HOLY SHIT WHO WANTS TO SEE MARK DRAKEFORD NUKE A TORY FROM SPACE IN THE SENEDD TODAY
I cannot stress enough how calm and measured he normally is
And I mean... I feel like this demonstrates how no Tory MPs can functionally do their jobs now. Not anymore. They can't raise a single issue now without even the most placid and easygoing politicians flying into a rage with them for daring to have the audacity to even make eye contact. They all might as well go home. Absolute scenes.

Senate Report 1619 to Accompany a Bill Granting a Pension to Harriet Tubman Davis
Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: Accompanying PapersFile Unit: Accompanying Papers of the 55th Congress
55th Congress, 3d Session. Senate Report No. 1619. HARRIET TUBMAN DAVIS. FEBRUARY 7, 1899. - Ordered to be printed. Mr. SHOUP, from the Committee on Pensions, submitted the following REPORT. [To accompany H. R. 4982.] The Committee on Pensions, to whom was referred the bill (H. R. 4892) granting a pension to Harriet Tubman Davis, have examined the same and report: The report of the Committee on Invalid Pensions of the House of Representatives is as follows: The effect of this bill is to increase from $8 to $25 per month the pension of the beneficiary, Harriet T. Davis, of Auburn, N. Y. Mrs. Davis is the widow of Nelson Davis, who served under the name of Nelson Charles as a private in Company G, Eighth United States Colored Infantry, from September 25, 1863, to November 10, 1865, and was honorably discharged. She also served long and faithfully as an army nurse. Soldier died October 14, 1888, and the widow filed a claim as such July 24, 1890, under the act of June 27, 1890, and is now pensioned under said act at $8 per month. It is not shown that the soldier's death was due to his military service. It is shown, however, by evidence filed with this committee, that the claimant was sent to the front by Governor Andrew, and acted as a nurse, cook in hospital, and spy during nearly the whole period of the war. The following is a copy of the letter from Secretary Seward: WASHINGTON, D. C., July 25, 1865. MY DEAR SIR: Harriet Tubman, a colored woman, has been nursing our soldiers during nearly all the war. She believes she has claims for faithful service to the command in South Carolina with which you are connected, and she believes you would be disposed to see her claim justly settled. I have known her long as a noble high spirit, as true as seldom dwells in the human form. I commend her, therefore, to your kind attention. Faithfully, your friend, WILLIAM H. SEWARD. Major-General HUNTER. Gen. Rufus Saxton, in a letter referring to Mrs. Tubman, says: "She was employed by General Hunter, and I think both by General Stephens and Sherman, and is as deserving of a pension from the Government for her service as any other of its faithful servants." In a letter to Brigadier-General Gilmore, from Headquarters Colored Brigade, St. Helena Island, South Carolina, July 6, 1863, Col. James Montgomery, commanding brigade, said: "I would respectfully recommend to your attention Mrs. Harriet Tubman, a most remarkable women, invaluable as a scout."2 HARRIET TUBMAN DAVIS. These testimonials sufficiently show the character and value of the service rendered by Mrs, Davis during the war. She now is about 75 years of age, physically broken down, and poor. This woman has a double claim on the Government. She went into the field and hospitals and cared for the sick and wounded. She saved lives. In her old age and poverty a pension of $25 per month is none too much. The bill is reported back with the recommendation that it pass. The papers in this case show that a claim for this woman was once presented to the House of Representatives and referred to the Committee on War Claims. Manifestly that would be the better way to reimburse her for her alleged services to the Government, but her advanced years and necessitous condition lead your committee to give the matter consideration. There is, however, a strong objection to the bill in its present form. The number of nurses on the pension roll at a rate higher than $12 per month is very few indeed, and there are no valid reasons why this claimant should receive a pension of $25 per month as a nurse, thus opening a new avenue for pension increases. She is now drawing pension at the rate of $8 per month as the widow of a soldier, and in view of her personal services to the Government Congress is amply justified in increasing that pension. I’m thinking of a new les miserables fancast
This is, in part, a petty response to the, hopefully, well intentioned, albeit poorly thought out and tone deaf diversity of the bbc miniseries from a few years ago. Ie. The one with Lily Collins as Fantine. I mean seriously. All the non white characters were either antagonistic or killed off or both. I call it “The BBC Merlin Problem”.
At any rate. I’m envisioning this as a sort of modern retelling of the musical. Like DiCaprio R&J or Russell T Davies’s midsummer nights dream. What I’ve got so far is:
Idris Elba. Jean Valjean
Laura Harrier. Fantine
Sofia Wylie. Cosette.
Joshua Bassett. Marius
Gaten Matarazzo. Enjolras.
Sophie Anne Caruso. Eponine
Andrew Barth Feldman. Grantaire
Christian Borle. Thenadier
Kathryn Hahn. Mme Thenadier
Jake Gyllenhaal. Javert
Reasonings. I wanted to put in actors who I know can either sing or at the very least carry a tune. I wanted to have Eponine actually resemble parents a little bit. Compared to the miniseries which put in Erin Kellyman as the daughter of Adeel Akhtar and Olivia Colman. And yes. I know Gaten has already been in Les Miserables. That’s why I put him in there. I couldn’t find any age appropriate actors for Gavroche. So I had to leave him out.
Tell me what you think?

