean Violet’s death sounded like something I’d do when I was 9 and suicidal but now I feel like Hayden would kill me for fun or something. Or maybe that freaky ass baby thing in the basement.
12. You’re in the Asylum. What for?
Being bisexual lol.
13. Mary Eunice or Misty?
Misty! I don’t talk about her enough, I love her.
14. Oliver Thredson, James March or Dandy Mott?
I think Dandy is the most interesting villain out of the 3. James March do be kinda hot though ngl. Thredson’s just fucking terrifying
15. Describe your feelings about the Countess in one gif.
Tumblr media
16. Your AHS OTP?
zyle, violate, zadison, brodonna & gritma
17. What would you change in “AHS Apocalypse”?
I’d give Zoe more screen time and emphasize how powerful she is, make Kyle actually be there and be happy!!!, not make those boring straight kids have the next anti christ, confirm that time doesn’t affect ghosts so Violet & Tate are still together even after Mallory reversed time, show us more about Gallant and tell us his fucking last name, have Mallory free Madison from hell, tell us Queenie’s last name and give her more screen time, more Marie Laveau
18. Favorite Evan Peters character?
KIT KIT KIT KIT K-
19. Favorite Sarah Paulson character?
Lana Winters 1000%
20. Favorite Jessica Lange character?
Jude! I loved her character arc and her relationship with Kit, Julia, Thomas.
21. What was the most brutal death of all in your opinion?
Pretty much all The Butcher’s kills in Roanoke
22. What was the saddest scene of all?
The scene when Zoe and Queenie die in s8, Kyle’s reaction to Zoe’s death in s3, Violet finding out she’s dead, and any scene where Kit’s being hurt gets me as well
23. The most annoying character of all.
Ivy Mayfair-Richards & John Lowe
24. Lana Winters or Ally Mayfair-Richards?
Lana, definitely.
25. The most dangerous character of all?
Probably Micheal since he’s the literal anti-Christ
26. What’s your favorite witch?
ZOE ZOE ZOE ZOE ZOE ZOE ZO-
27. What character are you gay for?
Literally all of Angela Basset’s characters, Zoe, Violet, Brooke, Donna, The Countess and a lot more lol.
28. Tate Langdon or Michael Langdon?
Tate 10000000000%. Micheal WANTED to hurt people and did for fun. My boy Tate was just a sensitive teenager who got controlled by evil forces.
29. What character’s destiny would you like to change and how?
Kit, Grace & Alma’s. I want them to all have lived happily ever after together with their kids, all three of them in love, no one gets cancer, no one gets abducted again, no one gets murdered, no one gets sent to an asylum.
30. Which one of all characters is most likely to become your friend?
Probably Violet. She’s a cool, broody teenaged girl with good taste in fashion and music.
31. Favorite Naomi Grossman character?
Pepper.
32. Would you rather end up in Asylum or in Murder House?
Murder House for sure. I can get Tate & Violet to date me as well each other. Also at least Murder House is a gorgeous building filled with some nice people. Briarcliffe is just a miserable torture chamber filled with murderers and people with serious mental illnesses that hinder them from functioning properly.
33. Favorite gay character?
Definitely Lana.
34. Who’s worse: Elsa Mars or Constance Langdon (and why)?
I love Constance’s character because she’s so interesting but she’s said some racist and homophobic things were as Elsa was just vibing.
35. The most repusling character of all?
Kai & Thredson. They‘re literally so disgusting.
36. Describe your feelings about Michael Langdon in one gif.
Tumblr media
37. Your favorite opening titles?
1984 & coven
38. Which one of all characters is most likely to become your enemy?
Kai. He’d argue with me on the internet and then I’d block him immediately
39. Would you rather have sex with Twisty or end up in LaLaurie’s basement?
LaLaurie’s basement. I’ll just kill her and free everyone.
40. Jeff or Mutt? Why?
Jeff becasuse Evan Peters