The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African-American and Caribbean-born military pilots who fought in WWII. They formed the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Forces. The name applies to the navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, crew chiefs, nurses, cooks, and other support personnel.
All African American military pilots who trained in the US trained at Moton Field, the Tuskegee Army Air Field, and were educated at Tuskegee University. The group included five Haitians from the Haitian Air Force and one pilot from Trinidad. It included a Hispanic or Latino airman born in the Dominican Republic.
March 22, 1942 - The first five cadets graduate from the Tuskegee Flying School: Captain Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. and Second Lieutenants Mac Ross,

Tradesman: Thomas Jefferson Guice (1893-1988), Blacksmith
Thomas Jefferson Guice, son of Chapel E. and Laura Ann (Harris) Guice, was born on 1 April 1893 in Mount Andrew, Barbour County, Alabama.  He was the fourth son of eleven children. [1]
During the 1900 U. S. Census Tom was seven years old. As of June he had attended school for three months. His parents were farming on a rental property. Tom had several siblings: Davie, age nine, R. B. age five, Lelia, age two, and Aaron, age one. [2]
In 1910, Tom Guice, his parents and five siblings were classified as “Mulatto”. Tom was seventeen years old. All of the Guice children were attending school and the entire family was literate. Tom’s father, Chapel, continued to farm on his own account. Tom and older brother Davie were working as farm laborers on the house farm. [3]
After completing high school Tom Guice left home to attend college in Tuskegee, Macon County, Alabama. The campus was about 50 miles north of his home in Barbour County. Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute offered academic and industrial training to African Americans. There were twenty-five industrial departments at Tuskegee, including the blacksmith department. Students were taught the theory of their particular trade and how to apply the skills in practice. [4]

Tom Guice completed his education at Tuskegee in 1915 with a major in Blacksmithing. While at Tuskegee Tom shod the horse ridden by Booker T. Washington, president of Tuskegee. [5]
Thomas “Tom” Guice married Minnie Elizabeth Waters on 2 September 1915 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama.
Known children from this marriage are: Tommie Gwendolyn (1916-1993), Reginald Delmere (1917-2007), LaVerne Thelena (1919-2019), Neva Geraldine (1920-2005), Jarvis Edsell (1922-1978) and Gaynell Clarita (1928-2020).
In 1917 Tom was co-owner/operator of Guice & Jones Blacksmiths. The shop was located at 200 South 24th Street, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. [6]

Thomas Jefferson Guice registered for the World War I Draft on 5 June 1917. He had a wife and a child. Thomas was employed by “Crause-Crawford Mfg. Co.” as a blacksmith. He claimed an exemption on the grounds of “Doing Government work”. [7]

By 1924 Thomas J. Guice was employed as a blacksmith with the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway Company (also known as SLSF or Frisco Lines) in Birmingham. [8]
The 1930 U.S. Census shows Thomas J. Guice living on 14th Court with his wife Minnie and their six children.  Thomas is employed as a blacksmith for a railroad shop. Minnie is a teacher in a county school.  The Guices own their home, valued at $3,000 and a radio. [9]
In 1940 Thomas J. Guice and his family are living in the same house. Thomas, a blacksmith for “steam Frisco RR” worked 48 hours the week prior to the census. In 1939 his income was $1,800. Minnie, a school teacher, had an income of $454 in 1939. Tommie Guice, the oldest daughter, is also a school teacher. Her 1939 income was $454. Son, Jarvis, has completed four years of high school. The youngest child, Gaynell, has completed sixth grade. [10]
Thomas J. and Minnie Guice are empty nesters in 1950. They are fifty-seven and fifty-four years old respectively. Thomas is still working as a blacksmith for a steam railroad. Minnie continues with her career as an elementary school teacher. [11]
Thomas Jefferson Guice retired after thirty-seven years as a Blacksmith with the Frisco Railroad. [12]
In May 1988, Thomas lost Minnie, his wife of seventy-three years. Thomas died on 27 June 1988 in Birmingham. [13]
Thomas Jefferson Guice and Minnie (Waters) Guice are buried in Shadow Lawn Memorial Park, Birmingham, Alabama. [14]