AHS: 1984 (First Impressions)
Spoilers Ahead
Tumblr media
So, remember my post a few weeks back? The one about American Horror Story’s trailer for their latest season? Well, the season just premiered on September 18th, and I wanted share some of my thoughts. For starters, Emma Roberts is a main character, so I’ve already thrown a red flag at my television set. I’m joking, who keeps throwable red flags around their house? Right, anyway—this season Roberts is playing the relatable good girl with a tragic backstory, Brooke Thompson. Brooke’s story starts with her apartment being robbed by the infamous Night Stalker, Richard Ramirez, who also threatened to murder her, how fun. Would you look at that, It’s time for us to once again meet a fictionalized version of the real life serial killer with no knowledge of basic hygiene, but could tell you the Church of Satan’s rules like they were tattooed on the back of his hand. What was I saying again? Oh right, Brooke Thompson. So, not letting a serial killer’s vow to murder her ruin her summer fun, Brooke decides to volunteer at the newly opened Camp Redwood with her aerobic buddies. This is when we’re introduced to our other main characters of the season. There’s Montana Duke (Billie Lourd), Xavier Plympton (Cody Fern), Ray Powell (DeRon Horton), and Chet Clancy (Gus Kenworthy). The characters are as cliché 1980’s as you can get, which adds a slight charm to them. On their way to the Friday the 13th camp— sorry, I mean Camp Redwood, they’re stopped by a gas station attendant that tells them “you’re all gonna die”. With this information in mind, they thanked the attendant and turned back the way they came. I heard they lived long, prosperous lives after that warning. One of them was happily married, another one became a successful doctor—I’m just pulling your chain. Of course they ignored the warning, this is based of a 1980’s horror film after all. We all know common sense didn’t exist in the 80’s, it barely exists now! Helpful warnings tossed aside, our main characters manage to run into another horror movie cliché while on their drive—or run over, if we’re being literal. Yup, they ran over a hitchhiker. Thankfully, the hitchhiker was treated by the Camp nurse Rita, played by Angelica Ross. After the little car accident, we meet the camp’s owner, Margaret Booth, played by Leslie Grossman. She’s a devote Christian and— well, that’s all I really need to tell you about her character. She reopened the camp years after it closed down due to it’s horrific, murderous past—one in which she was apart of— in hopes of creating a godly place for children to spend the summer. As you can probably tell, that doesn’t last very long. The murderous past makes a reappearance in the form of Mr. Jingles, a man that killed nine campers in 1970, escaping the mental institution in which he was kept. Oh no, where’s he gonna go? Surely not the same camp where he killed nine people over ten years ago, right? Wait, no, that’s exactly where he’s going. Well, good luck, campers, see you next week—if you make it.

Webseries w/ Trans Characters Played by Trans Actors
Because of the Scarlet Johansson thing (euch). The webseries listed are only ones where I felt that I could confirm in some way that the actor identified with the gender of the character they played. There is other representation I have seen where I was unable to verify the genders of the actors. Other LIW/LBW representation can be found at panneshirley’s Character list.
Webseries I Have Seen:
Her Story - Lovely, romantic drama style series. Main cast includes two trans women, one bisexual (played by Jen Richards) and one black (played by Angelica Ross)
Couple-ish - Comedic, “fake-dating roommates” series. Main character is a nonbinary person played by Kaitlyn Alexander.
All For One - Includes a trans man character who transitions in between the first and second season, played by Xavier Lopez.
Carmilla - Supernatural comedy set in college. Secondary character is nonbinary, played by Kaitlyn Alexander.

A Smiling Lela Rochon Flosses Wedding Ring In 1st Public Appearance Since Kissing Scandal + Oprah, Ava, MBJ & More Share The Love
Tumblr media
What kiss? Lela Rochon was seen smiling during her first public appearance. And she was flossing her wedding ring. See her flicks, plus shots of Oprah, Ava DuVernay, Michael B. Jordan at the "David Makes Man" premiere inside...
Lela Rochon isn't hiding! And she's flossing her rock.
A little over two weeks ago, the Internet was buzzing over photos of Nicole Murphy and Lela Rochon's director husband of 20-years Antoine Fuqua tonguing each other down in a pool during a film & music festival in Italy. Fuqua was there to speak on a panel and Nicole was just...there
Once the flicks hit these Internet streets, the 51-year-old ex-wife of Eddie Murphy spoke out publicly claiming she and the Training Day director were "family friends" and that they only "exchanged a friendly hello" when they randomly ran into each other in the Italian city. Everyone called her out on her BS (including Lisa Raye), so she then issued an apology to Lela and their family.
“It was not my intention to be in this situation," Nicole said. "I do not condone women kissing or interacting in anyway [sic] inappropriately with a married man. I too was once married and I would never intentionally undermine another woman, despite what has been written.”
Right after the kissing flicks surfaced, the Waiting to Exhale actress quickly deleted her social media and we haven't seen or heard from her...until. now.
While Rochon hasn't spoken out about the kissing scandal, she let her first public appearance at the premiere of OWN’s "David Makes Man" do ALL the talking. And she said A LOT without saying much, if anything at all.
The 55-year-old actress was all smiles as she made her way down the carpet. And yes, she was still wearing her wedding ring:
Tumblr media
We'd like to note, Fuqua still hasn't publicly addressed KISSgate, leaving Murphy to deal with the scrunity on her own.

We're not sure if Rochon and her husband have an agreement or what - we're just happy to see she's smiling and seemingly doing OK. In fact, she's working! She signed on as a recurring character for the series in October 2018 to play Alma, the estranged mother of one of the main characters, Gloria.
Tumblr media
Oprah has teamed up with actor hottie/producer Michael B. Jordan for OWN's new drama, "David Makes Man." Fresh from luxuriating on a mega yacht in Ibiza, the media mogul worked the carpet in all white for the series premiere that was held at NeuHouse in Hollywood.
Tumblr media
While on the carpet, she chopped it up with ET's Nischelle Turner about what it meant to collaborate with the CREED star, who has his own production company.
"I think it is inspirational for me to be surrounded by and also to be able collaborate with, lift up, rise along with, help raise, other people who are of like minds," Lady O gushed. "So that's exactly [what happened]."
MBJ didn't just want to have his name attached to the show - he was all about being hands on to ensure the story was told powerfully.
"When I sat across from him and I could see he was serious about it and it wasn't just him giving his name," Oprah reflected. "He really does care about these kinds of stories and so you know when you combine the two, it's even more powerful."
Tumblr media
As Lady O and MBJ made their way down the carpet, they snapped it up with "David Makes Man" creator Tarell Alvin McCraney and lead star Akili McDowell.
Tumblr media
"David Makes Man" follows David (played by Akili McDowell), a 14-year-old prodigy from the projects who is haunted by the death of his closest friend and relied on by his hardworking mother to find a way out of poverty. He comes to a crossroad when he must choose between the streets that raised him or the higher education that may offer him a way out. Set in South Florida, the lyrical drama, inspired by events in McCraney’s own life, explores the inherent trauma sustained in the fight for survival.
Also in attendance...
Tumblr media
A Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay graced the place with her presence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Black Panther star brought his mother, Donna Jordan, along as his date for the evening.
Tumblr media
Get it, ma!
Tumblr media
Of course, MBJ was dapper as ever.
He opened up about working with Lady O and bringing the project to life on her network:
"It's pretty epic to have her guidance and her eyes and her essence," Jordan shared. "Her presence around us, guiding us through this process, has been something I'll never forget."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Queen Sugar" stars Dawn-Lyen Gardner and Tina Lifford showed up to show some OWN love.
Tumblr media
"POSE" star Angelica Ross struck a pose on the pink carpet.
Tumblr media
And "David Makes Man" star Travis Coles was all smiles.
Tumblr media
"David Makes Man" premieres August 14th at 10/9c on OWN.