World Masters Cross Country Championships preview part 2
With statistical assistance from Scott Lawrence
This blog episode will cover the 50+ and 55+ age groups. But first I owe a sincere apology to one of Australia's best ever cross country runners, Anna Thompson Munro. I have known Anna for about 25 years, yet I entirely missed her entry in the W45 events at Bathurst. My feeble excuse is that she entered as Anna Munro, whereas for years I have known her as Anna Thompson. Once alerted to my omission, I hastily consulted Wikipedia, which listed five of her appearances for Australia in the World Cross Country Championships. I subsequently learned that Anna has competed in the World Cross Country nine times! She represented Australia seven years in a row from 2002 to 2008, then again in 2010 and 2011, an extraordinary record. Her contest with Anna Kasapis in the W45 race should be a beauty.
Anyway, let's get back to the other age groups. The M50 race sees six countries represented. New Zealander Wim Luijpers has great recent track form, running 4:12 for 1500m in November. He will start as favourite. If someone travels halfway around the world for a 6k race, it's a fair bet that they might be a serious runner, and it looks that way for Frenchman Frederic Gilbert, who ran 4:22/9:15 for 1500m/3k indoors last year. Victorian Ant Rickards last week ran 16:49 for 5000m. He and another Victorian, Andrew McEvoy, who had a strong winter in 2022, are likely to be the nearest challengers to the two overseas visitors. Richard Hope is a former Victorian half marathon champion, but his current form is unknown.
(L to R) Luijpers, Gilbert, Rickards
Tumblr media
There is only one foreign W55 entrant, so the race is likely to be yet another showdown between two Victorians, who have raced each other many times over the years, and a New South Wales speedster. Julie Norney Petrie has been in sparkling parkrun form of late, while Bev Thomas is a proven cross country runner. The two met twice in Victorian cross country events last winter - Bev beat Julie over 12k, while the result was reversed over 10k. This should be another great contest. Charlotte Middleton (NSW) is the dark horse, with outstanding 800m/1500m times in 2022, but she may be better suited to the 2k relay.
(L to R) Norney, Thomas, Middleton
Tumblr media
Well, what an interesting line up we have in the M55 category. A few overseas runners, but the locals will dominate. Shaun Creighton (ACT) needs no introduction. What a career he has had, both as an elite open age athlete and then as a reborn 50+ runner. Lately Shaun has been running big distances and looks to have peaked nicely for this one. I think he is close to the hottest favourite in any of the overage divisions. The podium places will be hotly contested. Paul Arthur (NSW) is a former City to Surf winner and it's good to see him back in action. He will have strong opposition from John Meagher (Vic). I expect to see these three guns take the medals, but Michael Eury (Vic), Ken Wilson (NSW) and Bruce Davie (Vic) may not be far behind.
(L to R) Creighton, Meagher, Eury
Tumblr media
In the W55 race, it's impossible to ignore Krishna Stanton (ACT now Qld). She was already famous as a Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Olympian and Australian champion at various distances. Then, from seemingly nowhere, Krishna set a world W55 marathon record in London last year. She looks impossible to beat here. Liz Miller (NSW) is another former Australian representative, but her form is unknown. If she is fit, the podium beckons. Englishwoman Julie Wilson is the only overseas entrant and she has a recent fast 3000m time, as does Karen Blay (NSW), so look for either or both to challenge for a medal.
(L to R) Stanton, Blay
Tumblr media
So that's it for part 2 of this series. Part 3 will feature the 60+ and 65+ events. Please feel free to comment on these predictions on the usual social media platforms, especially if I have left out any nine-time Australian cross country representatives! Until next time, keep on running ...