Over the weekend, Amazon picked up sci-fi series The Expanse for a fourth season, after it had been cancelled by Syfy earlier in May. On Tuesday, Deadline brought word that Jamie Foxx would play the lead role in creator Todd McFarlane’s film adaptation of his comic book Spawn, about a black ops guy who dies, ends up in Hell, and is then sent back to Earth as a demonic warrior.
On Wednesday, Woody Harrelson confirmed in an interview that he does indeed have a role in the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off Venom, and revealed that he’s also signed up for a sequel. There’s no official word on his role, but rumours abound that Harrelson might be playing serial killer Cletus Kasady aka Carnage. We’ll find out when Venom releases October 5.
Also on Wednesday, Deadline said that Apple had greenlit a comedy based on 19th-century poet Emily Dickinson, with Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen) in the lead role. On Thursday, Variety reported that Westworld’s James Marsden had been cast for Sonic the Hedgehog movie, where he’ll reportedly play a cop named Tom who teams up with Sonic. The film is slated for November 15, 2019.
Lastly, we got a poster and synopsis for How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which presents a romantic interest for the dragon Toothless. How to Train Your Dragon 3 is slated for release on March 1, 2019.
That’s all the entertainment news for this week. Welcome back to The Weekend Chill, your one-stop destination for what to watch, play, or listen to this weekend. Here are the best picks.
TV: The Americans Picking up three years after the conclusion of season five, The Americans finds the Jennings in a very different world. While Philip (Matthew Rhys) has moved away from the KGB spy life to focus on their travel-agency cover business, Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and their daughter Paige (Holly Taylor) are now involved deeper than before. Stan Beeman (Noah Emmerich) has settled down and shuttered the Soviet task force.
The sixth and final season of the show – a shortened run of 10 episodes, which ended earlier this week – uses the time jump to push its fictional world closer to the geopolitical upheaval around the corner (the end of the Cold War), though it’s more interested, as always, in how people get caught up on the other sides of battle lines through no inclination of their own.
Critics are full of praise for the season finale, calling it a heart-breaking and excellent end to a terrific show, and some labelling it one of the top 10 finales of all-time. “Part of the reason The Americans became such a rare treat is because it so rarely bowed to the usual pressures of TV story-building,” Variety’s Caroline Framke wrote. “It allowed itself to be slow and insular in a deliberate way that almost always found a satisfying payoff.”

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock – the latter of whom served as showrunner for the former’s previous comedy 30 Rock – for Netflix, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt follows Kimmy, a woman in her thirties, who was rescued along with three others from a doomsday cult in Indiana, where Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm) had held them for 15 years.
After getting out, Kimmy decides to move to New York City, where she meets gay, struggling actor, Titus Andromedon (Tituss Burgess), and street-wise landlady Lillian Kaushtupper (Carol Kane), and gets a job as a nanny for high-strung and lonely socialite Jacqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski). In the three seasons since, Kimmy adjusts to modern-day customs and slowly rebuilds her life, going to college among other things.
The show’s fourth and final season will air in two parts, with six episodes earlier this week and the other six in January 2019. Reviews have been positive: The Atlantic’s Sophie Gilbert noted how it “jokes, over and over again, about how injustice is ingrained within every level of society”, and Vox’s Alissa Wilkinson said “the darkness that’s always been present is finally breaking through, even though it’s also loaded with the same hysterical one-liners and fast-paced humour”.

Pose Prolific producer-creator Ryan Murphy, who recently signed a $300-million deal with Netflix, is back with a new show on FX: a musical dance drama called Pose, created by Murphy, Brad Falchuk (Glee), and Steven Canals. Set in the mid-1980s New York, it looks “at the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society: the rise of the luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world”.
Pose includes the largest transgender cast ever assembled, according to FX, with over 50 transgender characters in some form. Well-known actors include Kate Mara (Megan Leavey), Evan Peters (American Horror Story), James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek), Angelica Ross (Her Story), and stage performers Billy Porter and Charlayne Woodard. The show starts Sunday in the US, and will be available on Hotstar in India from Monday.
Reviews are mostly favourable. Entertainment Weekly’s Kristen Baldwin said: “For all of its ballroom flash and diva fierceness, Pose is a sweet, touching drama about finding your family, your purpose, yourself.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Dan Fienberg noted “an introductory quality to the opening episodes” and added: “Pose is poignant, funny and completely accessible, whether you’ve been part of this community or your only point of reference is Madonna’s ‘Vogue’ video.”

Movies: Black Panther Set immediately after the events of Captain America: Civil War, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to Wakanda, the technologically advanced African nation that poses as an agrarian nation to its neighbours. Now king after the death of his father, he finds his rule being challenged by factions within Wakanda, who seek to overthrow him.
Black Panther must work with members of the Dora Milaje, Wakanadan special forces, and CIA to prevent his country from being dragged into an all-out war. In addition to Boseman, the film stars Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. As always, Stan Lee has a cameo.
Black Panther Is the King of Marvel Movies
Directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed), the film received stellar reviews upon release from critics, including us. Thanks to an impressive cast, three-dimensional characters (plus a great villain), stellar writing and direction, resonating themes, and a soundtrack like no other Marvel film, Black Panther is likely the best of the MCU lot. And it’s now available for purchase on Blu-ray and digital media.

Other mentions: Over in the world of streaming, Netflix had several worthy additions: Brad Pitt-starrer World War Z, 2018 Oscars nominee for Best Animated Feature Film The Breadwinner, Disney’s 1940 animated classic Pinocchio, and the critically-acclaimed Beach Rats (2017) and Eye in the Sky (2015).
Luke Cage, GLOW, The Avengers, and More on Netflix in June 2018
Amazon Prime Video now has Batman Begins, which was earlier only on Netflix. The first two seasons of The Magicians are now available on Amazon as well.
Video games: Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary Edition For the thirtieth anniversary of its popular fighting franchise, Capcom decided to package the arcade versions of 12 Street Fighter games: the original Street Fighter, all five versions of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior, Champion Edition, Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Super, and Super Turbo; all three versions of Street Fighter Alpha: Alpha, Alpha 2, and Alpha 3; and all three versions of Street Fighter III: New Generation, 2nd Impact, and 3rd Strike.
Of these twelves, four titles – Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Super Turbo, Alpha 3, and 3rd Strike – also have support for online multiplayer, where four players can join lobbies. The game’s Nintendo Switch version has an exclusive eight-player local mode for Super Street Fighter II. Bonus features include a Museum Mode where you can view concept art from the past three decades, a music player to listen to tracks, and biographies for characters.
Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary Edition has received good reviews. It looks good on modern hardware despite the respective age of the 12 titles (between 1987 and 1999), sports responsive controls, sounds great, and has a lot on offer in main content and extras. The only things we didn’t like were a lack of context in some places, and a higher price on the Switch.

How to access: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Steam for PC, or Xbox One Time commitment: 18 hours
Other mentions: Beyond that, you should check out Yoku’s Island Express, which brings together pinball mechanics, platforming and open world exploration. It’s getting good reviews, and it’s available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
This week also brought a new action RPG with rogue-lite elements, called Moonlighter. If that’s more your style, be sure to read our review, where it scored a 7 out of 10. It’s available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
There’s also Ikaruga, Sega’s 2001 shoot ‘em up, which has been ported over to the Nintendo Switch. It’s getting great reviews, so if you’ve Nintendo’s handheld and have been looking for a new game, try Ikaruga.
